- 0:03Leadership is Shifting. We can feel it.
- 0:06There is so much change happening now.
- 0:10And today I wanted to take a few minutes and talk about what I
- 0:15call mindfulness 2.0, and maybe it's even 3.0 at this point, not
- 0:20really sure. But we hear this word all the
- 0:23time, right? Mindfulness, mindfulness, Eder
- 0:26being mindful feeling mindful. I feel like it's a very
- 0:30ubiquitous term at this point. Lee saturated and it's kind of
- 0:34lost what it really means. And I think in the traditional
- 0:37sense, what do you think of when you hear mindful leader, right,
- 0:41I want to cite my friend, Mark Thornton who wrote a book called
- 0:45how to meditate in a New York minute a few years ago and he
- 0:49defines mindfulness as being aware of what is going on
- 0:52inside. While noticing what happens on
- 0:56the outside? I think we can all identify with
- 0:59that, right? So, knowing what's going on
- 1:01inside and Be present for that while we are taking in the
- 1:05outside. Usually, with our with our five
- 1:07senses and it doesn't just mean noticing your gurgling stomach,
- 1:12or your tensed up shoulders. You're hunched over full body
- 1:17over the computer, although, that might be true.
- 1:20But it also means noticing what emotions are you feeling, right?
- 1:26And this means being really aware of your emotional state at
- 1:30all times and allowing these Oceans to be present with you.
- 1:34This is what the new part about this is the 3.0, we'll call it.
- 1:38It doesn't mean avoiding them or because you're at work, they
- 1:41don't matter or forgetting about them, or putting the stuffing
- 1:46them under the rug, really, it means actually feeling, maybe it
- 1:51might even be unpleasant uncomfortable or painful, and I
- 1:56know it was, let's all do this to its close, your eyes with me,
- 2:00for a moment, think of a Time. I'm in the last 24 hours being
- 2:05being aware of what you've been doing.
- 2:08When was the last time you took a couple minutes to really just
- 2:12be fully present? And it might be right now.
- 2:16Right? So think of that time it might
- 2:19have been listening to us your favorite song and hearing the
- 2:24words that make you smile or cry.
- 2:26Maybe it was outside getting the mail and feeling the sun on your
- 2:30face. You know, when we have these
- 2:33moments of mindfulness, Knowing, we can just potentially be with
- 2:39ourselves, new things emerged in that time in space, right?
- 2:43And I know, I think of a time when I went outside on my porch
- 2:47in San Francisco and really, just let the moment be there
- 2:51with myself. And then I noticed some sadness
- 2:54creeping in and I just wanted to cry and I didn't know why, but I
- 2:57didn't care. I really just allowed that space
- 3:00and feeling sad. And I knew because I was feeling
- 3:06Is it didn't mean anything else other than I was having this
- 3:09emotion pass over me. I didn't feel shameful and
- 3:12wasn't like, I try to avoid it, right?
- 3:15And that was because I had created this space and I do
- 3:18think that's where leadership is going, where we are available to
- 3:23create this space as the leaders in our domains, whatever that
- 3:27our Industries are who we are is as leaders and Executives but we
- 3:31allow what is going on to be present so that we can do
- 3:36something about it. And I think this is more and
- 3:40more of what we need in the leadership community in bigger
- 3:45companies, smaller companies and everything.
- 3:48So while you might be hearing this term mindful leader, think
- 3:53about it in this new way, I encourage you to kind of think
- 3:55about it, where if it, it actually means not just, being
- 4:00present to yourself, but knowing how you feel and really using
- 4:04that as data. So that you Make the moves and
- 4:07do different things. Make the call, you need to make
- 4:10go with your gut brain in your gut instinct to do something
- 4:13different. But if we lose touch with
- 4:15ourselves, if we aren't taking those times to pause, right Q,
- 4:19my favorite word, then we sit in that fear.
- 4:23Maybe, and that dictates our day, right?
- 4:26Because we didn't, we didn't speak up when we thought we
- 4:29could, or we didn't share in respond.
- 4:34When someone maybe had something to say that we didn't
- 4:37necessarily agree with, it was a conflict or things like that.
- 4:41So, mindful leaders, I truly believe are in touch with their
- 4:45emotions which is not the norm in business, or in the corporate
- 4:49world, right? Think about even 20 years ago,
- 4:5215 years ago, emotional intelligence, didn't even enter
- 4:55our vernacular, until really the mid-90s, when Daniel goleman,
- 5:00who's a guest on our podcast here, he coined this term in A
- 5:04to the business World from economic plate, the economic
- 5:10economists Olivine mayor who had talked about it in 1990, I
- 5:14believe. So, this is all kind of new, I
- 5:18would say, so, how can you be a mindful leader?
- 5:21What is it that you need to do to stay relevant now?
- 5:25And this is the coolest part you guys because we can learn this,
- 5:29that's the nice thing. It we can learn this and this is
- 5:31the number one skill that recruiters are looking for.
- 5:34That is a leadership trait for the most successful leaders of
- 5:38our time and there is no mistake.
- 5:41This is not an accident, right? So what is, what does that mean?
- 5:44What can that look like for you? If you're in this mindful leader
- 5:473.0 space. So I think the first thing is to
- 5:51be aware of what you're feeling in any given moment and that's
- 5:54really hard. Okay?
- 5:56Because we know we are not always present to be that aware
- 6:00but then the next step of that isn't just to notice it but it's
- 6:03so Allow it to inform you, maybe there's an action, you might
- 6:07take or a choice, you would make if you hadn't.
- 6:10If you had, otherwise may be ignored that you wouldn't have
- 6:13even thought of, right? So if you feel frustrated, let's
- 6:17say something's not going your way or upset about something,
- 6:20it's not about just forgetting about it, and moving on although
- 6:25we do need to do that. I'm not saying that's not
- 6:27realistic, but we do need to deal with it.
- 6:30Otherwise it will come back and be in be a Around in an in one
- 6:35shape or form that may or may not likely help us out.
- 6:39So share your thoughts responsibly is my go-to there.
- 6:44What does that mean? It means maybe talking to
- 6:47someone telling someone, we know when you said X I noticed that
- 6:51blah blah blah blah. This wasn't like what I really
- 6:55thought of this project and I felt frustrated that I had
- 6:59something to share and in actually didn't do it in the
- 7:02moment. I wanted to share it now because
- 7:03it really Keeps coming at me to talk about responsibility.
- 7:08All that means is you're taking responsibility for your thoughts
- 7:12as you say them. So you're not knee-jerk reacting
- 7:15being like, how could you do this?
- 7:17What are you thinking right? Like that's a little more
- 7:19reactivity. That's not necessarily
- 7:21responsible in that way and that's it.
- 7:25Just being aware of what you're feeling is the best way to start
- 7:28that and, and then allowing that to inform you to make your
- 7:33choices in action. Ins then I think with also is
- 7:37really important is speaking with intention as a mindful
- 7:41leader. What does that mean, right?
- 7:42So intention is aliveness with direction.
- 7:46That is the definition from dr. Bob right from the right
- 7:50foundation and your points will be stronger and you are helping
- 7:55others and yourself. Be clearer in when you have that
- 7:58more present experience knowing. Here's what I want to do.
- 8:01This is my intention. If you have a meeting tell
- 8:04Yourself before you walk in the door or maybe click on the video
- 8:08conference. What's my intention for this?
- 8:11How do I want this meeting to go?
- 8:12How do I want to show up and that can make a world of
- 8:16difference, right? You could check in with how you
- 8:18feel, right then and there you can make it a habit that you
- 8:21have a little post it on your desk or maybe in your notebook
- 8:24when you do do join others. This is something that you
- 8:27reflect on, okay? I'm feeling a little, a little
- 8:30nervous so that must mean I don't know what's going to
- 8:33happen, so I I know I need to really just focus on my
- 8:36breathing. Stay on track for what I want to
- 8:40be in my intention and go from there.
- 8:43Right? The idea is that when you shift
- 8:46to speak intentionally, you sound so much more succinct and
- 8:53your authorities, there you are present with yourself
- 8:58emotionally, as you communicate out to the world.
- 9:01What is going on in what you're thinking?
- 9:04When, and I think a bonus for this, by the way, is when you
- 9:07bring in that awareness with your breath and the body, maybe
- 9:11just ask yourself as you breathe.
- 9:14What's my, what's my feeling right now?
- 9:17Okay, then your reorienting and realigning, again with what
- 9:20matters. It's such a great thing to do
- 9:22and maybe that is your intention.
- 9:25I think it all goes hand in hand.
- 9:30So that it is being mindful why we need to be mindful leaders
- 9:34and 3.0 version. It's not just about being
- 9:37present, it's about bringing the emotions into the equation, so
- 9:41that you can act accordingly. Our emotions are everywhere.
- 9:46We feel thousands of times a day in different ways but we may or
- 9:49may not notice them because we're either conditioned not to
- 9:52feel that or don't think about it at work and I think it's time
- 9:56to change that. I think when we bring our Whole
- 9:59selves to work and we are allowed to be okay to feel
- 10:04frustrated and voice it in a safe space that can make a world
- 10:08of difference, right? Then, we're starting to build
- 10:11psychological safety in a way that maybe it didn't exist
- 10:13before and so much more is possible.
- 10:18My book pause, that is really the foundation of creating new
- 10:23habits. I would say, talk to us a lot
- 10:26about this. And it's not just, About pausing
- 10:30being doing nothing and being still, it's about intentionally
- 10:33shifting your behavior in these new ways so that you can emerge
- 10:37as a, as a leader in your own, right?
- 10:39In ways that serve you. Now, that's what being a mindful
- 10:43leader, and being relevant today, personally and
- 10:47professionally in in them personally, and professionally
- 10:51is all about. I hope you enjoyed this message
