- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfl Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. All right, so welcome to Connecting the
- 0:19Dots, the show that helps you make sense of all
- 0:22the tech news that's happening out there. Today's
- 0:23March 19th, and we've got some pretty interesting
- 0:25stuff to talk about. Yeah, definitely seems like
- 0:28a lot's happening. Yeah. So let's just dive right
- 0:31into it. Our goal today is really just to break
- 0:33down what's going on and how it could affect
- 0:35your daily life. First up, we've got to look
- 0:38across the Atlantic over to Europe, where the
- 0:42EU is making some waves. Oh, yeah. Big waves.
- 0:45Yeah. So the EU Commission, they just released
- 0:48some preliminary findings. And well, they're
- 0:51charging Google. Really? With potentially breaking
- 0:54the Digital Markets Act. Wow. OK. Yeah, and this
- 0:57is in both their search engine and their app
- 0:59store too. Yeah. And on top of that, they're
- 1:01ordering Apple to open up their iOS to connected
- 1:05devices. So big moves here. This is really interesting,
- 1:07you know, with this Digital Markets Act. It seems
- 1:09like the EU is really serious about making the
- 1:12digital market. a bit fairer. They're basically
- 1:14telling these huge companies they can't just
- 1:16use their power to push their own stuff and block
- 1:19out the little guys. Right. Yeah, it's all about
- 1:22competition, right? Exactly. So what could this
- 1:25mean for the average person? Well, let's say
- 1:27you're searching for something on Google, right?
- 1:29If these charges actually stick, you might start
- 1:33seeing search results that actually show smaller
- 1:36websites. Oh, wow. Instead of just... the same
- 1:40big names all the time. Imagine you're searching
- 1:42for a niche hobby or something, and you actually
- 1:45find these passionate communities and independent
- 1:47sellers more easily. That's a big deal for those
- 1:51smaller businesses. Absolutely, that's a game
- 1:53changer. And for those of you listening with
- 1:54iPhones or iPads, Apple being told to open up
- 1:58its iOS could mean a much wider range of devices
- 2:01could work with your Apple stuff. Oh, that'd
- 2:03be awesome. Yeah. Imagine smartwatches from other
- 2:07companies, different kinds of fitness trackers,
- 2:08all seamlessly connecting. It would be a more
- 2:11interconnected tech experience for sure. Yeah,
- 2:13totally. All right, let's switch gears a little
- 2:15bit. Let's talk about some new gadgets. Always
- 2:17fun. Google just officially announced their newest
- 2:20smartphone, the Pixel 9A. Now, this has been
- 2:24rumored for a while, but now it's finally official.
- 2:26It's always exciting to see what they come up
- 2:28with. Yeah, so what's really interesting about
- 2:29this Pixel 9a is where Google has decided to
- 2:33position it. Oh, how so? Well, they're pricing
- 2:35it lower than their flagship Pixar 9, around
- 2:38$499. OK, that makes sense. But it still has
- 2:41some pretty impressive features. We're talking
- 2:43a dual camera system for those high quality photos.
- 2:47They've got Google's own Tensor G4 chip and access
- 2:50to all the cool AI features Google is known for.
- 2:53And they're expecting it to start shipping in
- 2:56April 2025. So just in time for spring. Exactly.
- 3:00Yeah. Yeah. So how does this impact you, the
- 3:01listener? Well, if you're thinking about getting
- 3:03a new smartphone, but you don't want to spend
- 3:05a fortune, this Pixel Line A could be a really
- 3:07good option. Yeah. I could see that. Yeah. You
- 3:10know, you could potentially get a phone that
- 3:11takes amazing pictures, has those smart features
- 3:14that make life easier, like filtering out spam
- 3:17calls or translating languages on the fly, you
- 3:20know, all without that super high price tag.
- 3:23It's like you get the premium stuff without paying
- 3:25the premium price. That's always a good thing.
- 3:28All right, now for a story that might be particularly
- 3:30interesting for parents out there, Google is
- 3:33updating their Google Wallet app. And it's going
- 3:36to allow kids with Android phones to make those
- 3:39tap -to -pay purchases in stores. This is rolling
- 3:42out in a few places for now. The US, the UK,
- 3:45Australia, Spain, and Poland. Oh, that's pretty
- 3:47interesting. Yeah, so the important thing here
- 3:49is that Google is emphasizing that parents will
- 3:52have tools to manage how their kids spend money.
- 3:55Oh, OK, that's good. Yeah, it's a big part of
- 3:57this. So it's like a trend of bringing digital
- 3:59finance into the lives of younger people, but
- 4:02with some necessary safeguards in place. It's
- 4:05an interesting thought, how we teach kids about
- 4:07responsibility with money in this increasingly
- 4:10digital age. Yeah, that's a good point. Yeah,
- 4:13so if you've got kids with Android phones in
- 4:15those countries, how could this change things?
- 4:17Well, it could be a really convenient way for
- 4:19them to buy small things, maybe like snacks or
- 4:21a treat after school without having to carry
- 4:23cash. And for you as the parent, you could set
- 4:27spending limits, see where they're spending their
- 4:28money, and even approve purchases. Oh, so it's
- 4:31like giving them a bit of freedom but still having
- 4:33that control. Exactly. Yeah, it's like training
- 4:36wheels for managing money in a digital world.
- 4:39I like that. All right, for our last story today,
- 4:42let's talk about something happening in the world
- 4:43of cryptocurrency. There's been a new development
- 4:46in that legal battle between Ripple and the U
- 4:49.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. You know,
- 4:51the SEC. Oh, yeah. I've been following that one.
- 4:54Yeah. So Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse, he came
- 4:57out and said he thinks the SEC is probably going
- 4:59to drop their appeal in this case. It's been
- 5:01going on since 2020, and it's all about their
- 5:03cryptocurrency XRP. So this could be huge for
- 5:06cryptocurrency. Yeah, absolutely. This whole
- 5:09case has been really closely watched because
- 5:12the outcome could completely change how cryptocurrencies
- 5:15are regulated in the U .S. If the SEC drops their
- 5:18appeal, it could make things much clearer and
- 5:21maybe bring some stability to XRP and the whole
- 5:24regulatory landscape for digital assets. It really
- 5:27makes you think about what the future holds for
- 5:29cryptocurrency and how these legal battles are
- 5:31shaping it. Yeah, for sure. It's a constantly
- 5:33evolving space. So even if you don't... Really
- 5:37follow crypto or trade it yourself This is still
- 5:40relevant because it shows how the world is trying
- 5:42to figure out these new technologies like blockchain
- 5:45and digital currencies the decisions that come
- 5:47from cases like this affect how these technologies
- 5:49are used in things like Digital payments and
- 5:52other financial stuff that you might use every
- 5:54day It's like a reminder that the rules of the
- 5:56digital economy are still being written and these
- 5:58legal battles are a big part of that Yeah, it's
- 6:01important to keep an eye on it. Okay, so that's
- 6:03a wrap on some of the big tech stories for today
- 6:05March 19th We talked about the EU and their efforts
- 6:08to regulate big tech, what it means for your
- 6:11online choices and Apple devices, Google's new
- 6:14Pixel 9a with those great features at a more
- 6:17affordable price, Google Wallet expanding the
- 6:19kids with those parental controls, and the latest
- 6:22on the Ripple versus SEC case, and what it could
- 6:25mean for the future of cryptocurrency. Wow, that
- 6:27was a lot to cover. Yeah, it was a good one.
- 6:29Hopefully we helped connect some dots for you
- 6:31and made a little clearer how all this tech stuff
