- 0:00Acts chapter 5. But a man named Ananias with his
- 0:03wife's Sapphira sold a piece of property and kept back some of
- 0:06the price for himself with his wife's full knowledge, and
- 0:09bringing a portion of it, he laid it at the apostles feet.
- 0:12But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie
- 0:16to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back some of the price of the
- 0:18land while it remained unsold? Did it not remain your own?
- 0:22And after it was sold, was it not under your control?
- 0:25Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your
- 0:27heart? You have not lied to men, but to
- 0:29God. And as he heard these words,
- 0:32Ananias fell down and breathed his last in great fear, came
- 0:35over all who heard of it. The young men got up and covered
- 0:38him up, and after carrying him out, they buried him.
- 0:41Now there elapsed an interval of about 3 hours.
- 0:43And his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
- 0:46And Peter responded to her. Tell me whether you sold the
- 0:48land for such and such a price? And she said, Yes, that was the
- 0:51price. And Peter said to her, Why is it
- 0:54that you have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to
- 0:56the test? Behold, the feet of those who
- 0:59have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry
- 1:01you out as well. And immediately she fell at his
- 1:04feet, and breathed her last. And the young men came in and
- 1:06found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside
- 1:09her husband. In great fear came over the
- 1:12whole church, and over all who heard of these things at the
- 1:15hands of the apostles. Many signs and wonders were
- 1:17taking place among the people, and they were all with 1 accord
- 1:20in Solomon's portico, but none of the rest dared to associate
- 1:23with them. However, the people held them in
- 1:25high esteem and all the more believers in the Lord.
- 1:28Multitudes of men and women were constantly added to their
- 1:31number, to such an extent that they even carried the sick out
- 1:34into the streets and laid them on cots and pallets, so that
- 1:37when Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on any one of
- 1:40them. Also the people from the cities
- 1:42in the vicinity of Jerusalem were coming together, bringing
- 1:45people who were sick or afflicted with unclean spirits,
- 1:47and they were all being healed. But the high priest rose up
- 1:51along with all his associates, that is, the sect of the
- 1:53Sadducees, and they were filled with jealousy.
- 1:56They laid hands on the apostles and put them in a public jail.
- 1:59But during the night an Angel of the Lord opened the gates of the
- 2:02prison, and taking them out, he said, Go stand and speak to the
- 2:05people in the temple, the whole message of this life.
- 2:08Upon hearing this, they entered into the temple about Daybreak
- 2:10and began to teach. And when the high priest and his
- 2:13associates came, they called the council together, even all the
- 2:16Senate of the Sons of Israel, and sent orders to the prison
- 2:19house for them to be brought. But the officers who came did
- 2:22not find them in the prison, and they returned and reported back,
- 2:25saying, We found the prison house locked quite securely, and
- 2:28the guards standing at the doors.
- 2:30When we had opened up, we found no one inside.
- 2:33Now when the captain of the temple guard and the chief
- 2:35priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about
- 2:38them as to what would come of this.
- 2:40But someone came and reported to them.
- 2:42The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and
- 2:45teaching the people. Then the captain went along with
- 2:47the officers and proceeded to bring them back without
- 2:49violence, for they were afraid of the people that they might be
- 2:52stoned. When they had brought them, they
- 2:55stood them before the council. The high priest questioned them,
- 2:57saying, We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching
- 3:00in this name, and yet you have filled Jerusalem with your
- 3:03teaching and intend to bring this man's blood upon us.
- 3:07But Peter and the apostles answered, We must obey God
- 3:10rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up
- 3:13Jesus, whom you had put to death by hanging him on a cross.
- 3:17He is the one whom God exalted to his right hand as a Prince
- 3:19and a Saviour to grant repentance to Israel and
- 3:22forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses of these
- 3:25things, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to
- 3:28those who obey him. But when they heard this, they
- 3:31were cut to the quick and intended to kill them.
- 3:33But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, respected by
- 3:36all the people, stood up in the council and gave orders to put
- 3:39the men outside for a short time.
- 3:41And he said to them, Men of Israel, take care of what you
- 3:44propose to do with these men. For some time ago Thudus rose up
- 3:48claiming to be somebody, and a group of about 400 men joined up
- 3:52with him. But he was killed, and all who
- 3:54followed him were dispersed and came to nothing.
- 3:57After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the
- 4:00census and drew away some people after him, He too perished, and
- 4:04all those who followed him were scattered.
- 4:06So in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men
- 4:09and let them alone. For if this plan or action is of
- 4:12men, it will be overthrown, but if it is of God, you will not be
- 4:16able to overthrow them, or else you may even be found fighting
- 4:19against God. They took his advice, and after
- 4:22calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them
- 4:25not to speak in the name of Jesus and then release them.
- 4:28So they went on their way from the presence of the council,
- 4:30rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer
- 4:33shame for his name. And every day in the temple and
- 4:36from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching
- 4:39Jesus as the Christ.
