- 2:38Speaker 1: c OKA and Atlanta, Georgia and the syndicates nationally on
- 2:41Speaker 1: HBCU stations in nationwide as well as my podcast. But
- 2:45Speaker 1: more importantly, when I get a talent like you who
- 2:48Speaker 1: understands that the journey, you know, journey I mentioned when
- 2:51Speaker 1: we first met. We're back when on the Jamie Foxx Show.
- 2:53Speaker 1: But it's been a journey. Talk about let's start now
- 2:56Speaker 1: presently the excitement that's happening the podcast to talk show.
- 3:00Speaker 1: How did the talk show come about? Because you were
- 3:03Speaker 1: guesting series on it, and then also that the talk
- 3:06Speaker 1: show was given, It was you giving the opportunity to
- 3:09Speaker 1: do it. Can you walk it through that process emotionally
- 3:11Speaker 1: and physically? Oh yeah, I've always wanted to do have
- 3:16Speaker 1: a talk show of my own. This started back eighteen
- 3:20Speaker 1: years ago. I had actually done a pilot for a
- 3:25Speaker 1: talk show for ABC Disney. I did it on the
- 3:28Speaker 1: set of Regis and Kelly and and it went, you
- 3:34Speaker 1: know what, it was okay. Like they came and saw me,
- 3:37Speaker 1: the Disney people doing stand up at the Last Factory Rishaun,
- 3:42Speaker 1: and they liked me, and they did this pilot and
- 3:46Speaker 1: they tried to do a sidekick and it didn't work.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Um you know with the chemistry testing with all of
- 3:51Speaker 1: the major stars that you hear about now, and it
- 3:54Speaker 1: didn't work. So they did it for me by myself
- 3:57Speaker 1: and it was okay. And the reason why it was
- 3:59Speaker 1: okay it was because they kept coming to me the
- 4:02Speaker 1: executive thing, we want to see that thing that you
- 4:04Speaker 1: do on stage. And I didn't know what that thing
- 4:08Speaker 1: was that they were talking about. All I knew was
- 4:10Speaker 1: that I was grateful to God for the opportunity. I
- 4:13Speaker 1: just wanted to make people laugh. My voice wasn't even
- 4:16Speaker 1: as deep. It pretty much was like, hey, everybody, how
- 4:18Speaker 1: you doing. Welcome to my home show, right, And it
- 4:22Speaker 1: didn't work then eighteen years ago, because I didn't know
- 4:25Speaker 1: who I was. I didn't know really who my audience was.
- 4:30Speaker 1: I didn't know, I excuse me, what I would do,
- 4:32Speaker 1: what I wouldn't do. If you told me to stand
- 4:34Speaker 1: on my head, I would have done it as long
- 4:36Speaker 1: as it made people laugh. So fast forward. It didn't go,
- 4:41Speaker 1: of course it didn't, and so I got the opportunity.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I went back to acting, still having that dream, and
- 4:47Speaker 1: I was doing a movie called Who's Your Caddie? And
- 4:51Speaker 1: they asked me to co host on the View like
- 4:52Speaker 1: a guest. Well, I got that job, and you know
- 4:56Speaker 1: that was like really my training ground for t show.
- 5:01Speaker 1: And in the meantime, I've done a lot of guests,
- 5:03Speaker 1: you know, where I was sitting on the couch and
- 5:05Speaker 1: I was a guest. So I learned how to do
- 5:07Speaker 1: talk shows and what I like. From that end, I
- 5:10Speaker 1: did the View, got let go, got fired from the View,
- 5:14Speaker 1: and I went and pitched a talk Let's let's talk
- 5:18Speaker 1: about that, because you know, I know I've had some
- 5:20Speaker 1: dark moments in Hollywood, because you know, when it happens
- 5:23Speaker 1: in public like that, you know, it's not like working
- 5:26Speaker 1: at IBM. It's not like working at the post office
- 5:28Speaker 1: at burber Key. You know, you just walk home and
- 5:30Speaker 1: go and tell your loved ones you don't have a job.
- 5:32Speaker 1: When it happens in public, that really takes a twofold.
- 5:36Speaker 1: It's takes the ego hit, it takes a personal hit,
- 5:39Speaker 1: and then you also wonder, oh, you're gonna get another shot?
- 5:42Speaker 1: How did you overcome that moment? Well, I knew I
- 5:46Speaker 1: couldn't be too upset when they released me from the
- 5:49Speaker 1: View because God had told me and I have to
- 5:52Speaker 1: go spiritual in my career because that is the number
- 5:55Speaker 1: one who has made it happen. But God had said
- 5:58Speaker 1: to me very clearly that last year of the View,
- 6:02Speaker 1: it's time to go. It's time to move. And when
- 6:05Speaker 1: I told my people, my team that I was going
- 6:08Speaker 1: to quit the View, everybody went into an uproar. Oh
- 6:11Speaker 1: my god, you won't be able to get a talk show.
- 6:13Speaker 1: It takes a year to develop. You're making amazing money,
- 6:16Speaker 1: and I was, you're making all of this money, You're
- 6:19Speaker 1: not gonna nobody in Hollywood knows you. No, No, no,
- 6:22Speaker 1: you can't, you can't, And I said no, God was
- 6:24Speaker 1: very clear it's time for me to go. It was
- 6:27Speaker 1: the year that Barbara Walters was retiring. And then once
- 6:31Speaker 1: I was clear on that, they kept trying to give
- 6:32Speaker 1: me more money at the View to keep me, and
- 6:35Speaker 1: I kept I continued saying no. And then Rashaun, once
- 6:39Speaker 1: it happened that I thought I was going to go
- 6:40Speaker 1: through a very messy divorce, I got scared and I said, oh,
- 6:46Speaker 1: this is gonna be expensive and messy. I'm gonna stay
- 6:48Speaker 1: at the View and take the big old Stalary raise
- 6:52Speaker 1: they gave me. Well, do you know when God says
- 6:55Speaker 1: it's time to go, if you don't do it, he's
- 6:58Speaker 1: gonna push you out of it. Because he said it
- 7:00Speaker 1: was time to go. And so they released They did
- 7:04Speaker 1: not renew Jenny McCarthy's contract. They let go of a
- 7:08Speaker 1: Barbara Walker's co creator, Bill Getty. It was a number
- 7:11Speaker 1: of people that they were letting go. And I'm I'm
- 7:12Speaker 1: praying with everybody. I'm like, you know what, Jenny is
- 7:14Speaker 1: gonna be? Okay, God gonna give you something better. You
- 7:17Speaker 1: know what Bill Getty is, don't be okay. And then
- 7:19Speaker 1: they called me in the office. They said, Sarychever, we
- 7:22Speaker 1: need to see you. And I was like, for what.
- 7:24Speaker 1: I went in there and they said, um. They said,
- 7:27Speaker 1: we're gonna release you from your contract now when you're
- 7:29Speaker 1: gonna do what? And they said, we're not gonna renew
- 7:32Speaker 1: your contract. And I said, but you get you just
- 7:36Speaker 1: were trying to give me a big salary bump. And
- 7:38Speaker 1: they said, no, things are different now and we're not
- 7:41Speaker 1: going to renew. And I remember I was sitting in
- 7:44Speaker 1: my dressing room in front of the mirror, and I said, Lord,
- 7:48Speaker 1: I'm about to go through this divorce. I got a
- 7:50Speaker 1: child with special needs, his therapy, his schooling. Did I
- 7:54Speaker 1: tell you I'm about to get divorced? And this is
- 7:56Speaker 1: gonna cost me a lot of money? And it was
- 7:59Speaker 1: so still the voice of God saying I told you
- 8:04Speaker 1: it was time to go. So if I got to
- 8:06Speaker 1: push you out, it's time to go. And I said, well,
- 8:10Speaker 1: then what am I supposed to do? God, because I
- 8:12Speaker 1: don't know if I told you I'm getting a divorce.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Sometimes you've been talking to God but he didn't hear you.
- 8:17Speaker 1: And I just felt God say, do you trust me?
- 8:21Speaker 1: And I said, not really. I just I got this much,
- 8:25Speaker 1: this ends of trust and it was like I felt
- 8:28Speaker 1: like God saying that's all I need and that was it.
- 8:32Speaker 1: But resigned literally two weeks later. I don't even think
- 8:35Speaker 1: it was two weeks. Will Packer called me and he said, hey, lady,
- 8:39Speaker 1: but if I was two in the morning, I got
- 8:41Speaker 1: a role for you and right along too. Would you
- 8:44Speaker 1: play this part? I say yes. A week before that,
- 8:48Speaker 1: Sinderella on Broadway called and said, we want you to
- 8:51Speaker 1: play the evil stepmother Keiki Palmers playing Cinderella. You were
- 8:55Speaker 1: the first black evil stepmother on Broadway. I said, I
- 8:58Speaker 1: can't sing. They said, what don't work? We took away
- 9:00Speaker 1: all your solo You're just gonna sing with Kiki and
- 9:03Speaker 1: the other in your step daughters. I said, yes, I
- 9:06Speaker 1: did a month's run, got to stay in a big penhouse.
- 9:09Speaker 1: They paid me a lot of money to be on
- 9:10Speaker 1: Broadway and went through a very extensive divorce. But God
- 9:15Speaker 1: always provided, So that's how yes it was. It was
- 9:18Speaker 1: a little embarrassing, but I knew behind it right there
- 9:21Speaker 1: was a reason why they let me go. So sometimes
- 9:24Speaker 1: I think we look at things like, oh my god,
- 9:26Speaker 1: what am I gonna do. This is horrible. How am
- 9:29Speaker 1: I going to bounce back? But if God says it's
- 9:31Speaker 1: time to go, then there's something else that he has.
- 9:34Speaker 1: So with that, I went again around to Hollywood pitching
- 9:40Speaker 1: a talk show and everybody said no. Resigned absolutely. Let
- 9:44Speaker 1: everybody know. I'm talking to the one and only Sherry Shepherd.
- 9:46Speaker 1: She's talking about her history, but she now is the
- 9:49Speaker 1: new queen of daytime talk. If you haven't seen the show,
- 9:52Speaker 1: it's called Sherry in Image Award winning show that one
- 9:55Speaker 1: this year, and now she's telling us her journey. Her
- 9:58Speaker 1: journey is one of I said early, if you have
- 10:01Speaker 1: a gift, leave with your gift. And that's what she's doing.
- 10:04Speaker 1: And when people told her, her friends, her family, the
- 10:06Speaker 1: whole co workers told her to stay on the view,
- 10:08Speaker 1: she knew it was time to do to leave. That's
- 10:11Speaker 1: why I say, if you have a plan, you have
- 10:12Speaker 1: a dream, stick with it. And that's what she telling us.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Now continue the story. Well, I was pitching the talk show.
- 10:18Speaker 1: I had the vision in my head and everybody was
- 10:21Speaker 1: not interested. Everybody said no. They kept saying no, So
- 10:24Speaker 1: I said, well, what am I supposed to do? I
- 10:27Speaker 1: kept acting, but I kept honing my skills. I would go.
- 10:30Speaker 1: I was on talk shows and again be a guest
- 10:33Speaker 1: right so that I get hold no skills. And I
- 10:35Speaker 1: think after that I just started doing like game shows.
- 10:39Speaker 1: I was hosting the new Libay Game. I was hosting
- 10:42Speaker 1: another game show where I got to hone my skills,
- 10:44Speaker 1: and just like being able to improv and talk to people,
- 10:47Speaker 1: I kept doing stand up. All of these things really
- 10:51Speaker 1: prepped me for being able to do a talk show
- 10:53Speaker 1: stand up. I said, on stage for forty five minutes,
- 10:56Speaker 1: you know you you handle stand up absolutely. I saw
- 10:59Speaker 1: you when you was open for Kim that Kim tour,
- 11:01Speaker 1: which was selling when I was opening for Kim and
- 11:04Speaker 1: baby Face. When you stand on stage, you have to
- 11:09Speaker 1: talk for forty five minutes. And I always tell people
- 11:13Speaker 1: stand up comics make the best talk show homes because
- 11:16Speaker 1: we know how to create magic where there is none.
- 11:19Speaker 1: There's no death space with the stand up comic. We're
- 11:21Speaker 1: used to improving, we're used to making things funny, and
- 11:25Speaker 1: everybody is continued to say no. I continue. My acting
- 11:28Speaker 1: career flourished, and after that what happened was I think
- 11:34Speaker 1: around two thousand, two thousand and nine Wendy Williams was
- 11:41Speaker 1: in We knew that she was sick, but we didn't
- 11:44Speaker 1: know she was in rehab. And I was as summing
- 11:46Speaker 1: a movie with Acon Crockett and DC and the Wendy
- 11:51Speaker 1: Williams show called Now. I ha been a guest on
- 11:53Speaker 1: her show. There's even a clip of me on YouTube
- 11:55Speaker 1: of Wendy saying what do you want to do? And
- 11:57Speaker 1: I said, Wendy, I'm want my own talk show. Maybe
- 11:59Speaker 1: we could go. Oh, Sherry that on YouTube? Wow to existence,
- 12:06Speaker 1: I'm running on the couch and I go, maybe we
- 12:08Speaker 1: go with Sherry. She laughed. And so they called me
- 12:12Speaker 1: to be when the people were filling in for Wendy,
- 12:14Speaker 1: they had panels of comics. Now this in two thousand
- 12:17Speaker 1: and nine. This in two thousand and nine, two thousand
- 12:20Speaker 1: and nine, and they wanted you to be a part
- 12:22Speaker 1: of a panel. And I remember Michael Yo and different
- 12:25Speaker 1: comics were filling in at one time for Wendy, kind
- 12:27Speaker 1: of like a view light panel. And so when they
- 12:30Speaker 1: called me, something inside of me said say no, And
- 12:33Speaker 1: I said no, I will I will host if you
- 12:37Speaker 1: let me do it by myself, and give me two
- 12:41Speaker 1: days Monday and Tuesday, because Monday is your highest rated day,
- 12:44Speaker 1: because so much stuff happens over the weekend and people
- 12:47Speaker 1: want to see what you're gonna say. And they said,
- 12:49Speaker 1: absolutely not, You'll be a part of a panel. And
- 12:52Speaker 1: I said no, and I walked away, and I remember saying,
- 12:54Speaker 1: acon I hope I did the right thing, but I
- 12:57Speaker 1: know I came from doing the view, so I know
- 13:00Speaker 1: I could do it by myself. It's been my dream.
- 13:02Speaker 1: They didn't call me for about two or three weeks.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Heki Palmer hosted it by herself. There are only four
- 13:07Speaker 1: people that did it. Michael Rapp Report hosted it by himself,
- 13:11Speaker 1: Jerry O'Connell hosted it by himself, and me, And they
- 13:15Speaker 1: called me back and they said, we'll let you host
- 13:17Speaker 1: it for two days by yourself, Monday and Tuesday. And
- 13:23Speaker 1: I was so nervous, but when I tell you, the
- 13:25Speaker 1: ratings were amazing. When I hosted it. They called me
- 13:31Speaker 1: really before I had even left New York, and they said,
- 13:33Speaker 1: can you host again the entire week. By the time
- 13:36Speaker 1: I got back to my hotel to change, they had
- 13:39Speaker 1: canceled it. They canceled me hosting. They showed reruns. But
- 13:42Speaker 1: what they did do is Debmar Mercury offered me a
- 13:46Speaker 1: talk show back in two thousand and nine, and it
- 13:50Speaker 1: didn't happen. When I tell you, Rashaun, I literally was like, God,
- 13:55Speaker 1: what is going on? Two thousand not We negotiated the salary,
- 14:01Speaker 1: we had everything together. I knew what I would do
- 14:03Speaker 1: with this talk show that my Mercury had, and it
- 14:07Speaker 1: just they pulled the contract literally before I was supposed
- 14:11Speaker 1: to sign it. And I'm going, what in the world,
- 14:17Speaker 1: ugly cries not running down my nose. My ratings were
- 14:20Speaker 1: amazing for those two days, no reason, my team just goes.
- 14:25Speaker 1: They just pulled the contract. They resended the offer. So
- 14:28Speaker 1: I go again to Hollywood pitching is my demo reel
- 14:33Speaker 1: was me filling in for Wendy and I took it
- 14:36Speaker 1: around and one lady even said, a big casting director,
- 14:39Speaker 1: there's a big talk show in the air now that
- 14:41Speaker 1: they produced. She looked at me and she said, I said,
- 14:44Speaker 1: I got the sizzle reel because it kind of shows
- 14:46Speaker 1: what I want to do from my own time. She
- 14:48Speaker 1: said I don't need to see it, and I said,
- 14:50Speaker 1: but I really need you to see if she goes,
- 14:52Speaker 1: I don't and she did her hand like dismissing dismission.
- 14:55Speaker 1: I don't. Very dismissingly, she said, I don't need to
- 14:58Speaker 1: see it, and she proceeded to tell me about a
- 15:01Speaker 1: new talk show they had picked up, and if they
- 15:03Speaker 1: had picked up this other talk show with a singer
- 15:06Speaker 1: from a music show and it was amazing and you know,
- 15:10Speaker 1: and she was like, maybe I could put you on
- 15:13Speaker 1: a talk show where it's four three cooks and you
- 15:17Speaker 1: learn how to America with the And I'm like, I
- 15:21Speaker 1: don't that is very true. It's Sherry O that thought.
- 15:25Speaker 1: We're gonna be right back because I'm telling you you
- 15:27Speaker 1: want to hear about the too funny Mamma's tour that podcast.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Want to hear about all her opportunities. More importantly, Sherry,
- 15:34Speaker 1: you following your dreams. You're live in your dream That's
- 15:36Speaker 1: what you show money, money making conversations, masterclasses all the time,
- 15:39Speaker 1: letting people that in your darkest moment, would keep dreaming,
- 15:42Speaker 1: in your darkest moment, would keep winning because people out
- 15:44Speaker 1: there will find you because they believe in you, and
- 15:47Speaker 1: God has blessed you because you willing to put in
- 15:50Speaker 1: the work. Be right back more money making conversations, masterclass.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Don't don't go nowhere. Sharry Shepherd be right back. Please
- 15:56Speaker 1: don't go anywhere. We'll be right back with more money
- 15:59Speaker 1: making conversation. It's masterclass. You are now tuned into the
- 16:04Speaker 1: moneymaking conversations. Minute of Inspiration with Rashaan McDonald. This week,
- 16:09Speaker 1: I sat down with Mediamogral Hollywood executive and philanthropists Nick Cannon.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Although the former Child Store has experienced a long career
- 16:16Speaker 1: of success with no signs of slowing down, he explains
- 16:19Speaker 1: why he's so passionate about creating opportunities for others. It's
- 16:24Speaker 1: all about the community. For me, It's about giving other
- 16:26Speaker 1: people opportunities. It's about opening doors and sharing the knowledge,
- 16:29Speaker 1: wealth and wisdom that I've obtained with everyone else. I mean,
- 16:32Speaker 1: you know, obviously I'm still in school. Hopefully you know,
- 16:35Speaker 1: I'll be able to you know, Hu Howard University. I
- 16:38Speaker 1: want to go all the way. I'm getting my masters,
- 16:40Speaker 1: want to go to my doctorate and eventually be a
- 16:42Speaker 1: professor and teach the things that I've picked up along
- 16:48Speaker 1: the way. But it's all about the community, whether it's teaching,
- 16:51Speaker 1: whether it's entertaining, whether it's investing into us. If you
- 16:55Speaker 1: want to listen to this four interview with Nick Cannon,
- 16:57Speaker 1: It's available on money Making Conversations dot com. Welcome back
- 17:01Speaker 1: to the Money Making Conversations Masterclass hosted by Rashaun McDonald.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Welcome back to Rushan McDonald. I'm an interview. I'm interviewing
- 17:09Speaker 1: Sherry Sheep, a day new queen of Daytime Talk. It's
- 17:12Speaker 1: not something that thought that she just thought of last week.
- 17:15Speaker 1: It's something that's been hit on mine for a long time.
- 17:17Speaker 1: You know, always to be able to Can a dream
- 17:19Speaker 1: come true? Yes, if you put the work in Can
- 17:21Speaker 1: a dream come true? Yes? If you believe in it, yes,
- 17:23Speaker 1: if you keep telling people this is something you want
- 17:27Speaker 1: to do. Sherry, there was a daughter's there was people
- 17:30Speaker 1: who questioned you. At what point did you and yourself
- 17:33Speaker 1: realize you know something. I'm gonna trust me. I'm gonna
- 17:36Speaker 1: trust Sherry Shep. You know at what point? I just
- 17:39Speaker 1: I believed always, even when I got let go from
- 17:44Speaker 1: the view, I knew I had something to offer. I
- 17:48Speaker 1: just knew I needed one person to believe in me,
- 17:51Speaker 1: and no matter that I kept getting no. Yes, it hurts, yes,
- 17:56Speaker 1: I cried, but I knew that God didn't put this
- 18:01Speaker 1: dream inside of me and have me and me being
- 18:04Speaker 1: so good at it that it would fall to the wayside,
- 18:07Speaker 1: and I knew I had to hold on to that
- 18:09Speaker 1: dream despite what it looked like, because, like I said,
- 18:14Speaker 1: when I ran around this the last time in Hollywood
- 18:18Speaker 1: and everybody was saying no Rashawn, there was one network
- 18:22Speaker 1: that I went to and the woman said to me
- 18:25Speaker 1: she was ahead of the network and they didn't have
- 18:27Speaker 1: any talk shows, and she said, I got chills watching
- 18:31Speaker 1: you still in for Wendy in two thousand and nine.
- 18:34Speaker 1: She said, I loved the civil real I'm the one
- 18:37Speaker 1: that makes the decision, and I knew before I walked
- 18:39Speaker 1: out of the room that I had to deal for
- 18:41Speaker 1: my own talk show. Do you know six weeks later
- 18:44Speaker 1: they called my team and they said, Nope, we're gonna
- 18:46Speaker 1: go with another woman. We think she's amazing, and we're
- 18:50Speaker 1: not gonna do seriously. And I got what happened to
- 18:52Speaker 1: the ladies. She got killed. Right when I say that
- 18:55Speaker 1: was when I set out and I cried again, and
- 18:57Speaker 1: I said, I said, Lord, this is too painful, this dream.
- 19:01Speaker 1: I can see it in my mind of what I
- 19:03Speaker 1: want to do, and it's so painful. The knows that
- 19:07Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm gonna focus on my acting and let
- 19:10Speaker 1: you bring this back to me. Um, you know, because
- 19:13Speaker 1: I just don't want to. I don't want to think
- 19:14Speaker 1: about it, which bat you're telling anybody. You didn't just
- 19:16Speaker 1: sit around. And so because you didn't sit around and
- 19:18Speaker 1: going oh this is this is the end of the road.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Because you and I were talking all the time, you know,
- 19:23Speaker 1: because at the time twenty twelve to twenty fifty sixteen,
- 19:27Speaker 1: you know, Steve Harve and I was up in Chicago.
- 19:29Speaker 1: We would invite you onto the show as a gas
- 19:31Speaker 1: and we talked about the acting opportunities, and you will,
- 19:35Speaker 1: you were staying focused. You were letting the good in you,
- 19:38Speaker 1: the success and you to keep moving you forward and
- 19:41Speaker 1: not waddling around into what else. No, I didn't And
- 19:45Speaker 1: I remember doing um um, the Steve Harvey Show, and
- 19:48Speaker 1: I remember you guys will follow me out there, and
- 19:50Speaker 1: I remember you would be so encouraging to me, and
- 19:52Speaker 1: you would tell me how good I was. The one
- 19:55Speaker 1: thing I know I was. I'm a great guest. Yes
- 19:57Speaker 1: you are. Yes, you are the mark of a gree
- 20:00Speaker 1: I guess you don't have the talk show host don't
- 20:02Speaker 1: have to do any work. They can literally sit back
- 20:05Speaker 1: and enjoy you. And that's one of the things that
- 20:07Speaker 1: I knew as soon as I stepped out on a
- 20:09Speaker 1: couch and somebody had to interview me, just Jabe Kauai
- 20:12Speaker 1: to let me go and enjoy the show, and I
- 20:17Speaker 1: just started. I really, my acting took off. I was
- 20:20Speaker 1: a regular and sitcoms and doing the movies and critically
- 20:24Speaker 1: acclaimed movies. And what happened was out of the blue,
- 20:29Speaker 1: when I tell you, out of the blue, I got
- 20:33Speaker 1: a call. Not only was I co hosting, they asked
- 20:37Speaker 1: me back to co host for a week the View.
- 20:40Speaker 1: I hadn't been on the View for three years and
- 20:43Speaker 1: they called me and they said, becauld you just sit
- 20:44Speaker 1: in for an entire week? So that was amazing. I
- 20:48Speaker 1: got to sit in for an entire week and I
- 20:50Speaker 1: got a phone call from jeb My Mercury and they said,
- 20:53Speaker 1: could you fill in for a week now. At the time, oh,
- 20:57Speaker 1: I didn't even say this. I had gone to desinate
- 21:00Speaker 1: should They wanted me to be a co host in Atlanta,
- 21:03Speaker 1: and I said, no, I'm not moving to Atlanta. I'm
- 21:06Speaker 1: thinking if you'll if you'll let me do it in
- 21:08Speaker 1: La I'll think about it. And I met with the
- 21:10Speaker 1: the deitionation Folks, which is owned by five by Fox
- 21:14Speaker 1: absolutely Fox Enter Payments, Steve Brown over their Fox Steve Brown.
- 21:19Speaker 1: And I remember being in the meeting Rishan and We're talking, talking, talking,
- 21:25Speaker 1: and I said to them, with my ultimate goal, I
- 21:28Speaker 1: you know, being a co host is great, but my
- 21:30Speaker 1: ultimate goal is I want my own talk show. And
- 21:34Speaker 1: they said to me, They go, well, Nick Cannon has
- 21:38Speaker 1: a show face, and I go, Nick Cannon, Now this
- 21:44Speaker 1: is the reason why Nick Cannon and we love each
- 21:46Speaker 1: other out. Nick Cannon, well, I said it was because
- 21:51Speaker 1: the people who who filled in from Wendy by themselves,
- 21:55Speaker 1: they all got a show. He Key Palmer went on
- 21:58Speaker 1: to co host with Michael Strahan. She got that gig,
- 22:05Speaker 1: and right after filling in Lindy, Michael Rappaport got, I
- 22:09Speaker 1: think he did a pilot, uh for a talk show.
- 22:12Speaker 1: It didn't go. Jerry O'Connell did a six week test run,
- 22:16Speaker 1: remember his talk show. Those three they all had to
- 22:21Speaker 1: say it was like and so Nick Cannon also he
- 22:24Speaker 1: still didn't by himself, still with five of us. So
- 22:26Speaker 1: when they said Nick Cannon had and so I was like,
- 22:29Speaker 1: everybody who feels it ain't got something. And literally I went,
- 22:34Speaker 1: They said, yeah, Nick Cannon's his show's coming out, so
- 22:37Speaker 1: we don't really have the space for another talk show,
- 22:40Speaker 1: and but we want you to be on Dish. Now
- 22:42Speaker 1: I accept the destination. Thank goodness, because as soon as
- 22:45Speaker 1: I accepted it, uh quarantine, it happened. So they had
- 22:48Speaker 1: already right. But when they said Nick Cannon, and it
- 22:54Speaker 1: just it was a representative of everything that, like, I
- 22:58Speaker 1: could see my dream. But I'm gonna Lord, everybody else's
- 23:01Speaker 1: getting it but me. And I went downstairs in the
- 23:05Speaker 1: parking lot and I started crying again, and my manager
- 23:09Speaker 1: started crying too, And I looked at him and I go,
- 23:11Speaker 1: what are you crying for? Our crying crew? You're making
- 23:14Speaker 1: me cry? And I go with this. I don't like
- 23:17Speaker 1: I'm doing like Rich white Man. I don't like to
- 23:19Speaker 1: seeing cry. And I go, you just want me to
- 23:22Speaker 1: be crying. You're getting commission. You're fine. So after that happened,
- 23:27Speaker 1: I stayed on this nation, which prepared me again. Then
- 23:32Speaker 1: I was at home by myself, reading a prompter, and
- 23:35Speaker 1: also once we got back in the studio, reading a
- 23:37Speaker 1: prompter by myself. But you would think that I was
- 23:39Speaker 1: really um interacting with the Atlanta crew, bratt and head
- 23:44Speaker 1: cracking all of them. So reading that prompter helped me
- 23:48Speaker 1: tell a story like a bunch of people are in
- 23:51Speaker 1: the room. So that prepared me. So when the when
- 23:54Speaker 1: the offer came from the Debt Mar for me to
- 23:56Speaker 1: fill in, I was on the View guest co hosting,
- 24:00Speaker 1: and they called Jeb mar Mercury and said could you
- 24:02Speaker 1: fill in for a week. I ended up filling in
- 24:06Speaker 1: for a week and then kept asking me to come
- 24:08Speaker 1: back for another week. This nation was getting mad and
- 24:10Speaker 1: they were saying they, hey, wait a minute, hold don't
- 24:13Speaker 1: they said no. I said, Lord, you gotta work it out.
- 24:16Speaker 1: If this is from you, then you will work it out.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Then all of a sudden, dish Nation would say go
- 24:21Speaker 1: ahead and do another couple of weeks. Ellen called me.
- 24:24Speaker 1: I hadn't been on The Ellen Show in twelve years.
- 24:27Speaker 1: And then she called and she said, I want you
- 24:29Speaker 1: to come back for my last season. And then but
- 24:32Speaker 1: then I was supposed to sit in for a week
- 24:36Speaker 1: with Jeb Mar Mercury who did the Wendy Show. And
- 24:38Speaker 1: they said absolutely not because we've had you to sit in.
- 24:42Speaker 1: And I said, Lord, if this is what I'm supposed
- 24:44Speaker 1: to do, you'll work out both Rashaan do you know
- 24:47Speaker 1: they worked it out so I was able to do Ellen.
- 24:50Speaker 1: I hadn't set in her seat for twelve years, and
- 24:52Speaker 1: I still was able to go to New York and
- 24:54Speaker 1: my ratings were so high when I filled in for
- 24:58Speaker 1: Wendsy and and I said, Lord, I'm just gonna leave
- 25:02Speaker 1: it to you. I'm not gonna think about it. I'm
- 25:03Speaker 1: just gonna do what she created me to do. And
- 25:06Speaker 1: then they came through with the offer for me to
- 25:08Speaker 1: have my own talk show. Congratulation, same offer to day
- 25:11Speaker 1: come back within two thousand and nine, more money, money.
- 25:16Speaker 1: You gotta know your words and number one number one.
- 25:20Speaker 1: I know you do. We text each other all the time.
- 25:22Speaker 1: You text me. Look at this, I'm number one the
- 25:24Speaker 1: women and then number one talking today to talk show.
- 25:26Speaker 1: And but that doesn't stop you. I'm just telling you
- 25:28Speaker 1: something about her. You know, she has a movie she's
- 25:30Speaker 1: gonna do this summer. But more importantly, she's doing a
- 25:33Speaker 1: comedy tour with the incredibly funny actress Kim Whitley, who
- 25:37Speaker 1: I also have known for many many years. To two.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Funny Mamma's podcast was started basically on the Tim Join
- 25:43Speaker 1: the Show correct that's when you guys got together as
- 25:45Speaker 1: a duo and now you're turning into the podcast. It
- 25:48Speaker 1: has one back to back in ACP Awards for an
- 25:52Speaker 1: Image Award for Outstanding Podcasts. So what's this? What's this tour?
- 25:57Speaker 1: Y'all doing? Stand up? What are y'all doing out there?
- 26:00Speaker 1: We decided to It took me three years to get
- 26:02Speaker 1: this girl to do a podcast with me, and she
- 26:05Speaker 1: finally said yes, and we were doing that during the quarantine.
- 26:08Speaker 1: We just want to make people laugh and it's been
- 26:10Speaker 1: so successful and we've won the NAACP Image Awards. I'll say, Ken,
- 26:14Speaker 1: we got to take this on the road because I
- 26:15Speaker 1: don't know any duo that can get on stage and
- 26:18Speaker 1: stand there for an hour and talk to each other.
- 26:22Speaker 1: And she said yes. So we're doing some test days
- 26:25Speaker 1: to see how it goes, if we can stand each
- 26:27Speaker 1: other for three consecutive weekends, and if we do that,
- 26:33Speaker 1: we will continue this tour. And so where you can
- 26:36Speaker 1: go to Cherry Show tv dot com to find out
- 26:39Speaker 1: where we're gonna be. We're gonna be in New Brunswick,
- 26:40Speaker 1: New Jersey, Ben Salem, Pennsylvania, and Wilmington, Delaware, and so
- 26:47Speaker 1: Cherry SHOWTV dot com to find out exactly where the
- 26:50Speaker 1: theaters are, and we're just doing stand up and we
- 26:52Speaker 1: bowed our stand up comments who we love doing stand
- 26:55Speaker 1: up so to be able to go out there and
- 26:56Speaker 1: take this experience live to folks, those Shenanigan, I'm so excited. Well,
- 27:02Speaker 1: I just I gotta ask this because both of you
- 27:04Speaker 1: do a brilliant improv y'all Do y'all do any of that?
- 27:08Speaker 1: Do y'all come back on stage together? Or just one
- 27:10Speaker 1: doesn't said and then the other doesn't said? How does
- 27:12Speaker 1: that work? As far as stand up? Risaunt? When I said,
- 27:15Speaker 1: we've been doing the improv and we get on stage
- 27:18Speaker 1: and we get up, and we did a live stream
- 27:20Speaker 1: during quarantine, and you know, so people could see it.
- 27:23Speaker 1: We did almost ninety minutes improv on stage together just talking. Now,
- 27:30Speaker 1: what we do is we come on stage together for
- 27:32Speaker 1: about fifteen minutes, and we really got to be strict
- 27:35Speaker 1: because Kim and I can talk for two days. Right,
- 27:37Speaker 1: come on for about fifteen minutes, him, I leave. I
- 27:41Speaker 1: introduced Kim. She does stand up for about twenty thirty minutes.
- 27:44Speaker 1: I come back and I do usually about twenty or
- 27:47Speaker 1: thirty minutes as well. Then we do a Q and
- 27:50Speaker 1: A together, and we're on stage. Probably we're on stage
- 27:53Speaker 1: and today's stay. This is a Union theater. Absolutely we were.
- 27:59Speaker 1: We were just talk together and we take questions from
- 28:02Speaker 1: the audience and it's just a really great night. We'll
- 28:05Speaker 1: tell us again, how can we find out about the dates?

- 29:04Speaker 1: they gave a simpy, you know, and I'm thankful you
- 29:08Speaker 1: said to me, who is your audience? Who are you?
- 29:12Speaker 1: Who are you talking to? And it really made me
- 29:14Speaker 1: sit down and go who am I? And that is
- 29:17Speaker 1: that is informed every decision I make because remember I
- 29:21Speaker 1: said I didn't know what I was doing eighteen years ago.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Today I know how I can say no, I know
- 29:27Speaker 1: who I'm talking to, who my audience is. We're number
- 29:30Speaker 1: two we tired with Doctor Phil for women twenty five
- 29:34Speaker 1: to fifty four, right behind Kelly and m Ryan and
- 29:39Speaker 1: number one new talk show. So I know from you
- 29:41Speaker 1: saying Sherry, who are you? Who are you talking to?
- 29:45Speaker 1: I'm a single mom, I'm an entrepreneur, i am divorced,
- 29:49Speaker 1: I was married one. I'm a woman who came up,
- 29:53Speaker 1: who went, who was down and got back up. That's
- 29:56Speaker 1: who I'm talking to. I'm a woman in her fifties.
- 30:00Speaker 1: I'm talking to women also who are trying to redo
- 30:02Speaker 1: their life and reinvent themselves. That's who I'm talking to.
- 30:07Speaker 1: So I know when when somebody comes to me with

- 31:29Speaker 1: Benjamin Crump once told me that anyone should sit in
- 31:32Speaker 1: the courtroom doing a trial, and you will clearly see
- 31:35Speaker 1: there are two systems of justice. Just because they say
- 31:38Speaker 1: it's legal, that doesn't mean it's right. Everything Hitler did
- 31:42Speaker 1: to the Jews in Germany was legal, but that didn't
- 31:45Speaker 1: make it right. Slavery was legal, but that didn't make
- 31:48Speaker 1: it right. And they try to tell us where they did.
- 31:51Speaker 1: The trade by Martin and Brianna Taylor and Eric Gardner
- 31:55Speaker 1: and so many others was legal. But I've stand on

- 33:40Speaker 1: be here. I'm really excited about this conversation. I mean,
- 33:43Speaker 1: following Cherry, I'm hyped. Well, you know, Sherry, I was said,
- 33:47Speaker 1: I think Cherry will keep talking, but I got Melodie
- 33:50Speaker 1: on hole. It's so worried. No, no, you know because
- 33:53Speaker 1: if I feel fortunate to have not only her on
- 33:55Speaker 1: the show, but you on the show, because of the
- 33:57Speaker 1: fact that you drive a different medium in this business
- 34:00Speaker 1: is and we're always talking about what kind of business
- 34:03Speaker 1: can what kind of careers can our children have of color?
- 34:06Speaker 1: And then we know in this industry there's general tendency
- 34:09Speaker 1: to believe that we only do a certain type of
- 34:13Speaker 1: career choices. And when you when when we discuss what
- 34:16Speaker 1: you're doing. I wanted to do first explain to everybody
- 34:18Speaker 1: what you do, and then we're gonna talk about how
- 34:21Speaker 1: did you get there? Yeah? Absolutely, thank you so much
- 34:24Speaker 1: for Sean. I'm currently, as you mentioned, the associated vice
- 34:27Speaker 1: president of consumer Media at Blackty. So what does that mean.
- 34:30Speaker 1: That means basically, I leave all of the content strategy
- 34:33Speaker 1: for our commerce and when you're talking about shoppable content,
- 34:36Speaker 1: things that you see online on our website, as well
- 34:39Speaker 1: as content that includes lifestyle trending topical stories for our brands,
- 34:44Speaker 1: which include travel, New Hours, that's our vacation brand twenty
- 34:47Speaker 1: one ninety, which is like our lifestyle, beauty um wellness brand,
- 34:52Speaker 1: and then our newest brand, which just launched two months ago,
- 34:56Speaker 1: Home and Texture, which is our home to core inspiration brand.
- 35:00Speaker 1: So that's my role there at Blavity. Okay, that's your
- 35:03Speaker 1: role there at blavity. But we know you one of
- 35:07Speaker 1: these people. You you you just just as worse. I
- 35:10Speaker 1: would say worse because it's a compliment when you develop
- 35:12Speaker 1: multiple strange of income because not only that, but you're
- 35:16Speaker 1: you're also involved in slime. I feel like, who's the
- 35:22Speaker 1: leasing the secrets? Well, you know, come on, you know
- 35:27Speaker 1: the title of the show money Making Conversation Masterclass. I
- 35:30Speaker 1: bring on people who can tell you how you can
- 35:33Speaker 1: sit up here and say what do I do with
- 35:35Speaker 1: twenty four hours? You listen to my show and you
- 35:37Speaker 1: hear people tell you what you do with your twenty
- 35:39Speaker 1: four hours? So tell us about this slime in your life. Yeah,
- 35:43Speaker 1: so this is a slime that kind of started my life,
- 35:46Speaker 1: if you will. So years and years ago, I graduated
- 35:49Speaker 1: from the University of Central Florida, which is based in
- 35:52Speaker 1: Orlando where I live right and got an internship at
- 35:55Speaker 1: Nickelodeon Studios, which was based here at the time, and
- 35:58Speaker 1: they did a reboot for those back in the days
- 36:00Speaker 1: who remember Double Bear, which was like this kid's game
- 36:03Speaker 1: show that was messy like slides, gooeyiness, et cetera. And
- 36:08Speaker 1: part of my responsibilities as a intern starting out besidecraft
- 36:12Speaker 1: services that basically is like today's door Dash and we eat.
- 36:15Speaker 1: For those who don't know, I had to make slime
- 36:19Speaker 1: for the show. Okay, you know you had to make slime.
- 36:21Speaker 1: You see. I always tell people, like my first job,
- 36:23Speaker 1: my first job was unloading drugs. I tell people uloading trucks.
- 36:27Speaker 1: I realized that once they put me on the back
- 36:29Speaker 1: of a truck head at one thousand int twos or
- 36:32Speaker 1: fifty pounds each. After that job, right there, I realized,
- 36:35Speaker 1: that's not my goer, that's not my er. Now you
- 36:38Speaker 1: were doing making slime. How old do you make slime? Listen?
- 36:45Speaker 1: I don't know if I can reveal all the things,
- 36:48Speaker 1: but I will say it's all edible. And there are
- 36:50Speaker 1: two different versions at that time that they were using.
- 36:52Speaker 1: One was kind of a pudding base and one almost
- 36:55Speaker 1: like the thick apple sauce base and other ingredients to
- 36:59Speaker 1: you know, make sit together and it would go on
- 37:02Speaker 1: different slides and different cyber foam toys, etc. For the game.
- 37:06Speaker 1: But that was, yeah, that was starting out. And I
- 37:08Speaker 1: will say, like when you start out in a career
- 37:10Speaker 1: in an industry, sometimes you know, like the phone, go
- 37:13Speaker 1: start from the bottom and I will hear it. Sometimes
- 37:15Speaker 1: you have to get your foot in the door. And honestly,
- 37:19Speaker 1: it was such a cool, fun time to be in
- 37:20Speaker 1: that environment fresh out of college. I enjoyed it. But
- 37:24Speaker 1: one you didn't have to travel across country to get
- 37:28Speaker 1: into the Hollywood you were involved in in the early
- 37:31Speaker 1: stages of creativity. You see where Okay, this is how
- 37:34Speaker 1: people create content, this is how people reach a certain audience.
- 37:37Speaker 1: That was a very strong and powerful learning curve for you,
- 37:40Speaker 1: because you know, there was reaching a certain audience with
- 37:43Speaker 1: this show. Absolutely, absolutely, and I think, you know, it's
- 37:48Speaker 1: so interesting you say that. That was kind of my
- 37:50Speaker 1: first makings of like media. But then my career as
- 37:54Speaker 1: far as starting out my full time gig, did kind
- 37:57Speaker 1: of a parallel pivot. I started out full time in
- 38:00Speaker 1: TV news. So I started as an associate producer at
- 38:04Speaker 1: the ABC station here in Orlando, which means I was writing,
- 38:08Speaker 1: I was editing for various newscasts. Sometimes my shifts would
- 38:11Speaker 1: be early in the morning talking about the crocodile and
- 38:13Speaker 1: I have to get in at three am. Then sometimes
- 38:16Speaker 1: I would have to fill in at night. And then
- 38:18Speaker 1: you know, worked my ranks up. Transitioned to the NBC
- 38:22Speaker 1: station in Georgia, where I worked up the ranks to
- 38:24Speaker 1: executive producer and basically that's the person who's in charge
- 38:28Speaker 1: of all of the newscasts, creating content and storytelling. And
- 38:32Speaker 1: after about ten years into that, Rashaun, you know, I
- 38:34Speaker 1: got to the point where I loved storytelling, but I
- 38:37Speaker 1: was over breaking news time and destruction content love storytelling,
- 38:42Speaker 1: but that was no longer for me after doing it
- 38:44Speaker 1: for ten years, and so then opportunity presented itself for
- 38:48Speaker 1: me to enter this well known hospitality company to create
- 38:52Speaker 1: content from a publishing perspective, doing their digital magazines, video
- 38:57Speaker 1: content and marketing campaigns. And I did that for self
- 39:00Speaker 1: years and then that brings me to Blavity several months.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Let me just Melody now I'm talking to Melodies, associated
- 39:06Speaker 1: vice President of Continuity Media Content and Blavity. Okay, we
- 39:10Speaker 1: talked about slam because you know, I gotta bring everybody
- 39:12Speaker 1: up to speed. Anybody just rolled into this conversation. Slime,
- 39:15Speaker 1: slime and an ice machine, some story like that. We're
- 39:17Speaker 1: talking and you know what was your degree in. It
- 39:23Speaker 1: was in radio TV Communications. That was my degree from
- 39:26Speaker 1: the University of Central Florida. Okay, so but now you're
- 39:28Speaker 1: talking about you. When you was talking about marketing, you
- 39:30Speaker 1: was talking about news. So these were areas where where
- 39:33Speaker 1: they would you say, they would tie to you a
- 39:35Speaker 1: degree or you were just taking the opportunity and making
- 39:37Speaker 1: the best of it. TENA News was definitely tied to
- 39:40Speaker 1: my degree. You know, during my college years back in
- 39:43Speaker 1: the day, we would do kind of a you know,
- 39:45Speaker 1: on campus newscast, and so at the time of shown,
- 39:48Speaker 1: I was like, I want to be on air. I
- 39:50Speaker 1: want to be a reporter. I want to be an
- 39:52Speaker 1: anchor and work through that. And when the Nickelodeon's position
- 39:55Speaker 1: opportunity came for intern, I was like, oh, well, this
- 39:57Speaker 1: is another avenue to venture out. But it wasn't until
- 40:01Speaker 1: I got the position, you know, my first full time
- 40:04Speaker 1: gig as an associate producer, where I was like, you
- 40:06Speaker 1: know what, I like this writing thing. I like being
- 40:09Speaker 1: able to put news casts together, to put shows together,
- 40:13Speaker 1: to lead teams. So it changed for me. You know,
- 40:16Speaker 1: I will say one of the things for anybody who's
- 40:19Speaker 1: fresh out of college or who's either doing a trade
- 40:22Speaker 1: or looking to get into an industry, being open minded,
- 40:26Speaker 1: because here's the thing, the position or the role you
- 40:29Speaker 1: think you may want, try things out, and you may
- 40:32Speaker 1: surprise yourself and actually find out you're actually better and
- 40:35Speaker 1: blessed in another area. Right, And I've learned that, you know,
- 40:38Speaker 1: people always talk about how I do a lot of
- 40:41Speaker 1: different things. I've done a lot of different things in
- 40:43Speaker 1: my life, and I will do a lot of things
- 40:44Speaker 1: in my life. I always tell people that I give
- 40:46Speaker 1: one hundred percent when the opportunities being presented to me,
- 40:49Speaker 1: and I will pivot when an opportunity feels very comfortable
- 40:52Speaker 1: and enjoyable because I'm always intrigued. I'm always ready to
- 40:56Speaker 1: accept the challenge. And it seems to be a path
- 40:58Speaker 1: in your life. You know, you're not timidated by change,
- 41:01Speaker 1: and a lot of people are. Absolutely I think you
- 41:04Speaker 1: have to kind of go with your gut. Same reason
- 41:07Speaker 1: I said, you know after TV News love storytelling, but
- 41:09Speaker 1: I'm like, you know, this is not the type of
- 41:12Speaker 1: stories I want to tell. And then moved to hospitality
- 41:15Speaker 1: and then several months ago I foun an opportunity at Bravity.
- 41:19Speaker 1: Ain't that interests me? And even more so the fact
- 41:22Speaker 1: that the company is all in, Rashan, all in when
- 41:25Speaker 1: it comes to black and multicultural customers. You know that
- 41:29Speaker 1: sid out to me because in my twenty year career,
- 41:32Speaker 1: I've never ever worked for a company where diversity, equity
- 41:37Speaker 1: inclusion goes beyond like HR policies or social injustice moments.
- 41:42Speaker 1: That's literally Blavity's brand and it just jumps out at me,
- 41:47Speaker 1: and you know, I leased at the opportunity. I was
- 41:50Speaker 1: glad that they had me. So, as you said, you know,
- 41:52Speaker 1: my career has had different you know, paths and parallels,
- 41:56Speaker 1: all in communication or storytelling to some degree. But it's
- 41:59Speaker 1: so broad and I'm just so excited about what's still
- 42:03Speaker 1: to come with my time here at Bravity. We know,
- 42:05Speaker 1: it's really interesting because Blavity, you know, as a industry medium,
- 42:12Speaker 1: and that has a voice for us, you know, because
- 42:15Speaker 1: we realize today how important that voice plays out because
- 42:18Speaker 1: so many people are trying to shift a narrative of
- 42:20Speaker 1: what really is black culture or black history. Now, what
- 42:24Speaker 1: is the importance of your role? I know you're involved
- 42:27Speaker 1: in you know, different brands and different scales at Blavity.
- 42:31Speaker 1: What is your role when you're talking about storytelling it,
- 42:34Speaker 1: making it or think and making it accurate? I think
- 42:38Speaker 1: so my role is like listening to our customers, see
- 42:41Speaker 1: what's resonating with them, see where they are in the journey.
- 42:43Speaker 1: I think, for example, our newest brand, Home and Texture.
- 42:47Speaker 1: Sometimes we're trying what people think about millennials. So like
- 42:49Speaker 1: all they are these young kids in their twenties. No,
- 42:51Speaker 1: millennials are straight up mid thirties plus early forties. They're
- 42:56Speaker 1: setting up roots, they're becoming entrepreneurs, they're buying homes, they're traveling,
- 43:03Speaker 1: they're interested about their health and wellness. And so those
- 43:07Speaker 1: are the pieces of content and the storytelling that I
- 43:10Speaker 1: want to tell for our audience, Like where are they
- 43:13Speaker 1: in the various funnels of journey. Also, black and multicultural folks,
- 43:18Speaker 1: We're not monolithic, We're not the same. There's some folks.
- 43:22Speaker 1: Even when you talk about home right home ownership, that
- 43:25Speaker 1: can be a condo, that could be a remodeled home,
- 43:29Speaker 1: that could be a new spec home, that can be
- 43:32Speaker 1: an apartment. Like there's different variables and variations to what
- 43:37Speaker 1: it means to set up routes in your home. And
- 43:39Speaker 1: those are the stories who want to tap into. Absolutely
- 43:43Speaker 1: when we come back, I want to talk about more
- 43:44Speaker 1: in the travel aspect because I think that's where the
- 43:46Speaker 1: African American community has grown so much and travel because
- 43:51Speaker 1: any know, I grew up in the era you know
- 43:52Speaker 1: you're hopping the back of the car with mom music,
- 43:53Speaker 1: go down to your cousins in the next state, and
- 43:56Speaker 1: that was your vacation or that was your extent of traveling. Well,
- 43:58Speaker 1: we're world travelers now in the African American community of
- 44:01Speaker 1: community of color. We'll come back. We'll asked Melanie about that,
- 44:04Speaker 1: and we also talk about the home and texture why
- 44:06Speaker 1: that brand is so special. Be right back with more
- 44:08Speaker 1: money Making Conversations Masterclass with the Queen. I had the
- 44:11Speaker 1: Queen of talk show. Now I got the Queen of Blavity,
- 44:13Speaker 1: Melanie the Princess. But we'll be right back with the
- 44:21Speaker 1: Princess O Blavity Melanie Brown. Please don't go anywhere. We'll
- 44:28Speaker 1: be right back with more money Making Conversations Masterclass. Let
- 44:32Speaker 1: me tell you about the host of Money Making Conversations,
- 44:35Speaker 1: Rushan McDonald. He's a social media influencer. Eighty percent of
- 44:39Speaker 1: his one million plus social media followers are female. Rushawn's
- 44:43Speaker 1: a two time Emmy Award winner, three time in Double
- 44:46Speaker 1: ACP Immage Award winner, sitcom writer, stand up comic, and
- 44:50Speaker 1: former IBM executive, and he has a degree in mathematics.
- 44:54Speaker 1: More importantly, Rushan McDonald will interview his business and celebrity
- 44:58Speaker 1: relationships to him, how are you with tips to succeed
- 45:01Speaker 1: in your career that you can only hear in the
- 45:04Speaker 1: Money Making Conversations Masterclass show. Welcome back to the Money
- 45:09Speaker 1: Making Conversations Masterclass hosted by Rashan Sean McDonald. Welcome back
- 45:13Speaker 1: to Money Making Conversation Masterclass. You know, oh, you know,
- 45:16Speaker 1: they always try to hype yourself off, trying to hype
- 45:18Speaker 1: your show off, trying to make it, you know, as
- 45:20Speaker 1: big as as possible. So I got the Queen and
- 45:22Speaker 1: the Princess on my show today. The Queen of Daytime
- 45:24Speaker 1: talks the Princess of Levity. Now, when I talk about
- 45:28Speaker 1: the Levity, I'm talking about an e commerce brand that
- 45:31Speaker 1: is totally focused on the African American community from the
- 45:33Speaker 1: standpoint of travel as far as Home and Texture. Talk
- 45:37Speaker 1: to us about that brand and what makes that so special,
- 45:39Speaker 1: and then we're going to go back to travel, Okay, sure, sure,
- 45:43Speaker 1: So in talking about Home and Texture, you know, it's
- 45:46Speaker 1: about our community. The brand launched two months ago, and
- 45:49Speaker 1: we know the home buying and designing industry generates millions
- 45:54Speaker 1: rashan upon millions of dollars, but none of that goes
- 45:56Speaker 1: really all in for us, right, So when we're talking
- 45:59Speaker 1: about homeowners, home seekers and designers and that demographic is
- 46:03Speaker 1: setting up roots. It's one of the reasons we chose
- 46:06Speaker 1: to have the Homo Texture launch party event and it
- 46:09Speaker 1: landed at the Garden Room last month. When you talk
- 46:11Speaker 1: about the black home buying journey, the ATAIL is one
- 46:14Speaker 1: of the city's experiencing significant growth. Plus, not only is
- 46:18Speaker 1: this branch here information that's really unique to our community.
- 46:20Speaker 1: So whether it's disparities and mortgage lending, how to embrace
- 46:24Speaker 1: your personal file and culture, you know, and bring light
- 46:27Speaker 1: to your space, but also given a platform to entrepreneurs
- 46:31Speaker 1: in this space. So Rashan Will, we're talking about real
- 46:33Speaker 1: estate agents and designers. Matter of fact, today we just
- 46:36Speaker 1: launched our social first series called Homo Texture House Tours,
- 46:39Speaker 1: which is so amazing. It features four fabulous designers from
- 46:43Speaker 1: the Memphis area showcasing their homes and so for listeners
- 46:47Speaker 1: listening who want to check that out, go to Homo
- 46:49Speaker 1: Texture dot com. But what I'm excited about this brand
- 46:52Speaker 1: is that it's showing how we are building equity as
- 46:56Speaker 1: a community. Wow. You know, I tend to believe like
- 47:01Speaker 1: I've been in the person who has been been in
- 47:03Speaker 1: the home buying industry. I've been out there trying to
- 47:07Speaker 1: buy the right furniture, trying to get to the right
- 47:09Speaker 1: as contractor trying to But then when you look at
- 47:12Speaker 1: TV these uh do it yourself shows our vision of
- 47:16Speaker 1: our colors and always showcase what what what what role?
- 47:21Speaker 1: And why is That's why there's such a popularity, there's
- 47:24Speaker 1: such a need for what you We launched just two
- 47:26Speaker 1: months ago. Yes, we saw that it was definitely an
- 47:30Speaker 1: empty space. You know, we talk about Blavity, the Queen
- 47:33Speaker 1: of Blavity. She'd probably you know, disagree with me, but
- 47:36Speaker 1: I think she is is morted to bond our CEO.
- 47:39Speaker 1: She is so forthinking as well as our executives about
- 47:44Speaker 1: where can we spread our blravity ache influence right. And
- 47:48Speaker 1: we saw the need um. You know, I mentioned earlier
- 47:51Speaker 1: for those destroying the conversation that when you're talking about millennials,
- 47:55Speaker 1: they're not babies. These are folks who are making money,
- 47:58Speaker 1: good money right, who are looking to buy homes, who
- 48:01Speaker 1: are looking to even buy second homes, right investment homes.
- 48:05Speaker 1: And we feel like there needs to be an avenue
- 48:07Speaker 1: in a vehicle to them or vehicle for them, and
- 48:10Speaker 1: not just how they design their home, but even the
- 48:12Speaker 1: nuances of insurance. You know, one of the stories I tell,
- 48:16Speaker 1: you know, my team members is like when me and
- 48:18Speaker 1: my husband bought our home. You know, it's little things.
- 48:20Speaker 1: We had all of these windows. I'm like, oh, we
- 48:23Speaker 1: need curtains and window treatments, like the defense from large
- 48:27Speaker 1: to insurance and lending to kind of those you know,
- 48:30Speaker 1: smaller things that you don't speak about, and we're trying
- 48:33Speaker 1: to fill that space because there's obviously a need for
- 48:35Speaker 1: it with this demographic. Well, you know, it's really interesting
- 48:38Speaker 1: because you know, you learned so much about home buying
- 48:41Speaker 1: and you know, like all African Americans, I started in
- 48:44Speaker 1: my little apartment. I remember our very first apartment. It
- 48:47Speaker 1: was kind of like a studio, had their little wall.
- 48:49Speaker 1: It wasn't really one bid room because if you looked around,
- 48:52Speaker 1: the wall didn't have a door. But I was happy
- 48:54Speaker 1: in my little seven hundred graph feed them. I was
- 48:56Speaker 1: I was rocking and rolling in there was doors, it
- 48:58Speaker 1: was mine. It was mine, you know, technically in rent
- 49:01Speaker 1: it was mine. And then what did you realize is
- 49:04Speaker 1: that we are renting all the time. And really, when
- 49:07Speaker 1: you do the math and you take care of your credit,
- 49:10Speaker 1: then you can become take that rent and turn it
- 49:12Speaker 1: into a mortgage and then you have equity. And that's
- 49:15Speaker 1: the part of the conversation that I really love about
- 49:18Speaker 1: when you talk about home and texture, because it educates
- 49:22Speaker 1: a process to you that you may not be thinking about.
- 49:25Speaker 1: And it's also when you talk about millennials. I think
- 49:28Speaker 1: the media has has time time trapped millennials to some
- 49:33Speaker 1: twenty five that's twenty seven year old person who who
- 49:36Speaker 1: wants to skip the line and wants to wants to what,
- 49:40Speaker 1: don't want to work hard. That's what the millennials have
- 49:42Speaker 1: been trapped into. That world. Like you said, excuse me,
- 49:44Speaker 1: that's not us. That's not us. With homebuyers, you know,
- 49:48Speaker 1: we buy stock. We were about our retirement and we
- 49:51Speaker 1: make a contribution to society. And that's that's the stereotype
- 49:55Speaker 1: that you're denouncing right now, and you're doing a very
- 49:57Speaker 1: good job of it. But another stereotype that you're denouncing,
- 50:00Speaker 1: it's the whole travel concept because people like me. I'm
- 50:04Speaker 1: older than you, so I know the traditional travel that
- 50:07Speaker 1: we used to do. And in the Europe travel wasn't
- 50:11Speaker 1: part of my mantra. Going out of town, the Cancoon
- 50:15Speaker 1: wasn't part of the Jamaica wasn't part of it. But
- 50:17Speaker 1: now it's part of the regular routine. What excites you
- 50:21Speaker 1: about that growing or very explosive component of your brand.
- 50:26Speaker 1: You know, I think everything I mean in full transparency
- 50:29Speaker 1: was Shawn like our vacations where at the time I
- 50:32Speaker 1: lived in New York was taking a road trip down
- 50:34Speaker 1: South South Carolina to visit family, which you know I
- 50:39Speaker 1: loved at the time. But now when you look at travel, yes,
- 50:42Speaker 1: people want these international experiences, especially now post COVID people
- 50:46Speaker 1: are trying to fly and get away. But also what
- 50:49Speaker 1: we're finding out with our blivity audience, particularly for travel
- 50:53Speaker 1: new are for that brand, is that they also want
- 50:57Speaker 1: unique experiences where they don't feel like a tourist. Right,
- 51:00Speaker 1: So when somebody's traveling, whether it's going to DC, they
- 51:04Speaker 1: don't want to go to eight chain restaurants. They want
- 51:07Speaker 1: to have that localized experience where they feel like they're
- 51:11Speaker 1: really being part of the community there. Yes, they like luxury,
- 51:16Speaker 1: they like the finer things. And even when those who
- 51:19Speaker 1: want to road trip, like I said, black and multicultural
- 51:22Speaker 1: are demographic's not monolithic. So one of the franchises that
- 51:25Speaker 1: we're looking at is hidden Jams. So these are those
- 51:28Speaker 1: unique destinations, whether it's going to New Mexico going up
- 51:32Speaker 1: to Montana, that are very unique and also where black
- 51:35Speaker 1: and multiculturals feel they can be their authentic self. You know,
- 51:39Speaker 1: The interesting thing about when I hear you talk about travel,
- 51:43Speaker 1: and this is a little note about me. I used
- 51:44Speaker 1: to be I should do stand up and lets you
- 51:46Speaker 1: just stand up on cruise ships. I've done performing the
- 51:49Speaker 1: problem eight different cruise ships, eighty different eighty different cruise ships.
- 51:52Speaker 1: And it was always funny because from from like September
- 51:56Speaker 1: to April, the audience I had performing in front was white.
- 52:01Speaker 1: When it got made to September, the cruise ship was
- 52:06Speaker 1: predominantly black. I don't care if it was I don't
- 52:08Speaker 1: care where Cruise Live was Norwegian, it was Raw Caribbean
- 52:11Speaker 1: that those are the two out dominantly performed on. But
- 52:14Speaker 1: it was always let me know that the black culture
- 52:17Speaker 1: was very seasonal, very summer oriented when we did our
- 52:20Speaker 1: vacation and with Blavity, you're starting to open up those
- 52:23Speaker 1: change as we wrapped this interview, and I want to
- 52:25Speaker 1: tell you thank you for coming on the show. How
- 52:27Speaker 1: can we get in touch with you? How can we
