- 1:34Speaker 1: how are you doing? Hey' Was that enough hype for you,
- 1:36Speaker 1: Rodney that he did a good job. Here's just there. Man.
- 1:43Speaker 1: You you you're a superstar and I gotta treat you
- 1:45Speaker 1: like that. Man. But you know, people see you with
- 1:47Speaker 1: that helping on, they just think you out there tackling people,
- 1:49Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. But you know you've got
- 1:51Speaker 1: a lot going on in your life, man, I want
- 1:53Speaker 1: to talk about it on the show. And uh and really, man,
- 1:56Speaker 1: it's it's just amazing to see your story because you
- 2:00Speaker 1: I'm from one of the story I say story that's
- 2:02Speaker 1: the legendary high schools in America called the Matha in Maryland. Man,
- 2:09Speaker 1: let me just run off when I say legendary high school,
- 2:11Speaker 1: the Matha Catholic High School. Let me some of the
- 2:14Speaker 1: famous people from there. Markale, folks, if you don't know him,
- 2:17Speaker 1: he is the first pick in the NFL in the
- 2:19Speaker 1: NBA draft last year, Victor Oladipot. He was a number
- 2:23Speaker 1: two pick in the NBA draft. Legendary age, big booty,
- 2:28Speaker 1: that late boy. He backed down. Boy, you couldn't get
- 2:31Speaker 1: around him. James Brown, that's my boy. Hosted the NFL today.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Cameron Wake. He dominated the CFL. Now he dominated down
- 2:40Speaker 1: in Miami. Dolphin David Aldrich. If you don't know Davis,
- 2:43Speaker 1: you don't follow NBA. My man, I had to grab
- 2:46Speaker 1: this personal Clifton Pile actor friend. That's my boy. Danny
- 2:50Speaker 1: Ferry and the drum roll. Rodney McCleod, man brother, you'll
- 2:59Speaker 1: know all down there in the Matha. Yet, Rodney, they
- 3:02Speaker 1: got you on their man. Man, you know what I'm saying.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Right now? They got my picture up, you know, up
- 3:07Speaker 1: in the weight room. But you know, I think they're
- 3:09Speaker 1: gonna do give me a little in dusty um. That's
- 3:13Speaker 1: what I'm hoping soon, you know, especially now that I
- 3:15Speaker 1: got that Super Bowl champ tack to me. But it's
- 3:19Speaker 1: really a man to you know, uh be represented, um,
- 3:24Speaker 1: you know, represent the Matha. And you just listened off
- 3:27Speaker 1: you know a lot of amazing guys, um and they're
- 3:30Speaker 1: all especially in some way that I've come to the Matha.
- 3:32Speaker 1: So it's just an honored man to to hopefully you
- 3:35Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, Uh, be up on the wall
- 3:38Speaker 1: beside those guys. That's just a few. That's just a few.
- 3:43Speaker 1: If anybody google, the Matha Catholic High School is in
- 3:46Speaker 1: Maryland and you will see I. I just you know,
- 3:49Speaker 1: this interview about Rodney. I ain't got time to be
- 3:51Speaker 1: listening to all the stars in the came from this
- 3:53Speaker 1: high school, and right, I want to talk about your story. Man.
- 3:55Speaker 1: First of all, I want to reading your bio. My
- 3:58Speaker 1: minor is sociology. My degree in mathematic but my mind
- 4:02Speaker 1: and sociology. Your degree in sociology. So immediately you were
- 4:07Speaker 1: my man, Oh yeah, yes, sir, yes, sir, so I
- 4:11Speaker 1: a degree in sociology. Why degree in sociology at the
- 4:13Speaker 1: University of Virginia. Uh man, I mean honestly being an
- 4:18Speaker 1: athlete a Virginia. It's hard to be able to balance,
- 4:21Speaker 1: you know, the school aspect um, going to class every day, Um,
- 4:26Speaker 1: the workload, um, you know, tied in with um, you
- 4:30Speaker 1: know what my job is, which is going out, you know,
- 4:32Speaker 1: practicing and and and maka Sean, I'm preparing on Saturday.
- 4:35Speaker 1: So um, you know, I've kind of had three options.
- 4:38Speaker 1: I was kind of leaning towards sociology, psychology, anthropology. So um,
- 4:44Speaker 1: I end up going with sociologists because I was just
- 4:46Speaker 1: a lot more There's a lot of interested uh more
- 4:49Speaker 1: interested in in that field and the classes. It is
- 4:53Speaker 1: an amazing degree. It's an amazing degree. Man. Uh yeah,
- 4:57Speaker 1: My my degree is a mathematic but b to do
- 5:00Speaker 1: it all again, it will be a sociology because it
- 5:01Speaker 1: just taught me so much about people and how people interactive.
- 5:05Speaker 1: And also I learned so much about what I didn't
- 5:07Speaker 1: learn in high school, how much they deny you information.
- 5:10Speaker 1: It was almost it was a ground baking, uh decision
- 5:14Speaker 1: for me to do and go into those classes, and
- 5:16Speaker 1: I just soaked them up. Man. So when I saw
- 5:18Speaker 1: that you, I knew that right right along. You have
- 5:20Speaker 1: a degree in sociology. You have a strong awareness about
- 5:23Speaker 1: this country, about social issues and uh, and things that
- 5:27Speaker 1: concerned everyday people that a lot of people just kind
- 5:29Speaker 1: of disregard. That's what sociology brings to the table exactly.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Now let's talk about you and you're you're a football player, okay,
- 5:38Speaker 1: and you went to the University of Virginia and you're
- 5:40Speaker 1: playing safety and cornerback in college. Correct? Correct? Okay, So
- 5:45Speaker 1: draft is coming up, Draft is coming up. Did you
- 5:48Speaker 1: expect to get drafted because you went into the NFL
- 5:51Speaker 1: as a free agent undrafted free agent? Yeah, so, Um,
- 5:56Speaker 1: there was a lot of speculation on the weather not
- 6:00Speaker 1: um I would be drafted or not they're projecting me
- 6:03Speaker 1: um or you know, late to uh possibly priority free agents. Um.
- 6:09Speaker 1: So going through the whole process, Man, it was fun.
- 6:11Speaker 1: I I enjoyed it. Uh. You know, I think my goal,
- 6:15Speaker 1: you know, as a child, uh was always to hear
- 6:18Speaker 1: my name, you know, get called. You know what I'm
- 6:21Speaker 1: saying to day that draft and you know it didn't happen,
- 6:24Speaker 1: and so um, you know it was God's plan. But
- 6:28Speaker 1: I had a lot of calls going on that day. UM,
- 6:31Speaker 1: teams calling me, um, let me know they were interested,
- 6:35Speaker 1: they wanted to try and get me at this or
- 6:37Speaker 1: that pig. So you know, a day of the drunk. Hello,
- 6:45Speaker 1: did I lose you? So? UM, a lot of it. Um,
- 6:51Speaker 1: you know I went through that process. Um. I was
- 6:54Speaker 1: fortunate enough and blessing enough to go with St. Louis Rams. Um.
- 6:58Speaker 1: They gave me the opportunity and I kind of exceled
- 7:02Speaker 1: from day one. Man. It took a lot of hard work.
- 7:05Speaker 1: You know, we know you signed five year contract for
- 7:11Speaker 1: thirty seven million dollars with the Philadelphia so we know
- 7:14Speaker 1: it worked out right. You know you I read now,
- 7:18Speaker 1: you know I read and doing my research, so you
- 7:20Speaker 1: know it kind of worked out. I feel bless It took. Yeah,
- 7:25Speaker 1: I mean it takes a lot um to be undrafted man,
- 7:29Speaker 1: to come in UM not know what your future holds, um,
- 7:33Speaker 1: and and like everything that you know you do is
- 7:36Speaker 1: is heightened versus you know, a guy that does get drafted.
- 7:40Speaker 1: So I had to work extra hard. Man. I had to, um,
- 7:44Speaker 1: you know, countless hours outside of the time that um
- 7:48Speaker 1: they gave to me to make sure that every day. UM.
- 7:52Speaker 1: You know, I was fully prepared and I treated every
- 7:55Speaker 1: day like the interview. And UM, I was just determined. UM,
- 8:00Speaker 1: I didn't want to go back home. Um, you know,
- 8:02Speaker 1: god game the opportunity to get my foot in the door.
- 8:05Speaker 1: And uh, that's what it's about, getting that foot in
- 8:08Speaker 1: the door. That's what this whole show was about. Telling
- 8:10Speaker 1: people if you get a shot, don't don't don't don't
- 8:14Speaker 1: sleep on it. And you didn't sleep on your opportunity.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Nothing for advantage. Yeah, you take nothing for uh. Um,
- 8:21Speaker 1: you know, nothing for granted, man. And I think me
- 8:24Speaker 1: being undrafted and my story um just kind of you know,
- 8:27Speaker 1: propelled me and propelled my career. Um for me not
- 8:31Speaker 1: to take any play or any moment for granted, and
- 8:36Speaker 1: and appreciating the game and different aspects I think coming
- 8:40Speaker 1: in in the way that I did. Uh, you know
- 8:43Speaker 1: it just uh, it's just a perfect story for me.
- 8:46Speaker 1: It's an amazing story, right. They don't sleep on the story, man,
- 8:49Speaker 1: because of the fact that you know, you you came
- 8:52Speaker 1: from amazing high school, You went to then incredible academic
- 8:55Speaker 1: institution at the University of Virginia. You graduated with a
- 8:59Speaker 1: sociology rate. Like I said, that's my minor. I know
- 9:02Speaker 1: what you graduated it. That's not an easy degree. That's
- 9:04Speaker 1: a degree that that makes well rounded individuals people hired
- 9:08Speaker 1: you get that degree. They hire at IBM. Those are
- 9:11Speaker 1: people that are hiring nowadays at these technical companies because
- 9:14Speaker 1: they have a balanced vision. So and I understand who
- 9:17Speaker 1: you are from that perspective, and you and you were
- 9:19Speaker 1: determined to win. You were undrafted, you know, and that's
- 9:22Speaker 1: a certain degree of embarrassment because everybody want to you
- 9:24Speaker 1: want to get drafted. But that didn't. That didn't, don't you.
- 9:27Speaker 1: You went there, made that St. Louis Rams and you
- 9:29Speaker 1: signed the contract. We're gonna talk about more about with
- 9:32Speaker 1: the Roddy McLeod super Bowl champion starting safely for the
- 9:35Speaker 1: Philadelphi Eagles when we come back about his charities and
- 9:38Speaker 1: his business. Money making conversation. Man, this guy just signed
- 9:41Speaker 1: the contract in six for five millions, five years, thirty
- 9:44Speaker 1: seven million dollars. That's a money making conversation. This is
- 9:48Speaker 1: ra Sean McDonald. You're listening to money making conversation on
- 9:51Speaker 1: the phone. I have the starting safety of the Super
- 9:54Speaker 1: Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, Rodney McLeod, Rodney, how are you doing?
- 9:58Speaker 1: My friend? That was on good I want to ask you, Rodney,
- 10:01Speaker 1: when you sign a country. Your story is amazing and
- 10:04Speaker 1: I want to keep repeating and I'm sure you repeated
- 10:07Speaker 1: a lot of motivational speaking opportunities that you get in
- 10:10Speaker 1: front of adults and also especially in front of a
- 10:12Speaker 1: high school and middle school students because I know your
- 10:15Speaker 1: your range of who you talk to is why when
- 10:17Speaker 1: you become a sports or a sports or athlete of
- 10:20Speaker 1: your of your level, you you know you're coming to
- 10:23Speaker 1: the NFL as a free agent and then you've signed
- 10:25Speaker 1: this five year thirty self me and all the contract.
- 10:27Speaker 1: So that's that's a different group of people around you. Now,
- 10:31Speaker 1: what is team Rodney McCleod, right, that protects you to
- 10:34Speaker 1: make sure that you're making the right decisions. What is
- 10:37Speaker 1: who is or what is team Rodney McCloud. Um, I
- 10:41Speaker 1: mean the team is really you know, starts with my family. Um,
- 10:46Speaker 1: you know that's where it all started. Um. Those are
- 10:48Speaker 1: the ones that paved the way for me to get
- 10:51Speaker 1: to where I am today. And UM, I owe a
- 10:54Speaker 1: lot of my success, um you know, to them for
- 10:57Speaker 1: the sacrifices they made, UM for me growing up, getting
- 11:00Speaker 1: me um involved in sports in the first place, particularly football,
- 11:05Speaker 1: but um, you know I was well rounded. It did
- 11:07Speaker 1: a lot, Um, But then you know the other side
- 11:11Speaker 1: of things. My mom always you know, priesting me did
- 11:14Speaker 1: my parents in general, education was always important and you
- 11:18Speaker 1: know I am athletic, I am challenged, but um, you know,
- 11:23Speaker 1: don't forget what's important. And UM at the end of
- 11:27Speaker 1: the day. Uh, you know, knowledge is power man and
- 11:30Speaker 1: and and the mind is a powerful uh source. And
- 11:34Speaker 1: so it was always priesting me regardless of uh what
- 11:38Speaker 1: I'm doing on that field. If the grades aren't in line,
- 11:42Speaker 1: then there we know more of that. So I think, um,
- 11:48Speaker 1: just the way I was raised man, UM, it kind
- 11:51Speaker 1: of prepared me just for life and everything that you
- 11:54Speaker 1: know that I've gone through. Uh. You know, my parents
- 11:59Speaker 1: that that that work. UM, Like I said, very hard.
- 12:03Speaker 1: So I know what hard work looks like. UM. I
- 12:06Speaker 1: know you have to work, um to get um to
- 12:09Speaker 1: see those results that you want. And so that's where
- 12:11Speaker 1: it starts. Man. I got a fiancee. She's a part
- 12:14Speaker 1: of the team. And then UM, you know, I surround
- 12:17Speaker 1: myself with with the help that I need my agent
- 12:20Speaker 1: Tony Page, my PR guard Anton Barnes, and and financial
- 12:26Speaker 1: advisors man tax personal. Um. There there's a lot of
- 12:34Speaker 1: people man that that I can label as team Ronney
- 12:38Speaker 1: that that helped, um, um me get to our m
- 12:41Speaker 1: and keep me grounded. Now now okay, now let's go
- 12:43Speaker 1: into fashion. Okay, now hi if fashion retail store now rotting?
- 12:48Speaker 1: Who told you? Now see I think I can dress
- 12:50Speaker 1: that runday? Who told you? You know? Fashion got the style? Man? Honestly,
- 12:59Speaker 1: you know, I started in high school. You know, I
- 13:01Speaker 1: kind of just all always turned me a little bit.
- 13:05Speaker 1: But it wasn't until you know, I started, um getting
- 13:09Speaker 1: around guys around the league and you know, as you
- 13:12Speaker 1: as you go out, no I don't know, tell me,
- 13:14Speaker 1: tell me, yeah, whether it's my friends are going to
- 13:20Speaker 1: events and people just complimenting your style and your look.
- 13:23Speaker 1: And then you know I started to be like, hey, man,
- 13:25Speaker 1: like I like that, I like dressing up. You know, confidence,
- 13:30Speaker 1: I have a lot of fun and I was I
- 13:33Speaker 1: was always a guy that likes to present myself well,
- 13:36Speaker 1: and so um it just became my niche and um,
- 13:40Speaker 1: you know, I just wanted to take it to a
- 13:42Speaker 1: whole another level and put my put my all into it.
- 13:45Speaker 1: And now I'm an owner of backup house right there
- 13:50Speaker 1: and right where I'm from. Um it's actually right outside one.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I'm from d C. Area, Arms and Virginia and Pentegon
- 13:56Speaker 1: City Mall and we've been open since later November and
- 14:01Speaker 1: we've just been going every sinse Come on now, I
- 14:04Speaker 1: saw some pictures. That's a pretty big store. Many square feet?
- 14:10Speaker 1: Is that square feed that store? I don't exactly know
- 14:13Speaker 1: the exact square footage, but it's really not as big
- 14:16Speaker 1: as you think. Okay, okay, the pictures fool of me.
- 14:19Speaker 1: The pictures a fool of me. Yeah. But we I
- 14:22Speaker 1: mean we make it, we make it, We make it work. Man.
- 14:25Speaker 1: The store is are always full, a lot of nice
- 14:28Speaker 1: middle to hi end brands. Daniel Patrick off White represent
- 14:33Speaker 1: other UK um so we have something from UK Los
- 14:38Speaker 1: Angeles area, Canada, um Man some local brands too. So
- 14:45Speaker 1: we just wanted to bring something to actually with the
- 14:46Speaker 1: d C man. D C like we're known for fashion,
- 14:50Speaker 1: but you know, we we we we're kind of a
- 14:52Speaker 1: little bit behind, you know when it comes to the
- 14:54Speaker 1: New York's and the Los Angeles, but we're trying to
- 14:58Speaker 1: just be that store man, that that it um you know,
- 15:01Speaker 1: DC back on the map. How do you promote it?
- 15:04Speaker 1: How did how do you promote hip hop? My listeners?
- 15:06Speaker 1: You your store owner, I know, your super Bowl champ.
- 15:09Speaker 1: You know, but you you open it before you became
- 15:11Speaker 1: the Super Bowl champ. Okay, so you had a vision.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Just man, I'm just gonna take advantage of my Look,
- 15:17Speaker 1: this is my love, this is my passion, and I'm
- 15:19Speaker 1: gonna do it. So what were the steps? Man? Um?
- 15:23Speaker 1: I mean it really started with, uh first, my mentor. Um,
- 15:28Speaker 1: that's where it all started. Kevin James, who is now
- 15:31Speaker 1: my business partner. Um, he was mentoring me the entire
- 15:34Speaker 1: time prior to us opening up. And UM, you know
- 15:38Speaker 1: we sat down one day man, and we had a
- 15:40Speaker 1: vision and we had a conversation UM over dinner and
- 15:43Speaker 1: uh you know that day forward. UM, you know we
- 15:47Speaker 1: understood what we wanted to accomplish. And UM, this uh
- 15:51Speaker 1: store right here is just to start there. You know
- 15:54Speaker 1: what what the end goal, um is gonna be. You know,
- 15:58Speaker 1: we were planning to have a few locally, but then
- 16:01Speaker 1: also make the same be global. Man. Um. It starts
- 16:05Speaker 1: with being able to trust in someone like that guy
- 16:08Speaker 1: in my position who was not there on the daily basis.
- 16:10Speaker 1: You need someone that understands the industry UM, and the
- 16:14Speaker 1: hands and out that can manage the store day and
- 16:17Speaker 1: the day out and I'm lucky enough to have a
- 16:19Speaker 1: guy like that who has a lot of experience and
- 16:22Speaker 1: that I trust. Um. First of all, first of all,
- 16:25Speaker 1: you didn't open the nightclub, so you know so you
- 16:28Speaker 1: know something you know that happens all the time opening
- 16:30Speaker 1: the nightclub. Dude, they can party. I like the party.
- 16:33Speaker 1: People show up for my parties. I'm open a nightclub
- 16:36Speaker 1: that you know that? That was I was so happy
- 16:40Speaker 1: when I read that on your bio. But let's switch
- 16:42Speaker 1: gears when you just finished talking. It's called Backup House. Uh,
- 16:45Speaker 1: it's a high end fashion retail store. Uh go to
- 16:48Speaker 1: www dot b O h U s A as Backup
- 16:52Speaker 1: House b O b O h USA dot com as
- 16:56Speaker 1: www dot b O h U s A dot com. Millenny,
- 17:00Speaker 1: come to force now, HBUs. It's a bunch of HBU
- 17:03Speaker 1: C HBCU campuses rounding that areaf to Arlington. Go up there, Howard,
- 17:08Speaker 1: how would come on? Now? Come on, throw some love
- 17:13Speaker 1: to my man riding the cloud and back of the house.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Let's talk about you. You know your charity man, because
- 17:18Speaker 1: you're out there man, you're happening out the community. Uh,
- 17:21Speaker 1: you know. Spokesperson for the American Association for Cancer Research
- 17:24Speaker 1: tell us about that. Yeah, man, um so I'm just
- 17:28Speaker 1: uh I recently partnered with them once I came to Philadelphia. UM.
- 17:32Speaker 1: So it was a big year for me. Um I
- 17:34Speaker 1: came over here, you know, from for a while. But
- 17:35Speaker 1: then also um, Matt, you know, with this tremendous organization,
- 17:39Speaker 1: American Association for Cancer Research, that does you know, phenomenal
- 17:43Speaker 1: job man, and trying to uh find a cure um
- 17:47Speaker 1: for for cancer and not just one. Um. You know,
- 17:49Speaker 1: there's over a hundred types cancers and so many people
- 17:53Speaker 1: are affected by uh, you know, there's a large community
- 17:56Speaker 1: of us, and so UM I got with them personally
- 17:59Speaker 1: my self because of my grandmother that passed away of
