- 2:52Speaker 1: a social media friend. I like her. She likes my page.
- 2:55Speaker 1: I like her page. I leave little nice comments, and
- 2:58Speaker 1: I've learned a lot of interesting things about her. She's
- 3:00Speaker 1: a music content producer based in Los Angeles, California. Please
- 3:04Speaker 1: welcome to Money Making Conversations Angela Am Joe Lovette Hey,
- 3:10Speaker 1: Mr McDonald, Hey, Hey that DJ moon Baby. It's me.
- 3:16Speaker 1: It's to me. I'm back. Thank you for having me.
- 3:19Speaker 1: First of all, you know, just you know, you know,
- 3:20Speaker 1: you came on my show and we kind of learned
- 3:22Speaker 1: each other and I was impressed with your with your
- 3:25Speaker 1: your whole set up. And I want to just review
- 3:27Speaker 1: a couple of things that we discussed because I think
- 3:29Speaker 1: it's important. And that's because the brand that you're building
- 3:33Speaker 1: and uh, the outlook, and you know, you're you're one
- 3:35Speaker 1: of those people who you know, you know, like myself.
- 3:38Speaker 1: You know you're going into the field it's not normal
- 3:42Speaker 1: and then it's very competitive and there are no rules
- 3:44Speaker 1: to how you achieve success. So what projects are you
- 3:48Speaker 1: currently working on right now? Well, you know, God has
- 3:51Speaker 1: always shifting me in a lot of different directions. You know,
- 3:54Speaker 1: I might have an idea of where I think I'm going,
- 3:57Speaker 1: but then He's always redirecting my steps. You know, I
- 4:01Speaker 1: wanted to award a couple of weeks ago. Yeah, I
- 4:04Speaker 1: saw on social media, come on, come on out there
- 4:07Speaker 1: looking good in front of the little the step and repeat,
- 4:10Speaker 1: So that was important. I'm still floating I'm still flure.
- 4:14Speaker 1: That was very full circle moment for me after overseeing
- 4:18Speaker 1: the Gospel Awards for the Grammys for the last ten
- 4:20Speaker 1: years and to win Best Gospel Album of the Year.
- 4:24Speaker 1: I just can't even tell you what that means just
- 4:27Speaker 1: for me personally. Okay, you kind of dropped a little bit. Now,
- 4:30Speaker 1: you went from double a CP to overseeing the gospel
- 4:34Speaker 1: department at the Grammys. So explain a little bit, because,
- 4:39Speaker 1: like I said, you you know your life, but the
- 4:41Speaker 1: average listener of you don't know. And that's why I
- 4:44Speaker 1: wanted to show to say there are steps to success.
- 4:46Speaker 1: To explain your participation in the Grammys, and then we're
- 4:50Speaker 1: gonna go all the way back to when you were
- 4:52Speaker 1: just DJ moon Baby out there just spending the spending
- 4:54Speaker 1: the turn table. Right, So let's talk about your Grammy experience.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I mean, you know, I spent the last decade of
- 5:02Speaker 1: my life and we talked about that a little bit
- 5:04Speaker 1: last time at the Grammy Awards. So I oversaw the
- 5:08Speaker 1: awards process, the entire thing for the gospel fields, so Christian, CCM,
- 5:14Speaker 1: traditional gospel, hip hop, everything, and then I also oversaw
- 5:18Speaker 1: television film, so all the awards that were given out
- 5:22Speaker 1: in those categories. I was responsible, so all the committees,
- 5:26Speaker 1: every entry that came across for consideration was on my desk,
- 5:30Speaker 1: so pretty much with the Double A CP process. You know,
- 5:34Speaker 1: I was entered in Best Gospel Album for the soundtrack
- 5:37Speaker 1: green Leaf that I produced for a second season of
- 5:41Speaker 1: Oprah Show. So all the people that I was nominated against,
- 5:46Speaker 1: Tasha Cobbs, you know, Marvin Sapp, Travis Green, cc wine
- 5:50Speaker 1: and like the heavy hitters, like I had awarded them
- 5:53Speaker 1: the last ten years. I had awarded all these people
- 5:57Speaker 1: on the other end, So now I'm up again. It's
- 6:00Speaker 1: all of them for consideration for this in the relation
- 6:04Speaker 1: how do how do they vote? How does that voting happen?
- 6:06Speaker 1: How did you know? Can you reveal that how they
- 6:08Speaker 1: how they you nominated and then people vote on it? Correct? Yeah,
- 6:13Speaker 1: it was actually open to the public for the first
- 6:16Speaker 1: time this year with a p n T. So this
- 6:18Speaker 1: was a public decision, I believe. You know, there was
- 6:21Speaker 1: obviously the private membership in Double A CP voters, but
- 6:25Speaker 1: you know, obviously the public votes. They loved green Leaf,
- 6:28Speaker 1: and they loved the music, and you know, the show
- 6:31Speaker 1: was nominated as a Drama of Best Supporting actress Lynn Whitfield.
- 6:35Speaker 1: So the show itself was nominated, but the only thing
- 6:37Speaker 1: that brought home that trophy was the music. So that
- 6:40Speaker 1: was something very dear to me. Yeah, that the music
- 6:44Speaker 1: stood out. And I mean, to win Best Gospel Album
- 6:47Speaker 1: of the Year. It wasn't even best Soundtrack, you know,
- 6:49Speaker 1: which is what it was, the found track one best
- 6:52Speaker 1: Gospel Album. So literally, like to win that award means
- 6:56Speaker 1: everything for me. That's full circle and it's divine and
- 6:59Speaker 1: it's God to do. And then I just can't even
- 7:01Speaker 1: say how he put a spotlight on me right now.
- 7:03Speaker 1: So that with that spotlight shining and now you know,
- 7:07Speaker 1: because you know you just you know, you just a
- 7:10Speaker 1: music content producers supervisor on green Leaf. Now let me
- 7:14Speaker 1: ask you this so so because I want to go
- 7:16Speaker 1: back a little bit, because there are steps to getting
- 7:18Speaker 1: to where you are at, because I started looking at
- 7:21Speaker 1: the entire bio, because we didn't even talk about the
- 7:23Speaker 1: fact that you were a DJ, you did radio. How
- 7:27Speaker 1: How does want Because I get these questions all the
- 7:29Speaker 1: time for people who are producers, how do you start
- 7:31Speaker 1: making these transitions? Or is it luck or being at
- 7:34Speaker 1: the right place at the right time. How do you
- 7:37Speaker 1: start making these transitions in life, and and obviously you're
- 7:41Speaker 1: willing to keep going out on faith because of decisions
- 7:44Speaker 1: you feel a better for your life by moving forward.
- 7:46Speaker 1: How do you How did you transition from being a
- 7:49Speaker 1: one of the popular DJs on the West Coast to
- 7:51Speaker 1: doing what you're doing now? Well, let's never luck, you know,
- 7:55Speaker 1: I don't believe in luck incidence. But you know, at
- 7:58Speaker 1: the end of the day, for me, you know, it
- 8:01Speaker 1: was always a bigger plan than a bigger picture. You know,
- 8:03Speaker 1: I'm not someone so just see what's in front of me.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Whatever that I end up, you know, getting into, I
- 8:09Speaker 1: always see the big picture of where that can lead me.
- 8:13Speaker 1: So you know, the DJ was the passion, it was
- 8:15Speaker 1: the love. Music was just a part of me. Like
- 8:17Speaker 1: growing up, I was the kid on the back of
- 8:18Speaker 1: the school bus that everybody wanted to sit next to
- 8:20Speaker 1: with the boom box like, so if I could think
- 8:23Speaker 1: back as far as I could go, I mean, the
- 8:25Speaker 1: first record I ever played was Stevie Wonder How that
- 8:28Speaker 1: than July on a Fisher Price in preschool. So I
- 8:30Speaker 1: was DJ Moonbay before I ever knew I was a djer,
- 8:33Speaker 1: you know. So I was always on this path in music,
- 8:37Speaker 1: but I always loved the business. And then we talked
- 8:39Speaker 1: about that before, So you know, I looked up to
- 8:41Speaker 1: Sylvia Rohne and Diddy and Cathy Hughes and all these moguls,
- 8:45Speaker 1: and I've always seen myself in that place. I've always
- 8:49Speaker 1: seen myself going in that direction. So, you know, the
- 8:52Speaker 1: Grammys that was strategic for me. Like when I went there,
- 8:54Speaker 1: it wasn't, oh, I just want to work for the
- 8:56Speaker 1: Grammys this cube. No. I understood the magnitude of what
- 8:59Speaker 1: that organization and ment to the music business and the
- 9:01Speaker 1: platform that it would give me if I engaged and
- 9:04Speaker 1: became a part of that organization on the inside and
- 9:07Speaker 1: as a member, you know, originally from the outside. So
- 9:10Speaker 1: everything I do is strategic, but it also is God
- 9:14Speaker 1: guiding my steps, and it is divine timing. I believe
- 9:17Speaker 1: in timing. Timing is everything, you know, just because I
- 9:20Speaker 1: foresee myself somewhere at a certain point by the time
- 9:23Speaker 1: I'm twenty five or thirty, that does not always unfold
- 9:26Speaker 1: exactly the way I see it, but I continue to
- 9:29Speaker 1: walk into my steps towards where I want to see myself.
- 9:32Speaker 1: So it's very important one to envision where you see yourself,
- 9:36Speaker 1: and two to be able to execute and continue to
- 9:39Speaker 1: walk closer to what that is and it looks like
- 9:41Speaker 1: for you. And that's why I'm right now. I'm still
- 9:43Speaker 1: on this journey. Like you know, Greenleaf was amazing, you know,
- 9:46Speaker 1: and it was a great accomplishment, but there's so much
- 9:49Speaker 1: more for me to do. You know. God has now
- 9:51Speaker 1: redirected my steps again. And now I'm producing a show,
- 9:55Speaker 1: co producing a show with TMZ and BT. And you know,
- 9:59Speaker 1: I didn't even see that coming. And that literally came
- 10:02Speaker 1: the weekend that I was going to attend the Double
- 10:04Speaker 1: A CP Awards. In the following week, I win the award.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Now the next week I'm starting at TMZ. So you
- 10:10Speaker 1: know you and in a million years, I wouldn't have
- 10:13Speaker 1: ever thought after watching that show almost every night like
- 10:15Speaker 1: everybody else, but I would be sitting there with Harvey Levin,
- 10:18Speaker 1: you know. So what is your What is the show?
- 10:22Speaker 1: What is the show? So it's called rack Rant, So
- 10:26Speaker 1: Rackel Harper who you see on the show, you know,
- 10:28Speaker 1: the outspoken young lady on there. She's basically getting a
- 10:32Speaker 1: spin off show which will be a late night show
- 10:34Speaker 1: thirty minutes and it'll be celebrity entertainment. It's a really
- 10:38Speaker 1: different produced format than TMZ itself, but it's her being herself,
- 10:42Speaker 1: you know, talking to a list celebrities on location. And
- 10:46Speaker 1: pilot episode is Amber Rose Problem and you know, a
- 10:50Speaker 1: rapper up and coming money bag yo. But we're shooting
- 10:53Speaker 1: now until April, and I'm pretty much responsible for all
- 10:57Speaker 1: talent that's gonna be booked on that show and a
- 10:59Speaker 1: lot of the aative stuff. Cool. Okay, we're about to
- 11:01Speaker 1: go to the break, but well, I want to just
- 11:03Speaker 1: let you know that, uh, I want to continue this conversation.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I know we've talked about some things in the past,
- 11:08Speaker 1: but you know, I'm in Atlanta now, I'm a whole
- 11:10Speaker 1: new audience. I'm introducing DJ moon Baby. You're a whole
- 11:14Speaker 1: new audience. You bought a bigger that heart read the
- 11:17Speaker 1: radio podcast. I don't think I was a little podcast
- 11:19Speaker 1: back in the day when I had to you you. You
- 11:21Speaker 1: just came over because you just thought Rushawn was cool. Back,
- 11:26Speaker 1: DJ move Baby, right back with her. We'll be right

- 13:34Speaker 1: and celebrities and you learn the secrets of success on
- 13:36Speaker 1: the phone. Right now learning her secrets of success is
- 13:40Speaker 1: my good friend. I'm gonna calling my good friend because
- 13:42Speaker 1: I follow on social media. You know, I always always engaged.
- 13:45Speaker 1: I always give her hype, I give her love. I
- 13:48Speaker 1: try to give a motivation because she's a rising star,
- 13:51Speaker 1: Angela m jolivat DJ moon Baby, I like to call it.
- 13:56Speaker 1: You know, I'm teasing when I when when I when
- 14:00Speaker 1: I first interviewed you, and you start talking about the Grammys,
- 14:03Speaker 1: and if you get locked into that little world, it
- 14:06Speaker 1: almost comes across like your conservative, you know, like you
- 14:09Speaker 1: just a you know, a conservative. They know I saw this,
- 14:12Speaker 1: you know, corporate. There you go, corporate. That's the proper world. Corporate.
- 14:14Speaker 1: And so when I started following you and I start
- 14:17Speaker 1: you said, I saw be interviewing uh Snoop Dog and
- 14:21Speaker 1: all these different people, and you're doing you you really engage.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Am I right or wrong that you engage a lot
- 14:27Speaker 1: more in social media? And why is that? Why is that?
- 14:31Speaker 1: I mean, you know, I'm for the underdog. That's like
- 14:33Speaker 1: my whole emo with doing business period, Like I love
- 14:37Speaker 1: giving platforms to artists and like yourself, you know, rising
- 14:40Speaker 1: thoughts entrepreneurs. So my eye is always on the post
- 14:43Speaker 1: of what's going on, Like I'm constantly looking for talent
- 14:46Speaker 1: online you know, it's really important to me explaining at
- 14:50Speaker 1: what you're saying. You said you're constantly looking for talent online,
- 14:52Speaker 1: because that's a that's an end way. Are you are?
- 14:54Speaker 1: You could somebody go to your website or your your
- 14:57Speaker 1: your social media page? How is that? Of course you
- 15:00Speaker 1: could go to moon Baby media dot com and always
- 15:03Speaker 1: reach out to me or on social I'm at DJ
- 15:05Speaker 1: moon Baby everywhere, and of course Angela Jollivet you can
- 15:08Speaker 1: google me. But you know, for me, like I've had
- 15:11Speaker 1: you know, my stock obviously in the indie space, I
- 15:14Speaker 1: knew what it was like on my road to success
- 15:17Speaker 1: to be in that position. Want in some visibility, you know,
- 15:20Speaker 1: so I never forget that. I've always promised myself like
- 15:23Speaker 1: no matter how far I go, I always want to
- 15:26Speaker 1: still remain humble and know what it was like to
- 15:29Speaker 1: be at this star point. So I know what it's like,
- 15:32Speaker 1: and I want to continue to help other people that
- 15:34Speaker 1: I see the light in to rise if I can.
- 15:37Speaker 1: If there's anything that I could do to push somebody forward,
- 15:40Speaker 1: that's my whole em o. You know that's what I'm about.
- 15:43Speaker 1: I want us to go together, you know, you know,
- 15:45Speaker 1: it's it's really interesting because you used the word corporate
- 15:47Speaker 1: because I kind of feel the more and more I
- 15:49Speaker 1: talked to you that you had a plan or your
- 15:52Speaker 1: planner or your person that goes about saying, you know,
- 15:55Speaker 1: like you said, like you told me, early is not luck.
- 15:57Speaker 1: You know, you know, you you position your self and
- 16:01Speaker 1: I've set goals and this is where i want to be.
- 16:04Speaker 1: And I hear that tone and I just see this.
- 16:07Speaker 1: I just see this young lady out there djen but
- 16:09Speaker 1: DJN on a mission with a plan that you this
- 16:12Speaker 1: is just a stepping to stone your dj and to
- 16:15Speaker 1: get to it. I mean, you know, for me, the
- 16:19Speaker 1: thing is or sign like I couldn't plan my life
- 16:22Speaker 1: if I wanted to. You know, I'd be very honest
- 16:24Speaker 1: with you because when I try to do it my way,
- 16:26Speaker 1: he says, do it another way. You know. But it's
- 16:29Speaker 1: about having a vision, you know, having a vision period
- 16:33Speaker 1: and walking towards it. He will guide you where it
- 16:35Speaker 1: is you need to go. You know, the plans that
- 16:38Speaker 1: I saw right now where I am right now, I
- 16:40Speaker 1: didn't imagine it where I am right now completely. You know,
- 16:44Speaker 1: I thought I was gonna be somewhere else. But you
- 16:45Speaker 1: have to stay open. That's what I feel like. The
- 16:48Speaker 1: main thing is never be closed minded or think something
- 16:51Speaker 1: has to happen this exact way, because it's not always
- 16:55Speaker 1: going to be that way. So you have to be
- 16:57Speaker 1: you know, agile, and be able to move and be
- 17:00Speaker 1: fluid because he's gonna take you exactly where you want
- 17:03Speaker 1: to go if you have that passion in your heart
- 17:05Speaker 1: and desire to do something and you walk towards it.
- 17:08Speaker 1: I believe in doing that. That is how I live
- 17:11Speaker 1: my life now. I want to talk about people who
- 17:13Speaker 1: are afraid to change, or people who are afraid to
- 17:16Speaker 1: take that next step. Because you were you know, Grammys
- 17:19Speaker 1: Recording Academy, it's it's the best of the best, you
- 17:22Speaker 1: at the top of your field. You over television. This
- 17:25Speaker 1: comfy's comfy, you know. But but but you know comfortable
- 17:28Speaker 1: and can get comfortable, right but you but you said that.
- 17:31Speaker 1: I guess what did you? What? What what was running
- 17:33Speaker 1: through your mind while you was comfy, while you was comfortable?
- 17:36Speaker 1: Why you would I gotta get out of here. I
- 17:39Speaker 1: think I gotta go, Like I can't spend my whole
- 17:42Speaker 1: life here, Like there's too much more for me to do.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Like I know I'm gifted, you know, in a humble way.
- 17:48Speaker 1: I know he has put something inside of me to
- 17:50Speaker 1: do something more, you know. And what about now you
- 17:55Speaker 1: know the name says popping up on your shoulder. You know,
- 17:57Speaker 1: I know what I mean? You know they uh, I
- 18:03Speaker 1: know because you know, I was at IBM. I just
- 18:04Speaker 1: worked at IBM, and I was a corporate exact you know,
- 18:08Speaker 1: and uh had my degree in mathematics, and I wanted
- 18:11Speaker 1: to be a comedian. And so when I told people
- 18:13Speaker 1: that I wanted to be a comedian, you know, they
- 18:16Speaker 1: looked at me. First of all, they couldn't even under it.
- 18:17Speaker 1: They couldn't even fathom how I was gonna get paid
- 18:19Speaker 1: because their level of comedians were like Richard pryor Eddie Murphy,
- 18:23Speaker 1: you know, and they were looking at me, going, you
- 18:25Speaker 1: are nowhere near them, fellow. Okay, so I don't even
- 18:28Speaker 1: understand how you're gonna get money when they're getting all
- 18:30Speaker 1: the roles. And so so when I when I say that,
- 18:34Speaker 1: I kind of got a little history about, you know,
- 18:37Speaker 1: because you you were you know, if you talk about
- 18:40Speaker 1: music the Grammys, is that is top doll. You said,
- 18:43Speaker 1: everybody in the country knows exactly what you what you
- 18:46Speaker 1: work when you say Grammars, and you know it's a
- 18:49Speaker 1: major show on television. You know, when people get a Grammy,
- 18:52Speaker 1: they put it on social media, put it on magazines.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Everybody hold their Grammys and all that because it's like
- 18:57Speaker 1: top honor. It's the top honor. It's so here you are.
- 19:02Speaker 1: You know, you know you're running things. Now, let's go
- 19:04Speaker 1: and put this put it right. You run into television
- 19:06Speaker 1: and film division, and you're running all the gospels. So
- 19:09Speaker 1: all the gospel stars know who you are. They know
- 19:12Speaker 1: who you are, and all the producers know who you are.
- 19:15Speaker 1: The labels know who you are. So you've got a
- 19:17Speaker 1: lot of juice at this point. You know you are
- 19:20Speaker 1: willed in a position of power and authority. So how
- 19:24Speaker 1: does in your minds that shine, I got more to
- 19:26Speaker 1: offer than I got more blessinges I need to reach?
- 19:29Speaker 1: How does how do? How did? How did you block
- 19:32Speaker 1: out that fear factor that the direction that you may
- 19:34Speaker 1: go may not be good for you? Well, you know,
- 19:38Speaker 1: I want to grant me too. You know I'm not
- 19:41Speaker 1: sitting there, you know, giving them out here. So in
- 19:48Speaker 1: order to do that, you cannot work there. And that
- 19:51Speaker 1: is what God did for me. He told me it
- 19:53Speaker 1: was time to go, and it was literally a conflict
- 19:56Speaker 1: of interest for me to stay there because I was
- 19:59Speaker 1: now in line for a nomination for the green Leaf
- 20:01Speaker 1: Soundtrack in the category I used to oversee a double
- 20:06Speaker 1: conflict because it was gospel and television film, so obviously
- 20:10Speaker 1: I have a soundtrack and I have a gospel album.
- 20:13Speaker 1: So it was very clear at that point that this
- 20:16Speaker 1: was his divine appointment to leave there. And you know,
- 20:20Speaker 1: I didn't have to make the decision. He made it
- 20:22Speaker 1: for me. And I tell you, that's the best feeling
- 20:24Speaker 1: in the world, because I didn't have this limbo in
- 20:27Speaker 1: my heart of should I give all this up? And
- 20:30Speaker 1: it's funny you say that, because my boss came in
- 20:32Speaker 1: my office before I left the Grammys a couple of
- 20:35Speaker 1: weeks before and sat there, and it keeps replaying in
- 20:38Speaker 1: my head after I won the Double A CP Award
- 20:40Speaker 1: six months after I left, and he said to me,
- 20:44Speaker 1: are you sure you want to give up all this?
- 20:46Speaker 1: And I hear that after I won that award, and
- 20:49Speaker 1: I'm like, give up everything, and I wouldn't standing here
- 20:53Speaker 1: holding this now, and I wouldn't be where I am now,
- 20:56Speaker 1: receiving the accolades because when you're in that corporate environment,
- 21:00Speaker 1: you obviously don't have the same platform. Is when you
- 21:02Speaker 1: leave somewhere and do something on your own, you know
- 21:05Speaker 1: you're not able to, you know, have that sort of
- 21:09Speaker 1: interface because you're under their brand. You know, you're under
- 21:12Speaker 1: their CEO in there, the public figure. You know, you're
- 21:16Speaker 1: not getting that same visibility. Even though I had all
- 21:19Speaker 1: this power and I'm this person overseeing the gatekeeper of
- 21:22Speaker 1: this category in this world, you know, you're still not
- 21:25Speaker 1: getting that same visibility publicly as you would on your own.
- 21:29Speaker 1: So all I can tell you is it is the
- 21:32Speaker 1: best thing that's happened to me. I'm very happy with
- 21:35Speaker 1: the decision I made. Six months later, here I am
- 21:38Speaker 1: and I know is off to a phenomenal start. I
- 21:42Speaker 1: can't even imagine, you know happy, You're you're very happy.
- 21:49Speaker 1: But could you just give somebody some advice? Somebody who's
- 21:52Speaker 1: sitting on the edge contemplating. You know, people tell them, no, no,
- 21:56Speaker 1: you're stupid, No, no, they don't make any sense. What
- 22:00Speaker 1: advice would you give somebody who's hearing the negative, who's
- 22:03Speaker 1: fear and change? Who really this is what they want
- 22:06Speaker 1: to do, but don't really see the end results That's
- 22:09Speaker 1: what it really stops you because you know, when you
- 22:11Speaker 1: go out there on your own, there's no guarantee that
- 22:15Speaker 1: you're gonna get a check every day, or the health
- 22:17Speaker 1: insurance payment is going to be every every every month.
- 22:20Speaker 1: So what advice you would you give somebody just to
- 22:23Speaker 1: just go forward? What advice I mean I tell anyone?
- 22:28Speaker 1: You know, obviously, be very strategic if you make a
- 22:31Speaker 1: move like this. You know, people say, you know, you
- 22:33Speaker 1: have to take a risk and walk out on faith,
- 22:36Speaker 1: but God didn't tell you to be silly. You know,
- 22:38Speaker 1: you still have to pay your bills, if you have kids,
- 22:40Speaker 1: you have a mortgage, you have so you have to
- 22:42Speaker 1: be strategic when you make this move, you know, and
- 22:44Speaker 1: you have to plan for it. You know. In my case,
- 22:47Speaker 1: like I said, it was very clear that he had
- 22:50Speaker 1: created this room and opportunity after a decade of my life,
- 22:54Speaker 1: Like I thought I was going to leave there sooner.
- 22:56Speaker 1: I thought I was gonna get in there four years,
- 22:57Speaker 1: five years, and I was gonna be on my way
- 22:59Speaker 1: to the next you know, But it took me a
- 23:02Speaker 1: decade of my life. So everything is about timing, and
- 23:05Speaker 1: you just have to be prepared. Like I would never
- 23:07Speaker 1: advise anybody like, oh, just quit your job and go
- 23:10Speaker 1: try to do whatever necessarily without a plan in place.
- 23:14Speaker 1: So it's about planning, vision, faith, and execution. So if
- 23:19Speaker 1: you are on the verge right now and you're over
- 23:21Speaker 1: where you are and you feel like you can't take
- 23:23Speaker 1: it anymore and it's time to walk out and say peace, like,
- 23:26Speaker 1: just make sure you have a plan in place, some
- 23:29Speaker 1: sort of plans, and he will take care of you
- 23:31Speaker 1: the rest of the way. My friend, you're telling the truth.
- 23:35Speaker 1: I'm so happy I got you back on the show.
- 23:37Speaker 1: I'm so blessed that you're in a situation my relationship
- 23:40Speaker 1: with you to hear that you have great things happening
- 23:42Speaker 1: for you in the future on BT with TMZ and
- 23:46Speaker 1: uh always let me know. I'm a fan. I want
- 23:48Speaker 1: to keep motivating. I want to keep motivating you to
- 23:51Speaker 1: success because you deserve it. You have a life that
- 23:53Speaker 1: I've lived for myself because I had to make that
- 23:55Speaker 1: tough decision. I have and I have not looked back.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Have that been about the rose yest Heather? I thought
- 24:01Speaker 1: I couldn't make it to the next day. Yes, but
- 24:03Speaker 1: guess what, DJ Moon Baby, I'm a fan, Thank you.
- 24:09Speaker 1: I appreciate you. Thank you so much for keeping your word.
- 24:11Speaker 1: You said you're gonna have me back, so I appreciate you.

- 25:08Speaker 1: lot of things that he's doing out there. High impacts
- 25:10Speaker 1: people's lives and giving opportunities. How his business is really,
- 25:15Speaker 1: I think it creates social change. My next guest is
- 25:18Speaker 1: the vice chairman of e Many magazine. Please welcome to
- 25:21Speaker 1: Money Making Conversations, Willard Jackson. Really, I'm doing fantastic. Really,
- 25:33Speaker 1: you know, you know you're you know the funny thing
- 25:36Speaker 1: about me and you you know, we were text each
- 25:39Speaker 1: other and we should already posted that. I posted that
- 25:42Speaker 1: for you, will I thank you, thank you for looking
- 25:44Speaker 1: out for me, brother, because that's the relationship we have.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Because the fact that you know, we're like you know,
- 25:49Speaker 1: when when saw each other in problem about eight months.
- 25:52Speaker 1: But but but the beauty of our relationship is that
- 25:54Speaker 1: we keep supporting each other and keep being there for
- 25:58Speaker 1: each other if we need something from us from a
- 26:00Speaker 1: motivational standpoint or from a social media post, because we
- 26:04Speaker 1: know that that's how this business works, in this relationships. Absolutely,
- 26:09Speaker 1: And you know, Rushan, you and I man, we have
- 26:11Speaker 1: been tendered spare as brothers in the in the cause
- 26:15Speaker 1: from the first moment we met. And uh, you know,
- 26:20Speaker 1: I love you like a brother and we're here to
- 26:22Speaker 1: support each other. Man, And uh, I'm really really happy
- 26:27Speaker 1: to be on your show this morning. I want to
- 26:29Speaker 1: talk about, you know, the show basically money Making Conversation.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Is it really an interesting show because of the fact
- 26:35Speaker 1: that I really, I really want to talk about allow
- 26:38Speaker 1: a person like you, a successful business man, to explain
- 26:41Speaker 1: to everyday people are entrepreneurs. So I maybe at your level,
- 26:46Speaker 1: so I might just be small upstart businesses. How what
- 26:49Speaker 1: what does it mean to be an entrepreneur? You know,
- 26:54Speaker 1: rush It means, um, you know, one taking really taking
- 27:02Speaker 1: responsibility and putting yourself in a situation where for me,
- 27:08Speaker 1: where I didn't have a glass ceiling over my head, okay,
- 27:12Speaker 1: And so for me, being an entrepreneur meant freedom, um,
- 27:18Speaker 1: you know, freedom to be the person I wanted to be,
- 27:21Speaker 1: Freedom to go out and earn a living, you know,
- 27:24Speaker 1: for myself, and being in a position to control my
- 27:28Speaker 1: own destiny. And so for a lot of people, you know,
- 27:32Speaker 1: entrepreneur isn't mean different things. But for me, that's what
- 27:36Speaker 1: it meant, man, is being able to control my own
- 27:40Speaker 1: destiny without a glass ceiling over my head. Now, but
- 27:44Speaker 1: that's now, that's now Will you talk like that? Are
- 27:49Speaker 1: you talking very confidently? Now? Now? When you dropped out,
- 27:54Speaker 1: there a lot of uncertainty was it was was was
- 27:57Speaker 1: out there? Do you are you still uncertain like that
- 28:00Speaker 1: you still have levels of doubts? Or what keeps you motivated?
- 28:03Speaker 1: Because I remember one day we were sitting down there.
- 28:06Speaker 1: I just love buying businesses. I just love buying stuff.
- 28:10Speaker 1: I love invested, And it was like a genuine thrill
- 28:13Speaker 1: in your voice, you know, and he was like, this
- 28:16Speaker 1: excites me. That that that that that it's like like
- 28:18Speaker 1: a new brand of exploration for you from an entrepreneurship standpoint.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Because the fact that you're not satisfied and you're willing
- 28:25Speaker 1: to diversify your portfolio, which is even more crazy, and
- 28:29Speaker 1: the sence that most people just you know, they stay
- 28:32Speaker 1: in their lane. You know, I'm talking about stay in
- 28:34Speaker 1: their lane. They go, I know this that I'm happy
- 28:37Speaker 1: with this, I'm making a lot of money doing this.
- 28:39Speaker 1: But you, my friend, diversified. Why is that or that
- 28:43Speaker 1: just keeps you motivated? Well, it's it's it's it's a
- 28:48Speaker 1: it's a lot of things. One crution. I first of all,
- 28:53Speaker 1: you know, I started my first business my senior year
- 28:58Speaker 1: in college, and and it goes all the way back to,
- 29:04Speaker 1: you know, the lessons that my grandfather taught me, man,
- 29:07Speaker 1: when I was a young kid, he said, son, go
- 29:10Speaker 1: to college, get a business degree to putting use for yourself.
- 29:15Speaker 1: And and my grandfather was an entrepreneur his entire life,
- 29:19Speaker 1: and so I grew up looking at and seeing that,
- 29:24Speaker 1: you know. So when I went to college, man, it
- 29:27Speaker 1: was the only option I had was to start my
- 29:30Speaker 1: own business. So at that point, rush, And I'm gonna
- 29:34Speaker 1: tell you, the biggest hurdle I had to overcome was
- 29:38Speaker 1: the fear of jumping out there and trying to do it.
- 29:42Speaker 1: And and so it took me a while to really
- 29:45Speaker 1: overcome my fears. And once I put together the plan
- 29:50Speaker 1: of action, I targeted the business opportunity that I wanted
- 29:55Speaker 1: to come after, and I overcame those those fears. Man,
- 29:59Speaker 1: I just jumped out there and and from there's been
- 30:02Speaker 1: a faith walk. And uh now they were in fear.
- 30:05Speaker 1: Now that pops up a lot, and and and I
- 30:08Speaker 1: use it in my tone too. And I when I'm
- 30:10Speaker 1: talking about people are because I've telling them that fear
- 30:13Speaker 1: and fear is a good thing too, because fear means
- 30:16Speaker 1: you're about to do something different, You're about to challenge
- 30:18Speaker 1: your life. So don't look at fears a negative word,
- 30:21Speaker 1: because fear slides you into another category because a lot
- 30:24Speaker 1: of people are going to work every day because of
- 30:27Speaker 1: the fact that they are unhappy and they fear change,
- 30:30Speaker 1: they fear they unknown, and you're that's that's what you're saying,
- 30:33Speaker 1: you said, Rashan, They're no guarantees. And that's what Ted
- 30:37Speaker 1: has a general tendency to stop you, is that, Wow,
- 30:39Speaker 1: I'm gonna stay at this job because guess what if
- 30:42Speaker 1: I leave? What if that job closed? You know, people
- 30:44Speaker 1: just start putting up roadblocks, They just put blocks of
- 30:47Speaker 1: their success. So so how did you, young guy, because
- 30:51Speaker 1: people are listening as an entrepreneur, how did you overcome
- 30:55Speaker 1: those fears, all those uh which are usually tied to change.
- 31:00Speaker 1: How did you overcome those? Well, like I said, I
- 31:04Speaker 1: really man, I started really reading a lot of motivational
- 31:09Speaker 1: type when I was in college, and I started buying
- 31:14Speaker 1: into the notion that you know, you have to walk
- 31:19Speaker 1: by faith and once you have a plan of action,
- 31:24Speaker 1: you know, I developed a conviction that, hey, failing is
- 31:29Speaker 1: not an option. This was gonna be the path that
- 31:32Speaker 1: I was gonna take in my life, and whatever the consequences,
- 31:37Speaker 1: whatever the successes, whatever the failure, whatever. I was willing
- 31:41Speaker 1: to accept that. And so as a result, you know,
- 31:46Speaker 1: I jumped out there and well it was interesting. And
- 31:50Speaker 1: going back to your earlier questions, and once I jumped
- 31:53Speaker 1: into business, you know, I ended up having some really
- 31:58Speaker 1: good mentors, man that really helped me along the way
- 32:05Speaker 1: to overcome different issues in business. And I give example,
- 32:12Speaker 1: I my college roommate, his dad owned hospitals, and so
- 32:18Speaker 1: coming out, you know, I grew up in Denton, Texas,
- 32:21Speaker 1: you know, a small town, I've never really been exposed to,
- 32:24Speaker 1: you know, these level of business people when I got
- 32:26Speaker 1: to Houston, and so I didn't even know you could
- 32:30Speaker 1: own a hospital. And not only did I not know
- 32:35Speaker 1: you could own the hospital. I thought you had to
- 32:37Speaker 1: be a doctor to be to own a hospital. So
- 32:41Speaker 1: but my roommate's dad, he said, listen, will hear you
- 32:44Speaker 1: don't have to be a doctor to own the hospital.
- 32:47Speaker 1: You know. He was a businessman, and so he hired
- 32:51Speaker 1: doctors and they took care of that point. He was
- 32:56Speaker 1: the business guy to make sure they had the resources
- 32:58Speaker 1: to do what they do back h Rush and that
- 33:02Speaker 1: freed me up, my man, and to the point where
- 33:06Speaker 1: I started casting a water net looking at opportunities, you know,
- 33:11Speaker 1: on a broader basis, And so that allowed me to
- 33:16Speaker 1: go into all kinds of different opportunities. Yes, once you
- 33:21Speaker 1: realize that you don't have to be an expert, hire
- 33:24Speaker 1: the expert. Yes, Sir, hired the experts. So as a result,
- 33:29Speaker 1: as a business guy, you know, I've on trucking companies,
- 33:34Speaker 1: I've on staffing companies. Okay, let's stop at that staffing
- 33:37Speaker 1: company because I want to talk about that, because because that,
- 33:40Speaker 1: to me, is a game changer, and so many people are,
- 33:44Speaker 1: especially people were coming out of college. I remember when
- 33:47Speaker 1: I came out of college, you know, I would I
- 33:50Speaker 1: work for temporary employment agencies, which is which is your
- 33:52Speaker 1: staffing type companies? Correct? Yes? And and my my my
- 33:57Speaker 1: younger brother called me. His sou graduated from college in
- 34:00Speaker 1: d C. He said, Rashan, he's having trouble trying to
- 34:04Speaker 1: get a job. I said, look, he needs to go
- 34:06Speaker 1: to a staffing company. I said, this gives him an
- 34:09Speaker 1: entry way into a job. And basically, if they like
- 34:13Speaker 1: you more, sometimes they'll hire you full time. Because I said,
- 34:18Speaker 1: a lot of people are missing the boat. I'm talking
- 34:20Speaker 1: to young people and even adults who are out there
- 34:22Speaker 1: trying to look at these full time jobs are missing
- 34:25Speaker 1: the boat on the advantages that these staffing companies can
- 34:28Speaker 1: offer to them. Can you expand on that through you
- 34:32Speaker 1: exactly right? And and what people don't realize and what
- 34:37Speaker 1: I try to promote out there is so we're staffing,
- 34:40Speaker 1: and so we do we do contract staffing in the
- 34:43Speaker 1: area of light industrial, we do um I T professionals,
- 34:51Speaker 1: you know, clerical, administrative accounting, all of those different discolotes
- 34:56Speaker 1: what we what you find rushan, especially with the watching
- 35:00Speaker 1: one thousand companies to big companies, the best entryway to
- 35:06Speaker 1: get into those companies is through a staff because what
- 35:11Speaker 1: they'll do, they'll contract a person from a company like us.
- 35:17Speaker 1: They would then have the opportunity to check them out
- 35:21Speaker 1: for six months or however long on an assignment, and
- 35:24Speaker 1: the ones that are really excelling, the ones that they
- 35:27Speaker 1: really like, they'll then hire them full time. And so
- 35:32Speaker 1: they get that chance to really you know, vet people
- 35:35Speaker 1: out before they bring them on and put them on
- 35:38Speaker 1: their payroll, give them all those benefits and all those
- 35:41Speaker 1: kind of things. So the number one gateway into corporate America,
- 35:47Speaker 1: I would suggest to you is through working with a
- 35:49Speaker 1: staffing company. Thank you, because they control those initial opportunities
- 35:55Speaker 1: with most of these major companies. And I tell people
- 35:58Speaker 1: all the time because because verse of all, when you
- 36:00Speaker 1: go through a staffing company, I'm talking abo a major corporation,
- 36:02Speaker 1: you don't worry about unemployment issues. They don't have to
- 36:05Speaker 1: worry about health benefit issues. All that is very and
- 36:09Speaker 1: it's been going on for years, you know, years, and
- 36:11Speaker 1: a lot of people missed the boat because of the
- 36:14Speaker 1: fact that I and I applaud you not only for
- 36:18Speaker 1: the having this type of company, because you affect people's
- 36:21Speaker 1: lives in a positive manner. Because if people understand the
- 36:24Speaker 1: system that you created through your staffing companies, that look,
- 36:29Speaker 1: if you have a trouble trying to get a job,
- 36:30Speaker 1: come to me, I could probably that same company. Did
- 36:33Speaker 1: you probably having difficult to get an application? I could
- 36:36Speaker 1: probably get you own in a temporary higher situation. You
- 36:39Speaker 1: go over there, blow the doors off of them naty
- 36:42Speaker 1: days and however that little cycle period is they could
- 36:45Speaker 1: offer you. It could transition you into the company right
- 36:48Speaker 1: into the Hey, that's that's really the avenue to get
- 36:54Speaker 1: in there. And if you look at most corporate America,
- 37:00Speaker 1: they have what's called a contingency workforce. That's that's us,
- 37:05Speaker 1: that's the contract employees that they have. Okay, more and more,
- 37:10Speaker 1: more and more corporations are expanding to if they look
- 37:16Speaker 1: at their workforce. You can look at anyone of these
- 37:19Speaker 1: companies workforce, they'll have thirty to forty of the entire
- 37:24Speaker 1: workforce as contingent labor, which are staffing, you know, coming
- 37:30Speaker 1: from these are employees that are actually on staffing companies
- 37:34Speaker 1: payroll providing all of this different you know, these different
- 37:38Speaker 1: uh filling these different positions. And I love it, I
- 37:42Speaker 1: love it, I love it, and more people should understand
- 37:45Speaker 1: that that opportunity is available. We're gonna be right back,
- 37:47Speaker 1: and we didn't even mentioned Ebony Jet yet. And that's
- 37:50Speaker 1: why you know, I brought you on the short as well,
- 37:52Speaker 1: but I wanted people to understand the full scope of
- 37:54Speaker 1: Willard Jackson. We'll be right back with more from Sean

- 39:49Speaker 1: Money Making Conversations is to show where I interview industry
- 39:51Speaker 1: decision makers, CEO, small business owners and celebrities and you
- 39:55Speaker 1: learn the secrets of their success and hard work on
- 39:58Speaker 1: the phone right now, device chair, Ebony magazine, The diverse,
- 40:03Speaker 1: the versatile. I'm gonna do it if you give me
- 40:06Speaker 1: a shot. Willard Jackson. I love it, man, I love it.
- 40:13Speaker 1: You know I love I love communicating with you and
- 40:16Speaker 1: I and the show is based on being able to
- 40:18Speaker 1: hear the insides, the values what pushes individuals like you.
- 40:23Speaker 1: Because of the fact there's not enough shows out there
- 40:25Speaker 1: like this, and I think I'm a rather unique form
- 40:27Speaker 1: and when I got you, when you when I I
- 40:29Speaker 1: you know, I did chext on what will? I said?
- 40:31Speaker 1: Would you do my show? Shawn? Stop? Stop? Yeah, man,
- 40:35Speaker 1: come on, come on, come on stop? What you want
- 40:37Speaker 1: me to do? The show? And did all the stuff himself,
- 40:40Speaker 1: you know he didn't send it to his assistant. He
- 40:42Speaker 1: did it all himself. So let's talk about that crowning
- 40:45Speaker 1: jewel that's sitting out there called Ebony and Jet Magazine.
- 40:49Speaker 1: And before we talk about that, I want to let
- 40:51Speaker 1: you know I voted in the HPCU College Queens, which
- 40:56Speaker 1: is which is the which is another iconic brand. Let's
- 41:00Speaker 1: talk about the HBCU College Queens which if any African American,
- 41:06Speaker 1: any person who's any last forty years, you open that
- 41:10Speaker 1: magazine enough to see who want and how has the
- 41:15Speaker 1: social media or the email system of the digital world
- 41:17Speaker 1: changed it and what is the future of that of
- 41:20Speaker 1: that platform with under your vision? Well as you know,
- 41:26Speaker 1: I mean, Ebony has always had some basic iconic opponents
- 41:36Speaker 1: to the magazine that everybody knows about. I mean, you
- 41:41Speaker 1: talk about Jet magazine. Everybody talked about the beauty of
- 41:44Speaker 1: the way, you know, you talked about Ebony every year
- 41:50Speaker 1: Ebony has always highlighted the queens on these historically black colleges. Okay,
- 41:58Speaker 1: that is part of the you know, the fabric of evity,
- 42:02Speaker 1: and so what we're doing now is just taking that
- 42:06Speaker 1: and expanded it in a in a much bigger way.
- 42:10Speaker 1: We're doing that now through social media, through digital We
- 42:15Speaker 1: now have corporate partners who are co sponsoring those young ladies.
- 42:22Speaker 1: And so what is going on now is that once
- 42:25Speaker 1: it's narrowed down through the voting, national voting, where we're
- 42:30Speaker 1: getting close to three million people voting, the top ten
- 42:35Speaker 1: young ladies are then taken to Disney and so in
- 42:41Speaker 1: Orlando or Los Angeles. Yeah, in Orlando, and man, they
- 42:46Speaker 1: are they It's laid out for them. They get to
- 42:49Speaker 1: spend three days doing photo shoots and video shoots and
- 42:53Speaker 1: they get to explore the Disneyland. We then bringing young
- 42:58Speaker 1: ladies whose queens get the mentor and their mothers are there,
- 43:03Speaker 1: and so it's it's become a really expanded, robust program
- 43:10Speaker 1: that's more than just having these young ladies pictures in
- 43:13Speaker 1: the in the magazine. Okay, let me get this, let
- 43:15Speaker 1: me get this, because I didn't know all this, you know,
- 43:17Speaker 1: I just voted you know what I'm saying. I just voted.
- 43:19Speaker 1: You know, you can vote as many times you want.
- 43:21Speaker 1: It's a beautiful set up, you know. And so you're
- 43:24Speaker 1: telling me now you have corporate sponsors tied to it,
- 43:27Speaker 1: and and also it is narrowed down the ten ladies
- 43:30Speaker 1: with the most votes, and then they're brought to Orlando, Florida.
- 43:34Speaker 1: And the Orlando Florida is kind of like a camp
- 43:36Speaker 1: where they're mentored future young executives of America, you kind
- 43:41Speaker 1: of like creating here and creating business relationships and just
- 43:44Speaker 1: social relationships. And they and their moms are there. So
- 43:48Speaker 1: it's really really a unique situation. It is a unique situation.
- 43:54Speaker 1: It's a great um exposure for these young ladies. Man,
- 43:59Speaker 1: they love it um and um, and it's a lot
- 44:03Speaker 1: of fun. Well that's key. That's key. That's key. That's key.
- 44:07Speaker 1: I love it because of the fact that you know,
- 44:09Speaker 1: in its own sudden way, essence is always a champion
- 44:13Speaker 1: UH African American female beauty of all colors, you know
- 44:17Speaker 1: what I'm saying. And sometimes we we we missed. We
- 44:20Speaker 1: gotta give you credit there, We gotta give any credit
- 44:22Speaker 1: for that, you know what I'm saying, Because You've been
- 44:24Speaker 1: the true champion, you know, and I'm talking about at
- 44:27Speaker 1: HBCU schools where sometimes they get you know, once once
- 44:31Speaker 1: so called discrimination and then in segregation, and then you know,
- 44:34Speaker 1: we start going to all these different colleges. You know,
- 44:36Speaker 1: HBCUs kind of got left on the back burner, but
- 44:39Speaker 1: you guys never left. You've always supported that brand. I
- 44:43Speaker 1: always supported that level of understanding. And now you're telling
- 44:46Speaker 1: me you've taken it to another level. We've taken it
- 44:49Speaker 1: to another level as well. As you know, our Ebony's
- 44:53Speaker 1: dedication to HBCUs really really deep and it's fact um
- 45:01Speaker 1: and it's been that way as long as you know,
- 45:04Speaker 1: even beyond before they started highlighting the HBCU queen and
- 45:09Speaker 1: so Ebony. You know, we have a senior level person
- 45:13Speaker 1: on Ebony staff that does nothing but interact with every
- 45:19Speaker 1: HBCU in the country congratulations, and so she creates you know,
- 45:24Speaker 1: we have ambassadorships and we have all kinds of different
- 45:28Speaker 1: activations that we do in reference to supporting our HBCUs.
- 45:33Speaker 1: So that's the staple of evity that will always continue
- 45:36Speaker 1: and growth. Okay, now let's slide over too, because you
- 45:39Speaker 1: can now you can now Ebony Steer comes in print form, correct, Yes, okay, cool, Okay,
- 45:46Speaker 1: let's slide over to Jet Magazine. What is the future
- 45:48Speaker 1: of Jet magazine? What was happening with that magazine that
- 45:51Speaker 1: that digital publication. Yeah, so what we're doing with Jet
- 45:55Speaker 1: is we've we've we've repurposed Jet where it's gonna be
- 46:00Speaker 1: a problem primarily a digital platform, but we will still
- 46:07Speaker 1: do some print and the print that will do will
- 46:11Speaker 1: be in the form of special editions maybe once a
- 46:14Speaker 1: quarter new stand or a new stand only. But the
- 46:19Speaker 1: repurpose in the Jet is to focus on the millennial audience. Yes,
- 46:29Speaker 1: and we're gonna give shine to these young folks, these
- 46:32Speaker 1: young African American influencers who are normally not you know,
- 46:38Speaker 1: there's not really platforms out there to really show them
- 46:42Speaker 1: in a different light, in a very positive light. And
- 46:46Speaker 1: uh and so we'll be doing activations around the country
- 46:49Speaker 1: for these young folks, will be highlighting them on the digital,
- 46:53Speaker 1: will be putting in a lot of these uh influencers
- 46:57Speaker 1: and and really spot lighting them so everybody know who
- 47:00Speaker 1: they are. It's interesting, you know, well, I gotta just
- 47:03Speaker 1: share this with your press release is going to go
- 47:05Speaker 1: out tomorrow. Um where where that eighteen and thirty or
- 47:08Speaker 1: four generations really is the entrepreneurship generation, and I am
- 47:12Speaker 1: I am becoming the Uncle Roushan to that generation. And
- 47:17Speaker 1: my show Money Beating Conversation is going to be syndicated
- 47:21Speaker 1: to HBCU schools. So I'm just letting you know, we're
- 47:26Speaker 1: we're we're we know this is this is this relationship.
- 47:29Speaker 1: So know that press release coming out tomorrow, you read it.
- 47:32Speaker 1: Everybody around the country gonna read this, and so i'mouldna
- 47:35Speaker 1: let you know that you're hitting a couple of areas
- 47:38Speaker 1: that's coming just right in my path. That's right in
- 47:40Speaker 1: my direction because I know that who I am and
- 47:44Speaker 1: what I represent, that millennial direction, millionaire generation need that
- 47:49Speaker 1: direction of entrepreneurship. Who can they focus on because my
- 47:51Speaker 1: resume speaks for itself. I am the truth and because
- 47:55Speaker 1: of that, because of that, and we hear what you're
- 47:57Speaker 1: saying in the direction you're going know that my my
- 48:00Speaker 1: my doors are opened, My friend, my doors are opened.
- 48:03Speaker 1: I'm going right in the heart of HBCU schools. I'm
- 48:05Speaker 1: gonna be that voice. They're coming to me. They want
- 48:08Speaker 1: to hear the truth, they want to understand that there
- 48:11Speaker 1: they need directions and guess what I'm comfortable with delivering
- 48:14Speaker 1: that message and what you're saying about your whole focusing
- 48:17Speaker 1: that Ebony has always had at the core has been
- 48:20Speaker 1: HBCU schools. Hey, man, let's let's let's start shaking the
- 48:23Speaker 1: hands and start doing some big things together. Brother, absolutely,
- 48:26Speaker 1: and you know we over here to Ebony love you, shot.
- 48:30Speaker 1: I mean, you know you're part of our family over
- 48:33Speaker 1: here and always till Michael h okay, exactly now just
- 48:39Speaker 1: now just let Michael my board, Austin and Keith in us. Yeah,
- 48:45Speaker 1: because people that don't know, man, I have my business
- 48:49Speaker 1: partners are Michael Gibson and Linda Johnson, Rice Sir. And
- 48:54Speaker 1: then our fourth person on our board is Chief Smith.
- 48:58Speaker 1: And man, what a group. We worked great together. You know,
- 49:03Speaker 1: we have a lot of visions for this brand. Linda
- 49:05Speaker 1: Johnson right is still our CEO, you know. So yeah,
- 49:11Speaker 1: it's fantastic, man, It's a lot of fun. You know,
- 49:13Speaker 1: it's really cool with hearing. Uh. You know, like I
- 49:15Speaker 1: said when I when I brought you on the show,
- 49:17Speaker 1: I didn't want to just talk about that significant brand,
- 49:20Speaker 1: that very significant brand in your life. I just want
- 49:22Speaker 1: the people here a little bit of your story, and
- 49:24Speaker 1: believe me, y'all, it's a lot more to tell because
- 49:26Speaker 1: I haven't even got into the CVG Investment Group, which
- 49:29Speaker 1: you kind of like talked about, which which gets all
- 49:32Speaker 1: these the Starlight Transportation Company in Washington, all these things,
- 49:38Speaker 1: and how big these staffing is around the country because
- 49:42Speaker 1: of the fact that you're changing lives, man, and congratulations
- 49:45Speaker 1: and don't you stop, will it? And I know I'm
- 49:46Speaker 1: just telling you that for hype reason because I know
- 49:49Speaker 1: you're not gonna stop. But don't you stop, my friend, man,
- 49:53Speaker 1: Bruce Sean, I take that to heart. Man. It means
- 49:55Speaker 1: a lot for you to say that, and I can
- 49:57Speaker 1: I guarantee you we're not stopping over here. Bro. Well
- 50:02Speaker 1: you stay strong, man. Tell Linda I say Hi. Tell
- 50:05Speaker 1: Michael Gibson, I say hi. Till my boy Keith I
- 50:08Speaker 1: said hi. Because guys, you guys are winners. And stay blessed.
- 50:11Speaker 1: If you ever need me, man, I'm there for you.
- 50:13Speaker 1: On SOCIOO definitely on this radio show. We'll be right
- 50:16Speaker 1: back with more from Rashan McDonald and Money Making Conversations.
- 50:20Speaker 1: Don't touch that doctor. Welcome to Money Making Conversations. It's
- 50:27Speaker 1: the show that she has the secrets of success experience
- 50:29Speaker 1: firsthand by marketing and Brandon expert Rashan McDonald. I will
- 50:33Speaker 1: know he's giving me advice on many occasions. In the
- 50:35Speaker 1: case you didn't notice, I'm not broke, you know he'll
- 50:38Speaker 1: be interviewing celebrity CEOs, entrepreneurs and industry decision makers. It's
- 50:42Speaker 1: what he likes to do, it's what he likes to share.
- 50:45Speaker 1: Now it's time to hear from my man, Rashan McDonald
- 50:48Speaker 1: money making conversations. Here we come. Rashan McDonald's here and
- 50:52Speaker 1: my next guance is on the phone. He's been there
- 50:54Speaker 1: for a while, so let me introduce him because he
- 50:56Speaker 1: loves to talk, just like I love the interview. My
- 50:59Speaker 1: next guest is Compton, California raised, Ivy League educated, former
- 51:04Speaker 1: NFL All Pro and you can see him on TV
- 51:07Speaker 1: every day on ESPN. Please work on the money making conversation.
- 51:11Speaker 1: One of my favorites, mar Sellers Wiley Wiley, Man, I've
- 51:19Speaker 1: been following your career, not only as a because you
- 51:21Speaker 1: know your story. I'm a sports guy. I'm not I'm
- 51:23Speaker 1: not one of these guys who are who who's I'm
- 51:26Speaker 1: passioned by teams say I stopped doing that team at
- 51:30Speaker 1: teams so long time ago because I got tired of
- 51:32Speaker 1: being mad on Sundays. You know, when your team you know,
- 51:35Speaker 1: you know, you know, Okay, where I'm from from Houston, Texas.
- 51:38Speaker 1: So it's a lot of sadness when it comes to
- 51:40Speaker 1: football in Houston, Okay. You know that infin this come
- 51:44Speaker 1: back by Buffalo Bills when Warren Moon was quarterback in
- 51:47Speaker 1: that big lead and brother, I used to look at
- 51:50Speaker 1: my TV set, man, and I have a hole in
- 51:52Speaker 1: my chest emotionally, and I thought myself, I said, I
- 51:55Speaker 1: don't play football. I don't own no teams. I don't
- 51:58Speaker 1: even buy a ticket to the game. You need to
- 52:00Speaker 1: stop all this madness. Stop all this kid. Imagine how
- 52:02Speaker 1: we fail when we were on the field and we
- 52:04Speaker 1: had to feel those over here you go. But when
- 52:10Speaker 1: I when I look at your career, man, because it's
- 52:12Speaker 1: always stood out, was that you know, was when you
- 52:15Speaker 1: when you went when you made the decision to go
- 52:16Speaker 1: to Columbia, Okay, you went from you went from the
- 52:18Speaker 1: West coast to the East coast, Okay. And then but
- 52:22Speaker 1: they made a big deal about it, and I want
- 52:25Speaker 1: to know it is a big deal. But but but
- 52:28Speaker 1: because you know, it's like, you know, like Compton is
- 52:30Speaker 1: such a bad place that people are not supposed to
- 52:32Speaker 1: come out of because I'm f Fifth War of Texas,
- 52:33Speaker 1: which is similar to Compton. And now does that Does
- 52:37Speaker 1: that annoy you a little bit when people seem like this,
- 52:41Speaker 1: like you, you would like somebody extra special that you
- 52:43Speaker 1: are unusual to pop out of Compton and be able
- 52:46Speaker 1: to go to Columbia. Well, it does in the sense
- 52:50Speaker 1: that they don't understand and respect the greatness within Compton,
- 52:55Speaker 1: Fifth War, Texas, or any circumstance that faces adversity. So
- 52:59Speaker 1: it's just irving when people want to make a blanket
- 53:02Speaker 1: statement like you really are one in a million when
- 53:05Speaker 1: you're not. Um There are a lot of kids there
- 53:07Speaker 1: that were successful in their own rights, maybe not in
- 53:10Speaker 1: NFL ways or media ways, but I know VPS, I
- 53:15Speaker 1: know CEO from confidence, I know kids that took the
- 53:18Speaker 1: right course when it came to their education and their careers. However,
- 53:23Speaker 1: there are a lot of kids that are forking a
- 53:24Speaker 1: roll kids And I called myself a fork kids and
- 53:28Speaker 1: I came. I came to the intersection, and it was
- 53:31Speaker 1: a responsibility more so than I was ordained or I
- 53:35Speaker 1: was God said. It was just a responsibility to my
- 53:38Speaker 1: family and deeper to my community that I had to
- 53:42Speaker 1: be an example. So yeah, at times my inner desires
- 53:46Speaker 1: were to just go to the football factory school, be
- 53:49Speaker 1: a typical football player and live out that story that
- 53:52Speaker 1: we've heard a thousand times. But I thought it would
- 53:55Speaker 1: be unique to do what I did, which is prioritized academic,
- 54:00Speaker 1: still play ball, and still have an opportunity to world. Brother,
- 54:05Speaker 1: it was an awesome because I feel that when you're
- 54:07Speaker 1: absolutely right, you know, coming from a fifth ward and
- 54:10Speaker 1: which is very similar to Compton, California, you know, you
- 54:14Speaker 1: do have those forking roads. It's their friends of mine
- 54:17Speaker 1: who took the wrong fork and uh and guess what
- 54:20Speaker 1: they steal in the hood. And I saw something the
- 54:22Speaker 1: other day, Man, I was like, wow, Okay, we're the
- 54:25Speaker 1: same age. You got to be kidding me, you know,
- 54:27Speaker 1: because because that lifestyle will beat you up, it will
- 54:30Speaker 1: take its toll on you because there are no options,
- 54:33Speaker 1: There are no uplifting sides of it. And when I
- 54:35Speaker 1: look at your story and I read about your story,
- 54:38Speaker 1: you are a story because similar to yours, I came
- 54:41Speaker 1: out of. My degree is in mathematics. I went to
- 54:43Speaker 1: work five BM. Those those will always there on my resume,
- 54:47Speaker 1: just like Columbia will always stay in your resume. And
- 54:50Speaker 1: when you walk in the room, that's your that's your
- 54:52Speaker 1: badge right there, brother, and that's your badgery. Even tell
- 54:55Speaker 1: anybody African America, anybody who wants to hear your story
- 54:59Speaker 1: that you can do. Don't let nobody stop you. Don't
- 55:02Speaker 1: let nobody stop you preach man. And you know what,
- 55:06Speaker 1: growing up, I saw the gangs, I saw the drugs,
- 55:09Speaker 1: the poverty. But the most disturbing thing wasn't those things.
- 55:13Speaker 1: It was the low ambition. It was the people that
- 55:17Speaker 1: were They were setting their goals too low. They had jobs,
- 55:20Speaker 1: not careers. And when I got into the mindset that
- 55:24Speaker 1: I wanted to design my life, that came with a responsibility,
- 55:28Speaker 1: and that came with a discipline that I had to
- 55:31Speaker 1: listen to or else I knew I wouldn't be on track.
- 55:34Speaker 1: So you get to the NFL, you get to the FPN,
- 55:38Speaker 1: and everyone thinks, oh, wow, man, you're just a special individual.
- 55:42Speaker 1: Hey look, I'm gonna be humble about it and say,
- 55:45Speaker 1: underd I worked for it. But let's be real. I
- 55:48Speaker 1: recognized that greatness in so many people, but you have
- 55:52Speaker 1: to stay disciplined. You have to know yourself and identity,
- 55:57Speaker 1: and you have to take time to design your plan.
- 56:01Speaker 1: When you talk about peer pressure, when you talk about
- 56:03Speaker 1: your circumstances dictate who you are. That's the person who
- 56:08Speaker 1: is not taking the proper time to design their life.
- 56:11Speaker 1: So they're getting caught up in the meth when I
- 56:13Speaker 1: when I say that, having because you know we're gonna
- 56:16Speaker 1: be friends, I'm gonna just tell you right now, tell
- 56:18Speaker 1: us because we are always been the first time we talked,
- 56:21Speaker 1: because your life is so selling. I'm older than you,
- 56:23Speaker 1: but your life is so similar to my eyes. And
- 56:25Speaker 1: I definitely always your people, you know, people that are
- 56:29Speaker 1: younger like you. You gotta walk where I walk, okay,
- 56:31Speaker 1: And you might want to listen to me because some
- 56:33Speaker 1: of these places I stepped, you really don't want to step.
- 56:37Speaker 1: And I denied myself, you know, I didn't. I don't
- 56:39Speaker 1: And I just say this to anybody. I don't nothing
- 56:42Speaker 1: because it's wrong. I don't drink. I want smoke. And
- 56:44Speaker 1: because because I had to, I felt I had to
- 56:47Speaker 1: set an example for my friends, you know, because they
- 56:49Speaker 1: were super parties, you know, and they did some other things.
- 56:52Speaker 1: We're not gonna stay on the radio, I would go
- 56:54Speaker 1: giving me, are you kidding me? Okay? And now they're
- 56:58Speaker 1: you know, they're on state farms, they're on the they're
- 57:00Speaker 1: they're all stay there executives. And I always believe because
- 57:04Speaker 1: I held the course of who I was and and
- 57:07Speaker 1: didn't party crazy party like everybody else. You know that
- 57:12Speaker 1: they got up when I was supposed to get up
- 57:13Speaker 1: and show them examples of it. And dad was you know,
- 57:17Speaker 1: I had friends who was doing crack right in front
- 57:19Speaker 1: of me before crack was cracked. You know what I'm saying.
- 57:21Speaker 1: You know, it was was free based right in front
- 57:24Speaker 1: of me, you know, and I'm not bragging about that.
- 57:25Speaker 1: But but I couldn't tell them. I couldn't tell them
- 57:28Speaker 1: to stop. You know who was I? I was the
- 57:30Speaker 1: same age they were, you know. But I knew that
- 57:33Speaker 1: if I dove into that same pool of water, then
- 57:37Speaker 1: we're always gonna lose. And I felt that because I
- 57:40Speaker 1: held true to who I am. And the reason I
- 57:42Speaker 1: bring that up about you because you know you were
- 57:44Speaker 1: from Compton. Then you're in Colombia. A new set of
- 57:47Speaker 1: rules out there, a new set of rules, a new
- 57:49Speaker 1: set of disciplines, a new set of Hey, this is
- 57:52Speaker 1: how we want to get it done. What you could
- 57:54Speaker 1: do it another different way? What kept you focus? Man?
- 57:57Speaker 1: What kept you? I know you said, Rachean, you know
- 57:59Speaker 1: I didn't want let anybody down. What standards did you
- 58:02Speaker 1: put in place for yourself to keep winning? Oh? Yeah,
- 58:05Speaker 1: I mean I knew going to Columbia will be life changing,
- 58:08Speaker 1: life altering, just because they would change the perception people
- 58:12Speaker 1: had to me, just like I grew up with this
- 58:14Speaker 1: perception that since I was confident, I had to be
- 58:18Speaker 1: this gangster or I had to be an entertainer or
- 58:21Speaker 1: athlete the only way to get out because with those
- 58:24Speaker 1: limited vehicles, I knew that that wasn't the reality. But
- 58:28Speaker 1: that was New York and every single person come up with, Hey, dude,
- 58:35Speaker 1: who dr Drady and shop Dog and those your homies'll
- 58:38Speaker 1: hang out? And I'm like, okay, I get this. So
- 58:41Speaker 1: I knew was a good game. Day was a good day.
- 58:44Speaker 1: It was a good day from so when I knew
- 58:47Speaker 1: I could combine my athletic talents with the stamp of
- 58:50Speaker 1: being an IVY League educated player, that would change the game.
- 58:55Speaker 1: Because I could walk into a room right now and
- 58:58Speaker 1: immediately demand respect, and you would give me the respect
- 59:02Speaker 1: of my intelligence. And it's just the same thing. If
- 59:05Speaker 1: you see a guy down the street and you're like, man,
- 59:08Speaker 1: that dude's in the rolls way, the first thing you
- 59:10Speaker 1: think is something's going right in his life, right right,
- 59:13Speaker 1: right right. If I walk, if I work around and say, hey,
- 59:16Speaker 1: where'd you graduate from Columbia, They're gonna immediately say something
- 59:20Speaker 1: is smart about this brother right here. And that's where
- 59:23Speaker 1: I wanted to go. I don't want to have to
- 59:25Speaker 1: go through hurdles and hoops to prove to you my intelligence.
- 59:29Speaker 1: I wanted something to deliver it to you instantaneously. At
- 59:32Speaker 1: Columbia did that for me. And that's the beauty of
- 59:34Speaker 1: you because you know, and it's and it's really interesting.
- 59:37Speaker 1: Because I've watched your TV. I could tell this is
- 59:40Speaker 1: highly educated guy. You know, who's who knows the roles
- 59:43Speaker 1: of corporate lifestyle, you know, Ivy League trade. But then
- 59:47Speaker 1: it's the street guy. It's the street guy. You know,
- 59:50Speaker 1: could walk and know what street not to walk on,
- 59:53Speaker 1: know what time of night it is. Because a lot
- 59:55Speaker 1: of people don't know. That's why the get robbed. They
- 59:56Speaker 1: don't know what time of night. It is, and that's
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: a mentality that they helps you, and and and and
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: and when I'm listening to you convey what you're doing sports,
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: it's very natural to me when I hear you talk,
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: I appreciate it's a bouncing not man. As you said,
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: I am street smart. I grew up in it. Uh
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: that's just my surroundings, and I extracted from that exactly
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: what I needed. The toughness, uh, the work ethic, that discipline,
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: because you can't show me rougher circumstances that I've already lived. You.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: So when I get into the real world, I laugh
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: when they say, oh, can you do some extra filming,
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: some extra time, can you do another interview? I'm like, dude,
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: do you understand what I've been through before? So I'm
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: not phased by this, But there is a game within
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: the game, and more people need to understand that. When
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: you talk about how to work in corporate America and
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: to get around the political warfare, there's a game within
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: the game, and those are the critical lessons that more
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: of youngsters need to learn, because that's the difference between
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: being a good professional and being being at the top
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: of your profession. We're gonna be right back with more
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: with Mars Salis. Hey man, you got a book coming out.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: I want to talk about that. I want to talk
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: about your entrepreneurship, and also want to talk more about
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: ESPN because I'm seeing you on a lot of different shows. Now, brother,

- 1:02:36Speaker 1: long as it's inside of that get bigger when you
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: put it in a punt. Ladies and gentlemen, please blocking
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: the phone. The one and only Charlie Wilson. Many people
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: have really been trying to give me to do a
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: gospel record for so many years, and I've been promising
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: God that I would, I would shout him out to
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: do something, you know, and my baby, come on, man,
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: but look Jesus in the song comes Patty little Bell,
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: and you know what, I'm gonna be doing concerts and
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: little clubs. Thank you, Thank you for you so that
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: I can touch you when I'm staying with my hands.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: Thank you. See, I told you be there. Every Monday,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: ten am. The noon b is a love and naty
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: money making conversations. Uh. This Jean McDonald and you're listening
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: to money, money making conversations my guests. Uh, you see
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: him over day. Sports Nation is on ESPN at twelve
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: thirty Pacific Standard time and three thirty Eastern Standard Time.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Here as a radio show that actually listened to when
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: I come to l A's on seven ten. Uh, it's great.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: It's it's week days from three to seven pm. You
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: know this guy I, when I say Guy I fool
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: is relatable because of the fact that when I when
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: I look at the individual like Myselos, you know what
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: he's preaching on a regular basis when I hear him talk,
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: when I read things about him, is dad, you can
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: be successful if you want to be success, askful. And
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: he doesn't put himself into a special box. He saw
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: an opportunity given to him and you took advantage of it.
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: And and and when I hear him talking, it's always
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: that's the driving force that keeps going. What you're in
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: your voice is that take advantage of the opportunity that's
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: given to you. Is that correct? That is absolutely correct. Man.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: I got a chance to be a professional athlete, which
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: is many a kid's dreams, especially where I'm from, and
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: through my experiences, I think one of the lasting values
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: that I gained from my experience of being a pro
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: athlete is how fickle it is, how fickle the dame
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: is and how short the game is. And it's a
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: microcosm of life. You get that finite shelf life. You're
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: only there for a decade or so if you're blessed,
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: and if you're just average, you're only there for three years.
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: And you realize how vulnerable you are, no matter how
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: talented you are about that in real life. You're in
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: six packs. You got a six pack, You eat right,
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: you don't drink, you don't smoke. You got muscles popping
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: out of everywhere. You run on that field, and you
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: are ready to dominate. Rashan, You are ready to dominate
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: in short time. You're a pro bowl player. You're the man.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: You want championships, m vps and in one play, yeah,
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: one play, it could be different for the rest of
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: your life. And when I learned that from playing ball,
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: and then my upbringing. Brother. It's not a day that
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: goes by that I not only appreciate it, but I
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: also try to determine my faith by my discipline and
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: my work. As people. Just gotta get on the board
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: with that and things will turn out a lot better.
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: For It's a couple of online programs that you're involved,
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: and I want to bring up. One of them is
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: with the Columbia University School of Professional Studies. What exactly
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: is that where you just spoke pertinent not only even
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: spoke person, but by the one of the partners. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: It's called CUB education, and the Columbia program is unique
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: and the only VY League school that's helping the global
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: sports industry world. So so many kids walk up to me,
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: Hey man, I want to play ball, Hey man, I
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: want to play basketball, football. I get it, but do
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: you understand the opportunities that surround that orbit the playing field,
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: not just being a player, but being the executive, being
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: a part of the media, being any part and of
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: the antennas of the game. So we're giving them opportunities
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: to see what they can do to be a part
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: of this ecosystem without necessarily being a player and it's
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: been tremendous because kids just want to be exposed to
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: opportunities because their passion is in sports. But maybe they're
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: not the performer for sports, but they can still be
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: a part of that culture and a part of that environment.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: So it's been tremendous, and it's tremendous when I look
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: at you like doing during the season. You know, everybody
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: knows you for Sports Nation, you know, and off the
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: time when I've seen you your hostess show a lot now,
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: which is fantastic, congratulations. And then I started seeing you
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: pop up on at halftime on Monday Night football. Okay,
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: more more FaceTime for my man, more FaceTime for my
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: fand you know, because the goal is man to be
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: the best in your field. And then also to dump
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: that I'm just a football player. I can talk about anything.
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: Mentality is that? Is that a brand? That is that
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: the goal? To be an entertainer, to be a personality?
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: What is the goal? When I look at Marsala's wild,
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: He's brand, what's your goal? Yeah, it's great that you're
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: taking notice of that because I'm supposed to do bad.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: You're rising, stop, you're rising, sto. I love it, man,
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: I appreciate it because it's funny. I got the ESPN
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: and two thousand and seven right after I retired, and
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: at first, once again, here I go. I'm back in confidence.
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: I'm even at FTN. That got me in the box, right,
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: I do NFL only NFL, like NFL live NFL. I'm like, okay,
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: y'all know that at one, football is not even my
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: favorite sport. Still just the sport I can play, not
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: my favorite sport, and to let me, I'm a person
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: like I have more interest in just football. Absolutely. Two
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: weeks into that gig my, my boss came to me
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: and said, man, you ain't gonna be on this show long.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: And that's a good thing because your personality and your outlook,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: we're not gonna limit that. And that's how that transition
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: into like forest Nation now more hosting and then more
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: opportunities to being prevented weeklies seems like so and it's
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: good and I'm teaching, man, and they're missing a boat
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: with you, marsellis because in front of a live audience,
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: you're a beast man. You're a beast brother. People gravitate
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: because you're you're a natural entertainer. You know, you're a
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: natural entertainer and that's a blessing. Man, that's a blessing
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: skill to have. And when I see you diversifying yourself,
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: I know what you're trying to do. And I'm going like,
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: you know when that's that's the purpose of money making conversations, Man,
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: purpose of this show is to take a guy like
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: you and let everybody see other sides of the business side,
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: the entertainment's side, and realized that the lifestyle that you live.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: Realized that you're fighting to be successful every day and
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: a lot of people just assume success just comes your way,
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: and that's not true. And that's that that's not fair
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: to what you do every day. Like you said, man,
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: you did you pumped up? You want the four three forty,
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: you sp sprint out on that field. You could trip
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: over a grass blade and bam, you know, to a
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: c L. Because it happened to my daughter. You know,
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: she was a tennis pro you know out there, want
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: to be the next arena. You know, week before Christ,
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: week before thanks hiving, tore a c L. Changed her
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: whole life, changed the whole way she thought about his process.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: But she did lose her brain. And that's what you're
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: trying to get out to the kids who are walking
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: to even young adults who are walking up to your day.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: You have more options using your brains than using your muscles,
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: said brother. I mean in a prioritize academics like I did,
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: um and it looks it sounds great now looking back
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: on it. Right in the moment, let's talk about in
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: the moment, brother, when you got all these major schools
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: coming after you everything. One of my friends is coming
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: to me and saying, you're going to Columbia talk, You're
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: not gonna make it to the NFL, not the world
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: football team in the world. They don't get any coverage,
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: any exposure. And my peer pressure was a negative peer pressure.
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: No one wanted me to prioritize my books in my brain,
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: but I went against the grain and thankfully I did, man,
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: and it worked out for the best. But yeah, in
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: the moment, oh that was uphill Klin. Now, tell me
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: about this book that you're gonna have coming out this
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: far because guess what you're not going in where Mr
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: Wild and saying Mr Wild, because I'll be promoting that
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: book when it comes out. Tell us about that book, man,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: We want to hear about it. What would it entail. Yeah,
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: the book, we're still kicking around titles, but it's gonna
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: entail the journey. And the journey is about the essence
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: of who you are and how you can never let
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: that spirit die, you can never shut that up, you
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: can never be put into that box. And I'm just
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: gonna tell people through the experiences of how not to
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: get boxed in and and the biggest enemy. Like everyone
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: always talks about this world in terms of circumstances, that
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: the crowd you hang around with and all this adversity
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: surrounding you. But I heard this and change my life
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: when I was young by Mark Twain that life is
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: a competition between you and yourself. And when I heard that,
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: I said, you know what, it's on me, and if
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: it's not gonna happen, it's because of me. And when
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: you take that type of responsibility, things start to open
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: up to you because you understand every single moment for
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: it's important. So my book is about taking you through
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: that experience and inspiring people to get the greatest out
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: of themselves. And my journey from Compton to Columbia to
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: NFL to EFTN is a unique journey. But I want
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: to show you how your experiences can make you be
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: especial as you want to be. Mr Wiley. You know
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: I've I've taken three books with Steve Harvey to number
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: one best sellers. I've sold, marketing and branded with six
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: million books sold worldwide, translating in thirty different languages. So
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: when I tell you I'm a fan, and when I
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: tell you trying to figure out this title, when I
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: tell you rather to go put this book on the shelf,
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: you come back to me, my brother, because I'm a friend. Okay,
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: I am here. It's more than likely it's gonna be
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: a football season. We're gonna talking to football. We're gonna
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: talk to this book. I look forward. There is a
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: deal man, And I just gotta say this. The super
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: Bowl was yesterday. That wasn't important to me. What was
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: important to me with to get your story told on
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: my show, to everybody on my Heart Radio podcast, to
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: everybody to sit there in Atlanta, and everybody on my
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: Money Making Conversation Facebook page. Because you're a very amazing guy. Man,
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: keep winning, and look, you can kiss his brother every
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: day three thirties the standard time on Sports Nation. And
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: guess what he may pop up elsewhere. You keep winning, Brother,
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: you keep winning. Man, Keep ready, Money Main Conversations, Got

- 1:14:31Speaker 1: Los Angeles. I'm going way back at time grabbing this guy.
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: I remember several times just sitting down just talking about
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: food with him in Las Vegas and Los Angeles. He
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: owns Darrow's New Orleans Grill. That's rest, that's Cajun food.
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: The restaurant brings classic Cajing cuisine as the to the
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: cars in California. Community with Jambalayah Po boys and mo
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: Please walk on to Money Making Conversations. Norwood Pluck Junior,
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: Mrs McDonald Top of them Angeles, my friends, I know
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: the top of the morning that I'm on the East coast. Man,
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: I missed your brother. I missed you man eighteen years man,
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: and you still sound handsome. What about that I'll tell you.
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: So here's the deal, you know, because uh, because you know,
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: you guys started me, you know, Steve Harving myself out
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: there when we launched that radio show, and yuh you
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: got so much believe And when we went to the
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: community that you guys are like, are they in the community,
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: because we were. You were all people, you know, we
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: we were the brand that we wanted to communicate with.
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: And then all of a sudden the Neighborhood Awards just
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: jumped off and that was just like a blessing because
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: it allowed us to support the people who supported us.
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: And then and the see at the restaurants still out there,
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: you know, you know, a bang of business. I may
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: be in l A the tenth and I definitely would
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: be back on the fourteenth in l A. So you
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: will be seeing me, my friend coming there. Get me
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: one of them pull boards, a little jumbala, a little gumble.
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: Why are you you do your gumbo gumbo? There's two
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: types of New Orleans style okra and you never mix
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: it too. And so as you well aware, we don't
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: cook with any pork products. And the backstory on me,
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: my family used to cook for the world. Now Commander's
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: Palace in the Garden District of New Orleans over seven.
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: Don't don't don't you act like that's that's that's everyday
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: stuff the world right now. They got an in Vega.
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: They gotta command this palace and Dave Vegas, I've eat
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: that it's little and said my family the twenty seven years,
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: they're not worked for the Hillston family. And believe it
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: or not, Rashaan And this is back in the day
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: when colored people can work in these five star restaurants
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: and hotels. But you couldn't either stay there. Man. We
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: gave New Walance a flavor, but we don't have a
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: whole lot to show for it. Man. And guess what
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: but your restaurant. You know, let's give it out their
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: website right quick, because I want people to go online
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: and see this restaurant, this great menu, this food, all
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: this stuff. You know a lot of people take pictures,
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: you know, like you can. You can go to those restaurant.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: He's had a little plate over that day. They move
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: that lettuce just right, makes you they catch up slide
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: off of that frieda not there. What they're showing you
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: is high. It's gonna be on your plate looking good
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: and you have a lot to offer on your portions
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: because you know us, man, we like the doggy bag
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: and we won't got to do. You know, we developed
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: this concept called Darrelson Wallace Grill. It's a hybrid, it's
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: a full bar, and we're the first of its kind
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: in the country, not even in New Orleans that they
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: have this particular concept where you're able to walk into
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: a fast casual Cajun Creole either with a full bar
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: and no pork on the menu, and all the seafood
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: is far and raising grain fed. And not only that too,
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: you don't have to get everything fried. You can also
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: get a grill. You know, we try to give you
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: a healthier version of the Cajun Creole cuisine because the
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: food down home tastes good. We'll kill you, man. Okay,
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: let me ask you this is this is a really
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: really important question because of the fact that you know,
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: as you get older, like you said, the food, you
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: gotta watch your diet and everything. I don't think you
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: stay relevant because a lot of businesses are going out
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: of businesses because you know, like tweaking, you know, they
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: went out of business because people would worry about to
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: get in fat, you know, worried about the food. You know,
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: co can change his name again because people are buying
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: more bottle water. Because that means the market is always changing,
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: always putting salads on their menu, always trying to figure
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: out how to keep their audience, how to keep current
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: irrelevant and that diet ever changing diet market. How do
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: you stay relevant in this in this in this ever
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: changing market. Well, we keep our ears to the ground,
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: and we keep our pulse on the millennials and what's
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: going on in our community and what's going around us.
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: Because what happens to man, I tell people all the time,
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: it's the fact that if you have a great product,
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: it has to be more than just a great product.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: You have to find a very sophisticated way in marketing
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: and getting the message out there. There's so many various
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: platforms out there in terms of social media, I mean
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: that's the new thing right now, man, where if you're
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: not on the internet, if you're not on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook,
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: and some type of social media platform, it's gonna be
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: very difficult for you to get the message that you're
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: trying to convey out there. And so what we try
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: to do each and every day, Man, listen to the guests.
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: We don't have customers. We have guests. When people walk
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: into our establishment, man, we have to give them an
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: experience where before they leave our eatery start thinking about
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: the next trip before they leave. And that's the biggest
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: success to right there. Man. We've been featured all over
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: the world, man. Uh. The sixteen years we were in
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: Marina del Rey, we had pot them all over the
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: world eating there. We've been featured on Guys Here, We've
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: been on the Best of the Food Network, We've been
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: on the Travel Channel. Now we're on your ward winning showing.
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: So we've been very fortunate and very honored that these
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: type of relationships would allow us the platform to get
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: the message out there. You know, just to digress for
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: for a second, Rishan, I've been knowing you for eighteen years. Man.
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: I met you at Sony Gower Studios when you're doing
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: the Parkers and we had a little small hole in
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: the wall of Venice. Boulevoid used to come over there.
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: And when you and Steve Harvey partnered on the first
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: before we went syndicated, you had us on the show.
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: When we're baking for Starbucks, we want, we will want
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: of Starbucks first vnor of color. And you recognize that,
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: and you wanted to get the message out there into
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: the community. Said, look, man, Darrel's new Wallace girl. Uncle
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: Darrel's baking for Starbucks. Man, that's amazing. Can if all
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: the North rooms in California, Brook, Illinois, Minneapolis, NEMA, Marcus
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: and Beverly Hills, you know. And so those are the
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: type of things, man, that we are attribute our success to.
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: It's not about one or two people. It's been about
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: the collective, your willingness and your unselfishness and say, hey, man,
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: I'm going to give these folks a platform to get
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: their message to the general public. I will fever be
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: grateful for that to you. Thank you, you know, because
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: that's that's just been my personnelity. I'll tell people ever eighteen,
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: I guess it's been my nature to want to help
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: to be able to see a vision. First of all,
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: guys are visionaries, you know, And all I, all I
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: was doing was the guy that you know that that
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: vessel and and so so you know what he's saying
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: basically is that I would bring them on the radio
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: station and guess what they would make No advertisement, and
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: I would promote their brand because they felt I figured that, Okay,
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: if they don't win in the community, that means that,
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: you know, there may not be jobs. You know, we
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: gotta pay taxes. And that was the whole basis of
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: a lot of people missed that. They miss it. They
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: miss it. They you know, if the community is not winning,
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: then guess what. And that's who you're playing your music too.
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: They guess, well, you're not gonna win. You're not gonna
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: win because that guess what. Because because that was the
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: really the key, because the whole key behind the neighbor
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: of awards was to get people to say, okay, you
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: you you see a Burger King, And I'm not saying
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: anything negative about Burger King or even today of five guys,
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: these are promoted all the time, you know, Chick fil
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: A all the time, and people are driving right by
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: a restaurant. They're serving equally good food, probably at a
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: cheaper price, and is right in the community. That was
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: the whole basis of the relationships I was creating with
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: people like Nor and his family, because hey, man, I
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: gotta support you guys, because you guys are winning for
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: us long term and eighteen years later. Guess what we're
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: talking on my man? Well, you know, I love you
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: for life. Man, coming on the president of your club.
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: Because that's that's that's important to talk about right now,
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: about relationships because a lot of people missed the boat
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: explained it insignificance of some of the relationships outside of me.
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: But there's been other people have been important, not only
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: just diners or as you'd like to call him. Guess
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: those relationships right, Well, you know what's what's pivotal to
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: to our success. Man was Irvin Magic Johnson when Maggie
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: first started. When Magic first started in business with the theaters,
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: his company called us, reached out to us and say, look,
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: we want you guys to make some products for our
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: theaters and fly back to Manhattan to meet with the
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: company back there, and we were in the Magic Johnson
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: theaters when he did the deal with Starbucks. Starbucks called
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: us from their corporate office. They came here to vet us, obviously,
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: and we went from one Starbucks stores at thirty Starbucks stores.
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: Magic wrote a book called h thirty two Ways to
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: Be a Success in Business New York Times bestseller. We
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: featured prominently in the book. Everything he has done. He's
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: in terms of food wise Chrishan, He's always tried to
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: incorporate Uncle Darrel's in there, man, So I would be
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: grateful for him. Felishers Shot of the Cosby's was out
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: here taking an episode of a Different World. Debbie Allen
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: was directing the show at that time. We're selling the
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: candy to the to the crew members and to the
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: cast of a Different World. Felister shot happened to taste
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: of a con candidate. We're making out flags your product.
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: She called us and invited us to come back to
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: New York to a story New York to introduce the
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: candy to the cast members and crew of The Cosby
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: Show back in the time. Man, isn't that amazing? Man? Well,
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: that that, but you had the product. Though. Here's the
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: thing I want to say to you, know what is
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: that when the call came to you, you was ready.
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: What makes me mad with a lot of our young
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: people out there, or even older people out there, when
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: the call comes to them, they're not even prepared to
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: be ready. So you always wanted to be ready. You
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: always got up every day at the same time going there,
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: even though you didn't see it. Happening. You knew it
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: would happen. And when you got the call, like you said,
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: Starbucks came down and vetted you guess what. You were
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: just kicking around, just happy, little, good lucking guy. And
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: it comes down to let you go. Man, I don't
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: know why magic talking to these folks. They're crazy, you know.
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: And that's really what we're talking about right now is preparation.
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: And when I look at what you're doing and what
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: you're trying to accomplish, even if you futuristic, you said, Rashan,
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: we're trying to get in ahead of these millennials. Because
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: it was it was like it was a pole without
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: saying that five years ago the millennial Mail was seventy
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: were interested in the super Bowl. They took a recently
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: and I talked to my daughter who was at the
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: Universe Houston. I said, did y'all watch the super Bowl? Said?
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: There you go? M that blew Mail. Wait, I ain't
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: watching the super Bowl. Course your millennial you know what
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: I'm saying. So so that means that you're going, hey, man,
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: this is my next generation of customer. I cannot ignore them.
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: So that's why I'm imputing that you're you're tapping into
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: that every day and even hiring people man and being
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: a tent of to the whole thing about it too.
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: You have to be nimble to be able to pivot.
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: And most times, you know, we get weather to a
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: vision into a belief until we're not willing to change
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: to look in another direction. And that's that's a sure
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: cause of death to man were you're not willing to
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: be able to change when necessary. I'm gonna do something.

- 1:26:49Speaker 1: So we have to make sure that this concept has proven.
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: In order for us to know that this concept has legs,
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: we have to go into other markets. See, most time
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: we have a misfire because we we're too ready to
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: make a decision that we're not ready for it. Man, Hey, man,

- 1:29:47Speaker 1: to Money Making Conversations, Charlie Ward. Good morning afternoon, which
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: come on, I'm on East Coast. I mean, because I'm
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: in Atlanta, Georgia, Charlie, I'm in Atlanta, Georgia. You know
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: you're still in Florida, your Florida. Yeah, I'm Southern Florida.
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: There you go, there, you go doing your thing. Hey, Charlotte,
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: First of all, you know, you know, I'm gonna tell
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: you something. Man, you are a hero. Okay, let me
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: get that out the way first. Let's let's understand because
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: when you won that National championship, you wore a black quarterback. Okay,
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: and that mits something, that meant something, That meant something, brother,
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: and that won't change. And uh yes, yes, I guess
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: my story behind that was. You know, of course they
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: went to Florida State. I played for the legendary board.
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: And one of the things that coach Bowden hadn't done.
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: While he was at Florida State, was played a black quarterback.
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: And so when um, when people and I shows and
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: was looking at going through Florida State, people were questioning
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: whether I should go because they never played a black quarterback.
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: One of the things that I coach black Coach Bottom
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: was his uh, his Christian beliefe and he had also
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: one of the things I wanted to do in college
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: was played basketball and football, and so he had allowed
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: Brad Johnson to do that. And you know, in my
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: in my town, people like, well, I don't think you
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: should go because he's never played a black quarterback. And
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: University of Georgia was on my list as well, and
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: they had But one of the things I admired most
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: about Coach Baum was he had history on his side.
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: He allowed Brad to play basketball and so uh. And
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: he also told me that I had to be patients.
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: And when I got to school, Um, I became the
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: putner my freshman year. You down, I read your book down.
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: Let's talk about your parents now. Now your mama, your
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: mama cold Bobby bout. It reminded him that you are
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: uncomfortable because he was slow and making the decision on
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: whether you should be like play basketball, your mama not
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: your daddy. Let's talk about your great daddy. One team
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: they had Bobby Hayes on it, that family, the Ratlers,
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: who should have played the NFL, but he tore his
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: me in the last game of his senior year. Let's
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: talk about let's talk about see I don't want to see.
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: People need to read this book because this is a
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: book about family. This is a book about when the
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: family stands up for their child, when a child allowed
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: a child to go through life and support him. But
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: guess what. Guess what, you know a lot of people
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: talk about lazo ball and all this stuff and all
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: that you know, but man, you if your mom and
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: dad's there for you had both supports us. But your
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: mama do your mom sat down with him and go, look,
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: it's my son gonna play quarterback. Because remember I read
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: the book. Because Bobby Boden didn't think you are a quarterback.
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: He didn't have you on his list to be one
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: of the recruits. He had to be sold in the
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: pitch meeting. And so when you got there, you you
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: know everybody. So when you saw you play, oh yeah yeah,
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: And so so it was your family. They played a
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: major role. Let's talk a little bit about that because
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: I felt it important because that's why I took away
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: from the book because the first two chapters basically dedicated
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: to your family. Correct, that is true. And uh, one
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: of the things that my mom and dad taught us
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: was being supportive of one another. And so they're they're supportive.
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: Actually went in debt following behind Man college. But we
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: supported one another. Of six siblings, Fosters and two brothers,
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: and so we have a large family and they're major
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: um selling portant. And things that they taught us was
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: we got to be supportive of one another and in
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: the same same way today. And so and I'm not
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: you know something, I'm not saying nothing negative by Bobby Bowden.
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: I'm just saying that. I'm just saying the process was
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: that your parents you know whenever you because that's why
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: that's how I end with my daughter. I want my
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: daughter to be able to call me. She's in college
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: right now, she's not playing sports. I want to be
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: able to call me if she's uncomfortable. And that's the
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: type of relationship you had with your parents that if
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: you felt uncomfortable. You could call them and guess what
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: they would initiate the parental responsibilities of getting their child
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: being an adult and intervene yes. And you know, I
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: was grateful to be able to have a mom to
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: be able to call and get inspiration and words of encouragement,
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: which um was not just the first year, but it
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: was throughout absolutely because I had had a sit down,
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: drag out talk with her when I started playing quarterback, because, um,
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: I really didn't want to talk to the media because
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: I've just been like talking to the media. I was
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: wondering why didn't want to talk to me now that
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: I'm the starting quarterback, and she was just saying, Hey,
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: this is what you have to go through. This is
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: part of the process of being the starting quarterback on
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: the national ranked team. And I just had to learn
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: that sometimes you have to go through things, um and
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: do things that you don't want to do in order
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: to achieve your goal. So that's one of the things
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: that she told me a lot, and being able to
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: call her was definitely a great blessing. You know, the
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: book we're talking about is called The Athlete, is about
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: the life story the professional care in collegiate in high
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: school career from Thomas Field, Georgia of Charlie Ward, an
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: incredible high school athlete who was injured in high school
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: and who's injured to the point that the question whether
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: you would have an athletic career because when he when
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: he got in the field actually play, that was a
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: little controversy because mom wasn't in the stands and you
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: really wasn't supposed to be on the field that day
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: in that high school game, but you but that said
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: that that created the legend. Correct, Uh yet so um
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: and dad called the brother of it. He was my
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: coach during that time, and I wasn't clear to play quarterback,
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: and I was clear to punt, but I wasn't far
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: to play quarterback. And my mom got to the game late,
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: and that was ahead of me. I had injured, So
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: I was I was the the out man in a sense,
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: and so my dad had to make a parent decision
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: as a coach. Uh, we're not telling mom? When not
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: telling mom now because Mom was walking into the stadium.
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: But you know as a coach, as a coach, you
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: don't have yourself back then. He uh, you know, he
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: wouldn't have called you know, he wouldn't have called your mom,
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: you know right now, because she said she's shut it
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: all down, brother, shut it all down. But I wanted
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: to ship a little bit because you have another strong
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: lady in your life. It's your wife and and you know,
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: because that means you have very two, very significant females
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: in your life, your mom and your wife. And I
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: took that away from the book too, that she's you know,
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: she always had that supercase, that suitcase pack just in case,
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: because you know, it was trade conscer, trade rooms about
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: you with when you was at New York. You know,
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: even though you were the first round draft pick, you
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: know you're gonna get traded here and get traded there.
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: But she was always and willing to support you at
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: any any cause, even today, even today. And I think
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: that's important. That's what I took away from the book.
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: It was like the value of family and the and
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: the value of God in your life. How significant it is,
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: right And I'm truly grateful because as a professional, you know,
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: it's a high rate of divorce and I'm woman in
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: my life, she sacrificed a lot. And what I mean
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: by a lot, she's a lawyer, she's a career oriented woman.
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: And she's been willing to pick up and leave. Not willing,
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: but sometimes, um, she's been able to do it. And
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: I'm grateful. Um now that I'm going out and doing
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: a lot of speaking engagement, Oh yeah, and different things. Right,
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: she managing your career, not y'all, she manages Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: Let's go and tell the truth. Let's go and tell
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: the Truth's tell the truth. That's why it because she's
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: doing what your mom told you should do long time ago. Talk.
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: Because you have a brilliant story. Man, you have a
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: brilliant story, Charlie telling Charlie. I read your book from
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: front to back, okay, and I read it because each
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: each chapter told me a little bit about the process.
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: You know, they talked about Joey and Bede in Philadelphia.
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: You dealt with the process. You dealt with people doubting you.
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: You dealt with people even in some INSes when you
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: didn't get drafted by the NFL, which was a crazy
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: insult to your ability, but did turn right around be
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: a first round draft pick for the New York Knicks.
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: That's amazing. So so you need to be out there
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: every day, man, and to tell your story. Man, because
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: if you're not read the Athlete, go to Amazon get
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: that book today. This is an amazing book about an
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: amazing man. Because guess what he is a I'm not
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: saying that negative. He's a simple guy, hard work, believing God,
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: and he's honest. What's wrong with that? Jolly well? I
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: appreciate that. And I ain't never talk no guy like
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: this guy here need to be my manager to that, right.
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: I know that's right, brother, you gotta be You gotta
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: be appreciated, man, because like I said, when you won
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: the national championship for the Florida State similar, I was
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: watching the no TV man, and you know, and and
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: when when you know, when they kicked that field goal
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: and they went wide right? Why I left whatever they
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: missed it? I I felt, I felt, I felt proud
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: of you, man, because I knew your journey. It wasn't
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: an easy journey back then. It's not. It's not an
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: easy journey right now. Even though we have you know Watson,
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: and we have you know a Cam Newton, all these
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: guys playing quarterback today, it's still a rough journey for
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: an African American quarterback in your life. Man's testimony to
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: keep faith first, family right there, You're gonna win, that's sir.
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: All those things are very very important to be successful,
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: that's for sure. You do me a fact, you tell
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: your manager wife, get me a social media banner, and
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: I'm gonna post this book on my social media platform
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: this week so we can get the word out. The
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: athlete of story about the incredible, the athlete, the incredible
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: Charlie Ward. This is Julie. Hey, calendar, what's my morning like?
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: Julie is about to have a long day at nine am,
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: soccer carpool at purchase birthday card nine oh five, dry cleaning?
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: Did you just go backwards? I'm sorry, I can't fit
