- 0:00The B -Side in boxing. B -Side shit. B -Side.
- 0:04B -Side. And the B -Side. You got a B -Side.
- 0:06The B -Side. B -Side. B -Side. B -Side. The B
- 0:10-Side thing. This is the B -Sides Boxing Podcast.
- 0:20Yeah, we already started, by the way. No intro.
- 0:22Just roll. Nah, I still gotta do the... Boxing
- 0:28B -sides. Boxing fucking B -sides. Boxing B -sides.
- 0:33What mess was that before the clap? You're going
- 0:39to have to go to fucking Patreon to find out.
- 0:42Dude, eating three triple burgers, you're getting
- 0:44the fucking clap. Jesus Christ. Dan Raphael.
- 0:50Dan Raphael. Oh, man. Joined by the homies Saul
- 0:58and Josh. How are you guys doing? We're good.
- 1:03We're good, we're good. We also have our special
- 1:06guest. Yeah, it's a crossover episode with Isaac.
- 1:11Here we go again. The rematch. Still not quite
- 1:16the B -sides versus casuals 2v2. But we all know
- 1:23that B -Side wins because it's boxing, so, you
- 1:25know. And boxing, yeah. Hey, we got tears. I
- 1:29do love me some boxing. I do love me some boxing.
- 1:34Yeah, you'd be surprised at how much boxing chatter
- 1:37goes on over there. Yeah. I will be honest, though.
- 1:41I will be honest that UFC these past couple weeks
- 1:43hasn't mattered in boxing, though. I will say.
- 1:46I got to hand it to you guys. Bro, this month,
- 1:48August, has been dire for boxing. It's been the
- 1:53most dire month of boxing in probably years,
- 1:56dude. Honestly. It's been a long time. I don't
- 1:59know, man. Matchroom Fight Camp was probably
- 2:02the worst month I've ever had in my life of boxing.
- 2:07When Eddie Hearn did that bullshit in his backyard.
- 2:10Since the pandemic, yeah. Okay, this is the worst.
- 2:14This is the worst. I was going to say, Fight
- 2:16Camp... This is horseshit. They tried to pretend
- 2:20that Alan Babbage was going to be... We got Alan
- 2:25Babbage's rise where he proposed to his girlfriend
- 2:32and shit after beating some drunk guy who was
- 2:37sitting in a food truck 30 minutes before he
- 2:41got out there. I mean, it's just a symptom of
- 2:44a changing sport right now. That's why it's kind
- 2:45of bad right now. Top Brain can't put on any
- 2:48shows. Bold and Boy lacks, you know, fighters
- 2:51to put on shows. Bold and Boy lacks everything.
- 2:53Yeah, they lack everything. Matchroom, their
- 2:55fighters just recently fought, or they're going
- 2:57to be put on a rehab season fight. You know,
- 2:59it was all downhill. It was all downhill when
- 3:02Triller went out of business. That's when it
- 3:06was downhill. That's a deep cut. The real Nexus
- 3:09one. I can't. I heard. Angela would say BLK crime
- 3:19on a podcast that's been stuck in my head for
- 3:22years at this point. Well, I think we must be
- 3:25woke then because we would never say that type
- 3:27of shit. Yeah, we're left -wing grifting, guys.
- 3:30We would never say BLK crime. Yeah. BLK crime.
- 3:34Who would say that? No one would ever say that
- 3:37to describe a shady money laundering front that
- 3:39would give Terrence Crawford more money than
- 3:41God. That is fucking nutty. We're going to get
- 3:44fucking canceled. Saul, you mentioned symptoms
- 3:49of a changing sport. So I wanted to ask the Ali
- 3:53Act. What are they calling it? The Ali Revival?
- 3:58Boxing Revival Act now? The changes that they're
- 4:02proposing to it? The Muhammad Ali Boxing Revival
- 4:07Act. There it is. Some bullshit. It actually
- 4:13is bullshit. It is an attempt to screw over the
- 4:15fighters. It's very blatant. That's what it's
- 4:17trying to do. This is trying to change it to,
- 4:19like, the UFC model, right? Yeah. Yeah, there's
- 4:24going to be a minimum, but it also basically
- 4:25gets rid of the, like, your promoter can't be
- 4:29your manager shit. That was the whole purpose
- 4:30of the act to begin with. It's bullshit, you
- 4:35know? I don't know why they're trying to change
- 4:36that shit. It's like, it basically throws out,
- 4:39like, the... I think the boxing fan misunderstands
- 4:43the purpose. The average boxing fan misunderstands
- 4:46the purpose of the Muhammad Ali Act. Because
- 4:50it's just like... The purpose isn't like a universal
- 4:52act to help fighters. It's like a very specific
- 4:57law meant to protect fighters from something
- 5:00that's screwed over Muhammad Ali specifically.
- 5:05And it's a really good act. Yeah, like the whole...
- 5:09Like, the whole point of your manager not being
- 5:12able to be your promoter as well is because it's
- 5:16so you can have two A, two voices, as well as
- 5:20your own, and so you don't get fucked. Like,
- 5:25your manager is supposed to be in your best interest
- 5:27and your promoter isn't. Yeah. But when they're
- 5:29the same person, usually you get fucked over.
- 5:33You have to fight Larry Holmes when you're fucking...
- 5:35You have to fight Larry Holmes and Trevor Burbick
- 5:38when you belong in a fucking literal care facility.
- 5:42Exactly. Tim Witherspoon getting dragged out
- 5:45of fucking rehab to fight a world title fight.
- 5:50Larry Holmes basically made no fucking money
- 5:52his whole career because of this guy. This act
- 5:57exists not because... The whole pretense is like...
- 6:01The reason why they're probably going to end
- 6:03up passing the revival act is because people
- 6:05don't know what the purpose of the original is.
- 6:07Not even that. It's just they know why it's connected
- 6:11to the White House. Yeah. No, but just, like,
- 6:14in terms of the, like, court of public opinion,
- 6:16I guess. Because, like, so many people would
- 6:20just be like, see, fighters aren't protected
- 6:23enough by the Muhammad Ali act. And I'm like,
- 6:26no, that's not the point of it. The point is
- 6:29so Bob Arum can't go, hey, I'm going to kill
- 6:32your whole family if you don't fight. I don't
- 6:36care that you're on drugs. They've been talking
- 6:39about, we're going to make sure fighters have
- 6:43full coverage insurance. I've seen it in the
- 6:48UFC, man. The TKO thing, Dana White crossing
- 6:53over into boxing. I've seen it, man. The pay
- 6:57model is not good over there. They make a really
- 6:58low percentage of the total revenue. It's not
- 7:02good. Even the new minimum that they're going
- 7:07to institute is lower than the actual minimum
- 7:09in most states. Yeah. The minimum in most states
- 7:16is a little lower than the proposed minimum in
- 7:20the bill, but state minimums are after taxes.
- 7:25versus the minimums that are proposed in the
- 7:27bill where like let's say you take home 900 bucks
- 7:31before for like a three or four rounder but that's
- 7:36after taxes you take that home the way the the
- 7:39bill structured is like okay it's a minimum thousand
- 7:42bucks but then you have to pay taxes on all of
- 7:44it is the take home does that include like paying
- 7:49your coach and your cornerman and all that no
- 7:53no so like so like like the whole part of the
- 7:59argument used by like the tko stuff is oh these
- 8:02guys only take home like 750 bucks for fighting
- 8:05and i'm like but that's after everything's paid
- 8:07for in some way because the state ensures that
- 8:12right yeah and your man you have a manager who
- 8:16is not your promoter who is acting in your best
- 8:22interest. Right, the promoter acts in the best
- 8:25interest of the event. Themselves. Right. But
- 8:28the way the bill is structured, which is why
- 8:31the UFC is so fucked, is that the promoter and
- 8:35the manager are the exact same. The manager is
- 8:37going to say, you're taking this cut, I'm basically
- 8:39pocketing the rest. It is in the combined manager
- 8:45-promoter's best interest to fuck you. I mean,
- 8:50like you said, this is the issue. Not enough
- 8:53people know what the act really is. So it's just
- 8:57going to get blown by. People go, oh, Al -Hayman
- 9:01violates the Muhammad Ali act. But the thing
- 9:03is, all these fighters have managers that then
- 9:12work through Hayman. Hayman is a manager for
- 9:15some, right? Yeah, but then... Then you have
- 9:19your, like, Lou DiBella. Like, then there's other
- 9:22promoters. It's never... He's never in the same...
- 9:25Samson, DiBella, yeah, Loeffler even, yeah. All
- 9:30these guys... So that's what I mean. Like, because
- 9:32of the act, it's not... Al Heyman is shaking
- 9:35hands with himself on something. Right. He sits
- 9:39at one end of the table only. Even if they all
- 9:42have a cooperative relationship, the fighters
- 9:45still end up getting the best deal they can.
- 9:48as a result of this act. And we're just going
- 9:51to turn that on its head. This is what fucking
- 9:55Dana White's been waiting for, right? Yeah, like
- 9:58he basically turns boxing into a fucking Walmart
- 10:02job. In my opinion, I think TKO's is going to
- 10:07become another boxing promotional company. Either
- 10:11that or it's going to become like OTX. But it's
- 10:13a net negative. if they get the act passed, though,
- 10:17just because, like, let's assume, like, let's
- 10:21assume PBC and, like, Al Heyman stay, like, with
- 10:24the, like, the moral, like, well, mostly moral
- 10:28cooperative arrangement they have, where, like,
- 10:32he doesn't sit at both sides of the table at
- 10:35one time. But, like, obviously, like, like, Frank
- 10:41Warren and Bob Arum, it's the good old days again.
- 10:47And, like... They're creaming at the thought
- 10:49of that shit. Yeah, like, Bob Arum will live
- 10:52another 20 years off of the fucking souls he
- 10:55steals with those renegotiated contracts. Like,
- 11:03that's what I mean, though. There's some guys
- 11:05who, like... Notice the silence of Bob Arum right
- 11:10now when it comes to this ad. Yeah, all the promoters
- 11:15are quiet. Yeah. Like, PVC is, like, traditionally
- 11:20quiet. They don't, like, again, they're going
- 11:22to, the assumption, at least my assumption, is
- 11:25that they're just going to continue operating
- 11:26how they have been because, like, this relationship,
- 11:29the relationship of, like, fighter, manager,
- 11:32promoter for the last, like, 20 years has brought
- 11:36them more cash than anyone else in the sport.
- 11:40In revenue. So there's no reason to fix what
- 11:46ain't broke. But I'm saying some of these other
- 11:48promoters are just like, they're quiet because
- 11:50if it passes, it's not just Dana who's going
- 11:53to show up and reinvent the wheel. Everyone else
- 11:57is just going to revert to, yeah, you're getting
- 11:59paid potato chips and fighting who I want you
- 12:01to when I want you to. Do you think we will see
- 12:06a TKO belt be made within the next five years?
- 12:10Oh, fuck no. Yes. Yes, but not in a way that,
- 12:15like, matters. You think it would be, like, IBO
- 12:19type? Like, just not legitimate? Not even IBO
- 12:21type. It's, like, how... Below that, even. Like...
- 12:25Because it won't even be, like, a regional belt
- 12:29type thing. It's, like, those flashy, like...
- 12:31Like, the YouTuber belt stuff. Like, the Misfits
- 12:34belt. Oh, like the Aztec belt. Yeah, like it's
- 12:38a ceremonial belt. You know how they do the BMF
- 12:42belt? Yeah. Yeah, that's basically the equivalent
- 12:46for it. They're going to get, like, two guys
- 12:48who just do fucking rock 'em, sock 'em robots
- 12:50who aren't great to fight each other, and they're
- 12:52going to be like, this is the best fighter. Or
- 12:56this is the most exciting fighter. UFC's already
- 12:59put their hands in boxing already, dude. Fucking
- 13:02Dana White with the bypass. Yeah, but it's basically
- 13:08just more shit to put on Fight Pass so he doesn't
- 13:12have to fill those dates. That's different. And
- 13:15the boxing that's on Fight Pass is run by the
- 13:19promoters that are signed to it. Yeah. 360 Promotions.
- 13:24They put the events on. So the pay and stuff
- 13:28is not... It's basically Dana White... paying
- 13:32those guys for the license to put it on Fight
- 13:34Pass so he doesn't have to fill dates and content.
- 13:38It's not Dana White directly organizing it. So
- 13:45this one, he's going to be like building it.
- 13:47Yeah. Isaac, how do you feel about, and be honest,
- 13:51be honest. We won't clown you or anything. Be
- 13:53completely honest. How do you feel about Dana
- 13:56White being in boxing? Dude, I mean, this is,
- 13:59I mean, I'll be the first one to say, dude, I
- 14:01hate Dana White. He does in UFC, like it's, like,
- 14:06I mean, I sort of am worried about boxing. I've
- 14:08seen how he's completely like whitewashed the
- 14:11sport of MMA. I mean, just complete, complete
- 14:13like monopoly. The fighter pay super low. I mean,
- 14:17the UFC, the quality of UFC content has been
- 14:20going down the drain in, you know, in recent
- 14:23years. It's just, everything just feels like.
- 14:27It's just like sanitized almost. It's just like,
- 14:30you know, not really like any vibes to it. I'm
- 14:32sort of worried what he's going to do to boxing.
- 14:34Yeah, yeah. What's weird, weirdly enough, what
- 14:38White ended up... The weird clash that is kind
- 14:44of like, at least it's a little obvious to me
- 14:47that is going to end up happening, is going to
- 14:49be that Dana's going to run shit like he does
- 14:52in the UFC and into the ground in terms of entertainment
- 14:54quality. But remember that, like, Turkey isn't
- 14:58here to make money. He's here to play with his
- 15:01action figures. So I think that's where the disconnect's
- 15:05gonna happen, because Dana's gonna be trying
- 15:07to make money from these events, and Turkey's
- 15:11gonna be like, what the fuck? Why aren't my action
- 15:14figures fighting? Well, I will say this, that
- 15:17fucking these first, this first TKO event, dude,
- 15:22is fucking ass. It is so buns. Seriously. Like,
- 15:28they have... I'm not saying he's playing with
- 15:31his... I'm not saying Turkey is good at playing
- 15:35with his action figures. We saw that. We're seeing
- 15:37this with the ring events. I understand. This
- 15:40guy is... I'm just talking about the event itself.
- 15:42Yeah. No, it's dog shit. It is dog shit. They
- 15:45have Colin Walsh fighting Fernando Vargas as
- 15:47the co -main. The co -main event, rather than
- 15:50Christian Ability versus Lester Martinez, which
- 15:52is a really good fight, I would say. Very good.
- 15:55But they have fucking Kyle Walsh versus Fernando
- 15:58Vargas Jr., a fucking Marv Nation fighter. A
- 16:00goddamn Marv Nation fighter. I'm not saying Turkey
- 16:03is any good at playing with his action figures,
- 16:06but at some point, Turkey will want to continue
- 16:11playing with his action figures, and Dana will
- 16:13want to cut down on pay and shit, and then that's
- 16:16the disconnect. Because then you're not going
- 16:19to be able to track any fighters. Yeah, like
- 16:21you can't just throw money and make your action
- 16:25figures fight. You're going to actually have
- 16:26to think and make it work. And I don't think
- 16:29Turkey wants to do that, but Dana will. That's
- 16:32where the disconnect is going to happen. I think
- 16:33Dana's doomed to fail in boxing just because
- 16:35the horse he's hitched his wagon to is literally
- 16:40only here to play with action figures and nothing
- 16:45else. It's sad. It's very sad. Like, if Dana
- 16:51hitched his ride with, like, Blatnovik, for example,
- 16:55like, back when Blatnovik was bankrolling Matrim
- 16:58USA and shit, that's when you would have seen
- 17:03this be a much more disastrous occurrence. Because
- 17:08Blatnovik actually wanted to make money back.
- 17:13Eventually, by building up... He put his faith
- 17:17in Eddie Hearn, so it didn't work out. But Blatnovik's
- 17:22end goal was to build up Matchroom USA and DAZN
- 17:25as a power broker in boxing and make that money
- 17:30back. And, like, we go from paying fighters a
- 17:34lot to very little. I don't think it'll happen
- 17:37here just because, like, the Russian oligarchs
- 17:41can run out of money. Until Saudi Arabia runs
- 17:47out of oil and slaves, the money is literally
- 17:51endless. Damn. And that's where Dana White's
- 18:00going to fail, just because Turkey would rather
- 18:02his name be praised by nerds on Reddit and Twitter
- 18:08for making a fight happen than to save... the
- 18:15money because at the end of the day it's like
- 18:19it's a it's a pr project and not uh it's a pr
- 18:22project that he happens to be invested in within
- 18:27the way like a 13 year old's invested in fights
- 18:29rather than like a business the business is the
- 18:34oil are we serious Not really. We are definitely
- 18:46conspiracy theorists, but it makes sense, right?
- 18:51Putting it this way, that Dana won't succeed
- 18:53now, but he could have succeeded when DAZN was
- 18:56starting up. That's true. Just because, yeah,
- 19:01the way I've been describing the bubble bursting
- 19:04isn't in the sport is doomed way. It's in Turkey
- 19:09gets bored and leaves. The sport just needs to
- 19:14be lifted up with a couple TV deals. Again. I
- 19:18feel like with fucking TKO, the biggest problem
- 19:21is he's going to be fighting talent. Because
- 19:23in all honesty, I really doubt that they're going
- 19:30to be getting any good talent, any exciting talent
- 19:32that they can make stars. Because the other promotional
- 19:36companies that have been here for decades now
- 19:38are struggling already to find stars. It also
- 19:42doesn't help that, like, everyone knows about
- 19:44Dana White and, like, because, like, the scam
- 19:50with Don King is that, like, despite all of what
- 19:54he does with fighters, like, he has his glory
- 19:56days where he ran the sport, right? So he can
- 20:01pull the scam on someone very stupid being like,
- 20:03look, I can take you to these heights. I've done
- 20:07it before. But with Dana White, his entire career
- 20:11has been boxing is dead, boxing is dead, boxing
- 20:13is dead. So, like, I don't think any, like, star
- 20:17is stupid enough to fall for it with Dana White
- 20:21compared to Don King. I feel like even Jake Paul
- 20:24is a better fucking mother than... That's true.
- 20:27But that's because Jake Paul... Jake, like, say
- 20:30what you will about Jake Paul, though, because,
- 20:32like, he doesn't have to invest in women's boxing
- 20:35and all things. He totally could have just bought
- 20:36a bunch of young prospects. He does have a prospect
- 20:41series. He does, but I'm saying in terms of,
- 20:45like, the headlining. Oh, right. Like, he could
- 20:46have totally purchased, like, at the point where
- 20:51he was starting up, Boots was a pretty cheap
- 20:53contract. Virgil was a pretty, like, these guys
- 20:56had pretty, like, Boots was a pretty cheap contract
- 20:58because he was fight by fight with PBC. Virgil,
- 21:04I don't know. He was the golden boy. Yeah, so
- 21:07you could have probably bought him out, honestly.
- 21:09Yeah. Young guys like fucking Schofield. You
- 21:16pick up all the third rack young, exciting guys
- 21:22and you start a promotion if you're Jake Paul
- 21:26and have that money. But instead, he decided
- 21:29to actually build a superior product. He has
- 21:34most of women's boxing in his stable. So that's
- 21:40what I mean. It's very good and impressive that
- 21:43he took his time building a quality promotion
- 21:47in a pretty ethical way when realistically he
- 21:54probably could have just bought his way in. Yeah.
- 21:58I may have that wrong though. Jake Paul is one
- 22:00of the more ethical. Promoters in the sport,
- 22:02I will say. Yeah. I think the only complaint
- 22:05I've seen is, like, Ashton Sylvie being like,
- 22:09they released me after I lost horribly. And slammed
- 22:13the guy who won. And I'm like, that's just the
- 22:16business sometimes. Unfortunately, that's the
- 22:18business sometimes. I mean, that's what they
- 22:21did with Anthony Sims Jr. But the thing is that
- 22:24the complaint is that they released him. Not
- 22:28that they didn't pay him or blacklist him or
- 22:31anything. Well, no, they did kind of blacklist
- 22:35Anthony Simms Jr. just a little bit. No, I'm
- 22:37saying the complaint for us, Ashton Silvey, about
- 22:40MVP. Oh, yeah. Yeah, like, if you think about
- 22:45it, all they did is say, hey, you're not an MVP
- 22:48fighter anymore, and it's not like we're not
- 22:50paying you. And, like, you know, the usual we're
- 22:54not paying you, you're blacklisted, don't even
- 22:56show up to your gym. Back in the old days. That
- 23:01is cooked. MVP is rather ethical. I'm not against
- 23:11Jake Paul in the sport. I'll sit through the
- 23:16bullshit if it means we have another promoter
- 23:20that actually has some vision in the space. He's
- 23:24done a crazy amount for women's boxing. I mean,
- 23:27it was on a Netflix card. I mean, they do big
- 23:31events. I mean, that was insanely massive. And
- 23:35it's not like he only sticks, like, Serrano on
- 23:38his undercards. Like, he literally specifically
- 23:42let her shine in three events. As well as promoting
- 23:49other women on his cards. Like, now he has, he
- 23:52signed Savannah Marshall, right? Most recently.
- 23:55And Terry Harper. Alicia Baumgartner. That too.
- 24:01You have all of women's boxing. It's good. Let's
- 24:07move to Tank and his charges being dropped. Domestic
- 24:16violence. Yeah. I'm not sure what else to say
- 24:21besides what a piece of shit. Yeah. The thing
- 24:27is, I feel like he still did it. Which time?
- 24:31He's done it in the past. History would support
- 24:35that, yeah. He already has a case. It's on the
- 24:40video, too, where he's choking that one woman
- 24:42out of the basketball game. I don't know. I don't
- 24:45know. Tank sucks. He's still probably the most
- 24:51entertaining watch in our sport. I disagree.
- 24:56In terms of, like, atmosphere for the fights?
- 24:58I'm not saying in terms of pure fighting style.
- 25:00I'm saying just, like, as an event. Yeah, I mean,
- 25:03he's still a big star. He's a big star. I don't
- 25:06know. I mean, number -wise, I think... Just as
- 25:09an event, like, you don't need to build under...
- 25:13Like, everyone else, you still have to sort of
- 25:15build an undercard. Tank, you don't have to build
- 25:19an undercard. Yeah, I mean, as soon as I started,
- 25:22he was probably one of the biggest stars in the
- 25:23sport, of course. You just don't have to build.
- 25:26An atmosphere, like, I think, honestly, I hate
- 25:28to say it, but, like, I think those brick cards,
- 25:32dude, those brick, like, an Anthony Joshua fight,
- 25:35dude, they get fucking turned up, dude. Type
- 25:39shit, dude. Oh, they do. Yeah, dude. I don't
- 25:45know. The fights... I'm just considering, like,
- 25:49quality of the fighter, quality of the fight,
- 25:52and, like, the... like, the event. Because it's
- 25:55not just the event, it's, like, fight week and
- 25:57everything in Vegas or Baltimore or wherever.
- 26:01Yeah, we'll see. It kind of gives you, like,
- 26:02an old feeling, like how it used to be back in
- 26:04the day. Yeah, like, Tank is a bit of an old
- 26:06-school star. You don't even, like, again, just
- 26:09the fact that, like, you can say there's a Tank
- 26:11fight on this day, you don't have to give a fuck
- 26:12about the undercard. Yeah. Like, even with, like,
- 26:16Canelo, AJ, you still, like, you still, like,
- 26:19ah, the undercard's really fucking stinky. Maybe
- 26:22I don't buy that, right? No. With Tank? No, but
- 26:29even for us, if they say, yeah, Tank's fighting
- 26:33Roach again, we're watching it. Oh, yeah, for
- 26:36sure. Numbers -wise. Canelo Crawford, for comparison,
- 26:40we're here. We just complained about how Mbili
- 26:44isn't higher up on the card. I'm still going
- 26:50to watch the fight. That's an amazing fight.
- 26:52Yeah, but it's a dialogue. There's a dialogue
- 26:55about the undercard that's present for these
- 26:58other guys that is never present for Tank because
- 27:00Tank is the show. He's the whole show. So as
- 27:05much as Tank sucks, he's a very... His presence
- 27:11kind of shows how a star should be. People like...
- 27:18He has good undercards, but the thing is that
- 27:21they're not stuck on to make it... They're not
- 27:26necessary. They're not necessary. You could put
- 27:28a bunch of British domestic title fights on a
- 27:32fucking tank fight in Baltimore. And you know
- 27:36what? It's still packed by the time he hits the
- 27:38ring. Yeah. Yeah, sure. I don't think that's
- 27:44something that any other fighter in the sport
- 27:46has. You don't you just don't need you don't
- 27:51even need to talk about the tank undercard. You
- 27:53can say tank is fighting and The interest is
- 27:57there. No, I disagree. I think you know is the
- 27:59one that is the dominant I think it was a piece
- 28:02of the sport frankly Numbers wise yes, but if
- 28:11I'm saying in terms of like like You still care
- 28:15about who Canelo's opponent is. You still care
- 28:17about the undercard. With Tank, it's just Tank's
- 28:20fighting. Well, we can't act like we weren't
- 28:22complaining about Roach before the fight. I mean,
- 28:25come on. Yeah, but we're still watching. Yeah,
- 28:28we're still watching. I was still watching Canelo's
- 28:30school. Yeah, no, I'm not saying Skull. I'm saying,
- 28:34like, John Ryder and Berlanga. Like, I didn't
- 28:37watch him fight John Ryder. That's what I mean.
- 28:42You have to draw the line somewhere. But with
- 28:45Tank, it's very... He would have to be fighting
- 28:48grade schoolers for me to not tune in. The thing
- 28:54is that I think you're kind of underestimating
- 28:56the casual audience of the Mexican community.
- 28:59They will turn up with Canelo no matter what.
- 29:01They always turn up with Canelo. It's known when
- 29:04Canelo fights. I don't know. I've had casual...
- 29:07I don't know. it's i know it's highly anecdotal
- 29:10but like casual friends in real life went from
- 29:13like like they know whenever tank fights they
- 29:16don't they won't know who the he's fighting they
- 29:19didn't even know rolly when he fought rolly but
- 29:21they knew tank was fighting but with canelo lately
- 29:24it's like oh is he still fighting like no hopers
- 29:28uh and it helps that like it the platform he's
- 29:33on is not great either the platforms he's been
- 29:36on which is part of it But I'm saying, like,
- 29:39at this moment, like, a tank fight has more allure
- 29:42than a Canelo fight. And, like, yeah, there was
- 29:46a point a couple years ago where it was the opposite.
- 29:50Basically, Canelo was the face, but you can only
- 29:55do bum of the month so much while there's another
- 29:58guy who... Matt, I can guarantee you that Canelo's
- 30:03skull probably did just as much as Tank Roach.
- 30:08I can guarantee you that. Yeah. And that's what
- 30:11fucking William Skoll did. I mean, that's probably
- 30:14the most unknown fighter that Camilo's ever faced.
- 30:19Yeah, but he had a nice record, though. He stole
- 30:22the face of the sport. People will come out to
- 30:23watch him no matter what. No matter what, dude.
- 30:26People are going to watch him. That's just how
- 30:28it is. That's how it is. I know. For Mexicans,
- 30:30we see that as an opportunity to have a day of
- 30:32partying, you know? It's a party. I just don't.
- 30:38I just think the broader American paying audience
- 30:42is what I'm getting at, really. Because it's
- 30:47just, like, Canelo fights seem like an inconvenience
- 30:51now, not to watch, just because the undercard's
- 30:55going to be shit. It's going to be under zone,
- 30:58and they're going to trap me into a nine -month
- 31:00contract where they refuse to let me cancel,
- 31:02and I have to report them for fraud. I mean,
- 31:05if you think about it, what was the last time
- 31:08you think about a good fighter that, like, people
- 31:10were actually excited for? It's Ryan, you know?
- 31:14Well, you're just thinking, like, guys, well,
- 31:18there's Ryan and Roach. People were excited for
- 31:20Roach, man. Like, people show up. And Hector
- 31:24Garcia, like, I'm not saying, like, hard cores.
- 31:27I'm saying, like, guys I'm at work with. We'll
- 31:30be like, I don't really want to watch the Canelo
- 31:33fight. It's tough to watch. But, like, Tank's
- 31:36fighting, they got it. They'll find illegal streams.
- 31:40It's just, like, it's hard. It's largely anecdotal
- 31:43on my end, but it's like Tank is the whole show.
- 31:49Canelo is starting to have to need a good opponent.
- 31:53I will say that I think where we're both at is
- 31:57pretty biased because you... Where I live? is
- 32:00mainly Hispanic, you know, Mexican community.
- 32:04It doesn't... Every time Canelo fights, dude,
- 32:07the grocery stores are packed. It doesn't help.
- 32:09For one reason, one reason only. It doesn't help
- 32:12the Mexican communities that, like, when I go
- 32:15and visit Mexico, these guys fucking hate Canelo.
- 32:19They're, like, the most Marco Antonio Barrera
- 32:21and Salvador Sanchez glazers you'll ever see.
- 32:27The big majority of Canelo's fanbase is Mexican
- 32:30-Americans. I go to Mexico and visit my grandparents
- 32:34and it's like, fuck, is that ginger fuck still
- 32:36fighting? They're old school, you know? I miss
- 32:39when a real fighter like Eric Morales was on
- 32:42TV and you could watch him for free. Yeah, they're
- 32:47just old school. They're just old school. But
- 32:49that's what I mean, though. It's probably just
- 32:53our lived experiences that lead us to... Similar
- 32:56conclusions with different guys. I don't know.
- 32:59What are the other posts at the call thing in
- 33:01this pod? Do you guys think Canelo's bigger star
- 33:04than Tank right now or what? Yes. Yeah, right
- 33:08now, yeah. Like, numbers -wise, I think Canelo's
- 33:11probably still doing the most numbers. I mean,
- 33:13my main point wasn't - My main point - Oh, we
- 33:17got a little lost. My main point was that, like,
- 33:19as much Tank sucks as a person, the sport needs
- 33:22him. No, yeah, we need all the stars we can get
- 33:25no matter what. The sport really needs him because
- 33:28he is the whole package as a star. And the controversy,
- 33:34again, I hate to call it controversy. He's just
- 33:37a fucking criminal. Yeah. But, like, the presence
- 33:40in the sport is needed, unfortunately. That's
- 33:44my main thing. Like, the sport needs him. I mean,
- 33:48sports always had bad guys, you know. Sports
- 33:50never had. There's been a time where there's
- 33:52been ethical guys running around. Boxing, man.
- 33:55It's guys who hit each other in the face with
- 33:57promoters who try to pay them less at every opportunity.
- 34:01That's just how it is. I think we've got to keep
- 34:05it rolling here. Let's keep it rolling. I'll
- 34:12let you go with that. Based on time... Well,
- 34:20we can quickly go over the next item on the news
- 34:23rumors and skip straight to previews because
- 34:25there's literally nothing. Yeah. We can just
- 34:29skip the break glass and save it. All right.
- 34:32So there is some Japanese boxers are dying at
- 34:40a pretty alarming rate. And the only move I've
- 34:47seen so far is that the Japanese Boxing Commission
- 34:50has lowered their regional title fights from
- 34:5312 to 10 rounds. And that's about it. One of
- 34:58the fighters that's currently, I think, in a
- 35:00medically induced coma was on an 8 -rounder.
- 35:05Yeah. The other one that died was on a 12, I
- 35:10think, is the case. It's just a stark reminder
- 35:16that this isn't a fucking game. Yeah, you don't
- 35:22play this shit. This isn't a game. This is brutal,
- 35:28man. The past a little bit of judgment from my
- 35:34soapbox that we have the luxury of sitting on.
- 35:41I don't think the issue is the rounds as much
- 35:44as it is just the culture. Yeah, absolutely.
- 35:48And I don't mean the culture of, like, never
- 35:51say die in a fight, because if it was never say
- 35:54die in a fight, then a lot of other, basically
- 35:58everywhere but the United Kingdom would have
- 36:02this issue, right? But the issues in the culture
- 36:10and training, because those sparring death matches
- 36:14all the time with little recovery time in between
- 36:19sparring is what causes a lot of this. Because
- 36:24if you just keep sparring and sparring and sparring
- 36:27hard, when you're on a weight cut, your brain
- 36:31literally has no opportunity to recover and rehydrate
- 36:35before a fight. because of the sparring culture
- 36:40even you get shook in sparring you know like
- 36:44in the like i'm gonna say in the west we have
- 36:48it's still bad sometimes like but we have a lot
- 36:52relaxed sparring culture where first of all sparring
- 36:56is you're not out to kill each other most of
- 36:59the time yeah you're training you're training
- 37:02you're getting better you're sharpening up but
- 37:04even then you spar once twice a week You're not
- 37:09sparring every single day of training to the
- 37:12death, pretty much. And that's the difference.
- 37:15You show up halfway to death's door, both from
- 37:19your weight cut, from whatever damage you carry
- 37:22from sparring, and the turnover between fights,
- 37:25that gives you no chance to even recover. So
- 37:28you're carrying, like, three, four consecutive
- 37:32camps of weight on yourself. and your weight
- 37:37cuts before stepping into the ring. And the culture
- 37:43from a refereeing, coaching, and fighter standpoint
- 37:48is to go out on your shield. So fundamentally,
- 37:54I know it's big to say from a soapbox, and you
- 37:58guys can disagree if you want, but the culture
- 38:00around sparring needs to change in Japan. I agree.
- 38:05I don't know how they would regulate. JBC is
- 38:11very strict on this stuff. Whenever they put
- 38:15their minds to something, they're extremely strict.
- 38:19I'm sure there's some way to regulate. If you
- 38:23don't want to regulate the intensity of sparring
- 38:25because that's difficult, you can regulate the
- 38:29amount of sparring that is done. the same way
- 38:34they regulate like even the most minor drug offenses
- 38:39and they used to regulate tattoos like they've
- 38:48it's a lot it's like tracking sparring like amount
- 38:51of times you spar is surely easier than regulating
- 38:54whether a guy has a tattoo or not or who he associates
- 39:00with in his free time or whether he's smoking
- 39:02a joint in his house like it's a matter of willingness
- 39:09to regulate and change the sparring culture and
- 39:13i think part of the changes need to be like at
- 39:16least for a period guys need to be more willing
- 39:18to stop fights like the culture needs to change
- 39:22too it's okay to live another day to change the
- 39:25sparring culture But again, I don't have the
- 39:30answers. We sit on, we sit in a soapbox across
- 39:33the world. Armchair analysts. That's just my
- 39:38point of view. Seeing, um, like having fought
- 39:44in the amateurs, not really sparring that much
- 39:47and not like having a relaxed, being part of
- 39:50a relaxed sparring culture and then seeing how
- 39:54they treat it over there. The only time sparring
- 39:57ever got hard for me was when, like, if you're
- 40:00doing something wrong, then, like, a bad habit,
- 40:03that's how they break it, is, like, whenever
- 40:06you don't pull your hand back into your guard,
- 40:10and, you know, like, people on mitts, like, they'll
- 40:12slap you on the face or something. Yeah. But
- 40:15it's something like that. I think it was very,
- 40:18for myself, it was mostly technical, light, like,
- 40:21we're working on something specific sparring,
- 40:23and then... very occasionally like basically
- 40:29right as fight camp is peaking but enough time
- 40:32they always gave us we always had two to three
- 40:34weeks with no sparring before an amateur fight
- 40:37like no like hard contact but right at the peak
- 40:42we'd always like have a couple hard three round
- 40:45spars just to like you know simulate fight momentum
- 40:52But the recovery time was always there. And again,
- 40:56if it got out of hand, it wasn't just I'm wailing
- 40:59on a guy or I'm getting wailed on. The culture
- 41:03was always you either pull it back, you lower
- 41:07the intensity a bit, or you just put a plug in
- 41:09it. And I think that's something that is absent
- 41:13in the culture. Very well thought out hypothesis.
- 41:21Yeah. Like, it's not provable because it's a
- 41:24social thing, but if the JBC really wants to,
- 41:30they need to start regulating how many times
- 41:32guys spar. But anyways, any other thoughts, fellas?
- 41:41I fully agree. I mean, hopefully for the fighters'
- 41:46sake, they can make some changes, like meaningful
- 41:48changes. Yeah. At this point in the last year
- 41:57and a half, maybe two years, there have been
- 42:02a handful of deaths. Something's got to change.
- 42:05Something serious has to change. Do you guys
- 42:09think there is going to be any change, though?
- 42:11Honestly, no. I think I'm a little more optimistic
- 42:16just because again, Japan is a more fair weather
- 42:23culture, I'd say, like, as a country. I feel
- 42:28like just the fact that two happened, like, this
- 42:31incident was repeated on the same card. The same
- 42:36way they regulate stuff like the tattoos and
- 42:39who you associate with and, like, small things
- 42:43like drinking and drugs and your PR stuff, the
- 42:47JBC has a higher chance of taking it seriously
- 42:50here. Just for optics. Well, shall we leave it
- 43:02there? Yeah. Unless anybody else wants to throw
- 43:07anything out. I mean, are we out of time? No,
- 43:13we can keep going, but it's up to you. We got
- 43:17previews to do. Just a few. Yeah. Okay. All right.

- 48:37Brock Jarvis, you may remember him. He's fighting
- 48:41again. Michael Zaroffa, still doing it. And at
- 48:50the top of the bill, the next great hope out
- 48:53of Australia, Nikita Zu. Younger brother of Tim.
- 48:57Okay, bro. Is he not the new hotness? Sam Goodman
- 49:04was last week. But there you go. That's the No
- 49:12Limit card. It'll be on... I'm not sure how to
- 49:16watch it. StreamEast. That whatever letters they're
- 49:24using. StreamEast .gd We're going to get banned
- 49:29for saying that shit, right? No, no. I'm saying
- 49:33hypothetically if I were going to pirate something
- 49:37which I'm not because I live in Australia and
- 49:42will pay for it legally I would not go to streameast
- 49:49.gb slash boxing dash streams to access this
- 49:55for free and I would not install uBlock Origin.
- 50:01I also do not like women. Hey, you said it, not
- 50:08me. Anyways. Allegedly. All right, let's keep
- 50:18it rolling. Friday, August 22nd. This is the
- 50:22prospect series for most valuable promotions.
- 50:26This will be on DAZN. Don't necessarily know
- 50:31who any of these people are. It should be a fun
- 50:34card, though. The matchmaking is always pretty
- 50:38good on these cards. Yeah. MVP doesn't pull punches.
- 50:44It's not Pro Box good because Pro Box is the
- 50:47fucking boom -boom saloon where, like, everything
- 50:50is super evenly matched. Obviously, MVP wants
- 50:53their prospects to win, but they're not slouches
- 50:56either. Moving on. Man, it's not the heaviest
- 51:05weekend. Saturday, August 23rd, Queensberry at
- 51:10Planet Ice. No one's watching this. Jack Rafferty
- 51:17versus Mark Chamberlain. That's your headline.
- 51:21If you're Lin, you're definitely going to be
- 51:24tuning in for all of it. I'm going to be cold
- 51:27and dead in the ground before I watch this shit.
- 51:32And once more, MVP at the Caribe Royale in Orlando.
- 51:39This is not... This is their fight night series,
- 51:43not the prospect. This is a good card. Yeah,
- 51:46there's some good names on here. This is an actual
- 51:49good card. Chris Avila and Ariel Perez should
- 51:53be fun. Lucas Body on the watch. Weirdly enough,
- 52:01I'm most interested in Jermaine Ortiz and Steve
- 52:05Claggett. That I'm looking forward to. That's
- 52:09for kids. That's actually pretty good. Jermaine
- 52:15Ortiz should totally win that, but... Claggett
- 52:19does put up a fight, at least. Very Trevor McCombie
- 52:25-esque type guy. I think Claggett sounds like
- 52:28such a throwback fighter, dude. Like someone,
- 52:30Muhammad Ali was fighting. An OG. Yeah, an OG,
- 52:33like, you know, like Jerry Cooley. Fuck is the
- 52:40guy who inspired Rocky again? What's his name?
- 52:45Not Billy Munn. Not Jerry Corey. Corey. Corey.
- 52:51Ugly Jerry Corey. No, no. Chuck Wepner. Chuck
- 52:54Wepner. Oh, Chuck Wepner. Chuck Wepner. Jerry
- 52:55Corey is different. He did fight Ali and lose
- 52:58miserably, but it was Chuck Wepner. Yeah. The
- 53:01guy in the red and blue shorts. Yeah. Looking
- 53:08at this, at the top two on the bill, it's a reminder
- 53:13that Islander Spanish is fucking wild. Oh, yeah.
- 53:20Yeah. So here are the names. Yankee El. And then
- 53:26Yo Enes. Fucking on the previous one, on the
- 53:32prospect card for MVP, Yo Elvis. What is happening
- 53:41here? I don't know. I just don't get it, I guess.
- 53:48But there you go. Man, that's all we got. That's
- 53:53all the previews. It's like we said, August is
- 53:57dire. Yeah. So we will see better days. Yeah,
- 54:05it's all right. September should be good. September.
- 54:08We'll be feasting from September to December,
- 54:10I think. Yeah. At least one good fight a month.
- 54:14You know? Yeah. I mean, in September, we got
- 54:17at least Canelo. October, we got Virgil and Boots.
- 54:20And then November, we got Homeboy. Vanavita.
- 54:26Yeah. And then December, I have... I can scratch
- 54:31my nuts, I guess. December, the... I mean, we
- 54:39were just talking about it, but the Japanese
- 54:41cards are usually really good. Actually, yeah,
- 54:43the New Year's card is going to be fire. December,
- 54:47Boxing Day, and New Year's. Always. They have
- 54:51just a week -long fight festival. They do kickboxing,
- 54:56boxing, wrestling. Man, the Japanese love their
- 55:03fighters, man. They love fighting. I wish boxing
- 55:07was like that over here. It would be really cool
- 55:09if we had something like that. Well, we just
- 55:11discussed it, but yes, in those aspects, yes.
- 55:16Oh, yeah. That's it. Let me do this. You've been

- 56:41toppings that take it from good to epic. But
- 56:44who has time for all that chopping and shit?
- 56:47Well, get ready to level up your noodle game
- 56:49with Ramen Bay. It's the ultimate topper that

- 56:53into your bowl in seconds. Imagine perfectly

- 57:05much ramen bae as your heart desires as you're
- 57:07boiling up your hot ramen. Stir and watch it
- 57:10transform. All right. So it's a light weekend.
- 57:15Parting words. Isaac, kick us off here. Yeah,
- 57:20I mean, I'm just going to say, like, I've been
- 57:22through this. multiple times. I mean, it comes
- 57:26in waves. You know, you have like these really
- 57:29light weeks for stretchers, but Mike Salsa at
- 57:32the end of the year is going to be stacked. We
- 57:35have a lot of good fights. We know November is
- 57:36going to be good. September, we're going to have
- 57:40boots in October. Virgil is coming back. I mean,
- 57:45just be patient. It comes in waves. We will be
- 57:49eating again. Yeah, I think the beginning of
- 57:53the year got us a little too fat. Oh, yeah. Anyone
- 58:01else parting words? Don't watch the Queensberry
- 58:08card on the 23rd. Please. Go outside for a walk.
- 58:15Do anything. Yeah, that'll be a good for us.
- 58:22I stole Josh's line, pro box good. Let's go for
- 58:24it, Schofield. No pro box this week, that's why.
- 58:29Still, pro box good. Agree, actually. Well, if
- 58:36that's it, then that's it for this edition of
- 58:38the Boxing B -Sides. We'll see you on the other
- 58:41side.
