- 0:00Hello, and this is the Apocalypse Will Be Podcasted.
- 0:03We are a married couple from Atlanta with boring
- 0:05day jobs. We have been together 12 years, and
- 0:08we usually create a lot of weird performance
- 0:10art to entertain people. But we are trying our
- 0:13hand at having a podcast because we have had
- 0:16an obsession lately, and that obsession is Dungeon
- 0:20Crawler Carl. This is a spoilers podcast, and
- 0:23we will be discussing plot points from all seven
- 0:26Dungeon Crawler Carl books. You should not start
- 0:30this podcast until you have finished book seven.
- 0:33We will not be discussing anything from Patreon
- 0:36or the Pineapple Cabaret. There are spoilers
- 0:39from this point forward. Be warned. So we are
- 0:43officially getting into book seven. We're going
- 0:46to be starting out with Tempest Floor 8 Recap
- 0:49Report. It's Quasar's niece, and she's interviewing
- 0:54him on the basis of it being a school report.
- 0:57Matt's using this as a literary device to do
- 0:59a floor eight recap, basically. And recaps are
- 1:05a trope that they use to help people with bad
- 1:08memories like myself remember what happened the
- 1:11last time without having to reread the entire
- 1:13book. Well, it is a trope, but it's kind of a
- 1:17holdover from before times in some ways when
- 1:20there wasn't any internet. and you couldn't track
- 1:23down all books in a series. So I personally was
- 1:26a poor kid in the 90s, and sometimes you'd be
- 1:29going to thrift stores and yard sales, and you'd
- 1:32find book two of a series that looked really
- 1:35interesting to you, and you'd buy it, and maybe
- 1:38one day you'd find book one, but maybe you wouldn't.
- 1:41So you'd just go ahead and read it, and these
- 1:44recap chapters really helped with filling in
- 1:46the blanks or with some series like The Babysitter's
- 1:49Club. There's 130 Babysitter's Club books. So
- 1:53you're probably not going to track down all 130
- 1:55and read them in order. Who would want to? That's
- 1:58way too many books. Do each their own. I never
- 2:03read them, but I never had to worry about not
- 2:05being able to find a certain book in a series
- 2:07as a kid because I didn't read as a kid. Well,
- 2:11I read everything I could get my hands on, and
- 2:14that meant library books, yard sale books, and
- 2:16that did not mean that you would always end up
- 2:18with a full series at once. So you just have
- 2:21to kind of go with what you got. Fair enough.
- 2:25So this chapter is super fun. There's this great
- 2:30dynamic between Quasar and his niece. They're
- 2:32both extremely vulgar people. So kind of wondering
- 2:36if that runs in the family. Definitely. And he
- 2:40does call her his niece and say that she's in
- 2:42school. But an example I thought of is it states
- 2:46in the Lord of the Rings books that hobbits aren't
- 2:48adults until they're 33. So maybe this person
- 2:52is not the, you know, maybe 10 year old that
- 2:55we're imagining saying all this super vulgar
- 2:57stuff. Right. The ages of some of these alien
- 3:01races can be a little hard to discern. I mean,
- 3:04especially when you're talking about people in
- 3:06the center system, which. quasar and his niece
- 3:08aren't with people in the center system i mean
- 3:10they can be hundreds thousands of years old and
- 3:13you can't really tell just by looking at them
- 3:15one of the things that i think is interesting
- 3:17that they kind of play with is the idea of what
- 3:21makes someone a kid or not a kid and is it just
- 3:25based on age right right i think you're talking
- 3:28about with the kids trying to get involved in
- 3:31the war efforts in book seven yeah and they're
- 3:35like we're older than donut which technically
- 3:39they're not wrong they're not wrong and they're
- 3:42like well big tina the dinosaur is just a kid
- 3:45and you know her mom doesn't want her to be in
- 3:47danger and it gives carl an existential crisis
- 3:51which is for another episode it really does uh
- 3:54so great thing that's right around the beginning
- 3:57of this chapter when quasar finally starts explaining
- 4:02what happened he brings up card system. And this
- 4:06is a great example of lampshade hanging. So what
- 4:10is lampshade hanging? So lampshade hanging is
- 4:13another literary trope and Matt Deniman likes
- 4:16using it a lot. But basically the easiest way
- 4:19for me to explain it is it's calling attention
- 4:22to what the audience is already thinking. Usually
- 4:25Donut is the one who's doing lampshade hanging
- 4:27in this series. Absolutely. It's kind of like
- 4:29a form of breaking the fourth wall. And here
- 4:32in this Floor 8 recap chapter. quasar is talking
- 4:36about the card system and he says some people
- 4:40hate that nerd shit especially when there's a
- 4:41lot of rules but i say whatever right and i i
- 4:45think that that card system was definitely a
- 4:47lot and could be basically on par i think with
- 4:50the train system uh it seems like just a very
- 4:52complicated system i'm sure a lot of people who
- 4:54are into magic gathering or pokemon or yugioh
- 4:57were all over it and i didn't dislike it by any
- 4:59means but it definitely got a little confusing
- 5:02It definitely did create some cool characters
- 5:04and added to the world. I mean, without the whole
- 5:08card game, we wouldn't have Shemaria as a reoccurring
- 5:12character and plot point going into book seven.
- 5:14So other than this chapter serving as a recap
- 5:17of floor eight, what did you get out of it? It
- 5:21was really funny and it did a good job of serving
- 5:25as a recap while also being very good comic relief.
- 5:30And it also reminded us that these characters
- 5:34that Carl are interacting with, you have families
- 5:36and as shitty as he is towards his niece, he
- 5:39does seem to care about her. He does. I mean,
- 5:42he basically trying to teach her an important
- 5:45lesson in a very asshole way. When it gets to
- 5:48the point where she says, you don't help me.
- 5:50I'm going to tell my dad that you said you're
- 5:53my real dad. He's like. Keep saying shit like
- 5:57that, you're going to go far in the world. And
- 5:58he's basically proud of her in that moment. Definitely.
- 6:01And he also seems concerned for her safety. And,
- 6:04you know, she seems concerned for her safety,
- 6:06too, when she's like, you know, uncle, can we
- 6:09possibly be in danger because you're Carl's lawyer?
- 6:12And he's like, yeah, seems kind of possible,
- 6:15kid. And I think it's interesting that he brings
- 6:17up that they live on the far reaches of the galaxy,
- 6:21which is interesting because I wonder how that
- 6:23works with. tunneling zones. Yeah he has to be
- 6:27especially because he is shown as being very
- 6:30disheveled and like he was you know pulled very
- 6:33quickly into a lot of the situations that he's
- 6:36going into with Carl. I mean that's just typical
- 6:38of anything involving Carl you're not going to
- 6:40get a lot of heads up not just as his lawyer
- 6:42but anybody around him. Another thing that I
- 6:44think is really interesting in this chapter is
- 6:48a couple of things that are foreshadowing for
- 6:51pieces that come later in this inevitable ruin.
- 6:53One thing he says is never sign a contract in
- 6:56the Naga system because they like to change the
- 6:58rules on you. And the first time I listened to
- 7:01this, I did not pick up on that at all. It just,
- 7:03you know, went right by me. Yeah, that was definitely
- 7:06something that on my second read through, I was
- 7:09like, oh, is this something he told Carl too?
- 7:14Like, who knows? Yeah, as in book seven, when
- 7:18that happens. And Carl is just like, fuck you.
- 7:22I'm not taking your deal with the remaining Naga
- 7:24in Faction Wars. And I was kind of like, wow,
- 7:27that was pretty messed up of Carl to just make
- 7:30that decision on behalf of everybody in the dungeon
- 7:32and everybody on Earth. But yeah, I wonder if
- 7:35Quasar did tell him that or even if he didn't,
- 7:37I'm still like, oh, well, I'm glad he didn't
- 7:39take that deal then because it seems like that
- 7:41guy maybe wasn't going to be true to his word.
- 7:44And I think the advice that he gives his niece
- 7:48of don't try to be nice is definitely a overarching
- 7:52theme in the book. In what way? In that I think
- 7:56they're always trying to do what's right, not
- 8:00necessarily what makes people feel good in the
- 8:03moment or what makes them feel validated. And
- 8:06I think a lot of the time there's kind of an
- 8:08attitude of we don't have time for your feelings
- 8:11right now. Yeah, I mean, that definitely happens
- 8:13a lot of having to shove your feelings and your
- 8:16emotions down because everything around these
- 8:18characters is just happening so, so fast. As
- 8:23the reader, I remember my first time going through,
- 8:26I was maybe 20 chapters in and I said to Bree,
- 8:29like, does this book have any chill or is it
- 8:33just 120 miles an hour the entire time? Book
- 8:37seven is my favorite book, and I think everyone
- 8:41gets pretty obsessed with it when they're reading
- 8:43it through for the first time. I know I was staying
- 8:45up past my bedtime reading every night. Same.
- 8:48And then I wouldn't be able to fall asleep because
- 8:51my mind was racing with everything that was happening.
- 8:53So another great piece of foreshadowing that
- 8:57happened is when Tempest says, I like Louis.
- 9:00It sure would be sad if something terrible happened
- 9:02to him this next floor. It sure would be terrible
- 9:05if something happened to him. But, I mean, what
- 9:08happens to him isn't the worst. It's just a very
- 9:10stressful series of events. I mean, dying and
- 9:14having to have some of your parts replaced, I
- 9:16think that it's up for debate on if that's the
- 9:20worst or not. It's pretty bad. Yeah, but, like,
- 9:24he lives, you know. I thought Louis was going
- 9:27to die. I mean, honestly, I thought more characters
- 9:30were going to die in Book 7 than did. Um, I thought
- 9:35that too, but I think that a lot of that credit
- 9:39goes to them working together as a team for them
- 9:43having plans and, you know, just for their overall
- 9:46attitude of we're going to get as many people
- 9:49out as possible. There's a couple other points
- 9:51that we want to highlight, which come at the
- 9:54end of this recap chapter. And one of them is
- 9:59Tempest asks what happened with the homeless
- 10:02shelter. And Quasar says, oh, it was just a non
- 10:06-event. Gee, a lot of people sure have said that,
- 10:09huh? Yep, yep. I mean, when Carl gets pulled
- 10:11out of the homeless shelter and he's talking
- 10:12to Orin, Orin's like, yep, everyone was disappointed
- 10:15because it was just a bunch of bullshit. Yeah,
- 10:17people have said that enough times that that
- 10:20doesn't seem to be the case. But that will be
- 10:22our entire next episode. Which is definitely
- 10:26going to be a longer episode. We'll see how long
- 10:28it may even get broken up into two episodes.
- 10:31Another interesting point that comes up is she
- 10:34asks what happened with She -Maria. And he says
- 10:38that nobody knows how that's going to turn out.
- 10:41And we definitely get a lot more info throughout
- 10:43book seven on that. And they end up locking her
- 10:46away inside of Carl. So she's no longer like
- 10:48a danger or threat. But it's interesting because
- 10:52he does still have power to release her. It's
- 10:56like a last resort, right? Yeah, lots of last
- 10:59resort scenarios. They're kind of building up
- 11:01like the doomsday scenario. He's just building
- 11:04this arsenal of cataclysmic level weapons that
- 11:08can unleash untold. destruction and horror. I
- 11:11wonder if he's going to get any more of those.
- 11:13I would assume he is. But I will say that it
- 11:17was a little hard to start with prologues and
- 11:19that we're going to have a little bit more of
- 11:22a set structure with a lot of the episodes that
- 11:26we're talking about once we get out of the prologues
- 11:28and into more straightforward. This is chapter
- 11:30one. Right. The prologue episode where we had
- 11:34to do a lot of research. and a lot of digging
- 11:37between all of the books to be able to accurately
- 11:40go through it in the next episode. One of the
- 11:43last things we want to do today is talk about
- 11:45a couple of our favorite quotes from this chapter.
- 11:47I was going to do some lampshade hanging of my
- 11:50own and say, Carl, you've complained about how
- 11:53much research you had to do for this next episode
- 11:55twice. It'll make you seem whiny. Well, I am
- 11:58whiny and that's something that you're all going
- 12:00to find out. Brie, what was your favorite quote
- 12:02from this chapter? My favorite quote from this
- 12:05chapter. is they can all really die now. It's
- 12:08going to be a shit show, an epic, but sir, you
- 12:11haven't taken a bath shit show. That was fantastic.
- 12:15And then mine comes pretty much right after that.
- 12:19Tempest twisted a pipe and cursed as the whole
- 12:21unit came out. Mother horse fucker penis basket,
- 12:24she exclaimed. Don't worry, kid. The sink doesn't
- 12:26even work anyway. More of an art piece. Yeah,
- 12:29they keep having her fix the sink, which it doesn't
- 12:33seem like it works or... he even uses so this
- 12:38is very bizarre the whole scene part is bizarre
- 12:41but very in line with the rest of the series
- 12:43we talked before we started uh recording about
- 12:47if we were going to have to bleep things for
- 12:49monetization or not and i will admit i still
- 12:52have not done the research on that But I think
- 12:55it will get a little out of control if we have
- 12:57to bleep things because we are trying to give
- 13:00direct quotes whenever possible. And there is
- 13:03a lot of curse words in this. In this chapter,
- 13:06Quasar calls Tempest's teacher old anal beads.
- 13:09Another great example of the profanity in this
- 13:12series. And with that, we have wrapped up episode
- 13:15one, the first official episode of our podcast.
