- 0:00Speaker 1: My next guest is a chart topping gospel recording artist
- 0:03Speaker 1: who is a three time Grammy Award nominee. He's in
- 0:06Speaker 1: loving time Stellar Award winner, a Dove Award winner, a
- 0:10Speaker 1: Billboard Music Award winner. His latest album is Broken Record.
- 0:15Speaker 1: This is his fourth album. It will be released on Friday,
- 0:18Speaker 1: November one of this year. Please welcome the money making conversation,
- 0:24Speaker 1: my man, Travis Green. Yo, what's up? I'm done? Great?
- 0:31Speaker 1: First of all, Travis, where are you from? Where were
- 0:33Speaker 1: you born? And what did you grow up at? Born? Delaware?
- 0:37Speaker 1: First two years Germany primarily, Um, I grew up in Georgia,
- 0:42Speaker 1: State of Georgia. And um now I'm in Toronto, so
- 0:45Speaker 1: cut all over that you saw a Southern board keeping
- 0:47Speaker 1: him Southern root, South Carolina. Good food down there in
- 0:49Speaker 1: South Carolina. Good food. Baby, I'm sing to my rooms. Yeah,
- 0:55Speaker 1: let me ask you this. You know I'm gonna tell
- 0:56Speaker 1: you this as a gospel music artist, Are you can?
- 1:00Speaker 1: I can? I say you're You're You're different from anyone
- 1:03Speaker 1: that I'm gonna just saying to me. Rashard McDonald, you know,
- 1:06Speaker 1: you know a lot of people like I managed Steve Harvey,
- 1:08Speaker 1: so Stephen I did uh, you know, the Gospel celebration
- 1:12Speaker 1: for like thirteen straight years. So I'm deeply rooted and
- 1:15Speaker 1: watching gospel performers, you know, and and so in my
- 1:19Speaker 1: and my beliefs and not my understanding. Now tell me
- 1:23Speaker 1: what is your style before we really get into the interview,
- 1:26Speaker 1: and then I would give you my impressions because I'm impressed.
- 1:28Speaker 1: First of all, I'm impressed and I'm a big faith
- 1:31Speaker 1: So let me just say that. So anything you say,
- 1:34Speaker 1: nothing negative is gonna come out of my mouth about you.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I'm just gonna let you know what I see, what
- 1:39Speaker 1: I want to hear, what you are, what you feel
- 1:41Speaker 1: you're projecting, and I'm gonna tell you the greatness that
- 1:43Speaker 1: I see. Yeah, I would say, man, First of all,
- 1:46Speaker 1: I had a capital in a word, I say energy. Man.
- 1:50Speaker 1: You know, I'm better passionate about what I do. And
- 1:53Speaker 1: you know, jetty um, and I think it's you know,
- 1:57Speaker 1: it's like biblical truth, but in the digestible warm at
- 2:00Speaker 1: And that's really what I've been getting to do. To
- 2:02Speaker 1: take these ideas about God. Uh, I like to call
- 2:06Speaker 1: revelations of who He is and presented in the melodic form.
- 2:11Speaker 1: That's catchy, that's easy to Uh, that's a poachable for
- 2:15Speaker 1: the listener. Um, but but hopefully life changing wants the
- 2:19Speaker 1: word really get inside of you. And so that's that's
- 2:21Speaker 1: my style. Man, it's a beautiful style. Now tell me
- 2:24Speaker 1: who is your audience? My audience is is really done
- 2:29Speaker 1: verse believe it or not? And I believe no, no, no, no, no, Travis,
- 2:33Speaker 1: I believe it. Okay. Yeah, Well I didn't know until
- 2:39Speaker 1: I went out on tour, man, because you know, we
- 2:41Speaker 1: don't tour in churches. We're doing clubs when I'm on tour.
- 2:44Speaker 1: We're doing theaters and bars and stuff like that. And
- 2:47Speaker 1: its super diverse. Man. I mean, you got you got
- 2:50Speaker 1: you know, my my family in the room. You got blacks,
- 2:53Speaker 1: you got UM, but then you got white and you
- 2:55Speaker 1: got Hispanics. And I think the music is just in
- 2:59Speaker 1: such a way that UM and that really mattered people
- 3:01Speaker 1: skin tone. They can really kind of take it in
- 3:04Speaker 1: UM and they get you know, they get caught into
- 3:07Speaker 1: the energy of what we're relenting. So it's really cool man. Yeah,
- 3:11Speaker 1: it's really Uh, it's it's a beautiful thing, first of all,
- 3:14Speaker 1: and because of the fact that you're you're you're you're
- 3:17Speaker 1: doing the same lyrics that other African American artists are doing.
- 3:22Speaker 1: But it's sometimes I just read there is just resonating
- 3:24Speaker 1: in general, it is resonating with the African American community. Now,
- 3:28Speaker 1: your music and your tone, it's kind of like almost
- 3:30Speaker 1: a low rock and roll. It's kind of like, I
- 3:33Speaker 1: won't say rock and roll is not that hard, but
- 3:35Speaker 1: it's almost if I had to put a style on it.
- 3:37Speaker 1: It reminds me of and just who then the blowfish,
- 3:40Speaker 1: Darris Rock. It's like watching him. It's like watching him,
- 3:43Speaker 1: and I don't think that's a negative thing to say
- 3:45Speaker 1: because he had the same He had the same ability
- 3:49Speaker 1: to have a crossover audience. You know, the diversity of
- 3:52Speaker 1: people out there appeally to his music even though he
- 3:54Speaker 1: was an African American and he was just singing from
- 3:57Speaker 1: the heart, relatable music like you were saying, but or
- 4:00Speaker 1: just have to be gospel. Yeah, South Carolina boy too.
- 4:04Speaker 1: So it makes sense. Absolutely, I'm very relatable. And so
- 4:08Speaker 1: now now here's the thing, because you know, I'm reading
- 4:11Speaker 1: your bio and like I said, uh before, before you
- 4:14Speaker 1: got into music. You know, here you are at Georgia Southern,
- 4:18Speaker 1: you know, and business management degree. You're about to go
- 4:21Speaker 1: get an m B A and but you still don't
- 4:24Speaker 1: know who you are. That's the key. So you're still
- 4:28Speaker 1: trying to find yourself. So you're still seeking out, but
- 4:32Speaker 1: you kind of know what you love. But is it
- 4:35Speaker 1: a reality? It is a it is a is a
- 4:37Speaker 1: realistic opportunity to go in that direction. Talk of walkers
- 4:41Speaker 1: through that whole process because a lot of our listeners,
- 4:44Speaker 1: a lot of people in the life are sitting on
- 4:46Speaker 1: that edge of opportunity. But fear, doubt, relatives, goods and
- 4:52Speaker 1: friends will will will will push you in the direction
- 4:54Speaker 1: of what they feel is safe. Yeah, yeah, I think
- 4:59Speaker 1: I'm you know this because you're successful. I think it's
- 5:02Speaker 1: the long game, right, Uh. The funny thing about a
- 5:06Speaker 1: dream man and that it could be the thing that
- 5:09Speaker 1: that motivates you, but it could also be the thing
- 5:12Speaker 1: that discourages you because the dream is so far out
- 5:15Speaker 1: of reach, is so different from your uh present reality,
- 5:20Speaker 1: that it can be overwhelming. I think the key is
- 5:23Speaker 1: to to have the vision of mine, but you know,
- 5:27Speaker 1: to really be faithful day to day. And so for me,
- 5:31Speaker 1: you know, I think the reason I didn't really know
- 5:34Speaker 1: what I want to do because I like it was
- 5:36Speaker 1: in my heart. But it was like, man, I have
- 5:37Speaker 1: no idea how to get there, so let me just
- 5:39Speaker 1: kind of go and do something familiar or and do
- 5:43Speaker 1: something that shows me. And I think that's where most
- 5:45Speaker 1: people land, is like let me do what's shape and
- 5:49Speaker 1: that I can kind of figure my own plan out
- 5:51Speaker 1: for But but God didn't operate like that. Man. God
- 5:54Speaker 1: is not a guy of life safety place and she's
- 5:58Speaker 1: a guy that required her faith. A faith is risky
- 6:01Speaker 1: and so and the Bedia faith. And I have to
- 6:04Speaker 1: simplify what faith is. Being a faith is that it
- 6:08Speaker 1: requires God. Like, let's cim believe, if you can do
- 6:12Speaker 1: anything in your own trip, you don't need faith to
- 6:14Speaker 1: do it. Right. Faith is anything that required like, man,
- 6:17Speaker 1: I don't know I'm gonna do this. I ain't got
- 6:20Speaker 1: no money, i ain't gonna connections, I'm just out there.
- 6:23Speaker 1: That's what faith looks like, right, right, So that's what
- 6:26Speaker 1: that's what I add up out of my life. Well,
- 6:28Speaker 1: my friend, well you're held on to the faith, which
- 6:31Speaker 1: is a firm belief, and then you drove past doubters
- 6:35Speaker 1: and then somebody encourage you. Because as I would tell people,
- 6:38Speaker 1: those mentors, I call them bumpers in life. People people
- 6:42Speaker 1: bump you, and I say, because people are bump me.
- 6:44Speaker 1: When I was about to steer left, would say, no, no, no,
- 6:46Speaker 1: what Shan. Your talents are really over here. Trust your talents,
- 6:50Speaker 1: trust the ability that God is telling you that you
- 6:53Speaker 1: can grow, that you can win with. And that's really
- 6:57Speaker 1: what this whole conversation is about that we're talking about.
- 6:59Speaker 1: But it was, but I also wanted to transition. I
- 7:01Speaker 1: want to stay on that music because especially because it
- 7:05Speaker 1: was it was three videos that I tracked this year,
- 7:08Speaker 1: it really really really allowed me to see the diverse
- 7:12Speaker 1: audience brand of Travis Green. Let's let's go with the
- 7:17Speaker 1: one that came out in April. Okay, nothing but the Blood.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Oh yeah, my man, come come, come, come, come to traffic, Travis,
- 7:29Speaker 1: come on here. What I'm not gonna do when this
- 7:31Speaker 1: show money main conversation, it's fool somebody because I don't
- 7:35Speaker 1: play no music. I don't have no music to hide,
- 7:37Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. So I better start talking
- 7:38Speaker 1: because I want you for twenty minutes. Okay, So now
- 7:42Speaker 1: where was that? Where was that video shot? At Man?
- 7:46Speaker 1: That was that Liberty University? Man Liberty and in Lynchburg Virginia.
- 7:53Speaker 1: And it was crazy, man, I mean talking. I don't know,
- 7:56Speaker 1: it's probably fifteen people. You know, students do this crazy
- 8:02Speaker 1: crazy energy and uh ton of people got saved and
- 8:05Speaker 1: got free. UM A lot with like motion on mental
- 8:11Speaker 1: um issues and a lot of the students got up
- 8:13Speaker 1: from that stuff. So it was it was crazy, man,
- 8:15Speaker 1: it was good. It was great vibes. Man. I'm gona
- 8:17Speaker 1: tell you the man watching that video, which I've watched
- 8:20Speaker 1: many times, UM, was emotional because I realized you were
- 8:24Speaker 1: touching so many different spirits and and then I made
- 8:27Speaker 1: my research on there where you was at. I just
- 8:29Speaker 1: want my audience to hear live at the University Lynchburg. Okay,
- 8:33Speaker 1: black man singing and being received. This hear the word received. Uh.
- 8:40Speaker 1: There's a lot of things I want to talking about
- 8:42Speaker 1: as a couple of videos we're about to go to break.
- 8:44Speaker 1: I'm talking about man Travis Green. I call my a innovator.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I called him the You can't see that he's already great,
- 8:50Speaker 1: but he's about to do some special things that they're
- 8:52Speaker 1: going to keep changing the game in gospel music. It's
- 8:55Speaker 1: for everybody, and he's letting it be seen through his music.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Be right, back what money may can come. Stations. See.
- 9:02Speaker 1: I have to catch myself man, because sometimes in between breaks,
- 9:05Speaker 1: you know, because we can talk to the artists or
- 9:07Speaker 1: the or the person I interviewing, and sometimes I let
- 9:10Speaker 1: a lot of great energy that I need to keep
- 9:12Speaker 1: on the air and nothing but the blood. Go to
- 9:17Speaker 1: YouTube just typing his name. You gotta watch that video
- 9:20Speaker 1: because it's a transcending video. Because when I look at
- 9:23Speaker 1: things like that, I know the state of gospel music
- 9:27Speaker 1: from a standpoint of ticket sales response, who's showing up
- 9:31Speaker 1: to hear the music, and a lot of gospel are
- 9:34Speaker 1: even big time. They play churches, large megachurches because it's
- 9:38Speaker 1: that's where they can get the audience. And to see
- 9:40Speaker 1: him in these environments where he's going in and and
- 9:44Speaker 1: and and participate with these masks audiences, I think, I
- 9:48Speaker 1: feel it's very special. That's why this year I feel
- 9:53Speaker 1: was it was his coming out party for Rushan McDonald.
- 9:55Speaker 1: I don't know about you, but for Rushan McDonald, it
- 9:58Speaker 1: was Travis Green's coming out party because it really, to me,
- 10:01Speaker 1: stabbed his diversity, stabbed his ability to appeal and really
- 10:06Speaker 1: say a true He's not changing how he sings, He's
- 10:09Speaker 1: not articulating a different way. He's doing what he believes
- 10:12Speaker 1: is the music that he's been ordained to do through
- 10:15Speaker 1: his gifts. Singing gospel this way and people is being
- 10:18Speaker 1: received by everybody. Now, let's go to my next video
- 10:22Speaker 1: that came out in August. You know, the one where
- 10:24Speaker 1: you had the Grand Torino that was red and white.
- 10:28Speaker 1: You were so low by yourself. Won't let go now
- 10:33Speaker 1: now now, now, won't let go because you because you
- 10:37Speaker 1: were testifying in and you was telling me, this is
- 10:39Speaker 1: for you, this is for you, this is for you.
- 10:42Speaker 1: You walk into the cemetery, talk to me through the steps,
- 10:45Speaker 1: and what was the significance or maybe it wasn't in
- 10:47Speaker 1: a significance of the red and white grand Torino in
- 10:52Speaker 1: Won't let Go? Yeah, I love I love subliminal messages,
- 10:58Speaker 1: so I get how know those if you pay a
- 11:01Speaker 1: pension very close attention to just uh some of the
- 11:04Speaker 1: things we do, And there was a ton of it
- 11:05Speaker 1: in that video. You know, Um, the vehicle, you know
- 11:09Speaker 1: it's an older vehicle, Yes, you know, seventies and uh
- 11:14Speaker 1: really we brought that vehicle out just to show that,
- 11:16Speaker 1: you know, older people aren't forgotten. I think so many
- 11:19Speaker 1: times we're so progressive in what we do, and we
- 11:23Speaker 1: dished what's going before us. And the truth is there
- 11:27Speaker 1: is you know, I don't I'm not on a stage
- 11:29Speaker 1: if it wasn't for Kirk Planking. You know, I'm not
- 11:32Speaker 1: out here for John, for John p Ki and for
- 11:34Speaker 1: him and and so UM. I much respect to the
- 11:37Speaker 1: times of old, Um, to the churches that I grew
- 11:40Speaker 1: up in, to my mom. That's a car that brought
- 11:42Speaker 1: to my dad, you know, my granddad and with his rope,
- 11:45Speaker 1: you know. So it's just a shout out to all
- 11:47Speaker 1: the people to say, yo, we see you, we love you,
- 11:49Speaker 1: and I forgot it. Um. You saw I had on
- 11:51Speaker 1: a band danna American flag us, I saw it. Yeah. Yeah,
- 11:58Speaker 1: that's a shout out to our military man. And I'm
- 12:00Speaker 1: you know, my dad was a military man and so
- 12:04Speaker 1: my my grandfather sold the shout to to all of them. Man.
- 12:08Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, we see you for you, um,
- 12:11Speaker 1: because so many times our veterans still under value, they're
- 12:15Speaker 1: not appreciated, So I I don't sell them love as well.
- 12:17Speaker 1: And then the graveyard, you know what significant is recorded
- 12:20Speaker 1: at home on the thirtieth anniversary of my father's passion.
- 12:24Speaker 1: I wanted to you know, I'm sent it to my
- 12:26Speaker 1: mom's was one of the first people, and also sent
- 12:28Speaker 1: it to a friend of mine who was battling cancer. Um,
- 12:31Speaker 1: it was my large gift glory. And so it's just
- 12:33Speaker 1: significant least people going to a lot and the phone
- 12:36Speaker 1: is just an encouragement to them, meant to everybody to
- 12:38Speaker 1: let them know God sees you for you, anyone, let
- 12:41Speaker 1: you go wow. I'm telling you. You know he's he
- 12:45Speaker 1: appears in the video by himself. Uh, the grand Careno
- 12:49Speaker 1: just parked him the side of the road. He walks
- 12:52Speaker 1: up Hoopsy in who was out of cassette tape? As
- 12:55Speaker 1: the initials you know when they go on it slide
- 12:58Speaker 1: it in cassette tape. When the last time you've seen
- 13:01Speaker 1: the cassette tape put into a vehicle that music comes
- 13:04Speaker 1: out of Now I love that reason. I love that
- 13:06Speaker 1: because that allows your audience to go back to that
- 13:10Speaker 1: period because what has happened with technology. Some some young
- 13:13Speaker 1: people don't even understand that that was a world like
- 13:16Speaker 1: that just ten years ago. And when I saw that,
- 13:19Speaker 1: I went wow, because you know, my life I went
- 13:21Speaker 1: from eight track two cassette to c D now, iPod now, streaming.
- 13:28Speaker 1: So I've been fortunate to live those different layers, and
- 13:31Speaker 1: so I'm very appreciative of you reaching back with a
- 13:35Speaker 1: vehicle with a sound that was very important to us
- 13:39Speaker 1: that now is being transcended by streaming. Now now that
- 13:42Speaker 1: the last video I want to talk about, Man, it
- 13:46Speaker 1: came out in September. I know you know where I'm going.
- 13:48Speaker 1: It was when my girl Stephanie Gratzinger, Um, I want
- 13:54Speaker 1: to It's called good and Loved. It was a performing
- 13:59Speaker 1: in front alive audience. This truly, to me, stamped you
- 14:02Speaker 1: as a as a true crossover talent, a diverse talent
- 14:06Speaker 1: with her own stage because you know, like I said,
- 14:08Speaker 1: the only thing she was missing, man was taking off
- 14:10Speaker 1: her shoes. That's all she If she took off her shoes,
- 14:12Speaker 1: I would have been done. I would have been done.
- 14:14Speaker 1: So first of all, how did you guys get together
- 14:17Speaker 1: to do the song good in Love? First in studio?
- 14:21Speaker 1: And then how did you guys get together do this
- 14:24Speaker 1: live performance? No, it wasn't even I mean that was it.
- 14:28Speaker 1: What you saw was that the recording you got that
- 14:32Speaker 1: was it. That was the first time saying it together?
- 14:33Speaker 1: How did that? How did that connect? How did that connect? Yeah?
- 14:37Speaker 1: So I wrote the song. I started writing it. Um,
- 14:41Speaker 1: like the chorus, I was in prayer and I just
- 14:44Speaker 1: and that's the chords just kind of came up. And
- 14:46Speaker 1: that's how a lot of songs come up for me. Right.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I was just I just felt like God just kept
- 14:50Speaker 1: sinking over good you I love. I just kept hearing that.
- 14:56Speaker 1: I was like, I want have been going on or
- 14:57Speaker 1: write more to it that and actually this is crazy.
- 15:03Speaker 1: But I was in Africa and Nigeria and where I
- 15:05Speaker 1: finished writing it. And when I I wrote more to it,
- 15:08Speaker 1: I heard her voice on it, and I'm like, Yo,
- 15:10Speaker 1: definitely would be great for this. At the time, she
- 15:14Speaker 1: had never done like a song with like that, I know,
- 15:17Speaker 1: like a Black Hearts or anything like that. Just you.
- 15:20Speaker 1: I reached out and I was like, Yo, like what
- 15:23Speaker 1: do you think about that? She said like, I'm down.
- 15:24Speaker 1: I like it. Um. That's how it happened. So our
- 15:29Speaker 1: first time singing together literally right there. We went over
- 15:32Speaker 1: it maybe a couple of times and then we recorded it. Yeah,
- 15:35Speaker 1: it's really it's really a compelled I'm talking to Travis Greeno.
- 15:38Speaker 1: We're discussing not only his latest album, which is coming
- 15:41Speaker 1: out a little Bember first as a Friday we usually
- 15:44Speaker 1: drops on Fridays, but also the record, the album we
- 15:48Speaker 1: called Broken Record. Um. We talked about music that that
- 15:51Speaker 1: has affected me over the years, especially this year, and
- 15:55Speaker 1: watching these three videos and I had to bring them
- 15:58Speaker 1: out because uh, nothing but the blood, uh you know,
- 16:03Speaker 1: uh uh you know, let go and good and love
- 16:08Speaker 1: you know to me and then just seeing the transformation.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Then then Senior on stage with Stephanie and at that
- 16:13Speaker 1: environment and looking at the audience. What just the future
- 16:16Speaker 1: of your brand and your music because it's related relatable
- 16:20Speaker 1: to me, I'm old school, Okay, it's relatable to a
- 16:24Speaker 1: diverse audience. Your your bands one hundred African American as
- 16:27Speaker 1: what I can see, So what's what is the future
- 16:30Speaker 1: of your brain? Man? Well absolutely aslually. No one in
- 16:36Speaker 1: my bandage African American. Okay. So they they're black, you know,
- 16:41Speaker 1: some of them are black, but all of them are
- 16:43Speaker 1: in the naza on one is okay, okay, okay, okay, okay,
- 16:48Speaker 1: you got me on the color, You got me on
- 16:49Speaker 1: the color. Okay. Drummers from Baltimore, but my band players
- 16:54Speaker 1: Jamaican people, Plantation one good our plantation and I'm the
- 16:58Speaker 1: one is uh from the Philippines, so pretty divergent. Uh
- 17:03Speaker 1: group of people. They love black, but they from all
- 17:05Speaker 1: over the world. Well, I think what I think it
- 17:09Speaker 1: helps you in your sound and your whole sound. It's
- 17:13Speaker 1: not restricted, it's very open kind of you know. It's
- 17:16Speaker 1: almost gives to me that Bob Marley type field that
- 17:20Speaker 1: Bob Marley when he came, you know, and then he
- 17:22Speaker 1: just blew up and it became so that version because
- 17:24Speaker 1: that music was so international. And I'm just saying, man
