- 1:42Speaker 1: has been a leading voice into the calling for an
- 1:44Speaker 1: in to gun violence, police brutality, and racial injustice. Please
- 1:49Speaker 1: work with to money making conversations. Rashid Wallace, Hey, Hey,
- 1:54Speaker 1: thanks for having had lots. Sash had nothing to do basketball,
- 1:58Speaker 1: just at the basketball in the beginning, but after that, man,
- 2:00Speaker 1: You're all about the community. Man, tell us about that
- 2:03Speaker 1: transition man from the NBA to be a person that
- 2:06Speaker 1: has a voice that's not tied. You know, you always
- 2:09Speaker 1: be known with sports, you always as part of your brand.
- 2:11Speaker 1: But you know the step out there can you six
- 2:13Speaker 1: ft eleven almost seven feet tall? So you're always gonna
- 2:16Speaker 1: make an interest in any room that you enter. But
- 2:19Speaker 1: but your brand of what you're trying to be known for, now,
- 2:21Speaker 1: what is it? Um? Just just being a good person
- 2:27Speaker 1: to sum it up, you know, I just I just
- 2:29Speaker 1: try to be me, do what I can do, um
- 2:31Speaker 1: the most highest, put me in a position where I
- 2:34Speaker 1: can help others. Um As you mentioned on your intro.
- 2:37Speaker 1: You know, different people have different different signs of success,
- 2:40Speaker 1: and it's just a majority of people based their success,
- 2:44Speaker 1: like you said, off the money, But I don't. I
- 2:46Speaker 1: don't base my success off the money because hey, just
- 2:49Speaker 1: as fast as they coming can go. Absolutely though, to me,
- 2:52Speaker 1: I I look at what what what am I going
- 2:55Speaker 1: to leave behind? What am I here for? What am
- 2:57Speaker 1: I doing now while I'm here? To me, that's my success.
- 3:00Speaker 1: You know, I could just be sitting at home and calcultator,
- 3:03Speaker 1: you know, retire but I choose not to. I choose
- 3:06Speaker 1: to be out there in the streets and in the
- 3:07Speaker 1: midst of it all to try to get to get
- 3:10Speaker 1: life right, to get things right in our community for
- 3:12Speaker 1: our people, to make it better and know being. And
- 3:15Speaker 1: it's really interesting because you can't avoid who you are.
- 3:18Speaker 1: You're nearly seven feet tall, so no matter where you go,
- 3:22Speaker 1: you're gonna gain attention when you come in there. You're
- 3:25Speaker 1: a good looking guy, you're tall, you dress right, and
- 3:28Speaker 1: so with that attention, you can't avoid who, what you've been,
- 3:32Speaker 1: or what you're trying to accomplish in life. And so
- 3:35Speaker 1: when you talk about your right, money can't go man.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Two thousand and eight people found that out the stock
- 3:40Speaker 1: market crash, and that money when left right and out
- 3:43Speaker 1: of everybody's pockets. And so that was a big old signal.
- 3:46Speaker 1: And so when I see that you all over the
- 3:49Speaker 1: country caring about different locations and places of need, how
- 3:52Speaker 1: does that exactly work? Do you have a staff? Do
- 3:55Speaker 1: you just you're watching television, you just have an urge
- 3:58Speaker 1: to contribute? How does that work with your what your
- 4:01Speaker 1: what's your organization? Machi, It's not even the organization. It
- 4:05Speaker 1: was just all from the muffle um. You know, I don't.
- 4:08Speaker 1: I don't have time to sit back and and get
- 4:11Speaker 1: proper clearance to go here and then get this permitting,
- 4:14Speaker 1: that permit, because by the time those things happen, you know,
- 4:18Speaker 1: your your cause is lost and people need these resources now,
- 4:22Speaker 1: not a couple of months from around when people downtown
- 4:25Speaker 1: decided to stamp it and now it's a permit. Okay,
- 4:28Speaker 1: we could do it. No they don't. They need to
- 4:30Speaker 1: help now. And that's that's always been the thing, is,
- 4:34Speaker 1: you know, just trying to trying to do what I
- 4:36Speaker 1: could do. I've seen it growing up in my neighborhood.
- 4:38Speaker 1: I got my I guess you could say my community
- 4:41Speaker 1: love I got from my babysitter when I was a
- 4:46Speaker 1: young fella. My babysitter was block captain and so being
- 4:50Speaker 1: that block captain, she was responsible for how to block
- 4:53Speaker 1: look you know all of all the other homes, you know,
- 4:56Speaker 1: the front houses, and you know how everything looks. And
- 4:59Speaker 1: to me seeing that growing up was like okay, dag
- 5:02Speaker 1: mr core. She she really into, you know, into her
- 5:05Speaker 1: neighbors and this and that, and then it just went
- 5:07Speaker 1: on from there, you know, just showing different love and
- 5:10Speaker 1: doing and doing this and doing that, So I mean,
- 5:13Speaker 1: I get the joy out of it. Man. It's you know,
- 5:15Speaker 1: I spent my birthday up in Flint, um a couple
- 5:18Speaker 1: of weeks ago. My birthday was on the sevent team.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I spent my birthday in Flint passing out resources to
- 5:24Speaker 1: the people that needed it. Man. And and to me,
- 5:27Speaker 1: that was my birthday present. You know when I knocked
- 5:29Speaker 1: on them doors, you know, me and me and the
- 5:31Speaker 1: other brothers and sisters that were out there, and we're
- 5:33Speaker 1: knocking on them doors and we're dropping these packages off.
- 5:35Speaker 1: And to see the smile on a lot of these
- 5:38Speaker 1: people faces like like Yo, that's that's it for me.
- 5:42Speaker 1: That's that's that's what I do it for. I don't
- 5:44Speaker 1: do it for no recognition. I can care less about
- 5:46Speaker 1: a TV camera being out there or whatever. No do
- 5:49Speaker 1: it for the people. Well, you know, so would you?
- 5:51Speaker 1: Would you being there? Tell us my listeners and sometimes
- 5:55Speaker 1: in some situation viewers, what what is going on in
- 5:58Speaker 1: Flint right now? You was up there passing out care packages.
- 6:02Speaker 1: So there's still a need to be doing that. So
- 6:04Speaker 1: what exactly from from a social standpoint, political standpoint, what
- 6:08Speaker 1: are they doing for those people up there? Well? Everyone
- 6:12Speaker 1: thinks that it's settled because the state of Michigan gave
- 6:16Speaker 1: the residents to Flint six hundred million dollars. But that's
- 6:20Speaker 1: that's not a lot of money because breaking it down,
- 6:22Speaker 1: it's only gonna come out to something about I think,
- 6:24Speaker 1: like hundred per person who was affected by this. And
- 6:29Speaker 1: then you have to prove that you lived in this
- 6:32Speaker 1: community or you know, through doctors notes or whatever. I
- 6:36Speaker 1: guess that you have, uh, you know, these illnesses from
- 6:40Speaker 1: the lead being in the water. So you pretty much
- 6:42Speaker 1: got to prove it to me. I see it all.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I see, I see the kids up there, you know
- 6:48Speaker 1: when it first happened. I'm up there in the community.
- 6:50Speaker 1: And I really wish I still had the picture. I know,
- 6:53Speaker 1: my cousin Mike, but we we took samples of the water.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Like man, this this water was sober. Just imagine if
- 6:59Speaker 1: you lived out in the field, right, it's a big
- 7:02Speaker 1: rainstorm and you went out there and you got some
- 7:05Speaker 1: mud from the mud hole and you put it all
- 7:08Speaker 1: in the bottle and that and that whole muddy water.
- 7:11Speaker 1: That's how this was up in Flint. And this and
- 7:13Speaker 1: this is a yes, this is a catastrophe, like it
- 7:16Speaker 1: wasn't allow when you saw pictures of this contaminated water
- 7:20Speaker 1: looking lime green and you know do do brown and
- 7:23Speaker 1: all that that was real. And this is what they're
- 7:26Speaker 1: trying to tell the people that you gotta bathe in,
- 7:29Speaker 1: you gotta drink it. You know. Just think about our
- 7:31Speaker 1: kids in elementary scores cooking, you know every day like
- 7:34Speaker 1: we take we take it for granted how much we
- 7:37Speaker 1: use water every day. You know, when you wake up,
- 7:39Speaker 1: what's the first thing you do. You know, you take
- 7:41Speaker 1: your shower, bright your teeth and all that. Right then,
- 7:44Speaker 1: as you just mentioned water for your cooking, you know,
- 7:47Speaker 1: your coffee or your tea, you know, every day and
- 7:49Speaker 1: these they have to stip out of of of of
- 7:53Speaker 1: with bottle waters, with gallon bottle waters, you know, and
- 7:56Speaker 1: you gotta heat this up. This is how you gotta
- 7:58Speaker 1: watch and wash up taking bird back, you know. And
- 8:01Speaker 1: it's just a certain area in Flint now. So so
- 8:08Speaker 1: you know, I'm kind of tap into your emotions because
- 8:12Speaker 1: I know you always in the NBA, you huld always
- 8:14Speaker 1: show me you an emotional guy. And you're seeing this
- 8:16Speaker 1: because a lot of the stuff is out of your hands.
- 8:18Speaker 1: You know, you can't do anything or you can go
- 8:20Speaker 1: up there, you can pass it that. But you know,
- 8:22Speaker 1: this is only lack of that. They say, a band
- 8:24Speaker 1: band aide over a gunshot. Really, that's all it is.
- 8:27Speaker 1: And so how do you how do do you walk
- 8:30Speaker 1: away from that? And and how do you maintain some
- 8:33Speaker 1: degree of not just wanted to punch somebody in the
- 8:36Speaker 1: face for being stupid because they see the same thing
- 8:39Speaker 1: you see and they have the power to correct that problem. Yeah,
- 8:43Speaker 1: in fact, and but the people that they have the
- 8:45Speaker 1: power to correct the problem are dragging their feet. Why
- 8:49Speaker 1: because them, their family and loved ones don't live in
- 8:54Speaker 1: this area right here. It is like like it's it's
- 8:58Speaker 1: one specific um area where we go to and Flint
- 9:01Speaker 1: where it's uh, it's a majority of elderly people living.
- 9:06Speaker 1: So you know, of course they can't get out there
- 9:08Speaker 1: to that grocery store. You know, no matter if they
- 9:11Speaker 1: got younger people in their family or not, you might
- 9:13Speaker 1: might not be able to get out there. Or you know,
- 9:15Speaker 1: you live, you and your husband or you and your wife.
- 9:18Speaker 1: You know, y'all living body ourselves and takes y'all, you know,
- 9:20Speaker 1: some time to be able to go out and do things. Well,
- 9:23Speaker 1: that's why we're here, you know, and we we we
- 9:26Speaker 1: I don't have no problem with going door to door,
- 9:29Speaker 1: you know, because it's it's first of all, it's all
- 9:30Speaker 1: a peaceful matter. And if the people like the want
- 9:33Speaker 1: of the resources, boom, I'm gonna leave them on sentiments
- 9:35Speaker 1: side of the door. It's not it's no problem. You know.
- 9:38Speaker 1: I still hope you have a blessed day. So it's
- 9:40Speaker 1: it's it's all about. It's all about just just as
- 9:44Speaker 1: you mentioned, to look on those people's faces when we leave,
- 9:47Speaker 1: and for us to say, like, yo, we'll be back
- 9:50Speaker 1: up in a couple of months. You know, we're gonna
- 9:51Speaker 1: get the resources together again. Like they look forward to that.
- 9:54Speaker 1: It's like almost like you know, a Christmas to some people,
- 9:57Speaker 1: because it's like through this city, through the state, they
- 10:01Speaker 1: don't care about them, but we gotta let them know. Hey, look,
- 10:05Speaker 1: y's of our brothers and sis. We care about y'all.
- 10:08Speaker 1: We care what's happening to y'all. And that's why we're
- 10:10Speaker 1: here now, you know. That's what There's the number of
- 10:13Speaker 1: cities I missed. You know, Clinton is pretty obvious. What's
- 10:15Speaker 1: gonna flint, excuse me, pretty obviously going to I mentioned Philadelphia, Charlotte,
- 10:20Speaker 1: Dorham and Detroit as some of the cities that you
- 10:22Speaker 1: you went in and underserved communities. Can you tell us
- 10:25Speaker 1: what you're doing in Philadelphia, what you've been doing, because
- 10:28Speaker 1: I like to really the people to hear your story
- 10:30Speaker 1: because you know, man, you're all over the country, you
- 10:32Speaker 1: know and and and and participate in trying to make change.
- 10:36Speaker 1: And I know you say, hey man, I don't care
- 10:37Speaker 1: for camera out there or uh, somebody's not there take pictures,
- 10:42Speaker 1: but I wish they are. I hope they are. I've
- 10:44Speaker 1: seen you, so for me, I've seen because we need
- 10:46Speaker 1: to have this story told because you're you're living it
- 10:49Speaker 1: and it needs to be documented. And and that's one
- 10:52Speaker 1: of the reasons I wanted to bring you on the show.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Hey man, I know I'm a big fan of your
- 10:55Speaker 1: NBA career, but man, what you're doing in the community
- 10:58Speaker 1: is amazing. Man. And so what what do you What
- 11:01Speaker 1: was the challenges in Philadelphia? Well, the first thing we're doing,
- 11:07Speaker 1: um coming up October sixteenth and seventeen, UM the sixteenths
- 11:13Speaker 1: myself Leonard Stewart, who's the coach at Simon Gratz High School,
- 11:18Speaker 1: and all the powers to be at Grass High school,
- 11:20Speaker 1: we're trying to put together, um, a memorial for a
- 11:24Speaker 1: former player who got killed to some senseless gun violence
- 11:30Speaker 1: and um and so we're gonna put a rally together,
- 11:34Speaker 1: you know, to drop the guns and get some hugs
- 11:36Speaker 1: or you know, any type of slogan like that. But
- 11:38Speaker 1: the main catches it's all about peace. You know, for
- 11:41Speaker 1: us to we're always talking about all the white man
- 11:44Speaker 1: is the white man that well guess well, well, if
- 11:46Speaker 1: you help yourself out first, you know, you can't blame
- 11:48Speaker 1: them for everything. You can't blame the white man for
- 11:50Speaker 1: everything because we do a lot of it to ourselves.
- 11:53Speaker 1: So if we if we gain that knowledge, and and
- 11:56Speaker 1: one thing I'd like to say is positivity is power.
- 12:00Speaker 1: You know, even though negatively travel faster, everybody's spreading it
- 12:04Speaker 1: more and saying it more. But guess what, the power
- 12:06Speaker 1: of positivity it can travel just as fast. You. All
- 12:11Speaker 1: you gotta do is get that right moment with the
- 12:13Speaker 1: right people to touch other people. And what we have
- 12:16Speaker 1: going on is the drop the gun dropping. In October seventeen,
- 12:20Speaker 1: we're going up to the Lanna Young Recreation Center in
- 12:23Speaker 1: East Germantown and we were stationed there and we're gonna
- 12:26Speaker 1: do the same things that we do and Flint and
- 12:29Speaker 1: in other places where we're knocking on door to door,
- 12:31Speaker 1: pack not recently. It's hard right now for everybody out here, man,
- 12:35Speaker 1: I know it really is. It really is. And then
- 12:37Speaker 1: when you when you want to be a varce to
- 12:39Speaker 1: end gun violence, police brutality, and racial injustice, you know,
- 12:43Speaker 1: we all know we're doing the pandemic there. Uh. I
- 12:46Speaker 1: would tell people that, you know, I'm older than you,
- 12:49Speaker 1: and so I don't you know the affect that I'm
- 12:52Speaker 1: not comfortable when a police officer pulls me over, even
- 12:55Speaker 1: though I know I've got nothing wrong. That that's not fair,
- 12:58Speaker 1: that's not fair, and and and and what happened to
- 13:03Speaker 1: George Floyd kind of ignited not just black people, white
- 13:06Speaker 1: people finally kind of salt and you know, it's like
- 13:09Speaker 1: a perfect storm pandemic. They're at the house, they're getting
- 13:11Speaker 1: to watch something that everybody kind of knew, their parents
- 13:14Speaker 1: knew for sure, the young people were being shielded by
- 13:17Speaker 1: They open their eyes and go, Okay, that's why I
- 13:19Speaker 1: joyed seeing so many white people marching. I like that,
- 13:23Speaker 1: that brings up, that brings George to my heart. And
- 13:26Speaker 1: so when you're talking about battling or trying to bring
- 13:28Speaker 1: attention to it. How what what role are you playing
- 13:31Speaker 1: in all that? Rashid just just being there for the people.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Um as I mentioned, it's not about the cameras or whatever.
- 13:41Speaker 1: If I know I have some celebrity friends, you know,
- 13:45Speaker 1: ex teammates or whatever that can spare their time, sir, well,
- 13:48Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't necessarily need money. Like I
- 13:50Speaker 1: tell everybody, they're always oh man, how can I how
- 13:53Speaker 1: can I donate this? And there I say, Hey, first off,
- 13:55Speaker 1: I'm not I'm not a foundation. I'm not an organization.
- 13:58Speaker 1: I do this from the muffle. So what you're gonna
- 14:01Speaker 1: have to do is, I'll let you know the story
- 14:05Speaker 1: that we're using. Like up when I was going up
- 14:07Speaker 1: to Flint, we used the Walmart that was in Detroit.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Everybody who wanted to who couldn't be there to want
- 14:13Speaker 1: to chip in, you know, to get the water and resources. Okay,
- 14:15Speaker 1: call of Walmart is purchased, and then we're putting it
- 14:18Speaker 1: on our truck, on one of the palettes on our
- 14:20Speaker 1: truck to go up there. So it's that way, you know,
- 14:24Speaker 1: you're getting it right there. It's not it's not uh
- 14:29Speaker 1: have to go through this funnel or that funnel. No,
- 14:31Speaker 1: the resources going right there. If you want to buy
- 14:35Speaker 1: uh two hundred dollars worth of baby diapers, then guess
- 14:39Speaker 1: what it will be there, two hundred illars worth a
- 14:41Speaker 1: baby diapers, you know, if and a buck about it.
- 14:43Speaker 1: You know, I don't. I don't want to become an
- 14:46Speaker 1: organization to where I have people doubting me, doubting what
- 14:49Speaker 1: I'm doing and thinking that their money like, oh man,
- 14:53Speaker 1: you know that money ain't doing nothing. They just that's
- 14:55Speaker 1: a scam. No, I'm not a scam. You know. I'm
- 14:58Speaker 1: right there with it, and it can't be right. You know.
- 15:02Speaker 1: It's important that you say that because people do question you.
- 15:05Speaker 1: You know, but you're a successful person. He's just out
- 15:07Speaker 1: here temporary. That's why I like what you said. You
- 15:09Speaker 1: tell the people you come back, because people don't. They
- 15:11Speaker 1: think it's a one off and you are celebrity, your star,
- 15:14Speaker 1: and so oh he's down here just to make himself
- 15:16Speaker 1: feel good this week. But when you come back, that
- 15:19Speaker 1: validates you to the community. It really does. And I've
- 15:22Speaker 1: been in that position. I've been in a position with
- 15:24Speaker 1: I've spoken just every students that these are one step
- 15:28Speaker 1: away from going to jail if they make one more mistake.
- 15:30Speaker 1: And their biggest cry to me was, now you ain't
- 15:33Speaker 1: gonna come back? Yeah, what you're gonna get up out
- 15:35Speaker 1: of here? And you don't know that you know your
- 15:37Speaker 1: time's up. Okay, they get a little half clap. You know,
- 15:40Speaker 1: she that you and so. But but I had to
- 15:43Speaker 1: come back every week before I got them to believe
- 15:47Speaker 1: that I cared about them. And that's really hard. And
- 15:50Speaker 1: that's why you know what I'm talking to you. You
- 15:51Speaker 1: understand what I'm saying. It's like, that's why I understand
- 15:54Speaker 1: why you went to high school coaching. I'm sure because
- 15:57Speaker 1: you wanted to reach these kids and show that you care.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Plus you have a your your success story in the
- 16:03Speaker 1: sport that they want to play. You went to college
- 16:06Speaker 1: and then you proceed into last an NBA for sixteen
- 16:09Speaker 1: years using All Star. So so that's really you an
- 16:13Speaker 1: example you're using in your life as an example to them.
- 16:15Speaker 1: I'm assuming correct, definitely, because I'm definitely not coaching for
- 16:21Speaker 1: the pay. I'll tell you that, well, you said the muzzle.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Now come over, you said the muzzle. Now you know
- 16:28Speaker 1: that that high basketball it's not I love it, you know.
- 16:32Speaker 1: It's I have sense to mold and guy these young
- 16:36Speaker 1: kids into becoming something in their lives. You might not
- 16:39Speaker 1: necessarily be a pal athlete, but you would be a professional. Uh.
- 16:51Speaker 1: This is actually the past season I had and five fingers,
- 16:56Speaker 1: So I don't I can't take credit for the three
- 17:00Speaker 1: of them for the simple fact that they were playing football,
- 17:03Speaker 1: so they already were. I was just the fact that
- 17:06Speaker 1: they're athletic and couldn't play basketball. But I had two
- 17:09Speaker 1: guys on it. We're seeing and on college and I
- 17:14Speaker 1: don't know, it wasn't a big college do whatever, but
- 17:16Speaker 1: guess what it was the college to help them advance
- 17:19Speaker 1: their life, like to get that preparation right. And that's
- 17:22Speaker 1: and that's what it's all about. That's what I love.
- 17:24Speaker 1: You know. It's a hard road, really, that's what Hey,
- 17:30Speaker 1: that's why I coach here, absolutely, you know. And like
- 17:32Speaker 1: I said, like you said, the thing that to your
- 17:34Speaker 1: mantra has always been it is not about the money.
- 17:36Speaker 1: And so I didn't expect them when I was talking
- 17:38Speaker 1: about high school. I wouldn't expect you just say they're
- 17:40Speaker 1: paying you, because we know that's not the case. We
- 17:43Speaker 1: know that you're there to change lives. And when I
- 17:46Speaker 1: look at your whole agenda, it's about changing lives. Now.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Now you have a podcast and and it's called Let's
- 17:52Speaker 1: Get Technical. Um, I'm assuming that's uh tied to some
- 17:56Speaker 1: things you you did in your career. Uh, she said,
- 18:00Speaker 1: you set the record, you know, because cause I tell
- 18:02Speaker 1: everybody about the record. You're sett in two thousand and
- 18:04Speaker 1: two thousand and one received forty technical files over a
- 18:08Speaker 1: span of eighty games, about one technical file for every
- 18:12Speaker 1: two games. What was going through your mind that season,
- 18:17Speaker 1: because she um, I had a lot of things, you know,
- 18:21Speaker 1: I ask them some family things, and you know, just
- 18:23Speaker 1: just some of the pressures of just just playing and
- 18:26Speaker 1: wanting to win, and you know, playing against great adversaries
- 18:29Speaker 1: at that time. UM, it was it was also a
- 18:33Speaker 1: fact of you know that, in my opinion, they tried
- 18:36Speaker 1: to control me, and like, I know, I'm a grown man.
- 18:40Speaker 1: You're not going to control me. I'm respectable. I'm not
- 18:42Speaker 1: gonna do nothing stupid to jeopardize my job. But but damn,
- 18:47Speaker 1: let me be me. I'm gonna do my work. And
- 18:50Speaker 1: and then you know it all it all came out
- 18:53Speaker 1: in the end, when you know, I was vindicated through
- 18:55Speaker 1: certain actions and you know it's really important, like you're
- 18:59Speaker 1: on that with as well. So I'm I'm based in
- 19:01Speaker 1: Atlanta right now, but I'm from Houston, Texas. So I
- 19:04Speaker 1: know Bondy well ball state baller, you know when he
- 19:07Speaker 1: was USTR Rockets and you ranging him up in Portland
- 19:10Speaker 1: when he was in Portland, right when he was drafted
- 19:12Speaker 1: by the Trail Players, right, So did your Bondy immediately
- 19:16Speaker 1: just a relationship they kind of like grew out and
- 19:18Speaker 1: you guys just because you know, you got traded several
- 19:20Speaker 1: times and so did he How did you guys maintain
- 19:22Speaker 1: this relationship? Well, it was the first Bondie in my
- 19:26Speaker 1: rookie you know, that's that's my guy right there. Absolutely, Um,
- 19:31Speaker 1: he was my rookie in Portland. We drafted him and
- 19:34Speaker 1: when he came like truth be told, I didn't know
- 19:36Speaker 1: nothing about Bondi because at the time, you know, the
- 19:41Speaker 1: powers to be that we're in the front office wasn't
- 19:43Speaker 1: pretty much sharing who they had ideas of drafting or
- 19:48Speaker 1: any of that. They didn't share that with us. So
- 19:50Speaker 1: what was fine with me? Hey, I had no problem
- 19:52Speaker 1: with it. But when Bondy first came in there and
- 19:57Speaker 1: the first practice that we had, you know, he was
- 20:01Speaker 1: a little timid. He was a little timid because he
- 20:03Speaker 1: didn't know quite what to expect because it was all
- 20:06Speaker 1: new for him because six months before he was just
- 20:09Speaker 1: watching this on TV and here it is. Now he's
- 20:12Speaker 1: in practice with it. So you know, that really does
- 20:17Speaker 1: affect players like that, you know, to come in and
- 20:19Speaker 1: see you guys and realize they are on the floor
- 20:22Speaker 1: with you guys. Does it really affect players like that? Oh? Yes,
- 20:26Speaker 1: it does. It does. It's it's it's everybody gets star struck,
- 20:31Speaker 1: especially if it's a player you like. Like when I
- 20:34Speaker 1: first came into the league. Man, let me tell you this.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Patrick Ewing was my guy, all right, And so I
- 20:42Speaker 1: came into the league playing against Pat. Pat bust my ass.
- 20:45Speaker 1: I'm mainly I'm mainly still in all like yo, and
- 20:49Speaker 1: I'm playing against Pat Ewing. We dunking on me. I'm
- 20:54Speaker 1: playing against Pat and he hitting the little fade away
- 20:57Speaker 1: jump shot. I'm like, man, So yeah, we get start struck.
- 21:00Speaker 1: But Bronie snapped out of it within the first week though,
- 21:03Speaker 1: and once he came around, we've seen he was a dog.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Oh yeah, young fellow, you you're gonna be good on
- 21:08Speaker 1: this team. Come now, you know I'll be remiss to
- 21:13Speaker 1: talk about you. You got to play against Michael Jordan's
- 21:17Speaker 1: you know, I didn't all I was just a fan
- 21:20Speaker 1: just watching the guy. And dude, give us your impression
- 21:23Speaker 1: of playing against this guy and his his abilities and
- 21:27Speaker 1: his talents on the basketball court. We're just talking about
- 21:29Speaker 1: the basketball court and Michael Jordan. Um. I would say
- 21:34Speaker 1: he's probably one of the top competitors that I've ever
- 21:38Speaker 1: seen and played again, you know, and and and literally
- 21:42Speaker 1: he wants to beat every game. It could be anything
- 21:47Speaker 1: like you guys can be playing pig or horse, or like, oh,
- 21:51Speaker 1: I bet you that I could throw this this football
- 21:54Speaker 1: further than you know you can't. He wants to be
- 21:57Speaker 1: He's that competitive where he wants to beat a free game.
- 22:01Speaker 1: And that's what that's what drove him, That's what that's
- 22:03Speaker 1: what drove him to be to the player that he
- 22:05Speaker 1: was throughout his career. Because I'm gonna be the best.
- 22:08Speaker 1: You better be ready because I'm coming I'm gonna be
- 22:10Speaker 1: the best. And playing against him, it was the same
- 22:12Speaker 1: thing I just mentioned about. Boy, I was in all
- 22:15Speaker 1: too the first time I played against Mike when I
- 22:18Speaker 1: was in Washington, you know, because again I'm I'm watching
- 22:21Speaker 1: this man, you know, up in adult contest and in
- 22:24Speaker 1: the championships and boom now here, I got a front
- 22:27Speaker 1: row seat to see his brother, so it was it
- 22:31Speaker 1: was definitely fun. But he's a hell of a competitor. Cool. Now,
- 22:35Speaker 1: now you got a hell of a contetitor, competitor on
- 22:37Speaker 1: your podcast show. Let's get technical. Now, we talked a
- 22:40Speaker 1: lot of things about the community. What is your podcast
- 22:43Speaker 1: show and what is your interview angling what is your
- 22:45Speaker 1: approach and what what is the point of view of
- 22:48Speaker 1: your podcast show. Let's get technical with Bonsy Wells Well
- 22:52Speaker 1: Bonds and I are our main thing is to get
- 22:55Speaker 1: information out there and have fun with it, to be different.
- 22:59Speaker 1: You know, there are a lot of professional athletes who
- 23:02Speaker 1: have their own lane and dealing with podcasts and you know,
- 23:06Speaker 1: some YouTube stuff and all of that. But Bondsi and now,
- 23:09Speaker 1: of course we're different, two different personalities, but we're gonna
- 23:13Speaker 1: let the people know from our point of view. You know,
- 23:17Speaker 1: we're there, we're we're we're there in the community. You know,
- 23:20Speaker 1: Bondsi dust community work as well up there in Indiana
- 23:23Speaker 1: where he lives at UM our our our whole show
- 23:27Speaker 1: is just more than basketball. We're more than about even
- 23:31Speaker 1: though that's our that was our job. But you know,
- 23:34Speaker 1: we want to be known for having some insight on football, boxing, baseball. Uh,
- 23:39Speaker 1: you know, a whole lot of social injustice that's going
- 23:41Speaker 1: on now. Um, just a lot of things. We touched
- 23:44Speaker 1: on every topic now the interesting things like now Bonds
- 23:48Speaker 1: as a as a hoot as they say, my as
- 23:50Speaker 1: my mom was. He's a hoot, he's funny, he's entertaining.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Uh you know, he's sarcastic. And so the personality is
- 23:57Speaker 1: because you know, uh, she's a little bit more edgier
- 24:02Speaker 1: than Bonds. But they're both passionate, but they have different
- 24:04Speaker 1: ways they get to the passion. And that's why I
- 24:07Speaker 1: enjoyed seeing seeing a couple of episodes. I laugh because
- 24:10Speaker 1: of the fact that you know, even in the in
- 24:12Speaker 1: the in the booth, there's a hight difference, okay, in
- 24:15Speaker 1: the and it's really cool. But I have you read
- 24:20Speaker 1: the book yet, Rushi, I have a couple of children's books. Okay, cool.
- 24:25Speaker 1: The reason I want to bring up this famous line
- 24:27Speaker 1: ball don't live first time I heard it, and and
- 24:30Speaker 1: and the reason I want to close the show talking
- 24:34Speaker 1: about that because it's more than just about basketball. When
- 24:38Speaker 1: I really broke it down and and it's about life
- 24:41Speaker 1: don't lie. It's about the effort. And I don't want
- 24:43Speaker 1: to get too far into description because I wanted to
- 24:46Speaker 1: be say it out of your boards, out of your tone,
- 24:48Speaker 1: out of your language, because of the fact that you
- 24:51Speaker 1: know you And when I first heard you said you know,
- 24:55Speaker 1: I was like, that's so profound. And then I did
- 24:57Speaker 1: my research, I went, wow, this is really a applies
- 25:00Speaker 1: to corporate America. This doesn't just apply. This apply to education.
- 25:04Speaker 1: This applies to what what what America is going through
- 25:07Speaker 1: right now. It doesn't lie, you know, brutality in the
- 25:10Speaker 1: COVID and ainteen, the economy, then difference between racial and
- 25:15Speaker 1: differences that we have in America, because the ball don't
- 25:17Speaker 1: lie in the end, it tells the truth. Tell us
- 25:20Speaker 1: how you come up with that phrase, ball don't lie,
- 25:23Speaker 1: And tell us if you if you ever write a
- 25:25Speaker 1: book for adults, that has to be the title of
- 25:27Speaker 1: that book. But let's go talk about ball don't lie,
- 25:30Speaker 1: because I'm just telling I know you. I know you've
- 25:32Speaker 1: talked about it, talking to have talked about it. A
- 25:34Speaker 1: lot in your life. But it's so profound man, and
- 25:38Speaker 1: and it means so much to so many different people.
- 25:40Speaker 1: When you go to flint ball don't lie it, don't
- 25:43Speaker 1: lie that a young man dying being shot. Ball don't lie,
- 25:47Speaker 1: drop these drugs. But let me say, I'm not still
- 25:50Speaker 1: in your thunder rashid tell us what ball don't lie?
- 25:52Speaker 1: How did it tell? How did it come about? And
- 25:55Speaker 1: how did you realize it was a unique phrase you
- 25:57Speaker 1: have to hold on to. Well, truthfully, I first heard
- 26:01Speaker 1: it on the schoolyards of Philly, like basketball, um, and
- 26:06Speaker 1: it was just something you know, we always said, along
- 26:08Speaker 1: with a whole lot of other you know, trash talking. Right,
- 26:11Speaker 1: So when um, it's it's like okay, say, say you
- 26:16Speaker 1: and I are playing right and boom, you try to
- 26:19Speaker 1: take me to the basket. But and you think I
- 26:23Speaker 1: fould you, but we both know I didn't foul. You
- 26:25Speaker 1: called foul because the game point and you missed the shot,
- 26:28Speaker 1: all right, and then so boom, So you get the
- 26:30Speaker 1: ball back and you missed the shot and I get
- 26:33Speaker 1: the rebound. Hey, that ball don't lie. So come on,
- 26:35Speaker 1: and now it's my turn. You know what I'm saying.
- 26:37Speaker 1: So it it just carried over to the n b A.
- 26:40Speaker 1: And you know I was mainly saying that when the
- 26:43Speaker 1: rest were called the weak cheesy fouls on me and
- 26:46Speaker 1: the guys that go to the style line, and they
- 26:48Speaker 1: missed that first Hey, balled all live. It's karma. It's
- 26:51Speaker 1: a basketball guy, right right. That's hot. Man. You know
- 26:56Speaker 1: I wanted this the first time we've spoken. Um. I
- 26:58Speaker 1: hope you keep me in your in your memories about
- 27:02Speaker 1: any opportunities if you ever want to do a documentary,
- 27:05Speaker 1: man Ball, don't lie documentary, because that's what you're doing
- 27:08Speaker 1: right now. For she one thing about my gift. Man,
- 27:11Speaker 1: I see stuff, brother, and I see it come to truth.
- 27:14Speaker 1: And you are special. Man, You're special because your story
- 27:19Speaker 1: what I need to people see your story. I want
- 27:22Speaker 1: your story on tape. I want your efforts on tape.

- 27:28Speaker 1: matter what color, on tape because you're out there doing
- 27:31Speaker 1: what you say. Man Ball, don't lie, brother, You're the truth. Man.
- 27:35Speaker 1: I appreciate that, good brother, for sure. You know, I'm
- 27:38Speaker 1: just playing my part, doing what I'm supposed to do.
- 27:40Speaker 1: You just coming off the bench, brother, that's all coming
- 27:42Speaker 1: off the bench and doing what you gotta do, or
- 27:45Speaker 1: thank you for calling my show, man, and we're gonna
- 27:47Speaker 1: talk soon, man, And you're gonna get a call from me, man,
- 27:49Speaker 1: because I'm serious. Brother. You might not want tape on you,
- 27:53Speaker 1: but I won't put some tape on you. Okay, you

- 28:00Speaker 1: gonna do. Man. You two special brother, You weren't you special? Man?
- 28:03Speaker 1: Be sitting about here talking about hey mate, muscle up.

- 28:19Speaker 1: you're doing in de charters worldwide, Durham, Charlotte, Philadelphia. All
- 28:24Speaker 1: those efforts need to be That story needs to be
