Latest / UBS Trending / Current trade war through an EM lens

- 0:00When the
- 0:00United States runs a trade deficit, its spending more abroad
- 0:04than it earns.
- 0:05For decades.
- 0:05The rest of the world has financed
- 0:07this imbalance by purchasing American assets.
- 0:10But on April 2nd, everything changed, with U.S.
- 0:12tariffs surging from 2.5% to 25%.
- 0:16Global trade and investment flows face a historic
- 0:19restructuring through an emerging markets lens.
- 0:22How are these times affecting places around the world?
- 0:25We're going to break it all down for you right here on UBS.
- 0:27Trending.
- 0:38Hi, everyone, and thank you so much for joining us.
- 0:40I'm Anthony Pastore
- 0:41and this is UBS Trending in the hot seat today is Chief
- 0:44Investment Officer of Emerging Markets here in the CIO
- 0:47Alejo Czerwonko I'd like to thank you.
- 0:49I know you've been busily digesting as much of the news flow
- 0:52as you could, especially since the tariffs
- 0:55announcement was instituted on April 2nd,
- 0:58which we all anticipate.
- 0:59And as we said in the intro
- 1:01today, we're looking at it from an emerging markets lens.
- 1:04And I think
- 1:04probably one of the things that I would ask
- 1:06you is explaining a trade war
- 1:09and really what it looks like through
- 1:12an emerging markets lens, because we've talked about Europe,
- 1:14we talk about Canada,
- 1:15but there's lots of China, Mexico, India, a lot of countries,
- 1:19Asian countries that are very much
- 1:21going to be impacted potentially by the tariffs here in the US.
- 1:24Absolutely. You said it.
- 1:25We anticipated Liberation Day.
- 1:28Nobody expected this size of announcement.
- 1:31It's gigantic.
- 1:33We're talking about effective US tariff rates
- 1:36in the 25% realm, which is not seen in 100 years.
- 1:41So this is a big deal.
- 1:43If it sticks, we will see
- 1:46deep changes to the way goods flow across borders,
- 1:50deep changes to the way capital flows across borders.
- 1:53There are two sides of the same coin.
- 1:56If the US runs a trade deficit,
- 1:59this means the country is buying a lot more goods from abroad
- 2:03than it's selling abroad.
- 2:05In other words, like any family corporation
- 2:07that is living beyond its means, it needs financing.
- 2:12It needs people to plug that gap.
- 2:14For decades, foreigners were happy to provide
- 2:18that financing in the shape of buying US assets.
- 2:22U.S. stocks, U.S.
- 2:23bonds.
- 2:24Now, if the United States wants to eliminate this trade deficit,
- 2:29then capital might not flow as freely across borders.
- 2:32That's another implication.
- 2:34Yeah, which impacts everyone literally around the globe, us
- 2:38and our trade partners,
- 2:40whether they be developed or in this case, emerging.
- 2:42But we can't really not focus on Asia
- 2:45because Asian countries seem to have really bear
- 2:49the brunt of these sweeping tariffs.
- 2:52And by huge numbers, we know that the effective rate
- 2:55for China is something like 54%.
- 2:58But, you know, and interestingly, I saw an article talking about
- 3:02how China is getting together with North, South Korea and Japan
- 3:06to figure out a coordinated tariff response.
- 3:09So clearly they are planning on saying something
- 3:11or coming up with some plan or a retaliation
- 3:14or a reconciliation.
- 3:17But what do you expect to hear from countries
- 3:21like China
- 3:22and and the other countries that are in the Asian region?
- 3:26You're right.
- 3:26Asian countries have been affected the most.
- 3:29China is in the eye of the storm with an effective rate,
- 3:32as we speak, of 54% or maybe more given retaliatory dynamics.
- 3:37Right.
- 3:38But it hasn't been only China.
- 3:40It's been the China plus one set of countries.
- 3:43A lot of manufacturers over
- 3:44the last few years have diversified away from China
- 3:47and expanded capacity in Vietnam until and in Cambodia.
- 3:51Right.
- 3:52All of this additional markets are feeling
- 3:55the heat of significantly higher tariffs.
- 3:58This is not going to be an easy adjustment period for Asia.
- 4:02But make no mistake, policymakers are going to ease
- 4:06monetary policy, fiscal policy and try to help their economies.
- 4:10A economies adjust and redirect resources.
- 4:14Importantly,
- 4:15towards the end of this month,
- 4:16we've got a leadership meeting out of China.
- 4:18The Politburo meeting is taking place,
- 4:21and we will see a lot more details about
- 4:24just how aggressively Chinese policymakers are going to ease.
- 4:27And you even write in your recent, emerging markets
- 4:30monthly publication that Asian economic growth
- 4:33could decline 1 or 2 percentage points, dropping below 4%.
- 4:36It was 5.1% in 2024.
- 4:39That's significant.
- 4:41It is very sizable.
- 4:42It goes to show the global implications of this decision.
- 4:46And, it once again, if this tariff rates stick,
- 4:50they stay at this levels.
- 4:52We might see a global economic impact
- 4:55with activity coming down across every single region.
- 4:59Right.
- 5:00When we started off after the inauguration,
- 5:02the first three countries
- 5:04we heard mostly about potential
- 5:05tariffs were China, Mexico, Canada.
- 5:07So let's switch over to North America.
- 5:11What a change.
- 5:12It went from three countries to almost every country.
- 5:16So that obviously there was shock when people saw that giant list
- 5:19that they were holding up at the white House on Liberation Day.
- 5:23So let's talk about Latin America
- 5:24specifically, because including Canada
- 5:26in that just in this description,
- 5:28Canada and Mexico really were spared the brunt, as we're saying,
- 5:31contradictory to what we thought would happen
- 5:33because of the Usmca,
- 5:35which covers a big portion of exports to the U.S.
- 5:37but with other Latin American countries,
- 5:41they seem relatively insulated a little bit.
- 5:43So what's the economic impact for Latin America overall?
- 5:46For starters,
- 5:47the fact that Canada and Mexico
- 5:49were the only two countries globally to be excluded
- 5:52from that April 2nd list is quite notable.
- 5:55That's right.
- 5:55And it points to maybe the emergence
- 5:59of a fortress North America trade bloc.
- 6:02Right. Time will tell.
- 6:04We'll see if there's additional changes.
- 6:05But for now, this seems to be a policy priority.
- 6:09You cannot fight everybody at the same time.
- 6:12Mexico and Canada can be part of the solution
- 6:15rather than become part of the problem.
- 6:17But more broadly, in Latin America, it's been quite shocking
- 6:20that every Latin American country was tariff
- 6:23at 10%, the lowest of any other tariff rate out there.
- 6:28And so you're starting to see some headlines,
- 6:30such as Apple exploring the possibility of expanding production
- 6:34in countries such as Brazil.
- 6:36This is not surprising.
- 6:37People are trying to find a way around this new restrictions.
- 6:42Right.
- 6:42And so when you think about how cheap Latin American stocks,
- 6:46bonds and currencies already were placed,
- 6:50the fact that they weren't that affected by tariffs,
- 6:53the region emerges as a relatively safer
- 6:56haven in this time of turbulence.
- 6:59Investment wise.
- 7:00Is that an opportunity then would you then
- 7:03what are basically the question is what are you recommending
- 7:06as somebody who is covering emerging markets?
- 7:09Clearly, given that there's more tariff percentage
- 7:12on Asian countries versus Latin American countries,
- 7:16where do you see the most investment opportunities right now?
- 7:19Look, for starters, if your portfolio is too
- 7:22geographically concentrated, we think that's a mistake.
- 7:25You get to spread your exposure across
- 7:28the Americas, Europe and Asia.
- 7:31If your portfolio is too concentrated in a single asset class,
- 7:34think about stocks.
- 7:36Don't forget you get to have bonds, you get to have alternatives.
- 7:39And in addition, I think this is time to think broadly
- 7:43and consider new asset classes in your repertoire.
- 7:47I'm thinking about gold, for instance.
- 7:50We think this is a very interesting portfolio hedge diversifier.
- 7:55So I think you got to think broadly in
- 7:58whatever recipe has worked for you over the last 15 years.
- 8:01It's unlikely to work again, given how much it's changing.
- 8:04Yeah, gold is an interesting, commodity.
- 8:06As we've seen.
- 8:07It's held up very well comparatively.
- 8:10Obviously there was some profit
- 8:11taking perhaps going on because it did
- 8:13do so well since the beginning of the year and even last year.
- 8:15But obviously there are some good hedges out there,
- 8:18as you described, that are part of our house for you and CIO.
- 8:21Before I let you go, though,
- 8:21Leo, one of the things that keeps coming up
- 8:23is we're hearing more, of our competitors like Goldman Sachs,
- 8:27for example, raising
- 8:28their potential outlook on a recession today.
- 8:31Now they had it at 45%.
- 8:33And I've seen other reports that other,
- 8:36you know, banks
- 8:37and financial institutions are increasing their recession risk.
- 8:40If the US does deep does go into a recession,
- 8:44what does that do for potentially
- 8:46the impact or what kind of impact does it have on Em?
- 8:49Look.
- 8:49And is it a it's a
- 8:50is it a country by country story or is it a blanket statement?
- 8:54Let me start by saying why is it so hard
- 8:57to predict a recession or lack thereof, in in the United States?
- 9:01Because it really all hinges on tariff outlook,
- 9:04and this can change on a dime, right?
- 9:06One day we get one headline,
- 9:07the next day we get a different headline.
- 9:09So, you know, pounding the table.
- 9:10There's going to be a recession.
- 9:11There's not going to be a recession.
- 9:13It's almost impossible
- 9:14in the context of so much change and uncertainty.
- 9:17Now, if the US were to go into a recession,
- 9:20it's the largest economy in the world.
- 9:23It impose tariffs of a significant size
- 9:27in the second largest economy in the world.
- 9:29So this would be a very severe environment.
- 9:33This calls for,
- 9:37patience.
- 9:39Investing align in alignment with your long term goals.
- 9:43But it's not going to be an easy period. Right.
- 9:45And we have seen you mentioned
- 9:46there's a lot of headline risk out there.
- 9:48And, you know,
- 9:49you might see a headline
- 9:50that looks in favor of putting a pause on the tariffs
- 9:52and the markets all of a sudden shift directions with the wind.
- 9:56But then something else comes out
- 9:57and says, no, that's not a real headline.
- 9:59And then markets go down again.
- 10:01So we really are seeing these immediate reactions to news flow.
- 10:05So I think it's all about
- 10:06staying calm, staying the course, working with your advisor.
- 10:10And as you mentioned, having a well diversified portfolio
- 10:13within Em and then outside of that is really a way
- 10:16to feel
- 10:17like you can go to sleep at night and have a little bit of,
- 10:20you know,
- 10:20you could breathe a little bit
- 10:22knowing that the diversified portfolio you have
- 10:24is going to protect you as much as it can.
- 10:26Anyway. Thanks lot.
- 10:27Always good to see you.
- 10:28Thank you. Found lots happening in the Em space.
- 10:30Clearly I mean,
- 10:31you know, a lot of these countries that we're talking about
- 10:33don't get mentioned very much, but now they're becoming,
- 10:36you know, headlines.
- 10:37So we'll have to keep track of that.
- 10:39And keep in touch with you. Thanks.
- 10:41How good to see you.
- 10:41Thank you.
- 10:42Great.
