- 0:00Welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio, a program for teens and almost
- 0:04teens to better understand that the gospel of Jesus Christ is relevant in their
- 0:08lives, and it's a place where your questions about faith and religion can be answered.
- 0:13And now, here's your host, Deacon Al.
- 0:16Good evening, and welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 0:19I am Deacon Al Lundy, a permanent deacon of the Peoria Diocese,
- 0:23welcoming you, and we're going to be talking about the readings from this weekend's Mass.
- 0:29It is the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
- 0:32John, happy Independence Day. Happy Fourth of July. Do you enjoy it?
- 0:37Take the kids out for the fireworks. That's always fun.
- 0:40Haven't seen fireworks in a while. Been busy with Mom on Fourth of July,
- 0:46and we usually have a little cookout at her apartment.
- 0:49And then we watch the Boston Pops orchestra on television and watch the fireworks
- 0:55in Boston and New York and those kind of places.
- 0:58And that way we can get to bed before midnight.
- 1:01And it's always nice. But I loved going to the park for years.
- 1:07We'd go to one of the parks in town to watch the fireworks.
- 1:10Absolutely love doing that and love fireworks shows.
- 1:13And I asked my wife, you know, since mom has now passed and we have the evening and it's 4th of July.
- 1:20Let's go watch the fireworks. And she gave me an enthusiastic, do we have to?
- 1:27She's gotten so used to not going and not having the bugs, the mosquitoes, the crowds.
- 1:33You know, getting there is not bad. It's getting out. You know,
- 1:37how is it that we can get so many cars into a field that fast and can't get them out for hours?
- 1:44Just amazes me, especially some people leave before the big,
- 1:47why would you go to a fireworks show and leave before the big finale?
- 1:51Yeah. It does kind of ruin the whole thing. As you're driving out,
- 1:54you hear all these extra explosions going off and you see the lights.
- 1:57You think, what happened? I thought they were done.
- 1:59Or was it really worth leaving early just to miss all that?
- 2:03But I wanted to go, but I got outvoted. By the way, for those of you who are
- 2:06not married or soon to be married, a one-to-one vote means you have been outvoted.
- 2:11So we didn't go to the park, but we did watch the Boston Pops.
- 2:16I always love their music and love to watch everything that goes on at the White
- 2:20House with their concert and their shows.
- 2:23So I hope everyone who's listening had a good Fourth of July.
- 2:27And keep our country in your prayers. You know, we forget sometimes that our
- 2:33freedoms and the faiths, the faith of our Judeo-Christian religions are very closely tied.
- 2:40You know, if we didn't have that faith, we wouldn't have the freedoms that we have today.
- 2:45And if we didn't have those freedoms, we probably wouldn't have the faiths that we have today.
- 2:50Because in a lot of countries, Christianity especially, has been tremendously repressed.
- 2:56You know, there are countries where if you are clergy, you cannot wear signs
- 3:01of your clerical role in public. You can be arrested for that.
- 3:07Nuns can't wear their habits. You can't wear a crucifix in public or even a
- 3:12cross without being arrested, prosecuted.
- 3:17It's incredible that our world has come to that. So please, pray for our country,
- 3:22pray for our freedoms, pray for the freedom of our faith that we are allowed
- 3:27to continue to exercise it in the public arena.
- 3:31Because with all the problems we have in the world today, we'd have far fewer
- 3:35if we had more Christians.
- 3:37I firmly believe that. Not everyone does. That's okay. Not everyone's right.
- 3:43So just pray for our country. This is a difficult time.
- 3:47I think it's more difficult than anything I've faced in my nearly 70 years.
- 3:53So just keep that in mind as you celebrate our freedoms that our faith,
- 3:58our Christian faith is part of those freedoms.
- 4:01Really important to understand. Other than that, we finished closing up mom's
- 4:05apartment. It's taken us a month.
- 4:08It's amazing how much we accumulate in a lifetime.
- 4:11And then to try and take someone else's life and fit it into your home and your
- 4:18things in your life, it's really difficult.
- 4:21And we're not just talking about physical space.
- 4:24It's about having to let go of things that you know were emotionally,
- 4:30spiritually important to the other person, that you just, you can't keep everything
- 4:34of someone else's house and incorporate it into your own.
- 4:37And I have four brothers, and they're just a little bit younger than me,
- 4:42and they have as much stuff accumulated in their lives as I have.
- 4:47And between the five of us, we were able to take just a portion of what was mom's stuff.
- 4:55And I know there are things that she really hoped we would hang on to,
- 4:58you know, furniture pieces and
- 4:59things, that I've been accumulating my own furniture for over 40 years.
- 5:04So to find room for other people's furniture among that, it's hard to do.
- 5:08And it just broke my heart on some things to have to say no to them.
- 5:12And to see them go. But the good news is we were able to help a lot of charities in town.
- 5:18We not only gave a number of mom's furniture and some of her jewelry and other
- 5:23things to various charities to be able to use to raise money for their ministries,
- 5:29but we also, as part of mom's funeral,
- 5:32asked for donations for certain charities.
- 5:34I know we were able to give some money in her name to the radio station here, to our stations.
- 5:40We raised money for my home parish, the parish that was my mother's home parish, and also for St.
- 5:47Vincent de Paul, which I think does an amazing job in their ministries here in town.
- 5:53And maybe you have a St. Vincent de Paul in your area. I know there's one in Peoria.
- 5:57I don't know some of the other towns we reach. I don't know if they have a St.
- 6:01Vincent de Paul society.
- 6:02But here they do a tremendous amount of work feeding and clothing.
- 6:07Those who are less fortunate, maybe they're in just a difficult moment in their
- 6:11life and can't afford those things, and they're able to help out hundreds of families every week.
- 6:17And so we were very happy to be able to give a good, strong contribution to
- 6:21continue the ministries of St. Vincent de Paul.
- 6:24And some of the monies that went to the church are going towards maintenance and building needs.
- 6:30So she lived a good life, and she left a great heritage behind of help and service to others.
- 6:38And so rest in peace, Mom, and good luck to everyone that we were able to help
- 6:43out. Oh, I got to share a story with you, John. This is neat.
- 6:48So people forget sometimes that the Catholic faith just isn't about Mass.
- 6:53I mean, Mass is a huge part of who we are and why we believe what we believe.
- 6:59But Christ left us a church of love more than anything else.
- 7:03Everybody thinks of the Catholic faith as a church of works,
- 7:07but it's the wrong kind of works that they're thinking of, or they think of it as a church of rules.
- 7:14And certainly we have rules, but baseball has rules. I mean,
- 7:17it would be chaos without them. The universe has rules, exactly.
- 7:21But that's not what we're all about. Really, it's a church of love.
- 7:25It's all about loving God and loving neighbor.
- 7:27And I have a story of a great example of the Catholic church at work.
- 7:33We bought a parishioner a car.
- 7:36We have a parishioner, lovely young lady, very active in the parish,
- 7:42has been active for decades,
- 7:44started her service to the church when she was just a little girl,
- 7:47when her mother was active in ministry in the church as a sacristan,
- 7:52and she would come in as just a child and help her mom.
- 7:55And then she became a sacristan herself at one of our churches.
- 7:59A hardworking young woman, took care of her mother in her old age.
- 8:04Just an amazing devotion to Christ. But she was driving a death trap.
- 8:09I mean, she had a car that she's been driving for well over 10 years that had no air conditioning.
- 8:16The last three years she's been driving it, no air conditioning,
- 8:19no heating, moonroof leaked, windshield leaked.
- 8:23They kept the windshield and the moonroof from leaking with packing tape.
- 8:26I mean, this thing was a rolling death trap. To add to that,
- 8:30the frame was completely rusted through.
- 8:32Went for an oil change. They wouldn't even put it on the hoist.
- 8:35They said it was unsafe to lift. And she's been driving this car in this condition for years.
- 8:41And once some of her parishioners found out about this, they pitched in,
- 8:46and I mean, dozens of people helped with this.
- 8:49Dozens of people bought her a car, paid for the licensing and the registration,
- 8:54paid for six months of car insurance paid for over $2,000 in mechanical repairs
- 9:01on the new car so what she got handed was a beautiful SUV four wheel drive SUV leather interior.
- 9:11It's one of those cars you talk to and it does stuff. You know,
- 9:13it's got the voice command in it.
- 9:15It's 2014. It's got some mileage on it, but the engine purrs like a kitten.
- 9:21There's not even a dent on it. It's just a beautiful car.
- 9:25And this was all done through the generosity of the parishioners.
- 9:29And there are people who will look at that and say, the Catholic Church supports
- 9:33socialism. This isn't socialism.
- 9:36Socialism is when the government tells you, help your neighbor.
- 9:39And here's how much you're going to do for them, right?
- 9:43Where nobody made these people do this. They came together and said,
- 9:48we have a parishioner in need.
- 9:51There's just basic things you need in life, like transportation, right?
- 9:56And they got together and they did the right thing. They raised the money, found the car.
- 10:02I mean, how often do you hear of a parish getting together and buying,
- 10:06and not just the Catholic parish, any parish, looking at their congregation
- 10:11and say, here's someone in real need, let's do something about it.
- 10:15And they bought this woman a car. I was just floored.
- 10:18Just the generosity and the love that these two parishes showed to make this
- 10:23happen just absolutely blew me away.
- 10:25So before you start thinking about the Catholic Church in negative terms,
- 10:29really think about what they do and how they do it.
- 10:32To me, it's incredibly impressive.
- 10:36We're at your parish. I know at my parish, John, I know at the parish you belong
- 10:40to, we're starting to get into a season for a course called OCIA.
- 10:46It used to be called RCIA.
- 10:48Now it's called OCIA. And in most parishes, this is going to be starting in
- 10:51about a month to a month and a half.
- 10:53And this is a course, a weekly course that teaches is the doctrines and the
- 10:58dogmas of the Catholic faith, the catechism.
- 11:02In order, for the most part, for these people who wish to convert into the Catholic faith,
- 11:08by informing them first of what they're getting into. So they know exactly why
- 11:13we say the creed, why we say the prayers we pray, why Mass includes the things that Mass includes,
- 11:18why we have seven sacraments when most Christian religions rather have two,
- 11:24maybe three, we have seven.
- 11:26What's the difference? Where does this come from? Why do we do it?
- 11:29It's all explained in OCIA, the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults.
- 11:34If you're in a mixed marriage, if you are a non-Catholic married to a Catholic,
- 11:39and you have children, and you've decided to raise those children Catholic because
- 11:44you probably, in the case of a mixed marriage,
- 11:46you agreed at the point of the marriage not to interfere with your children being raised Catholic.
- 11:52So you have Catholic children, but you're not Catholic. You're leaving the parenting,
- 11:58in the raising of the faith, the most important thing a parent can do is to
- 12:02bring their children into a relationship with God, and you're saying,
- 12:06I can't be any part of that because I don't know, right?
- 12:10So you leave that work to the other parent, the Catholic parent,
- 12:13to do that themselves. Well, that's not what parenting is about.
- 12:16Parenting is a partnership, an equal partnership.
- 12:20And you can't share what you don't have. So if you're in a Catholic marriage,
- 12:26married to a Catholic, and you're not Catholic, I want to strongly suggest you
- 12:30attend OCIA, not in order for you to convert,
- 12:34but just for you to know what faith your children are being raised in.
- 12:39So when they have a question, it's go talk to your mom about that or go talk to your dad about that.
- 12:44You can answer in a Catholic way, even without being Catholic,
- 12:49just so that you can be a more active participant in the parenting.
- 12:54Another good reason to go to OCIA, even if you're not going to convert,
- 12:58is just being able to understand what is important to your spouse and why they
- 13:06believe what they believe.
- 13:08If you're going to be around Catholicism or in Catholicism, it helps to understand it.
- 13:14If you've been away from the church for a long time, another good reason to
- 13:17come to OCIA because maybe your catechism, your Christian learning ended in eighth grade.
- 13:23You know, you got confirmed and that was it.
- 13:26Adios. I'm fully Catholic. Goodbye. And whether you stayed in active attending
- 13:31church or not, if that's when your catechism ended,
- 13:34you need to come back to your parish and get some education because there's
- 13:39far more to the Catholic Church and the Catholic faith than you could have possibly
- 13:44covered in the few years that you went to catechism.
- 13:48So, just some things to think about. We're all over Central and Northern Illinois
- 13:53and trying to grow even further.
- 13:55In fact, now we broadcast all the way into Wisconsin.
- 13:57But we would love for you to not only listen to the programs,
- 14:02but help support us so that we can continue to grow. So if you go to our website
- 14:06at catholicspiritradio.com or .org, either one will get you there.
- 14:10There's a donate button on that first page. Just click on the donate button.
- 14:13It'll walk you through the easy steps to send in a one-time donation,
- 14:17or you can set it up as a monthly.
- 14:19I really, really encourage that because I know in the case of my family,
- 14:24we've been doing monthly donations for years now.
- 14:27It helps our family budget, and it helps the radio station's budget.
- 14:31John and the group always love to know a month ahead of time how much money
- 14:35they're going to be able to spend, what bills can get paid, what equipment can get purchased.
- 14:39So not to knock a nice one-time donation, that's certainly helpful,
- 14:44but monthly donations are really, really helpful to us.
- 14:48And in July, if you donate on Tuesdays, it gets doubled.
- 14:53So please keep that in mind this month. So we still have a few Tuesdays left.
- 14:57So if you get online or you can come into the radio station at 108 Boykin's
- 15:02Place in Normal and drop off your donation.
- 15:05Either way, we have some donors who will double that donation.
- 15:09So that's a great thing to do. So Tuesday's only a couple days away.
- 15:13As we come into this Tuesday, please get online, click the donate button and send in your donation.
- 15:19Even if it's monthly, they're going to look at the annual amount and match that
- 15:23as soon as you've made all your payments.
- 15:26So this is a great way to help support Catholic Spirit Radio and let us keep
- 15:31spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, inviting more and more people into the
- 15:36truth of the Catholic faith, and do some awesome programming.
- 15:40We've got programs from EWTN and other Catholic networks as well as locally produced.
- 15:45We're on the air 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and you can find apologetics,
- 15:51you can find commentary,
- 15:52you can find news from a Catholic viewpoint, you can get tips on raising your
- 15:56children, you can get tips on your married life and your personal life.
- 16:02You can get all sorts of great information from Catholic Spirit Radio,
- 16:04along with the rosary every day, and I say news and commentary.
- 16:10So please continue to support our efforts. If you're already supporting Catholic
- 16:14Spirit Radio, thank you very much.
- 16:16Please take a good look at what you might be able to do in addition.
- 16:19Besides donations, we could use some physical help. We could use some help at the station.
- 16:24We have special events that we need people to help coordinate,
- 16:28some really wonderful events that you can go on tours and things with other listeners.
- 16:32We just need some help around the station, and we'd love to have your help with that.
- 16:36So if you feel God's calling you to do something more.
- 16:40It might be just a new use of your resources, your time, your talents to help us spread the gospel.
- 16:46And you can find out how to do that on our website as well. So,
- 16:50please take advantage of that.
- 16:52So, let's get into our readings for this weekend, the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
- 16:57Our first reading comes from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
- 17:03Our second reading comes from
- 17:05Paul to the Galatians, and then our gospel is from the gospel of Luke.
- 17:10So, remember, ordinary time is a time of growth. It's a time where we strengthen
- 17:14our faith, where we prepare ourselves for the really high holidays,
- 17:20the solemnities, the feasts of our Catholic faith.
- 17:23So, these are to get us ready for the Nativity, for the coming of Christ in
- 17:28the Nativity, and also for Easter, and the second coming of Christ,
- 17:33as well as the resurrection.
- 17:33So, 14th Sunday of Ordinary Time, Prophet Isaiah says, Thus says the Lord,
- 17:41Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad because of her, and all of you who love her,
- 17:45exalt, exalt with her, all you who are mourning over her.
- 17:49O that you may suck fully on the milk of her comfort, that you may nurse with
- 17:53delight at her abundant breasts.
- 17:55For thus says the Lord, Lo, I will spread prosperity over Jerusalem like a river,
- 18:00and the wealth of the nation's life and overflowing torrent.
- 18:04As nurslings, you shall be carried in her arms and fondled in her lap.
- 18:08As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.
- 18:12Jerusalem, you shall find your comfort. When you see this, your heart shall
- 18:16rejoice and your bodies flourish like the grass.
- 18:19The Lord's power shall be known to his servants. The word of the Lord.
- 18:23So this is Isaiah not only telling the Jews who are in exile,
- 18:28don't worry about it, you're coming home.
- 18:30There's going to be a time where Jerusalem will be rebuilt, and you will come back and rejoice.
- 18:35But there's a deeper meaning to this in that the new Jerusalem,
- 18:39the new kingdom, is the kingdom of heaven, where God dwells.
- 18:43And we need to rejoice over that, that God who loves us has a home waiting for
- 18:48us. The home just isn't in heaven.
- 18:51Where can you find God? Where can you find Christ any day of the week?
- 18:56At church, at the Mass, even if not in the Mass, in adoration, in the tabernacle.
- 19:02Christ is present for us. And we should be joyous over that.
- 19:06And if we're joyous over it, we should be doing it more often. We should be drawn to it.
- 19:11When was the last time you attended adoration?
- 19:14For some people, they can say, well, that was just last week.
- 19:17And for some people, they might be able to say, well, that was yesterday.
- 19:20But I'll bet there's a good number of us who can say, it's been a year,
- 19:24or maybe it's been multiple years.
- 19:27You know, Christ waits for us at the church, in the tabernacle,
- 19:32and we're very fortunate to be able to have that, to be able to see Christ any
- 19:37day, to receive Christ in the Eucharist every day of the week.
- 19:42So, bear that in mind, that God does this for our joy, not for His adoration, for our joy.
- 19:51We go to adore Christ because it's good for us, not because Christ gets anything extra out of it.
- 19:59He's already God. He has everything, right?
- 20:02There's nothing we can do to make God happy.
- 20:05God is joy. God is love.
- 20:08And he offers himself to us to share in that.
- 20:11And so often we say, well, maybe next week, maybe next month,
- 20:17or I really don't need that. How can you say you don't need that?
- 20:21You're being offered the very best food on earth, the body of Christ,
- 20:27given to us for our salvation.
- 20:30And we tend to put it away because we'll have to work that day.
- 20:33We put it away because, well, we've got traveling softball or traveling football or traveling soccer.
- 20:40We hear a lot of that. Wanted to be there, but, well, we had a traveling soccer game.
- 20:44I'm sure when the time comes for our judgment, that Jesus isn't going to look
- 20:51at the book and say, wow, nice job. You made every soccer game. Good for you.
- 20:56I really don't think that's going to come into play.
- 20:59So, just something to keep in mind. Our second reading, a very short one,
- 21:03Paul to the Galatians, where he writes, brothers and sisters,
- 21:06may I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,
- 21:10through which the world has been crucified to me.
- 21:12And to me and I to the world.
- 21:15For neither does circumcision mean anything, nor does uncircumcision, but only a new creation.
- 21:21Peace and mercy be to all who follow this rule and to the Israel of God.
- 21:27From now on, let no one make troubles for me, for I bear the marks of Jesus on my body.
- 21:33The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters. Amen.
- 21:38The word of the Lord. So what Paul's saying is, No matter what we do,
- 21:44everything we have is because of Christ.
- 21:48It's not about boasting about what Paul's accomplished, and Paul accomplished
- 21:51a lot. But without Christ, it doesn't matter.
- 21:55The only thing that matters is our relationship with God.
- 22:00Circumcision, which in the Jewish faith was a sign of belonging to the Jewish
- 22:06tribe, to the Jewish nation, but that was replaced with baptism.
- 22:11And the difference is one made you a member of the nation of Judaism.
- 22:15The other one makes you a relation, a family member with Christ.
- 22:21Huge difference. Huge difference. And that's why one replaces the other,
- 22:26because one is so much more important.
- 22:28It's your relationship with God that matters and nothing else.
- 22:33Any fame you have on earth is limited.
- 22:35Any wealth you have on earth is limited.
- 22:38Without a relationship with God, there is nothing waiting for us beyond that.
- 22:43And there's nothing we can do that's greater than that.
- 22:47Our gospel reading is from the Gospel of Luke.
- 22:50At that time, the Lord appointed 72 others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs
- 22:55to every town and place he intended to visit.
- 22:58He said to them, the harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few.
- 23:02So ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.
- 23:07Go on your way. Behold, I'm sending you like lambs among wolves.
- 23:11Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals, and greet no one along the way.
- 23:17And to whatever house you enter, first say, Peace to this household.
- 23:21If it's a peaceful person who lives there, your peace will rest on him.
- 23:25But if not, it will return to you.
- 23:28Stay in the same house and eat and drink what's offered to you,
- 23:31for the laborer deserves his payment. But do not move from one house to another.
- 23:36Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you.
- 23:40Cure the sick in it and say to them, The kingdom of God is at hand for you.
- 23:46Whatever town you enter, if they do not receive you, go into the streets and
- 23:51save the dust of this town that clings to our feet, even that we shake off against you.
- 23:56You know this, the kingdom of God is at hand. I tell you, it will be more tolerable
- 24:01for Sodom on that day than for that town.
- 24:04The seventy-two returned rejoicing,
- 24:07saying, Lord, even demons are subject to us because of your name.
- 24:11Jesus said, I have observed Satan falling like lightning from the sky.
- 24:15Behold, I've given you the power to tread upon serpents and scorpions,
- 24:19and upon the whole force of the enemy, and nothing will harm you.
- 24:23Nonetheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you,
- 24:27but rejoice because your names are written in heaven. The gospel of the Lord.
- 24:31So again, Jesus tells them what Paul was telling the Galatians,
- 24:35it's not your greatness that matters.
- 24:38It's the fact that you do great things in the name of Christ.
- 24:42It's Christ that matters.
- 24:44It's the fact that you're working towards an eternal life, not the work you do in your mortal life.
- 24:54I love the part that he's sending them out.
- 24:57He tells them right away, I'm sending you out like lambs among wolves.
- 25:01You're going to be persecuted as a Christian.
- 25:03It's going to happen because the world doesn't think like we think.
- 25:08The world is very self-centered, very egotistic. It wants what pleases it. not what pleases God.
- 25:15So, be prepared that being a Christian is rough, but also understand that anything
- 25:21of value is going to need to be earned. It's not just given to you.
- 25:26So, we need as Christians to go out and earn our keep as Christians.
- 25:31We need to show others who we are and what we are.
- 25:34And in doing so, that's the best evangelism you can do.
- 25:37You might not be a big corner and shout out Scripture.
- 25:43That's not what being a Christian is.
- 25:45You will bring more people to the faith just by being a good person,
- 25:50just by taking the lessons that Christ taught us in the few years that He was
- 25:53with us, and using the strength of the graces He gives us to the sacrament to
- 25:58just be good to other people.
- 26:00And that alone will bring others to our Catholic faith.
- 26:05May Almighty God bless you, protect you from all evil, and bring you to everlasting
- 26:10life. Have a wonderful week. God bless.
