- 1:00Speaker 1: shog Well, you know I'm just chasing the O. You know,
- 1:02Speaker 1: a body of work should be recognized because I look
- 1:07Speaker 1: at sometimes we were just grinders. You know what I'm saying.
- 1:10Speaker 1: You're an entrepreneur. You know people he's an acting No,
- 1:12Speaker 1: he's an entrepreneur because he's building a business, building a career.
- 1:16Speaker 1: And when in the process of doing that, their peaks
- 1:19Speaker 1: in their valleys and there sometimes when you just you
- 1:22Speaker 1: just cry because you don't know chosen the right path.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Can you talk about some of your journey early on, because, uh,
- 1:29Speaker 1: when I was going through your resume, it was one
- 1:32Speaker 1: thing that stare that in two thousand and six, all
- 1:35Speaker 1: those beautiful credits I've read about it got names associated.
- 1:38Speaker 1: You did an episode of Entourage and it listened to
- 1:41Speaker 1: you as a young thug number one. That's that's that's
- 1:45Speaker 1: a credit. That's a credit. But that was two thousand six.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Let's talk about when did it started turning after two
- 1:54Speaker 1: thousand and six. You know what, I came home as
- 1:58Speaker 1: I did Entourage and it was pretty good. It was
- 2:00Speaker 1: alright at a good time. I'd like to show a lot,
- 2:03Speaker 1: but I said, I don't want to play thugs anymore.
- 2:05Speaker 1: I want to play something my kids canna be very
- 2:07Speaker 1: proud of me, of right, sir. So Um, there there
- 2:10Speaker 1: have been times in my career where I stepped back
- 2:13Speaker 1: when I was like, you know what, let me figure
- 2:17Speaker 1: out exactly what the next phase of my career is
- 2:20Speaker 1: gonna be. If it takes time for me to do
- 2:23Speaker 1: whatever I need to do, um it takes six months
- 2:26Speaker 1: or a year, uh, then I will do it. And
- 2:30Speaker 1: just so I can be seen in a different light.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I didn't after that. I said, I don't want to
- 2:36Speaker 1: just play these nameless people or and it was a
- 2:39Speaker 1: pretty good role, you know, it was just it just
- 2:41Speaker 1: sucked that it was called that. You know what I'm saying, dude,
- 2:45Speaker 1: you don't know if this guy the young thug or whatever,
- 2:47Speaker 1: if he goes home to a wife and kids or
- 2:50Speaker 1: anything like that. But you know, about that time was
- 2:54Speaker 1: the time I just stepped back and I think I'm
- 2:56Speaker 1: gonna changed agencies and managements because I said I had
- 2:59Speaker 1: a bit it for myself that with much mrch much
- 3:02Speaker 1: further than just you know, playing big parts, right, I
- 3:07Speaker 1: got with an amazing manager. I got what I'm managing
- 3:09Speaker 1: wing with right now, frankn Zalez, who saw the fishing
- 3:12Speaker 1: right and he's you know omaro. I see what you're
- 3:15Speaker 1: trying to do, and you know, allow me to guide
- 3:17Speaker 1: you and take you to the next level. And you
- 3:20Speaker 1: know ever since then that we're gonn rocking and rolling. Yeah,
- 3:23Speaker 1: that's why, that's what I wanted to bring that moment up, because,
- 3:26Speaker 1: like I said, there are many moments we have in
- 3:28Speaker 1: your life and so but also you have to make
- 3:31Speaker 1: a decision because people will see you and keep pushing
- 3:35Speaker 1: you down in lane where they think you should be
- 3:37Speaker 1: at well they think you should go, and then you
- 3:40Speaker 1: have to realize that there's an unknown when you push
- 3:43Speaker 1: back that's not me. I don't you know the is
- 3:46Speaker 1: I'm working, but I don't want to work like that.
- 3:49Speaker 1: What fear unknown? Did you? Did you have to introduce
- 3:52Speaker 1: your peer group around you? What support group did you
- 3:55Speaker 1: have or was it just you? Definitely my peer group.
- 4:00Speaker 1: You know, I have like a lot of friends who
- 4:02Speaker 1: are extremely successful. And even in two thousand and six, uh,
- 4:07Speaker 1: the guys who I wrote with, uh, there they were
- 4:09Speaker 1: getting it. They were getting it, and I was like,
- 4:11Speaker 1: we all started out together, and then no reason why
- 4:15Speaker 1: I should be lagging behind. And if we all started
- 4:18Speaker 1: at the same time, and even though I don't measure
- 4:20Speaker 1: my success by anybody else's. But I saw the opportunities
- 4:24Speaker 1: that were out there, and I didn't wanna drop the
- 4:27Speaker 1: ball and get into a rat race and just get
- 4:30Speaker 1: into like what I'm always playing, the same thing, getting pigeonholed.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Even now, as much as I do love playing Hollywood,
- 4:37Speaker 1: I wouldn't go around and play something like Kenneth f
- 4:40Speaker 1: Reed or I will go and play along and Harriet.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I'll do something different that's so different than what I'm playing,
- 4:47Speaker 1: because I don't want anybody to ever pigeonholed me into,
- 4:50Speaker 1: uh you know what they think I should be doing.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I'm an active comes from the theater man. I'm used
- 4:55Speaker 1: to playing Othello or playing y'all go either one in.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I'm used to doing August Wilson. I'm used to doing
- 5:02Speaker 1: Tom Stop Warning, Bird Off Brick and all these different things.
- 5:06Speaker 1: So it's like I didn't want to come into the
- 5:09Speaker 1: film and television game and just Okay, well he's a
- 5:12Speaker 1: big guy, he's dark skinned. Let's go and just make
- 5:15Speaker 1: him thug number. No. No, if I'm gonna be a
- 5:16Speaker 1: thug when the Medo Brown, absolutely there you go that
- 5:19Speaker 1: you initial to kill them at the end of that
- 5:22Speaker 1: they had sequel to three or four. They have several
- 5:24Speaker 1: sequels now all the money. I didn't mention the credit
- 5:28Speaker 1: there old mark that you had, but you're gonna bring
- 5:30Speaker 1: it out anyway. Because I hated you. I hated you.
- 5:33Speaker 1: I hated you and Harriet. I bore everybody hated me, yo, people,
- 5:38Speaker 1: would you know what for sure? I've never felt so
- 5:41Speaker 1: much literally all of my life, like personal like, oh
- 5:45Speaker 1: my god, you're a sellout, like amazing job. People are
- 5:53Speaker 1: writing our heads about me. I'll say, yo, I must
- 5:55Speaker 1: have been really good and you because me and Sound
- 5:59Speaker 1: both did django and it Sound was like, man, you
- 6:04Speaker 1: want up me on this one? Man? Because I think
- 6:09Speaker 1: you saw early uh viewing Government, he said the donna
- 6:12Speaker 1: hate despies you And that's what I said. That's what
- 6:15Speaker 1: I want. Man again, you love me again? Oh my goodness,
- 6:19Speaker 1: I would tell you something if you haven't seen this
- 6:21Speaker 1: the movie uh hollybood when you and increased the relationship
- 6:25Speaker 1: again in the acting scene with and Areta. You know
- 6:28Speaker 1: Genius series with Cynthia who started as was the lead
- 6:32Speaker 1: and Harriet and so that's what the great role is
- 6:35Speaker 1: about because we know you not a in that period
- 6:38Speaker 1: you know you and you go back there and you
- 6:40Speaker 1: accept the role and responsibility. But by the way, ain't
- 6:43Speaker 1: nobody gonna hate nobody more than Samy Yelle and Jango
- 6:47Speaker 1: on changed that that food. I would tell you something.
- 6:52Speaker 1: You know, we were doing the movie when he first
- 6:54Speaker 1: comes down the stairs right right, we're all in the line,
- 6:57Speaker 1: we're watching them, and Sam goes into that character. Everything
- 7:01Speaker 1: inside of me not to laugh because Sam was so
- 7:04Speaker 1: on the nose, never said anything like it. I was like, man,
- 7:08Speaker 1: he is showing up this scenery. He's ball man. I
- 7:12Speaker 1: was like, this is an actor lesson because he was
- 7:14Speaker 1: in the moment, he was in the character. Yeah, that's
- 7:17Speaker 1: he's my favorite actor of all time. That that that
- 7:20Speaker 1: dude right there. He was more white than he was black,
- 7:23Speaker 1: but he was more white. He was more of a
- 7:24Speaker 1: white slader than the slave holders. And they were like,
- 7:27Speaker 1: can you pull up, man, You don't treat them. You
- 7:31Speaker 1: treat them like this, You treat them. He forgot who
- 7:34Speaker 1: he was and that was that. I'm telling you, man,
- 7:38Speaker 1: that's like, uh, when we was shooting out, I was laughing.
- 7:41Speaker 1: I wanted to laugh so hard because he was really
- 7:45Speaker 1: into that character so deep. Yes, but it was so
- 7:47Speaker 1: funny because it was so outrageous but and it was.
- 7:50Speaker 1: But yeah, man, so it's a couple of characters like that,
- 7:53Speaker 1: like I think Mr. And Color Purple is pretty attrocious, sup.
- 7:56Speaker 1: But he has a redemption at the end. But you
- 7:58Speaker 1: know you had no re Yeah no, oh my oh
- 8:01Speaker 1: you ain't get no redemption and Harry you get Mr. Yes, yes,
- 8:11Speaker 1: But we'll be right back with more Money Making Conversations
- 8:14Speaker 1: Masterclass with Rashan McDonald. Now, let's return to Money Making
- 8:20Speaker 1: Conversations Masterclass with Rashan McDonald. That's a beautiful part of you.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Like I said, I'll reading the credits, you know, Selma
- 8:29Speaker 1: Ray Donovan which I loved you and Ray Donovan and
- 8:31Speaker 1: things like that, bones all those bodies of work that
- 8:34Speaker 1: are available to African American talent. Now that we did,
- 8:38Speaker 1: I just I could say, man, probably about eight years ago,
- 8:41Speaker 1: all we had was reality shows with black people acting
- 8:44Speaker 1: in them on scripted shows. When did you start noticing
- 8:48Speaker 1: the opportunity was opening for better scripted series like you
- 8:52Speaker 1: on right now in Queen's Sugar, which is helmed by
- 8:55Speaker 1: Ava douven At, which is a you know, award winning
- 8:58Speaker 1: in double A c P uh series, when you start
- 9:01Speaker 1: seeing roles like they come your way, you went, wow,
- 9:05Speaker 1: we started to turn the corner for African American talent.
- 9:08Speaker 1: It was a year that It was a year that,
- 9:10Speaker 1: uh that that that that Jesus Lord, it was a
- 9:13Speaker 1: year that that that we came out. Ye Queen Sugar
- 9:16Speaker 1: came out, because Queen Sugar came out. Atlanta came out
- 9:19Speaker 1: the same year Nothing Insecure Mighty came out the year before.
- 9:22Speaker 1: So I saw the turn, and then the next year
- 9:25Speaker 1: the shot came out. I said, Okay, yeah, that's what
- 9:28Speaker 1: we look like. This is exactly what we look like
- 9:31Speaker 1: in my regular life. It's not everybody's not drug there
- 9:34Speaker 1: was everybody's our basketball players. Everybody's not reality stars, you know, no, Like,
- 9:39Speaker 1: these are regular people living regular lives. That's how ninety
- 9:44Speaker 1: nine percent of people who are I know, not the
- 9:46Speaker 1: people who are like zillionaires, but the people even the
- 9:49Speaker 1: people who are famous actors or whatever. Man, we all
- 9:52Speaker 1: live the same way that we live on the Shy
- 9:55Speaker 1: on Queens Sugar, on Atlanta or Insecure. It's the same thing,
- 10:00Speaker 1: and we finally get to receive the reflection. It was
- 10:02Speaker 1: those two years, man, it was two thousand fifteen in
- 10:05Speaker 1: two thousand sixteen, and I said, it wasn't the renaissance
- 10:09Speaker 1: of black um television, because renaissance means rebirth. It was
- 10:12Speaker 1: the birth black television. It's not just sitcoms. It's not
- 10:16Speaker 1: just us being silly or just and trust me, by
- 10:19Speaker 1: my favorite shows in the world, but the rest of
- 10:21Speaker 1: my my whole life have been safer. The Sun and
- 10:23Speaker 1: the Jeffersons. Absolutely, it's not all just sit comes. You know,
- 10:26Speaker 1: I'm funny, but I ain't that funny. I'm gonna be
- 10:29Speaker 1: able to be on nothing as good as like Red Fox,
- 10:32Speaker 1: uh uh Seanan Helmsley, you know. But I know that
- 10:34Speaker 1: I can act, and I know that I could bring
- 10:36Speaker 1: what I can bring to uh, you know, to drama
- 10:39Speaker 1: or even to to some drama. So it was those
- 10:42Speaker 1: It's fifth two thousand, two thousand sixteen, and I saw
- 10:45Speaker 1: the tire turn and I saw other shows coming up
- 10:48Speaker 1: behind it. It was great shows, even like a show
- 10:50Speaker 1: like This is Us, which is not particularly a black show.
- 10:53Speaker 1: But when you have Sterling and you have Susan you know,
- 10:55Speaker 1: who leaves of the show, then there you go, boom
- 10:58Speaker 1: this you see a black family week, you know. So um, yeah,
- 11:01Speaker 1: that's what it was, man um. It was that year
- 11:04Speaker 1: I think This is Us and QUENU came out the
- 11:06Speaker 1: same time, absolutely know, you know, me starring and Susan
- 11:09Speaker 1: a n each other for over twenty years, and and
- 11:11Speaker 1: we were all just very excited, like this is a
- 11:14Speaker 1: really great opportunity that we really get a chance to
- 11:15Speaker 1: show our chops and what we can do and sure
- 11:18Speaker 1: that we can you know, bring you can have a
- 11:20Speaker 1: fan base. So that those were the years. That's when
- 11:23Speaker 1: I saw the tire turn and it's never looked back. Man.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Now you look, you know, you look at all the
- 11:28Speaker 1: so many it's a plethora shows right now that that
- 11:31Speaker 1: that showed the black life. You look at ABD Elementary.
- 11:34Speaker 1: This is not particularly a black show, but it is
- 11:36Speaker 1: a black show absolutely created by the black woman. But
- 11:39Speaker 1: it's getting all the love, it's getting all the praise,
- 11:42Speaker 1: you know, even before then, I think two thousand fourteen
- 11:44Speaker 1: and fifteen when Blackish came out and I was like,
- 11:47Speaker 1: you know, this looks like my sam, you know what
- 11:48Speaker 1: I'm saying. So it was that happen. Yeah, yeah, I
- 11:52Speaker 1: appreciate that because of the fact that you're not talking
- 11:54Speaker 1: to oh my door, say if his face looks for
- 11:56Speaker 1: you know, it's four sounds familiar salf when they see
- 11:59Speaker 1: us chain gonna change where we just laughed about what
- 12:02Speaker 1: starts sammyel Jackson and Jamie foxx Ray Donovan bones Genius
- 12:07Speaker 1: sent here. You know she started that movie as well
- 12:10Speaker 1: as Harriet, which we just talked about. The Retha Franklin
- 12:13Speaker 1: what you haven't seen that he plays Jane Cleveland role
- 12:16Speaker 1: in the in the Genius. Aretha Frankel was just on
- 12:19Speaker 1: that geo. By the way, now you you in this,
- 12:23Speaker 1: I think I call this a peach yourself serious, Queen Sugar,
- 12:26Speaker 1: because when you get this opportunity, you know, because we
- 12:29Speaker 1: all know that how these checks come in Hollywood, you
- 12:32Speaker 1: you work and then you don't know when you're gonna
- 12:34Speaker 1: work again. When you finally get a series, you can
- 12:37Speaker 1: kind of relax, but you only relax to see if
- 12:39Speaker 1: they're gonna renew it. Then you can like, oh, okay,
- 12:42Speaker 1: they renewed it. Tell us about your role in Queens
- 12:45Speaker 1: Sugar and the difference that makes in your life, both
- 12:49Speaker 1: personally and what you're trying to do when you're trying
- 12:51Speaker 1: to change the narrative on how blacks have changed or
- 12:54Speaker 1: portrayed in television. Do you know it's a beautiful thing. Man.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I remember the day that I was to move into
- 13:00Speaker 1: Bahamas and it was Uh calls me, she says, oh,
- 13:03Speaker 1: my mother do a show called Queen Sugars me. It's
- 13:08Speaker 1: gonna be on the own network. And you know, I
- 13:10Speaker 1: just got fairs working with Oprah on something with Ava
- 13:13Speaker 1: And she said, she said, I want you to read
- 13:16Speaker 1: the script and you tell what you think about it.
- 13:17Speaker 1: I read the script, she said, read it. I wrot
- 13:19Speaker 1: the Hollywood. I read it. I was like, oh, this
- 13:21Speaker 1: is beautiful. I said, you want to play this role?
- 13:24Speaker 1: And I just come down. This is me coming out
- 13:25Speaker 1: for Ray Donovan, right, like you know, I Cookie Brown
- 13:30Speaker 1: playing one of the coldest dudes on television. Yeah, she
- 13:34Speaker 1: was like, yeah, oh I want you to play this role.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Was a matter of fact, when when Ray Donovan was out,
- 13:38Speaker 1: many went out. Uh when out, She was like, I
- 13:40Speaker 1: liked right down and said you're great. After she said,
- 13:42Speaker 1: but I see something else for you. She told me that,
- 13:45Speaker 1: and I see something else. I don't want you to
- 13:47Speaker 1: always have to play you know this, that and the other.
- 13:49Speaker 1: I said, Okay, I feel you. I feel you. So
- 13:51Speaker 1: maybe three or four months later, she hits me with
- 13:53Speaker 1: that script and I Will said, why this is amazing,
- 13:57Speaker 1: this is I love it. So when I thought this
- 13:58Speaker 1: and Ford said no, no, no, no, no, no on
- 14:01Speaker 1: this sod wha she said, she said, I'm producing the
- 14:05Speaker 1: way over we will, I'm producing Oprah. We love you
- 14:08Speaker 1: so well, call your lawyers and do the deal. And
- 14:11Speaker 1: it's already a put series, which means it's already picked
- 14:15Speaker 1: up for thirteen episodes. So I went from like job,
- 14:18Speaker 1: the job, to like, wait, thirteen episode whoa? As a
- 14:25Speaker 1: series regularly, my whole life changed in that conversation, you know,
- 14:30Speaker 1: and it truly did. And and that's just the monetary thing.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Playing Hollywood, playing Holly's worth day, so name the Hollywood.
- 14:39Speaker 1: It's changed my life so much, has changed my life
- 14:43Speaker 1: as a man because I'm saying these words to this
- 14:46Speaker 1: woman every day, and I'm saying. At first, I was like, man,
- 14:50Speaker 1: it's courting. Nobody thinks like this. Somebody talks like this,
- 14:52Speaker 1: I'll play it. But then then the character starts to
- 14:55Speaker 1: seep inside of me, and I found myself, uh, being
- 15:01Speaker 1: more like Hollywood on a daily basis because I was like,
- 15:05Speaker 1: this is how a man to treat this woman. This
- 15:08Speaker 1: is how a man should be in the community. This
- 15:10Speaker 1: is how a mansion treat his whole family. So I
- 15:13Speaker 1: feel like playing that role has changed me that much
- 15:16Speaker 1: and a change of perception on the type of actor
- 15:18Speaker 1: I am I see now, man, Like it's crazy like
- 15:21Speaker 1: the roles that I get now. You know, we're talking
- 15:23Speaker 1: about going from playing Thug number one to playing the
- 15:27Speaker 1: Sheriff and Halloween franchise, which is you know, also came
- 15:33Speaker 1: from my buddies who did that. He's bound a down
- 15:35Speaker 1: series I used to be on. But like a lot
- 15:39Speaker 1: of the stuff I get now, man, a lot most
- 15:41Speaker 1: of the things that I get now are these upstanding,
- 15:45Speaker 1: you know, really great men. And I really appreciate that
- 15:49Speaker 1: because and I know that it came from Queen Sugar.
- 15:51Speaker 1: I know that. But I finished on a movie called
- 15:54Speaker 1: water Boys and playing with the young the young fellow
- 15:58Speaker 1: who's on Daily makes man um and I played his mentor.
- 16:02Speaker 1: You know, it's a lot of streets stuff involved in it,
- 16:04Speaker 1: but I played his mentor who owns the who owns
- 16:07Speaker 1: the I T Company and own such a company shop
- 16:11Speaker 1: and all of this type of stuff. And I hired him.
- 16:13Speaker 1: But I'm like, the voice of reason throughout the movie.
- 16:16Speaker 1: And it's like, these are the roles that weren't really
- 16:19Speaker 1: offered to me before, a Queen Sugar. So even like
- 16:22Speaker 1: even with that land, it's just such a blessing. And
- 16:25Speaker 1: even the stuff I get because I don't have audition
- 16:28Speaker 1: a lot anymore, I just need these offers for these
- 16:30Speaker 1: amazing roles. Now, congratulations, it all comes from you know,
- 16:34Speaker 1: seven eight years ago when when when Abel calls me
- 16:38Speaker 1: in two thousand and fifteen, you know, Um asked me
- 16:42Speaker 1: to read this script. So yeah, we'll be right back
- 16:45Speaker 1: with more money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald. Now,
