- 2:36Speaker 1: Please welcome to Money Making Conversations, my man, apprentice Penny.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Pretty good, pretty good. So I'll tell you something, Mr
- 2:45Speaker 1: penn Im said, Mr Pendent, because I saw your movie
- 2:47Speaker 1: twice and one day. So it's not often in my
- 2:50Speaker 1: life that I can say I saw the same movie
- 2:54Speaker 1: from beginning to the end. And we're talking about Uncorked
- 2:56Speaker 1: that's on Netflix twice in one day. So that's a compliment, man,
- 3:02Speaker 1: because of the fact that you know, first of all,
- 3:04Speaker 1: he has some people in that I really loved the
- 3:06Speaker 1: death nis Nisi Nash and Court Advance Um and so
- 3:10Speaker 1: talk about But before I get into store, just complimenting
- 3:13Speaker 1: all about the movie. Tell us about Uncorked the premise
- 3:16Speaker 1: and how how you developed it. Yeah, I mean it
- 3:21Speaker 1: really started from a place of you know, I wanted
- 3:23Speaker 1: to make sure I wanted to write, uh and direct
- 3:25Speaker 1: a movie, and I wanted to you know, obviously, it's
- 3:28Speaker 1: like I went to fund that felt kind of personal
- 3:29Speaker 1: because I could sort of, um, you know, find my
- 3:32Speaker 1: voice that as writing when you writing television, you know,
- 3:35Speaker 1: you're often writing in other people's voices, and so I
- 3:36Speaker 1: wanted to find mine. And I felt like I was
- 3:40Speaker 1: a big I love father's son dynamic stories, and I
- 3:43Speaker 1: often felt like with black fathers and son stories, usually
- 3:45Speaker 1: the spine up why the father that I have conflict
- 3:49Speaker 1: because the father was absent and I just wasn't my
- 3:52Speaker 1: experience and like a lot of friends of my un experiences,
- 3:54Speaker 1: and so I wanted to see and I thought, like
- 3:56Speaker 1: white people get to sort of have a experience in
- 3:58Speaker 1: my father some movies where they get the kind of
- 4:00Speaker 1: be basic. Like if you think about Good World Hunting
- 4:02Speaker 1: or Manchester About to See, you know that that that
- 4:05Speaker 1: you can get to be kind of regular. And I thought,
- 4:07Speaker 1: and being basically regular is what you find your humanity.
- 4:10Speaker 1: And so I wanted to see if my men to
- 4:12Speaker 1: be regular, not be you know, not about our pain
- 4:15Speaker 1: or our trauma. Is just to sort of like, this
- 4:17Speaker 1: is what life is like kind of an everyday basis
- 4:20Speaker 1: for this family. And so that's sort of what drew
- 4:22Speaker 1: me into like waiting to tell that kind of a story.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Right now, here's the thing. Now I'm watching the movie
- 4:27Speaker 1: enjoying it, laughing. It's kind of like almost like a
- 4:30Speaker 1: drama day. To me, it's comedy with a nice little
- 4:33Speaker 1: blended comedy stretched out through a dramatic movie with a
- 4:36Speaker 1: lot of emotional values. It's a romantic story, is a
- 4:40Speaker 1: family story, is a common of age story. So it
- 4:43Speaker 1: had a lot of a lot of descriptive moments in
- 4:45Speaker 1: the movie that I enjoyed, and but the detail that's
- 4:49Speaker 1: what really uh took me back. The detail of what
- 4:53Speaker 1: was what he was trying to accomplish, the lead actor
- 4:57Speaker 1: is trying to accomplish. Talk about that, is that something
- 5:01Speaker 1: personal or where did the detail come from? Yeah, I
- 5:06Speaker 1: mean in my real life, the sort of jumping off
- 5:09Speaker 1: point in front of the family was really like my
- 5:12Speaker 1: my grandfather started her furniture story Compton in the fifties
- 5:15Speaker 1: when my grandfather had a stroke and couldn't run at
- 5:18Speaker 1: full time. My father would happen to be a college time.
- 5:21Speaker 1: My father thought out of college, could no questions to
- 5:23Speaker 1: ask and took over the business. And I was the
- 5:25Speaker 1: next son in lawn to do that. And I didn't
- 5:27Speaker 1: really want to do that. I wanted to be a
- 5:29Speaker 1: writer and do other things. And so again I wanted
- 5:32Speaker 1: to talk about again like that that angle. And so
- 5:35Speaker 1: I knew when I wanted when I was writing the
- 5:37Speaker 1: story that I wanted one part of the family studies
- 5:40Speaker 1: to be a family business, to be sort of more
- 5:42Speaker 1: blue collar. Um. And so that's sort of how I
- 5:45Speaker 1: got to barbecue. And I knew I wanted the son
- 5:47Speaker 1: to do something that was a little bit more elevated
- 5:49Speaker 1: and creative and the way that I was doing something,
- 5:51Speaker 1: and I just felt writing would be kind of visually
- 5:53Speaker 1: not really that interesting. Um. And I took a trip
- 5:56Speaker 1: to Paris for a cousin's wedding decoration wedding, and I
- 6:00Speaker 1: didn't even drink wine at the time, but I was like,
- 6:02Speaker 1: if I'm ever gonna like wine, it kind of has
- 6:04Speaker 1: to happen here, you know. It's like if you go
- 6:06Speaker 1: to New Orleans, and don't like go Bo to New Orleans.
- 6:08Speaker 1: You just maybe you just don't like go Bo. So
- 6:10Speaker 1: I was like, Paris is the spot for wine and
- 6:12Speaker 1: so if I don't like to hear and so I
- 6:15Speaker 1: took a class and the guy made it really easy
- 6:17Speaker 1: to understand one and what I was drinking. And I said, oh,
- 6:21Speaker 1: like this should maybe be what the sun should want
- 6:23Speaker 1: to do. This is kind of cool. And that's really
- 6:25Speaker 1: how I stumbled into that arena. And I was watching
- 6:28Speaker 1: documentaries and movies about songs and things like that, and
- 6:31Speaker 1: it just became and obviously as you think about your
- 6:34Speaker 1: like food and wine or digital pairings, and the way
- 6:36Speaker 1: that the father obsessed about the wood is the same
- 6:39Speaker 1: way that people obsessed about the grapes, and they became
- 6:41Speaker 1: obviously very um you know, things that became connectors in
- 6:45Speaker 1: the movie um once. But that's sort of how I
- 6:48Speaker 1: found the world of wine. Well you know that I'm
- 6:50Speaker 1: talking to the writer, director, and producer of Uh. I
- 6:53Speaker 1: would say, hot, new movie there's on Netflix. I know
- 6:56Speaker 1: we all in these pandemic TI. I would say hot
- 6:59Speaker 1: because I watched it twice. I see you just get
- 7:02Speaker 1: you know, I really loved the movie because my wife.
- 7:06Speaker 1: She's a kind of seue of wine. Okay. So when
- 7:09Speaker 1: I when I watched the movie at my office, I went, man,
- 7:13Speaker 1: that the detail, you know that because he wanted to
- 7:15Speaker 1: be a wine Somalia right and uh, and so that
- 7:19Speaker 1: was his goal. His dad was, like you said, Uh,
- 7:22Speaker 1: his father was a barbecue owner. He dropped out of
- 7:26Speaker 1: school to be to take over the business, even though
- 7:28Speaker 1: he wanted to be a teacher. And then all of
- 7:30Speaker 1: a sudden that he didn't want to do it, just
- 7:32Speaker 1: like you had in real life. You didn't want to
- 7:34Speaker 1: do the furniture store. He wanted to be He wanted
- 7:36Speaker 1: to be a condiseue of wine. He wanted to be
- 7:38Speaker 1: and like he said, as a as a very exclusive
- 7:40Speaker 1: club to be able to accomplish that task. And so
- 7:43Speaker 1: so if I watched that, so I went. So I
- 7:45Speaker 1: came home and said, I said, baby, uh, I want
- 7:48Speaker 1: you to watch this movie because the detail in this
- 7:51Speaker 1: movie about this wine because I don't drink wine, and
- 7:53Speaker 1: so and so she was so so so you know,
- 7:56Speaker 1: but I'm just amazed at the detail. Thats what I'm
- 7:58Speaker 1: going on. And we're not talking about the how you
- 8:01Speaker 1: were setting up the barbecue and chopping it up that
- 8:05Speaker 1: that whole world, because that's my world right there. When
- 8:07Speaker 1: you're talking about Memphis. You I'm from Houston, Texas. I'm
- 8:09Speaker 1: a Texas boy. Grew up my nephew. He's one of
- 8:12Speaker 1: the best bobbycue people. Yeah, he one of the best
- 8:15Speaker 1: barbecue people in Houston, Texas. He got a little side
- 8:17Speaker 1: stand recognized her. He was on Kelly Clarkson for barbecue,
- 8:20Speaker 1: and so I know about barbecue. And so when I'm
- 8:23Speaker 1: watching the detail of the barbecue and then I'm watching
- 8:26Speaker 1: the detail on the whin, I'm going like, who is
- 8:29Speaker 1: this guy? You know, I said, Wow, the details. So
- 8:33Speaker 1: just talk about your attention to detail, Mr Penny. I
- 8:37Speaker 1: gotta respect Mr Penny. You missed a penny on this show. Okay,
- 8:43Speaker 1: I appreciate that. I appreciate that. I'm gonna call you Mr.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Big Daughter. Okay, yeah, I mean yeah, you know, I
- 8:50Speaker 1: mean we didn't like we don't keep it like that
- 8:52Speaker 1: and uh but no, I mean, you know obviously, you know,
- 8:55Speaker 1: I worked you know, on my other show from Insure,
- 8:58Speaker 1: Like I've worked with a lot of amazing actors. When
- 9:01Speaker 1: you learn a lot from you know, you know, like
- 9:03Speaker 1: you know, you just learned like from people who just
- 9:06Speaker 1: by how they work. And so that was one thing
- 9:08Speaker 1: that I felt like the movie had to be a
- 9:11Speaker 1: super spot on about it. It was like, like, you know,
- 9:14Speaker 1: Memphis is one of the how equated like the Mount
- 9:17Speaker 1: Russian cities the barbecue rights. So you got there. Surely
- 9:20Speaker 1: you have Texas barbecue, you have you know those Carolina barbecue,
- 9:23Speaker 1: you have this Is barbecue, and you have kind of
- 9:26Speaker 1: you know St. Louis, Kansas City barbue, kind of like
- 9:28Speaker 1: the barbecue. You know what I'm saying. The barbecue had
- 9:33Speaker 1: to do. Yeah, I mean it's real, right, And so
- 9:36Speaker 1: so I knew because the obviously in the movie that
- 9:39Speaker 1: the barbecue has to be so serious because that's the
- 9:42Speaker 1: dad is placed as a premium. I like, how important
- 9:44Speaker 1: the family business. So it's not just like you're doing
- 9:47Speaker 1: barbecue in l A. It's like you're doing barbecue a
- 9:49Speaker 1: place where like that's it's everything for us, and it's
- 9:52Speaker 1: it takes care of our family. It's more than just
- 9:55Speaker 1: the barbecue, right and so um so to me that
- 9:58Speaker 1: that just had to be official and so we Enlisten,
- 10:00Speaker 1: there's a lot of Memphis barbecue places that are especially
- 10:03Speaker 1: black family places, like we called cozy corner um, you know,
- 10:06Speaker 1: barbecue shop. The places that we hired. A lot of
- 10:09Speaker 1: the background actors that actually have lines all worked in
- 10:12Speaker 1: barbecue spots. And so because I needed them to know
- 10:15Speaker 1: what they were doing versus like having kind of extras
- 10:18Speaker 1: coming in not really knowing what they were doing, they
- 10:20Speaker 1: had looked like they knew. It was important that all
- 10:23Speaker 1: the background people know what they were doing, and so
- 10:25Speaker 1: that was grand. Then conversely, in the wine world, like
- 10:28Speaker 1: we had what one of our actors who played one
- 10:32Speaker 1: of the black song teachers is amazing black son named
- 10:36Speaker 1: d Lynn, who was also a part of the inspiration
- 10:39Speaker 1: for the movie too, and and so obviously to have
- 10:42Speaker 1: him read the script and and really be teaching me
- 10:45Speaker 1: as I was writing the script about wine and things
- 10:47Speaker 1: like that. And obviously on the set we had another
- 10:49Speaker 1: wine person they running rat issues like our on set person,
- 10:52Speaker 1: like our day to day to make sure everything worked
- 10:54Speaker 1: and make sure everything looks a hundred percent official in
- 10:57Speaker 1: terms of how they hold their labs, how they you know, smell,
- 11:00Speaker 1: how they taste, and how they how they do everything
- 11:02Speaker 1: you know, was so again that level of detail because
- 11:05Speaker 1: if you don't believe it, then you're just not going
- 11:07Speaker 1: to be into the movie. And and and the fun
- 11:10Speaker 1: part about it is that you used up and this
- 11:13Speaker 1: is a good word, comedic word. You used ignorance to
- 11:17Speaker 1: be funny. Like for instance, when he was saying he
- 11:19Speaker 1: wanted to be a Somalia and they go, you will
- 11:22Speaker 1: be you want to go to Samalia? You know, it's
- 11:24Speaker 1: just like and he goes, I ain't said nothing about Africa.
- 11:28Speaker 1: You know, it's like he's like, you know, your your humor,
- 11:33Speaker 1: your writing style, man is dead on. But again you
- 11:36Speaker 1: gotta have the talent to be to pull that off.
- 11:39Speaker 1: And you're casting and was dead on man dead on?
- 11:43Speaker 1: I I would know. I won't tell the movie, but
- 11:48Speaker 1: the Nissy Nash relationship, uh, just coming out there just
- 11:52Speaker 1: just niece is just brilliant. And uh and then according
- 11:55Speaker 1: to advanced his role as uh as a dad man
- 11:59Speaker 1: that he if any black man is over for you,
- 12:03Speaker 1: that's your dad. That's that's courting advantage your day. He
- 12:06Speaker 1: was your day. And so I was looking at my dad.
- 12:09Speaker 1: You know the statement he has come out by racism
- 12:12Speaker 1: but anything, it was just irreverence. But it was just
- 12:15Speaker 1: about the whole process. And then the sun and I
- 12:18Speaker 1: want you to say his name, because I messed up
- 12:20Speaker 1: the lead guy who who really carried this role throughout
- 12:23Speaker 1: and really sold that sold me on the fact that
- 12:27Speaker 1: it could actually happen for this young man. But it's
- 12:30Speaker 1: a journey. So I just we're talking about the movie
- 12:32Speaker 1: on Cork and I just wanted to compliment you on
- 12:35Speaker 1: the ability to put a dynamic family story, wrap it
- 12:39Speaker 1: around a romantic story, and then with a seed of
- 12:43Speaker 1: trying to find himself and seek an opportunity along the
- 12:47Speaker 1: way that he doubted himself and he kind of believed
- 12:50Speaker 1: in himself, then he doubted himself. In the end he
- 12:53Speaker 1: made a decision that this is what I want to do.
- 12:56Speaker 1: That's that's fantastic man. Congratulations, it's finely here the season
- 13:01Speaker 1: of celebration, and no matter how you celebrate with family

- 15:08Speaker 1: such an amazing costing um director that she was the
- 15:13Speaker 1: one that like, you know, like suggested like she's going
- 15:16Speaker 1: to suggest the cordine. She's the one that the girlfriend Sasha.
- 15:19Speaker 1: She's the one that of a cousin j T. She's
- 15:21Speaker 1: the one that was like, oh, momma, he's gonna be great,
- 15:23Speaker 1: Like she just helped put together um such an amazing
- 15:26Speaker 1: talent for me and uh and obviously they all just delivered.
- 15:30Speaker 1: I mean they're just also great. And see I got
- 15:32Speaker 1: a peak that this movie was coming down the line
- 15:34Speaker 1: because I had a young mentor young man I mentioned
- 15:37Speaker 1: when he was an actor way back in the day
- 15:39Speaker 1: when he was trying to act with a sister sister.
- 15:41Speaker 1: His name was Dotari Turner. And yeah, yeah, he came
- 15:46Speaker 1: on My show man. He told me about the movie, said, Rashawn,
- 15:49Speaker 1: when it comes out, he's gonna mess you up. It's
- 15:51Speaker 1: really good movie. And and he says, this is the
- 15:54Speaker 1: type of movie he wants to be involved, to tell
- 15:55Speaker 1: a good story. Great castinge and you guys did a

- 16:40Speaker 1: you can't buy a house wondering that. I just rent,
- 16:43Speaker 1: I just a lease because they say episodes, but I
- 16:51Speaker 1: wait and buying the cash after the episodes and finished that.
- 16:56Speaker 1: The girls, man, they mad at each other. They but
- 17:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna talk to the show, but I'm not gonna
- 17:02Speaker 1: give away the show. But this has been a dynamic
- 17:05Speaker 1: season man for for the relationship of the Ivan and
- 17:12Speaker 1: so talk about the steps of Oh, you know, because
- 17:15Speaker 1: I got a feeling I know where it's going because
- 17:16Speaker 1: I'm an old school writer, you know what I'm saying.
- 17:19Speaker 1: But when I saw her coming coming down at that
- 17:22Speaker 1: line of the promos when she's on vacation, I go,
- 17:25Speaker 1: I think I know where this is going. And uh
- 17:27Speaker 1: but yeah, okay, but you know about but but you know,
- 17:34Speaker 1: it's about relationship I can think about. I think you're
- 17:38Speaker 1: very gifted at that, you know, and being able to
- 17:40Speaker 1: write characters that are very human and normal and make decisions.
- 17:45Speaker 1: But this is what I'm complimenting you on um Insecure
- 17:50Speaker 1: is a very millennial type urban show. And then on
- 17:56Speaker 1: Court it's a family drama. Language is not even close
- 18:00Speaker 1: to the language and Insecure and you are naturally pulling
- 18:05Speaker 1: that off. That's a gift, my friend. You know, I
- 18:07Speaker 1: was a sitcom writer. I was talented, but believe me,
- 18:11Speaker 1: my skills didn't even come close to your life. I
- 18:13Speaker 1: could write a script, but you got a gift man.
- 18:16Speaker 1: And I'm not gonna sit on this show and act
- 18:18Speaker 1: like me being a sitcom right and you being a
- 18:20Speaker 1: sitcom right, that we were the same you are, your
- 18:23Speaker 1: skills said, is a blessing. And I got and I
- 18:25Speaker 1: get to see it every Sunday night on HBO, and
- 18:28Speaker 1: I got to get to see it probably gonna be
- 18:30Speaker 1: a third time on on Court on Netflix. Talk about
- 18:33Speaker 1: the whole process of being a show runner, your staff,
- 18:36Speaker 1: because we all know you don't do it by yourself,
- 18:38Speaker 1: and that amazing cast that you have with Insecure. Yeah,
- 18:43Speaker 1: I mean it really is a team that. I mean,
- 18:45Speaker 1: it really is a team effort. I mean we've been
- 18:48Speaker 1: each and I have been super blessed too. You know,
- 18:50Speaker 1: we like mostly had the same writers from the from
- 18:54Speaker 1: the first season, and so I think that brings like
- 18:57Speaker 1: a level of you know, people being super like familiar
- 19:00Speaker 1: with how we want to tell the stories and and
- 19:02Speaker 1: the way to tell stories and what works and what
- 19:04Speaker 1: doesn't work on our show, but still offering you know,
- 19:06Speaker 1: fresh new insight and fresh takes on it, uh, And
- 19:09Speaker 1: so I think that and obviously we have an amazing
- 19:11Speaker 1: kind between you know jay Evan Andsa of course, and
- 19:15Speaker 1: you know Amanda Seals, you know Natasha rock Well. I
- 19:18Speaker 1: mean so many amazing again, so much amazing kindly that
- 19:21Speaker 1: it just makes our job easier. And I always say, like,
- 19:23Speaker 1: when you first create a show, you know, the first
- 19:26Speaker 1: the hardest part at the beginning is like you sort
- 19:28Speaker 1: of write the character of the suit and then but
- 19:31Speaker 1: it's kind of off the rack. And the longer the
- 19:33Speaker 1: care longer the actors sits from the character, you start
- 19:35Speaker 1: tailoring the suit for the actors, so not a suit.
- 19:38Speaker 1: It's better because the actors getting more comfortable with the character,
- 19:43Speaker 1: you know, the writers getting more comfortable with the characters,
- 19:45Speaker 1: and then you get to get get deepers of the
- 19:47Speaker 1: character um and you can see like like to nuance it.
- 19:51Speaker 1: So it's been honestly, it's been a blessing to be
- 19:53Speaker 1: able to And you're absolutely right that that first season
- 19:56Speaker 1: of character development is rough because you don't really know
- 20:00Speaker 1: the relationships. But when you're into this fourth to go
- 20:03Speaker 1: into the fifth, you know, now you have the actors
- 20:06Speaker 1: coming up, and you didn't say something like that. I
- 20:07Speaker 1: wouldn't say that that's not my cats, you know what,
- 20:14Speaker 1: I'm telling the truth that because Yeah, they bought into
- 20:19Speaker 1: what you've created, and then all of a sudden they
- 20:21Speaker 1: want to keep it on course because of the fact
- 20:23Speaker 1: that that's why the characters are natural, and that's why
- 20:25Speaker 1: I buy into the anger that's happening between the two characters,
- 20:30Speaker 1: and and and it's gonna build up to I'm pretty
- 20:33Speaker 1: sure a tremendous season finale because of the fact that
- 20:37Speaker 1: it's relatable. I this is why I love it. Because
- 20:40Speaker 1: it's on HBO. There's not on Beach is nothing slam
- 20:42Speaker 1: on Beat is not on It's on HBO. We know
- 20:45Speaker 1: that's a dominant white network that's being renewed. That means
- 20:49Speaker 1: that the content that you're live delivering is relatable to everybody.
- 20:53Speaker 1: It's good quality content, and that's all you want as
- 20:56Speaker 1: as a talent. You want to you want you want
- 20:58Speaker 1: your your information to be welcomed by everybody, not to
- 21:01Speaker 1: be pigeonholed, you know. And that's brilliant. I've been blessed
- 21:05Speaker 1: the season to see chairs today are able to do
- 21:08Speaker 1: a name. I've been blessed to see to see your
- 21:11Speaker 1: movie Uncorked. Uh. Every Sunday night. I'm enjoying HBOS Insecure
- 21:18Speaker 1: my friend. Uh. I just wanted to bring on the
- 21:20Speaker 1: show and say, hey, brother, you're younger than me I I,
- 21:23Speaker 1: which is great. That means that, uh, you know, the
- 21:26Speaker 1: spike leads in the world are getting up there, and
- 21:28Speaker 1: I feel that our future in the directing and the
- 21:32Speaker 1: writing and the producing business and the film and television,
- 21:36Speaker 1: it's gonna be all right. Thank you well, I appreciate
- 21:41Speaker 1: I'm glad to be here. Thank you so much. Well.
