Latest / The Lila Rose Show / E66: Matt Fradd on Purpose, Podcasting, and Burning Out
Transcript
- 0:00So how do you approach being an interviewer?
- 0:02I try to be interested in who I'm talking to.
- 0:04I've definitely been burned where I've done a podcast and I
- 0:07came off like a the giant idiot that I am and then people just
- 0:11scorched me and it was brutal. What do you want to be long term
- 0:15with your show? Like I I frequently struggle
- 0:18with whether or not I should be doing it.
- 0:19Like I would like to quit. And then other days I feel like
- 0:21why would I be so ungrateful to myself after having done all
- 0:24this work? I would like to be someone who
- 0:27wants to be a good husband and a good father to my children and
- 0:30I, and I want to be the kind of man who like, focuses on them
- 0:34first. So I'm actually going to be
- 0:35taking a sabbatical soon. Wow.
- 0:37Maybe for about 6 months. Wow.
- 0:42Hey guys, welcome back to the Lila Rose Podcast.
- 0:45All right, first of all, I have to thank all of you so much for

- 1:06It's been a very fun 6-7 months doing this and I'm really
- 1:10excited for the future. I am learning a lot as we go
- 1:13about podcasting. I am learning a lot about
- 1:16interviews and the kind of content that we want to create.
- 1:19Ultimately, I'm very excited to keep going and I believe that
- 1:23there's so much more to explore for today's episode is going to
- 1:26be with Matt Frad. He's a Repeat Now guest to the
- 1:29podcast we had him on a few weeks ago with his lovely wife

- 1:38Aquinas fans who also listen to this channel.

- 1:44YouTube, so go check it out. Matt is an author, he's a
- 1:47speaker and he's of course a podcaster.
- 1:50And in this episode, we really got into the art of podcasting,
- 1:54Matt's exerience growing his channel over the last several
- 1:57years, how he approaches interviewing, how he approaches
- 2:00the topics of philosophy and theology on his show.

- 3:20podcast. Thank.
- 3:21You very much. It's good to be here again.
- 3:23We've been talking a lot today. I spent a couple hours going
- 3:26strong. So if we seem exhausted, it's
- 3:28not because we're bored, it's because we're exhausted.
- 3:31This is going to be the best podcast of all the podcasts.
- 3:33No, I can't beat the one with Cameron in it.
- 3:35That was pretty good. That was pretty good.
- 3:36I love your wife. Yeah, she's really.
- 3:38Special Yeah, she is pretty amazing.
- 3:41OK, so for those who don't know you, you're Matt Fred of the Met
- 3:44of the Pints with the Coinus podcast.
- 3:45That's correct. All right, so people, my
- 3:47audience know, I'm sure many of them know, is Pints with the
- 3:49Coinus maybe. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:50Or now they're going to know about it.
- 3:51But you're basically the Catholic Joe Rogan.
- 3:53People say that. Why do you think they say that?
- 3:55I don't know. Do other people say that?
- 3:56I thought that was my idea. I think it's because I stole the
- 3:59idea. Actually, no, that's here, John
- 4:01in the studio here. I think that was his idea.
- 4:03Well, I do long form discussions and I like them a lot.
- 4:07I'm nowhere near as good an interviewer as Joe Rogan is, but
- 4:10I think he does an excellent, excellent job letting people
- 4:12talk and pushing back where he doesn't necessarily agree and
- 4:16trying to understand things. And he doesn't pretend to know
- 4:18things that he doesn't know. You know what I mean?
- 4:21And so I like those things about him.
- 4:24So you've interviewed me twice on your podcast.
- 4:26That's right. And you told me the last time I
- 4:29went out there in studio, he told me.
- 4:31I don't know if this is true. I'm going to ask you right now.
- 4:33Yeah. That you don't prep for your
- 4:34interviews. You don't have any interview
- 4:36questions prepped. I never have any.
- 4:38And you just went for it. Yeah.
- 4:40And you actually asked me in that interview.
- 4:42What should I ask you? I think what I meant when I
- 4:45asked guests like is I, I said, is there anything you want me to
- 4:48ask you? What I mean is like general
- 4:49themes that you want to talk about that will make.
- 4:51For my thing. It really is.
- 4:53No, it really is. No, I never come up with
- 4:55questions beforehand. No, I don't think.
- 4:56We've never done that once. I'm trying to think honestly,
- 5:01no, I think there's times I've had higher profile interviews
- 5:05like with Dennis Prager and I thought, I've got to say this,
- 5:07I've got to ask this so. For my interview that was, I'm
- 5:13so sorry there was not for any prep.
- 5:15Well, I I guess, but Dennis Prager, he got it.
- 5:19That's fair. It's OK.
- 5:20Dennis Prager is, you know, I think.
- 5:21It was more than it was adversarial.
- 5:23I knew I thought it was going to be.
- 5:24So I had to know what kind of things do I want to ask?
- 5:26That was more it and. Then because you had that
- 5:28disagreement about lost and product, be OK.
- 5:31And that was really funny. I went on Ben Shapiro's show and
- 5:33I had my elbows up and I was ready.
- 5:36I didn't know if you. Prepped.
- 5:38I prepped. I look so weird in that because
- 5:42my my my producer put up the screen for me to watch Ben
- 5:46Shapiro while I was talking to him.
- 5:47But if I was watching him, I needed to be looking in the
- 5:49camera. So he ended up turning it
- 5:50around. So I'm talking to him, not
- 5:53seeing his facial expressions, not seeing when he's smirking,
- 5:55and I'm just looking deadpan and angry into the camera.
- 5:58I was, I was, I thought he, I thought he was going to take
- 6:01Prager's side and I was going to have to go to battle.
- 6:03And me fighting Ben Shapiro intellectually would be like me
- 6:06physically fighting Joe Rogan. I would not stand a chance.
- 6:10So I was a little nervous. But he sided with you in the
- 6:12end. He did.
- 6:13What was he siding with you about?
- 6:15We he it was about lust within marriage and whether it's OK.
- 6:18And the last question I ask him is have I changed your mind?
- 6:21And people can go and watch that episode to see if he did.
- 6:23And your position was that lust within marriage is wrong?
- 6:25Yes, lust is a sin, so it's always wrong.
- 6:28And how do you define lust? Lust is reducing a person to
- 6:32their sexual value. People have sexual value, but
- 6:35when we sort of isolate it from the person, treat them merely as
- 6:39a means to an end, that this isn't how we should be treating
- 6:43people. So what I like about your show
- 6:45is that it's all based on Thomas Aquinas.
- 6:49It really is the genius. OK, Well, no.
- 6:50Well, OK. Oh, it's not anymore.
- 6:52Circle back. Then, well, but but when I say
- 6:54that is you started from let's get these basic truths about
- 6:59philosophy and natural law out there and talk about interesting
- 7:02things. But now you're saying we don't
- 7:05just talk. I mean, I, yeah, of course you
- 7:07don't talk about it. But it was founded on, it's
- 7:08called Pines with the clients. It was founded on that.
- 7:11It's definitely evolved so that it it's more just long form
- 7:15discussions about faith and philosophy and you.
- 7:18Don't want to be pigeonholed into.
- 7:19No, it's just about I don't have the intellectual stanima or
- 7:23depth to to be talking on Aquinas full time.
- 7:26So I have people on who can do that.
- 7:28I see that's a good tack to take have.
- 7:31Other people do the work. There you go.
- 7:32Like you don't ask your own questions.
- 7:36I asked my own questions. One day we'll use AI and you'll
- 7:40just be talking to someone in a green suit.
- 7:41You know, I will admit for an interview, I'm not going to say
- 7:44which person it was, but we did go to the little AI box and put
- 7:49in their name and we said what questions should we ask?
- 7:52I just was partly curious. They were fantastic questions.
- 7:56I can't even say I I remembered them or asked them.
- 7:58Well. If I had, it probably would have
- 7:59been a better interview. It was scary how impressive it
- 8:02was. How many years have you been
- 8:04doing pints with Aquinas? Well, as far as interviews or as
- 8:07it started in 2016, OK, but then it morphed.
- 8:11So then I was doing that. Seven years.
- 8:13Where I would, yeah, I was doing episodes where I just focused on
- 8:16an article of the Suma, which is like something Thomas Aquinas
- 8:18wrote. And then I started wanting to do
- 8:20interviews, long form interviews, and I didn't want to
- 8:22muddy what Pints with Aquinas was, so I called it something
- 8:24different. It was called the Matt Frad
- 8:25Show, very original. And then it was like, this is
- 8:27weird. I've got 2 podcasts, the Matt
- 8:29Frad Show, Pints with Aquinas, and yet a lot of the time I'm
- 8:32talking about Aquinas or the Catholic faith anyway, you know
- 8:34what, I'm just going to call everything Pints with Aquinas.
- 8:36And so that's kind of part of how it evolved into what it is
- 8:39today. So you don't think it's the Matt
- 8:40Frad show is original? Well, I not really know.
- 8:43Is the Lila Rose podcast. Oh my gosh this is just mad.
- 8:46Fred just ripping into Lila Rose constantly.
- 8:50I will say I felt a little better when I learned that Pines
- 8:52with Aquinas has been around since 2014 because we are a new
- 8:55podcast and I look up to you, Matt, as an older brother in the
- 8:59faith, the wise beard of the, you know, Catholic conservative
- 9:03Christian podcasting movement and we are following slowly in
- 9:07your footsteps. I hope one day to have a mug on
- 9:10my show that I can sell for a locals membership.
- 9:12Sure. Yeah, it's working well for me.
- 9:14How is that working for you? What bet, locals?
- 9:17And the mug. You have a really cool Tumblr.
- 9:19So. When is it a Tumblr?
- 9:20No, it's a mug. It's a very beautiful beer Stein
- 9:24that that really you could buy for $30 and you'd be impressed.
- 9:28Like it's a handmade beautiful beer Stein.
- 9:30If people sign up to get it on your locals account on the show,
- 9:33can I get a gut event? Well, they can't.
- 9:36Anymore but you I'll send you a they're sold out but.
- 9:39No, you cannot have a car. We it was.
- 9:41That was a joke by the. Way I know we did a promo month,
- 9:44it was the last month we gave them away wow, but.
- 9:47But so you're saying you designed this beautiful mug and
- 9:49that helps you build subscriptions for the?
- 9:51I think that whenever people encounter something like some
- 9:53kind of product, some kind of service, you either get what you
- 9:56expected less or more. And I really want people to get
- 10:00more. And that's and that sounds
- 10:03that's that would be part of my advice to people who are selling
- 10:05a podcast. It's like give people what you
- 10:07would want to be given. So on locals, and this is not a
- 10:10long sales pitch for locals, but since you wanted to talk about
- 10:12how podcasts can be successful, I guess we have we have.
- 10:17Oh God. You're clearly, since you're
- 10:21clearly struggling with yours. Yeah, yes.
- 10:24I was like you're the. One who told me you wanted me to
- 10:27talk about this. No, I do.
- 10:28I do, I really do. We need it.
- 10:30We need the help, right guys? We do.
- 10:31We really actually need. We're, we're growing this
- 10:33podcast. It's a new project and you are
- 10:35here to help. But why do you want to grow it?
- 10:38Because I want to reach more people with GTP, goodness,
- 10:40truth, beauty. I really, I really do.
- 10:43And the reason I've been fighting the abortion fight this
- 10:46is, I know you're interviewing me now, but I was been fighting
- 10:48the abortion fight for since I was a teenager, right?
- 10:52And the reason we have abortion is because so many people are so
- 10:56broken down and so confused about all the muck and the chaos
- 10:59of the culture. And so if we can just share the
- 11:01goodness of relationships and the beauty of, you know, family
- 11:05and the beauty of just like learning health mentally and
- 11:07physically and spirituality, everything.
- 11:10Anti whatever podcast. Yeah, it's what we need.
- 11:12Yeah, it's a no. It's a pro.
- 11:13Well, it's a pro podcast. We're the pro podcasts.
- 11:16No but it's a anti whatever podcast.
- 11:18Oh an anti whatever podcast? That that that podcast seems to
- 11:21be. Promoted.
- 11:22OK. Yeah, I mean.
- 11:23That's beautiful. Good for you.
- 11:24Yeah, but that's I think your project too.
- 11:26I mean, you're. Yeah, I don't know.
- 11:27I just really like doing it. I like doing it too.
- 11:29Like, you know, like sometimes you sometimes you come up with
- 11:31reasons that sound, I'm not saying you did this, but
- 11:33sometimes you come up with reasons that sound really good
- 11:35to people. But then you're like, well,
- 11:36what? That is true, of course, but
- 11:38like, why do I actually do it? Like I really like talking to
- 11:40people and I like talking to interesting people and I like
- 11:43learning from people. So that's why I continue to do
- 11:45it. And having a wide variety of
- 11:47guests with different interests and different personalities, I
- 11:51really that really suits my personality because I tend to
- 11:53get bored very, very quickly. Same.
- 11:56I do too. Yeah.
- 11:59No, but I did the same thing because I thought and and I
- 12:02think this is a way to think about people say what's my
- 12:03purpose? This is I know I'm going serious
- 12:06when we were joking around. So all right, let's just go
- 12:08serious. Really quick.
- 12:09Really quick. So you can think what are my
- 12:11gifts and my talents? What do I enjoy doing?
- 12:13And then what does the world need?
- 12:14And so I thought, I do enjoy doing this.
- 12:16It's easy, it's fun. Maybe I have some talent for it,
- 12:18but you know, I'm not sure yet. We're working on that.
- 12:21And then the last piece is the world needs, I think more GB
- 12:26type goodness, truth, beauty stuff out there.
- 12:28Is that my podcast? I'm still figuring that out.
- 12:30We're working on it, you know, but it's fun.
- 12:32It's fun. It's.
- 12:33Cool to figure stuff out, like it's cool to grow as an
- 12:35interviewer, mess up, regret certain interviews you did
- 12:39because people said things that you wish they didn't, and then
- 12:41you published it and got heat for it.
- 12:42Like this is all part of it. It's part of the growing
- 12:44process. So how do you approach being an
- 12:46interviewer? I try to be interested in who
- 12:48I'm talking to, so and I try not to think about what I want to
- 12:53say while they're speaking, even if that means there's a bit of
- 12:57dead air after they speak, because I hadn't thought of what
- 12:59to say. Like I would rather that.
- 13:03That's great. That's very.
- 13:04Good. Right on cue.
- 13:07So if you think of something while they're talking, you let
- 13:10it go if. It's important, I might write it
- 13:11down. OK.
- 13:13But you know, when you're talking to someone and you get
- 13:17the sense that they're just waiting for you to stop talking
- 13:19so they can unleash another set of wisdom upon you.
- 13:23And it's annoying. So I, I want to be interested
- 13:25and I try to ask the questions that actually interest me.
- 13:28So I, I, I don't know if this is right or not, but I think to
- 13:30myself, if I just have this conversation for my benefit, not
- 13:35care about anybody else, it'll end up benefiting other people.
- 13:38But if I tailor it in such a way that it's helpful for everybody,
- 13:42it'll end up being bland and as interesting as dentist art or
- 13:46that. What is dentist art on the
- 13:49dentist's wall? Yeah, just boring.
- 13:50Who cares? Yeah, that crap you get up
- 13:52there, it's just yes, that, yes, that thing.
- 13:55I've just pointed at it. You're like, who the heck knows?
- 13:59It is. I mean, if someone, a guest who
- 14:01watches the show, wants to create original art for the
- 14:03background, I will find the. Upset it's a big pint for the
- 14:05Grand Beer style, yeah. On the.
- 14:09Wall No, I mean, or it's like another example would be hotel
- 14:11advertising. You know, you get into an
- 14:12elevator at a hotel and there's this big advertising link for
- 14:15the hotel. It's in the it's intended
- 14:18purpose is to appeal to everybody, right?
- 14:21The last thing they want to do is offend or marginalized
- 14:23anybody at all, and consequently it interests nobody.
- 14:27So I my advice for myself and for you and for other
- 14:30interviewers is just to be big goofy, awkward you and let
- 14:33people get upset in the comments section and care more about the
- 14:36people around you who know what you want and have them correct
- 14:41you, them criticize you, them encourage you, and forget the
- 14:44comments section. That's really good advice.
- 14:46Yeah, it is. Have you always done that?
- 14:49No, I've definitely been burned where I've done a podcast and I
- 14:52came off like a the giant idiot that I am.
- 14:55And then people just scorched me and it was brutal.
- 14:59I wish I could say like I wish I had like the temperament of Matt
- 15:02Walsh, who probably just would go fishing and have a whiskey,
- 15:04but instead I'm like, Oh my God, what am I going to do?
- 15:06I don't I didn't cry, but like I was really upset about it.
- 15:09And when that happened once it was a pretty big thing.
- 15:13I, I don't want to get into the, the specifics of it, but because
- 15:16other people are involved, but I, I put my laptop and phone
- 15:19away for the weekend and just didn't.
- 15:21And I just, I think I emerged like a phoenix from the ashes,
- 15:26much thicker skin. So I don't care really if people
- 15:29are upset in the way I used to. So you can't tell me what
- 15:32podcast that was. Yeah, I don't want to the worst
- 15:34ever I. Don't want to get into the
- 15:35people? Not the So was it the problem
- 15:37was in the podcast, the person you were interviewing there was
- 15:40an issue. Me.
- 15:40It was them. What?
- 15:41Were you doing, what were you doing in that podcast that made
- 15:44it the worst? Podcast I'm not, I'm not.
- 15:45I don't want to get into it because it'll it'll there's
- 15:47things I said, things I didn't say, things I should have said
- 15:51but forgot to. Podcast it was Lila Rose.
- 15:53It was just a train wreck. So I don't I don't want to say
- 16:00no, it was it wasn't just there's multiple different
- 16:02things, you know, and we don't like.
- 16:04It's like we're not you think of it on a given day, how many
- 16:08people come up to you and say you suck?
- 16:10Like and here's why. On YouTube or in real?
- 16:13Life on YouTube, it's all the time in real life, like we're
- 16:15not ready for this, you know? And so I think that people who
- 16:19are doing it well just choose not to care.
- 16:23Like, and I remember Tucker Carlson being asked about that
- 16:26dead face. He does, you know how he does
- 16:28that face in interviews. And he brought up that point if
- 16:31he was concerned what other people thought, it would drive
- 16:33him neurotic. So he just doesn't care.
- 16:35And Joe Rogan doesn't read comments.
- 16:37And it seems like the people who are doing a good job and
- 16:40remaining sane just aren't interested in what you know,
- 16:44whoever some burner account says about them on YouTube.
- 16:47So what do you? What do you want to be long term
- 16:51with your show, with your mission?
- 16:53Are you just kind of enjoying the ride or do you have you're a
- 16:56choleric melancholic, right? Other way around.
- 16:59Sorry, you're a melancholic choleric and usually those
- 17:01people are very driven and specific.
- 17:04Yeah, I don't know. I, I, I have no plan.
- 17:08I have no five year plan. I have no overarching goal.
- 17:13I would like to be someone who wants to be a good husband and a
- 17:17good father to my children and I and I want to be the kind of man
- 17:20who like, focuses on them first, you know, and, and tries to be a
- 17:25St. I want to pray every day.
- 17:27I want to, I want to, I want to walk the walk.
- 17:29I, I don't want to waste my time listening to news media when I
- 17:32could be reading scripture and the lives of the Saints.
- 17:35That's what that's who I want to be.
- 17:36I want to have more naps. I want to have a nap every day.
- 17:40I want to get rid of my smartphone eventually.
- 17:42I want to have a cigar every morning.
- 17:44In the morning. Oh, every morning, Yeah.
- 17:46Love it. Yeah, it's my favorite time and
- 17:49I just. I want to be good to.
- 17:50My breakfast cereal. I don't eat breakfast, so I just
- 17:52have black coffee and cigars. Yeah, Yep.
- 17:56And yeah, so. And as far as the podcast, I
- 18:00don't know. Is that healthy?
- 18:02I don't. I don't care that much, but I,
- 18:04I, I want to, I don't know, I might cut like I, I frequently
- 18:11struggle with whether or not I should be doing it.
- 18:13Like I would like to quit many days and then other days I feel
- 18:16like, why would I be so ungrateful to myself after
- 18:19having done all this work? Like if I gave you or you pints
- 18:22with Aquinas, not you, because you have your own thing and
- 18:25you're busy enough. But if I just gave some random
- 18:26person without a job, here's my podcast and here's the revenue
- 18:30and here's what I'm doing. And they acted as ungrateful as
- 18:33I do to to myself for all the work I'd be up.
- 18:36I'd be like with the where's the gratitude?
- 18:38So I think, you know, we have to be.
- 18:39I'm grateful. I'm I'm, I have put in a lot of
- 18:42work and I am proud of what it is in many respects.
- 18:46But I do often think like, what's the off ramp?
- 18:48How do I get off of this thing? Is that because it's stressful
- 18:50for you sometimes or why it's? Not stressful.
- 18:53Why? Why do you?
- 18:54Why are you even? Thinking of an off ramp, I get
- 18:56pretty overwhelmed by modern technology and I have to live in
- 18:59that world and I don't know how to balance it I'm so that's why.
- 19:06And what does that mean? That means you're looking at the
- 19:08YouTube channel and you don't want to be looking at it.
- 19:11Emails, correspondence, you know, feeding the machine, even
- 19:17things like, you know, YouTube where you got a gig.
- 19:19I got to get those videos up or else the algorithm will dip.
- 19:21And if the algorithm dips, then you'll get less of this.
- 19:23And I just that that bothers me. I don't want to be someone who's
- 19:27concerned about that. So I'm actually going to be
- 19:29taking a sabbatical soon. Wow.
- 19:33Maybe for about 6 months. Wow.
- 19:34And so if I do that, it looks like I'm going to, if I do that,
- 19:37then I'm pre recording episodes now, but I'm also going to be
- 19:41hiring somebody who's going to be fantastic, way better than me
- 19:44to sit in my seat and host interviews.
- 19:47And then we'll see how that goes.
- 19:50When does that start? Well, it might not happen, I
- 19:53don't want to claim it will, but January or mid January?
- 19:56February. What are you going to do for
- 19:58your six months? I so this is all tentative so
- 20:01nobody hold me to this place. I've been asked to teach in
- 20:04Austria at at Franciscans University in Garming.
- 20:08So I might be Co teaching some philosophy courses and might I
- 20:11might take my family to do that. If it's not that, it'll be
- 20:14something else. That sounds amazing.
- 20:17Have you been to Austria before? No.
- 20:20What does Cam think about that? Well, I think we're open to
- 20:25what's best for our family, and so she's very much open to it as
- 20:30well. Do you feel burnt out?
- 20:33I frequently vacillate between feeling burnt out and feeling
- 20:37completely exhilarated. Are you burnt out of the feel?
- 20:42Yelling. I don't, I don't think I'm burnt
- 20:44out. I, I don't do a lot.
- 20:47I probably do more than I think you probably do more than you
- 20:49think. I think like I think I, I'm very
- 20:51entrepreneurial. I love doing things.
- 20:54Like I have a whole Catholic lofi YouTube channel that I'm
- 20:57constantly building up. I have stupid horror stories I
- 21:00write with my sister as a whole. That's a whole other podcast.
- 21:03I just, I love creating things and doing things.
- 21:06I get a lot of energy from that so.
- 21:10But you get a lot of energy from that.
- 21:12But it sounds like it's also maybe it's stress isn't the
- 21:15right word, but it also takes a lot out of you.
- 21:19Does it, doesn't it? Doesn't it take a lot out of
- 21:21everybody? Like we shouldn't be living with
- 21:23phones and e-mail and text messages, I don't think.
- 21:25So why would you even consider the six month sabbatical?
- 21:28But yes, because I find myself frequently overwhelmed by modern
- 21:31technology. I see, and I find that when I
- 21:34detach from that right. So for the last several years,
- 21:36except this year, I've taken all of August off of the Internet.
- 21:40Dave Rubin and I found out we were doing it at the same time.
- 21:42I don't think I heard about him doing it and he doesn't know
- 21:45what. He didn't know who I was at the
- 21:46time, so he certainly didn't do it because of me.
- 21:49But basically the end of July, I'd give my phone away and give
- 21:51my computers away, and I have no technology for the month and I
- 21:54just like that a lot. And so I would like to do more
- 21:57of that. So I don't know what that means
- 22:00being a YouTube. How, how do you, how does it
- 22:05look to be on YouTube and to also know that YouTube is maybe
- 22:09harming people? All the Internet, so much
- 22:13Internet, so much video media, social media.
- 22:16It's something I asked myself. I mean, I'm in the same.
- 22:18No, it's a, it's a good question.
- 22:19I mean, I, I've said in the past, don't listen to Pines with
- 22:22the Corners. Just go read.
- 22:24Go read a good book instead. You know, you'd be much better
- 22:26off. But then I've had some of my
- 22:28audience correct me and like, please don't say that.
- 22:30Like I came into the church because of your podcast.
- 22:32You have no idea how helpful this has been.
- 22:35Well, OK, well, thank you very much.
- 22:37So, but I think ideally, wouldn't that be a better life
- 22:42if you just walked around with your own thoughts in your head
- 22:44and prayed and read a book and you weren't glued to your
- 22:47screen? I will say when you.
- 22:48Didn't like, like when I go and work out, I'll work out like two
- 22:51or three times a week, sometimes more.
- 22:54It's not like CrossFit or anything.
- 22:56I go to the Y with the old Italian women, feel good about
- 23:00myself. But when I do that, I think
- 23:04sometimes I'm like, oh gosh, I'm out of battery on my earphones
- 23:07and I think, well, I can't work out.
- 23:08How am I going to work out without listening to music?
- 23:10It's like we've we've gotten to that.
- 23:12You know, I have to clean the kitchen, but I need a podcast.
- 23:15I don't want to. I don't want to be dependent on
- 23:18these sorts of things. You think?
- 23:19You think more people need silence?
- 23:21I think I'm very, I'm going to say something very praiseworthy
- 23:25about myself here that you can disagree with if you want.
- 23:28I think I'm feeling what everybody else should be
- 23:31feeling, and if they're not, they're wrong.
- 23:34I think that's what I think. They're feeling suffocated by
- 23:37the noise, yes. Yes.
- 23:40I do feel that way sometimes. Yes, everyone feels that way and
- 23:42they should feel that way. And if they don't feel that way,
- 23:44it's because they've killed their heart or they're in the
- 23:46process of poisoning it, like it's not natural.
- 23:51You know, these bloody phones, they have a little delivered
- 23:53sign, you know, you send a text to whoever and it says red and
- 23:58all. They now, and I know you can
- 23:59turn that off, but now they know you've read it and now you're
- 24:01waiting for a response. People text each other like
- 24:04they're speaking to. Each other in the same.
- 24:05Room. I know, I know you can, but a
- 24:07lot of people don't. And the whole point is to get
- 24:09you to respond quicker. It's like if I say to you how
- 24:12you doing and you don't say, yeah, pretty good.
- 24:14Within a short period of time, I'm like, something's wrong with
- 24:17you. We text that way to each other.
- 24:19I don't want to live like that. So I'm overwhelmed by that, not
- 24:23because there's something wrong with me, but because there's
- 24:25something wrong with modern technology.
- 24:27And we all have to realize that and just detach from the teat of
- 24:31Apple. Is there?
- 24:34Google. Is there a way to, should we
- 24:37try, do you think we should try to create a media apostolate
- 24:44empire sounds too, you know, I don't know, prideful.
- 24:48I don't know what it would sound too, but some sort of along the
- 24:52lines of what you're doing right?
- 24:54But to double down on that to reach people because there's so
- 24:57much nonsense out there. And again, back to what we were
- 24:59talking about earlier. And like people, you know, have
- 25:01been so impacted by your show. You know, people have come into
- 25:04the church. I know people who have been
- 25:05deeply impacted by your show and become Catholic because of pints
- 25:09with Aquinas, helping them along their journey.
- 25:12And obviously they were brought in through a priest and all
- 25:13this. But your show has been so
- 25:15instrumental for them and so clearly the Lord's using it.
- 25:19Do you think that if there was some combination of removing
- 25:24yourself from, you know, the city, so to speak, of noise,
- 25:28right? But then returning as the artist
- 25:30to contribute, but then having this really clear flow of I'm
- 25:34going to take the sabbatical. I'm going to turn off the
- 25:36lights, turn off the phones, whatever it is.
- 25:38But then I'm going to go intentionally create in this
- 25:40structure, kind of like a rhythm of creation that has a lot of
- 25:44order to it, but we haven't had historically because we have all
- 25:46this new technology. Sorry this is so long winded
- 25:49but. I love what you're saying.
- 25:51Do you think, do you think something like that has yet to
- 25:54be created? That if it were created, we
- 25:56could create a movement of people who are doing this, along
- 25:58with impacting many more souls. My fear is that the technology
- 26:03is quote UN quote, smarter than us.
- 26:05I don't mean that it's sentient or that it's actually smarter
- 26:07than us, but I mean that it hacks us in a way that we don't
- 26:10realize it hacks us. We like to think that we're the
- 26:14masters of these things, but we're, I think it's servants and
- 26:17the servants of Apple and these big corporations.
- 26:20And so I think we have to just acknowledge our dependence on
- 26:23these bloody things and and then act in a way that we think is
- 26:28best. I think it would be a good idea
- 26:31if I like, that's one of the things I've been doing for the
- 26:32last several years, right. All of August is off.
- 26:34That was a way that gave me some like tranquility and you know,
- 26:37and then some order throughout the year.
- 26:42Maybe I could create something individually where I take like a
- 26:45month, every other month off and I do other work, meaningful work
- 26:49that doesn't have to do with YouTube, but like YouTube and
- 26:52you'd probably realize this already having done this podcast
- 26:54for a while now. YouTube needs to make it as
- 26:57addictive for the creator as it does for the consumer.
- 27:00So all of that's beautiful stats and then the money that comes in
- 27:04through the clips and what works and helping you is all about
- 27:07keeping you hooked so. Have you been able to
- 27:12successfully bring in money just through YouTube without the
- 27:15other revenue streams? Because they seem.
- 27:18I mean I bring money in through YouTube but it wouldn't be
- 27:20enough. I got like 7 people who work for
- 27:22me in different capacities so. So you've got a a large team.
- 27:26I mean, yeah, I mean a. Large team.
- 27:28I guess I'm looking towards you. I mean, I'm sure there's
- 27:30podcasting. Some of them are part time too.
- 27:34Only two are full time really. And then different degrees of
- 27:38work. But so, yeah, if I if, if I, if
- 27:41I lost, I've lost everything else on the YouTube money, then
- 27:44I, I wouldn't be able to have people work for me.
- 27:47So I guess I don't make we could talk after about how much we
- 27:49make, but now. Just tell me now, all right?
- 27:51$15. $15.00 a month on YouTube? No as much.
- 27:55We're barely beating you. Yeah, so it's great, but I
- 27:58don't, I don't want to be subservient to it.
- 28:00And, and I just want to give a huge shout out to locals because
- 28:03I was with Patreon for the longest time.
- 28:06And then Patreon. Is it OK that we talk about
- 28:07this? Is this interesting?
- 28:08I I'm, it's interesting to me. Patreon started banning people,
- 28:11right? Really.
- 28:12Oh yeah, they started. Oh, banning creators?
- 28:14Yeah, of course. Moving their streams of income
- 28:18and that was when, if you remember, Jordan Peterson and
- 28:21Dave Rubin both had big accounts on Patreon and I think to their
- 28:24credit, both decided to pull the plug.
- 28:25They did a live stream. They deleted their accounts,
- 28:27losing a ton of money. And then Dave Rubin and some
- 28:31others helped create Locals. And with that, about a year
- 28:35later, the people at Locals were reaching out to me, trying to
- 28:37get me on their platform. And I just like whatever.
- 28:40It's just like another thing. People want something from you.
- 28:42They just want you to make money so they can make money.
- 28:45I, I, I'm not interested. So about it, I didn't want to
- 28:47confuse people. You got Patreon, you got locals,
- 28:49you got this thing. So I did nothing with it, but
- 28:52they were quite persistent and I started to get to know the folks
- 28:55at Locals and I'm like, wow, these are amazing people.
- 28:57So here's one significant difference between Patreon and
- 28:59Locals. If you quit Locals, which is a
- 29:03free speech platform that's committed to not banning people.
- 29:07If you quit Locals, the money comes directly to you through
- 29:10Stripe. Wow.
- 29:12Yeah. So I could leave Locals and just
- 29:14make 10% more than I'm making now if I want, but they make
- 29:17their platform so excellent that you would never do that.
- 29:23Yeah. So I I've only had great.
- 29:25Should we use? Locals instead of what?
- 29:27Patreon. 100% really. I think so.
- 29:32And what's great about locals too is, is they're not just
- 29:33catering to the right. They're like anyone who doesn't
- 29:36want to be banned, anyone who's for free speech, anyone who's
- 29:39tired of this big tech censorship, come here.
- 29:43Because even if we banned you, which we won't, you'll just make
- 29:46more money because we want you to be independent.
- 29:49So you're not dependent on us to make the money.
- 29:51It's also a much more holistic system.
- 29:53So whereas on Patreon you have to record a video on YouTube and
- 29:57then put an unlisted link on Patreon if you want only
- 30:00Patreons to see the thing you're posting, you can stream directly
- 30:03from locals. And now Locals and Rumble are in
- 30:06cahoots working together. So as Rumble grows, locals is
- 30:09growing. I have been thrilled.
- 30:12And I would say this too. People who are on my locals say
- 30:16it's it's amazing. I know that sounds like I'm just
- 30:19trying to but it's true because on locals you can't comment
- 30:23unless you're paying money. So a lot of the stuff I put on
- 30:26locals people can see but if they want to interact with me or
- 30:28my locals they have to be invested. 10 bucks a month,
- 30:32right? If someone's invested for 10
- 30:36bucks a month, they're not there to troll, probably.
- 30:39And So what you find on locals is what social media should have
- 30:42been but never was. And it's like people trying to
- 30:45give each other the benefit of the doubt, trying to understand
- 30:47each other, trying to be charitable.
- 30:49So real conversations are happening, yeah.
- 30:52And meaningful connections or dialogue.
- 30:54Is happening. Really.
- 30:55I don't. I can't say that's true of every
- 30:56local's account, but for mine it certainly seems to be.
- 31:01So I know there's a lot of it sounds like maybe ambivalence or
- 31:05you're kind of sorting through your next steps with some of
- 31:08this you've had, you've grown so much over the last few years and
- 31:12even this year I feel like you've you've the show has grown
- 31:14so much. What are some of the drivers?
- 31:17What do you mean of growth for you?
- 31:19How do you approach that? Because you you haven't.
- 31:21Been on Ben Shapiro? Show well, Ben.
- 31:23Ben. Shapiro bicycle on a sidewalk.
- 31:25That was a good video that. I saw that video did.
- 31:28It that was big. That was very well staged.
- 31:29So if if the IT was very funny. So for those who didn't see it's
- 31:34like a one minute video. I walk out of a shop and a
- 31:36electric bike is zooming past on the sidewalk and knocks me over
- 31:39and a a a camera on our cigar lounge at that Tunville caught
- 31:46it. And so we put it up and I said
- 31:48something like best caption wins.
- 31:50And this was just after my debate with Prager when someone
- 31:54said Prager sends his regards. Oh gosh.
- 31:57That was my favorite comment. Yeah.
- 31:59I don't know. I think, yeah, it's so tough.
- 32:04I think we all have to be honest about the fact that we want
- 32:07clicks, right? Like just we all have to stop
- 32:09pretending we don't want it, and we also have to stop pretending
- 32:12that we don't know what gets it. Like, I know it gets it, it gets
- 32:15it. It's news.
- 32:16Like whatever. The news.
- 32:17Something someone said. The Pope, The president.
- 32:20Of the day. Yeah, just do that.
- 32:21Dropping the name of the person that's in the news and talking
- 32:24about something about it. Now the algorithm's quite smart
- 32:26on YouTube. I'm just, I'm learning.
- 32:28I'm we gotta do news? The algorithm's quite smart.
- 32:31It's not just about how quickly you click on it, it's how long
- 32:33you watch it for. So it can't be clickbait.
- 32:35It has to intrigue people, keep them hooked, right?
- 32:38So you can figure that out. But it's like, well, all right,
- 32:41so I know now I know how to do that, and I know I have to play
- 32:43the game right because I want to grow the channel.
- 32:46Because like you, I do believe that the interviews and the
- 32:49people I have on are genuinely helping people in this very
- 32:51confused time. And you enjoy it.
- 32:54Earlier you were saying. But it is, it is a calling.
- 32:56It sounds like for you, it's not just that you love it, it's a
- 32:58sense of calling. Yeah, I think so.
- 33:00So I love it. I want to, I want to get the
- 33:02clicks. I want to grow the channel, but
- 33:04I also don't want to sell my soul like so if I go to Austria,
- 33:08I no doubt things are going to tank, but it's like, OK, So
- 33:10what? Am I just going to stay on this
- 33:11treadmill until I'm like 75? But it also might, I think
- 33:14there's a respect and, and, and, and like, I think the audience
- 33:18and your, your, your team, your folks.
- 33:19Like when you're away, there's a sense of excitement when you
- 33:22come back and you, you've learned something and maybe you
- 33:25have some Austrian sheep that you bring home.
- 33:27I don't know. You know, it could be great.
- 33:29So you never know. It's a.
- 33:31It's a change. But I don't think it has.
- 33:33See, that's why I don't think subscriptions matter.
- 33:35Subscribers don't matter at all. You know what I have?
- 33:38Like, I don't know how much I have, guys.
- 33:40Subscribers. Are 400 and something thousand?
- 33:42That doesn't matter at all. That's a lot.
- 33:43Yeah, it doesn't matter. If it like can I have some of
- 33:46them there but. It doesn't matter.
- 33:47It really doesn't matter because YouTube knows what you want to
- 33:50see more than you know what you want to see.
- 33:53So I mean how the the little click the subscribe and see if
- 33:57there's any latest videos. There's an afterthought on
- 33:59YouTube. When you go to YouTube, you see
- 34:01like a home page of the things YouTube knows that you want to
- 34:04watch. Really, that's what you When I
- 34:05go to my homepage, I see half the stuff I don't want to watch
- 34:08and I don't click on What's wrong with my algorithm.
- 34:11Well, I don't know, maybe I'm wrong but that.
- 34:13Might be I'm probably an outlier.
- 34:15Maybe you've got somebody else using your account and they're
- 34:17like watching up, they're watching things, but so.
- 34:21I'm like, how to make a salad dressing, You know?
- 34:23I'm just kidding. You guys aren't doing that.
- 34:24It's a weird time though, isn't it?
- 34:26To speak this much and have it all recorded and put out there.
- 34:29It's almost like like it's never been so easy to record and to
- 34:31publish and to reach a lot of people.
- 34:33It's almost like we've never needed to be more merciful with
- 34:37people than now because of how easy it is.
- 34:40It's not like you wrote a book and thought it.
- 34:42I mean, you did write a book, but it's not like if if I write
- 34:45a book and I think it through, this is my position and I can be
- 34:48like dragged over the calls for it.
- 34:50But in conversations like this, where you say things you maybe
- 34:54don't mean, like you misspeak and you say something you know,
- 34:57or you say something you're thinking through but haven't
- 35:01considered fully. It's kind of weird, yeah.
- 35:04Yeah, it's like, what kind of weight should I give to these
- 35:08offhanded remarks so. Well, I, I think about you
- 35:11mentioned you want to be a St. I do, but that's the end game.
- 35:13That's. Beautiful, yes.
- 35:15You will be, You will be. That's true.
- 35:17You will be even if you go through purgatory.
- 35:19Good, good, the good Lord will make me a St.
- 35:23Amen. And he is making me a St. and I
- 35:25love him. But you But do you also want to
- 35:28be a canonized St. I don't care about that.
- 35:30Really. That's good?
- 35:31Well. I hope I don't care about that.
- 35:33And if you don't think we should care about.
- 35:34That and shouldn't care about that.
- 35:35Then May God purify me of that too.
- 35:37Wow. But so no, I think it's.
- 35:42But but, but hold on, that's really because we're talking as
- 35:44Catholics. So obviously we are Catholics.
- 35:47But so you're saying you don't want to skip purgatory?
- 35:52Or you you you canonized St. means you skipped purgatory.
- 35:56No, it doesn't. No, it just means that you've
- 35:59been officially recognized As for the Church as one of the
- 36:03Blessed All. Right.
- 36:04You're educating me here because I thought that becoming a
- 36:06Catholic St. Yes.
- 36:07No, it doesn't mean. That canonized meant that you
- 36:10went straight to heaven. That's not my understanding and
- 36:12I don't think that's official Church teaching for those for
- 36:15those at home by purgatory. I I like to think of purgatory
- 36:18as that the, the final rush of our sanctification, right.
- 36:23So nothing unclean will enter heaven.
- 36:25And even after our initial salvation, we still find
- 36:29ourselves wounded by sin, attached to sin, tempted by sin.
- 36:33We know we won't be like that in heaven.
- 36:35How awful would that be? If you're in heaven but still
- 36:37felt wounded by sin and desired sin, OK, Therefore what happens?
- 36:42Well, there has to be something in between, you know, loving the
- 36:45Lord, but still wounded by and desired to and attached to sin
- 36:50and then not. And that's what we call
- 36:52purgatory. It's it's that cleansing fire of
- 36:56God's love that purifies us. And it could be a second, right
- 37:00I? Don't think the church has a has
- 37:01a stand on how time works in the afterlife.
- 37:04So Benedict, Pope Benedict before he was Pope Benedict, I
- 37:07think, seemed to side with the idea that it may, may, may not
- 37:11take any time, temporal duration at all.
- 37:13It might be just the encounter of God's love which purifies us
- 37:16in a moment. But then there are other there
- 37:20are other people who say differently, so I don't know.
- 37:23So you don't think then you don't have like a sense that you
- 37:27would want to have purgatory be as quick and short and you know,
- 37:32and there's I've heard as a Catholic, I've been told that
- 37:35you want to get as much purgatory in this life as
- 37:38possible, but you think that's not yes.
- 37:40And I. Think that's right like.
- 37:42You want, you want your sanctification.
- 37:44Like that's where again, I don't do this.
- 37:46This is what I need to work on. But it's like if suffering comes
- 37:48your way, if humiliation comes your way, whatever comes your
- 37:52way, or you impose it on yourself out of your own sin and
- 37:55foolishness, whatever my own sin and foolishness you like,
- 37:58embrace it to help yourself out for eternity, because it's part
- 38:02of your purification process that the Lord's allowing.
- 38:05But I like to. Think of it in the terms of
- 38:07becoming healthy, right? So a St. is someone who's fully
- 38:10healthy. In this analogy, sin makes you
- 38:12stupid and sick. In this life, you should wish to
- 38:15be more and more healthy and less and less stupid and sick.
- 38:18And so of course you should embrace what the Lord permits or
- 38:22what the Lord ordains for your life.
- 38:25Often we don't. But submitting to that and
- 38:27trusting that all that comes before us is because of His love
- 38:31for us, even though sometimes it feels very painful and unfair,
- 38:37it's makes us healthier so. I I haven't heard that before.
- 38:41I really like that, that view. It's a path to health in that
- 38:46way. I haven't heard that.
- 38:47Yes, it's becoming healthy. I mean, Thomas Aquinas talks
- 38:50about this a little bit in confession.
- 38:51You know, like you want to show the physician your wound.
- 38:55You don't go to the physician and cover up the thing that's
- 38:57really hurting. I mean, you can, but you'd be a
- 38:59fool. How does one even know they're
- 39:02hurting? Yeah, I like you a lot and I
- 39:06like your questions a great deal.
- 39:08How does one know that they're hurting?
- 39:09I how do I know that I'm hurting?
- 39:11Because I don't know how you know that you're hurting.
- 39:13I know that I'm hurting when I find that I'm angry or
- 39:18controlling or nitpicky or I cause grief to my loved ones.
- 39:25If I start doing that, I go, oh, what's going on?
- 39:28What place? Where are you coming from?
- 39:30Like what are you afraid of that you're angry that you're
- 39:32controlling, that you're nitpicky?
- 39:35What do you need to submit to the Lord Jesus?
- 39:37You know, that's the for me. That's how I know I'm hurting.
- 39:40Or if I'm just depressed, I know I'm hurting because of that.
- 39:43And So what do you do? Oh, I said, Lord Jesus, let
- 39:47there be light. Let there be light, You know,
- 39:51let me see where I'm what I'm afraid of.
- 39:54What am I believing that's false?
- 39:56That I need to renounce, that I need to let go of Lord Jesus, in
- 40:00your name. I renounce the lie.
- 40:04Let's say that I have to have it all together for you to love me.
- 40:09I renounce that lie in the name of Jesus, and I announce the
- 40:13truth that you are my loving Father, that you desire my
- 40:20salvation, that by Christ's death and resurrection you have
- 40:24opened heaven under my feet. I am the apple of your eye.
- 40:29You look at me with inexpressible tenderness and
- 40:33there's nothing I can do about it, that kind of thing.
- 40:36So it's renouncing those. Like you need to close the
- 40:38podcast. That was that was good.
- 40:42See I need to get more Matt Freddy with my interviewing
- 40:44because I will be honest I have like when I interview I have
- 40:47like 5 questions that pop into my head while the person's
- 40:50talking. That's beautiful though.
- 40:51Just be you and. Then some of them I really want
- 40:53to ask and I want to save. But then you're right, you lose
- 40:56attention towards the rest of what they're talking if you're
- 40:58really trying to remember your question.
- 40:59So that's where the notepad. Came out.
- 41:00I think that's right because I heard Dave Rubin do interviews
- 41:03in the past back when he did them and someone would bring
- 41:05something up too early for him and he'd be like, oh, we're
- 41:08going to get to that. And I never like that.
- 41:09I like trusting the flow of the conversation and rather that I
- 41:13think it's better for me in my format, I would rather go with
- 41:17the flow of the conversation then feel the need to like, stop
- 41:21there. We're going to do this now.
- 41:22But what if it doesn't enter back into the flow?
- 41:24Like the part the question that you had that didn't get answered
- 41:26was earlier in the conversation made more sense earlier.
- 41:29You've already flowed to this beautiful prayer that you just
- 41:31prayed. And you go with that.
- 41:33You don't have to go back. You know, so you just don't go
- 41:35back. You just don't go back.
- 41:36Yeah, but I really wanted to. Well then go back, especially if
- 41:39it wraps up right. OK.
- 41:40Yeah, well, I'll do. What you want to do, This is the
- 41:43one point I want to make. I once spoke to a friend of
- 41:45mine, his name is Chris Stefanik.
- 41:46And he's he's wonderful. I was giving, I was asking him
- 41:50to give me advice because I was giving a lot more talks than I
- 41:52used to. And he said, please don't try to
- 41:55be Jason Everett. Please don't try to be Doctor
- 41:57Scott Hahn. Go up there and be big goofy
- 41:59you. And I'm like, what the hell big
- 42:02awkward you is? I think what he said.
- 42:04I think that's the best advice. Just everyone else has taken
- 42:07Just be you with all of your little what's the word?
- 42:12Eccentricity. Yes, that word, it's a hard word
- 42:14to say. All of that, you know, just just
- 42:17be you. And then if people don't like
- 42:19it, then they don't have to watch.
- 42:20OK, but. These people will be like, well,
- 42:22I like Lila, so I want her to be.
- 42:23Maybe my mom, she she definitely watches and my sister-in-law to
- 42:26give me advice. OK, so the question I had is
- 42:30when you're choosing, how do you select the guest to interview?
- 42:33People I'm interested in talking to.
- 42:35And how do you pick who not to talk to?
- 42:37People I'm not interested in talking to.
- 42:39And I have people asking me daily.
- 42:42I get emails, Instagram messages daily, daily, multiple people.
- 42:46Which good for them. I mean, I'm sure they're
- 42:48wonderful, but if I don't want to talk to you, then it won't be
- 42:52a great conversation. And maybe you could argue that I
- 42:54should want to talk to everybody because everybody has something
- 42:57to say, but I don't want to. That's such a freeing way to
- 43:00look at. Things, yeah.
- 43:01I would rather have just a nice conversation than chat with
- 43:04someone who's brilliant but doesn't know how to have a
- 43:06conversation, you know? That's really, really good
- 43:08advice, Matt. Any other good advice?
- 43:13I don't know, I don't think so. Any other good advice?
- 43:19I think it's like as soon as you wanna, as soon as I am doing
- 43:24this for a reason other than I just wanna do it, I think
- 43:28everyone will start to feel it. Like if I'm doing episodes,
- 43:30'cause I gotta, I gotta promote this advertiser and I gotta get
- 43:33another one in and, and that becomes the, that's the main
- 43:36reason we keep. It's like people know they feel
- 43:39it. I don't ever want to do that.
- 43:42I just want to. I want to do it because I want
- 43:43to do it. OK, so this could be a nice
- 43:45place to end if you want. John Eldridge wrote a book
- 43:48called Wild at Heart. You you like that book?
- 43:50Love the book. Really.
- 43:51Yes. What's your favorite thing about
- 43:53it? I'll tell you, OK, At the end he
- 43:55said something that you touched upon earlier.
- 43:57He says don't ask yourself what the world needs.
- 44:00Ask yourself what makes me come fully alive.
- 44:03And then go do that because what the world needs is men who have
- 44:06become fully alive. I'm not saying that Pines with
- 44:10the guides makes me come fully alive, but I do love it.
- 44:13I love talking to people. I love having a big audience
- 44:17here. Wonderful stories like you with
- 44:19all your great work that you've done, and God bless you.
- 44:21And I love doing that so. That's great.
- 44:24Yeah, but as soon as it's not about, I love it and it's about.
- 44:28It's a chore. Yeah, it's about money.
- 44:30Like I want money. I want more of it.
- 44:32I want a lot more of it because the more I get more people I can
- 44:36hire, other things we can do. I I love the journey but if it
- 44:39becomes about that and not just the joy of having wonderful
- 44:42conversations then. So if that that quote, it's a
- 44:45beautiful concept, you know, do what makes you come fully alive.
- 44:50But there's a lot of things that are in life that feel like a
- 44:54chore, no? Yeah, fair enough.
- 44:57You know, I it would make me come fully alive if I just left
- 44:59my children and just. It's like board a cabin in the
- 45:02woods. I don't feel, I will be fully
- 45:05honest, I do not feel fully alive.
- 45:07I guess in a very deep spiritual sense, maybe I do actually.
- 45:10But certainly physically and mentally, I do not feel fully
- 45:13alive at 4:00 AM when my little 1 is up for the fifth time.
- 45:17Just like asking for a cup of milk, you know?
- 45:20Right. So I guess I mean to, to be fair
- 45:22to this quotation, I don't think it's an invitation to hedonism.
- 45:26I think it, I think what it's saying is at your, at the core
- 45:29of who you are. You know, when all the pretence
- 45:32has been stripped away and you can be sober and honest, what
- 45:36kind of person do you wanna be? And obviously you wanna be the
- 45:40kind of person who gets up at 4:00 AM even when you don't want
- 45:42to. That's.
- 45:43True, and you will be the. Person who loves your husband
- 45:46well. Who do you wanna be, Matt?
- 45:48I wanna, who do I, I wanna be? I want to be at Saint Matt.
- 45:52Fred, if God wanted you to be Mother Teresa, he would have
- 45:55made you Mother Teresa. And if you wanted me to be Padre
- 45:57Pier, he would have made me Padre Pier.
- 45:58For whatever reason, he decided to make the knucklehead that I
- 46:01am and your beautiful self who you are.
- 46:04And I just, I want to be the full flowering of who God wants
- 46:07me to be. But not canonized.
- 46:09I would love to be canonized if the Lord would allow it, but and
- 46:14if we are canonized, it's all because of his work.
- 46:16Like it's all because of him. So.
- 46:18But I think, is it true though, that there are some Saints in
- 46:20heaven that have more bliss maybe than even the canonized
- 46:23ones? And you?
- 46:24Are more blessed. Yeah, and that no one has ever
- 46:26heard their name on Earth. Oh, sure.
- 46:31Thanks Matt. How can people find your work?
