- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfle Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Good morning everyone and welcome to Connecting
- 0:18the Dots. This is the show where we take all
- 0:20that chaotic, fast -moving tech news and, well,
- 0:24try to weave it into a picture that actually
- 0:25makes sense for your daily life. Happy Thursday!
- 0:28It is Thursday, January 29, 2026. And I have
- 0:32to be honest, getting into the studio this morning
- 0:34was an adventure. Have you looked out the window?
- 0:38I tried, but there's nothing to see. It is just
- 0:41pea soup out there. The official word is a dense
- 0:44fog advisory for the Sacramento area. Advisory
- 0:47feels like a bit of an understatement. It really
- 0:49does. It's like driving inside a cloud. I couldn't
- 0:52even see the coffee pot in the break room until
- 0:54I literally walked right into it. So if you are
- 0:57on the roads, Please, lights on, take it slow.
- 1:00Definitely. But hey, at least we're not in the
- 1:02Midwest right now. That is the silver lining.
- 1:04Yeah, another massive Arctic blast is hitting
- 1:06the Northern Plains and the Midwest tonight.
- 1:09That cold front is pushing all the way down to
- 1:11the Gulf Coast by Friday. And for anyone listening
- 1:13in the Southern Appalachians or the Carolinas?
- 1:16You might want to do your grocery run now. Heavy
- 1:19snow is on the way for the weekend. Winter is
- 1:21definitely not done with us. Okay, let's take
- 1:23a quick look at the financial picture. If you're
- 1:25checking your portfolio, you might see a little
- 1:27red, but don't panic just yet. No, it's a cautious
- 1:30morning. The Dow closed yesterday, just down
- 1:34a hair. Lost about nine points to sit at 49 ,015.
- 1:38Okay. And the S &P? The S &P 500 dipped about
- 1:4124 points, so it's hovering just under that 7
- 1:44,000 mark at 6 ,978. And for the crypto watchers
- 1:48out there? Bitcoin is trading a bit lower today,
- 1:50down about 1 .4%, sitting right around $87 ,885.
- 1:56The broader tech sentiment is really a wait and
- 1:58see. And a lot of that is due to some of the
- 2:00supply chain stuff we're about to get into. Exactly.
- 2:02But before we do that, we need to address the
- 2:05energy levels in the room. On a foggy, cold morning
- 2:07like this, you need more than just standard coffee.
- 2:10You really do. That's why we are powered today
- 2:12by strong coffee. This stuff is a lifesaver.
- 2:15It's premium instant coffee, but you have to
- 2:18forget everything you think you know about instant
- 2:20coffee. Oh yeah. It tastes just like a traditional
- 2:23brew, but it's packed with 15 grams of Prochin,
- 2:26MCTs, and adaptogens like ashwagandha. It's the
- 2:29ashwagandha that does it for me. You get that
- 2:32clean, sustained energy. without the jitters,
- 2:35no crash later in the afternoon. It's perfect.
- 2:38If you need a boost to get through this fog,
- 2:40head over to strongcoffeecompany .com. And because
- 2:43we love you, use the promo code SNARFL for 20
- 2:46% off your entire purchase. 20 % off is a fantastic
- 2:50deal. It really is. All right, let's get that
- 2:52coffee pouring and jump into the morning star.
- 2:54That's our SNARFL Tech article report. To connect
- 2:57the dots on today's top three stories. Let's
- 3:00do it. Our first story is a monumental shift
- 3:02in the hardware world. It's kind of a David and
- 3:04Goliath moment. We're more like Goliath than
- 3:06a slightly smaller Goliath. Yeah, it's better.
- 3:09The headline is that the king of memory has officially
- 3:11been dethroned. For the first time ever, SK Hynix
- 3:15has surpassed Samsung Electronics in annual operating
- 3:17profit. This is a massive, massive shift. Just
- 3:20to give you the raw numbers, SK Hynix posted
- 3:22a record operating profit of roughly $33 billion
- 3:26for 2025. And Samsung. Samsung came in at about
- 3:29thirty point five billion dollars. OK, let's
- 3:32unpack that because most people know Samsung.
- 3:34They make your TV, your phone, the screen on
- 3:37your laptop, your fridge, your washing machine.
- 3:39Right. SK Hynix isn't exactly a household name.
- 3:42No, and that's what makes this so significant.
- 3:44Think of it this way. Samsung is like a massive
- 3:47department store. They sell everything. They're
- 3:49like 20 % of South Korea's entire GDP. Well,
- 3:54SK Hynix is like a specialized jeweler next door
- 3:57that only sells one very specific thing. Memory
- 3:59chips. And usually the department store makes
- 4:02way more money just from sheer volume. Exactly.
- 4:06Historically, Samsung crushes everyone. But suddenly
- 4:09everyone in town only wants the one specific
- 4:11high -end thing that only the jeweler sells.
- 4:13And in this case that thing is high bandwidth
- 4:15memory or HBM. That's the golden ticket right
- 4:18now. We hear HBM thrown around so much. Can you
- 4:21break down why this specific type of memory is
- 4:24so much more valuable than... you know, the RAM
- 4:26in my computer. It all comes down to the architecture.
- 4:28Think of standard memory DRAM like a flat parking
- 4:31lot. You park data in spots next to each other.
- 4:33It works fine for a laptop. But HBM, HBM is like
- 4:37a skyscraper. They physically stack the memory
- 4:40dies on top of each other. So it's about density
- 4:42and speed. Both. They connect these stacked layers
- 4:46vertically with these tiny microscopic tunnels.
- 4:50It's like having an express elevator that shoots
- 4:52data straight up and down instead of driving
- 4:54it across a parking lot. And that matters for
- 4:56AI. It's everything for AI. AI models are massive.
- 5:00They need to move terabytes of data instantly
- 5:03to the processor. With the parking lot memory,
- 5:05the AI gets stuck in traffic. And with the skyscraper
- 5:08memory, the AI flies. And SK Hynix realized this
- 5:12first. They bet the farm on it. They absolutely
- 5:14did. Years ago, while Samsung was trying to be
- 5:17everything to everyone, SK Hynix just focused
- 5:20on mastering the size scraper. They solved the
- 5:22heat issues, the packaging, and crucially, they
- 5:24got the Nvidia contract. They secured the lion's
- 5:27share of contracts for Nvidia. That's the whole
- 5:28ball game. And the market share numbers showed,
- 5:30right? Oh yeah. SK Hynix holds about 57 % of
- 5:33the HBM market. Samsung is way back at around
- 5:3622%. and they're already locked in for the next
- 5:39generation. SK Hynix has secured over two -thirds
- 5:42of the supply orders for NVIDIA's next -gen Vera
- 5:44Rubin products. Vera Rubin. It sounds like a
- 5:47nice librarian, but that chip is going to be
- 5:49an absolute monster. It really is. So Samsung
- 5:52is now playing catch -up. They aren't out of
- 5:54the game. They're launching HBM4 chips this year.
- 5:57But the big takeaway is that in 2025, specialization
- 6:01beat diversification. All because of how hungry
- 6:04the world is for AI. Which brings us directly
- 6:07to our second story now perfect transition This
- 6:10is where we connect the dots because that huge
- 6:12success for SK Hynix is creating a massive headache
- 6:15for Well, pretty much everyone listening to this
- 6:18show. That's right. This is the so what of today
- 6:21We are looking at what analysts are calling the
- 6:23great ship shortage of 2026. Oh, come on. I feel
- 6:26like we just got over the last one Please don't
- 6:28tell me we're going back to waiting six months
- 6:30for a new car It feels like deja vu, but the
- 6:32mechanics are different this time. During the
- 6:34pandemic, the factories shut down. This time,
- 6:37the factories are running full blast. But they're
- 6:40making the wrong thing. At least for us. Exactly.
- 6:43It's a resource allocation problem. Think of
- 6:46a silicon wafer factory like a pizza shop. You
- 6:49only have so much dough every morning. You can
- 6:52use that dough to make cheap breadsticks. that
- 6:55standard DRAM for laptops. Or you can use it
- 6:58to make a gourmet truffle oil pizza you can sell
- 7:01for 10 times the price. That's the HBM for AIs.
- 7:04That's the HBM. And if you're the business owner
- 7:06with a line of people waving cash for the gourmet
- 7:09pizza, you're making the pizza every single time.
- 7:12And that's what's happening. Both Samsung and
- 7:15SK Hynix execs have warned that this memory chip
- 7:17shortage could last until 2027. 2027. They're
- 7:21diverting all their manufacturing lines to HBM
- 7:23because the margins are insane. This leaves very
- 7:26little room for the stuff that goes into your
- 7:28laptop, your PC, your smartphone. So because
- 7:30a data center in Virginia needs to run a chatbot,
- 7:33I can't get a new laptop. Is that basically it?
- 7:35That's essentially it. The CEO of Synopsys called
- 7:38it a golden time for memory companies, but a
- 7:41nightmare for consumer electronics. So let's
- 7:43make this real. If you're planning to buy a computer
- 7:46this year, are you in trouble? You're going to
- 7:48face a tough choice. You'll either see higher
- 7:50prices or you might see shrink flation in the
- 7:53specs. What do you mean by that? Well, manufacturers
- 7:56can't get 16 GB memory modules at a good price.
- 7:58So to keep a laptop at that magical $999 price
- 8:02point, they might just downgrade the RAM. Back
- 8:05to 8 GB. 8 GB might become the standard again
- 8:08where 16 GB used to be. Nobody wants to go back
- 8:11to 8 GB of RAM. In 2026, that's barely enough
- 8:14to run a few browser tabs. It's a miserable experience,
- 8:17but it might be the only way for them to maintain
- 8:19their margins. And the market forecasts are gloomy.
- 8:23Global smartphone sales are expected to shrink
- 8:252 % this year. And PCs. The PC market is expected
- 8:29to shrink almost 5 % in 2026. It's hard to sell
- 8:33computers when you can't get the parts to put
- 8:35inside them. It just highlights how interconnected
- 8:36this all is. You pull on one thread AI demand,
- 8:40and the whole sweater unravels for the consumer.
- 8:42Precisely. It's a zero -sum game for production
- 8:44capacity right now. If the wafers go to AI, they
- 8:47don't go to us. So the advice might be, if you
- 8:50have a good laptop now, give it a hug. You might
- 8:52need to keep it for a while. Hug your laptop,
- 8:54it's irreplaceable. That can be the slogan for
- 8:562026. Well, speaking of people buying things,
- 9:00despite these looming shortages, 2025 was actually
- 9:03a banner year for one company in particular.
- 9:05And if you guessed Apple, you win a gold star.
- 9:08Indeed. Our third story connects back to what
- 9:11people actually bought last year. The headline
- 9:13is that the iPhone 16 was the best -selling smartphone
- 9:16in the world for 2025. And it wasn't just the
- 9:20number one spot, was it? Not at all. It was a
- 9:22clean sweep. According to counterpoint research,
- 9:24Apple took gold, silver, and bronze. Number one
- 9:27was the iPhone 16, number two was the 16 Pro
- 9:30Max, and three was the 16 Pro. That is just pure
- 9:33dominance. It gets even crazier. Apple claimed
- 9:36seven out of the top ten spots globally. Samsung
- 9:40took the other three. No one else even made the
- 9:42list. Not Google, not Xiaomi, nobody. Now here's
- 9:45what I find really interesting. The iPhone 17
- 9:47came out late in the year, like it always does.
- 9:50Usually the new model doesn't have enough time
- 9:52to crack the top ten for that calendar year.
- 9:54That's the rule of thumb, yeah. But this year
- 9:56the iPhone 17 broke that rule. The base model
- 9:59iPhone 17 took seventh place. 7th place after
- 10:02just a few months of sales. Yep. Sales for the
- 10:0517 series were 16 % higher than the 16 series
- 10:08launch. Why the huge jump? I think it was mostly
- 10:11a hardware correction. For years, Apple kept
- 10:14the smooth 120Hz screens exclusive to the expensive
- 10:17Pro phones. The base model was stuck at 60 Hertz.
- 10:21It felt sluggish in comparison Yeah, you could
- 10:23see the stutter when you scrolled you really
- 10:25could mm -hmm with the iPhone 17 Apple finally
- 10:27caved They put the 120 Hertz screen and larger
- 10:31base storage 256 gigs on the regular model ah
- 10:35So they finally closed that gap it made the base
- 10:38model a much better value exactly They made it
- 10:40a no -brainer people walked into the store looked
- 10:43at the Pro and the base and realized wait This
- 10:46regular one feels just as fast, has enough storage,
- 10:49and it costs $300 less. That makes total sense.
- 10:52I remember looking at it and thinking, OK, I
- 10:54don't need three cameras, but I do want that
- 10:56smooth scrolling. And clearly, millions of people
- 10:58agreed with you. It's interesting that making
- 11:00the cheaper product better actually drove more
- 11:03volume. So what about Samsung? You said they
- 11:05took three spots. How did they do? They did OK
- 11:07in their niches. The Galaxy A16 5G, their budget
- 11:11phone, was the best -selling Android phone in
- 11:14the world. came in at number five globally. It's
- 11:17a solid phone for the price. It is. And surprisingly,
- 11:20the Galaxy S25 Ultra Their massive, expensive
- 11:24flagship made the list at number nine. Wow, that's
- 11:27impressive for a phone that costs, what, $1 ,300?
- 11:29It is. It shows there's still a very loyal, high
- 11:32-end Android user base out there. And we should
- 11:34probably give a nod to the iPhone 16. Yes, the
- 11:3716, their budget entry at around $599. That also
- 11:41helped them dominate. Apple has just successfully
- 11:44covered every price point from affordable premium
- 11:47to ultra premium. Before we wrap up today, we
- 11:49have one more shout out to make. This is for
- 11:51all our golfers out there, or really anyone who
- 11:53just likes comfortable shoes. Yes, we have to
- 11:55talk about Skoni. That's spelled S -K -O -N -I.
- 11:58Skoni is changing the game. They're a premium
- 12:00golf shoe store that actually combines style
- 12:02with comfort. You know how most golf shoes look
- 12:05like? Orthopedic bowling shoes. Yes. It's a tragic
- 12:08fashion situation on the links. Not with Skoni.
- 12:11These look like great sneakers you could wear
- 12:13anywhere, but they have the grip you need on
- 12:15the course. And honestly, even if you don't golf,
- 12:18they're just fantastic walking shoes. I wear
- 12:20mine all the time. Absolutely. So treat your
- 12:23feet. Use the promo code SNARFL at checkout for
- 12:2515 % off your entire purchase. You can find them
- 12:28at scony .com. Perfect timing for the spring
- 12:30season, assuming this snow ever melts. Fingers
- 12:33crossed. Okay, so let's recap the thread today.
- 12:36We have a new prophet king in Korea. SK Hynix,
- 12:40because they bet everything on AI memory. Right.
- 12:42And that same AI bet is eating up the world's
- 12:46supply of silicon, meaning our gadgets are going
- 12:48to be harder to make. Or at least have worse
- 12:50specs until 2027. Right. But for now, Apple is
- 12:53sitting pretty, having dominated sales last year
- 12:56with the iPhone 16 and that much -improved iPhone
- 12:5817. It's a real collision course. Record demand
- 13:01for high -performance electronics clashing with
- 13:03the supply chain that's increasingly deserving
- 13:05data centers. Yeah, we've spent the last decade
- 13:08assuming technology just gets cheaper and faster
- 13:10every year. Moore's Law. We took it for granted.
- 13:13Exactly. But with AI consuming so much of the
- 13:17foundational materials, we might be entering
- 13:19an era of... hardware scarcity, we might have
- 13:23to get used to holding onto our devices a little
- 13:25longer. That's a great point. The upgrade cycle
- 13:27might slow down, not because we want it to, but
- 13:29because the supply chain just demands it. It
- 13:31might have to be. Well, thank you all for tuning
- 13:33in to Connect the Dots with us this morning.
- 13:35Stay warm, drive safe in that fog, and good luck
- 13:39finding a laptop with decent RAM. You're going
- 13:42to need it. We're here to help at Snarfl, so
- 13:44reach out on our website if you have any more
- 13:45questions. That's a wrap on today's top stories.
