- 1:10Speaker 1: at the Black College Expo. We're just walking around with
- 1:13Speaker 1: my program director Adele and uh. We saw her and
- 1:17Speaker 1: she had a booth set up and she was marketing
- 1:19Speaker 1: her wares to the college crowd, the high schoolers who
- 1:21Speaker 1: about to go to call, letting them know. And that's
- 1:23Speaker 1: what you have to do as an entrepreneur. She's a
- 1:26Speaker 1: licensed real estate agent in Texas for more than twenty years.
- 1:29Speaker 1: She also owns, as we said, owner and designed a
- 1:31Speaker 1: lofty bed skirts. That's what she had at the college
- 1:34Speaker 1: Expo in Atlanta, Georgia. So she's used it, so she
- 1:37Speaker 1: was in the Atlanta marketing this. It's a simple new
- 1:40Speaker 1: twist on a classic accessory. Her bed skirts will hire
- 1:43Speaker 1: college dum room clutter underneath the bed. What sets Lofty
- 1:47Speaker 1: bed skirts apart is the patent of twelve panel design
- 1:51Speaker 1: that not only conceals but allows for easy access. She
- 1:54Speaker 1: showed that to me too. Let me show you the patent.
- 1:56Speaker 1: She flipped it back and flipped it back and went,
- 1:59Speaker 1: WHOA I did? I did that band of white will
- 2:01Speaker 1: oh and uh, this US pattern was approved in December,
- 2:06Speaker 1: So don't go out there and steal it. This lady
- 2:08Speaker 1: has her think patent and it's been patented and Lofty
- 2:11Speaker 1: Best Skirts. It's also available online Police Work on the
- 2:15Speaker 1: Money Making Conversation Xena Bussade. You know I laid you
- 2:22Speaker 1: out in that interview and that in the intro. I
- 2:24Speaker 1: know that. I know that because you are a business
- 2:27Speaker 1: entrepreneur and people need to know who you are. And
- 2:30Speaker 1: I've learned that. You know, I met you. I met
- 2:33Speaker 1: you and um Atlanta and you were selling your your
- 2:37Speaker 1: bed skirts and it's called why how did this idea
- 2:41Speaker 1: come about? And I'm gonna let you know that by
- 2:43Speaker 1: broadcast on Serious XM Channel one for the one which
- 2:46Speaker 1: is Howard University, and also broadcast on Serious XM Channel
- 2:50Speaker 1: one for the two which HBCU campuses. So know that
- 2:53Speaker 1: your audience that you're trying to sell to is listening.
- 2:56Speaker 1: And also I'm also you know, Busy Love of Naty
- 2:59Speaker 1: as well as a podcast, so the mama's and papa's
- 3:02Speaker 1: listening to. So do your things. So this shows about you.
- 3:04Speaker 1: This your opportunity to put your put your put your stamp,
- 3:08Speaker 1: as they said, the stamp on all lofty bed skirts.
- 3:12Speaker 1: And let me let you know that as we speak,
- 3:14Speaker 1: I am at the University of Houston, which I believe
- 3:16Speaker 1: is your all. My moms, we just get around. We
- 3:20Speaker 1: just get around. Now, what you're going over Universe Houston?
- 3:23Speaker 1: What's happening over there? They have their new student orientations
- 3:26Speaker 1: this morning, So again I am here with my UH
- 3:29Speaker 1: display set up and and have information available for all
- 3:34Speaker 1: the students as they come in as they get ready
- 3:37Speaker 1: for their new activities and called careers for the two
- 3:41Speaker 1: thousand eighteen for a year. But let me tell you
- 3:44Speaker 1: how I got this started back in two thousand and
- 3:47Speaker 1: eight when my daughter began college at Sam Houston University.
- 3:52Speaker 1: You know, as a proud parent, I'm all excited. Like
- 3:54Speaker 1: most proud parents, we have no idea what all they
- 3:56Speaker 1: need and start school, and we us have visit her
- 4:00Speaker 1: dorm room. And the dorm rooms of course are very small,
- 4:05Speaker 1: but they're not designed to house everything that the kids
- 4:08Speaker 1: have at home. So there you need uh. The beds
- 4:11Speaker 1: are just thirty four inches in height, allow for storage underneath,
- 4:16Speaker 1: but yourt typical bed skirt does not conceal, doesn't go
- 4:21Speaker 1: to the floor. So all the things that your kids
- 4:23Speaker 1: are are forced to put under that bed to hide
- 4:27Speaker 1: or the store as exposed to their roommates whoever might
- 4:31Speaker 1: come visit, or what have you now? And also the students,
- 4:36Speaker 1: you know, all that things that are exposed, and you
- 4:38Speaker 1: can't concentrate on your studies because you've got all this
- 4:41Speaker 1: jook and all this clutter. So our bed skirts are
- 4:43Speaker 1: designed to go to the floor. I designed this for
- 4:45Speaker 1: my door in two thousand eight when she went to school,
- 4:48Speaker 1: So when usually designed. Okay, let's slow down there. What
- 4:51Speaker 1: is your design? What is what? How do you design
- 4:53Speaker 1: something for your daughter? You know, or you or you
- 4:56Speaker 1: your your seamstress or you know somebody who can sew?
- 4:59Speaker 1: How did that come about? Now? I'm not a sametres,
- 5:02Speaker 1: but I can throw a straight line. So I made hers,
- 5:06Speaker 1: you know, I made hers for her, and what you know,
- 5:09Speaker 1: God gave me the vision of the best skirt, you know,
- 5:12Speaker 1: going to the floor. But not only does the best
- 5:14Speaker 1: skirt go to the floor, it has five panels on
- 5:17Speaker 1: each end because I wanted her to be able to
- 5:19Speaker 1: get to her things that were stored under the bed,
- 5:22Speaker 1: you know, quick and easy because you're running in got
- 5:24Speaker 1: to run out to go to class without lessening up
- 5:26Speaker 1: the whole entower beds right because you know, you didn't
- 5:28Speaker 1: want to just just flip one massive flip over. You're
- 5:31Speaker 1: not to worry about you just look on what raise
- 5:33Speaker 1: one pound, ain't there? Pound, ain't there? Raise the middle pound?
- 5:37Speaker 1: There you go, there you go. Whether it's something at
- 5:40Speaker 1: the end of the bed or the middle of the
- 5:41Speaker 1: bed or the head of the bed, doesn't matter where
- 5:43Speaker 1: you need to get to. You can get to it
- 5:45Speaker 1: quick and easy and grab it and run out the
- 5:47Speaker 1: room and go to class. Okay, that's for your daughter.
- 5:50Speaker 1: When did you get to a point you said, you
- 5:51Speaker 1: know something, I could probably make some money with this
- 5:54Speaker 1: because you you know your real estate person, you know,
- 5:56Speaker 1: being out there twenty years and so you're not to
- 5:58Speaker 1: a salesperson. You're now at a salesperson. You got that instinct.
- 6:02Speaker 1: So tell me about that next step. Tell our listeners
- 6:04Speaker 1: to understand just the entrepreneurship side of you coming out.
- 6:08Speaker 1: My daughter just had let me know how many of
- 6:11Speaker 1: her you know, college friends had liked it, and you know,
- 6:15Speaker 1: and they wanted to know how they could get one,
- 6:18Speaker 1: and I was like, okay, this could this could happen.
- 6:25Speaker 1: You know. But the one thing that I also understood
- 6:28Speaker 1: being going into business, that this wasn't rocket science. This
- 6:32Speaker 1: is a very simple pattern. So the first thing that
- 6:35Speaker 1: I did was consult with a patent attorney, and I
- 6:40Speaker 1: got it patented because I didn't want it to get
- 6:43Speaker 1: out there and grow. And then you know, a major
- 6:47Speaker 1: corporation say you know what, that will work and mass
- 6:49Speaker 1: produce it. Hey not this a major but but homie
- 6:53Speaker 1: homie and Homie Momi too. Sitting right next to you,
- 6:55Speaker 1: going I'm the I'm the real lofty bed skirts and
- 7:01Speaker 1: you're mad because you didn't do your business Because I
- 7:03Speaker 1: want people to do that. So many people jump out there.
- 7:07Speaker 1: They jump out there. They got a great sandwich. They
- 7:09Speaker 1: just started selling the sandwich. And here as you had
- 7:11Speaker 1: a great ideas to look at before I get out
- 7:13Speaker 1: there and start rolling the people, snap a picture of
- 7:16Speaker 1: what you're doing. And there's people just still. People need
- 7:19Speaker 1: to know. People will still. That's why you have a
- 7:22Speaker 1: long that's why you have the police. People still. So
- 7:25Speaker 1: continue with your story. Well, you know, like you said,
- 7:29Speaker 1: you don't want anybody else to take your idea still
- 7:31Speaker 1: your dream, So you gotta do your homework. So you know,
- 7:34Speaker 1: I got the pattenting, I got to LLLC and I
- 7:37Speaker 1: got you know, I got everything in line. I got
- 7:39Speaker 1: the business plan done. I got everything in line. So
- 7:41Speaker 1: then when I stepped out there, I stepped out there, right,
- 7:45Speaker 1: you have to be correct. Okay, okay, with that being said, Okay,
- 7:48Speaker 1: let's let's do two thousand and eight. Okay, two thousand eight,
- 7:51Speaker 1: you took your daughter to college. Two thousand fifteen, you've
- 7:55Speaker 1: had it patented. What exactly is the patent process? What
- 7:59Speaker 1: is that problem? I hear at all the time people
- 8:01Speaker 1: are asking me about pat How do you go through
- 8:03Speaker 1: the step? Because that's not something that happens overnight. What
- 8:06Speaker 1: are the steps in the in the frustration you had
- 8:08Speaker 1: to go with a deal with and patenting lofty bed
- 8:11Speaker 1: skirts the What I recommend anybody to do when they're
- 8:17Speaker 1: looking into getting a patent is to hire a patent
- 8:19Speaker 1: to turn it because that is a very specialized situation
- 8:23Speaker 1: and it takes about two years. It's not something you're
- 8:25Speaker 1: gonna start today. It's gonna happen tomorrow. You need to
- 8:28Speaker 1: be patient. That's a two year process. The first thing
- 8:31Speaker 1: that we did is we looked into we had to
- 8:34Speaker 1: verify that this was original, that there wasn't something else
- 8:38Speaker 1: out there. So he you know, went to the patent
- 8:42Speaker 1: office and pulled up different patents, patents that were already
- 8:46Speaker 1: out there for bed skirts, and I was, yeah, I
- 8:50Speaker 1: was amazed at how many patents they're already are out
- 8:55Speaker 1: there just the bed skirts along. Well, you know, you know,
- 8:59Speaker 1: everybody basically has a kind of like a skirt. You know,
- 9:02Speaker 1: you can buy it, you know, But George, we're different
- 9:04Speaker 1: with you had these panels. So that's a different because
- 9:07Speaker 1: because I know my bed, I have a little skirt.
- 9:10Speaker 1: If I don't want to people to see the dust
- 9:12Speaker 1: undneath my bed, I just hide it with that bed skirt.
- 9:14Speaker 1: And so unless I have to go down there, you know,
- 9:16Speaker 1: to put the broom under there and move all that
- 9:18Speaker 1: dust and stuff like that. That's most people do with
- 9:20Speaker 1: the bed skirt. But you had panels that separated you. Correct,
- 9:24Speaker 1: That is correct. That's what made different. That's what nobody
- 9:27Speaker 1: else has out there, and that's what makes lofty bed
- 9:31Speaker 1: skirts unique. Now, with that, with that being said, once
- 9:36Speaker 1: the goal with lofty bed skirts. I met you in Atlanta,
- 9:39Speaker 1: you know at the Black College Expo this morning, you're
- 9:41Speaker 1: at the University Houston main campus. Is uh, you know
- 9:44Speaker 1: my daughter, she might run into her because she's doing
- 9:47Speaker 1: summer school and so and she needs to because I
- 9:51Speaker 1: I never went in a dorm room, you know. You know,
- 9:53Speaker 1: it's the first year at the Universe Houston and I
- 9:55Speaker 1: never went up there. I probably went, what is going
- 9:58Speaker 1: on underneath that bed? I'm pretty That's how I am.
- 10:01Speaker 1: So so I will be I will be telling her
- 10:03Speaker 1: to get a lofty bed skirt because I just know
- 10:06Speaker 1: my daughter and I know how college dorms look, because
- 10:09Speaker 1: I just feel that it's just a neat way to
- 10:11Speaker 1: keep everything neat and keep everything personal because because the
- 10:15Speaker 1: thing about it is that if you come in your
- 10:17Speaker 1: dorm room and you see somebody lifting one of your panels,
- 10:20Speaker 1: you're gonna go, what's going on? What's going right now?
- 10:23Speaker 1: The the and the you know, your basic best way,
- 10:26Speaker 1: Like I said, it's usually two up to four tenches
- 10:28Speaker 1: in length, and it's not going to go on to
- 10:30Speaker 1: the full thirty four inches, and our our bed skirt does.
- 10:33Speaker 1: And the wonderful thing about lofty bedskirt or you know,
- 10:38Speaker 1: was college most college dorms across the country have the
- 10:43Speaker 1: adjustable hight beds, which go up at thirty four inches
- 10:46Speaker 1: UM in length. Like I said, they're designed to store
- 10:49Speaker 1: things underneath. Uh and and lofty is gonna be able
- 10:52Speaker 1: to provide you, um you're privacy, you know, keep keep
- 10:58Speaker 1: other people out of what seem was you got under there.
- 11:01Speaker 1: They're gonna conceal it. They're gonna have your room looking
- 11:04Speaker 1: nice and neat with all the exposed You're gonna be
- 11:07Speaker 1: able to study and concentrate because you have to look
- 11:10Speaker 1: at all that stuff something of the bed it has.
- 11:12Speaker 1: And it's also fashionable. I mean if this makes your
- 11:15Speaker 1: room look good and makes your your whole your bedding
- 11:18Speaker 1: look perfect, you know what you need to do. You
- 11:20Speaker 1: need to get with them Greek organizations, you know the
- 11:22Speaker 1: A k A. I'm just gonna fraternity. They don't know
- 11:25Speaker 1: by nothing but for soritis. They are going to do that.
- 11:28Speaker 1: But also it's important that if you can create these
- 11:31Speaker 1: relationships with these colleges that you can get into their
- 11:34Speaker 1: their magazines that allow this that this I recommend this.
- 11:37Speaker 1: I recommend this. And also you're probably already thinking about this.
- 11:41Speaker 1: You know, college logos getting those Alabama. That's the next
- 11:47Speaker 1: step in that world that you're in. That's the next
- 11:50Speaker 1: step for you and I and I know you're small,
- 11:52Speaker 1: and I'm just throwing out what Rashawn knows and what
- 11:55Speaker 1: shad because because if you go to University of Alabama
- 11:59Speaker 1: with these law the bread bad loss, and you you
- 12:02Speaker 1: secure the licensees degreement, those things are gonna fly off
- 12:05Speaker 1: to shall because that's just cute. That's just that's just fashionable.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Same thing with the same thing with you know, Georgia,
- 12:11Speaker 1: I'm talking about. It's same parts of the country where
- 12:13Speaker 1: people are just amazingly loyal. But I'm just gonna tell
- 12:16Speaker 1: you the saltheast part of this country Tennessee, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Alabama, Georgia,
- 12:22Speaker 1: all of the schools over there, they're just crazy about
- 12:25Speaker 1: each other. So I want to I want to bring
- 12:27Speaker 1: you back. I want to I want to be I'm
- 12:29Speaker 1: a fan of what you're doing because you're a young entrepreneur.
