Latest / The Lila Rose Show / BONUS EPISODE: The Origin of Transgender Surgery & David Reimer
Transcript
- 0:00Gender dysphoria is a condition that is deeply painful for many
- 0:04people, and it's increasing in its occurrence today.
- 0:08Transgender surgery has a really dark history, and I think
- 0:10everybody needs to know it. I think it's key that we
- 0:13understand the history of where transgender surgeries even came
- 0:17from. And I want to focus today on a
- 0:19key person that you should know about and his story.
- 0:22His name is David Reamer. You may not have heard of David
- 0:24Reamer in conversations about gender or sex because David
- 0:28Reamer actually is proof of the darkness of the transgender
- 0:32ideology. David Reamer was actually born
- 0:34Bruce Reamer and he had a twin brother.
- 0:37Bruce and his twin brother Brian when they were very young, about
- 0:418 months old were diagnosed with a condition that the doctor said
- 0:46circumcision would help heal and so little Bruce was first to go
- 0:50and was taken in to be circumcised and in the
- 0:52circumcision they damaged Bruce's penis.
- 0:56After this botched circumcision the condition that the 2 little
- 1:00twin boys had had actually went away for the other brother so he
- 1:04never underwent circumcision. They, they decided not to do it
- 1:07because of what happened to Bruce.
- 1:10But the parents were now left with this beautiful little baby
- 1:12boy who was severely maimed. And in that process, they ended
- 1:16up watching television. One day, they watched a program
- 1:19with John Money on it, The psychiatrist, John Money, who at
- 1:21the time was doing experimental transgender surgeries.
- 1:25And John Money was saying, hey, listen, if you have ambiguous
- 1:28genitalia, then you can be raised as a different sex than
- 1:30you are biologically. And so the parents started
- 1:32thinking, well, maybe we can raise Bruce as a girl.
- 1:35So they ended up taking Bruce and his twin brother to to see
- 1:39John Money. And this is where all the
- 1:41horrors began. John Money would eventually
- 1:43remove both of Bruce's testicles.
- 1:46He would instruct the parents to raise Bruce as a girl, changing
- 1:50his name to Brenda, and he would start to start the process of
- 1:54ultimately genderizing Bruce, now Brenda, as a little girl.
- 1:58In the process, Doctor Money would actually sexually abuse
- 2:02both boys. So he would instruct the parents
- 2:03to leave them with him for clinical visits and he would
- 2:06actually have the boys commit sexual acts with each other so
- 2:10he'd sexually abuse them. And the boys were so disturbed
- 2:13by this they would cry. They would ask not to go, but
- 2:15the parents would still send them and the psychiatrist would
- 2:18even abuse them more. He would physically abuse them
- 2:21if they weren't doing these sex acts with each other.
- 2:23So the abuse that he perpetuated on Bruce and his brother is
- 2:29completely, it's unbelievably horrific.
- 2:32And this is a psychiatrist, which, by the way, continued to
- 2:34have his license until his death.
- 2:36When Bruce became an adolescent, you know, being called Brenda,
- 2:40he actually would discover the truth of his birth because he
- 2:43asked questions. He didn't want to be a girl
- 2:44anymore. He wanted to be a boy.
- 2:46And his parents would admit to him that they had had his
- 2:49testicles removed and that he was actually born a boy.
- 2:53And when they first shared this with him, his one question was,
- 2:56what was my name? And they told him, your name was
- 2:59Bruce. And it's at that point he
- 3:01adopted the name David instead because he wanted to be like
- 3:03David, who's who was able to slay the giant and overcome
- 3:08tremendous difficulties. So he had a fighting spirit.
- 3:10He was a beautiful person who had a fighting spirit.
- 3:13And we're actually going to watch the exclusive interview
- 3:15that he did with Oprah Winfrey in 2000, talking about the
- 3:19trauma that he endured and the forgiveness that he had in his
- 3:23heart, ultimately for those who harmed him.
- 3:26For years, this case was called a medical triumph.
- 3:29But in truth, the case was a failure, devastating the lives
- 3:33of just about everybody involved.
- 3:35Oprah's admitting it already. I mean, this is like the OGD
- 3:39transitioner. It's so tragic that his story
- 3:42has not echoed more to today that not more people know this
- 3:44story. This is David, who has remained
- 3:48anonymous until now only known in the medical journals as John
- 3:53Joan. And this is Janet Rhymer,
- 3:54David's mother, who made the agonizing decision to change the
- 4:00sex of her son. You can't actually change your
- 4:04sex. You cannot change your sex.
- 4:05All you can do is take hormones to change the hormonal balances
- 4:09in your body. You can do surgeries to remove
- 4:12body parts and make maybe fake body parts.
- 4:16That's what you can do. You can dress a different way,
- 4:18you can put on makeup, but you cannot change your sex.
- 4:22And to raise him as a girl and what you all at home didn't see
- 4:26during the taping of that piece, we could tell Janet you're, you
- 4:30know, moved and probably disturbed by.
- 4:35Can't imagine being the mother. I mean, I can't.
- 4:38It's if that happened to a child, like my child, first of
- 4:44all, I would never. But let's say in that position
- 4:48years later and you're realizing that you did do something
- 4:52horrible and that you also gave access as a predator, access to
- 4:56your children regularly and forced your children to go see
- 4:58that predator. I mean, multiple levels of
- 5:02devastation. And you can kind of see it on
- 5:04her face here. David, you you comfort her.
- 5:09So she's hurting right now. Mothers are all over the world,
- 5:17are all alike. There's guilt.
- 5:19It's darned if you do and darned if you don't, you know, with
- 5:23things that were done, were done out of compassion, out of love
- 5:27for your child. And how can I hate my mother for
- 5:31that? What an amazing guy.
- 5:33What I was saying his example here is such a good example for
- 5:38anybody who's fighting against the trans ideology.
- 5:42He has compassion. I mean, he's clearly speaking
- 5:44out against ideology in this interview and the ideology that
- 5:46led them to make the decisions that they made and John Money
- 5:49and what he did the doctor. But he has so much compassion
- 5:52for his own mother and forgiveness.
- 5:54And he's saying that he's seeing the good intention because there
- 5:57are a lot of good intentions. I mean, people that are facing
- 6:00gender dysphoria, people that are choosing to try to
- 6:03transition or their parents of kids are a transition, many of
- 6:06them not all because they do think there are some with bad
- 6:08intentions or they're very egotistical or narcissism or
- 6:10there's all kinds of other issues, right?
- 6:12But for some, I think there is true compassion.
- 6:16And he, he is acknowledging that in his own mother.
- 6:19And I think it's so his posture is one of so much love, like
- 6:25real virtue here to be able to do that.
- 6:27And it's something I think we can all learn from.
- 6:29Did you think he would hate you? Yes, I did.
- 6:32Did you hate yourself? Yes.
- 6:37So you talk on the tape about the day you first put the dress
- 6:40on. Did you have agonizing feelings
- 6:43about it even when the doctor or were you of that generation or
- 6:47kind of person when the doctor said this would be best?
- 6:49Did you all believe that it would be best?
- 6:52Yes, I had complete faith in the Doctor.
- 6:54It's so crazy. It's like the power of a doctor,
- 6:57the power of an authority figure, the power of a parent,
- 7:01the power of a parent suggesting to a child, you may be a boy or
- 7:04a girl, we don't know yet. The power of a doctor saying,
- 7:08oh, you, you feel like you like to wear dresses or you like to
- 7:12do more feminine things, you might be a girl.
- 7:15The power of suggestion from an authority figure to totally
- 7:19wreak havoc on a young impressionable person's life.
- 7:22And that's what a lot of the Transmania and cult is doing
- 7:26today. I believed it would be best, but
- 7:30when he started to RIP it off I started to have doubts.
- 7:35So I'm going to tell a story here.
- 7:38Over a decade ago, I was on an investigative trip investigating
- 7:43abortion clinics. It's what I do at Live Action.
- 7:45And I was with a team and we were in a cafe in somewhere in
- 7:49New England and we were having lunch basically.
- 7:53And then this couple came in. There were these two men.
- 7:55One of them was cross dressing. It was very clearly a man, very
- 7:57skinny, very angular. He was wearing women's clothing
- 8:00like a miniskirt. And they had this child with
- 8:02them. The child was beautiful, had
- 8:04this bright curly red hair, tightly wound and was wearing
- 8:09this very glitter kind of dramatic dress.
- 8:12And he's like kind of like Dorothy type, golden sparkly
- 8:15shoes, had dolls. And immediately my eyes went to
- 8:17this family because like you can tell there's no mom.
- 8:19This is a cross dressing dude who's a dad who's playing the
- 8:21part of a dad or playing the part of a mom.
- 8:23And we actually start strike up a conversation with them.
- 8:26So I still have kind of investigator mode on because
- 8:29we're on an investigative trip to investigate abortion clinics.
- 8:31And the this couple says that her name is Roxanne and it's
- 8:35going to be Roxanne's birthday soon.
- 8:37At one point, my investigative partner says Roxanne is such a
- 8:42beautiful hair because it was this beautiful, like curly red
- 8:45hair. And one of the men who was
- 8:48dressing as a woman says she was had long, beautiful hair, but
- 8:53she locked herself in the bathroom with scissors and cut
- 8:56it all off. But when he started to RIP it
- 8:59off, I started to have doubts. And so then I asked the little
- 9:03girl who I realized in that moment, it's not a girl.
- 9:08And I said, Roxanne, why did you cut off all your hair?
- 9:11And this little boy says to me, because it was getting too long.
- 9:15So we complete the conversation. They actually ended up inviting
- 9:19us to like, the birthday party or said he's, you know, Rustan's
- 9:21having a birthday party. They were very kind of social,
- 9:23kind of very almost flamboyant about inviting people into their
- 9:27family life. Like, this is my family, this is
- 9:28my daughter. And I thought, what do I do?
- 9:32I just witnessed a child who's been psychologically abused by
- 9:34two men. You're probably the adoptive
- 9:36parents. What do I do for this child?
- 9:39Do I call the police? Do I is there social service
- 9:43line to call? And I started to do some
- 9:45research and like, no, this is the early seeds of
- 9:47transgenderism being pushed on children because at that time,
- 9:52and this was a decade ago, there was already the Rainbow Alliance
- 9:54with I think it was 70,000. They claimed youths and children
- 9:58who are identifying as transgender.
- 10:00If you're a child and you're identifying as transgender, you
- 10:04are not identifying as transgender.
- 10:06You are being. Thoughts are being put into your
- 10:08head by your parents or media or teachers around you that
- 10:12transgender is even a thing and that you are biologically not
- 10:15the same thing as your own gender.
- 10:17Because you can be a little boy and have more feminine
- 10:19attributes. You can be a little girl and
- 10:21have more masculine attributes. That does not change your sex,
- 10:24which is your gender. They are the two of the same
- 10:26thing. We've only changed the idea of
- 10:28gender to be separate from sex in the last several.
- 10:32In the last century, gender was a is a construct for language
- 10:35which doesn't have biology. You are your gender, you are
- 10:39your sex. It's the same thing.
- 10:41This is the result, the consequence of authority figures
- 10:45doing evil things, even if they're misguided, doing it with
- 10:48misguided compassion. And during the whole journey of
- 10:54trying to create a feminine being, there were doubts along
- 11:00the way. But I couldn't afford to
- 11:02contemplate them because I couldn't afford to be wrong.
- 11:06I couldn't have faced the alternative.
- 11:09And the alternative being what? That you'd made this horrible
- 11:11mistake? Yes.
- 11:13Yeah. So it's the double down effect.
- 11:16And you know, you see what Jazz Jennings is a character from TLC
- 11:20and, and the mother is super involved, like her whole
- 11:22identity is her child, her little boy turning into a girl
- 11:27basically. And you see these parents that
- 11:29have made their identity now to have be the parents of trans
- 11:33kids and the surgeries and the medical appointments and the,
- 11:36and the whole sort of lifestyle of it.
- 11:38And they're, they have to keep doubling down on it because if
- 11:41they acknowledge, oh, wait, I made a mistake here.
- 11:44I mean the the the crushing guilt and also the liability,
- 11:47possibly future liability for them.
- 11:50It's a lot to contemplate. Since you, since your earliest
- 11:54memories, you never felt like you were a boy, a girl.
- 11:59I never quite fit in. The culture can overemphasize
- 12:04gender stereotypes, sex stereotypes, and that if that is
- 12:08then weaponized against kids, like there's something wrong
- 12:11with you because you as a boy like art or there's something
- 12:14wrong with you because you as a girl like climbing trees and
- 12:17therefore you're not a fully a girl anymore.
- 12:19You're not fully a boy. That's a problem with the
- 12:21culture. It's not a problem with the
- 12:22child, you know. And and this is an extreme case
- 12:24with David because he's talking about, you know, describing, you
- 12:29know, he was the victim of a medical accident, you know,
- 12:31medical malpractice, basically. And so this whole thing evolved
- 12:35and then like this crazy ideology of this doctor Money,
- 12:37who was, you know, one of the first trans surgery surgeons,
- 12:41right? The girls would do their things
- 12:44with their Barbies and things like that and that wouldn't
- 12:46interest me. Things such as trucks and
- 12:49bowling forts and, you know, get into the odd fist fight and
- 12:53climbing trees. That's the kind of stuff that I
- 12:55like. But it was unacceptable, so I'd
- 12:56never. As a girl.
- 12:57As as a girl I had no place to to fit in what?
- 13:00Would you say to him when he would act out his maleness?
- 13:05I would try and convince him that he was doing it because he
- 13:09was a tomboy and that it was OK to be himself or herself.
- 13:14I would say at the time it was OK to be herself, but she was
- 13:18very much a tomboy. I tried to fit in, I tried with
- 13:25the makeup, and it turned out to be a disaster.
- 13:28I didn't do it because I liked it.
- 13:30I did it because I wanted so desperately to fit in, because I
- 13:32was so lonely. I mean, so many kids feel like
- 13:35they don't fit in today in part because of gender stereotypes.
- 13:39I mean, the problem is not your body.
- 13:42The problem is the culture. And I let one boy kiss me on my
- 13:47cheek once, and I thought about it.
- 13:50No, I don't like this. No, that's that.
- 13:53I can't help that, you know, I am what I.
- 13:55Did you feel you you when you say I am what I am, but you
- 13:57didn't know what that was? I wasn't sure.
- 14:01But here's the thing. There are, I guarantee you,
- 14:05young boys today who are putting on makeup in order to fit in.
- 14:10It's like, what does it mean to like something as a child?
- 14:13What does it mean to like something?
- 14:14You're looking for belonging, you're looking for maybe your,
- 14:18you know, praise or comforter or attention.
- 14:21You're looking for attention maybe from your parents.
- 14:23You're not getting attention from them.
- 14:24And so the way you can get attention is by acting out in X
- 14:27or Y or Z way. So it's so much complexity here.
- 14:30That's why if a kid like a boy is putting on makeup, that
- 14:33doesn't make him a girl. I think you have to deep down,
- 14:35why is he putting on makeup? He sees his mother doing it
- 14:37maybe. Or like he's an art, he is an
- 14:39artist. He, he likes art or, you know,
- 14:41he's very like into like the physical sensation, you know,
- 14:43the thing like there's so many, there's so much complexity to a
- 14:46person and all the things that they do or choose, especially
- 14:49for children and what they're learning and exploring and
- 14:51experimenting. And so this, it's so it's so
- 14:55pernicious to take that exploration and that innocence
- 14:59and to say that, oh, now this means you are a trans and you
- 15:04need to you're, you're not at home in your own body, your
- 15:08body. There's a problem with your
- 15:10body. David would eventually commit
- 15:12suicide after experiencing severe depression.
- 15:15So he had a very tragic ending in his beautiful life.
- 15:18And that the, the suicidality rate, the suicide rates for
- 15:22people who are trans are higher than any other suicide rate
- 15:26that's documented in history of any people group.
- 15:28And it's because if you put someone, if someone is already
- 15:30feeling at war with their body. And in this case, David Reamer
- 15:32wasn't even feeling at war with his body.
- 15:33His parents were at war with his body, right?
- 15:35His body had been maimed in a medical malpractice.
- 15:38But if you're feeling at war with your body, the solution is
- 15:41not to go to war with your body, It's to heal.
- 15:44It's to heal and and reintegrate with your body because your body
- 15:47is good. And that is the ultimate message
- 15:50for anyone struggling with gender dysphoria or struggling
- 15:52with hatred for their body or discomfort with their body.
- 15:55There are a lot of different kinds of personalities.
- 15:57There's a lot of different ways to be a woman or to be a man, to
- 16:00be a human. But your body is not a mistake.
- 16:02Let the diversity be and how we live out being human and not
- 16:07make the mistake of going to war with our bodies.
