- 1:24Speaker 1: My next guest was born and raised in Philadelphia. Is
- 1:28Speaker 1: a Grammy nominated singer songwriter with his smooth, raspy delivery
- 1:33Speaker 1: home from years of singing in his church's quiet are
- 1:36Speaker 1: pursuing a career as a lawyer, which is really interested.
- 1:38Speaker 1: One of the many reasons I want to bring him
- 1:40Speaker 1: on the show that Chris witch Uh. He switched his
- 1:43Speaker 1: focus to music and began developing his craft as an artist.
- 1:46Speaker 1: His first single, Keep You in Mind, landed him and
- 1:50Speaker 1: his first number one record at Urban a C and
- 1:52Speaker 1: later crossed over to Billboard's Hot R and B chart.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Currently working on the launch of a restaurant and a
- 1:58Speaker 1: man's clothe in line, please working the money making conversation
- 2:03Speaker 1: Jordan's thanks, Hello sir, How are you pretty good? My friend? Lawyer?
- 2:10Speaker 1: Huh yes, yes, yes, we'll see. How I worked at
- 2:16Speaker 1: IBM and so I love IBM. A degree is in mathematics,
- 2:20Speaker 1: and I became a stand up comic, so I find
- 2:22Speaker 1: it relatable, So don't I'm not just saying that just
- 2:25Speaker 1: that was a career switch for me that a lot
- 2:27Speaker 1: of people thought was crazy. How are you gonna go
- 2:29Speaker 1: from IBM mathematics and now you're telling jokes? So who
- 2:34Speaker 1: you're a lawyer and now you want to get out
- 2:37Speaker 1: in that singing and there's no guarantees. What was that
- 2:40Speaker 1: transition like and what was the reaction to your peers
- 2:43Speaker 1: or your family or your co workers? Well, the transition,
- 2:50Speaker 1: I believe was pretty difficult first because you have to
- 2:57Speaker 1: you have to think about when you make a check change,
- 3:00Speaker 1: and it shift, how uncomfortable want one you're gonna make yourself,
- 3:05Speaker 1: and then how uncomfortable you'll you'll make the others around you.
- 3:10Speaker 1: And what I what I found is the beauty and
- 3:16Speaker 1: being uncomfortable and the beauty and you know, taking that
- 3:20Speaker 1: risk and when things are a little shaky, and things
- 3:25Speaker 1: do seem a little uneasy, I feel like, and the
- 3:30Speaker 1: middle of all that's stilling an emotion. That's where you
- 3:32Speaker 1: find your true purpose and your true destiny and what
- 3:35Speaker 1: you truly love to do. I also, you know, I don't,
- 3:39Speaker 1: I'm not. I'm not sure if it if it's in
- 3:42Speaker 1: my bio. But I also was an insurance agent for
- 3:45Speaker 1: Geiko for four years, so I was, yeah, I was,
- 3:49Speaker 1: I was. I was an insurance agent agent and Geiko.
- 3:53Speaker 1: What I will say is that those corporate companies are
- 3:57Speaker 1: every everybody has their purpose and everyone plays their role.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Because at the time when I worked for Geico, they were,
- 4:04Speaker 1: you know, doing full tuition reimbursements, so it kind of
- 4:08Speaker 1: you know, it worked yourself out. But then we've got
- 4:11Speaker 1: to also remember that everything isn't it's in season, and
- 4:14Speaker 1: so you know, we have to be comfortable and content
- 4:18Speaker 1: with moving forward and spreading our wings. And I definitely, uh,
- 4:25Speaker 1: I definitely had had a lot of sleepless nights, but
- 4:28Speaker 1: they were all well worth it. Well, I had those
- 4:30Speaker 1: same sleepless nights that so so anybody. I tell people
- 4:34Speaker 1: who listen to the show, that's part of the process.
- 4:37Speaker 1: If you if you want to be comfortable, stay right
- 4:39Speaker 1: where you are and be and and then be frustrated
- 4:42Speaker 1: for the rest of your life because certain points, if
- 4:44Speaker 1: you don't make that transition, age is gonna catch up
- 4:47Speaker 1: with you and you can't make that transition. So you know,
- 4:49Speaker 1: if you have a dream that you aren't fulfilling right now,
- 4:52Speaker 1: figure out how to fulfill it, because in the end,
- 4:55Speaker 1: don't live your life based don't regret. So I know
- 4:58Speaker 1: when I made the decision to leave IBM, I made
- 5:01Speaker 1: that decision a year in advance, and and I would
- 5:05Speaker 1: tell everybody there were tears in my eyes because it
- 5:08Speaker 1: was tears tied to I didn't expect to do this.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I I went to college like I was supposed to,
- 5:13Speaker 1: because everybody told me I was supposed to go to college.
- 5:15Speaker 1: I got my degree like I was supposed to, and
- 5:18Speaker 1: I started working at IBM. I was doing everything I
- 5:20Speaker 1: was supposed to do. Now at night, I was doing
- 5:22Speaker 1: a stand up comedy. But if there was no realistic
- 5:24Speaker 1: approach that this is gonna be something I was gonna do,
- 5:26Speaker 1: because yeah, they'd Murphy out there, Yeah, Richard Pryor out there,
- 5:30Speaker 1: those were stand up comics. How could I be those people.
- 5:35Speaker 1: So when I say that to you, you have all
- 5:37Speaker 1: these peers out there, all these major players out there.
- 5:40Speaker 1: What convinced you that you could participate in that arena? Well,
- 5:47Speaker 1: you know nothing. You know, I didn't need any convention.
- 5:53Speaker 1: You know, when you are called to do something and
- 5:58Speaker 1: when you had the gifts, good talent, and you open
- 6:02Speaker 1: up your mouth and you see that that something is
- 6:06Speaker 1: using you outside of you yourself, you don't need to
- 6:09Speaker 1: convince anyone that you are who you who you are.
- 6:14Speaker 1: And I think that's where a lot of people respected
- 6:19Speaker 1: me and respect me now is because when I walk
- 6:22Speaker 1: UH in the room, I walk with purpose. I don't
- 6:25Speaker 1: walk to uh convinced. I don't walk to see who
- 6:29Speaker 1: who's who I'm better than, or who's better than me.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I don't walk to get the approval of others. And
- 6:35Speaker 1: when you're starting a business, and especially if you're getting
- 6:39Speaker 1: into the entertainment business, if you're looking for, you know,
- 6:44Speaker 1: for someone to validate you, are you looking for that
- 6:47Speaker 1: that co sign? I know that I know that that's
- 6:50Speaker 1: like you know, what what what we're what we're taught,
- 6:54Speaker 1: you know, And I know that that's like what with
- 6:56Speaker 1: a lot of people feel is necessary, but truly go
- 7:00Speaker 1: after your dreams and you know, don't wait to consist
- 7:04Speaker 1: you know yourself to do anything. You know, make the
- 7:06Speaker 1: plans that I what you really want to accomplish, and
- 7:09Speaker 1: put it in your heart and write it down and
- 7:11Speaker 1: and do the work, you know. And and that's what
- 7:15Speaker 1: I would encourage anyone to do. And that's you know,
- 7:18Speaker 1: that was my path. You know. I got up, I
- 7:22Speaker 1: literally got up and left the cubicle of Geico Insurance
- 7:26Speaker 1: and said this wasn't for me and I wouldn't go back.
- 7:29Speaker 1: And my mother, you know, she was very upset because
- 7:33Speaker 1: at the time I was helping her financially and I
- 7:36Speaker 1: really wasn't helping their financially, if you know what I mean.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Like I was helping her, like we were surviving, We
- 7:41Speaker 1: were getting past, you know, from month to months and
- 7:45Speaker 1: maybe we'll have three or four months cover. But I
- 7:48Speaker 1: know that it was it was it was more to that,
- 7:51Speaker 1: you know, and I knew that I had to do
- 7:53Speaker 1: more for my people and for you know, my family,
- 7:56Speaker 1: and so having eight siblings and growing up and you know,
- 8:01Speaker 1: just hearing the stories and seeing what everyone's going through,
- 8:04Speaker 1: you know, in my community, and then my and then
- 8:07Speaker 1: and and then my uh, you know family and immediate family.
- 8:12Speaker 1: It's like, you know what I want to I want
- 8:15Speaker 1: to put it all out there, you know I want
- 8:17Speaker 1: to put I want to put my oars into chasing
- 8:19Speaker 1: my dreams. And that's what I did. Well, you you
- 8:23Speaker 1: you chased your dream your music dreams in a city
- 8:26Speaker 1: that is renowned for music, Philadelphia. So what like it
- 8:29Speaker 1: was in Birmingham talking about doing this. You know what
- 8:34Speaker 1: people are Yeah, Bourmonham, where are you gonna go? We
- 8:38Speaker 1: gonna go? We are you gonna go? Cut the record
- 8:40Speaker 1: at Birmingham? And so when Philadelphia? I know on my show,
- 8:44Speaker 1: I don't you know, I don't play music, but I
- 8:46Speaker 1: gotta bring up this song because it was funny. I
- 8:49Speaker 1: can't keep running and and so, uh because I played
- 8:55Speaker 1: that song. I played that song because it's because the
- 8:58Speaker 1: beat the beat is off for one of my all
- 9:00Speaker 1: time favorite gap bands, Yearning. So now we got we
- 9:04Speaker 1: we had we had something insisting in comments. That's one
- 9:07Speaker 1: of my favorite songs. We have some serious to go.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Because you said eight siblings, I got eight siblings. Wow,
- 9:14Speaker 1: I'm just being real with you. I'm being real with you. Okay,
- 9:18Speaker 1: so and so and so but you're in it. I'm
- 9:20Speaker 1: telling you something. Every time I hear that song, it
- 9:22Speaker 1: takes me to a nightclub while I was dancing with
- 9:24Speaker 1: this young lady I was dating at the time, and
- 9:27Speaker 1: it was in se in Houston, Texas. I'm just let
- 9:30Speaker 1: you know, well, here you go, and I'll remember that
- 9:32Speaker 1: song because it was just lady leaned over y'all a
- 9:35Speaker 1: cute couple. Yeah, So every time I hear this beat,
- 9:40Speaker 1: first of all, it's a great song. You've done a
- 9:41Speaker 1: great transition to this song, you know. And and so
- 9:45Speaker 1: when I hear it, you know, just know that. So
- 9:48Speaker 1: when it was so every Tuesday, we pitched gas to
- 9:50Speaker 1: me and they go, okay, Jordan Bakes, I go, okay,
- 9:53Speaker 1: that name sounds familiar because nowadays, you know, uh, you
- 9:58Speaker 1: know you you you hear music on these different podcasts
- 10:03Speaker 1: and different platforms, and they don't announce the artists at all.
- 10:07Speaker 1: They just play the music or you're seeing or they
- 10:10Speaker 1: are they are the car to pop up with the name,
- 10:13Speaker 1: and so you don't really know the annunciation of a
- 10:16Speaker 1: lot of artists names nowadays. And so I go, and
- 10:18Speaker 1: then somebody go, can't running, can't keep running? Go what
- 10:22Speaker 1: I know that dude, that's my man. We gotta get
- 10:24Speaker 1: him on the show. And when we come back, we're
- 10:25Speaker 1: gonna leave this break. When we come back, Mr Banks
- 10:28Speaker 1: from Philadelphia with a siblings, who left Guy Co because
- 10:31Speaker 1: he was had to who relive his dreams, We're gonna
- 10:34Speaker 1: talk about you're gonna start a restaurant and the clothing lant.
- 10:37Speaker 1: You know, I know somethbody clothing lat My brother, Hi,
- 10:42Speaker 1: just Sean McDonald and we're listening to money making conversations
- 10:45Speaker 1: on the phone. He's born and raised in Philadelphia. Uh.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Jordan Banks is a Grammar nominated singer songwriter. Has a
- 10:53Speaker 1: song that every time I listened to it is on
- 10:55Speaker 1: my It's on my music list. It's called Can't Keep Running.
- 10:59Speaker 1: I had to bring that up because my show is
- 11:01Speaker 1: about entrepreneurship and we don't play music with man. When
- 11:04Speaker 1: you got a great song, I gotta acknowledge that. And
- 11:06Speaker 1: that's a great song because because a lot of people
- 11:09Speaker 1: do remixes of songs, it's what he does. It. He
- 11:11Speaker 1: reminds you of a song with some of his lyrics.
- 11:14Speaker 1: And I think that's really really cool that you did
- 11:16Speaker 1: that because a lot of people do when they use
- 11:18Speaker 1: it when they take a great beat, they're trying to
- 11:20Speaker 1: ignore it, and you you incorporate that into this acknowledging
- 11:24Speaker 1: this great this great song as well as new concept
- 11:27Speaker 1: that you're trying to it which I really love. Well
- 11:31Speaker 1: of course you know I U I ans to you
- 11:37Speaker 1: know that that that's something you know, touching the soul
- 11:42Speaker 1: and it's the would uh. It's one of the things
- 11:46Speaker 1: that inspired me to do music and just to have that,
- 11:50Speaker 1: you know, that connection to the people and to the
- 11:52Speaker 1: heart the team went to. Now when you were that's embrassive.
- 11:58Speaker 1: I think did you change phones and something because your
- 12:00Speaker 1: volume kind of changed there, sir? And yeah, because it's
- 12:04Speaker 1: because it's for um for much better because we have
- 12:12Speaker 1: Because the thing about is that, first of all, I'm
- 12:14Speaker 1: a fan and I'm going to continue uh to support
- 12:18Speaker 1: you and my social media and any platforms. So know
- 12:21Speaker 1: that this is a this is the ongoing relationship, and
- 12:24Speaker 1: it's important that you understand that because the fact that
- 12:26Speaker 1: you know, when I when I find young artists, I
- 12:29Speaker 1: know that when I was working with Steve Harvey and
- 12:32Speaker 1: we created the Steve Hardy Morning Show, music was an
- 12:35Speaker 1: important part of why we were so successful. When we
- 12:37Speaker 1: launched our national syndicated show out of New York in
- 12:40Speaker 1: two thousand five, and uh with artists out of that
- 12:44Speaker 1: Philadelphia market was so important and and all markets are
- 12:48Speaker 1: so important, but the artists of the R and B sound,
- 12:50Speaker 1: and I don't really like the way music is going
- 12:53Speaker 1: nowadays because of the fact that they're starting to bring
- 12:56Speaker 1: hip hop back into R and B songs like they
- 12:59Speaker 1: can't be played with out adding that that layer into it.
- 13:02Speaker 1: And when I hear great music like what you're doing,
- 13:04Speaker 1: you keep doing it, man, because people like me are
- 13:06Speaker 1: going to find a way to support it, because that
- 13:09Speaker 1: music cannot go away. And when you when you bring
- 13:11Speaker 1: back greatness. And Charlie Wilson is a great friend of mine,
- 13:15Speaker 1: So know that that that that you're talking to the
- 13:19Speaker 1: guy Charlie Wilson has performed and we said a round laughed.
- 13:22Speaker 1: You know, I knew Charlie wasn't we with the Gap band.
- 13:24Speaker 1: I knew Charlie was when we were rapping, when when
- 13:26Speaker 1: he had snoop, And I know I knew Charlie was
- 13:29Speaker 1: a nat you know. And so so when I hear
- 13:32Speaker 1: you do what you think you see, I see greatness.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I see greatness. In you, and I see greatness in
- 13:38Speaker 1: you because of the fact that you're willing to take
- 13:40Speaker 1: a risk and and I know, I know I've overcome doubt.
- 13:45Speaker 1: It's really amazing when people will doubt you when they
- 13:47Speaker 1: were because guess what. And I don't take that negative
- 13:50Speaker 1: because the general person, the general individual, they've been they've
- 13:54Speaker 1: been raised to go nine to five or eight to
- 13:56Speaker 1: five program And that not a negative when we say that,
- 14:01Speaker 1: because because there's entrepreneurs and in the life. That's why
- 14:05Speaker 1: I'm not mad at millennials. Millennials is they've they've been
- 14:09Speaker 1: given an opportunity to think outside of the box. When
- 14:12Speaker 1: I grew up, the box was you know you you
- 14:15Speaker 1: go to college. That's the only way gonna get a
- 14:16Speaker 1: good job. That's not the case anymore. You can be
- 14:20Speaker 1: rich and don't go to college. But you have to
- 14:24Speaker 1: be consistent. When I say the word consistent, what makes
- 14:26Speaker 1: you consistent? I see all these great artists you work with, Uh,
- 14:29Speaker 1: you know John Legend, Bad boy Leyla Hathwack been on
- 14:33Speaker 1: the show before, he's your cole Know her from l
- 14:35Speaker 1: A back in the day, No here from l A
- 14:38Speaker 1: meek Mill. How do you work with all these different
- 14:41Speaker 1: talents and then maintain who you are well first, you know,
- 14:49Speaker 1: all of those artists that you need have played a
- 14:53Speaker 1: huge role and just me being an artist, because it's
- 14:59Speaker 1: so crazy, like like with with the Meek Mill. He
- 15:03Speaker 1: was one of the artists that I worked with and
- 15:06Speaker 1: I wasn't even expecting to tap into my artistry the
- 15:10Speaker 1: way that I did with Meek Mill. But he definitely
- 15:13Speaker 1: like pushed me in and and and brought it out
- 15:17Speaker 1: of me just by you know, encouraging you know, me
- 15:22Speaker 1: as a singer and as a vocalist, because I started
- 15:25Speaker 1: off writing songs for these people, and every time I
- 15:28Speaker 1: would go on the studio, even with Keisha Cold, she
- 15:30Speaker 1: would hear my voice and then I would end up
- 15:32Speaker 1: on a track, and you know, it just never, it never.
- 15:36Speaker 1: I went to see fifty Cents with a friend of mine,
- 15:40Speaker 1: and my friends just told me this, you know, he
- 15:43Speaker 1: told me to start singing and and I did. In
- 15:45Speaker 1: fifty Cents threw me in the studio right away and
- 15:48Speaker 1: we ended up doing a song called Definition and Sexy.
- 15:51Speaker 1: And so I didn't know that I didn't I didn't
- 15:57Speaker 1: know that there was that that thing that was inside
- 16:01Speaker 1: and me that I was hiding. But these great artists
- 16:05Speaker 1: who who have inspired me over the years and even now,
- 16:10Speaker 1: uh kind of like planted those seeds. And honestly, sometimes
- 16:16Speaker 1: we forget to plant those seeds into into our brothers
- 16:20Speaker 1: and our sisters and our and and the people that's
- 16:23Speaker 1: coming you know behind us and even before us. You know,
- 16:28Speaker 1: we had we have to continue to plant those seasons.
- 16:30Speaker 1: So I've had some talented people and they really helped
- 16:35Speaker 1: plant plant to see of me even you know, pursuing
- 16:41Speaker 1: it at this level. So I'm truly grateful to have
- 16:45Speaker 1: worked with them, with those artists and you know, have
- 16:48Speaker 1: crossed their path and the music business because it's definitely
- 16:53Speaker 1: changing my change my focus and has also brought a
- 16:59Speaker 1: new a new creative journey as an artist in my life.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Well here's the funny part about being a songwriter. And
- 17:06Speaker 1: so he can he can attest to this. So when
- 17:09Speaker 1: you when you're a songwriter, you after you have to
- 17:12Speaker 1: sing the song. I know most yes, some people a
- 17:16Speaker 1: lot of songs writer sing the song correct. And so
- 17:18Speaker 1: so here's the deal. So they're in the studio, they go, okay,
- 17:21Speaker 1: let me hear the song, you know, so you know,
- 17:23Speaker 1: he starts singing and go, I know they started squinching,
- 17:26Speaker 1: huh what they still who is this dude? If the
- 17:33Speaker 1: next question who is this dude? And then the next
- 17:36Speaker 1: thing and go, okay, how can I work with? So
- 17:38Speaker 1: you was winning twice. You were winning twice with a
- 17:41Speaker 1: great song, and then you win to twice secondly with
- 17:44Speaker 1: a great VARs and then you had what they call
- 17:47Speaker 1: swam and uh and that that's the beauty of you
- 17:55Speaker 1: were just going there man, just doing your thing. And
- 17:57Speaker 1: then God blessed you with the clip understanding your humbleness
- 18:01Speaker 1: because you weren't going in there trying to get a
- 18:03Speaker 1: gig other than hey, I have a great song I
- 18:05Speaker 1: think will really go good with your voice and your
- 18:08Speaker 1: style with your albums, or let's just be your first
- 18:11Speaker 1: single that drops on your CD or whatever. And then
- 18:14Speaker 1: they heard you they went, wow, I got this is
- 18:17Speaker 1: a bonus track right right, right right. And I can
- 18:22Speaker 1: tell that you you have a lot of insight and
- 18:24Speaker 1: education on how the music business work, because it's almost
- 18:27Speaker 1: like you're telling me my life, you know, like you're
- 18:30Speaker 1: telling me like all the steps, so I know this
- 18:33Speaker 1: happened before, and you've seen these steps in the evolution
- 18:37Speaker 1: of a songwriter turning into an artist. I've seen it
- 18:40Speaker 1: and I love it. I love That's what I'm just
- 18:41Speaker 1: let you know we have a relationship now in the business,
- 18:45Speaker 1: and just invite you to call me for any mentoring advice.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Just call me like I give myself. I connect with you.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Thank you. I appreciate that need that it is what
- 18:55Speaker 1: it is. Okay, it is what it is. I started
- 18:57Speaker 1: money making conversation for this reason. I cannot leave this
- 19:01Speaker 1: earth with information that I can use to have somebody else.
- 19:04Speaker 1: And I have been. I have been in too minute studios.
- 19:08Speaker 1: It's not too many artists, like I said, Keshia Cole Kesha.
- 19:11Speaker 1: I met Keshia Cole when she was audition and she
- 19:13Speaker 1: wanted and she auditioned for me, and so then she
- 19:16Speaker 1: became a great autist. And she reminded me, I auditioned
- 19:19Speaker 1: for you with Sean and I said, oh yeah, and
- 19:21Speaker 1: because not because it was just not because I was arroicant.
- 19:24Speaker 1: It was just that I wanted to hear how great
- 19:26Speaker 1: she was. And then she went on to greatness and
- 19:28Speaker 1: still living the life of greatness as a song stocks.
- 19:31Speaker 1: And then you say, John Legend used to coming to
- 19:33Speaker 1: the studio all the time, one of the most professional
- 19:36Speaker 1: individuals I've ever met in my life. If you tell
- 19:38Speaker 1: John to be in a studio at six thirty am,
- 19:40Speaker 1: he had there six fifteen. He's there six fift all
- 19:45Speaker 1: the way, not complaining, not not tired, ready to do
- 19:50Speaker 1: the work. So when you see how great he is,
- 19:52Speaker 1: when you see he's all over the place with a music,
- 19:54Speaker 1: a music style that a lot of people questioned because
- 19:57Speaker 1: he wasn't doing traditional R and B. Something. People would say,
- 20:00Speaker 1: what type of music is he doing? And so when
- 20:02Speaker 1: I look at your music, Mr Banks, keep doing what
- 20:06Speaker 1: you're doing. Yes, sir, Yes, sir, don't worry about that
- 20:11Speaker 1: cubicle that you left, because you're not gonna You're not

- 20:32Speaker 1: and all those things, and plus guess what you can
