- 1:12Speaker 1: Living your own.
- 1:13Speaker 3: People always talk about their purpose a gift. You know,
- 1:15Speaker 3: if you have a gift, not gifts, because a lot
- 1:17Speaker 3: of people say gifts. You have to be focused. Focus,
- 1:20Speaker 3: focus on one thing, get it right, then move on.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Don't focus on a lot of things and get them
- 1:25Speaker 3: all wrong. Lead with that gift, and don't let your friends, family,
- 1:28Speaker 3: or co worker stop you from planning or living your dreams.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Let's get money making conversations started. First guest, you know
- 1:35Speaker 3: it's going to be Emily Lynn Pauls, and she would
- 1:38Speaker 3: take us into the world of multi level of marketing,
- 1:40Speaker 3: which I know nothing about. It's going to be an interview.
- 1:43Speaker 3: I don't want you guys to miss You can't miss it. Emily,
- 1:46Speaker 3: she's on the line right now.
- 1:47Speaker 1: She's waiting.
- 1:47Speaker 3: She's waiting to talk to Reshans. She's waiting to tell
- 1:50Speaker 3: everybody her life experiences in that world. And it's a
- 1:52Speaker 3: great book. I read the book. It's a very thick book.
- 1:55Speaker 3: So if you're a person who likes to read little
- 1:57Speaker 3: bitty books do not. Her book is great. It'll keep
- 1:59Speaker 3: you focus because it's very funny, it's very uh whoh,
- 2:03Speaker 3: it's a lot and it's great. And then second guest
- 2:06Speaker 3: guess would be me. I'll be on the show today
- 2:08Speaker 3: of Coase. She said with Shane, you're always on the
- 2:10Speaker 3: show because you're hosting the show. Ah, well, yes, yes, yes,
- 2:13Speaker 3: but you'll be able to talk to me today because
- 2:14Speaker 3: I want to talk about how to be a successful
- 2:17Speaker 3: business owner. Wow, I'm gonna tell you the mistakes I
- 2:21Speaker 3: made because in order to be successful in anything, I'm
- 2:25Speaker 3: just gonna tell you you have to have made mistakes.
- 2:27Speaker 3: We are gonna get this show started. She is on
- 2:30Speaker 3: the line. My guess is Emily Lynn Paulsen. She's the
- 2:32Speaker 3: author of Heyhun Sales, Sisterhood Supremacy, and the Other Lines
- 2:36Speaker 3: behind Multi Level of Marketing. Emily signed up for this
- 2:40Speaker 3: Sisterhood free cars, the promise of a successful business of
- 2:43Speaker 3: her own. Instead, she ended up with an addiction, broken friendships,
- 2:47Speaker 3: and the rubble of a topo pyramid scheme. My guest
- 2:51Speaker 3: rose to the top and in her tell all book
- 2:53Speaker 3: you read about an eye opening, funny and dangerous personal
- 2:56Speaker 3: story rising to the top of the pyramid world and
- 2:59Speaker 3: multi level marketing as we all know of it. I
- 3:02Speaker 3: know nothing about this. Please welcome to the money making
- 3:04Speaker 3: Conversation master class I spoke to earlier. She's passionate about
- 3:08Speaker 3: what she has to say. Emily Land Paulson, how are
- 3:10Speaker 3: you doing, Emily?
- 3:12Speaker 5: I'm doing well. Thanks for having me.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Well, Emily, where are you based at?
- 3:17Speaker 5: I am actually in central Oregon, so other coast.
- 3:20Speaker 3: I've been out there. I've been to Portland, Oregon a
- 3:23Speaker 3: couple of times. Really really really woos the.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Area up, a lot of good fishing and hunting, correct,
- 3:29Speaker 1: am I.
- 3:29Speaker 5: Right, that's right, yp So.
- 3:32Speaker 3: You've always lived up in the in that area of
- 3:34Speaker 3: the country. Did you go to college up there? Schooling
- 3:37Speaker 3: up there? What keeps you in Portland, Oregon? Because I'm
- 3:40Speaker 3: assuming it's not Portland, organ is Central Oregon? Because the family,
- 3:44Speaker 3: I'm sure keeping you up there now.
- 3:46Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, I've kind of been all around. I
- 3:48Speaker 5: grew up in Montana, was in California, then I was
- 3:52Speaker 5: on Pennsylvania for a while in Seattle. This is really
- 3:56Speaker 5: just where we kind of met in the middle. We
- 3:58Speaker 5: wanted a little more world can you.
- 4:02Speaker 3: All West coast. See, I think you've kind of doted
- 4:05Speaker 3: over the Pennsylvania. Now what what what made you dot
- 4:07Speaker 3: over the Pennsylvania and drug you right back? You said
- 4:10Speaker 3: my Dana Califonia see at Pennsylvania. Hold hold, hold old.
- 4:15Speaker 3: How did you get to Pennsylvania and what made you
- 4:17Speaker 3: go back?
- 4:19Speaker 5: It was a little detour. So it was my husband's
- 4:21Speaker 5: job took us out there outside of Philadelphia and we
- 4:24Speaker 5: loved it. We loved it, and then it was his
- 4:25Speaker 5: job took us back. So we've been mostly on this
- 4:28Speaker 5: side of the country.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Cool. Well great.
- 4:30Speaker 3: I'm based in Atlanta and my show is UH is
- 4:33Speaker 3: streamed and is also a podcast, is live right now
- 4:37Speaker 3: and I try to bring on guests that tell to
- 4:39Speaker 3: educate me. And the first thing I got to ask
- 4:42Speaker 3: is what is multi level marketing?
- 4:46Speaker 5: Yeah? So multi level marketing, you know their corporations and
- 4:50Speaker 5: they use a business model that involves getting contractors, so
- 4:55Speaker 5: just people, do you sign up to independent contractor sell
- 4:59Speaker 5: product the family and friends, and then they recruit other
- 5:02Speaker 5: people to do the same. So you know, it's different
- 5:06Speaker 5: in direct selling. You know, just selling a product to
- 5:09Speaker 5: one person direct from the company. Is that you have
- 5:12Speaker 5: these levels of pay, and you're rewarded for recruiting other
- 5:16Speaker 5: people to sell the same thing. So it's the multi
- 5:19Speaker 5: level thing that makes it different from just regular sales.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:22Speaker 3: So now I've always heard this all my life from insurance.
- 5:25Speaker 3: People try to get me to sell insurance, but there's
- 5:28Speaker 3: always tied to you, well, you got to get more
- 5:30Speaker 3: people to sell. That way you get more people. Then
- 5:32Speaker 3: also you make money off the people you get. Is
- 5:34Speaker 3: that am I mistaking?
- 5:37Speaker 1: That's it?
- 5:37Speaker 5: Nope, that's that's it. Yep.
- 5:40Speaker 3: So I so the whole purpose with people have always
- 5:42Speaker 3: approached me about multi level marketing. If I always said, hey,
- 5:45Speaker 3: we'll show they're making money over there. Brother, you're missing out.
- 5:48Speaker 3: I said, who over there? What do you got to
- 5:50Speaker 3: We'll see what happens. Is you you you selling insurance,
- 5:52Speaker 3: but really you sell insured, but you want to get
- 5:55Speaker 3: other people beneath you, and then you want those people
- 5:59Speaker 3: beneath you to get other people beneath them, and then
- 6:02Speaker 3: you want people another level underneath you. So now you've
- 6:05Speaker 3: got all these levels beneath you, which enables you to
- 6:09Speaker 3: get paid based on their efforts.
- 6:11Speaker 5: Correct exactly?
- 6:13Speaker 3: Wow, and how did you get involved with that? Does
- 6:19Speaker 3: you sound like, you pretty smart to me. When I
- 6:21Speaker 3: when they told me that I ran, I ran for
- 6:23Speaker 3: the heels. I went, oh, I'm not going to do this.
- 6:26Speaker 3: This is just sounds weird to me. It means that
- 6:28Speaker 3: that means that I'm telling other people that just work,
- 6:31Speaker 3: so I won't work technically.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Correct, right right. Well, so the idea is that you know,
- 6:39Speaker 5: you you're basically going into business with your friends and family.
- 6:43Speaker 5: That's how it sold, right, And I think part of
- 6:46Speaker 5: the reason is, you know, like you, I didn't really
- 6:48Speaker 5: understand what it was at first either, and instead of
- 6:52Speaker 5: maybe doing more research on my end, I thought, Hey,
- 6:54Speaker 5: here's my friend who's telling me about this, and I
- 6:58Speaker 5: trust her. She seems trustworthy. I don't think she'd lead
- 7:01Speaker 5: me astray. And I thought, you know what, what's the harm?
- 7:05Speaker 5: What's the harm in trying this out? So I really
- 7:08Speaker 5: kind of ran with ignorance, I guess in the beginning,
- 7:10Speaker 5: instead of you know, like you did, run the other direction.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Right, But it's but it's the call of potential money
- 7:17Speaker 3: making opportunities.
- 7:18Speaker 1: They pique your interest. That's what piqued my interests, you.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Know, because because because everybody who's making money is very
- 7:27Speaker 3: vocal about it a very they live, they drive nice cars,
- 7:31Speaker 3: they live in a good house.
- 7:32Speaker 1: They're very and almost like religious about it. They preach
- 7:36Speaker 1: on it.
- 7:36Speaker 3: They almost like make you feel like you missing out
- 7:39Speaker 3: an opportunity, like you're not a smart person for participating.
- 7:44Speaker 5: Mm hmm. Well, and you hear the stories of the
- 7:46Speaker 5: very very very small percentage at the top, and you
- 7:49Speaker 5: hear so you hear it so much that you think, oh,
- 7:52Speaker 5: this must be most people's experience, because that's what I'm hearing.
- 7:56Speaker 5: But what you don't hear is that you know, ninety
- 7:58Speaker 5: nine percent of people are not there, They're not at
- 8:00Speaker 5: the pinnacle, right, So you kind of hold on to
- 8:03Speaker 5: this hope. Well, gosh, I could be that person, I
- 8:06Speaker 5: could drive that car, I could make all that money.
- 8:08Speaker 5: It could be me right right.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Well, guess what, hey, hun Sales Sister, who is Supremacy
- 8:14Speaker 3: and the other lines behind multi level Marketing? I'm speaking
- 8:16Speaker 3: to Emilyley and Paulson about this book, And the reason
- 8:20Speaker 3: I brought on the show was that, you know, we
- 8:22Speaker 3: hear a lot of but we always want to get
- 8:24Speaker 3: to that finish line. We always want to be able
- 8:27Speaker 3: to make a lot of money in our life. Well,
- 8:29Speaker 3: you walked away from forty thousand dollars a month.
- 8:32Speaker 1: You quit. That's a lot of money.
- 8:37Speaker 5: It is, it is, And you know that was at
- 8:39Speaker 5: one period of time. I didn't make that every month
- 8:41Speaker 5: of the entire time. You know, that's one thing about
- 8:44Speaker 5: multi level marketing too. It fluctuates a lot, and it's
- 8:49Speaker 5: you know, very it's like a house of cards built
- 8:51Speaker 5: on sand really like. So for me, I got to
- 8:56Speaker 5: this place where I was doing all the things and
- 8:58Speaker 5: it was working for me. So I was in that
- 9:00Speaker 5: very small percentage, and I assumed because it had worked
- 9:04Speaker 5: for me, that other people, if they did the same
- 9:06Speaker 5: thing I did, it would work for them too. And
- 9:09Speaker 5: over time I realized, well, shoot, this is not working
- 9:12Speaker 5: for other people.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Why not?
- 9:14Speaker 5: And it was because mathematically it couldn't. You know, there's
- 9:17Speaker 5: only so many people. Things get saturated. And I really
- 9:22Speaker 5: was making money because so many other people were losing money.
- 9:26Speaker 5: And that was a realization that made me, you know,
- 9:29Speaker 5: make my exit.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Okay, cool, now, all let's started for you. Twenty fourteen,
- 9:34Speaker 3: I believe that's when I've read in the book yep
- 9:35Speaker 3: or twenty fourteen and.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Walk us through the steps. Where were you in your
- 9:39Speaker 1: life before you got into this world. Were you happy?
- 9:42Speaker 1: Were you working?
- 9:44Speaker 6: You?
- 9:44Speaker 3: Did you use marriage? You had kids? What did you
- 9:48Speaker 3: Were you looking for a part time job? Are we
- 9:50Speaker 3: looking for extra income? What pushed you in this direction
- 9:53Speaker 3: that made you just take off the blinders and just
- 9:57Speaker 3: see nothing but the opportunity.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Yeah? Yeah, So I was, you know, a stay at
- 10:03Speaker 5: home mom. I had been out of the workforce for
- 10:06Speaker 5: almost ten years because I, you know, stayed at home
- 10:09Speaker 5: with the kids and my husband, you know, traditional kind
- 10:11Speaker 5: of roles. He worked out of the house, and I
- 10:14Speaker 5: really just I wanted something like I just wanted some
- 10:18Speaker 5: escape from the mundane. I wanted to be able to contribute.
- 10:21Speaker 5: You know. It had been a long time since I'd
- 10:23Speaker 5: had any recognition for anything really, and so when this
- 10:29Speaker 5: came into my life, it was it kind of filled
- 10:32Speaker 5: all those pain points. It was like, Okay, well this
- 10:34Speaker 5: is it could be potential money. You know, there's some
- 10:37Speaker 5: really cool products that I could use. It's something outside
- 10:41Speaker 5: of what I'm doing now. It gives me a little
- 10:43Speaker 5: escape to go do something, meet with friends, you know,
- 10:45Speaker 5: go have wine whatever, go to these like retention events.
- 10:49Speaker 5: And I thought, you know, I just I just had
- 10:51Speaker 5: hope that it could be something, and then it was
- 10:53Speaker 5: packaged up with this community of other women who were
- 10:56Speaker 5: all doing the same thing. So it really just fell
- 10:59Speaker 5: into my lafe this time when I think I was
- 11:01Speaker 5: just lonely, I was looking for other options, and I
- 11:05Speaker 5: just had a lot of hope that it could fill all.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Those needs lonely though. Yeah, what was the product?
- 11:14Speaker 5: So, yeah, it was wellness skincare. You know, there was
- 11:17Speaker 5: a kind of a wide range of products, but it
- 11:19Speaker 5: was mostly you know, skincare products.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I've been approached with the vitamins. I've been through coffee,
- 11:27Speaker 3: I've been approached. The very first time I was approached
- 11:29Speaker 3: was insurance. I remember I was in college. It was
- 11:31Speaker 3: insurance in bar. I'm just letting everybody know. You know,
- 11:34Speaker 3: it's not trapped to a white community or a Hispanic
- 11:37Speaker 3: community or a black community. Its multi level marketing is everywhere.
- 11:41Speaker 3: It's everywhere, and it's whoever was pitching that story. But
- 11:43Speaker 3: it's always the person at the top of the pair,
- 11:46Speaker 3: a bit at the top of it that's singing the
- 11:48Speaker 3: highest praises about making money. Because the more people that
- 11:52Speaker 3: get underneath them, then guess what the money goes up.
- 11:56Speaker 1: That's the whole process.
- 11:58Speaker 3: So their their role is to convince thousand people that
- 12:00Speaker 3: being underneath them and they live in the wealth of
- 12:03Speaker 3: your hard work. And so you're in So you so
- 12:06Speaker 3: you were you excited?
- 12:09Speaker 1: Right?
- 12:09Speaker 3: You somebody told you they do you go to a class?
- 12:12Speaker 3: Did you go to a seminar? Did you do something
- 12:15Speaker 3: on the line? How did you get your training?
- 12:18Speaker 5: You know, there really isn't any training. You're just joining
- 12:21Speaker 5: up a friend and you basically are signing your your
- 12:26Speaker 5: social Security number and your credit card number and and
- 12:29Speaker 5: you're basically doing you know, you're putting your livelihood into
- 12:32Speaker 5: this person's hands. And so they're telling you kind of
- 12:34Speaker 5: well you're smart.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Okay, I go, you're smart now, you know, so you
- 12:42Speaker 3: walk right into this. I heard the word lonely in there,
- 12:45Speaker 3: so I can under you susceptible whenever the emotions are
- 12:49Speaker 3: tied to decisions, okay. And so now this is a stranger, correct.
- 12:55Speaker 5: It was actually a friend. It was a friend from
- 12:57Speaker 5: high school, you know, a distant friend, but someone who
- 13:00Speaker 5: you know was raised in the same town. I was
- 13:02Speaker 5: in someone who I trusted and I had this supposed
- 13:07Speaker 5: proof on social media that she was succeeding. And so
- 13:10Speaker 5: I kind of trusted that if I did what she
- 13:12Speaker 5: said that that would work for me too.
- 13:15Speaker 1: And what was what would work for you.
- 13:17Speaker 3: I'm just asking these questions because you know the story,
- 13:20Speaker 3: and I'm just trying to pull the story out of
- 13:22Speaker 3: you a little bit more detailed because of the fact
- 13:24Speaker 3: that you know in some ways, you know there's there's
- 13:27Speaker 3: a bigger story behind all this because a lot of
- 13:29Speaker 3: people are falling. I want to use the word victim
- 13:32Speaker 3: because we all make decisions. And you know, if I'd
- 13:34Speaker 3: have chose to get into selling insurance, or selling coffee
- 13:38Speaker 3: or selling vitamins, that was my decision. It's when you
- 13:41Speaker 3: get in and how the approach of how you have
- 13:44Speaker 3: to be successful is what the decision that made you
- 13:47Speaker 3: come out of it?
- 13:48Speaker 1: Come out of it. But it took you a while.
- 13:50Speaker 1: How long were you in the in the How long
- 13:52Speaker 1: were you selling?
- 13:54Speaker 5: Almost seven years?
- 13:57Speaker 3: Okay, so he was in there for a minute. Now,
- 14:00Speaker 3: you didn't just dive in and just come on back
- 14:02Speaker 3: out there.
- 14:04Speaker 5: Oh No, I was in deep. I was in really deep.
- 14:07Speaker 1: So for twenty fourteen, twenty twenty one, basically you was
- 14:11Speaker 1: in the world of multi level marketing.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Now let's talk about because everything's based on I don't
- 14:17Speaker 3: want to use any words that sound negative, but everything's
- 14:21Speaker 3: based on a pyramid. You know a lot of people
- 14:24Speaker 3: at the bottom and you go up to the top.
- 14:25Speaker 3: How did you start building your your Could I use
- 14:28Speaker 3: the word followers or your sales team?
- 14:30Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, sure, Yeah, followers are downline. It's usually called downline.
- 14:35Speaker 1: How did you start building that?
- 14:37Speaker 5: Yeah? So honestly, I did the same thing that my
- 14:42Speaker 5: friend who you know had me, who enrolled me, did.
- 14:45Speaker 5: I just started talking to people. I started talking to
- 14:47Speaker 5: my friends. And one thing that I had going for
- 14:50Speaker 5: me is that in the area I was living in
- 14:53Speaker 5: at the time, and I was living in Seattle at
- 14:54Speaker 5: the time, there were not a lot of people who
- 14:57Speaker 5: knew about this company, who knew about these products. So
- 15:00Speaker 5: I had that on my side, as when people heard
- 15:02Speaker 5: of this, they're like, oh, those look cool, I've never
- 15:04Speaker 5: heard of this before. Sure I'll try them. And so
- 15:07Speaker 5: I didn't. I wasn't competing with anybody, and so I
- 15:11Speaker 5: had that going for me. I also had going for
- 15:13Speaker 5: me the fact that you know, first of all, these
- 15:15Speaker 5: are all buy in organizations. You have to pay to play.
- 15:18Speaker 5: So I bought the whatever thousand dollars kits to join. Wow, right,
- 15:24Speaker 5: not cheap? Right these like these things are not inexpensive
- 15:27Speaker 5: to join. But again that's all danced around because you
- 15:31Speaker 5: know you're getting all this products and you get to
- 15:33Speaker 5: try everything. And to me, I was kind of like,
- 15:35Speaker 5: oh sure, I like all this stuff. You know why
- 15:37Speaker 5: the heck nots? And I obviously you know, so I
- 15:41Speaker 5: had that going for me.
- 15:42Speaker 3: I had the privilege thought, I want to go to
- 15:44Speaker 3: this break and when would come back. I want to
- 15:45Speaker 3: finish this conversation because what happens if I let me
- 15:47Speaker 3: let you continue, you won't finish the thought. I'm talking about.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Emily Lynn Paul's in her book Heyhun Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy
- 15:54Speaker 3: and the other lines behind multi level marketing were right
- 15:57Speaker 3: back and get in more detail. She started twenty fourteen,
- 16:00Speaker 3: she stopped in twenty twenty one. Now she has an
- 16:03Speaker 3: incredible book that we're discussing on the show Money Making
- 16:05Speaker 3: Conversation Masterclass, and we'll be right back.
- 16:14Speaker 6: We'll be right back with more Money Making Conversations Masterclass
- 16:18Speaker 6: with Rushaan McDonald.
- 16:21Speaker 7: You are now tuned into the Money Making Conversations Minute
- 16:24Speaker 7: of Inspiration with Rushaan McDonald.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Money Love what you pray of you.
- 16:28Speaker 8: A and M University in Houston, Texas for about four
- 16:31Speaker 8: years and got her engineering degree. Lonnie worked as an
- 16:33Speaker 8: engineer for IBM and other companies for more than ten years.
- 16:37Speaker 8: Did she realized that engineering was not her passion. Stand
- 16:40Speaker 8: up comedy was her gift.
- 16:41Speaker 9: I just think everybody should tell their journey, and especially
- 16:45Speaker 9: people of color. People don't understand how hard it is
- 16:49Speaker 9: for us to make it. That's why I want everybody,
- 16:51Speaker 9: especially during a pandemic, to share their story, you know.
- 16:54Speaker 9: And so this is my story. I grew up in
- 16:56Speaker 9: Detroit and the Brewster Projects and it just takes you
- 16:58Speaker 9: through that whole life thing because you know, some people
- 17:02Speaker 9: only know me from real or from Chelsea Lady, or
- 17:04Speaker 9: you know the shows that Rashan will put me on.
- 17:10Speaker 9: So but you know, it's the whole journey.
- 17:13Speaker 8: If you want to hear this full interview with Lonnie Love,
- 17:16Speaker 8: visit money.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Making Conversation dot com. Keep winning.
- 17:20Speaker 6: Now let's return to Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rashaan McDonald.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Thank you for returning. And I'm speaking of Emily Lynn
- 17:29Speaker 3: Paulson about her journey. You know, she has a background
- 17:32Speaker 3: as a chemist, she's an advocate for the truth. She
- 17:34Speaker 3: talks about in her book The Journey of this Fascinating
- 17:37Speaker 3: World of Multi level Marketing. She sees it as a
- 17:41Speaker 3: cult and the virality of misinformation, and they preyed upon
- 17:44Speaker 3: her and she felt her world of isolation because she
- 17:47Speaker 3: was a stay at home mom and that's and that
- 17:49Speaker 3: isolation they use a lot on a lot of women
- 17:52Speaker 3: who are stay at home mom all feel isolated. And
- 17:55Speaker 3: as you as you were telling your story about getting involved,
- 17:58Speaker 3: that that played a major role in you. You spent
- 18:01Speaker 3: a thousand dollars, so you immediately got to recoup your investment.
- 18:05Speaker 5: Correct, Yeah, yeah, you got to recoup the investments. And
- 18:09Speaker 5: that's why a lot of people don't ever make money,
- 18:12Speaker 5: because you're starting out in the negative to begin with.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Right.
- 18:15Speaker 5: So for me was you know, talking to friends and
- 18:18Speaker 5: family and trying to get them to try the products
- 18:20Speaker 5: I was selling and trying to get them to join
- 18:23Speaker 5: the same way I did.
- 18:25Speaker 1: And what happened, well, you know, just.
- 18:29Speaker 5: As luck should have it in my case, I did
- 18:32Speaker 5: have friends who are interested and like I trusted my
- 18:35Speaker 5: upline who I joined, they trusted me. They said, well,
- 18:38Speaker 5: you join this, so you know you're a smart person,
- 18:41Speaker 5: right like you wouldn't lead us astray. And so they
- 18:44Speaker 5: joined as well, and so pretty quickly I recoup my
- 18:48Speaker 5: investments and then started you know, the love bombing where
- 18:53Speaker 5: I was getting you know, mentioned in team newsletters and
- 18:56Speaker 5: tagged on social media, and I was getting little gifts
- 18:59Speaker 5: in the mail, and I was all of a sudden
- 19:01Speaker 5: getting you know, rewarded and you know, noticed for things
- 19:06Speaker 5: that I hadn't been noticed for in a really long time.
- 19:09Speaker 3: So you're saying that, now, let me ask you this.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Let me ask you to Emily. This book is about
- 19:14Speaker 3: this book you wrote. Okay, you just talk about your
- 19:17Speaker 3: level of isolation, your level of insecurities, and like I said,
- 19:20Speaker 3: pig attention that's been brought to you. A stay at
- 19:23Speaker 3: home mom, a great stay at home mom. You know
- 19:26Speaker 3: you educated obviously because I mentioned you a chemist. So
- 19:31Speaker 3: is this something just happened to you or this can
- 19:34Speaker 3: happen to anyone?
- 19:36Speaker 5: Well, this can happen to anybody, It really can. And
- 19:40Speaker 5: you know there's a reason that a lot of the
- 19:42Speaker 5: stories in multi level marketing start just like mine, like, oh,
- 19:45Speaker 5: I was lonely and then I joined or you know,
- 19:48Speaker 5: I had just lost my job and then I joined
- 19:50Speaker 5: or just gotten divorced. It really does. There's a lot
- 19:54Speaker 5: of pain points and MLMs really do prey on that vulnerability.
- 19:59Speaker 5: So any one in any kind of vulnerable position is susceptible.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Now in twenty fourteen, there's a journey in all this.
- 20:07Speaker 3: You're getting your friends, the people you know, they getting
- 20:10Speaker 3: their friends people, they know, they getting relatives and love
- 20:12Speaker 3: would underneath them. That's what the whole that's how multi
- 20:15Speaker 3: level marketing works. You get other people to be underneath you.
- 20:19Speaker 3: They get other people being underneath them. That's how it works.
- 20:22Speaker 7: Now.
- 20:22Speaker 3: So now what I immediately hear is that you've invited
- 20:26Speaker 3: your friends to this world. They committed one thousand dollars,
- 20:29Speaker 3: so they're looking at you a certain kind of a way. Okay,
- 20:33Speaker 3: but you get you your success is being reaped off
- 20:36Speaker 3: the fact that you brought.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Them on board.
- 20:39Speaker 5: Mm hmm exactly.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Now when did they start looking at you sideways?
- 20:44Speaker 5: So you know, I kind of started looking at the
- 20:47Speaker 5: sideways when I was, you know, coaching them, just like
- 20:50Speaker 5: I was being coached to, you know, reach out to
- 20:52Speaker 5: people to you know, do these cold calls, to do
- 20:55Speaker 5: all this income producing activity and personal development. And yet
- 20:59Speaker 5: they weren't growing the same way I was, and you know,
- 21:03Speaker 5: mathematically they couldn't because obviously we were in the same
- 21:06Speaker 5: network trying to recruit the same people, and it just
- 21:08Speaker 5: doesn't work that way. So you know a lot of
- 21:13Speaker 5: those platitudes like you know, take it till you make it,
- 21:16Speaker 5: and you know, just keep grinding. You know, you'll keep
- 21:21Speaker 5: right like it's you hear a lot of those things,
- 21:23Speaker 5: and a lot of those things are repeated, so you
- 21:25Speaker 5: just think, gosh, if I just keep working harder. It's
- 21:28Speaker 5: this meritocracy where you know you don't want to quit
- 21:31Speaker 5: because you think, if I just did one more thing,
- 21:34Speaker 5: one more cold call, maybe that will be the thing
- 21:36Speaker 5: that you know, pushes me over the edge, it makes
- 21:38Speaker 5: me successful.
- 21:39Speaker 3: And that's why you were saying, okay, because we mentioned
- 21:41Speaker 3: in your bio it said, you know, you made up
- 21:43Speaker 3: to forty thousand dollars a month. You said, we're shoreing.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Hold up, hold up, hold up.
- 21:46Speaker 3: I didn't do that every month, but once you start
- 21:49Speaker 3: making money, you kind of like hooked. So if you
- 21:51Speaker 3: made up to forty thousand dollars a month, the possibilities
- 21:55Speaker 3: starts to drive you. At what point in the in
- 21:57Speaker 3: this lane of opportunities from twenty fourteen to twenty to
- 22:01Speaker 3: twenty one did you feel you peaked as a representative
- 22:05Speaker 3: or as a person in emaill.
- 22:08Speaker 5: I would say twenty seventeen. And you know, something interesting
- 22:12Speaker 5: happened at that point is I got sober, which you
- 22:15Speaker 5: wrote obviously read in the book. And that was a
- 22:18Speaker 5: big part of my awakening, really was I wasn't drinking anymore.
- 22:23Speaker 5: I wasn't, you know, sending cold messages after having a
- 22:26Speaker 5: couple of glasses champagne, and I realized I started seeing
- 22:29Speaker 5: a lot of this stuff. I started seeing that my
- 22:32Speaker 5: team wasn't really succeeding the same way that I was.
- 22:37Speaker 5: And that's when, you know, slowly kind of the wheels
- 22:39Speaker 5: started falling off the bus a little bit.
- 22:42Speaker 3: Now it says you got cancer, correct, yep. Now I'm
- 22:49Speaker 3: a cancer survivor twenty fifteen. Not to make you feel
- 22:52Speaker 3: guilty or anything, What type of cancers.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Did you get?
- 22:56Speaker 5: I had cervical cancer.
- 22:57Speaker 3: Okay, mine was diyrod cancer and it was twenty fifteen.
- 23:00Speaker 3: And then I went through the surgery and I feel,
- 23:02Speaker 3: you know, you know, with cancer, no one cure as
- 23:06Speaker 3: long as you live in life and taking the pills.
- 23:08Speaker 3: Then you live a good life and pray that everything
- 23:12Speaker 3: continues to go your way. But cancer is powerful because
- 23:15Speaker 3: once they tell you have cancer, you can just run
- 23:17Speaker 3: you up the heels and make you wonder what's going
- 23:20Speaker 3: to happen to you next? Now you got cancer, and
- 23:23Speaker 3: use it for pity to grow your MLL business base?
- 23:29Speaker 1: How and why?
- 23:31Speaker 5: Yeah? So again, like I said, the really the low
- 23:36Speaker 5: point is always used, right, So you're already primed to
- 23:39Speaker 5: look for people's vulnerabilities. And so when I found out
- 23:42Speaker 5: I had cancer, it's my upline and other people in
- 23:46Speaker 5: the company suggested like, hey, how can we make something
- 23:50Speaker 5: good out of this? And of course I'm thinking like,
- 23:53Speaker 5: well that would be great. You know, I'd love a distraction.
- 23:55Speaker 5: What you know, what can I do? And so it
- 23:57Speaker 5: suggested like, hey, well why don't you have a little
- 23:59Speaker 5: like event and then you can give your your portions
- 24:03Speaker 5: of your profit to charity. And like, on its face,
- 24:07Speaker 5: that sounds all lovely and good, but it's requiring people
- 24:13Speaker 5: to buy something from a company that then benefits you know,
- 24:17Speaker 5: all of the people in the uplook.
- 24:19Speaker 1: You have a fundraiser basically, right, a fundraiser for.
- 24:21Speaker 5: The product, right, right right, And you know, obviously I
- 24:25Speaker 5: donated my profit. You know, I made good on my donation,
- 24:28Speaker 5: but it still gave me a signal boost in the company.
- 24:31Speaker 5: It still gave all of my uplines money and you know,
- 24:34Speaker 5: obviously benefits the company the most because it benefits the
- 24:37Speaker 5: people at the top the most. And so trying to
- 24:40Speaker 5: do something that like seemed charitable, but I could have
- 24:44Speaker 5: just said, hey, do you want to donate twenty dollars
- 24:46Speaker 5: to this charity? Like I didn't have to rope in
- 24:49Speaker 5: a product purchase. So you know, look, and.
- 24:53Speaker 3: You got the hype, you got the sale, you got
- 24:56Speaker 3: the you know, the moving on up the lane, you
- 24:59Speaker 3: got more people in and you knew the fact that
- 25:02Speaker 3: every time I told somebody I had cancer, then people
- 25:05Speaker 3: wanted to somehow rescue me. I'm just talking personally, and wandered.
- 25:08Speaker 3: They felt sympathy for me. They always said what can
- 25:10Speaker 3: I do for you? So when you announced that, then
- 25:14Speaker 3: you had the perfect lane of opportunity and you basically
- 25:18Speaker 3: took advantage of it. I'm not saying you're a bad person,
- 25:21Speaker 3: but that's what that's what can do, and that's what
- 25:24Speaker 3: can happen when you tell people you have cancer. And
- 25:26Speaker 3: so at that point, why did.
- 25:29Speaker 1: You did you? Did you?
- 25:32Speaker 3: I'm sure guilt took over right and feel and you
- 25:35Speaker 3: felt started feeling bad?
- 25:36Speaker 5: Correct, Yeah, And this was again like when I when
- 25:40Speaker 5: I stopped drinking. This is when a lot of these
- 25:42Speaker 5: things kind of started to hit me, like, you know,
- 25:44Speaker 5: that wasn't on the up and ups. And you know, again,
- 25:47Speaker 5: when you're when you put your trust into these people,
- 25:52Speaker 5: you know, in this I would say commercial cults. You know,
- 25:55Speaker 5: in this group that you're listening and repeating everything they're saying,
- 26:00Speaker 5: and you're being coachable and you're doing what they're telling
- 26:03Speaker 5: you to do, it's really easy to just fall into
- 26:05Speaker 5: that trap of okay, you know, you say this is
- 26:07Speaker 5: a good idea and it seems like a good idea
- 26:09Speaker 5: and then looking back and realizing, you know what, that
- 26:12Speaker 5: wasn't such a great idea.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Now, let me ask you this, Emily, how did you
- 26:16Speaker 3: get out? Because to me, it's like seven years. That's
- 26:18Speaker 3: a lot of people you you, I'm sure's a lot
- 26:21Speaker 3: of people underneath you, a lot of friends, a lot
- 26:23Speaker 3: of cousins, a lot of their friends. And then can
- 26:27Speaker 3: you just like walk away and say I'm out, don't
- 26:29Speaker 3: they feel like angry.
- 26:31Speaker 5: Yeah. Oh, it was a long process of you know,
- 26:35Speaker 5: waking up and realizing you know that that was part
- 26:38Speaker 5: of it, is like, wow, I've brought so many people
- 26:40Speaker 5: into this, how can I just leave? You know, I
- 26:42Speaker 5: stayed in for a long time.
- 26:43Speaker 3: Kind of well that kind of like validated its reality
- 26:46Speaker 3: because you was in for a long time. You know,
- 26:48Speaker 3: people just don't hang around something that's not good or
- 26:52Speaker 3: just the deceptive that long, and so and so you
- 26:56Speaker 3: were in there, like you said, twenty fourteen or twenty
- 26:58Speaker 3: twenty one, five years, six years, seven years. I'm I'm
- 27:03Speaker 3: if you tell me this is a good thing you've
- 27:05Speaker 3: been at five years, I'm going to listen.
- 27:07Speaker 1: I'm going to listen.
- 27:08Speaker 3: And so now, you know, but if you're telling me
- 27:11Speaker 3: you leaving and I'm I'm following your advice, did I
- 27:15Speaker 3: would tell you right now, I'm mad at you.
- 27:18Speaker 5: Mm hmm. Yeah. So yeah, I was, you know, just
- 27:20Speaker 5: real honest about the process. As I was kind of
- 27:23Speaker 5: realizing that I didn't like a lot of the behaviors anymore.
- 27:27Speaker 5: You know, I stopped doing the cold calling and the
- 27:29Speaker 5: reaching out, and I didn't recruit people anymore, and I
- 27:31Speaker 5: didn't sell the products anymore. I didn't terminate my account,
- 27:35Speaker 5: I didn't leave, but I you know, talk to my customers,
- 27:39Speaker 5: I talk to people on my team and just say, hey,
- 27:41Speaker 5: you know, I'm I'm uncomfortable with uncomfortable with this. I'm
- 27:44Speaker 5: not going to be actively selling this anymore. I'm basically
- 27:47Speaker 5: going to go dark. And I kind of assumed like
- 27:50Speaker 5: I'll just stay, you know, until my paycheck drives up
- 27:53Speaker 5: and and then that'll be it, right And then obviously,
- 27:57Speaker 5: like I decided to kind of go into rec readvocacy.
- 28:01Speaker 5: I put this on the back burner. COVID happened. I
- 28:04Speaker 5: mean it was kind of like this whole series of events,
- 28:07Speaker 5: and you know, during COVID, I really realized I could
- 28:09Speaker 5: not be associated anymore because there was so much problematic
- 28:13Speaker 5: and predatory activity in MLM that that's what made me
- 28:18Speaker 5: finally know Signance Sun in the termination form.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Wow, you know, Abily, you know, I want to thank
- 28:24Speaker 3: you for coming on my show. And I'm just just
- 28:26Speaker 3: saying that because you know, you told me a side
- 28:31Speaker 3: of you that is uncomfortable, you know, because it sounds
- 28:35Speaker 3: kind of manipulative.
- 28:37Speaker 1: It sounds kind of like, you know, you did what
- 28:39Speaker 1: you wanted.
- 28:40Speaker 3: To do to be successful, and then a lot of
- 28:43Speaker 3: it was tied to drinking a lot of an addiction
- 28:46Speaker 3: and you once you, once you cleared up that addiction,
- 28:49Speaker 3: you started to see your world a lot clearer and
- 28:51Speaker 3: it took you on the path of I want to
- 28:53Speaker 3: say redemption.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Is that the correct word?
- 28:56Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 28:56Speaker 5: You know, I just try and at this point like
- 28:59Speaker 5: do the next right, and you know, believe, I really
- 29:01Speaker 5: believe like the best apology has changed behavior. And that
- 29:04Speaker 5: was really my reasoning behind writing the book, Like I
- 29:07Speaker 5: fully throw myself under the bus, you know, just say like, hey,
- 29:09Speaker 5: I was complicit in this, I did this, and this
- 29:13Speaker 5: is why you need to hear about it because this
- 29:16Speaker 5: is what goes on and this is what to look
- 29:18Speaker 5: out for.
- 29:19Speaker 3: Well, well, you know one thing for sure, as my
- 29:22Speaker 3: listeners are listening to this, what advice would you give
- 29:26Speaker 3: them them if somebody approaches them about an MLM? But
- 29:30Speaker 3: let me ask you this. First of all, what do
- 29:32Speaker 3: you need to look for to make that will? Let
- 29:34Speaker 3: you know, is an email a multi level marketing platform?
- 29:38Speaker 1: What should they look at?
- 29:39Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 29:40Speaker 5: Yeah, So if you have a person talking to you
- 29:43Speaker 5: wanting to join a business, right you know, and asking
- 29:48Speaker 5: you for a buy in. If you have to pay
- 29:50Speaker 5: to join, I mean that's a pretty big red flag,
- 29:53Speaker 5: you know. Look, you can always just give it a
- 29:55Speaker 5: little Google, like say is this blank company in MLM
- 29:58Speaker 5: and you'll find out. But generally, if you have to
- 30:01Speaker 5: sign the dotted line and join, you know, have a
- 30:04Speaker 5: sponsor or an upline that is a multi level marketing company.
- 30:09Speaker 3: You know, my daughter I remember when she graduated from
- 30:11Speaker 3: college recently, she like, there are a lot of people
- 30:15Speaker 3: are using its kind of like a form of employment opportunity,
- 30:18Speaker 3: and so she was going in they were sending her
- 30:20Speaker 3: sal it was fifty thousand dollars a year or sixty
- 30:22Speaker 3: thousand dollars a year, and she gotta make all these
- 30:25Speaker 3: cold calls.
- 30:25Speaker 1: She had to buy this.
- 30:26Speaker 3: So I'll just tell everybody it's a lot of people
- 30:29Speaker 3: are using this as a form of employment. They call
- 30:32Speaker 3: it an employment, but it's not really employment. And like
- 30:35Speaker 3: you said, due to research, google the company and it
- 30:39Speaker 3: will help you get there. But more importantly, if you
- 30:41Speaker 3: have time, and I recommend that you have time, Emily,
- 30:44Speaker 3: how can we reach out to you? And if where
- 30:45Speaker 3: can we buy this book as it don't sell right now?
- 30:48Speaker 9: Hey, Han, you know what.
- 30:49Speaker 5: It comes out in one week, but you can pre
- 30:52Speaker 5: order it anywhere you know. Always support your local bookstore
- 30:54Speaker 5: if you can, and I'm on all platforms at Emily
- 30:58Speaker 5: Lynn Pulsen, Well.
- 30:59Speaker 3: Emily Paulson. Thank you for coming on Money Making Conversation.

- 31:06Speaker 3: lies behind multi level Marketing. Thank you for coming on

- 31:12Speaker 5: Thanks for having me cool.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Hey.
- 31:14Speaker 3: I told everybody I was gonna be doing the second
- 31:17Speaker 3: half of the show by myself, and guess what I
- 31:19Speaker 3: Am going to be talking about? How to be a
- 31:21Speaker 3: successful business owner? Well, guess what I have failed. I
- 31:27Speaker 3: have done so many mistakes and I'm gonna share some
- 31:30Speaker 3: of those mistakes. But more importantly, you can talk to

- 31:36Speaker 3: honest as I can if you have any questions about
- 31:40Speaker 3: being a successful business owner. Rushawn McDonald's here to answer
- 31:44Speaker 3: all your questions and also give you some advice.

- 33:10Speaker 6: Now, let's return to Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rashaan McDonald.
- 33:16Speaker 3: Let's get started here. I'm gonna ask some questions about it.
- 33:19Speaker 3: This Has anybody ever thought about you can raise your hand.
- 33:21Speaker 3: You can raise your hand and your car driving, you know,
- 33:24Speaker 3: just raise your eyebrow. Thought about starting a business? Why
- 33:27Speaker 3: didn't you do it? Have you ever thought about hiring
- 33:30Speaker 3: people for your business and you've hired the wrong people?
- 33:34Speaker 3: Have you ever thought about hiring relatives? And guess what,
- 33:37Speaker 3: you hired those relatives. Call me and let me know
- 33:42Speaker 3: about those relatives. Have you ever hired people that you
- 33:45Speaker 3: were getting a good deal on them? Oh they got
- 33:49Speaker 3: Oh they cheap. Oh that salary fits right into my budget.
- 33:53Speaker 3: But they don't have the experience. Am I? Am I
- 33:57Speaker 3: tapping into the right lanes with some of y'all out there?
- 34:00Speaker 3: Or how about starting your business and you don't even
- 34:02Speaker 3: have a budget. It's just a good idea? Am I
- 34:08Speaker 3: tapping into anybody out there?
- 34:10Speaker 1: Yet? Okay? How about this? How about this? You start
- 34:13Speaker 1: a business with somebody you don't know?
- 34:17Speaker 3: How about that? How about how about this? You start
- 34:20Speaker 3: a business? You know, I'm from Texas. So they said
- 34:23Speaker 3: you can start a business with a handshake. That's what
- 34:25Speaker 3: would be contractual. I've done that before. Yeah, let me
- 34:30Speaker 3: get started here. How to be a successful business owner.
- 34:34Speaker 3: That's a bold statement for me to say marketing and branding.
- 34:38Speaker 3: Have a company called thirty eight fifteen Media, Inc. Based
- 34:41Speaker 3: in Atlanta, Georgia. I started it as an idea and
- 34:45Speaker 3: I just started hiring people. Were they the best qualified people?
- 34:51Speaker 6: No?
- 34:52Speaker 3: In hindsight, No, But I knew them. I knew them,
- 34:56Speaker 3: they knew mean, we had long term relationships. They could
- 35:00Speaker 3: do certain things, and I hired them. That's the number
- 35:06Speaker 3: one problem with most people who fail in this business
- 35:10Speaker 3: is they hire people just because they're close to them.
- 35:13Speaker 3: They hire people because they make them feel comfortable. You
- 35:18Speaker 3: hire people because they're just right there and they're available
- 35:22Speaker 3: to be hired. That's the number one mistake and the
- 35:28Speaker 3: number two mistake. Do you have time for your business?
- 35:33Speaker 1: Wow? You know I would tell people this. I get
- 35:38Speaker 1: up atfore thirty money to do fraud. That's what time.
- 35:41Speaker 1: Four thirty am I get up and people always going
- 35:43Speaker 1: whoa whoa four thirty when you're doing it front thirty.
- 35:48Speaker 3: I was fortunate to give a speech uh I was
- 35:52Speaker 3: at It was an area in Atlanta called Thoronias, right
- 35:55Speaker 3: outside of Atlanta, Georgia Chamber of Commerce, and I was
- 35:59Speaker 3: speaking to them. That's one of the other reasons they
- 36:00Speaker 3: brought me over. It was to speak about how to
- 36:03Speaker 3: be a successful business owner. And when you're speaking to
- 36:06Speaker 3: typ of people about being a successful business owner, one
- 36:10Speaker 3: thing you have to admit that is that you made mistakes.
- 36:14Speaker 3: I opened a comedy club in Houston, Texas called Hip
- 36:17Speaker 3: Hop Comedy Style. I got in business with a person
- 36:22Speaker 3: I didn't even know. Well, guess what. He was a
- 36:26Speaker 3: stand up comic too, so he liked telling jokes. I
- 36:31Speaker 3: liked telling jokes. Yeah, I guess he make a good
- 36:34Speaker 3: business part. So that's how we got That's like you,
- 36:37Speaker 3: that's like you like to eat chicken, and you know
- 36:40Speaker 3: somebody who makes good chickens, So y'all just gonna go
- 36:42Speaker 3: into chicken business.
- 36:43Speaker 1: Same same thing, same thing.
- 36:46Speaker 3: I didn't know his likes, his dislikes. I didn't know
- 36:49Speaker 3: his work happens. I didn't know if he like getting
- 36:52Speaker 3: up early or do he like staying late? Did he
- 36:54Speaker 3: even have an idea of how to run a business.
- 36:57Speaker 3: That's how I got in business. But the other side
- 37:00Speaker 3: of that is that it became a very popular comedy
- 37:06Speaker 3: club lines out the Door. I used to do a
- 37:08Speaker 3: show on Thursday tickets are going sell on Monday. They
- 37:12Speaker 3: were sold out in the hour. That's how popular. Was
- 37:14Speaker 3: a room seats like three hundred and fifty people, a
- 37:17Speaker 3: line out the door. On Thursday show showtime, I hit
- 37:20Speaker 3: the stage at eight nine o'clock. People wouldn't go in
- 37:23Speaker 3: the room until it was nine. Eight thirty was an
- 37:25Speaker 3: empty room. They didn't want to see the other comics.
- 37:27Speaker 3: I walk in nine o'clock, room packed, eight thirty to
- 37:31Speaker 3: eight fifty five. Room was empty, nine o'clock packed. We
- 37:36Speaker 3: were making money. But what just what what happens when
- 37:39Speaker 3: you start making money? I forgot? You pay taxes. You
- 37:45Speaker 3: pay taxes on tickets, you pay taxis on liquor. So
- 37:50Speaker 3: so those little things. So all that money that you're making,
- 37:55Speaker 3: somebody else want a piece up. So you can't look
- 37:57Speaker 3: at ten dollars as a real ten dollars. But because
- 38:02Speaker 3: I didn't have a budget, because I didn't take time
- 38:05Speaker 3: to understand how to run a business, I was just
- 38:09Speaker 3: doing all the wrong things. So I'm sure a lot
- 38:13Speaker 3: of you guys out there, ladies, I think because women
- 38:16Speaker 3: are the fastest growing entrepreneurial part in this company, especially
- 38:20Speaker 3: black women, y'all just running things now in a good
- 38:25Speaker 3: way opening up business.
- 38:27Speaker 1: I'm sure you opening up business a lot more than me,
- 38:30Speaker 1: better than me.
- 38:32Speaker 3: So I was making money but couldn't understand how selling out.
- 38:39Speaker 3: But I can't pay myself, so I was just working
- 38:44Speaker 3: for free because I didn't have Because what you can't do,
- 38:48Speaker 3: I'll tell you something about this. The biggest mistake in
- 38:51Speaker 3: a business. You can't open a business and then try
- 38:54Speaker 3: to sell a budget because now you're playing catch up
- 39:00Speaker 3: because you can't justify because you didn't have a budget
- 39:04Speaker 3: at the beginning. You to know why you have all
- 39:05Speaker 3: these people hanging around you getting checks for you or
- 39:08Speaker 3: wanting to get checked for you, then you understand why
- 39:11Speaker 3: you fail. So when you're making money as a business owner,
- 39:16Speaker 3: you can't be successful because of the reason that if
- 39:17Speaker 3: you try to be successful, because you never had a plan.
- 39:22Speaker 3: That's the numb more reason we fail. And the other
- 39:24Speaker 3: number one reason we fail is do you have time
- 39:26Speaker 3: for your business. I can't tell you how many people
- 39:29Speaker 3: get mad because the store after a while, they open
- 39:33Speaker 3: their business, It opens a ten but they getting there
- 39:36Speaker 3: at the same time the customer should get there. They
- 39:40Speaker 3: getting mad because the customers got their own time, not
- 39:43Speaker 3: knowing they got a restaurant here, they got to pre
- 39:45Speaker 3: set up everything the customers get y'all ever be in
- 39:48Speaker 3: a restaurant.
- 39:48Speaker 1: You've been in a restaurants where, oh, we don't have
- 39:50Speaker 1: that on the menu today. Don't that make you mad?
- 39:54Speaker 1: Oh we ran out? How you gonna run out of
- 39:57Speaker 1: something that's on your menu? Then you plan to make this?
- 40:02Speaker 1: Then you plan this, make this.
- 40:04Speaker 3: A part of your regular I've been I've been in
- 40:06Speaker 3: restaurants where they have actually used a marker to strike
- 40:12Speaker 3: through things that they don't do their menu no more.
- 40:14Speaker 3: Now I'm supposed to come back for that. Here's a
- 40:18Speaker 3: little note now about business. It's called consistency. I always
- 40:22Speaker 3: tell people a little I'm just using Target as an example.
- 40:25Speaker 3: If Target, if you drove by Target at night and
- 40:29Speaker 3: they sign wasn't on, you think they'd be closed. So
- 40:32Speaker 3: if like on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, Target sign was on,
- 40:36Speaker 3: but Thursday, Friday and Saturday was off, you think they'd
- 40:39Speaker 3: be out of business. Or you stop trusting them so
- 40:43Speaker 3: you won't go there, or put them on the list,
- 40:46Speaker 3: and you actually started spreading rumors, negative rumors about Target
- 40:51Speaker 3: or business like Target, And that's what happens if we're inconsistent.
- 40:55Speaker 3: So if you if you opening a business and you're
- 40:59Speaker 3: saying you doing things, you've got to be there to
- 41:01Speaker 3: do it. And everybody sees the profit line. You know,
- 41:04Speaker 3: they buy franchise. You know, they want to buy franchise
- 41:06Speaker 3: like Chick fil A or jagon Bars, or McDonald's or
- 41:09Speaker 3: they heard or or Bojangles. That's a real hot franchise
- 41:14Speaker 3: right now that people are buying. It still requires work.
- 41:19Speaker 3: And so what these franchises try to do they try
- 41:22Speaker 3: to train you. So you're gonna pay a fee, but
- 41:25Speaker 3: they just don't let you just run out there. They're
- 41:28Speaker 3: gonna find out if you have time too to run
- 41:31Speaker 3: that franchise, because they're applying the same business principles that
- 41:35Speaker 3: I am doing in this conversation I'm having with you
- 41:38Speaker 3: right now, the conversation of being able to sit down
- 41:42Speaker 3: and apply to you a makeshift plan, a make sense
- 41:46Speaker 3: plan of how you can be successful.
- 41:48Speaker 1: So when you buy a.
- 41:48Speaker 3: Franchise, what they do is they bring you in, they
- 41:52Speaker 3: sit you down, and they have you work with somebody
- 41:55Speaker 3: who has your best interests. Listen to me, now, your
- 42:00Speaker 3: best interest because what they don't want to do is
- 42:03Speaker 3: put a franchise out there.
- 42:04Speaker 1: And it clothes because it makes them look bad.
- 42:07Speaker 3: So now if you don't have time, but you heard,
- 42:10Speaker 3: did these franchises make a lot of money?
- 42:12Speaker 1: Then they gonna have a problem with you.
- 42:14Speaker 3: Then you're gonna get mad at them because they telling
- 42:16Speaker 3: you why you're not there to open up their business
- 42:19Speaker 3: on time. It guess what they gonna do after a while,
- 42:22Speaker 3: they'll come take their license. Then what you're trying to
- 42:28Speaker 3: do now you're trying to suit. Now you now you
- 42:30Speaker 3: huddle up with your friends and family, all you in
- 42:33Speaker 3: the corners, just cussing and fussing like they've done you wrong.
- 42:36Speaker 3: But you're the one didn't live up to the standards.
- 42:38Speaker 3: They have copyright there they have. You just can't let
- 42:41Speaker 3: anybody in the kitchen. If you making donuts, you just
- 42:45Speaker 3: can't let it. You just can't shoot a video back
- 42:48Speaker 3: there for TikTok making donuts back there, making cakes back there?
- 42:53Speaker 1: You mad because that's they that's their recipes. Everybody can't
- 42:59Speaker 1: see that.
- 43:00Speaker 3: But because you don't know the rules, you want to
- 43:02Speaker 3: try to make your own rules. That's why you want
- 43:04Speaker 3: to be successful. Let me tell you why I was
- 43:07Speaker 3: not successful at my comedy club, even though lines at
- 43:10Speaker 3: the door.
- 43:12Speaker 1: You can look it up.
- 43:13Speaker 3: Hip Hop Comedy Stop nineteen ninety two to nineteen ninety four, Houston,
- 43:16Speaker 3: Texas one of the most popular comedy clubs in the country.
- 43:20Speaker 3: Everybody came through the Joe Tury, Cedric did a tainer
- 43:25Speaker 3: some more. All the big stars came through there, Steve Harvey.
- 43:31Speaker 12: Everybody came to that club, made no money, made no money,
- 43:42Speaker 12: broke even because I didn't have a budget, because I
- 43:47Speaker 12: didn't know what I was doing.
- 43:49Speaker 3: I was in business with a person I didn't know,
- 43:53Speaker 3: and he had a full time job. So guess what
- 43:59Speaker 3: he kept saying, Hey, man, you got it, you got it,
- 44:04Speaker 3: you got it. Well guess what I got tired of
- 44:06Speaker 3: being the person who got it? Then I have family.
- 44:13Speaker 6: Whooah.
- 44:14Speaker 1: When we come back, we're gonna talk about hiring family.
- 44:17Speaker 1: Who hire family? That's a big a mistake you can make.
- 44:20Speaker 3: Hire family now, especially when the mama, when the mama
- 44:24Speaker 3: then told you to hire them. We'll be right back
- 44:28Speaker 3: for boy money making Conversation, Masks class, don't go the
- 44:31Speaker 3: where y'all I just got started.
- 44:32Speaker 6: Who We'll be right back with more money making conversations.
- 44:42Speaker 6: Masterclass with Rushawn McDonald.
- 44:46Speaker 7: You are now tuned into the Money Making Conversations Minute
- 44:49Speaker 7: of Inspiration with Rashawn McDonald.
- 44:52Speaker 8: Hollywood super producer Will Packer has produced films that have
- 44:55Speaker 8: earned more than one billion dollars at the box office.
- 44:58Speaker 8: Will Packer tells me why marketing brand as a producer
- 45:01Speaker 8: wasn't normal in Hollywood.
- 45:03Speaker 13: Well, when I came in as a producer, I knew
- 45:05Speaker 13: how important it was to connect with an artist. That
- 45:08Speaker 13: really started with my journey at FAMU because I made
- 45:11Speaker 13: my first film project, which was Chocolate City, while I
- 45:15Speaker 13: was still an undergraduate at FAMU, I was a junior.
- 45:19Speaker 13: We shot Chocolate City, this a little bitty movie, and
- 45:21Speaker 13: in order for that film to be successful, I had
- 45:24Speaker 13: to go out to my audience, my core audience, and
- 45:27Speaker 13: I realized I needed to go out and explain to
- 45:30Speaker 13: that audience why they should care about this film.
- 45:32Speaker 4: And that really.
- 45:33Speaker 13: Started something that I still do to this day, which
- 45:36Speaker 13: is going out and trying to touch people with every
- 45:38Speaker 13: project that I have.
- 45:39Speaker 8: If you want to hear this full interview with Will Becker,
- 45:42Speaker 8: visit Moneymakingconversation dot com.
- 45:45Speaker 6: Now let's return to Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rashaan McDonald.
- 45:50Speaker 3: Hi, this is Rashan McDonald. I'm telling everybody this is
- 45:53Speaker 3: my opinion. It's not the opinion the station you're listening
- 45:55Speaker 3: to this RuSHA McDonald just pouring his soul lout on
- 45:59Speaker 3: this show today a little bit. I'm gonna start doing
- 46:01Speaker 3: this more off.
- 46:02Speaker 10: I like this.
- 46:03Speaker 3: I know I'm I have great guests, but I think
- 46:05Speaker 3: you guys need to hear. How did I become the
- 46:07Speaker 3: person I had? I became, I become and I will
- 46:10Speaker 3: continue to become. How to be a successful business owned
- 46:12Speaker 3: business owner is the topic?
- 46:15Speaker 1: Mars.
- 46:15Speaker 3: How are you doing? My friend Morris is on the line.
- 46:17Speaker 3: Talk to me, March's You'm Sean mcgone speaking. How you doing?
- 46:19Speaker 4: Hey, I'm doing well?
- 46:20Speaker 1: How are you what you want to talk about? Mars?
- 46:23Speaker 4: Good? So I wanted to find out if you have
- 46:26Speaker 4: any recommended sources where we could learn how to properly
- 46:31Speaker 4: budget for a business. I know, of course you can
- 46:33Speaker 4: google and things like that, but are there any resources
- 46:36Speaker 4: that you specifically recommend to help us properly establish a
- 46:41Speaker 4: budget for our business?
- 46:43Speaker 3: Absolutely? Call it small Business Administration. They're in every major
- 46:47Speaker 3: city and please go to them. Because when I opened
- 46:50Speaker 3: my comedy club, I went there, if I and when
- 46:52Speaker 3: I went there, and I'm just using a club for
- 46:56Speaker 3: his example. If they tell you, if you can tell
- 46:58Speaker 3: them your club is three thousand square feet, they'll tell
- 47:00Speaker 3: you how many table chairs you need. They'll tell you
- 47:02Speaker 3: how many glasses you need. They'll tell you everything because
- 47:06Speaker 3: they have books. And then they have another.
- 47:07Speaker 4: Part called Score.
- 47:09Speaker 1: And Score is made up.
- 47:10Speaker 3: Of retired executives, people who are entrepreneurs, people who have
- 47:14Speaker 3: been in the business successful, and they can mentor you.
- 47:18Speaker 1: They can mentor you so you can ask these honest questions.
- 47:20Speaker 1: It's called score, and it's called small business administration. And
- 47:24Speaker 1: believe me, I tell people about this all the time.
- 47:27Speaker 1: Do not step out there dreaming without a plan.
- 47:30Speaker 3: Because you dream about the plant, They're gonna come and
- 47:32Speaker 3: slap you in the face and wake you up and
- 47:33Speaker 3: it will be a nightmare when you wake up.
- 47:35Speaker 1: I walk up into a nightmare. I kid you not, Morris.
- 47:38Speaker 3: I was making money and I never saw none of
- 47:41Speaker 3: it because I didn't have a budget. I didn't understand
- 47:44Speaker 3: who I was.
- 47:44Speaker 1: In business with. And guess what.
- 47:46Speaker 3: In the end, I hired my relatives and guess what,
- 47:49Speaker 3: they had full time jobs. So they will not commit
- 47:52Speaker 3: it to my dream because they had to get back
- 47:54Speaker 3: to work the next day. So Small Business Administration SBA
- 48:02Speaker 3: and it's called score like you score a touchdown those
- 48:05Speaker 3: two organizations.
- 48:06Speaker 1: You can get it through Small Businessmen SBA. Right here
- 48:08Speaker 1: in Georgia. Is also in Texas, is also in New York.
- 48:11Speaker 1: Is also any major state, any major city has it.
- 48:14Speaker 1: I would advise you to call them and guess what.
- 48:16Speaker 1: It's free.
- 48:18Speaker 4: Oh excellent, that's even better.
- 48:20Speaker 3: Well, good luck, my friend. Thank you for calling the
- 48:22Speaker 3: money man competence in master call. He hope you got
- 48:24Speaker 3: somebody of the call. Thank you, my friend, Angela.
- 48:27Speaker 1: How you doing, I'm good?
- 48:30Speaker 10: Thanks taking my call.
- 48:32Speaker 1: What question can I answer for you? Angela?
- 48:35Speaker 10: I would love I appreciate you sharing your your failures
- 48:39Speaker 10: because I think that helped sets the stage for me
- 48:43Speaker 10: going into acquiring a business man. So yeah, please just
- 48:47Speaker 10: continue to share some of the lessons.
- 48:49Speaker 4: Learned because I'm learning a lot.
- 48:51Speaker 10: Don't hire your family, plan your work and work well.
- 48:54Speaker 1: Team.
- 48:56Speaker 3: It's higher I hire your family, though, because I don't
- 48:59Speaker 3: want to get all family was a bad reputation. Now
- 49:01Speaker 3: do not hire your families. If your mama told you
- 49:04Speaker 3: to hire Okay, okay, don't hire them that way. Don't
- 49:09Speaker 3: hire your family out of love. Okay, those two things. Now,
- 49:14Speaker 3: if your family is qualified, they've done the work, they
- 49:17Speaker 3: will put in the work they're hired, you treat them like.
- 49:20Speaker 1: Here's the thing I would tell people.
- 49:23Speaker 3: If you hire a family member, they should have the
- 49:25Speaker 3: same qualifications and put out the same effort of somebody
- 49:29Speaker 3: you would not know that you want to hire for
- 49:31Speaker 3: that same position.
- 49:32Speaker 1: But if you're bringing them in and you loan the.
- 49:34Speaker 3: Qualifications, you will lawn the work ethic. You will lower
- 49:38Speaker 3: the responsibility for that same job. So now you've lowered
- 49:42Speaker 3: the standard for that job three times. So why do
- 49:46Speaker 3: you expect that person to be effective when you need
- 49:49Speaker 3: them to work forty hours a week?
- 49:51Speaker 4: Is it?
- 49:51Speaker 1: I'm gonna roll here. I gotta tell you something else.
- 49:55Speaker 3: If you hire somebody, then they start changing the rules
- 49:59Speaker 3: on how they work.
- 50:02Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying.
- 50:03Speaker 3: Yeah, See, I'm very clear and when I hire people,
- 50:06Speaker 3: and you should be very clear because you you send
- 50:09Speaker 3: you send a letter to them outlining the job description,
- 50:13Speaker 3: you both agree on the salary. M After a couple
- 50:18Speaker 3: of weeks, they started they start coming in and making
- 50:22Speaker 3: an excuse.
- 50:22Speaker 1: You like, well, you know I got to pick up
- 50:26Speaker 1: the kids. Okay, you tell me about that when I
- 50:28Speaker 1: hired you.
- 50:29Speaker 5: Okay, you tell me about that.
- 50:31Speaker 1: Or I gotta leave work early because of traffic.
- 50:36Speaker 3: You tell me about that when I hired you, though,
- 50:38Speaker 3: So see what happens is you have to be able
- 50:41Speaker 3: to see a certain questions you can't ask when you
- 50:43Speaker 3: hire people. But if somebody ubers to the interview, I
- 50:49Speaker 3: wouldn't hire m hmm.
- 50:52Speaker 10: Okay, you lay the foundation straight from the beginning.
- 50:57Speaker 3: But of course you know there's certain questions you cannot
- 50:59Speaker 3: ask when you add But you have to have common
- 51:02Speaker 3: sense and whole approach. If you should ask somebody where
- 51:05Speaker 3: they live. You know, my my company up in Alpharetta.
- 51:12Speaker 3: Now anybody down there by the airport, I have to
- 51:16Speaker 3: question whether or not they can come to my job
- 51:18Speaker 3: on the regular basis. I just have to question that
- 51:21Speaker 3: because I know there's heavy traffic in the morning and
- 51:23Speaker 3: the afternoon, and my job is eight to five, So
- 51:26Speaker 3: I don't care how much they say they.
- 51:28Speaker 1: Want the job.
- 51:30Speaker 3: I have to do common sense realize I may be
- 51:33Speaker 3: compromising my business because guess what happens, They're gonna come
- 51:37Speaker 3: in and start changing the rules. Or traffic U family issues. Uh,
- 51:43Speaker 3: you know, and then then they're gonna say something to you.
- 51:45Speaker 3: They're really gonna make you mad. You know, your job
- 51:47Speaker 3: kind of far.
- 51:54Speaker 4: But you know all that.
- 51:55Speaker 3: But you knew all that when you hire that person,
- 51:59Speaker 3: because guess what they told you where they lived, but
- 52:01Speaker 3: you ignored it.
- 52:04Speaker 1: So Angela, thank you for calling. These are some of
- 52:06Speaker 1: the little things. And I'm not finished.
- 52:08Speaker 3: So keep you keep your radio on because I got
- 52:10Speaker 3: more to talk about. Keep your podcast all.
- 52:12Speaker 10: That, guess I will.
- 52:15Speaker 1: Now, here's the problem that a lot.
- 52:16Speaker 3: Of people have when they open the business. This I'm
- 52:19Speaker 3: talking the business owner's talking to entrepreneurs.
- 52:23Speaker 1: Listen to me. Parking. I don't know why.
- 52:28Speaker 3: People think they can just open up, open up a
- 52:31Speaker 3: business and not worry about parking. I had a comedy club, y'all.
- 52:37Speaker 1: See see I see see That comedy club taught me
- 52:40Speaker 1: a lot, y'all. I had no parking. All my parking
- 52:45Speaker 1: was on the streets out there on the streets.
- 52:49Speaker 3: Three hundred people cars parked out therewn the street, up
- 52:51Speaker 3: and down the streets all up. Boy, I was popular, though,
- 52:55Speaker 3: But guess what happens when you just parking any kind
- 52:59Speaker 3: of way, any kind of way, any kind of place.
- 53:03Speaker 1: Bad things start happening, bad people.
- 53:07Speaker 3: Start showing up, start busting in car windows, so people
- 53:12Speaker 3: would leave my comedy shows come back in ever shown
- 53:18Speaker 3: my car being broken into? So what So then my
- 53:25Speaker 3: insurance got to cover that. So suddenly my insurance starts
- 53:29Speaker 3: going up because I got a business, beautiful building, fantastic
- 53:37Speaker 3: no parking though, But I ignored the no parking issue
- 53:42Speaker 3: because guess what, I fell in love with the building.
- 53:46Speaker 3: So I had to hire people to walk up and
- 53:51Speaker 3: down the streets to stop people from busting into cars.
- 53:57Speaker 3: Now you see why I wasn't making no money When
- 54:00Speaker 3: you make all these ignorant decisions no budget in business,
- 54:05Speaker 3: somebody didn't know.
- 54:08Speaker 1: By the leasing the building for two years with no parking.
- 54:15Speaker 13: Rut.
- 54:18Speaker 3: I'm gonna close this out about this person you should
- 54:21Speaker 3: never ever hire. Do not hire inexperience employees because they
- 54:29Speaker 3: are cheaper. I'm let you let that soak in a minute.
- 54:35Speaker 3: Do not hire inexperience employees because they are cheaper. One
- 54:44Speaker 3: they have no leadership abilities. Two they need constant supervision.
- 54:52Speaker 3: Three they do not understand the position and the company.
- 54:58Speaker 3: It will not help you win WI in capital letters
- 55:01Speaker 3: long term, and I'm gonna put a little quote around here.
- 55:09Speaker 3: I said something by relatives, do not hire friends.
- 55:18Speaker 1: I've done that.
- 55:20Speaker 3: It has burnt me. When it came time to make
- 55:24Speaker 3: a decision. They reminded me that I did them wrong.
- 55:30Speaker 3: They reminded me that they were the victim. They reminded
- 55:36Speaker 3: me that I didn't know what I was doing. And
- 55:39Speaker 3: you're exactly right because I was running a business based
- 55:44Speaker 3: on friendship, no budget, family and a partner I didn't know.
- 55:54Speaker 3: You cannot win like that. Ladies and gentlemen, as you
- 55:57Speaker 3: listen to me talk about marketing and branding and how
- 56:00Speaker 3: to be a successful business owner, the bottom line, it's
- 56:04Speaker 3: on you look in the mirror and make a decision
- 56:07Speaker 3: that benefits you, your family, and your future.
