- 1:30Speaker 1: on behalf of Forhees College, The Dream of Thon Joe
- 1:33Speaker 1: Marie Payton, Hello, we'll going good. First of all, you
- 1:40Speaker 1: know no you stay in. I let me tell you something.
- 1:46Speaker 1: I do eat a lot of dessert, So I scare
- 1:48Speaker 1: people because I'm a dessert before my dinner. I'm award
- 1:52Speaker 1: winning baker Joe Marie May And I know that if
- 1:54Speaker 1: you follow my foes Facebook, you get hungry because I
- 1:57Speaker 1: love the post food my staff yesterday for my staff.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Because I just bought a new building in Atlanta. I'm
- 2:02Speaker 1: very proud of say that life has been good to
- 2:05Speaker 1: thank you, and I made them, uh some of college green.
- 2:08Speaker 1: This is in my office now because I have a
- 2:09Speaker 1: four kitchen at my office. College greens with corn bread.
- 2:13Speaker 1: I served in this college greens of corn bread, red
- 2:15Speaker 1: beans or white rice. And then I had some for
- 2:18Speaker 1: heta strips chicken and beef. And then I had some
- 2:22Speaker 1: flower tortillas. That those are options. They can have a
- 2:24Speaker 1: little Mexican feasts with sal creams, mixed cheese, uh, some
- 2:29Speaker 1: pika the gao. So I'm just telling how I reash
- 2:34Speaker 1: on mcdonn rose in Atlanta, Georgia. When you come down here,
- 2:36Speaker 1: you're gonna know you're gonna a meal can be served.
- 2:38Speaker 1: So if you come interviewed to Joe Marie, if you
- 2:41Speaker 1: come by my office you say I'm hungry, you're talking
- 2:44Speaker 1: to the wrong person because I can deliver down to
- 2:54Speaker 1: a little bit more about to stop here. What you
- 2:59Speaker 1: do we gonna, Joe Mury, what you ain't gonna do?
- 3:03Speaker 1: I know we're doing the stream. I thought you're not
- 3:05Speaker 1: gonna come on my little show, money making conversation and
- 3:08Speaker 1: use the word throw down. You know I would, Joe Murray.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I'm legendary. I am on Facebook. People knew I walked
- 3:16Speaker 1: through the airport. They might know you to be a
- 3:18Speaker 1: television dog singer finger. People say, Mr Baker, Mr Baker.
- 3:24Speaker 1: That's they don't even know me. They don't even know
- 3:25Speaker 1: I do motivation on money, make conversation, Mr Baker, Mr Baker,
- 3:30Speaker 1: and so so I'm just letting you know, Mr Baker,
- 3:34Speaker 1: Mr Baker, that's what they called me, Mr Baker. So
- 3:36Speaker 1: when you say the word throw down, it really kind
- 3:38Speaker 1: of offends me because it makes because you don't know
- 3:41Speaker 1: who you're talking to. You don't know who you're talking to.
- 3:43Speaker 1: And so so I was throwing I was throwing back
- 3:46Speaker 1: to you, classy, but I had to step to you.
- 3:48Speaker 1: I step to you. That's step So Joe Mury, okay,
- 3:54Speaker 1: you the chair? How did all that come about? Beforehead?
- 3:57Speaker 1: I know you're a graduate of Alabama State College, which
- 4:00Speaker 1: is an hbc U. For He's is an HBCU as well.
- 4:04Speaker 1: We all know a lot of donations were given out
- 4:06Speaker 1: during this year to UH a lot of the colleges
- 4:09Speaker 1: and a lot of it's a hundred and four HBCU colleges.
- 4:13Speaker 1: So a lot of people know don't know that donation
- 4:15Speaker 1: didn't spread to every college. So why did you become
- 4:18Speaker 1: a part of this and when did you step on board? Well,
- 4:21Speaker 1: you know something with Shawn, I don't know, maybe for
- 4:24Speaker 1: the last thirty years or so. I got out there, Uh,
- 4:29Speaker 1: supporting all the you know HBCUs. But my main, my,
- 4:35Speaker 1: my main one, my baby was always holding State where
- 4:38Speaker 1: that's my homecome and uh because I was born like
- 4:43Speaker 1: my mom and dad and my family, and I want
- 4:44Speaker 1: to get back. So it actually started there. So I
- 4:47Speaker 1: was with all Benish State I think ten years pretty
- 4:50Speaker 1: much ten years but jen years Delta Airlines with do
- 4:55Speaker 1: they like ten first class tickets and I would fly
- 4:57Speaker 1: my friends and Tim Reid, Don Lewis reaching my home
- 5:01Speaker 1: from the maddest cast. Everybody would come in and we
- 5:03Speaker 1: will leave that Friday morning, fly in and we would
- 5:08Speaker 1: be there that Saturday, and we got on that Sunday.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Were a whole weekend a fundraising to raise college funds
- 5:16Speaker 1: and I personally myself always gave away four stolarships, two
- 5:20Speaker 1: mails and two females. But it actually started with me.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I'm one of nine kids. I'm the oldest daughter, and
- 5:27Speaker 1: uh I had six brothers and two sisters. But I
- 5:29Speaker 1: remember two and one and I remember in nine when
- 5:33Speaker 1: I graduated here mine because I was raising home. All
- 5:36Speaker 1: my friends say went off to college, they went to
- 5:38Speaker 1: family and who cooked running. You know, those are the
- 5:41Speaker 1: schools coming from mind and those of na. We didn't
- 5:44Speaker 1: have Carda Memorial at that time. Florida Memorial came Leya
- 5:47Speaker 1: that's already storical. Come tree here. And I remember standing
- 5:50Speaker 1: under my in front of my my mom's house, under
- 5:53Speaker 1: the tree house prime like a lady. I wanted to
- 5:56Speaker 1: go to college so bad. I did not know what
- 5:58Speaker 1: to do. But I'm amazon wellfare and she was raising
- 6:02Speaker 1: us by herself. And I went in the house cried,
- 6:04Speaker 1: and I promised my mother. I said, if I ever
- 6:06Speaker 1: picked up point, I'm gonna listen to school, she said,
- 6:10Speaker 1: and I said yes. She said, well I can, I said,
- 6:12Speaker 1: for the none of us in one year, I said,
- 6:14Speaker 1: because you should not give you think it too not
- 6:16Speaker 1: be when you can't go to school because you don't
- 6:18Speaker 1: have the running to go to school. You know, I
- 6:20Speaker 1: wanted to go. I know my start. I was talented,
- 6:23Speaker 1: and strangely them not. I was offered a scholarship uh
- 6:26Speaker 1: in art, but I did not know and my mother
- 6:29Speaker 1: did not know that that's where the ever fire comes in.
- 6:31Speaker 1: You gotta know you gotta go to those those um
- 6:34Speaker 1: but when they had the such the summits and all
- 6:36Speaker 1: that stuff, I just have to go with kids especially
- 6:38Speaker 1: don't know. My mother didn't know it. I didn't know
- 6:40Speaker 1: even I could have gone into college or that scholars
- 6:42Speaker 1: shaking switch lad. I didn't know that. So there's a
- 6:45Speaker 1: lot of stuff I didn't know. All I did know
- 6:48Speaker 1: was that I was on a mission to make sure
- 6:52Speaker 1: that not one kid who wanted to go to school
- 6:56Speaker 1: would feel like that wealth pact. And so chen led
- 7:01Speaker 1: to twenty hundred and I think the last time of
- 7:05Speaker 1: matter about being about two something like that. But I
- 7:08Speaker 1: tell them what I give you I called a jump stuff.
- 7:12Speaker 1: And I can't go out there and give you all
- 7:13Speaker 1: that money like all the mother folks, But I would
- 7:15Speaker 1: give me five thousand dollars or four dollars dars. Get
- 7:18Speaker 1: you in there. Once you get in there, and you
- 7:20Speaker 1: find out where the rest of that money is, because
- 7:21Speaker 1: there's some more money in there. You got you got
- 7:26Speaker 1: look for it. And then on troll of that, when
- 7:27Speaker 1: you get in there, you make sure that we don't
- 7:31Speaker 1: have to douvel up on you because you didn't pass
- 7:33Speaker 1: a class. You get in there, you better pass every
- 7:37Speaker 1: class there is now strange steing up. I'm gonna tell
- 7:40Speaker 1: you something. I work with Dr Frience Brown because Dr
- 7:43Speaker 1: Prince Brown was at all in the state at that time,
- 7:45Speaker 1: and I think Dr Brownson was was the president there.
- 7:48Speaker 1: But I worked also with family when I worked with
- 7:50Speaker 1: Don Cook Money, I worked with Texas Southern, I work
- 7:53Speaker 1: with UM Virginia Union, all of them. I've been on
- 7:56Speaker 1: all the campuses and stuff. So for me, it's it's
- 7:59Speaker 1: gonna always be a heart prod for me, you know,
- 8:04Speaker 1: to make sure that anybody that really wants to go
- 8:06Speaker 1: to school, I want to continue their education can do that.
- 8:11Speaker 1: And I know that Boies along with all the other hbcs,
- 8:16Speaker 1: they need the funds. They always need the funds, you know.
- 8:20Speaker 1: In this era that we're in now, with this COVID
- 8:22Speaker 1: nineteen and stuff, a lot of things have changed now
- 8:24Speaker 1: we're in a new normal. So I'm not specific about
- 8:28Speaker 1: exactly what it is they need. I just know that
- 8:32Speaker 1: they need the funds to get whatever it is because
- 8:35Speaker 1: I don't know what the studies are, what all the
- 8:37Speaker 1: main studies are now because our world has changed and
- 8:40Speaker 1: we are virtually in a virtual world with a lot
- 8:42Speaker 1: of technology going on. So I'm assuming that we need
- 8:45Speaker 1: technical equipment. We need we we need um professors and
- 8:51Speaker 1: the features were like their work. We need administrators that
- 8:54Speaker 1: can come in back and teach that. They have to
- 8:56Speaker 1: have salaries, then have labs, you know, and we have
- 8:59Speaker 1: to have even promotional money because we have to make
- 9:03Speaker 1: a kid excited about right right, excited about achievement, excited
- 9:08Speaker 1: about being a part of where we are now in
- 9:10Speaker 1: the world we are, and we need the engineers. We
- 9:13Speaker 1: need people looking look at the wonderful people that went
- 9:16Speaker 1: up in space. Look at they asked them, look at them,
- 9:18Speaker 1: and look at the first state work. You know, we
- 9:20Speaker 1: we we need scientists and doctors, well COVID others. We
- 9:24Speaker 1: need a lot of doctors. Right, so were profession We're
- 9:27Speaker 1: in a new parent, new normal. So and it's not
- 9:31Speaker 1: supposed to stop learning. It's not supposed to stop right.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Let mess you this told you was bragging about nine kids,
- 9:37Speaker 1: nine sisters, nine kids children. I come from a family
- 9:40Speaker 1: of nine Okay, six sisters, two brothers. See again, Joe Marie.
- 9:43Speaker 1: But you're not gonna come on my show each other upstage.
- 9:46Speaker 1: You know, we're saying, you know you you were through
- 9:47Speaker 1: that nine. I like it was gonna be a number
- 9:50Speaker 1: that was gonna be matched. I can match that. You know,
- 9:53Speaker 1: my parents, they was out there populating too. They will
- 9:55Speaker 1: populate to okay. But it's a lovely thing. It's a
- 9:58Speaker 1: lovely thing, you know. And I'll only have one daughter,
- 10:01Speaker 1: and I never forget. My daughter came off from Pope.
- 10:03Speaker 1: She was going to be you at the time, started
- 10:06Speaker 1: going to school, that's where she was going late and
- 10:08Speaker 1: she came up a fake skitter. That's a fake that's
- 10:11Speaker 1: like right now when this time and I met at
- 10:13Speaker 1: the airport, and now I'm so happy to see it
- 10:14Speaker 1: because she was, like I said, she's my only count three,
- 10:16Speaker 1: three thousand miles away trying to be with me. But
- 10:19Speaker 1: she jumped on my father. She said, Mama, what does
- 10:22Speaker 1: it feel like to have brothers and sisters? And my
- 10:25Speaker 1: heart spipped to be I felt so bad, I said,
- 10:29Speaker 1: it feels wonderful. It's it's jan tell is well, she said,
- 10:32Speaker 1: because every time something happened, I'm for Michael, I'm afraid,
- 10:35Speaker 1: but lcome, Tommy Ulco, Johnny. I just says, everybody just
- 10:37Speaker 1: speaks together. She said, I remember we needed to take
- 10:40Speaker 1: the house, and you guys take the house playing a
- 10:41Speaker 1: three hours because everybody take and take it. So that
- 10:44Speaker 1: kind of thing. But my heart stipped to be and
- 10:47Speaker 1: I felt really bad because my mom had said to
- 10:49Speaker 1: have two kids, and I was busy in my career.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Along with the fact that I had just station of
- 10:54Speaker 1: diabetes when I had her, I just didn't want to
- 10:56Speaker 1: go there. But if I had to regret something in
- 10:59Speaker 1: my life, that would be the one thing that I
- 11:01Speaker 1: would regret. Yeah, I didn't have another child. Well I can.
- 11:05Speaker 1: I can agree with you absolutely, Yeah, like that two
- 11:15Speaker 1: open in college, you know, and I can agree. Like
- 11:18Speaker 1: I said, I come from a big family. Uh my parents.
- 11:21Speaker 1: My father the truck driver, you know, third grade education,
- 11:24Speaker 1: mom graduate of high school. And we lived in a
- 11:27Speaker 1: two bedroom shotgun house. You know, That's what I was
- 11:30Speaker 1: going in. I was born in that and so and
- 11:32Speaker 1: so my whole thing. I have one daughter, just like you.
- 11:35Speaker 1: We we have such a strong kinship. It's amazing. They
- 11:38Speaker 1: have to bring all this out in the conversation and
- 11:41Speaker 1: and so and I've had that I wish I could
- 11:43Speaker 1: have given. But I was tied up traveling because I
- 11:46Speaker 1: started out in his career as a stand up comedian,
- 11:48Speaker 1: So I was always on the road before I started
- 11:50Speaker 1: writing sitcoms and family. You know, I wrote, I wrote
- 11:54Speaker 1: The Parenthood, I wrote Sister Sister, Uh, I wrote Jamie
- 12:00Speaker 1: Fox Show, The Parkers, and then starting manager Steve Steve
- 12:04Speaker 1: Harvard two thousand and the rest is history from that
- 12:06Speaker 1: standpord of me being producing and doing a lot of
- 12:09Speaker 1: high profile events. But one thing, I didn't go to
- 12:12Speaker 1: an hbc U school. But I've always had a kinship
- 12:15Speaker 1: for creating change and also giving people, uh information. This
- 12:18Speaker 1: was just about information. There's a stream of thought theforehes
- 12:21Speaker 1: is having us to promote and like I said, it's
- 12:23Speaker 1: air today, but December second, which is just in the first,
- 12:27Speaker 1: which is Tuesdays, the actual stream of thought. And we're
- 12:29Speaker 1: trying to raise a million dollars and and we're using
- 12:32Speaker 1: our skills so popular we're gonna get it. And I know,
- 12:36Speaker 1: like I said, Don Lewis has been participating in this,
- 12:40Speaker 1: killing Mikeets participating this, but car Sellers is participating, and
- 12:43Speaker 1: you're the chair Joe Marie paidon. So so we got
- 12:46Speaker 1: the queen, the queen, the queen so so so you know,
- 12:50Speaker 1: you know your country just like me. Because I was
- 12:52Speaker 1: born in Houston, Texas. I'm still in Atlanta, Georgiana. I
- 12:54Speaker 1: may have lived in New York, Chicago, l A. But
- 12:57Speaker 1: I'm a country boy. I love but now I'm putting
- 13:01Speaker 1: I love great things that right. I can actually cook
- 13:04Speaker 1: corn bread. I like to throw a little sweet corn
- 13:07Speaker 1: in there sometimes, you know, just just to mess it
- 13:09Speaker 1: up a little bit. But so let's go back to
- 13:12Speaker 1: the third out statement that you had, Joe Mrie, because well,
- 13:15Speaker 1: this is what we're gonna do, because we got zoom
- 13:17Speaker 1: now Joe Marie, and so I already told you I
- 13:20Speaker 1: gotta kitchen in my office. Okay, So one day it's
- 13:23Speaker 1: gonna be soon, maybe before the end of the year.
- 13:26Speaker 1: We're gonna zoom you in the kitchen. I'm gonna be
- 13:29Speaker 1: in my office kitchen and we're gonna do a meal together.
- 13:32Speaker 1: You know, your version of red beans, right, or your
- 13:35Speaker 1: version of corn bread, or your version of whenever your
- 13:39Speaker 1: version is ru Sean McDonald can match it? How about that? Cool? Okay? Cool?
- 13:45Speaker 1: Look what if we're challenging? Okay, So I just did
- 13:48Speaker 1: a video with a girlfriend of mine who's the filmmaker,
- 13:51Speaker 1: and I did a video project that I'm thinking about
- 13:54Speaker 1: watching and I did my daughter, my granddaughter rather and
- 13:59Speaker 1: my granddaughter's well, she did her version of ricks and
- 14:02Speaker 1: I did my versions. But my show that's called something
- 14:09Speaker 1: thinking of good stuff. What they said, you said, you
- 14:12Speaker 1: put it out or put it out in the universe,
- 14:14Speaker 1: and they're gonna happen. Okay, So so tell us about
- 14:17Speaker 1: this this this this cookie show. Because I'm a foodie.
- 14:21Speaker 1: I'm a food fanatic. Okay, I love Look. I got
- 14:25Speaker 1: a little segment on my Facebook called rushaun eats different
- 14:28Speaker 1: places I went around the country to eat, just throwing
- 14:30Speaker 1: people love because I got like it was a million followers.
- 14:32Speaker 1: So I just post people free just to give them
- 14:34Speaker 1: hype and give them some respect, especially the black restaurants.
- 14:38Speaker 1: They need all the love they can get. So so,
- 14:40Speaker 1: so you just threw out stripping drips. Okay, okay, I'm
- 14:44Speaker 1: a great man, said everybody. I love me some grits. Okay,
- 14:48Speaker 1: So not with sugar though, I'm waller, you streight, you
- 14:58Speaker 1: stream country just like me. I don't know anybody says
- 15:03Speaker 1: sugar ingridge to me need to be slapped. I really,
- 15:07Speaker 1: I'm just taln't care if you I'm not being offended anybody,
- 15:11Speaker 1: but greach need if you if you really get in
- 15:13Speaker 1: a country, some of that bacon grease you pour on
- 15:16Speaker 1: top of the grids. Okay, that way, you don't need
- 15:19Speaker 1: to salt and pepper. Just put some bacon grease. Or
- 15:22Speaker 1: you can be cool. Just put some butter pepper, salt. Huh,
- 15:27Speaker 1: get that bad part right and you're done. You're done.
- 15:34Speaker 1: I love it. She went from alby Opa Locka, Florida,
- 15:39Speaker 1: going back to what you said. You know, I going
- 15:42Speaker 1: back to college and funding and all that kind of stuff.
- 15:45Speaker 1: I remember I was doing fund raising for want of
- 15:48Speaker 1: the university, and when I went in to speak with
- 15:52Speaker 1: them a bottom and down, I found out that they
- 15:56Speaker 1: had got a donation to do it, a million dollar
- 16:01Speaker 1: in diamond to Dona to preserve the black cooking stock.
- 16:06Speaker 1: I asked them if I could go out and tell
- 16:08Speaker 1: my children that it was there. They say, the absolutely,
- 16:11Speaker 1: But you know something we that to eat and with
- 16:14Speaker 1: all the stuff going on right and the back stores
- 16:18Speaker 1: that that's where we're going to the other side of
- 16:21Speaker 1: there is something for everybody. That's what we get in
- 16:25Speaker 1: our regular general education, saying that they can some of
- 16:30Speaker 1: the some of the the highest paid restaurants in the
- 16:32Speaker 1: world are chefs and they've got just the ones that
- 16:35Speaker 1: are any big restaurants that it wants to do a
- 16:38Speaker 1: lot of testing and all this stuff there was that
- 16:40Speaker 1: probably prepared along with scientists, the food for the astronauts,
- 16:44Speaker 1: forces or what there gets a job, a responsibility or duty.
- 16:49Speaker 1: I love everybody, and sometimes you just gotta go beyond
- 16:56Speaker 1: your your your basic education. And that's why we need
- 17:00Speaker 1: to make sure that we keep fonds available for these
- 17:03Speaker 1: kids to going through these schools here, but also the
- 17:07Speaker 1: university's college universities have to come up to hear. Also,
- 17:10Speaker 1: I don't know what they're doing right now. Years ago
- 17:12Speaker 1: I kind a new head of general idea of what
- 17:15Speaker 1: the studies were and what was requiring this set the other.
- 17:18Speaker 1: But I'm sure that things have changed now. If they
- 17:21Speaker 1: haven't changed as much, then they need to change much more,
- 17:25Speaker 1: come up to where we need to be technically, scientifically, medically,
- 17:30Speaker 1: and all that other stuff. And so that's why I
- 17:33Speaker 1: agree to continue and I probably will always do in
- 17:36Speaker 1: some some way on some level, to always try to
- 17:39Speaker 1: help some young person and even some mature person, because
- 17:43Speaker 1: I remember there was a time I gave up scholarships
- 17:46Speaker 1: to to uh some young people, and we were at
- 17:50Speaker 1: the ceremony, and then I wanted the young people took
- 17:52Speaker 1: part of their money and shared it. This was a
- 17:55Speaker 1: female of Ethnomer female. She asked me though, she said,
- 17:59Speaker 1: miss pay, would you mind if I gave half of
- 18:01Speaker 1: my scholarship money to my friend? And she has two
- 18:05Speaker 1: kids and she wants to come to school. I ain't
- 18:07Speaker 1: no problem with that. Almost broke with your tears. Then
- 18:09Speaker 1: by the same token, there was another young man who
- 18:13Speaker 1: was finishing up his last year and he's still at
- 18:16Speaker 1: funds and and he asked me it would be all
- 18:19Speaker 1: right if he passed his funds onto somebody's. It just
- 18:23Speaker 1: it just took my heart. You know, I don't I
- 18:26Speaker 1: don't ever ask anybody to give me anything back. And
- 18:28Speaker 1: maren't too much anybody could give me, because first of all,
- 18:31Speaker 1: God bless me with He blessed me the ability to
- 18:35Speaker 1: know the difference between rich and poort. You ain't got
- 18:37Speaker 1: nothing to do with what's in my pocket, Okay, It
- 18:40Speaker 1: has to deal with in my my heart and my
- 18:41Speaker 1: soul and stuff. Because I can become a millionaire amount
- 18:44Speaker 1: a millionaire today in the morrow, but I could be
- 18:48Speaker 1: sick and not be if they enjoy that. And uh,
- 18:50Speaker 1: my richness and my value comes in and my spirit
- 18:55Speaker 1: and my belief and understanding that I'm not responsible for anything,
- 19:00Speaker 1: but how I treat people, how do I let people
- 19:03Speaker 1: treat me? And who I believe in, not believing him?
- 19:06Speaker 1: And you take scare of me. So he makes sure
- 19:08Speaker 1: that I don't get caught up in anything except what's
- 19:11Speaker 1: necessary and what's available, and also what's important to people.
- 19:15Speaker 1: I love it when I see people progress. I love
- 19:18Speaker 1: it when I see young people good doing things that
- 19:20Speaker 1: their hearts designed. It makes me feel good. If that's
- 19:24Speaker 1: the kind of stuff that will make you take the
- 19:26Speaker 1: shirt off your back and give it to him, that's
- 19:28Speaker 1: the kind of stuff to say. If you take this,
- 19:29Speaker 1: you're gonna use this because I know you're gonna put
- 19:31Speaker 1: it to good use, because you understand that I ain't
- 19:34Speaker 1: just about you. You want to be a contributor to
- 19:36Speaker 1: the world in some way that's lasting, that's ever lasting.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Although you won't be here and it's time, you want
- 19:42Speaker 1: to be able to contribute and leave something. That's why
- 19:45Speaker 1: we need people to donate to these colleges. That's why
- 19:49Speaker 1: we need the money for those who have that passion.
- 19:52Speaker 1: And I always tell people, they're not a lot of
- 19:54Speaker 1: people anyway. You are going to have an opportunity in
- 19:57Speaker 1: this life because we really really under of the service
- 20:01Speaker 1: of somebody that's so powerful, and that's so awesome. Until
- 20:03Speaker 1: you're gonna have the opportunity to maybe have three careers.
- 20:08Speaker 1: One thirty your life, you're gonna spend doing something that
- 20:11Speaker 1: maybe you don't like to do it, but you're good
- 20:12Speaker 1: at it, so you make a lot of money. But
- 20:15Speaker 1: then you are spare one thirty your life doing something
- 20:17Speaker 1: that you love it so much. You're here for free,
- 20:21Speaker 1: that's yours. And then he wants to be on one
- 20:23Speaker 1: thirty your life flow then saying well I'm not. Well,
- 20:25Speaker 1: I'm gonna do that because that's life. And we said awesome,
- 20:30Speaker 1: So you got an opportunity to do that. So the
- 20:32Speaker 1: young people that have a heart desire to do something
- 20:36Speaker 1: or to be a contributor in a special way, that's
- 20:39Speaker 1: the kind of person I really want to push. That's
- 20:41Speaker 1: the kind of person that I really want to beg Oh,
- 20:43Speaker 1: I'll bet for some stop shipping money, I'll bet for
- 20:46Speaker 1: some investment money. I'll beg for that kind of person.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Because I know that what they want is coming from
- 20:52Speaker 1: deep inside and they feel it like that because they
- 20:56Speaker 1: can put it out like that because they know it's
- 20:58Speaker 1: not just for there. You listen to Joe Marie Payton
- 21:02Speaker 1: and this is the Vorhees stream of thon Hype Show.
- 21:05Speaker 1: And when I say Hype Show today on Sunday, we're
- 21:07Speaker 1: just hyping it because December the first, that's Tuesday, the
- 21:11Speaker 1: actual stream of through will happen where our goal is
- 21:13Speaker 1: to raises. She said it. We're gonna raise one million dollars,
- 21:16Speaker 1: but we need your help to raise that one million
- 21:18Speaker 1: dollars because we motivated the big create change and HPCU
- 21:22Speaker 1: HBCUs have been pushed out into the into the light
- 21:25Speaker 1: because of President elect Kamala Harris, the vice president, like
- 21:29Speaker 1: Kamala Harris, is a graduate of HBCU and a member
- 21:32Speaker 1: of the A K A sorority. Just add more and
- 21:35Speaker 1: more to add more black. I keep telling you, I'm
- 21:39Speaker 1: gonna make a sad fire. By the way, just let
- 21:41Speaker 1: you know, he said, just let you know. See see
- 21:44Speaker 1: when you go that way, I'm gonna follow you. Right now,
- 21:46Speaker 1: I don't know. And what's so wonderful about bat Too
- 21:51Speaker 1: is that those organizations, all of them about service, which
- 21:56Speaker 1: is so powerful, and it's wonderful that they represent the
- 22:02Speaker 1: way they are representing represented on the Polish camps. You know,
- 22:07Speaker 1: we want, we want our young people got are going
- 22:09Speaker 1: in to keep that in mind too, you know, pash
- 22:14Speaker 1: be of service right, be be be, be diligent right
- 22:19Speaker 1: in your studies. Please don't waste, don't go ahead of
- 22:23Speaker 1: just party, have some fun, but don't go in it
- 22:25Speaker 1: just party. Don't let your parents, whether you got money,
- 22:28Speaker 1: whether you got money donated. We got the scholars favor,
- 22:31Speaker 1: don't let that money be wasted going there. Do what
- 22:33Speaker 1: you're supposed to do. Come on out and do what
- 22:36Speaker 1: needs to be done there. You know, let's let's talk
- 22:40Speaker 1: about you know, we talked about HBC, you talk about family,
- 22:43Speaker 1: we talk about living dreams, and we're talked about trying
- 22:46Speaker 1: to change lives with these scholarships dollars that were trying
- 22:48Speaker 1: to raise for the stream of Thon which is happening Tuesday,
- 22:51Speaker 1: the decent referson. We want people to make a donation.
- 22:53Speaker 1: And the fact that the donations are tax reductable, that's
- 22:56Speaker 1: gonna be real. They're tax detectable this time of the
- 22:58Speaker 1: year is when people make these type with donations, and
- 23:01Speaker 1: like I always tell anybody, it's you know, a dollar
- 23:03Speaker 1: got the president elect, Joe Biden elected, So it doesn't
- 23:06Speaker 1: take much to be a donation. And more importantly, it's
- 23:09Speaker 1: about understanding the change that you can make when you
- 23:12Speaker 1: make effort to create change and your life. When you
- 23:15Speaker 1: look at the things that's happened in COVID happened this year,
- 23:19Speaker 1: we didn't see that coming. How did it affect you?
- 23:21Speaker 1: Because my my story, I tell everybody honestly, you know,
- 23:24Speaker 1: when it happened, it was like moving in slow motion.
- 23:27Speaker 1: I didn't know how to go out in public. Initially
- 23:30Speaker 1: I had my gloves, I had my parrel, I had
- 23:33Speaker 1: my mad but in fact I didn't have a mask
- 23:35Speaker 1: in the time. I had a kind of like a
- 23:36Speaker 1: ski mask. I just kind of like pulled it up
- 23:38Speaker 1: above my nose and I went at home deeper and
- 23:40Speaker 1: I came out. I didn't know that opened the door
- 23:43Speaker 1: to fast, or that I put Pararel off, and so
- 23:45Speaker 1: I just locked out into the house for about several
- 23:48Speaker 1: weeks until I trying to figure out Because it was
- 23:50Speaker 1: the whole factor, it was so much unknown about COVID
- 23:53Speaker 1: and I said, we know a lot now, but we
- 23:55Speaker 1: kind of know how to live with it. Now. How
- 23:57Speaker 1: did they react to you and how did you deal
- 23:59Speaker 1: with it in your family and the surrounding individuals who
- 24:02Speaker 1: you come in contact with. Okay, you know, first, first off,
- 24:06Speaker 1: when we u when we got to notice that we
- 24:08Speaker 1: had to lock down, I was facilitating or um at
- 24:13Speaker 1: the school program in the arts and creating and and
- 24:16Speaker 1: we were just getting ready to do one. It delified
- 24:19Speaker 1: a tribute to the O James, all my little people.
- 24:21Speaker 1: We were reading my spoons and maid never end and
- 24:25Speaker 1: we never got a chance to do it. And so
- 24:28Speaker 1: the first hit I got was I missed my kids,
- 24:32Speaker 1: and I know they missed me. And it wasn't just
- 24:33Speaker 1: about the still I had been to these young people
- 24:36Speaker 1: for like two years. I think my sin now as
- 24:39Speaker 1: far as my immediate familys, I missed them that that
- 24:42Speaker 1: because I was on the schedule with them. Now my
- 24:45Speaker 1: immediate family, my husband is a respiratory thing. So I
- 24:49Speaker 1: spent play time praying for him to be shaped at
- 24:53Speaker 1: the hospital and him and all the other medical professionals,
- 24:56Speaker 1: but also prayer you can bring it home to me.
- 24:59Speaker 1: But also I prayed for my daughter who worked in
- 25:04Speaker 1: the county, and she couldn't stop work right there like
- 25:07Speaker 1: that minute. But she would eventually come home. And my granddaughter,
- 25:10Speaker 1: of course was under age, so she hadn't stayed there.
- 25:13Speaker 1: I stayed home. They stay stayed home. So I basically,
- 25:16Speaker 1: for the most part, I stayed home. Whenever I needed something,
- 25:19Speaker 1: my daughter would go out for me to get it,
- 25:22Speaker 1: or I start ordering stuff to order and to bring
- 25:25Speaker 1: it to my house. I became the Queen Amazon, wal
- 25:29Speaker 1: martin Target, and everybody else that was the Sam Club.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Everybody I ordered into the Hunts and then of course
- 25:36Speaker 1: I sat up there and then like about ten pounds
- 25:38Speaker 1: like everybody else. But the way I handled it was
- 25:42Speaker 1: that I tried to follow the science and what people
- 25:47Speaker 1: were saying, and the way my husband was feeling when
- 25:50Speaker 1: he would come home, like looking at he was gonna
- 25:53Speaker 1: drop dead at the door, you know, pulling off all
- 25:57Speaker 1: his stuff and dropping it in a special bed. Well,
- 26:00Speaker 1: of course they don't come home with a deathly stuff,
- 26:02Speaker 1: but back in the has mat suit. But dropping this
- 26:04Speaker 1: stuff in a special bag and washing this close set
- 26:07Speaker 1: and then we have we tried to be We tried
- 26:09Speaker 1: to use the caution that we knew we had to use.
- 26:12Speaker 1: We also used the mindset because even though we're strong
- 26:18Speaker 1: and healthy, there are a lot of people that I'm not.
- 26:21Speaker 1: That's why I can't understand why nobody wants to wear
- 26:25Speaker 1: were not nobody, but a lot of people get upset
- 26:28Speaker 1: about wearing the mask. I'm just gonna be upfront with
- 26:32Speaker 1: everybody about this. I've suffered from a fear. Uh had
- 26:37Speaker 1: an ape. I've had a fear for the last four
- 26:39Speaker 1: years and all for a lot of people don't know.
- 26:41Speaker 1: The thing is that said, it's really a heart rhythm.
- 26:44Speaker 1: That's what I had. So it was hard, kind of
- 26:47Speaker 1: hard to breathe. Sometimes I get a little rinded, you
- 26:50Speaker 1: know what I mean, blue winded. And I was always
- 26:51Speaker 1: a kind of put live. I'm always moved. That's a
- 26:56Speaker 1: dance as I talked. That's a good In fact, of course,
- 26:59Speaker 1: something hit me like that. When I thought it was
- 27:01Speaker 1: bron Pikes and I thought I had eight fe m,
- 27:03Speaker 1: I said, want to hear the lad bit. So we
- 27:06Speaker 1: told me what it was and I was in the hospital.
- 27:08Speaker 1: I went to the emergency you know, I told my
- 27:09Speaker 1: daughter my husband wasn't home, and I guess I used
- 27:12Speaker 1: restatory therapist. He came on and I said, bad, check
- 27:14Speaker 1: out the step and check me check measing what I said, cleave.
- 27:18Speaker 1: I can't breathe. I can't breathe. I can't breath. He said, well, look,
- 27:20Speaker 1: let me shot with bok and I said, noe Shan
- 27:21Speaker 1: tells on the way. So my daughter took me to
- 27:23Speaker 1: the emergency. When I got to emergency, they said, miss Payden,
- 27:26Speaker 1: what happened? I said, I can't breathe. They started running
- 27:30Speaker 1: and hearing on and they took like a few hours
- 27:32Speaker 1: or whatever. And then I said, yes, then it's a
- 27:35Speaker 1: rover to us soon or something. Let me get up
- 27:37Speaker 1: party here. Y'all just doing something. So I to breathe
- 27:39Speaker 1: and they said, no, Miss Staden, you're heart great. They
- 27:42Speaker 1: told her who the heart way it was. We came
- 27:44Speaker 1: in to unders and he needs to hospital. That evening. Um, um,
- 27:48Speaker 1: that party I was just came in. They want to
- 27:50Speaker 1: have me. I loved it. It It can he said, Miss Pagan.
- 27:52Speaker 1: He said, um, we're gonna have to keep you or
- 27:54Speaker 1: find out what this is. I'm getting. I'm gonna get
- 27:56Speaker 1: to the main party. You gotta keep find out what
- 27:59Speaker 1: took your what made your heart break? Like that you
- 28:01Speaker 1: look on the verge of maybe having a step, you know,
- 28:04Speaker 1: and saying you look healthy. I'm not diabetic. I don't
- 28:07Speaker 1: have hockey that's strong, I have any of that stuff.
- 28:10Speaker 1: And I'm seven years old this year about a sixt
- 28:13Speaker 1: what six what at that time. So anyway, then they
- 28:17Speaker 1: came in the next I said, that night, man, it's
- 28:19Speaker 1: all get up. And though, because I'm not used to
- 28:20Speaker 1: be in the hospital and people don't know, they're like
- 28:23Speaker 1: So the next day I said, okay, then can I
- 28:25Speaker 1: go home? And they said no. And when they came in,
- 28:27Speaker 1: they had on mask and they put stuff on the
- 28:29Speaker 1: door and he put quarantine. I said, okay, now y'all
- 28:31Speaker 1: really stare or what's going on? They so, we're trying
- 28:33Speaker 1: to figure out what kind of what, what triggered this,
- 28:37Speaker 1: what happened, you know, we gotta do some extra some
- 28:40Speaker 1: more um exams, so whatever it is, and so uh,
- 28:45Speaker 1: I said, okay. Then they came back that night. This
- 28:47Speaker 1: is Sunday night. I went to the Saturday morning, came
- 28:49Speaker 1: back this Sunday night and they said, okay, let's playing
- 28:52Speaker 1: me figured out what it was, and so what is it?
- 28:54Speaker 1: They said, you have a rhino virus. I said that
- 28:57Speaker 1: was a rhino virus, and they said that rhyme masters
- 29:00Speaker 1: of nose. It was all on my nose. That's why
- 29:01Speaker 1: we didn't here in my chest or it give us
- 29:03Speaker 1: all in my nose like it was like when I
- 29:05Speaker 1: tell people I was blowing my nose, pryor to that
- 29:08Speaker 1: and it was like that glue. You know that old
- 29:10Speaker 1: glue that you used to the brown glue. HiT's still way.
- 29:14Speaker 1: It was thick like that when I blowed them my nose.
- 29:15Speaker 1: So that was stuck in my nose. I'm believing that
- 29:18Speaker 1: I had anxiety attack because I couldn't breathe in it
- 29:21Speaker 1: through my heart rhym don't show a short. He came
- 29:26Speaker 1: in and he said, miss pat we we said your
- 29:28Speaker 1: heart almost brought set My heart said we already said
- 29:35Speaker 1: it to said he we don't. We said it that
- 29:38Speaker 1: the normal. And then I said what I was always
- 29:42Speaker 1: the other after you saw that snow heard beat I
- 29:45Speaker 1: say that to say this, It was difficult for me
- 29:48Speaker 1: put that mask on with one of the nabies until
- 29:50Speaker 1: I stayed home and stuff. I didn't want to put
- 29:52Speaker 1: that mask on that I knew if I went anywhere
- 29:55Speaker 1: to visit my daughter or to go pick up my meds,
- 29:58Speaker 1: although I could have had them brought in. I like
- 30:01Speaker 1: going to get my I know my people at my pharmacy.
- 30:03Speaker 1: I know their names. I like them. I wanted to
- 30:06Speaker 1: see them. So I can't go out once or twice
- 30:07Speaker 1: to meet. But I hate it putting that mask from
- 30:10Speaker 1: my husband. Right now, I'm at like five or six
- 30:13Speaker 1: different masks. He's a restoring There was people bring me
- 30:16Speaker 1: different mask to track. None of them made me hack.
- 30:19Speaker 1: But you know what, I wore that mask anyway. I
- 30:23Speaker 1: still wear a mask when I go out. I got
- 30:26Speaker 1: about five or six something in my car. And not
- 30:28Speaker 1: only that, I have a homeless man that I loved
- 30:32Speaker 1: it death. His name is Traps. And I've been back
- 30:34Speaker 1: home thirteen years. I can't even take there my mom
- 30:36Speaker 1: and that sick and my brothers and sisters. While nine
- 30:39Speaker 1: to fives and my spar is more flexible. This homeless
- 30:42Speaker 1: speller that I that I took you up. I love
- 30:44Speaker 1: him a death the same us Trappings. See it's here
- 30:47Speaker 1: in Miami, A lot of people in mind, and many
- 30:48Speaker 1: girls they knowing the first thing I thought about that,
- 30:52Speaker 1: oh my god, trying to do don't have no masks.
- 30:54Speaker 1: They're not gonna let him in the story, you know,
- 30:56Speaker 1: because he's honest, and he's girding and stuff. And he
- 30:59Speaker 1: knows my car because I blow it. I blow it
- 31:01Speaker 1: into my black cataly whenever I own. I saw us
- 31:04Speaker 1: in little times, got a bracket. He got a little
- 31:08Speaker 1: Christmas box or whatever with some cookies and stuff that
- 31:10Speaker 1: I won't get written because I know he's gonna stay there.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Were stay happy that he's had the damay there. But
- 31:15Speaker 1: I think he needed to go and to store to
- 31:16Speaker 1: these vestables and things, and so I had an extra
- 31:19Speaker 1: packet of a best for him. But when I gave
- 31:24Speaker 1: him the mask, he looked at me, size that real wine.
- 31:32Speaker 1: He said, thank you, last you. I what can I say?
- 31:42Speaker 1: Nobody can make you wear the mask. The mask is
- 31:46Speaker 1: not just for you, although you need it, it will
- 31:49Speaker 1: help you. The mask is to help h We can
- 31:54Speaker 1: do this in the schools. Kids my granddaby want to
- 31:56Speaker 1: go back to schools so bad. It has around some
- 31:59Speaker 1: of the friends already going back. And then because I
- 32:02Speaker 1: want to look kids in there got you know, COVID
- 32:05Speaker 1: and that want of teachers got to teach us back
- 32:06Speaker 1: and not a look kid will be back too. Well.
- 32:09Speaker 1: The pandemic it's a dangerous thing, not only in the schools,
- 32:14Speaker 1: in the homes, in the in the in the the
- 32:17Speaker 1: for sure, in the hospitals, on the streets and where
- 32:19Speaker 1: the else. But if I if I had to say
- 32:23Speaker 1: something that really came from my heart about this whole situation,
- 32:29Speaker 1: it's not gonna su mass. It might stay right. And
- 32:36Speaker 1: somebody else's say it's not an easy thing. And the
- 32:39Speaker 1: minute I get in my car, snatch it off, just
- 32:43Speaker 1: before I go get out of my car, I'm mad.
- 32:46Speaker 1: Put it only But I still here. I still help it.
- 32:51Speaker 1: My family's self, with fact, god, my my neighbor's I've
- 32:54Speaker 1: lost a few cousins and a few friends, so it
- 32:57Speaker 1: is personal. But I know this. People want to day school,
- 33:00Speaker 1: not just the little kids like my grand daby, the
- 33:02Speaker 1: college students because they like that interaction. They like that
- 33:06Speaker 1: professor stand up there. They're like that, they're like that
- 33:08Speaker 1: dialogue between each other. And we don't do whatever we
- 33:12Speaker 1: have to do in order to continue to learn and education.
- 33:15Speaker 1: And we're gonna help them. We're gonna help all these kids,
- 33:17Speaker 1: even if we have to be virtual a little bit more.
- 33:19Speaker 1: But I think, like they say, there is a light
- 33:21Speaker 1: at the end so so we got a lot of
- 33:24Speaker 1: young people going back into the bit. The more they're
- 33:26Speaker 1: gonna make into the buildings and when they get there,
- 33:28Speaker 1: we need to be prepared for them. That's everything from
- 33:32Speaker 1: the from the nursery school in kindergarten all that to
- 33:34Speaker 1: the elementary to junior, the little school in odd school
- 33:37Speaker 1: all the way to the college University's Harvard not yelling
- 33:40Speaker 1: all the others. We can't stop learning, we can't stop living,
- 33:46Speaker 1: and for sure we can't stop getting. Now. On December first,
- 33:50Speaker 1: I want everybody call their duesday Tuesday Tuesdays, payal dues,
- 33:56Speaker 1: help some of these stools, these people that were prod
- 33:59Speaker 1: of be in a position to help us way around
- 34:02Speaker 1: in life. It's gonna get better. We're gonna make it
- 34:06Speaker 1: better and we're gonna get that million dollars. Jean Marie,

- 35:07Speaker 1: those I want to jump over board to because their
- 35:08Speaker 1: song better than calling me. Now. I love you guys
- 35:11Speaker 1: so much. Let's just do it for boy he's for
- 35:13Speaker 1: More's family, Polish family and and all the other h
- 35:17Speaker 1: PC used. Let's come up. I just tell you something.
- 35:20Speaker 1: I went in I never worked. It was years ago
- 35:22Speaker 1: and this was Morris Brown. I was visiting, but I went.
- 35:27Speaker 1: I was at Morris Brown and it's at the time
- 35:28Speaker 1: when they were dissolving. Things were going down, and h
- 35:31Speaker 1: one of my daughter's friends was there and all the
- 35:33Speaker 1: kids ran out and I felt so bad as they
- 35:36Speaker 1: thought I came there a saved the student. If I
- 35:37Speaker 1: if I could have saved I actually I would here
- 35:43Speaker 1: by the same token. Florida Memorial is our historical black
- 35:46Speaker 1: houge down here in the Miami, and I go out
- 35:49Speaker 1: there and do things for them also. But one of
- 35:52Speaker 1: the first times I actually got a chance to go
- 35:54Speaker 1: beyond the theater, Blue Roads perform noting, which is basically
- 35:57Speaker 1: where all the roads do. Whatever I had to do,
- 35:59Speaker 1: and I watched the kids probably whatever. I had to
- 36:01Speaker 1: go around because one of my my my girlfriends taught
- 36:04Speaker 1: music out They talk instruments and things by ln and stuff,
- 36:08Speaker 1: and so I had to go around to the back
- 36:09Speaker 1: of the college. When I got went to the back
- 36:10Speaker 1: of the college, I sat in my car for about
- 36:13Speaker 1: five minutes and a crime and I said, oh my god,
- 36:17Speaker 1: Oh my god, they need help so bad. I said.
- 36:19Speaker 1: I was always in the front. I always saw what
- 36:22Speaker 1: they wanted me to see. That time I saw what
- 36:26Speaker 1: I needed. So when I say that our boys family
- 36:31Speaker 1: needs it, all of our agecies, colleges, college and universities needed,
- 36:38Speaker 1: do you want to see what they what a lot
- 36:40Speaker 1: of them want you to see, and some of them
- 36:42Speaker 1: and for the most part what you see it's what
- 36:45Speaker 1: it is. But if you see something that's not what
- 36:48Speaker 1: it is, let your heart tell you to help make
- 36:52Speaker 1: it better, because there's always gonna be some young people
- 36:55Speaker 1: that want to go beyond what they already know. They
- 36:59Speaker 1: want to know more, they want to do more, they
- 37:01Speaker 1: want to be more, and we should and we will
- 37:05Speaker 1: and we will. Thank you, Joe mury Payton, thank you
- 37:07Speaker 1: for coming on the show stream of thon December first.
- 37:10Speaker 1: She's a chairperson again. Thank you, God bless you. I
- 37:13Speaker 1: appreciate you. Talk soon, Bokay do
