- 1:49Speaker 1: I'm so happy, the interviewer. I'm so happy to see
- 1:51Speaker 1: this beautiful smile, Michael Hyatt. Just keep smiling. Smile for
- 1:59Speaker 1: this interview, because I'm never gonna see you smile this
- 2:03Speaker 1: much in any of the roles that you do. But
- 2:05Speaker 1: you're doing so brilliantly, and you have this beautiful smile.
- 2:08Speaker 1: First of all, your your beautiful woman personality wise and
- 2:11Speaker 1: things you've done in your career. Let's let's let's talk
- 2:14Speaker 1: about let's get started. Because of I'm a big advocate
- 2:17Speaker 1: of HBCUs and Howard Universities right there, it's kind of
- 2:22Speaker 1: like the Harvard University of HBCUs. Tell me why you
- 2:26Speaker 1: went there and walk away with some of your experience,
- 2:28Speaker 1: because we all know the Vice President of the the United
- 2:30Speaker 1: States is on Howard graduate. Talk about that experience, Michael, Um,
- 2:35Speaker 1: Howard was, in hindsight, a tremendous experience. Um. You know,
- 2:44Speaker 1: I I, my mom went went to Howard University, and
- 2:49Speaker 1: I I was not a good student in high school
- 2:54Speaker 1: at all. I was you know, I was a D
- 2:57Speaker 1: average at best, and I barely got out of high school.
- 3:01Speaker 1: And so it was it was, it was it was
- 3:08Speaker 1: my mother's legacy that really got me into Howard. And
- 3:12Speaker 1: I didn't really appreciate it until because I just wasn't
- 3:17Speaker 1: thinking like that. I was a silly teenager. Um. And
- 3:21Speaker 1: when I got there, the then dean of the school
- 3:25Speaker 1: said to me, look, let's just be real. You are
- 3:28Speaker 1: here because of your mother, but you would stay here
- 3:31Speaker 1: because of you, So you need to make a decision.
- 3:35Speaker 1: And I walked into the theater in ira Aldridge Theater
- 3:39Speaker 1: at Howard and immediately the energy of the space just
- 3:46Speaker 1: took me over and I knew that this is where
- 3:50Speaker 1: I belonged, and my world, my consciousness changed immediately. Um,
- 3:58Speaker 1: I had found myself, I found my calling. I had
- 4:01Speaker 1: found where I belonged. And you know it was it
- 4:05Speaker 1: was tough academically just for me to get a grip
- 4:10Speaker 1: and catch a clue about what was needed for me
- 4:13Speaker 1: from me, but I will tell you, you know. And
- 4:18Speaker 1: and then I I joined society, deal with society, divine intelligence,
- 4:25Speaker 1: versatile artists and just had so many wonderful experiences as
- 4:31Speaker 1: an African woman surrounded by African people. I did not
- 4:37Speaker 1: understand its depth in my spirit until I went to
- 4:42Speaker 1: graduate school at n y U, which is a completely experience, um,
- 4:50Speaker 1: you know or whatever. And it was when I showed
- 4:54Speaker 1: up there that I realized just how much I got
- 5:00Speaker 1: from Howard University. And I have a son who's ten.
- 5:05Speaker 1: He's going to an HBCU may not be Howard, I
- 5:08Speaker 1: don't know whatever he do he because I understand how
- 5:14Speaker 1: important it is for my African man son to be
- 5:17Speaker 1: surrounded by himself, um, to live and swim in that power,
- 5:24Speaker 1: that greatness before he sets out into the world. It
- 5:29Speaker 1: was a tremendous difference and it has served me throughout
- 5:32Speaker 1: my life. And then which is you've lived and living
- 5:36Speaker 1: a beautiful life before we get to f X. You
- 5:38Speaker 1: know when when when we talk about gifts, because I
- 5:41Speaker 1: talked about that at the top, you know, and you said, Richard,
- 5:44Speaker 1: I went to college and basically got to college because
- 5:46Speaker 1: my mom provided with an opportunity. But I got there
- 5:48Speaker 1: it was either sink or swim, and singer swim tied
- 5:50Speaker 1: to my efforts. But your talents. When did you really
- 5:55Speaker 1: realize that this this acting? And then in the college,
- 5:59Speaker 1: but then when left college when it really started thinking
- 6:02Speaker 1: and this is what I want to do for the
- 6:04Speaker 1: rest of my life. Um. I you know, I am
- 6:12Speaker 1: a late bloomer. I have been surrounded by the art
- 6:20Speaker 1: my whole life. My father was an actor in Jamaica
- 6:23Speaker 1: and in England, and my mother is a museum director.
- 6:28Speaker 1: So I was surrounded by artists that just a what
- 6:31Speaker 1: it was, just an is in my life. And you know,
- 6:36Speaker 1: then I, you know, went to Howard and I was
- 6:39Speaker 1: in this world and then when I finished Howard, it
- 6:44Speaker 1: was just it just was I didn't know what else
- 6:50Speaker 1: to do. I mean, I knew how to survive, because
- 6:52Speaker 1: every artist needs to know how to survive, but it
- 6:55Speaker 1: was just a clear understanding from my my it was
- 7:01Speaker 1: and knowing it was a calling. I knew that it was,
- 7:04Speaker 1: but I didn't know how, And I don't know that
- 7:09Speaker 1: any artist knows the how. And I always tell people
- 7:14Speaker 1: you don't need to know how. You don't need to
- 7:16Speaker 1: know when how cool. You just need to say yes
- 7:22Speaker 1: to whatever it is your truth is, and by saying
- 7:27Speaker 1: yes you it will flow through you. That is how
- 7:31Speaker 1: I have found. I didn't calculate any of this. I
- 7:35Speaker 1: knew that I would be successful, but the how I
- 7:39Speaker 1: had no idea, or the when I had no idea.
- 7:42Speaker 1: And it has been a roller coaster, there's no doubt
- 7:45Speaker 1: about it. I have learned as I have gone and off,
- 7:47Speaker 1: and I have learned the demons within myself that I
- 7:53Speaker 1: had to heal in order from me to embrace the
- 7:57Speaker 1: success that was willingly waiting for me. So it's been
- 8:02Speaker 1: a journey emotionally, spiritually, and artistically from me to get
- 8:07Speaker 1: to where I am. But I always knew in my
- 8:10Speaker 1: being where I belonged. Wow. And when we look at
- 8:15Speaker 1: the crew, I'm talking to Michael Hyatt, she star one
- 8:17Speaker 1: of the one of the many stars of the series.
- 8:20Speaker 1: UH Snowfaller's or facts that you can watch every Wednesday,
- 8:23Speaker 1: ten pm. Your character, real estate agent, getting you know
- 8:30Speaker 1: your son, drug dealing, you know your husband? Or community activists. Um,
- 8:37Speaker 1: we said the seving. I know l A really well.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I lived in l A fifteen years. So you say
- 8:44Speaker 1: south Central, I knew exactly what you're talking about. When
- 8:46Speaker 1: you say Lamert Park, I knew exactly what you're talking about.
- 8:49Speaker 1: So the story lines made sense to me and often
- 8:53Speaker 1: times sad to me, because I knew exactly all those
- 8:56Speaker 1: communities were affected by crack and this and they it
- 9:00Speaker 1: was basically a true storyline where the government was selling
- 9:03Speaker 1: drugs that they sold in the black community in this
- 9:06Speaker 1: case South Central, Watts and the Jungle and used that
- 9:11Speaker 1: to buy fund and Nickaragren war efforts. And I didn't care.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Now let's talk about your character and and build and
- 9:22Speaker 1: why is it important? Because this whole serious bore off
- 9:25Speaker 1: the backs of John Singleton, who was no longer with us.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Let's talk about your relationship with John singletons, how you
- 9:30Speaker 1: were brought into the project, and then let's talk about
- 9:32Speaker 1: the growth of your characters the first three seasons leading
- 9:35Speaker 1: into the fourth season. Um, the job came as a
- 9:41Speaker 1: simple audition. It's how I've gotten most of the work
- 9:45Speaker 1: that I've done. It was, you know, my manager said,
- 9:48Speaker 1: you know, there's something coming along my table, and I
- 9:51Speaker 1: think you should look into it. So I auditioned. I
- 9:54Speaker 1: had no I mean, I heard that John was was
- 9:59Speaker 1: associated with it, but you know, I didn't know John
- 10:01Speaker 1: Singleton at the time. I certainly was a fan of
- 10:04Speaker 1: so many people are, but that in and of itself,
- 10:07Speaker 1: you know, it was a job. I was unemployed and
- 10:09Speaker 1: I was looking for a job. You know, I take
- 10:12Speaker 1: the romance out of it because I think sometimes the
- 10:16Speaker 1: romance creates a separation between the artist and the work.
- 10:22Speaker 1: So I try my best when I'm telling my story
- 10:26Speaker 1: to take all the fluff out of it so that
- 10:28Speaker 1: it is recognizable to my fellow artists, and it it
- 10:34Speaker 1: is perceived as attainable because it absolutely is. Um. So
- 10:40Speaker 1: I what once I got the job, I I needed
- 10:44Speaker 1: to understand because I had been a part of a
- 10:50Speaker 1: story like this before, you know, being the wire. I
- 10:53Speaker 1: wanted to have an understanding of where is this going? UM.
- 10:56Speaker 1: And John was so wonderful and he came into my
- 11:01Speaker 1: trailer and sat me down and said, Okay, this is
- 11:04Speaker 1: the arc of her story. We don't know the new
- 11:06Speaker 1: you know the details. You know, we flitch out with
- 11:08Speaker 1: flush out with every seat with every episode. UM, but
- 11:11Speaker 1: this is the arc. And once I understood, once I
- 11:15Speaker 1: understood that this woman represented his own life, the women
- 11:24Speaker 1: in his life, various women in his own life, in
- 11:27Speaker 1: his own world, that I felt more comfortable because I
- 11:33Speaker 1: know that I'm connecting to somebody that many people will
- 11:38Speaker 1: understand and and will will recognize and identify with. That
- 11:43Speaker 1: was important to me. UM. So you know, once once
- 11:49Speaker 1: John laid it out, I was on board. And and
- 11:53Speaker 1: I mean this, this role Sissy speaks to every mother.
- 11:59Speaker 1: This is the sperience, whether whether the issue is UH.
- 12:04Speaker 1: You know that your son is dealing you know, crack
- 12:07Speaker 1: or cocaine. Those are just symptoms, Those are just side things.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Really we're dealing with the struggle of UM, the evolution
- 12:20Speaker 1: of your child, you know, the transition from childhood to manhood,
- 12:26Speaker 1: the transition from you setting his path to him taking
- 12:34Speaker 1: the reins and creating his own path. And who hasn't
- 12:38Speaker 1: fallen and needed to get up in whatever way, and
- 12:42Speaker 1: and the journey of how that works. And then the
- 12:45Speaker 1: journey of the woman herself. Who is she outside of
- 12:51Speaker 1: being this young man's mother? Now he is at an
- 12:57Speaker 1: age you know he once you send them off to college?
- 13:02Speaker 1: The empty nest syndrome, the who am I outside of
- 13:06Speaker 1: being the mother? And then the journey of of of
- 13:10Speaker 1: of how do you navigate continuing to because you don't
- 13:14Speaker 1: throw them away? Right? How do you navigate continuing to
- 13:17Speaker 1: hold onto them but needing to let them go? And
- 13:21Speaker 1: then the journey of a relationship with with the men
- 13:26Speaker 1: that you have known since you were a young child,
- 13:29Speaker 1: a young teenager. Uh, and and then that relationship falls
- 13:34Speaker 1: apart and then it comes back together again. All of
- 13:37Speaker 1: these beautiful things are our journeys that every woman can
- 13:43Speaker 1: relate to. And Uh, it's tough, it's it's it's it's
- 13:49Speaker 1: hard to do these scenes a lot of times. But
- 13:53Speaker 1: I know that I'm speaking to every aspect of my
- 13:55Speaker 1: womanhood and many aspects of my sister's woman. So it's
- 14:01Speaker 1: a journey that I welcome. It's finally here, the season
- 14:04Speaker 1: of celebration. And no matter how you celebrate with family
- 14:08Speaker 1: and friends, whether you're preparing for Reis magos or Karamu
- 14:11Speaker 1: lighting the Manura, are going to midnight mass, Coals has
- 14:15Speaker 1: just what you need to make those traditions special. Plus
- 14:19Speaker 1: you'll find gifts for all your loved ones. Send warm
- 14:22Speaker 1: wishes with cozy fleeces, sweaters, loungeware, blankets and throws. Support
- 14:26Speaker 1: minority owned or founded brands by giving gifts from Human
- 14:30Speaker 1: Nation and shame moisture, or treat them to everyone's favorite
- 14:33Speaker 1: active wear from top brands like Nike, Adidas, and under Armour.
- 14:38Speaker 1: And in the spirit of giving, Coals Cares is donating
- 14:41Speaker 1: eight million dollars to local nonprofits nationwide committed to the
- 14:45Speaker 1: health and well being of our communities. No matter how
- 14:48Speaker 1: you celebrate, when you shop at Coals, you're right where
- 14:51Speaker 1: you belong. So this season, give with all your heart
- 14:55Speaker 1: with great gifts from Coals or Coals dot Com. And
- 14:58Speaker 1: we're live here out the Perez family home, just waiting
- 15:02Speaker 1: for the and there they go, almost on time. This morning,
- 15:05Speaker 1: Mom is coming out the front door, strong with a
- 15:08Speaker 1: double arm kid carry. Looks like Dad has the bags,
- 15:11Speaker 1: daughter is bringing up the rear. Oh, but the diaper
- 15:14Speaker 1: bag wasn't closed. Diapers and toys are everywhere. But mom
- 15:20Speaker 1: has just nailed the perfect car seat buckle for the toddler.
- 15:24Speaker 1: And now the eldest daughter, who looks to be about
- 15:26Speaker 1: nine or ten, has secured herself in the booster seat.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Dad SIPs the bag clothes and they're off, But looks
- 15:33Speaker 1: like Mom doesn't realize her coffee cup is still on
- 15:35Speaker 1: the roof of the car, and there it goes. Oh,
- 15:40Speaker 1: that's a shame that mug was a fan favorite. Don't
- 15:43Speaker 1: sweat the small stuff. Just nailed the big stuff, like
- 15:45Speaker 1: making sure your kids are buckled correctly in the right
- 15:47Speaker 1: seat for their agent's eyes. Learn more n h t

- 16:25Speaker 1: Administration for Children and Families and the Council. Well, you
- 16:29Speaker 1: do a fantastic job. And you know, we we we
- 16:32Speaker 1: talked about these characters. You know, when I look at
- 16:34Speaker 1: the it feels like I'm watching Every time I watch
- 16:37Speaker 1: an episode of it feels like I'm watching a short movie.
- 16:41Speaker 1: It's the way it's shot, the greediness, the language. You know,
- 16:46Speaker 1: if you have a problem with the in word, don't
- 16:47Speaker 1: look at it, don't don't watch no fall. Okay, if
- 16:50Speaker 1: they there there's there's adult language. And I'm just talking
- 16:53Speaker 1: because a lot of people will see cable they don't.
- 16:54Speaker 1: But that's that's why I love about this series, because,
- 16:57Speaker 1: as they say, the script is real, the tonage is real,
- 17:01Speaker 1: the characterizations there is there is violence on this and
- 17:06Speaker 1: and I've never seen a black drama like this on television,
- 17:10Speaker 1: and I think it's unique, you know, like because why
- 17:12Speaker 1: I was something different. You know, Wire was the different different,
- 17:16Speaker 1: but this right here was it was different because it
- 17:19Speaker 1: was tied to a family. And you guys are this family.
- 17:22Speaker 1: And that's why I relate to the parenting aspect of
- 17:25Speaker 1: what you're saying. What the where? The wire was about
- 17:28Speaker 1: a lot of different people being caught up in the
- 17:30Speaker 1: drug It was about politicians. It was about the police
- 17:34Speaker 1: and all that stuff, and then how they would manipulate
- 17:36Speaker 1: numbers and say they were doing good and they weren't
- 17:39Speaker 1: doing good. This is about you, in particular, because you
- 17:42Speaker 1: taught Alter I would do whatever I need to do
- 17:45Speaker 1: to get my son out. It's about you and your
- 17:50Speaker 1: relationship with your son. Please tell us about that relationship. UM.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Franklin is you know as a mother, Um, you you
- 18:09Speaker 1: watch your child grow, you can see their greatness UM,
- 18:16Speaker 1: from very young right, UM, and Sissy has always seen
- 18:23Speaker 1: Franklin's greatness. She always knew she saw her husband in
- 18:27Speaker 1: her child. She saw the leader that her husband, Alton
- 18:32Speaker 1: is in her son, and she knew it was only
- 18:35Speaker 1: a matter of time that he would do great things. Um,
- 18:42Speaker 1: and her whole life she's been invested in that reality.
- 18:48Speaker 1: So it is heartbreaking that when she when she sees
- 18:57Speaker 1: him take this turn, m and you see this struggle
- 19:09Speaker 1: UM with him constantly trying to you know, we talked
- 19:14Speaker 1: about the change from episode two to episode three, UM,
- 19:20Speaker 1: where when she decides I'm going to help you, you know,
- 19:24Speaker 1: because she tried. She tried to do the moral thing
- 19:29Speaker 1: of walking away and shutting the door and saying I
- 19:32Speaker 1: am not with you, UM, and it didn't work. You know,
- 19:37Speaker 1: you tried. You tried a tactic, You're trying to save
- 19:40Speaker 1: your child, and it didn't work. This is not a
- 19:42Speaker 1: woman who is going to walk away from her child
- 19:45Speaker 1: for real, for real. And when he got shot, it
- 19:48Speaker 1: was it was unnatural. She went to his aid and
- 19:52Speaker 1: now and there was a discussion that that we didn't
- 19:55Speaker 1: film that. There was a discussion with Franklin and Sissy
- 19:58Speaker 1: where Franklin says, momm trying to better our community. I'm
- 20:04Speaker 1: trying to do the great things that we deserve. And
- 20:11Speaker 1: I understood that, and it's a nice step way to
- 20:16Speaker 1: get there. But one nobody knew that this is what
- 20:20Speaker 1: it would turn into. Franklin certainly didn't. We had no
- 20:23Speaker 1: conscious he had no nobody in the country had any
- 20:26Speaker 1: idea that Crack was going to evolve in the way
- 20:29Speaker 1: it does. We didn't have. This was a first of
- 20:32Speaker 1: its kind. So um I understood what he was doing
- 20:38Speaker 1: and why he was doing it because it follows the
- 20:41Speaker 1: same path as his as his father, and I was
- 20:45Speaker 1: there with Elton during the Black Panther journey, so I
- 20:49Speaker 1: get it. So now it is I understand the core
- 20:52Speaker 1: of what you're doing. Let me help you try my
- 20:55Speaker 1: best to do what I can to help you heal
- 20:59Speaker 1: this and get out of this so that we can
- 21:01Speaker 1: get back to our lives. And it's just that constant
- 21:05Speaker 1: investing in your child because you believe in their greatness
- 21:09Speaker 1: if we can just get out of this mess, you know.
- 21:13Speaker 1: And that's just the constant back and forth that happens
- 21:17Speaker 1: with this family, with so many families, you know, the
- 21:21Speaker 1: beauty of this series. And you know we're talking about
- 21:24Speaker 1: your family. But you have Irene who plays the investigative
- 21:27Speaker 1: reporter that her character builds this season and when she
- 21:31Speaker 1: gets information about what's really going on, and like I said,
- 21:34Speaker 1: you know, in a way, Franklin is caught up in
- 21:36Speaker 1: something that that was bigger than him. He didn't know
- 21:39Speaker 1: about what the government was doing. He didn't know that
- 21:43Speaker 1: this was a calculated fundraising activity that the Reagan administration
- 21:48Speaker 1: back it was tied to Oliver North. You know all
- 21:51Speaker 1: these names you could you can flip through the pages,
- 21:53Speaker 1: just the stories right there. Oliver dorth He the one Helm,
- 21:56Speaker 1: the whole Niko rob drug and selling drugs and guns
- 22:00Speaker 1: and for those campaigns and wrong Reagan they knew about
- 22:04Speaker 1: all this going on. So again the black community was
- 22:06Speaker 1: being used. Yes, they were selling drugs, but guess what
- 22:10Speaker 1: they were selling drugs and being fed drugs, cheap drugs
- 22:14Speaker 1: by the way on the counturally low prices, so they can,
- 22:17Speaker 1: so they can for military effort. And so you had Irene,
- 22:21Speaker 1: then you have Teddy Gustavo who's crazy, and then you
- 22:25Speaker 1: have all these that that's what makes a series so
- 22:27Speaker 1: unique because I don't have to focus so much on
- 22:30Speaker 1: your family. And poor Leon he's trapped, he got Scully,
- 22:33Speaker 1: his situation, all these born through all these characters. It's
- 22:37Speaker 1: all these characters. They are so colorful that it's really
- 22:41Speaker 1: like I said, it's like watching the movie and it's
- 22:43Speaker 1: so intense. And you know the scene where you was
- 22:48Speaker 1: caught up with the police officer, you know that was
- 22:51Speaker 1: I felt so nervous for you, Michael, I felt I
- 22:56Speaker 1: felt like, oh my god. You know, talk about that moment,
- 23:00Speaker 1: not revealing exactly what went on, but my god, you
- 23:04Speaker 1: you saw that scene and I thought something bad was
- 23:07Speaker 1: gonna go down. It's a bad thing go down, but
- 23:10Speaker 1: not like we expected. But talk about preparing yourself for
- 23:13Speaker 1: those moments because if FX is allowed to see no
- 23:17Speaker 1: snowfall to keep it real, yeah yeah, um, preparing for that,
- 23:24Speaker 1: preparing for anything that comes up in this gut wrenching show.
- 23:35Speaker 1: You really just have to well, I just I can't
- 23:41Speaker 1: think about it too much. Really, I mean, in order
- 23:46Speaker 1: to do this kind of work for me, I have
- 23:50Speaker 1: to throw ego out the window, um, and just allow
- 23:58Speaker 1: myself to be very raw. Um, and whatever comes from
- 24:05Speaker 1: that is what's gonna come. And and in in that
- 24:09Speaker 1: I trust that I know that it is the truth
- 24:12Speaker 1: because I'm not trying to do anything. Um, I learned
- 24:17Speaker 1: my lines. I understand obviously, I understand the story that
- 24:21Speaker 1: The wonderful thing about this story, um, is this this
- 24:26Speaker 1: show is that it is filled with some tremendous writers.
- 24:30Speaker 1: So it makes the work so easy because I don't
- 24:36Speaker 1: have to second guess what's on the page. I can
- 24:39Speaker 1: fully lend myself to the words on the page because
- 24:44Speaker 1: they right so beautifully, they write so truthfully. Um, and
- 24:49Speaker 1: then you know what, it is uncomfortable. You know this
- 24:55Speaker 1: scene has already been aired so I can talk about it.
- 24:58Speaker 1: It was incredibly uncomfortable. It was all night. It was
- 25:02Speaker 1: take after take. It was you know, in those damn
- 25:06Speaker 1: handcuffs and in a graveyard. It was just how did
- 25:12Speaker 1: they shoot you? Bang in your head though? When you
- 25:15Speaker 1: was in the back seat, in the back seat of
- 25:18Speaker 1: this thing, over and over and over and over. I
- 25:22Speaker 1: think I had a little knogg but shoot for a
- 25:27Speaker 1: few more days or something. So it was fine. And
- 25:29Speaker 1: they kept saying, Michael, are you okay? Okay, I'm just
- 25:32Speaker 1: because because soon as I said, you know, because you know,
- 25:35Speaker 1: I've cast so many I've been fortunate to be part
- 25:37Speaker 1: of production like that, and I go, she banged her head? Okay,
- 25:41Speaker 1: how many times did he shoot the scene her banging?
- 25:43Speaker 1: Because he applies to break? So I knew that was
- 25:46Speaker 1: like in my mind, I watched this team and said
- 25:48Speaker 1: when because it shot it this way, No, I think
- 25:51Speaker 1: she banged her head. I tried my best. I mean,
- 25:55Speaker 1: you know, they don't have me doing a bunch of
- 25:56Speaker 1: stunts and stuff. But I mean, you know, it's it's
- 25:59Speaker 1: just I don't I don't want the buffers and the
- 26:02Speaker 1: stunt doubles or all that stuff. If I can do it,
- 26:05Speaker 1: if it's remotely doable, I'm just gonna do it because
- 26:09Speaker 1: I mean, it's just more truthful that way, you know. Unfortunately,
- 26:12Speaker 1: when I got to see you know, all of the
- 26:14Speaker 1: North on trial, you know about this whole situation where
- 26:18Speaker 1: That's why I said that you're taking a true story
- 26:21Speaker 1: and putting in a dramatic series and you're playing it.
- 26:25Speaker 1: Some characters may be redeveloped, so may be fictional, But
- 26:28Speaker 1: the beauty of it, this is a story about a
- 26:31Speaker 1: mother's passionate love for her son trying to get him
- 26:34Speaker 1: a way out and in the process is she wrong?
- 26:38Speaker 1: Is Michael? Is your character wrong? Is Sincy's character wrong
- 26:42Speaker 1: in her approach? Because you know he does some things,
- 26:46Speaker 1: especially to those bookstore owners that was really cold. But
- 26:51Speaker 1: but tell us is Sincy? Are you? Are you wrong
- 26:55Speaker 1: for leading them in that direction? Are you just so
- 26:57Speaker 1: determined to get him out? Boy? Oh, that's that's a
- 27:06Speaker 1: deep question. And the only way I can answer it
- 27:09Speaker 1: is um wrong? Is in the eye of the viewer.
- 27:17Speaker 1: But I tell you what though, I yes, Sissy has
- 27:23Speaker 1: compromised a great deal of herself. And it does not
- 27:30Speaker 1: feel good. You know, it does not feel good. Um,
- 27:35Speaker 1: Cissy has been compromising from you know, even taking this
- 27:41Speaker 1: job as the the manager, the property manager, um with
- 27:48Speaker 1: with for tofus who is as crooked as they come.
- 27:54Speaker 1: H turning a blind eye to that because why I
- 27:57Speaker 1: need to put food on the table. And and at
- 28:02Speaker 1: your husband, right, I mean, and and you know, but right,
- 28:08Speaker 1: and and it's it's it's it's almost making okay, yeah,
- 28:15Speaker 1: you know. And then and then that gentleman whatever his
- 28:18Speaker 1: name was. I mean, there is no doubt that Sissy
- 28:23Speaker 1: looks at herself in the mirror and realizes that this
- 28:29Speaker 1: is not who she ever desired to be, ever meant
- 28:35Speaker 1: to be. But it's a means to an end. And
- 28:41Speaker 1: it is my son. And if I don't, who the
- 28:46Speaker 1: hell am I going to be that day when I
- 28:50Speaker 1: turn away and say no, I'm not doing it anymore
- 28:53Speaker 1: and I wake up and my son is dead? What
- 28:59Speaker 1: what kind of life? Who? Who? Who would Sissy be?
- 29:03Speaker 1: And when when she was faced with that reality that
- 29:09Speaker 1: death is the next option for her child. She had
- 29:13Speaker 1: to compromise. But you know it's it's it's always with
- 29:18Speaker 1: the understanding that I'm doing this. I'm taking two steps
- 29:22Speaker 1: back because I'm gonna take three steps forward and because
- 29:26Speaker 1: of that vision of the steps forward for Cissy, it's
- 29:31Speaker 1: worth it. Wow, mother knows best is I don't always
- 29:36Speaker 1: know best, just trying are damnedest to make things work.
- 29:40Speaker 1: This is true, but in the sense because you give
- 29:42Speaker 1: him artists you you you hear your husband complaining, So
- 29:45Speaker 1: mother knows best. There your son, you're directing him to
- 29:49Speaker 1: do certain things, whether he and what you you're saying.
- 29:52Speaker 1: You're trying to get him out. Like I said, the
- 29:54Speaker 1: beauty of this series is that it gives you so
- 29:56Speaker 1: many different ways to portray how this community is. Because
- 29:59Speaker 1: you have a book show on us where you take
- 30:01Speaker 1: away that's a different form of drug deal and you
- 30:03Speaker 1: take them out of their lives bilihoods by doing the
- 30:05Speaker 1: deal that they thought was an honest deal. So that's
- 30:08Speaker 1: a way of just taking the community and you told
- 30:10Speaker 1: them to get that deal done. Your husband, Alton tells
- 30:13Speaker 1: you mother knows best that Hey, you're dealing with a crook,
- 30:17Speaker 1: a snake in the grass, you go stop that. I'll
- 30:20Speaker 1: do whatever it takes to get my son out of
- 30:22Speaker 1: this mess, out of this world and get his life right.
- 30:25Speaker 1: But the beauty of it all is is that is
- 30:27Speaker 1: in nineteen five. You can catch it every Wednesday. You're
- 30:31Speaker 1: an amazing actress. Uh you have a beautiful smile. I
- 30:34Speaker 1: don't see it that much on this episode, but my
- 30:37Speaker 1: my god, you are a mother that I would want
- 30:40Speaker 1: because guess what, You're taking care of it. And you
- 30:43Speaker 1: know when I look at shows like this, you know,
- 30:45Speaker 1: because here's here's I'm going. This is my compliment all
- 30:48Speaker 1: my life. I've always wanted a black godfather all I've
- 30:51Speaker 1: like all my life. I wanted to see it play
- 30:54Speaker 1: out where there was love tied to the violence, and
- 30:57Speaker 1: why the violence, because this is a good story to ellen,
- 31:00Speaker 1: and I finally got. I wanted my soprano. Okay, I
- 31:04Speaker 1: have it. I have it in Snowfall. I have my soprano,
- 31:08Speaker 1: and and and thank you and thank you for allowing
- 31:12Speaker 1: me to enjoy a series. Thank you for getting me
- 31:16Speaker 1: involved your So it's hard for Leon. I don't know
- 31:18Speaker 1: what's gonna happen to him. Poor boy helped a little cracker.
- 31:21Speaker 1: Now he's sleeping on the streets. You know you. They're
- 31:23Speaker 1: platting his half, brighting this half so many stories that
- 31:30Speaker 1: are gonna get herself killed. I don't know this newspaper again.
- 31:35Speaker 1: What I love about this show is I have so
- 31:37Speaker 1: many times I can turn on the show. I know
- 31:40Speaker 1: it's gonna be two or three solid story lines that
- 31:42Speaker 1: gonna get me emotionally involved. But more important to the the
- 31:45Speaker 1: storyline that I cared the most about is your relationship
- 31:48Speaker 1: with your son. Thank you, thank you, thank you so
- 31:54Speaker 1: very much. I am grateful to have the opportunity to
- 31:57Speaker 1: reach you and all of us. I am so grateful.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Thank you for watching us. Absolutely and I'm gonna watch
- 32:05Speaker 1: it every Wednesday, f FX ten pm, snowfall. And this
- 32:09Speaker 1: is beautiful talented actors by you know from the Jamaica
- 32:14Speaker 1: parents and Britain and came over in tens. She went
- 32:16Speaker 1: to an hbc U. HBCU changed her life and her son.
- 32:20Speaker 1: He's gonna go to HBCU, preferably Howard. But if he
- 32:23Speaker 1: doesn't go to how she love it's an HBCU. She's
- 32:26Speaker 1: cool with it. But more importantly, I love you and
- 32:29Speaker 1: don't change, Okay, I love you. Thank you so much
