- 0:00Speaker 1: My next guest is one of those people. Um I
- 0:02Speaker 1: know because I met her a long time ago, and
- 0:05Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about that. She's a celebrity interior designer
- 0:08Speaker 1: Arthur and known trend setter with twenty years of experience.
- 0:12Speaker 1: She's accomplished a vast range of interior projects, launched an
- 0:16Speaker 1: online design school called design Mecca E d U, and
- 0:20Speaker 1: she has designed interiors for celebrities such as Gabrielle Union,
- 0:24Speaker 1: good friend of mine, Tica Campbell, very good friend of mine,
- 0:26Speaker 1: tire Banks. I know her will. She is also a
- 0:29Speaker 1: lifestyle and design expert for several TV networks such as HDTV,
- 0:34Speaker 1: E Oxygen on Network and starting in her own makeover
- 0:38Speaker 1: show called Unboxed with Nikki Chew on the Aspired Network.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Please welcome to Money Making Conversations. Nikki Chew. Hello, Hello,
- 0:49Speaker 1: this is a full circle moment. I have to tell
- 0:52Speaker 1: you thank you because right before that bio you just
- 0:56Speaker 1: read met ye, yes, just that twenty years that twenty years, Yes,
- 1:05Speaker 1: this is this actually means a lot to me to
- 1:09Speaker 1: sit here, you know, listening to the bio you just
- 1:12Speaker 1: read about me, and you really knowing me in the
- 1:15Speaker 1: very beginning, Yes, you know let's let's let's tell everybody
- 1:18Speaker 1: that I was the executive booster show for the WB
- 1:21Speaker 1: I created co created with Steve Harvey. Uh. It was
- 1:24Speaker 1: called Mobile Home Disasters, where we will go in and
- 1:27Speaker 1: to mobile homes and make over, make them over. And
- 1:30Speaker 1: she was one of the designers that was higher. I mean,
- 1:34Speaker 1: you know, first of all, just uh, it's it's a
- 1:38Speaker 1: it's a it's a project, a pilot, So you don't
- 1:40Speaker 1: have ideas, so you have to bring in people who
- 1:42Speaker 1: are creative. And Renegade eighty three Epilog was the name
- 1:45Speaker 1: of the production company. Now does negd and afraid? If
- 1:50Speaker 1: he was negative afraid, that's renegade three. Yeah, and uh
- 1:53Speaker 1: and so and she was one thing I loved about her.
- 1:56Speaker 1: She had an opinion and she held to it. Yes,
- 2:00Speaker 1: she haven't changed. And you know, and I'm one of
- 2:03Speaker 1: those people who are okay, really really really I don't
- 2:07Speaker 1: even know her, and and and and and and that
- 2:10Speaker 1: was a beauty of that. And then so when I
- 2:12Speaker 1: look at the success that you had coming from Mobile
- 2:15Speaker 1: Home Disaster, air Bill Vall was to host the good
- 2:20Speaker 1: ratings on the w B Good Time and then he
- 2:22Speaker 1: went on to think to see the Country Music Television
- 2:26Speaker 1: Network afterwards. But a great thing about it was that
- 2:29Speaker 1: I met you. You you had a good concept of
- 2:32Speaker 1: what you wanted to do. Tell us what was running
- 2:34Speaker 1: into your mind at that stage before we started moving
- 2:37Speaker 1: forward to what you've accomplished over the years. Well, first
- 2:40Speaker 1: of all, anybody tells you that you're gonna make over
- 2:43Speaker 1: mobile homes, you know, designers, that is on the list
- 2:48Speaker 1: of what you'd love to do, I'm not sure where
- 2:51Speaker 1: you would find that. So there was a lot of
- 2:55Speaker 1: things that ran through my head as it related to that.
- 2:58Speaker 1: But as a designer, the one thing that I absolutely
- 3:01Speaker 1: love is a challenge, and especially when it comes to
- 3:04Speaker 1: a design challenge. So that was actually a really exciting
- 3:09Speaker 1: time because, first of all, I was just getting into
- 3:11Speaker 1: television and and and I was challenged to design a
- 3:16Speaker 1: makeover for these mobile homes and host with a comedian.
- 3:20Speaker 1: So the concept was really original, it was fresh, it
- 3:24Speaker 1: was new, it was totally different than what you would
- 3:26Speaker 1: typically see on h G TV or any of those channels.
- 3:29Speaker 1: So you know, I was with it and I really
- 3:32Speaker 1: enjoyed it. It was a lot of work, you know,
- 3:36Speaker 1: and nobody really realizes when you watch these television shows
- 3:40Speaker 1: what happens, what you see before your eyes, and the
- 3:43Speaker 1: five days you have to to get it done. I mean,
- 3:46Speaker 1: you're ups, really up trying to make this happen for
- 3:52Speaker 1: the TV world versus reality of what really transpires in
- 3:56Speaker 1: the design world. And that's where the olenges that people say,
- 4:01Speaker 1: I want to be on TV, I want to be
- 4:02Speaker 1: a designer. But what you don't know is that you're
- 4:05Speaker 1: about to be a week for the next three days.
- 4:07Speaker 1: I forgot about that part because we were it was
- 4:10Speaker 1: like it was like four o'clock in the morning, and
- 4:13Speaker 1: we went wide of wait because you have to tile down,
- 4:15Speaker 1: walls down because we were making over mobile homes and
- 4:19Speaker 1: these mobile homes were not good. Look at mobile homes, no,
- 4:24Speaker 1: And we had to go in there and knock out
- 4:25Speaker 1: walls and basically retail stuff. And then I just had
- 4:29Speaker 1: to do the exterior. So we had to do a
- 4:31Speaker 1: little landscaping so when they came up, it looked pretty
- 4:34Speaker 1: and then they walked in its Oh my god. Then
- 4:37Speaker 1: you have to show the before pictures after pictures called
- 4:39Speaker 1: mobile home disaster, and Uh, I went my way and
- 4:43Speaker 1: became famous, you know, and she went her way and
- 4:46Speaker 1: uh became famous and uh, working with celebrities like Gabrielle
- 4:51Speaker 1: Union and t J Campbell, tire but all great people
- 4:53Speaker 1: and other celebrities, just three of them just naming the
- 4:56Speaker 1: want I got a lot. I don't have that much
- 4:57Speaker 1: time on my show. Another way to I want to
- 5:00Speaker 1: talk about first is the the online design school called
- 5:03Speaker 1: Design Neca Etu that really excites me. I have a daughter,
- 5:07Speaker 1: she's a she's in UM, she's she's doing gaming design,
- 5:11Speaker 1: doing designs right now in designs classes and all these
- 5:14Speaker 1: different classes. So when I this is something I would
- 5:16Speaker 1: love for her just to do because I think it's
- 5:19Speaker 1: really cool. So tell us what exactly is going on
- 5:21Speaker 1: with Design Mecca Etiu. Design Meca etiu UM stemmed from
- 5:27Speaker 1: an amazing amount of emails, d M, s U, Facebook
- 5:33Speaker 1: messages from women all ages, from young girls to women
- 5:38Speaker 1: in their sixties that would tell me their story that
- 5:42Speaker 1: they absolutely loved design. It was something they wanted to do,
- 5:46Speaker 1: they were scared to get into it. Were young girls
- 5:49Speaker 1: who had gone to college and they graduated and they
- 5:51Speaker 1: were trying to get into the design world and they
- 5:53Speaker 1: just haven't had any success. And majority of these women
- 5:57Speaker 1: were asking me to mentor them, to teach them everything
- 6:01Speaker 1: that I knew. How did I get to where I was?
- 6:04Speaker 1: How did I get ten licensing deals in home to court?
- 6:08Speaker 1: How did I get on a TV show? How did I?
- 6:10Speaker 1: And and I just couldn't possibly reach everybody? And Design
- 6:16Speaker 1: Mecca came from that. I need to put together a
- 6:21Speaker 1: twelve module course in curriculum that really teaches people things
- 6:28Speaker 1: that you don't learn at school. You know, you don't
- 6:32Speaker 1: have to take that traditional four year course at school
- 6:36Speaker 1: and pay all those tuition fees if you have a talent.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I didn't go to school to be an interior designer.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I went to school to be a graphic designer. Yes,
- 6:46Speaker 1: every single day I use my graphic design abilities. I'm
- 6:50Speaker 1: not saying don't go to school. But Design Mecca ETU
- 6:53Speaker 1: is that additional schooling that you need to get, that
- 6:57Speaker 1: little extra thing to push you a little further in
- 7:01Speaker 1: the I didn't know that. Oh now I'm learning from
- 7:06Speaker 1: experts in the field that I want to be in,
- 7:09Speaker 1: and the experts are gonna tell me those little nuances
- 7:12Speaker 1: that the professors didn't teach because they're teaching you the groundwork. Right. So,
- 7:17Speaker 1: how do you run the business, how do you engage
- 7:20Speaker 1: with clients. What happens when you have a difficult client?
- 7:22Speaker 1: How do you discern between a client's personality type and
- 7:26Speaker 1: how you're gonna sell to them or pitch to them.
- 7:29Speaker 1: What happens if I have some ordering missups? How do
- 7:32Speaker 1: I brand myself as a designer in today's society. All
- 7:36Speaker 1: of these things that you need to learn to develop
- 7:39Speaker 1: and create an interior design brand is what you will
- 7:43Speaker 1: learn with design Mecha et You. And the bigger question
- 7:47Speaker 1: for a lot of designers is how do I now
- 7:49Speaker 1: have my own homeline? Did you know that you could
- 7:53Speaker 1: get licensing deals or did you know you could started
- 7:56Speaker 1: on your own? You know a lot of people just
- 7:59Speaker 1: don't even know where to begin. So that's what we're teaching.
- 8:04Speaker 1: This is great to hear because my daughter, you know,
- 8:06Speaker 1: she took a swing class and she came on with
- 8:09Speaker 1: this beautiful bag and she just put it on the sofa. Win.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Uh you made this instance. I go, Okay, you know
- 8:18Speaker 1: we can do something with this. And because people are
- 8:22Speaker 1: talented out there, but they have no direction, that's how
- 8:24Speaker 1: I wanted to start with that first. Because this is
- 8:27Speaker 1: about entrepreneurship, is about money making conversations how you can
- 8:31Speaker 1: take your dreams and turn it into reality. And that's
- 8:34Speaker 1: what you can do with your own line designs. It
- 8:36Speaker 1: is exactly and quite honestly her son. A lot of
- 8:39Speaker 1: women have a talent in interior design. It is majority
- 8:43Speaker 1: of women's passion. They love to make a house at home,
- 8:47Speaker 1: and a lot of women feel like I can actually
- 8:50Speaker 1: do this and this is something, but I have no
- 8:53Speaker 1: idea how to do it, and so design mecha EATI
- 8:56Speaker 1: you teaches you the business of interior design are all
- 9:00Speaker 1: fundamentals and there are creative um moments within the course curriculum,
- 9:05Speaker 1: but a lot of it is how do I turn
- 9:09Speaker 1: my talent into a successful business And a lot of
- 9:12Speaker 1: people who are artists don't have that tool and that's
- 9:16Speaker 1: why they suffer in the business area. I remember, I
- 9:19Speaker 1: remember when I was because we had to go out
- 9:21Speaker 1: shopping a mobile home and disaster and I was in
- 9:24Speaker 1: the store shopping with her and she I'm just I
- 9:26Speaker 1: gotta say, she had an opinion, Okay, I feel it
- 9:29Speaker 1: should look like this, Rashan. I had no idea, so
- 9:33Speaker 1: I couldn't disagree with her. But first of all, so
- 9:36Speaker 1: if I could debate her, you know, I will debate
- 9:38Speaker 1: her but so I look at that and it tells
- 9:41Speaker 1: me that because you had a solid point of view,
- 9:44Speaker 1: and because you because you're willing to take risk and
- 9:47Speaker 1: you're willing to be able to accept the responsibility when
- 9:49Speaker 1: somebody asked you in words, what should just look like
- 9:53Speaker 1: dealing with celebrity? Because we really don't know, but we
- 9:56Speaker 1: we have an idea what we don't I know what
- 9:58Speaker 1: I don't want though, I can tell you that. But
- 10:00Speaker 1: to get me there, that quality when you when you're
- 10:03Speaker 1: working with celebrities really really comes into ploy as a necessary,
- 10:08Speaker 1: necessary tool to have correct um. You know what, it's
- 10:12Speaker 1: not just celebrities. At being a designer, UM people look
- 10:16Speaker 1: to you that you know what you're doing and whatever
- 10:20Speaker 1: you you say they want to follow. However, there are
- 10:23Speaker 1: people that want to challenge you, but they're only challenging
- 10:26Speaker 1: you to see if you know what you're talking about.
- 10:30Speaker 1: So having a solid point of view, being committed to
- 10:34Speaker 1: your point of view and not wavering is really a
- 10:36Speaker 1: skill set that you need, not only as a business
- 10:39Speaker 1: person to become a leader, but as a designer and
- 10:43Speaker 1: to walk into a household ask somebody to pay you
- 10:47Speaker 1: three hundred thousand dollars. You cannot look like you are
- 10:51Speaker 1: wavering any Let me think, Let me let me think.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I could I have a drake while I think about this.
- 10:59Speaker 1: I'm on the phone with to Ky True. She's an
- 11:01Speaker 1: amazing We went down memory lane a little bit to
- 11:04Speaker 1: talk about how we first met and how she really
- 11:07Speaker 1: made an impact on me and now she's making an
- 11:09Speaker 1: impact on the world. We come back. We wanna talk
- 11:11Speaker 1: about a TV show, the Nikkich Homeline, which is available
- 11:14Speaker 1: at bad Bathroom. We're all wayfair, overstopped, and many other things.
- 11:17Speaker 1: But more importantly, she's a special person who's making a
- 11:19Speaker 1: career out of her dreams. Hi, this is ru Sean
- 11:23Speaker 1: McDonald and you're listening to money making conversation. Is my show?
- 11:26Speaker 1: My show means that I can get to talk to
- 11:28Speaker 1: the people that I want to talk to me and
- 11:31Speaker 1: when they talk, they give advice that will help you
- 11:33Speaker 1: to be successful in your dreams, in your aspirations and
- 11:36Speaker 1: your desires to lead a different life. On the phone,
- 11:40Speaker 1: is Nikki chu Um. She's amazing. She has a new
- 11:43Speaker 1: show on the Aspired network called Unboxed that you create
- 11:46Speaker 1: the show tell us about Unboxed. Yes, Unboxed is my baby.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I created an EP on the show. It is a
- 11:55Speaker 1: show where I took risks and talking talk about you know,
- 12:00Speaker 1: taking risks and sacrificing and not sleeping and missing out
- 12:05Speaker 1: on special moments. You know, to follow your dreams and
- 12:09Speaker 1: your passion comes a lot of missing out on things
- 12:15Speaker 1: and really sacrificing, UM, your time, your energy, your sleep,
- 12:21Speaker 1: all for the bigger goal. And that goal has to
- 12:25Speaker 1: be what you hold in your hand daily. That goal
- 12:29Speaker 1: is your motivation when you wake up in the morning,
- 12:31Speaker 1: when you go to sleep at night. You have to
- 12:34Speaker 1: hold that goal like a little diamond in your hand.
- 12:38Speaker 1: And that is what has got me through two seasons
- 12:41Speaker 1: of Unboxed on season two and and I am proud
- 12:46Speaker 1: to say that every season and now the second season,
- 12:49Speaker 1: it gets better and better. Uh. This season, I have
- 12:52Speaker 1: celebrity Friends on, which is a little tweak that I
- 12:55Speaker 1: made in in UM the show. I thought it would
- 12:58Speaker 1: be kind of interesting to see your favorite celebrities is
- 13:01Speaker 1: vulnerable in their own homes behind the scenes. UM and
- 13:06Speaker 1: and you know, I kicked them out and and they
- 13:08Speaker 1: come back and they're revealed. And let me tell you,
- 13:11Speaker 1: every single person I reveal a home to cries because
- 13:15Speaker 1: interiors is an emotional connection and and seeing when somebody's
- 13:21Speaker 1: space is transformed to truly fit who they are, you
- 13:24Speaker 1: would be surprised to see how motivated they are, how
- 13:28Speaker 1: encouraged they are, how their life turns around by way
- 13:32Speaker 1: of just changing an interior space. And that is the
- 13:36Speaker 1: power of what being a designer is all about. That's
- 13:39Speaker 1: what I look forward to every single day when I
- 13:42Speaker 1: reveal a space, whether it's a celebrity or a regular
- 13:45Speaker 1: person about it. As you start talking about the design
- 13:51Speaker 1: part of it, your voice gets more and more excited,
- 13:54Speaker 1: which means as a passion tied to it. Now when
- 13:56Speaker 1: you say that is it a full hall design of room,
- 14:01Speaker 1: it's one space I couldn't possibly do an interior house.
- 14:06Speaker 1: I have three days on my show. I roll up
- 14:08Speaker 1: with two boxes and those two boxes have the most
- 14:12Speaker 1: random objects in them, but they are two completely different
- 14:16Speaker 1: design directions that I could take with this. Inside the
- 14:19Speaker 1: box when I revealed it has anything from a sponge
- 14:23Speaker 1: to a jar of sand to a jar of beads
- 14:26Speaker 1: you know, you know, nail polish, And the homeowner looks
- 14:28Speaker 1: at and says, what the heck is this? How does
- 14:31Speaker 1: this turn into design? But the audience sees me putting
- 14:35Speaker 1: all of these elements into the box, and I'm describing
- 14:38Speaker 1: what this trend is. And once the homeowner picks a box,
- 14:41Speaker 1: I kicked them out of their house. I take over
- 14:45Speaker 1: and I recreate their space based on that trend. And
- 14:49Speaker 1: then when I reveal it to them, you know, I
- 14:51Speaker 1: show them how that box shows up into their house.
- 14:54Speaker 1: So they start to see the color palette or the
- 14:56Speaker 1: textures or you know, the things that were in that
- 14:58Speaker 1: box that they choose. They start to see those elements
- 15:01Speaker 1: in the space. Now, when you have a show like that,
- 15:04Speaker 1: it allows you to promote your brand and allows you
- 15:06Speaker 1: to grow through social media, which lends itself to your brand.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Nikki Chew Home which is available at Bad Bathroom on Wayfair, Overstock,
- 15:16Speaker 1: Heydee Bloomingdale's colds a c penny. Come on that that's
- 15:22Speaker 1: a brand because you didn't just say one stage. You know,
- 15:25Speaker 1: you know you do one store. You know that means
- 15:26Speaker 1: they're hooking you up. They're just giving your shell space.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Now she went to bed and bathroom, okay, right there,
- 15:32Speaker 1: right there, I was there yesterday. Okay. And then you
- 15:35Speaker 1: go to Wayfair and then you go to over Stock
- 15:38Speaker 1: that's online Okay, so it means that if that's worldwide,
- 15:41Speaker 1: that's worldwide, you know what I'm saying. And so Bloomingdale,
- 15:44Speaker 1: that means just sophisticated. You know, that's a little bit above.
- 15:47Speaker 1: You know, cold you forgot Target when when right there
- 15:52Speaker 1: I heard you know, somebody was so funny she said
- 15:53Speaker 1: talk at three times when I was talking about excuse me,
- 15:55Speaker 1: excuse me, excuse me, Nik you said hey, Target, please please.
- 16:04Speaker 1: I heard you say it one time, but you didn't
- 16:06Speaker 1: say Target. Now here's the fun part about here's the
- 16:09Speaker 1: fine part about. Yeah, okay, I've had c ds, I've
- 16:13Speaker 1: had books. Going in and seeing your product, tell me
- 16:17Speaker 1: about that. You know, walking into a store and seeing
- 16:22Speaker 1: the product is really it's encouraging and being a designer,
- 16:29Speaker 1: there's a really interesting thing that you always want to
- 16:32Speaker 1: do better than the last time. So there's a thing
- 16:36Speaker 1: about me that walks into the store, sees the product
- 16:39Speaker 1: and says, yeah, but my new line coming out is
- 16:45Speaker 1: so wait till you guys see the new line. I'm
- 16:47Speaker 1: already onto the next. And but the one thing that's
- 16:52Speaker 1: actually really exciting about is going into someone's home and
- 16:58Speaker 1: seeing how they used my product. I was the other
- 17:02Speaker 1: day I was in Atlanta and uh, I went to
- 17:05Speaker 1: the Lows Hotel and all my pillows were in the lobby,
- 17:09Speaker 1: on every single realion chair, every single one of them.
- 17:13Speaker 1: And that to me was like Wow, a designer who
- 17:18Speaker 1: got hired to do the Lows lobby picked my products
- 17:22Speaker 1: to go into this space. And that's where it's really rewarding.
- 17:26Speaker 1: I see my stuff in commercials. I walk into people's homes,
- 17:30Speaker 1: I go, that's mine. Make a really I go, yeah,
- 17:34Speaker 1: turn it over as my name on it, you know.
- 17:36Speaker 1: So that's when it's it's really fun. I'm gonna you
- 17:39Speaker 1: So that's powerful. I Um, I gotta, I gotta take
- 17:43Speaker 1: a moment back just just just walking into Lows. You know,
- 17:46Speaker 1: this is a prominent hotel chain, you know, and not
- 17:50Speaker 1: saying there are other hotels there below that, but this
- 17:52Speaker 1: we're talking about Lows and we're talking about your pillows,
- 17:55Speaker 1: and we're talking about people sitting on the hugging on
- 17:57Speaker 1: them rest and they were said, they back on them
- 17:59Speaker 1: and they're yours. That to me, when I when let's
- 18:02Speaker 1: talk about that, let's tell everybody what we're talking about.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Her brain is Nikki You Home is a modern yet
- 18:07Speaker 1: global appeal The collection features decorative accessories were all art
- 18:11Speaker 1: home decre and accent front okay cool, okay cool? And
- 18:16Speaker 1: Betty you said betting okay cool. See they let me
- 18:18Speaker 1: tell you something. They leave on so many key moments
- 18:21Speaker 1: in your our conversations. The betting is not on here.
- 18:23Speaker 1: No one was target So I might have a conversation
- 18:26Speaker 1: with either my people. Are you have a conversation with
- 18:27Speaker 1: your people? My people sit next to me. It's just
- 18:29Speaker 1: one person. So so let's talk about this. What exactly
- 18:36Speaker 1: when you say wall art, what exactly is wat art
- 18:39Speaker 1: under the Nikki Chu home brand. Well, I'm a painter,
- 18:43Speaker 1: so I grew up painting and and and always drawing,
- 18:47Speaker 1: and so heard of my collection. You can buy my paintings.
- 18:52Speaker 1: So they I paint something and then they mass produce
