- 0:03These headlines point us back to what really matters. Ordinary
- 0:07neighbors showing extraordinary care. I'm Johan
- 0:11Heinrichs and this is Neighbourly Headlines. Real stories of
- 0:14kindness, community and faith in action across Canada.
- 0:18Let's take a look at what's been happening close to home.
- 0:28Most days, headlines rush past us full of noise.
- 0:32But tucked inside are some stories that remind us of
- 0:35kindness and faith at work in ordinary places. Today
- 0:39we're celebrating the quiet, everyday ways Canadians are turning their
- 0:43neighborhoods into places of real support. From mutual aid
- 0:47check ins to community rinks and community hubs that keep the lights on long
- 0:50after the holiday decorations come down. Lets get right into our
- 0:54headlines.
- 1:00Ontario's everyday mutual aid. Across three
- 1:04Ontario neighbourhoods, the building resilient neighbourhoods pilot
- 1:07trained everyday folks to offer simple practical support.
- 1:11Things like walking a new mother's baby so that she can take a nap. Or
- 1:15tying a daily ribbon to an elderly neighbor's door so they know someone is
- 1:19checking in. Over two years these small
- 1:22gestures have reduced loneliness, strengthened trust and
- 1:26helped people age safely in their own homes.
- 1:30It's neighborliness distilled to its clearest form.
- 1:33Ordinary people showing up again and again with
- 1:37whatever they have. What I love here is how care can become
- 1:41contagious. One trained neighbor inspires three more
- 1:44and suddenly a whole block is holding each other gently.
- 1:48To me, this is loving your neighbor made beautifully concrete.
- 1:54Curling volunteers keeping B.C. communities alive
- 1:57in the small British Columbia towns of Kimberley and Kelowna,
- 2:01curling volunteers like Denise and Warren are the reason the ice
- 2:05stays swept, tournaments run smoothly and newcomers
- 2:08always feel welcome. They juggle coaching, rank
- 2:12maintenance, event planning and even food bank shifts. All
- 2:16to make sure that the curling club remains a vibrant gathering place for every
- 2:19generation. Their passion has turned the winter sport into a
- 2:23year round community glue, drawing visitors and keeping small
- 2:27town hearts beating strong. It's proof that when you pour
- 2:30love into something you love, the whole neighborhood gets swept
- 2:34along in the joy. And as the church. Why don't we use this as a
- 2:37good example of how to use our spaces well to
- 2:41become the heart of a community and the source of vibrancy of
- 2:45people coming together. Just a little food for thought.
- 2:55Before we get into our last story. It's time for Neighborhood Watch where we
- 2:59peek at the real complaints Canadians bring to their cities.
- 3:02Because community life is nothing if not creative.
- 3:07Salt Spring Island, British Columbia A full on chicken
- 3:11war is headed to court as a rooster owner challenges a noise bylaw
- 3:14over her bird Orion, who has allegedly been waking the neighbors
- 3:18far too early for their taste. On Salt Spring island,
- 3:22one neighbor claims the rooster next door is loud and it must be hooked up
- 3:26to an amplifier. The owner insists he's no louder
- 3:30than nearby ferry traffic and and says Oregon is essential
- 3:33for protecting her flock. Bylaw officers have taken decibel
- 3:37readings, issued tickets and offered rooster curfew solutions like
- 3:41automatic coop doors. Now the whole debate rule
- 3:45rights, noise rules and what counts as a real farm
- 3:48is landing in provincial court. And yes, there is a petition with
- 3:52hundreds of signatures supporting the rooster.
- 3:56I've encountered some odd bold birds with but if your
- 3:59neighbor's rooster sounds amplified, that's less of a poultry
- 4:03problem and more of an acoustics phenomenon. Jump into our
- 4:07Carrier Impact podcast group on Facebook and vote. Would you call
- 4:11this one in? Would you talk to your neighbor? Would you do
- 4:14something to the rooster? Or would you let it go quietly and invest
- 4:18in noise canceling headphones? Whatever your stance is,
- 4:22every neighborhood's got its quirks. Now onto our
- 4:26final story. Winnipeg's Chalmers Hub turns
- 4:29holidays into year round care. Now this one's personal because
- 4:33I grew up going to that community club. I played for the soccer team
- 4:37and we went undefeated two years in a row. And last I checked,
- 4:40a few years ago, our team picture was still hanging on that
- 4:44wall. Anyway, on with the story. At the Chalmers
- 4:48Neighborhood Renewal Hub on Poplar Avenue in Winnipeg, volunteers
- 4:52recently hosted two heartfelt December fundraisers,
- 4:55complete with shared meals, laughter and neighbors
- 4:59pitching in side by side to support family programs,
- 5:02senior activities and active living initiatives year round.
- 5:06In the middle of a Manitoba winter, people showed up with food,
- 5:10time and donations to make sure their community hub stays warm,
- 5:14open and deeply welcoming, its holiday
- 5:17spirit transformed into tangible, lasting care
- 5:21for an entire block. This one makes me smile because it
- 5:24shows how a potluck or a bake sale can
- 5:28quietly become the heartbeat of a sustained neighborly love.
- 5:33These headlines remind us that good news is still all around us
- 5:37if we take the time to notice. Do you have a story of
- 5:41care happening in your neighborhood? Share it at NeighborlyPodcast
