- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to my show, Money Making Conversation Masterclass. I'm your host,
- 0:03Speaker 1: ra Sean McDonald. I recognized that we all have different
- 0:06Speaker 1: definitions of success. For you and may be the size
- 0:09Speaker 1: of your paycheck. Mine is inspiring people to develop a
- 0:12Speaker 1: plan to reach their dreams. It's time to stop reading
- 0:15Speaker 1: other people's success stories and start writing your own. You
- 0:18Speaker 1: can only exceed expectations by believing in yourself. People always
- 0:21Speaker 1: talk about their purpose or gifts. If you have a gift,
- 0:25Speaker 1: lead with your gift and don't let your friends, family,
- 0:27Speaker 1: or coreworkers stop you from planning or living your dream.
- 0:31Speaker 1: My guest is Warren Campbell. He's a music visionary, executive
- 0:35Speaker 1: and leading producer of R and B, gospel and hip
- 0:37Speaker 1: hop music. Campbell's ability to create chart topping hits across
- 0:41Speaker 1: a multitude of genres has made him critically acclaim as
- 0:45Speaker 1: one of the most prolific record producers of our time.
- 0:48Speaker 1: He's on the show to discuss this company, Block Inc.
- 0:51Speaker 1: And independent record label founded by the Grammy Award winning
- 0:54Speaker 1: producer being featured or TV one unsongd. The hit Maker's
- 0:58Speaker 1: episode one is dropping the Clothes with a line called
- 1:00Speaker 1: Ernest Paul balancing his tenure as the pastor of California
- 1:04Speaker 1: Worship Center in North Hollywood, being a proud father daughter
- 1:08Speaker 1: going to Spellman he has he has three kids total,
- 1:11Speaker 1: and being marrid to every Campbell for over twenty years.
- 1:14Speaker 1: We got a lot to talk about. Please welcome to
- 1:16Speaker 1: Money Haggan conversation about the class, the one and only
- 1:19Speaker 1: Warren Campbell. How are you doing, sir? Did I get
- 1:22Speaker 1: it all in? Did I get that? You brought me out? Man?
- 1:31Speaker 1: That was crazy? I told you, I tell you for
- 1:36Speaker 1: you gotta last day. We got a lot to talk about,
- 1:38Speaker 1: man Man, But it's all good for First of the first,
- 1:41Speaker 1: I'm gonna get you over, get you with your daughter
- 1:43Speaker 1: and Spellman, because I've been showing video at the video
- 1:46Speaker 1: and joe Lee, her daughter, it rolled the spellment. She
- 1:50Speaker 1: down there during the electric slide. Now were you Where
- 1:52Speaker 1: were you at? Where were you at, Warren down the
- 1:55Speaker 1: electric slide? Where were you at? I was watching? I
- 2:02Speaker 1: love it, Man, I love it, brother. Talk about your
- 2:05Speaker 1: daughter man Din in Atlanta and rolling in a prestigious
- 2:09Speaker 1: hbc uth school and what it means to First of all,
- 2:13Speaker 1: I got a daughter, so I know this, that separation,
- 2:16Speaker 1: fear worried constantly, the letting go and trust in life.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Let's talk about that for a minute there, sir. Well,
- 2:24Speaker 1: you know, this is the first person that made me
- 2:27Speaker 1: a father. That's my my, my big girl, my oldest
- 2:31Speaker 1: and we're very close. And so instead of just sending
- 2:34Speaker 1: her down there, I drove, man, I drove from Los
- 2:39Speaker 1: Angeles all the way to Georgia. Awesome, I said. They
- 2:44Speaker 1: started out with just me and her because I said,
- 2:45Speaker 1: you know what, before I let her go, I want
- 2:48Speaker 1: some father daughter time. I want a week to live really,
- 2:51Speaker 1: you know, talk to her for real, the real on
- 2:54Speaker 1: these boys next door over at her at clark in Morehouse.
- 2:59Speaker 1: But some her along the way. My wife jumped and said,
- 3:02Speaker 1: you ain't going bout yourself. I'm coming to And then
- 3:03Speaker 1: my my other two kids wanted to come. So we
- 3:07Speaker 1: took a family road trip. Man. It was beautiful bonding
- 3:10Speaker 1: at last. We were on the road for a week.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Uh and you know, and we had to we had
- 3:14Speaker 1: to let her go. We had to let it go.
- 3:17Speaker 1: And she's seventeen years old. Man, was just it was
- 3:21Speaker 1: emotional because he's not been away from me for more
- 3:25Speaker 1: than two weeks before ever, you know, going to camp things,
- 3:28Speaker 1: and uh so I had to rely on uh the
- 3:33Speaker 1: training that I that I instilled in her. You know, Uh,
- 3:36Speaker 1: if you train up a child in the way that
- 3:38Speaker 1: she or he or she should go when they oh
- 3:41Speaker 1: they want to part, don't mean they want to part
- 3:43Speaker 1: at all. It just means that when they get old
- 3:44Speaker 1: and they start grappling and wrestling with life, they're gonna
- 3:47Speaker 1: revert back to the teaching that they learned. So I'm
- 3:50Speaker 1: just trusting that I'm trusting that we uh were deposited
- 3:55Speaker 1: enough in her, uh that she can use when she's
- 3:59Speaker 1: you know, face with tough life choices and that we're
- 4:02Speaker 1: not there for and you know, and and and the
- 4:05Speaker 1: thing is, I feel good because she called me yesterday.
- 4:07Speaker 1: I was waiting. She hadn't called me. Man, it's been
- 4:10Speaker 1: like it's almost a week, right right, right, right, right right.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Finally she finally called me yesterday. That's my daughter. I said,
- 4:19Speaker 1: come on night. You don't don't forget now, you know,
- 4:21Speaker 1: you know, And just watching them grow up because if
- 4:24Speaker 1: you know, because you have the media out there, you
- 4:25Speaker 1: see the news, you see the violence, you see the
- 4:28Speaker 1: the unexpected. You know, you see the victim of being
- 4:31Speaker 1: a people of color. All these different things come into
- 4:34Speaker 1: play because of the fact that you know, you protected
- 4:37Speaker 1: this young child through elementaries through you know, first we
- 4:41Speaker 1: all let's go back to the birth. It's a miracle
- 4:43Speaker 1: to have a healthy child. Everybody should know that. That's
- 4:45Speaker 1: a blessing. And then to let them go out there
- 4:48Speaker 1: into a world this many miles from you, that's a
- 4:52Speaker 1: courageous move on your part. One. I'm gonna just tell
- 4:54Speaker 1: you right now, brother, that's courageous. Now. It was it was,
- 4:58Speaker 1: you know, it was a god thing. Man. She um,
- 5:01Speaker 1: she wanted to get into a certain school and she
- 5:03Speaker 1: didn't get into that school, and and I felt I
- 5:07Speaker 1: felt like as a as a father, I thought a
- 5:10Speaker 1: failure because I said, you know what, I should have
- 5:12Speaker 1: had her apply to more schools. But because we're all
- 5:15Speaker 1: in my family were all very creative thinkers. We're not
- 5:18Speaker 1: necessarily a family full of you know, um educated you
- 5:22Speaker 1: know uh people. In terms of nobody went to college.
- 5:26Speaker 1: I started doing this what I do now since I
- 5:29Speaker 1: started at thirteen years old, so I wasn't even thinking
- 5:32Speaker 1: about college. By the time I graduated high school, I
- 5:35Speaker 1: was already making a lot of money in the music business.
- 5:38Speaker 1: So um, I thought, my daughter, she's a very creative person,
- 5:41Speaker 1: amazing singer, songwriter, performer, and I just thought, you know what,
- 5:46Speaker 1: she don't have to go to college. She's gonna you know,
- 5:48Speaker 1: she's gonna go her home path. And then a lady
- 5:51Speaker 1: came and uh knocking saying listen. She was an alumni
- 5:55Speaker 1: from UM from Spellman the name of Dr Mary Gaffney.
- 5:59Speaker 1: I would never forget Dr Mary Gaffney. She called us
- 6:02Speaker 1: and said I have been mandated to get Christal Campbell
- 6:05Speaker 1: into Spellman, and a lady we never met before, she said,
- 6:11Speaker 1: I need you to bring Cristal fly down to Spellman
- 6:13Speaker 1: on this day and when she leaves, she would have
- 6:16Speaker 1: an acceptance letter. We went down there, Christo towards the
- 6:20Speaker 1: campus and and I've never seen her excited about school
- 6:23Speaker 1: like that. She said, Dad, I want to go here.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Camp said okay, And so we waited and they sent
- 6:30Speaker 1: her a letter and said she was accepted. And it's
- 6:33Speaker 1: like God open that door. I had nothing to do
- 6:35Speaker 1: with us, and I said, now we we we received
- 6:38Speaker 1: grace for that because I felt like, you know, we
- 6:40Speaker 1: we didn't get her there, but God helped us. So
- 6:42Speaker 1: for these last two kids, we ain't gonna do that
- 6:45Speaker 1: this time. I'm gonna make sure that we do everything
- 6:48Speaker 1: that we need to do to make sure they get
- 6:50Speaker 1: to where they need to go. We'll be right back
- 6:52Speaker 1: with more Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald. Now
- 6:58Speaker 1: let's return to Money Make in Conversations Masterclass with Rashan McDonald.
- 7:03Speaker 1: But you know, you've been a guy like you said,
- 7:05Speaker 1: it's you've been in the music business. And when I
- 7:08Speaker 1: throw out the word R and B gospel, I thought
- 7:10Speaker 1: hip hop, all of them are really have their own
- 7:14Speaker 1: dominant force. They dominant sound, they dominant role. You know,
- 7:17Speaker 1: you can say that, you know that hip hop kind
- 7:20Speaker 1: of pulls from R and B, but that gospel genre,
- 7:23Speaker 1: you know, feeds to the R and B, the secular
- 7:26Speaker 1: sound and all that. How do you, in your mind
- 7:29Speaker 1: worring disseminate the difference. Is it's the lyrics or it's
- 7:33Speaker 1: the beat. For me, it's the lyrics gospel. My definition
- 7:39Speaker 1: is the good news, right it is the news comes
- 7:42Speaker 1: in form of words, not sounds a melody. So, uh yeah,
- 7:48Speaker 1: there was at the inception of gospel music. Sound that's
- 7:52Speaker 1: only because that was the sound of that time. I
- 7:57Speaker 1: don't think it was meant to carry on forever or
- 8:00Speaker 1: not evolved. Um. And there's there's traces of all kinds
- 8:04Speaker 1: of things, uh in gospel music. Now why because gospel
- 8:09Speaker 1: is the ancestor for all music. Everything starts there, right,
- 8:15Speaker 1: and so out of the cotton fields, you know, we
- 8:19Speaker 1: we created this sound and jazz springs from it. So
- 8:23Speaker 1: that's blue, so that's rock, and now hip hop is
- 8:26Speaker 1: just the gumbo that stirs it all together. We you know,
- 8:31Speaker 1: just like when we were given the scraps to eat
- 8:34Speaker 1: as slaves, you know, we took that and made you know,
- 8:37Speaker 1: so Fu, which is now the most one of those
- 8:39Speaker 1: popular cauzines in the world. It's ain now hipop most
- 8:45Speaker 1: dominant genre in the world. And what we did, what
- 8:48Speaker 1: we did this, just like Sofa, we took the scraps,
- 8:50Speaker 1: a little piece of this record, a little piece of that,
- 8:52Speaker 1: and we turned it into other things that we created.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Hip hop kind of the same thing. And that's because
- 8:57Speaker 1: really you were you were born through hip hop. I
- 9:00Speaker 1: went up to say, yeah, you know through hip hop now,
- 9:04Speaker 1: and I read I bring that up because the fact
- 9:06Speaker 1: that you're your pastor now and you're not saying that,
- 9:09Speaker 1: you know, hip hop can't be a passion of hip hop.
- 9:11Speaker 1: But these there's so many different styles of hip hop.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Did you did you walk into? There's languages that you
- 9:17Speaker 1: walk into. What defines you as a person? I want
- 9:20Speaker 1: to say, Warren. Uh. You know, people will say you're
- 9:24Speaker 1: a Christian, but that's that's ah. You know, that's the
- 9:28Speaker 1: word I seldom use because more than anything, I'm a believer, right,
- 9:32Speaker 1: because you gotta think of it. Was Jesus a Christian?
- 9:35Speaker 1: He was Jesus right, right, But I believe in Jesus.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I'm a believer in in the Word of God, and
- 9:43Speaker 1: I followed that. I lived my life by that right.
- 9:45Speaker 1: And uh, if you do that, that means you gotta
- 9:48Speaker 1: read that and understand what it is. Most people just
- 9:50Speaker 1: joined churches and follow some God that don't really know
- 9:53Speaker 1: the Bible, and so they have all these rules and
- 9:55Speaker 1: things they live by. I grew up in the house
- 9:58Speaker 1: when my father was my pastor. But he's also my father,
- 10:01Speaker 1: and he was a very learned guy. You know, he
- 10:03Speaker 1: was educated. Let me know. Early when I was trying
- 10:06Speaker 1: to impress my father by saying, Dad, you know what
- 10:09Speaker 1: I'm never gonna do any second in music, he said,
- 10:12Speaker 1: sit down from it. Let me talk to you. You said,
- 10:17Speaker 1: I was fifteen years old. He said, I said, you
- 10:19Speaker 1: started making money at this. He said, music is your passion.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Guess what. Music is your your job. Music is your career. Right,
- 10:28Speaker 1: Music is your occupation. So now what you have now
- 10:33Speaker 1: is uh across worlds. Right. You got your occupation and
- 10:38Speaker 1: you got your salvation. Now you have to have you
- 10:41Speaker 1: have to walk a bounce because you cannot let your
- 10:43Speaker 1: occupation walk all over your salvation. You gotta have a standard.
- 10:47Speaker 1: And so my father sent me out while other church
- 10:50Speaker 1: members were saying he shouldn't be doing second in music
- 10:53Speaker 1: because the church is very unfair to musicians. You can
- 10:57Speaker 1: only do gospel music. If you don't you do anything
- 11:00Speaker 1: other than gospel music, and they're going to hell. We don't,
- 11:02Speaker 1: we don't say to the to the Christian uh, doctors,
- 11:06Speaker 1: you better only work on you know, Christian patients of
- 11:09Speaker 1: if you're you only work on Christian teeth. You know
- 11:12Speaker 1: what I'm saying. My dad, My dad was like, no, man,
- 11:17Speaker 1: go out there and do the music you love. Just
- 11:20Speaker 1: have a standard, right. I love that. I love that. Yeah,
- 11:23Speaker 1: because I knew that the roadblocks and the and the
- 11:26Speaker 1: nay sayers because that's why I was talking about gifts.
- 11:29Speaker 1: You know, don't let your French family, uh, your coworkers
- 11:32Speaker 1: stop you from planning to living your dreams because so
- 11:34Speaker 1: many people will interfere and trying to tell you and
- 11:37Speaker 1: try to will their their values on you. And that's
- 11:41Speaker 1: important to be able to And so your father played
- 11:44Speaker 1: a major role in keeping you folks really and it's
- 11:48Speaker 1: really their fears, you know what I'm saying. Like my
- 11:51Speaker 1: mother was was was she was a big supporter when
- 11:54Speaker 1: it came time to me going to college or going
- 11:57Speaker 1: on the road, and had three choices of the schools.
- 12:01Speaker 1: I was gonna go to their big music school's birthday,
- 12:03Speaker 1: School of Music, University, and cal Arts here in California.
- 12:08Speaker 1: My dad said, well, listen, you have this opportunity. There
- 12:10Speaker 1: was a tour going out nur January and and I
- 12:16Speaker 1: just graduated high school and ninety three. They got this
- 12:19Speaker 1: opportunity and to play on the road with Brandy and
- 12:23Speaker 1: we're going out with boys, two men and baby Face.
- 12:26Speaker 1: And because let's let's slow that down now, Brandy when
- 12:31Speaker 1: Brandy was straight fire okay, two men, straight fire okay,
- 12:38Speaker 1: and baby Face wrote Everybody's song Okay, everybody's song. You
- 12:43Speaker 1: just graduated my high school going out with them folks
- 12:47Speaker 1: and everybody every city we went to, every black person
- 12:51Speaker 1: in the town was at that show. Right, we were
- 12:54Speaker 1: big arenas. And um My father sent me down and said, listen,
- 12:58Speaker 1: you you go to school to learn or you know
- 13:03Speaker 1: they can teach you what you're getting medy to go
- 13:05Speaker 1: out and get paid to do, right, he said, He said,
- 13:08Speaker 1: it doesn't make sense. I think you should do it.
- 13:10Speaker 1: School is gonna be here, this opportunity may not be right.
- 13:14Speaker 1: So my mother, because of her fear, was like no, no, no,
- 13:17Speaker 1: no no, but she was it's not gonna work. You
- 13:19Speaker 1: gotta get education. But that was just It's not that
- 13:21Speaker 1: she didn't love me, that was just her fear. Yes,
- 13:24Speaker 1: And so you can't other people's fear, you know, you
- 13:27Speaker 1: can't live I couldn't live my life through her fear
- 13:29Speaker 1: and other people around me that I was thinking, probably
- 13:31Speaker 1: that's a that's a that's a mistake. You got all
- 13:33Speaker 1: these schools you can go to. So I jumped out
- 13:36Speaker 1: there and never looked back, man, And I met so
- 13:38Speaker 1: many people, and it was the catalyst for what I
- 13:41Speaker 1: do now. Man, And a lot of those relationships I
- 13:43Speaker 1: still hold today absolutely. You know the beauty of this conversation,
- 13:46Speaker 1: and I'd like to say conversation I'm having with you, Warren,
- 13:49Speaker 1: you can Warren a true hit maker. He's gonna be
- 13:51Speaker 1: featured on their Unsung series an episode called hit Makers.
- 13:54Speaker 1: When you when you were being recognized and you you
- 13:57Speaker 1: got Grammys, you got the wards, and you old, and
- 14:00Speaker 1: sometimes you don't appreciate I know that. You know, it's
- 14:03Speaker 1: really crazy when you get Sometimes you get an award,
- 14:05Speaker 1: you you humbly take it, but you don't realize how
- 14:09Speaker 1: unique that award is. Because I know on this show,
- 14:12Speaker 1: because I get a lot of people used nominated. You know,
- 14:16Speaker 1: I nominated for an Oscar, nominated for a Grammy. So
- 14:20Speaker 1: doing this show, I've learned to appreciate my love Emmies. Okay,
- 14:23Speaker 1: because I got it so so because so many people
- 14:27Speaker 1: don't have it, but they're using credits to say they
- 14:30Speaker 1: were at least recognize nominated. Yeah, you know what I'm saying,
- 14:34Speaker 1: So talk about that. I realized, Man, it never gets old.
- 14:39Speaker 1: I was with because you have to make a conscious decision,
- 14:43Speaker 1: uh and be intentional about appreciating those things. I was
- 14:47Speaker 1: one time I was with a well known producer gonna
- 14:51Speaker 1: say his name is Grammys and I was in the
- 14:55Speaker 1: studio with him, and at this time, I had two
- 14:58Speaker 1: Grammys and I was in the studio visiting this guy
- 15:02Speaker 1: and we were watching TV. We're watching the Grammys on TV,
- 15:06Speaker 1: and he won Producer of the Year. While I were
- 15:10Speaker 1: sitting there watching it and his sponsors like this, I said, Man,
- 15:13Speaker 1: I'm going nuts. Oh my god, he's sitting there like this,
- 15:16Speaker 1: going oh. Man. I said to myself, I ain't never
- 15:20Speaker 1: gonna be like them now. I appreciate every award I've won.
- 15:26Speaker 1: You know, you have your Granny statues and you have
- 15:28Speaker 1: your Grammy plaques. Between all of those put together, I
- 15:31Speaker 1: might have about seventeen of those things, man, But in
- 15:34Speaker 1: terms of statues, I have five or six statues, Grammy,
- 15:39Speaker 1: you know, awards, and it's never I just won last
- 15:43Speaker 1: year this past Grammys for Best Rap Song with a
- 15:48Speaker 1: Kanye feature in um Jay z uh And it was
- 15:52Speaker 1: just the best feeling in That's like I said, you know,
- 15:56Speaker 1: I didn't really get it until I started doing my
- 15:58Speaker 1: show and I just kept seeing people say nominated, nominated, nominated,
- 16:02Speaker 1: that went wow, mom. People trying to make it Neligan's
- 16:09Speaker 1: didn't make it, but I was one of the ones
- 16:11Speaker 1: who did. We'll be right back with more money Making
- 16:13Speaker 1: Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald. Now, let's return to money
- 16:20Speaker 1: Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald. You know TV one
- 16:25Speaker 1: on song and when he reached out to you and
- 16:28Speaker 1: talked about wanting to recognize you and tell a part
- 16:31Speaker 1: of your story because you're really a documentary you know,
- 16:33Speaker 1: that's another conversation you know years old. You know you
- 16:37Speaker 1: messed with the draw person Waring. I'm I'll be knocking
- 16:39Speaker 1: on your dote like that lady from the Spell. But
- 16:41Speaker 1: excuse Mr Camp, I'm not here to see you, Eric.
- 16:44Speaker 1: I'm here to see big Dog Hire. Who want to
- 16:47Speaker 1: do a documentary on him? Tell his story? Do a movie?
- 16:49Speaker 1: You know they could do Marvin's sapp movie. They Dodge,
- 16:52Speaker 1: you can do the War one of these days to
- 16:57Speaker 1: love it? So only hit maker? What the what did
- 17:00Speaker 1: you want to say? Why did you actually do that
- 17:03Speaker 1: that particular episode one, because you know, I thought it
- 17:07Speaker 1: was a huge opportunity the first The first thing I
- 17:10Speaker 1: did was I was a little trepidacious because when you're
- 17:14Speaker 1: thinking about the show unsung Uh. You think about guys
- 17:19Speaker 1: that who are you know, older and who at the
- 17:22Speaker 1: end of their career and they're doing son to talk
- 17:24Speaker 1: about it. I'm like, wait a minute, I'm I'm writing
- 17:26Speaker 1: in the middle of list thing. I ain't. I ain't.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Oh yeah, man, you know. And and for that reason
- 17:30Speaker 1: I have not let a lot of my artists do it,
- 17:31Speaker 1: because I'm like, no, we're still in our prime. But
- 17:34Speaker 1: all they said, no, this is unsung presents the hitmakers.
- 17:37Speaker 1: It's not just you know, it's not that. So I said, okay,
- 17:40Speaker 1: let's let's let's do it. And man, it was. It
- 17:43Speaker 1: was quite an amazing thing to go back. We went
- 17:47Speaker 1: back to the church that I was born, and you know,
- 17:52Speaker 1: and I walked that block, and we went back to
- 17:54Speaker 1: my my, my neighborhood where I grew up in, which
- 17:57Speaker 1: is the reason why I called my label my block
- 17:59Speaker 1: in stems from that block, you know, uh, being growing
- 18:05Speaker 1: up on that block in south central l A fifty
- 18:07Speaker 1: second in normity. And in that we we talked to
- 18:11Speaker 1: about so many different things that I never thought about.
- 18:14Speaker 1: You know, you do your job. You know, I don't
- 18:17Speaker 1: talk about my job. I just do it. You know,
- 18:20Speaker 1: you don't I don't. I don't. Nobody asked me questions
- 18:22Speaker 1: at the end of the day. You know, who'd you
- 18:25Speaker 1: work with? That? Nobody? I just do it and I
- 18:26Speaker 1: work up in the morning, I do it again. I
- 18:28Speaker 1: do it again, and you and you look back. It's
- 18:30Speaker 1: been you know since I started this thing. It's been
- 18:33Speaker 1: over twenty years, and I'm going really like somebody's been
- 18:38Speaker 1: chronicling all these things. And it was it was a
- 18:43Speaker 1: very emotional saying, and I felt honored and blessed just
- 18:47Speaker 1: looking back and saying like, I'm at a age now
- 18:52Speaker 1: where I can still do the exact same thing I did,
- 18:54Speaker 1: but this time I'm at that age. I'm in that
- 18:57Speaker 1: middle of my forties where you know, I'm old enough.
- 19:03Speaker 1: I'm young enough to still do it, but I'm old
- 19:05Speaker 1: enough to know better to do it a better way.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely, and I love what I'm at with it,
- 19:10Speaker 1: and that that show just helped me like realize all
- 19:12Speaker 1: of that. It ain't over. I got a whole another
- 19:15Speaker 1: second half to do. Absolutely, Like the late age is
- 19:19Speaker 1: never an excuse. I'm talking to Warren Campbell or visionary music.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Uh see, he's one of these people, you know, I
- 19:25Speaker 1: teached it with that opening because he wanted the people
- 19:27Speaker 1: go warrant doing that too. Reason to say that he
- 19:31Speaker 1: had a clothing line. Y'all. Okay, now see see people
- 19:34Speaker 1: out that mad. They're happy, but they're mad. What I'm
- 19:37Speaker 1: saying he going there too? Oh heck no, come on, now,
- 19:41Speaker 1: what else are you gonna do? Cook? You're gonna start
- 19:43Speaker 1: a restaurant? Hot dogs? That what you're gonna do. Na's war.
- 19:46Speaker 1: You're preaching, you're saving souls, You're putting kids in college.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Gotta beautiful wife, she got a nasal syndicated show. You
- 19:53Speaker 1: gotta grab me, you gotta statues, she got plaques. You've
- 19:56Speaker 1: been doing this since she was came out of high school.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Now you gotta clothe the Come on, naw, stop the madness.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Tell us about Ernest Paul, Ernest Paul, Ernest Paul is uh,
- 20:10Speaker 1: Ernest Paul Campbell. My grandfather love it so. Um. One
- 20:18Speaker 1: of the reasons why you know me today is because
- 20:20Speaker 1: of this man, my grandfather. Right, there's a there's a
- 20:23Speaker 1: lamb on the shirt because people go, like, you know,
- 20:25Speaker 1: they get a little deeper. Was that for the lamb
- 20:27Speaker 1: of God? Said? It could be. It's really because my
- 20:29Speaker 1: grandfather every first Sunday of the month. He cooked. He
- 20:32Speaker 1: could lamb my grandfriend. He was an amazing cook, and
- 20:36Speaker 1: we had family dinner at his home every first Sunday.
- 20:39Speaker 1: And I mean this spread was amazing. It looked like
- 20:42Speaker 1: when that movie So Food right right right bright. That
- 20:45Speaker 1: was my granddad every first Sunday. So the story is,
- 20:49Speaker 1: I'll tell it to you succinctly, my grandfather. You could
- 20:53Speaker 1: appreciate this with Sean was to be the Jackie Robbinson
- 20:57Speaker 1: the radio Wow Wow in the thirties or forties. Um.
- 21:04Speaker 1: He was said to be the first black on air
- 21:06Speaker 1: personality at NBC Radio Wow. So he goes in, he
- 21:11Speaker 1: gets the job. M he reads the news, the sports,
- 21:16Speaker 1: and the weather. He has this amazing voice. Right this
- 21:20Speaker 1: is in New York. After he gets off the air,
- 21:23Speaker 1: uh you know, he's I'm excited, you know, and two
- 21:29Speaker 1: white men welcome to him who are also on their personalities.
- 21:33Speaker 1: While he's outside. He said, hey, good job today, and
- 21:39Speaker 1: they tell him his mother, Daisy Campbell's address in the Bronx.
- 21:45Speaker 1: He says, listen, good job today to badsh your last
- 21:48Speaker 1: day m hm, because if you come back here tomorrow,
- 21:52Speaker 1: we're gonna show up the social address and Daisy Campbell,
- 21:55Speaker 1: we're gonna kill her and we're gonna burn the house down.
- 22:00Speaker 1: And he said to me, that was during the time
- 22:03Speaker 1: that when a white person told you something like that,
- 22:05Speaker 1: you believe him exactly. But especially in the forties, he said.
- 22:14Speaker 1: So he never went back, uh, And so his dreams
- 22:18Speaker 1: just got crashed and he became He became a bus
- 22:22Speaker 1: driver in New York City Transit, drove buses for thirty
- 22:25Speaker 1: forty years, you know. And and so this is my
- 22:28Speaker 1: father's father, and so because of that, he would drill
- 22:33Speaker 1: into my dad, don't you ever let nobody tell you
- 22:37Speaker 1: what you can't do? Every day, every day. And when
- 22:41Speaker 1: I was born, my grandfather and he got older, he
- 22:44Speaker 1: came to l A to live with us, and so
- 22:46Speaker 1: I was praised in the house with my father and
- 22:48Speaker 1: my grandfather beautiful. And he would drill it into me
- 22:53Speaker 1: him and my dad, don't you ever let anybody tell
- 22:56Speaker 1: you what you can't do. And that's why I have
- 22:59Speaker 1: a album to this day. If you want to see
- 23:01Speaker 1: me turn into a maniac, Let you have an idea
- 23:05Speaker 1: of something I want to do, and you tell me
- 23:06Speaker 1: I can't do it, I'll break my neck and you're
- 23:10Speaker 1: trying to do it the same way. I'm the same way,
- 23:13Speaker 1: the same way, and so this was simple. This was
- 23:15Speaker 1: a started as a tribute to him. And I realized,
- 23:19Speaker 1: you know, I was good at designing this stuff, all
- 23:22Speaker 1: the pieces that we were making. I was like, oh,
- 23:24Speaker 1: this is amazing. And I realized, bigger guys, um because
- 23:29Speaker 1: I'm not I'm not a small guy. I'll wait two
- 23:31Speaker 1: hundred forty pounds. They don't have fly close casual clothes.
- 23:35Speaker 1: You gotta go to the store and uh, I mean
- 23:38Speaker 1: my wife went to Paris and we was gonna shot.
- 23:42Speaker 1: I couldn't buy nothing right, right, right right. So I said, what,
- 23:46Speaker 1: I don't make some fly gear for guys my size.
- 23:50Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, because they don't go ask
- 23:52Speaker 1: four X. I wear two x R. Right. They don't
- 23:55Speaker 1: try to try to find the two X of the store.
- 23:57Speaker 1: It's very hard. So I said, I'm going up the
- 24:00Speaker 1: five X. I'm not getting ready to uh go past
- 24:03Speaker 1: five xs. I don't want to feed into your old
- 24:05Speaker 1: b CD too much. But you know, I don't make
- 24:08Speaker 1: some clothes for the bigger guys. And that's how this started.
- 24:11Speaker 1: And I named it after my grandfather was a big
- 24:13Speaker 1: guy as well, and you know that's where that came from.
- 24:16Speaker 1: So we started we have a whole line right now.
- 24:18Speaker 1: You see the T shirts in the hoodies, those are
- 24:20Speaker 1: just promotional items that we're selling for a year, and
- 24:23Speaker 1: then the actual clothing line would come out two years
- 24:26Speaker 1: with all the really cool stuff that we already had planning. Like,
- 24:29Speaker 1: you know something, I got a client, you know big,
- 24:31Speaker 1: he's big size, he has a he's a his name
- 24:34Speaker 1: Jeff Jenkins. We shoot we shooting the series right now.
- 24:37Speaker 1: On that g O. He goes around the world and
- 24:39Speaker 1: it does things that you know, challenges his fears and
- 24:44Speaker 1: that outfit Earnest paul Man. We're gonna get his size
- 24:47Speaker 1: if you don't mind sending some stuff and I haven't
- 24:49Speaker 1: wearing on the on the show. Put it on social
- 24:51Speaker 1: media because his name is Jeff Jenkins. Is that social
- 24:55Speaker 1: media is called Trubby Diaries. And he's a he's right
- 24:58Speaker 1: now travel, he goes right food travel, and that GEO,
- 25:02Speaker 1: he's in fact, he's right now take. He's just left
- 25:04Speaker 1: New Zealand and he's taking the second episode to this
- 25:08Speaker 1: this week. He's in Alabama taping this second episode this week.
- 25:11Speaker 1: And like she was gonna take ten episodes the first season.
- 25:14Speaker 1: What you're talking about is somebody I love for him to,
- 25:17Speaker 1: you know, just give your extra promotion on TV showing
- 25:21Speaker 1: into the world your clothes a lot. So that's still
- 25:24Speaker 1: we got. We got brother. Jeffrey got him, and I
- 25:26Speaker 1: would appreciate that because any any promotion right now. We
- 25:29Speaker 1: I just seen uh, last week, Bill Bella, he had
- 25:32Speaker 1: a T shirt on. He was on on Instagram. I said,
- 25:35Speaker 1: I didn't because I don't know Bill. But the lady
- 25:37Speaker 1: that's that's my partner. Her name is Okill. She has
- 25:41Speaker 1: her own clothing line as well. She gave him some
- 25:43Speaker 1: stuff and he started rocking. I said, man, this is
- 25:45Speaker 1: amazing that Bill. Bill by my side. Now for Arnes
- 25:49Speaker 1: Park and look good on Rishan. Now I got a
- 25:52Speaker 1: million follows. I got a million follows. If I gotta

- 25:58Speaker 1: forty one thousand followers there, cook, Cannot I do it
- 26:01Speaker 1: for you? I wear a T shirt because I always
- 26:02Speaker 1: wearing suits when I do with TikTok cooking because that's
- 26:05Speaker 1: how that's But I put on Earnest Paul for you.
