- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In Luke chapter 6, we hear
- 0:45another version of what has become known as the Beatitudes.
- 0:48These are the Blessed are you verses that Jesus teaches.
- 0:52Listen to a few of them here in this chapter.
- 0:55Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the Kingdom of God.
- 0:59Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied.
- 1:03Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
- 1:05Blessed are you when men hate you and ostracize you and insult
- 1:09you and scorn your name as evil for the sake of the Son of Man.
- 1:13Now the reason we call these verses beatitudes is because of
- 1:16that word blessed that keeps appearing.
- 1:19The Latin word beatitus is an adjective meaning blessed.
- 1:22So that's where the name comes from.
- 1:24Here's the thing, blessed is a word that has become such an
- 1:27ingrained part of our church jargon in the English language
- 1:30that it's easy to miss the point here.
- 1:33The more common definition of that Latin adjective beatitus is
- 1:37not blessed, but happy. Happy.
- 1:40Take another listen to these verses we just read.
- 1:43But let's put that word happy in place of blessed.
- 1:46Happy are you who are poor, for yours is the Kingdom of God.
- 1:50Happy are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied.
- 1:54Happy are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
- 1:57Happy are you when men hate you and ostracize you and insult you
- 2:01and scorn your name is evil for the sake of the Son of Man.
- 2:04Now I have wept before, and I'm not sure that happy is how I
- 2:09would have described myself. I've been insulted and scorned.
- 2:12Again, not sure happy is the adjective I would have used to
- 2:16describe how I was feeling. So what is going on here?
- 2:19How can Jesus, with a straight face tell us happiness is found
- 2:23in rejection and hunger and pain?
- 2:26What Jesus is giving us in this passage are rules for living.
- 2:31But not just rules for living, rules for flourishing.
- 2:34He is showing us what the path of true joy, of true happiness,
- 2:39looks like. But these rules for living and
- 2:42flourishing go far beyond the temporal world that we live in.
- 2:45Jesus is outlining for us the eternal, the abundant life, the
- 2:49rules of living for his eternal Kingdom.
- 2:52Remember Hebrews 11, the hall of faith that lists out the faith
- 2:56filled acts of many Old Testament Saints?
- 2:59Listen to a short passage from that chapter and I think you'll
- 3:01get what's going on here. In Luke chapter 6 it says all
- 3:05these died in faith without receiving the promises, but
- 3:08having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance,
- 3:11and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the
- 3:14earth. For those who say such things
- 3:16make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own.
- 3:19And indeed, if they had been thinking of that country from
- 3:21which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return.
- 3:25But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a
- 3:28heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to
- 3:31be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.
- 3:35These men and women desired a better country.
- 3:38They lived as strangers and exiles on the earth because they
- 3:41were not seeking to be satisfied by the time they spent on this
- 3:44earth, but rather to be satisfied by God Himself
- 3:48forever. And listen, they are tasting it
- 3:52and will taste it in full at the return of Christ.
- 3:54That better country is coming for them and for us.
- 3:59And so we take our place behind these Saints, seeking a country
- 4:03of our own, a better country, a heavenly country.
- 4:07And when we are mistreated and mocked and insulted and scorned
- 4:11and left hungry and beaten down by the world for the sake of
- 4:14Christ, we can smile, we can be happy, we can count ourselves
- 4:20blessed because we are moving closer and closer to that better
- 4:24country, God's country, where sin and death and crying are no
- 4:28more and Jesus is King forever.
