- 0:15Hello Travelers and Monster Catchers Abound.
- 0:17I'm Stelliferous and this is the Monster Catcher's
- 0:19Journal Podcast. Today's episode is about Jarabeek.
- 0:24The inato Desert stretched out before me an endless
- 0:27sea of golden sand and jagged red cliffs. The
- 0:29heat shimmered under numerous twin suns, distorting
- 0:32light. Sparse patches of glass root shrubs, their
- 0:35crystalline leafs, sharp as blades, clung to
- 0:39the cracked ground. The air is thick with silence.
- 0:43broken only by the occasional whistle of wind
- 0:45carving through the rocky dunes. I adjusted my
- 0:48glyph compass. It's pulsing blue light flickering
- 0:51erratically. Jarabic was close. For weeks I had
- 0:54been tracking this elusive glyph. A towering
- 0:57fusion of giraffe and ostrich. Its powerful legs
- 1:01built for speed. This carved beak strong enough
- 1:05to crush stone. But what made it truly legendary
- 1:09was its feathered mirage cloak. An ability that
- 1:12let it bend light, vanishing into the desert
- 1:15like a living mirage. Most monster catchers had
- 1:18tried and felled to capture it. Some swore it
- 1:21wasn't real. I had studied the Anato Desert's
- 1:23records, followed the shifting migration patterns,
- 1:26and listened to the old wanderers who had seen
- 1:28it only for a moment before it disappeared. Today
- 1:31I would not blink. I crouched low, running my
- 1:34fingers through the warm, shifting grains the
- 1:37hoof claw prints were fresh. Stretching in long
- 1:41strides across the dunes, Jared Beek had been
- 1:44here minutes ago. A sudden ripple in the air
- 1:46caught my attention, a distortion, like heat
- 1:50waves rising from the sand. My pulse quickened
- 1:52in silence, no wind, no distant calls of desert
- 1:55creatures, nothing. Jared Beek was watching me.
- 1:59Slowly, I reached into my satchel and pulled
- 2:01out a handful of storm root dust, a fine glowing
- 2:05powder that clung to movement and energy. In
- 2:08a swift motion, I threw it into the air. The
- 2:11dust swirled and then stuck to something huge.
- 2:14The outline of Jerebeek appeared before me, a
- 2:17towering, elegant figure with long sinewy legs
- 2:21and a graceful, fully arched neck. Feathers shimmered
- 2:25like liquid gold, flickering between visibility
- 2:28and complete transparency. His golden eyes locked
- 2:31onto mine, intelligent and unreadable. For a
- 2:35heartbeat, we shared our stare to each other.
- 2:38Sorry, then it bolted. Trying to tell you guys
- 2:41just how my encounter with Jerobiek went, I think
- 2:46I'm having a little bit of trouble letting it
- 2:48come out fluently. I'm very sorry if I mess up
- 2:52on my words and I hope that you guys will enjoy
- 2:55this true tell of how I caught Jerobiek. Jerobiek
- 2:59moved like a desert storm fast. Unpredictable,
- 3:03unstoppable, its feet barely touched the sand
- 3:06as it glided over the dunes, kicking up spirals
- 3:09of dust behind it. I sprinted after it, heart
- 3:14pounding, my rift, boots, hummed with energy,
- 3:18boosting my strides, but even then I was barely
- 3:21keeping up. Jerigbeak veered toward the cracked
- 3:24mezza, a treacherous expanse of uneven stone
- 3:28that jutted from the sand like the ribs of a
- 3:31buried giant. If it made it past the cliffs,
- 3:35it would vanish again into the desert, and I
- 3:37would lose it. Not this time. I reached into
- 3:40my belt and grabbed a face snare, a special trap
- 3:44designed for speed -based glyphs. It was the
- 3:47only glyph that I could use on this kind of glyph.
- 3:52So, anyways, it was a special trap designed for
- 3:56speed -based glyphs. Timing was everything. I
- 3:59had to throw it at just the right moment. Jarabic
- 4:02leaped onto a rock ledge. It's golden feathers
- 4:05flickering. It was seconds away from disappearing.
- 4:10I threw the snare. The air crackled as the device
- 4:12unfurled. Releasing an electromagnetic net that
- 4:17wrapped around Jarabic's legs, the creature let
- 4:19out a sharp, almost offended squawk as if stumbled.
- 4:26Or as it stumbled, it's body flickering between
- 4:28visible and invisible. I rushed forward, placing
- 4:32my glyphid on the ground. The ancient symbols
- 4:37etched into its surface began to glow, pulling
- 4:39in the energy of the trapped creature. And just
- 4:43as I was about to capture the creature, he got
- 4:46loose. And in the swift moment, Jarrowbeak had
- 4:50broken my face near, so I had to try another
- 4:53face near. So reaching into my satchel, I grabbed
- 4:57out a second face near, but it missed. The net
- 5:01flew wide, catching nothing but air. I skid it
- 5:04to a halt, breathing, breath -burning in my chest.
- 5:07My boots hummed, then winded, out of charge.
- 5:11I collapsed to my knees, sand pouring between
- 5:13my fingers. High on a distant ridge I saw it,
- 5:16Jerabic, a golden ghost against the red sky.
- 5:20It paused for a heartbeat, looking back, and
- 5:23then vanished into the heat haze. I had felled.
- 5:27The glyphid in my satchel stayed closed, silent
- 5:30and empty. I stayed in the desert long after
- 5:35Jerebik disappeared. The silence returned heavy
- 5:38and thick. I watched the sun dip its light longer
- 5:44and longer because I know that the suns they
- 5:48never come down from the sky. The suns and the
- 5:52moons of Nibiru just sit there right there in
- 5:55the middle of the sky. But anyways, so casting
- 5:59long shadows over the dunes, I let myself feel
- 6:02the frustration, the ache of all the weeks, the
- 6:06planning, the close call. But while I was sitting
- 6:09there feeling sorry for myself, I decided I was
- 6:13going to catch him. It was not going to be a
- 6:16loss. And once with movement, I grabbed my glyphot,
- 6:20the backup device I carried for emergency captures
- 6:23and slammed it into the sand. I wouldn't lose
- 6:26Jarrahfig, not now, not after everything. The
- 6:29glyph it blinked once, then fizzled. The screen
- 6:33cracked, the runes flickered weakly, before vanishing
- 6:36entirely, broken. My heart sank, I barely had
- 6:39time to react before Jarrahfig let out a deep
- 6:41resonant cry. A sound like wind tearing through
- 6:44hollow stone, and then it charged. It came at
- 6:48me with terrifying speed, every step shaking
- 6:51the sand beneath my feet. I scramble back. The
- 6:55heat and fear mixing in my chest like fire, its
- 6:58golden beak glinted in the sunlight, and its
- 7:01long legs moved with the momentum of a landslide.
- 7:05But it didn't strike. The last possible second,
- 7:08Jeref beak swerved, picking up a spiral of hot
- 7:11wind and sand that blinded me. I stumbled coughing,
- 7:15shielding my eyes. When the dust settled, Jeref
- 7:17beak was gone again. I sat down in the sand,
- 7:21cliff it still in hand, broken and useless. I
- 7:24had been so sure, so certain that I could outsmart
- 7:27the desert. Outsmarts, or outmatch, one of the
- 7:31most elusive glyphs on Nibiru. But sometimes
- 7:33the wind doesn't care how prepared you are. Sometimes
- 7:37the wind humbles you. And maybe that's the point.
- 7:41Now you might think that's where my run -in with
- 7:43Jarabic ends, but you'd be wrong. I went back
- 7:46the next week. Something about the way it looked
- 7:48at me right before it vanished into the dunes
- 7:51stuck with me. That charge doesn't mean to harm.
- 7:55It was a warning, or maybe a test. But a test
- 7:58of what? So I returned, this time, not as a hunter,
- 8:03but as a student. No sneer, no broken glyphot,
- 8:06just me. A repaired compass and a small satchel
- 8:10of offerings. Mirage berries, sun -cracked minerals,
- 8:14and a polished mirror stone, said to reflect
- 8:17one's spirit. I camped at the edge of the cra
- 8:21- mezza where the wind never stops whispering
- 8:25and the sand sings strange lullabies at night
- 8:28days past I saw nothing but on the fourth morning
- 8:31just as the sun began there just as the Sun's
- 8:35began their ever -present light I woke to silence
- 8:40no birds no wind no sound so just the soft soft
- 8:45crunch of sand I turned slowly there it was Jerebeek
- 8:50Not cloaked in mirage this time, fully visible.
- 8:54Golden feathers glittering like firelight, long
- 8:58neck tilted curiously, head cocked, as if it
- 9:02was studying me this time. No fear, no chase,
- 9:06just recognition. I reached into my satchel and
- 9:09gently rolled a mirage berry onto the sand between
- 9:13us. Jerabic stepped forward slowly and deliberate.
- 9:17It sniffed the fruit then looked at me. then
- 9:19it lowered its head, not submission, but respect.
- 9:23And then it was gone again, leaving only a single
- 9:25iridescent feather in the sand where it stood.
- 9:29I didn't catch Jerebik, but I think something
- 9:31even rarer happened. I was seen by it not as
- 9:35a threat, not as a predator, but as a fellow
- 9:38traveler, and maybe that's the real cat. After
- 9:41my second encounter with Jerebik, I didn't head
- 9:44to another hunt. I returned home to the towering
- 9:48spires of Luan Academy, where the twin sons filtered
- 9:51through stained glass and the halls hummed with
- 9:54whispers of ancient glyph lore. My boots were
- 9:57still caked in dirt, sand, sorry, desert sand.
- 10:01When I stepped into Professor Orian's office,
- 10:04the air smelled of parchment, old tea, and ozone.
- 10:07Exactly how it always did. Not my favorite thing
- 10:12to be exact, but... The professor sat at his
- 10:14desk, his back to me, fingers gliding through
- 10:18glowing glyphs' protections, floating mid -air.
- 10:21Without turning, he said, you didn't capture
- 10:23it, did you? I let the single shimmering feather
- 10:28fall onto his desk. He turned, finally meeting
- 10:31my eyes. Ah, so you did find it. I nodded. I
- 10:35found Jarebeek twice. I told him everything,
- 10:38the broken glyphid, the charge, the second journey,
- 10:41the offering, the silence, the trust. He listened
- 10:45quietly, only interjecting once to mutter, fascinating,
- 10:49as I described the moment Jirabeeq lowered its
- 10:51head. When I finished, he tapped a long, knotted
- 10:55finger on the desk. You've just confirmed what
- 10:58the old legend only hinted at. He stood walking
- 11:02slowly to one of the shelves. He pulled down
- 11:05a dusty tome, bound in cracked leather, pages
- 11:10etched with sunny, faded ink. Jarabeek isn't
- 11:14just a speed -based glyph. It's a sentient -bound,
- 11:18rare ancient. Some of the first glyphs forged
- 11:22under Nibiru's twin sons were given the ability
- 11:25to choose their bond, not through force, not
- 11:28through capture, through connection. He turned
- 11:31the book so I could see an old sketch. Jarabeek,
- 11:35wings outstretched, neck arched, eyes glowing.
- 11:39They were the Watchers, the Judges, if One deems
- 11:44you worthy, you may follow. Or they may follow
- 11:47you, sorry. My heart pounded, so it can join
- 11:51me, but not like the others. Orian smiled faintly.
- 11:56No, Jarabeeq must want to walk beside you. It
- 11:58isn't bound by a pyramid -style atheris. It's
- 12:01bound by trust. I look down at the feather in
- 12:04my hand, feeling its warmth hummed gently against
- 12:07my skin. I think... I think it is watching me.
- 12:11Professor Orian nodded. then don't hurt anyone
- 12:14anymore or hunt it anymore. Then what do I do?
- 12:18You wait, he simply said. You learn, you grow.
- 12:22Let it see who you truly are. This wasn't my
- 12:25finest moment, but in the next moments I cried
- 12:28a bit and threw a little bit of a hissy fit.
- 12:33But I want to catch it, and now I cried. The
- 12:36words burst out of me before I could stop them.
- 12:38My voice cracked, echoing off the tall stone
- 12:41walls of the Academy Archives. I wiped, angrily,
- 12:45at my face, but the tears kept coming, hot, bitter,
- 12:49blurring the shimmering feather in my hand. Professor
- 12:52Orient turned slowly from the shelves he didn't
- 12:55look surprised, in the least. He didn't scald
- 13:02me. He just nodded. It's not fair, I whispered.
- 13:05I've trained. I've studied. I've chased it through
- 13:08a sandstorm. I nearly got trampled. I earned
- 13:10this. I deserve it." He stepped forward, his
- 13:13eyes ancient and star -bright, softening. Wanting
- 13:17it doesn't make you weak, he said. Crying doesn't
- 13:21make you wrong. What you feel is valid, Stelaferis,
- 13:24but sometimes the wild doesn't care about what
- 13:27we've earned. It cares about who we are in the
- 13:30waiting. I clenched my fist. I don't want to
- 13:34wait. He placed a hand on my shoulder. Then don't.
- 13:38That night I stood alone at the Academy Skybridge.
- 13:44The wind hugging at my coat. Stars like fireflies
- 13:47caught in the web of the night. Sorry. I messed
- 13:52up all my words there, guys, but I keep doing
- 13:56it. I held the broken glyphid in my hand and
- 13:59the golden feather in the other. And I made a
- 14:01decision. If Jarabic wouldn't come to me, then
- 14:04I'd go back. Not to beg, not to plead, but to
- 14:07try again. To prove that I wasn't giving up.
- 14:11Not on the glyph. Not on myself. I cried today.
- 14:17I broke down in front of one of the most respected
- 14:19professors in the galaxy and I'm not ashamed
- 14:22because I'm Stella Ferris. And tomorrow, I return
- 14:26to the desert. Not to wait, but to catch Jarabic.
- 14:29No matter what. Oh guys, third time's a charm,
- 14:35because this is not even where the story ends,
- 14:38because I went back to the Unado Desert a third
- 14:41time to try and catch the Jerabic. The Unado
- 14:45Desert greeted me like an old rival, you know?
- 14:49The wind was sharper, the sun's hotter, sand
- 14:53somehow heavier beneath my boots. My heart pounded
- 14:56louder than the wind, and I could still hear
- 14:58my voice from the night in the archives, breaking,
- 15:01trembling, full of pain. I wanted to catch it.
- 15:04I needed to. This wasn't about proving anything
- 15:07to Professor Orian or to the other catchers who
- 15:10whispered about failed missions. This wasn't
- 15:12even about the Academy anymore. This was about
- 15:15me and Jerebeek. The third time, the final time,
- 15:20I returned with no backup. No face near. No fancy
- 15:24tech, just one repaired glyphid. Reforged by
- 15:30my own hands and my own two feet. I follow the
- 15:33patterns again, found the fresh tracks, traced
- 15:35the shimmering lights across the horizon. And
- 15:38when I saw the flickering of lights rippling
- 15:40across the dunes, I didn't throw anything. I
- 15:42ran. Jerobik saw me. I know it did. And like
- 15:47the wind itself, it moved, graceful, untouchable,
- 15:50mocking. The chase was on again. I don't know
- 15:54how long we ran. My boots were burning, my lungs
- 15:57were on fire, my vision blurred, but I didn't
- 16:00stop. Jarabic glanced back and that was my opening.
- 16:04I placed my glyphit and powered it. With a pulse
- 16:10crystal, I'd found buried deep in the cracked
- 16:14mezza. The moment it hit the ground, the device
- 16:17roared to life, forming a glowing triangle that
- 16:20shimmered with blue light, not a trap, an invitation.
- 16:23Jerabic slowed, and for one impossible moment
- 16:27it stepped into the light. The glyphot locked,
- 16:30the triangle snapped shut. Energy surged through
- 16:32the sand like a shockwave. The wind howled, the
- 16:36desert roared, and then silence. The night faded.
- 16:41The glyphot was sealed, my hands trembling as
- 16:43I picked it up. I laughed, I cried. And through
- 16:47exhausted breaths, I whispered, third time's
- 16:50a charm. I did it. I finally did it, Jerobique
- 16:54is mine! Not because I forced it, because I didn't
- 16:57give up, and because I earned its respect, and
- 17:00maybe because it saw something in me too. This
- 17:03is Stelifera signing off, with sand in my teeth,
- 17:07sweat in my eyes, and Jerobique by my side, to
- 17:11all the travelers and monster catchers out there.
- 17:14Don't let failure bear you, let it shape you.
- 17:17And remember, sometimes a third time isn't just
- 17:20the charm. is the beginning of something greater.
- 17:24I mean, I have Jarabique now! He's a very amazing
- 17:27glyph, and, well, when he meets the other glyphs,
- 17:32I think he'll be very happy. Actually, you know
- 17:36what? We're not going to get off here yet, because
- 17:38I want to tell you about how he reacted in the
- 17:43Sanctuary. Catching Jarabique was one thing,
- 17:48getting him to settle into life in - Pyramid
- 17:51House and Sanctuary. Well, let's just say he's
- 17:54not exactly a team player. Our Pyramid House,
- 17:58my Sanctuary, my home, where Xena and I live
- 18:00with all our glyphs, is usually a peaceful glowing
- 18:04haven built with golden sandstone and shimmering
- 18:08energy panels. It hums with a soft ancient warmth.
- 18:12Light filters through crystal skylights. Wind
- 18:16chimes sing with enchanted notes. Let's snap
- 18:19in sunbeams, snack in shared gardens, and occasionally
- 18:23get into friendly mischief. It's calm, cozy,
- 18:26beautiful. Jarabic hates it. The moment I released
- 18:29him into the high atrium, Jarabic stretched his
- 18:33long neck, looked around and let out a shrill,
- 18:36offended scok that echoed off the pyramid's inner
- 18:39walls. He stomped past the zen. sand garden.
- 18:45Ignored the sun -baked perch I made just for
- 18:48him and glared at our communal berry table like
- 18:52it hadn't sought to his bloodline. Senna tried
- 18:55to cheer him up with some golden mirage berries
- 18:57and a feather massage. She's dramatic, but she
- 19:03means well. But he just flared his wings and
- 19:06knocked the bowl straight into the reflecting
- 19:08pole. Now he's claimed the very tip of the pyramid.
- 19:12skylight as his personal throne, roosting up
- 19:15there and watching us like some ancient guardian
- 19:18with serious attitude. He screeches at dawn,
- 19:23every dawn, loud enough to rattle my tea mugs.
- 19:27He glares at the other glyphs like they're beneath
- 19:30him, except for Pickles, my ghost dog, who he
- 19:34tolerates only because Pickles floats and doesn't
- 19:37talk. Even the pyramid's energy sensors seem
- 19:40confused. The automatic sunlight adjusts dim
- 19:45when he walks by. I swear, one of the stone doors
- 19:49shut him itself when he approached. I tried to
- 19:53talk to him yesterday, heart to heart. Just me,
- 19:55a desert legend, and a plate of mirage berries.
- 19:59He stared at me, huffed, then turned and popped
- 20:01off the ledge. Right on to Zena's meditation
- 20:04rug. Jerobique is moody, sun -loving, attention
- 20:08-demanding. feathered drama queen and I absolutely
- 20:13adore him he doesn't love the pyramid yet but
- 20:15this is his home now our home in one way or another
- 20:19he'll come to see that even if it takes a hundred
- 20:22mirage berries a thousand sun baths and several
- 20:25deep cleanings of zena's favorite rug this is
- 20:29still a ferris signing off from a pyramid full
- 20:31of love lights and one very cranky desert glyph
- 20:35stay curious stay patient and maybe check your
- 20:38roof for angry birds. And remember, one failure
- 20:43does not mean that you should weep. One failure
- 20:49means that you should take it and make it into
- 20:52lemonade. Meaning you should take it and turn
- 20:54it around and make it something good. This is
- 20:57Salifarus saying goodbye.
