- 0:53Speaker 1: Oh hey, some things now or change, like your kids
- 1:02Speaker 1: always leaving tiny toys on the floor for you to
- 1:04Speaker 1: step on and Gango saving folks lots of money on

- 1:15Speaker 1: save you or more. All right, I'm your host with
- 1:20Speaker 1: Sean McDonald and welcome to Money Making Conversations. Each money
- 1:23Speaker 1: Making Conversation interview talks with entrepreneurship, entrepreneurs and entertainers. That's
- 1:28Speaker 1: what I do on this show. I provide the consumer
- 1:30Speaker 1: and business owner access to celebrity CEO, entrepreneurs and interest
- 1:34Speaker 1: decision makers. You know, I'd like to tell everybody that
- 1:36Speaker 1: the Money Making Conversation interviews provide relatable information to the
- 1:39Speaker 1: listener about career and financial planning, entrepreneurship, motivation, leadership, overcoming
- 1:44Speaker 1: the arts, and how to live a balanced life. My
- 1:47Speaker 1: next guest is a comedy legend. I could only put
- 1:49Speaker 1: it like that. He is a legend. I had a
- 1:51Speaker 1: good fortune of meeting him several times when I managed
- 1:53Speaker 1: Steve Harvey and he made a surprise visit on stage
- 1:56Speaker 1: when I was producing b Teach Common Views, so I
- 1:58Speaker 1: know him well. He makes his Netflix original comedy special
- 2:02Speaker 1: premiere with We'll Do It for Half. I saw it
- 2:04Speaker 1: twice as brilliantly funny. He's an entrepreneur with restaurants, based
- 2:08Speaker 1: on authentic Mexican cuisine from his grandmother's traditional recipes. He
- 2:11Speaker 1: has toured with some of my favorite comedians like Adie Griffin,
- 2:14Speaker 1: DL Hughley and Cedric the Entertainer, and mostly importantly, he
- 2:17Speaker 1: is a trailblazer when he's starting his self produced ABC sitcom,
- 2:21Speaker 1: he stand up comedy specials examins race, ethnic relations, and
- 2:25Speaker 1: especially the Mexican American culture. Please welcome to money making Conversations,
- 2:29Speaker 1: my man, George Lopez, how are you serve? Hey, my man?
- 2:34Speaker 1: You know, uh, I saw the specially send me a
- 2:36Speaker 1: little link so I can see it earlier. Is I
- 2:37Speaker 1: want to make sure I saw it before I interviewed you?
- 2:39Speaker 1: And uh, how do you just George? Okay, first of all,
- 2:42Speaker 1: when somebody calls you a comedy legend, what is that?
- 2:45Speaker 1: How do you feel when somebody says that about you?
- 2:47Speaker 1: You know, I mean, it's it's so if they were
- 2:51Speaker 1: if there were doctors, you know, there's so many different
- 2:53Speaker 1: doctors and different and different variety of fields, you know,
- 2:56Speaker 1: so someone would say, you know, he's the scientists, he's
- 2:59Speaker 1: the biotex science, he's a heart doctor, he's a brain surgeony.
- 3:03Speaker 1: This guy's a dentist. This guy's a general practitioner O B. G.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Y N you know, oncologist. So I looked at myself
- 3:10Speaker 1: as almost a bit of a multi faceted doctor. You know.
- 3:16Speaker 1: One of the things that on this sporty one year
- 3:20Speaker 1: journey that I did. You know, I grew up very alone.
- 3:24Speaker 1: I grew up without a male figure. I never knew
- 3:27Speaker 1: my father, I didn't know my mother. My grandparents were
- 3:30Speaker 1: very removed from me. And you know, there was just
- 3:34Speaker 1: something growing up that made me feel like I was
- 3:38Speaker 1: different than everybody else, not better, just different. And I
- 3:43Speaker 1: couldn't put my finger on it, but it was that
- 3:46Speaker 1: feeling of being different or having a better instinct than
- 3:50Speaker 1: everybody that surrounded me that made me do something that
- 3:53Speaker 1: was probably the most terrifying thing anybody could ever do,
- 3:57Speaker 1: and do it for years without ever seen any improvement.
- 4:02Speaker 1: So legend in the mind of of of the people,
- 4:06Speaker 1: but just somebody who you know, worked hard to create
- 4:11Speaker 1: a different narrative than the narrative that I saw. I'm
- 4:14Speaker 1: gonna tell you some being a former standard comic, did
- 4:17Speaker 1: deaf comedy jam did all the all the comedy specials myself.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I've been blessed like that. So when I saw your special,
- 4:23Speaker 1: and I've seen your specials in the in the past
- 4:25Speaker 1: where one of your funny, but all your specials are funny.
- 4:27Speaker 1: One of them that really made me laugh with when
- 4:29Speaker 1: you I think Cedric Entertainer was backstage and when you
- 4:32Speaker 1: ended the show you crawled through your your name to
- 4:35Speaker 1: get off stage. Man, that laughed so hard on now
- 4:38Speaker 1: with Joe Herge, What was running through your mind? That
- 4:40Speaker 1: was funny? Dude, Well, you know we that that one
- 4:43Speaker 1: we did live at the Kennedy Center. I was there
- 4:46Speaker 1: for Eddie Murphy's march Wain and then as I stood
- 4:50Speaker 1: there and I got a couple of jokes off and
- 4:52Speaker 1: I got a huge response. I thought, you know, if
- 4:54Speaker 1: I'm gonna do my HBO special, they wanted to do it,
- 4:56Speaker 1: and a load of way you couldn't find a theater,
- 4:59Speaker 1: but that being there at any place, I thought, you know,
- 5:02Speaker 1: I like this room. It's a perfect size, it's a
- 5:05Speaker 1: great place. You know. Politically, where we were with the
- 5:10Speaker 1: wall and then everybody was a shade of having the
- 5:13Speaker 1: American flag upside down because upside down means distress. And
- 5:19Speaker 1: as we had a meeting months before the production, because
- 5:22Speaker 1: I had to start to build the set. We were
- 5:25Speaker 1: under an agreement that the director, Troy Miller, who's an
- 5:28Speaker 1: incredible director, to the rest of the development crazy stuff
- 5:31Speaker 1: that we told him that we weren't going to put
- 5:34Speaker 1: the flag upside down, but he said, hell, no, man,
- 5:37Speaker 1: We're putting the flag upside down. So it wasn't until
- 5:40Speaker 1: I got there that day to rehearse that we noticed
- 5:43Speaker 1: that the flag was upside down. And then he said, hey, gee,
- 5:46Speaker 1: you know at the end of your show, you should
- 5:48Speaker 1: crawl under the wall here said man that as I
- 5:52Speaker 1: said my under that, he goes, yeah, just sit and
- 5:56Speaker 1: and I did it. Man, Man, I laughed so I
- 5:59Speaker 1: wouldn't grab my wife had played that back to look
- 6:01Speaker 1: at this food. He he crawled under his name under
- 6:04Speaker 1: the wall, and then backstage said it was laughing bad.
- 6:07Speaker 1: That was just that's what we're talking about. Legendary stuff, man,
- 6:10Speaker 1: because that's a stand up. You know. I know the
- 6:14Speaker 1: pressure it takes to be able to go on stage
- 6:16Speaker 1: be original. And when I look at you when I
- 6:18Speaker 1: watched this special, man, this is my this is what
- 6:21Speaker 1: I say about stand up. When I look at a special,
- 6:23Speaker 1: I go wow. I would never thought of that joke.
- 6:26Speaker 1: I wouldn't never thought that joke, and that would that's
- 6:28Speaker 1: your special man and in its own Netflix, and it's
- 6:32Speaker 1: your very first one on them Netflix, and we'll do
- 6:34Speaker 1: it for half and and just tell us about the
- 6:37Speaker 1: whole process of getting it over to Netflix and and
- 6:39Speaker 1: taping it in San Francisco. Well, you know, let me say,
- 6:43Speaker 1: let me say this before you, because you just stand up.
- 6:45Speaker 1: So one thing I think inherited and everyone is some
- 6:48Speaker 1: people everybody has a sense of humor, whether they take
- 6:52Speaker 1: themselves too serious or they need to lighten up, or
- 6:55Speaker 1: they're dry. One of the things about about comedy and
- 6:59Speaker 1: comedian is is even the odds of even getting a
- 7:03Speaker 1: little bit of light shown on you is so nearly impossible.
- 7:09Speaker 1: But you know, there's so many guys that I saw
- 7:12Speaker 1: growing up, and that I saw in the clubs in
- 7:14Speaker 1: the eighties and nineties, in the last twenty years that
- 7:17Speaker 1: were so good, that we're so clever, that we're great writers,
- 7:22Speaker 1: and whatever fortune, whatever fate, didn't let anything shine on
- 7:26Speaker 1: those guys. And as as much as the world needs drafter,
- 7:30Speaker 1: there's a whole group of comedians who are incredibly funny
- 7:36Speaker 1: that no one will ever hear of That's why whatever
- 7:39Speaker 1: you do, do it because you love it. Because you
- 7:42Speaker 1: know there's no guarantee that you're not gonna be one
- 7:44Speaker 1: of those cats that gets any love. But if you
- 7:47Speaker 1: feel good about what you do, then that's already becoming
- 7:51Speaker 1: a success. You know successes and like everybody knows your name,
- 7:55Speaker 1: people see you. Yeah, that that that's great. But the
- 7:58Speaker 1: one thing is that you never loosen You're never loosening
- 8:01Speaker 1: your grip on something that you can't really get a
- 8:04Speaker 1: grip on. Like I think you work harder when you
- 8:07Speaker 1: get a little love and you start to do theaters
- 8:09Speaker 1: and you start to do arena and you start to
- 8:10Speaker 1: meet the people that you started to to meet on
- 8:13Speaker 1: the way up. I've seen a lot of guys stayed out,
- 8:15Speaker 1: but I always worked the hardest when I had my show,
- 8:20Speaker 1: when I had my taught show, when I had the specials.
- 8:23Speaker 1: So it's just been something that I've never been able
- 8:25Speaker 1: to relinquish. So going to San Francisco and go into
- 8:28Speaker 1: the war field and knowing the history of it, knowing
- 8:31Speaker 1: that Jimmy Henders played their Janni's Joplin Santana Ravana as
- 8:36Speaker 1: it gas your bed. Everybody that's anybody's been in there,
- 8:39Speaker 1: and you know you can do it anywhere, but when
- 8:43Speaker 1: you do it in a place that has historical significant
- 8:47Speaker 1: going to be Apollo. Chris Spencer asked me to do
- 8:50Speaker 1: this thing at the Apollo, and going there it may
- 8:53Speaker 1: not mean anything to anybody else. That's not for me
- 8:57Speaker 1: to decide. But what it meant to me to be
- 9:00Speaker 1: on stage with the Apollo, to ryal the road through
- 9:02Speaker 1: to go do Radio City is beyond you know, anybody's
- 9:06Speaker 1: true imagination or level of appreciation. I'm just I'm just
- 9:10Speaker 1: kind of honored to be able to do the things
- 9:13Speaker 1: that I've always wanted to do. And and and thank
- 9:16Speaker 1: you for explaining that, because I remember I was producing
- 9:20Speaker 1: bats Comic View and you may not even remember this,
- 9:23Speaker 1: and j Anthony Brown was hosting that that run or
- 9:25Speaker 1: Betis Comic View and you came and uh, and we
- 9:27Speaker 1: were trying to get you to go on stage. Oh no,
- 9:29Speaker 1: it's not my thing. It's not my thing, you know,
- 9:31Speaker 1: as y'all. I'm just here to watch and just wish
- 9:34Speaker 1: everybody good luck. And I remember we got you to
- 9:36Speaker 1: go on stage and you walked on stage, we introduced
- 9:38Speaker 1: you and the whole room of black people stood up
- 9:41Speaker 1: and gave you a standard ovation. And that to me,
- 9:45Speaker 1: you know, because you know, you're always famous with your group,
- 9:47Speaker 1: you know, like you know, like Jeff's felt he famous
- 9:50Speaker 1: with his crowd, and you know, and you you established
- 9:52Speaker 1: your brand of just being a funny guy. But in
- 9:55Speaker 1: my mind, the mex American culture was your what's your
- 9:57Speaker 1: what's your home run? And when I walked when I
- 10:00Speaker 1: saw you walk out that George, and these black people
- 10:04Speaker 1: stood off because you know, black people just like Hispanics,
- 10:06Speaker 1: you know, they don't they don't give it up or
- 10:08Speaker 1: unless they respect it, okay. And when they walked out
- 10:11Speaker 1: there and gave you a standard ovation, man, I went,
- 10:13Speaker 1: this dude got it, man, he got something extra going
- 10:16Speaker 1: on in his life. And I just I just That's
- 10:18Speaker 1: why I call you a legend, man, because when you
- 10:20Speaker 1: crossed all these different lanes man with respect, that's beautiful, dude,
- 10:25Speaker 1: that's beautiful. You know. You know I was my grandmother
- 10:30Speaker 1: raised me, and my grandmother was in my act. I
- 10:32Speaker 1: would say, you know, my grandmother was was racially insensitive,
- 10:35Speaker 1: like like your grandmother's like everybody's grandmother's especially insensitive. So
- 10:39Speaker 1: part of my material is about her relationship with African
- 10:44Speaker 1: American people and then coming to the door not opening
- 10:47Speaker 1: the door her relationship with black people, saying you know what,
- 10:51Speaker 1: like I said, I said, my first girlfriend, there's a
- 10:55Speaker 1: there's a true story, and it hurts and it's still
- 10:59Speaker 1: funny to this day. Like when I was in the
- 11:01Speaker 1: seventh grade, there was this girl that looked like get
- 11:04Speaker 1: Christie Love. She was in seventh grade. Her name was
- 11:06Speaker 1: Christina Husky, fro, light skin, tall, beautiful, and she liked
- 11:12Speaker 1: me and all my friends gave me a hard time
- 11:14Speaker 1: and I would walk with her the class and I
- 11:17Speaker 1: you know, I dug her and she was cool. She
- 11:20Speaker 1: lived on the other side of the street from where
- 11:23Speaker 1: I lived, the main street, and one day I was
- 11:26Speaker 1: walking home with her and my grandmother. I guess must
- 11:28Speaker 1: have got off work early and saw me and roll
- 11:32Speaker 1: the window down and hunk the horn and did a
- 11:34Speaker 1: U turn on sa orando mission roll the window down
- 11:37Speaker 1: and says, hey, shat whet your ass home? To call
- 11:41Speaker 1: me Shaft? When I was walking with this African American girl,
- 11:46Speaker 1: I know how funding you who Shaft was, but she's
- 11:49Speaker 1: like a shot get home, you know, And she flipped out.
- 11:53Speaker 1: So I said, so what what if I like the
- 11:55Speaker 1: black girl so all I know about no? I said, why,
- 11:58Speaker 1: why why is it your concern? She those, because I
- 12:00Speaker 1: don't like them. And if you do, they're gonna see
- 12:03Speaker 1: me with you, and they're gonna think I like him,
- 12:04Speaker 1: and I don't. I mean, that's how she thought. And
- 12:07Speaker 1: then and then and then in school, Christina came over
- 12:12Speaker 1: to me one day and said she didn't feel that
- 12:14Speaker 1: I should spend any more time with her because people
- 12:17Speaker 1: wouldn't get it, and it was just becoming an issue,
- 12:19Speaker 1: and and and we I never walked her the class.
- 12:22Speaker 1: I never walked her home from school after that. And
- 12:26Speaker 1: you know, when I was a young kid, still made
- 12:28Speaker 1: quite an impression on me. But um, you know, in
- 12:31Speaker 1: order to look at stand up as all of the
- 12:34Speaker 1: stand up, being racially insensitive to different groups, especially Latinos,
- 12:39Speaker 1: was part of my mix. So you can't pull one
- 12:43Speaker 1: thing out and say, you know, he's racist towards African
- 12:45Speaker 1: American people when I've said worse things about everybody else.
- 12:48Speaker 1: One of the things that made Richard Pryor, or did Gregory,
- 12:52Speaker 1: or you know, George Carlin, or made anybody you Steve
- 12:57Speaker 1: Cedric D. L Eddie Griffin, who makes anybody anything is
- 13:02Speaker 1: not if you're gonna shoot the gun, shoot the gun.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Don't hold the gun and not shoot it, then put
- 13:07Speaker 1: the gun down. So in comedy, if you're gonna take
- 13:11Speaker 1: the shot, take the shot, don't dance around the shot.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Don't don't don't don't ham and Hall. Don't look at
- 13:18Speaker 1: an audience and say I can't do that. You know
- 13:21Speaker 1: so many people. I can't do that. The honesty is
- 13:24Speaker 1: gets the respect and and the legacy is somebody never
- 13:27Speaker 1: pulling a punch. It's finally here the season of celebration,
- 13:32Speaker 1: and no matter how you celebrate with family and friends,

- 15:25Speaker 1: Dot Ai. Now I'm talking to George Lopez, the brilliant
- 15:28Speaker 1: George Lopez. He has a Netflix special that's coming out
- 15:31Speaker 1: of June Tuesday, June thirty. It's called We'll Do It
- 15:35Speaker 1: for Half. We'll Do It for Half. When I started
- 15:38Speaker 1: your interview, George, I told you I'll watch your special twice. Okay,
- 15:42Speaker 1: and this is why I watch this. But first of all,
- 15:43Speaker 1: I enjoyed it. And then I remember, you know, as
- 15:46Speaker 1: we all were in the beginning, we just won't get
- 15:48Speaker 1: a stage, so we tell some jokes so we can
- 15:50Speaker 1: be funny. That's the goal, Just to be funny. Go
- 15:53Speaker 1: from an opener to a middle act to a headline,
- 15:55Speaker 1: to get that get that first class ticket and you
- 15:57Speaker 1: you traveling, and all that good stuff and anything else
- 16:00Speaker 1: it comes along is a blessing. Okay, that's stuff that's
- 16:02Speaker 1: the life of a stand up of the average stand
- 16:04Speaker 1: up comic in this country right now. Now, then I
- 16:08Speaker 1: with your website and I saw your brand I saw restaurants,
- 16:13Speaker 1: I saw blue halls, I saw your foundation, I saw
- 16:20Speaker 1: COVID nineteen face mask. I so we can't breathe T
- 16:23Speaker 1: shirts and so so now when I and I said that,
- 16:27Speaker 1: then I looked at your special again and I put
- 16:29Speaker 1: into perspective all that weight that you're now carrying on
- 16:33Speaker 1: stage with you now when you're performing. So in the beginning,
- 16:36Speaker 1: you didn't carry all that weight. Employees and COVID ninteen
- 16:41Speaker 1: and all that stuff. All that's going on stage with
- 16:44Speaker 1: you now, and that's a lot of people don't understand that.
- 16:47Speaker 1: To be funny man under that amount of global understanding.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Gave me a truly different perspective and appreciated your comment
- 16:54Speaker 1: even more when I saw it the second time. You
- 16:57Speaker 1: understand where I'm coming from, absolutely, you know, um uh,
- 17:03Speaker 1: I think everybody liked me when my show started. You know,
- 17:07Speaker 1: my show wasn't a huge shit, but it did a
- 17:10Speaker 1: hundred and twenty episodes. It did, you know, five and
- 17:12Speaker 1: a half years on ABC, which I had company, But
- 17:15Speaker 1: that was the family show with an edge. But I'm
- 17:18Speaker 1: gonna tell you right now that I lost a lot
- 17:21Speaker 1: of people, including people when I started to vocalize and
- 17:25Speaker 1: I started to have my opinion on issues, but also
- 17:28Speaker 1: at the Grammys in two thousand and eight February two
- 17:31Speaker 1: thousand and eight. The election was in November of eight.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Chris Rock called me on a Monday after the Grammys.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Had said, can I give Barack Obama your telephone number
- 17:41Speaker 1: because he wants to ask you, you know, something about
- 17:44Speaker 1: your support Hillary Clinton's office had sent a facts to
- 17:48Speaker 1: the office, very impersonal, and I said sure. So I'm
- 17:54Speaker 1: watching the CNN at one fifty two Barack Obama's campaign
- 18:00Speaker 1: the Senator and it's a one fifty five and he's leaving.
- 18:03Speaker 1: And I said, there's no way that this guy is
- 18:06Speaker 1: gonna call me at two o'clock. If I'm watching CNN
- 18:10Speaker 1: and he's leaving an event, there's no way call call
- 18:13Speaker 1: at two third or three two o'clock phone rings low, Uh,
- 18:19Speaker 1: George Ota, Yes, hold for the Senator. Jared's Barack Obama. Ala, Hey,
- 18:23Speaker 1: I saw the TV. Yeah, I said. He said, listen,
- 18:25Speaker 1: I don't know where you are politically, but you know,
- 18:28Speaker 1: you know vote means a lot to me. I think
- 18:30Speaker 1: the communities have a lot in common. I said, listen, man,
- 18:32Speaker 1: you know I will help you. And then I did
- 18:36Speaker 1: what maybe was the most difficult thing to do in Texas.
- 18:41Speaker 1: In South Texas is I would go to these theaters
- 18:44Speaker 1: and people would be lined up to see me twice
- 18:46Speaker 1: in an afternoon. I will talk about half an hour
- 18:49Speaker 1: to be a political the mayor, and they'd be some
- 18:51Speaker 1: political speeches, and I would go to a half hour,
- 18:54Speaker 1: maybe four or five minutes, and then I would say
- 18:57Speaker 1: that I'm gonna support Barack Obama. And they would boo
- 19:01Speaker 1: and they would yell and they would hiss, and I
- 19:04Speaker 1: would be like, listen, listen, listen this, wait a minute,
- 19:06Speaker 1: hang out a second. They would walk out on me,
- 19:09Speaker 1: and then I kept on the message. I stayed and
- 19:12Speaker 1: I started to say, listen, you have a vote for
- 19:15Speaker 1: somebody just because she's not African American. And that's how
- 19:19Speaker 1: you go by the same dayer every time because your
- 19:21Speaker 1: dad brought it, bought it by the same soup, because
- 19:24Speaker 1: your mom bought it. I said, there's choices, and we
- 19:26Speaker 1: shouldn't just follow it. Man. It was the most difficult
- 19:31Speaker 1: to have your own people turn on you for your
- 19:35Speaker 1: political stance of getting someone to who's different, who's African American.
- 19:41Speaker 1: A lot of there's a lot of racial division between
- 19:43Speaker 1: our cultures as well, and they just they just didn't
- 19:47Speaker 1: get it until I kept doing it and he started
- 19:50Speaker 1: to do it. But at one time in New Mexico,
- 19:52Speaker 1: we had a rally out there by you of them
- 19:55Speaker 1: and they tore the gates down trying to get in
- 19:57Speaker 1: and they expected twenty thou people. That's fifty thousand people
- 20:00Speaker 1: out there. Wow, you know they're they're learning. It's amazing thing.
- 20:06Speaker 1: And when I'm talking to you, I'm talking to I'm
- 20:08Speaker 1: almost talking to a historian. Okay. And that's a compliment
- 20:11Speaker 1: right there, because when you said, for forty one years
- 20:14Speaker 1: of comedy, man, because we are people people don't understand
- 20:17Speaker 1: by common community is good comedians. We really just document
- 20:20Speaker 1: things and then we twist them on stage. But we
- 20:22Speaker 1: really are telling the truth in a way. If you
- 20:25Speaker 1: just really broke down what we're saying, we just making
- 20:27Speaker 1: just make it, make it funny because we made real
- 20:29Speaker 1: sharp or left or right turns, and that's where the
- 20:31Speaker 1: humor comes from. But we're really just telling you the truth.
- 20:34Speaker 1: And when I when I look at COVID nineteen, if
- 20:36Speaker 1: you don't mind me talking about right quick, it's affecting
- 20:39Speaker 1: the Hispanic community or Latino community and the Black community
- 20:43Speaker 1: is being devastated by the COVID nineteen. And then I
- 20:45Speaker 1: went on the website and I was so happy to
- 20:47Speaker 1: see that you are doing your part providing COVID nineteen
- 20:51Speaker 1: face masks. How did you get into that and what
- 20:53Speaker 1: motivated you to participate at that level? Well, first of all,
- 20:57Speaker 1: you know what not and and let's not even going
- 21:00Speaker 1: to talk about medical and our medical conditions. So I
- 21:04Speaker 1: had a kidney transplant in two thousand five from when
- 21:07Speaker 1: I was married by my wife and gave it to me.
- 21:10Speaker 1: But this was stuff that should have been detected when
- 21:12Speaker 1: I was a child. I went to bed, you know,
- 21:14Speaker 1: kids went the bed, you know, and instead of saying
- 21:17Speaker 1: that maybe there's something wrong, because there was something wrong,
- 21:20Speaker 1: I just didn't do it because I drank so much
- 21:21Speaker 1: water I couldn't keep it in. And I mean I
- 21:23Speaker 1: had a narrow year. I was born early. I went undetected.
- 21:28Speaker 1: I could have had both my original kidneys. If I
- 21:30Speaker 1: had come from a culture where when somebody went to bed,
- 21:34Speaker 1: you take him to the doctor. If I would have
- 21:36Speaker 1: had a buck testival, I had an m R I
- 21:38Speaker 1: or something, I could have saved myself. So so the
- 21:41Speaker 1: fact that we ignore situations of our health until clearly
- 21:45Speaker 1: we can't get out of bed. I knew something was wrong.
- 21:48Speaker 1: So so with COVID and and and uh compromise immune system,
- 21:53Speaker 1: and knowing that that it could spread the family, and
- 21:56Speaker 1: that it's invisible then and that you had to take
- 21:58Speaker 1: it serious. It was a no brainer, man, to to
- 22:01Speaker 1: get involved in the mass, to donate money to charity,
- 22:04Speaker 1: to try to get people the mass as well. But also,
- 22:07Speaker 1: you know, let's talk about D L. Hubley, who uh,
- 22:10Speaker 1: go ahead, uh a symptomatic, So you look at pre
- 22:15Speaker 1: existing conditions. But also I said this, you know, and
- 22:18Speaker 1: I haven't talked to him about this, but I just
- 22:20Speaker 1: feel like, as as you never want to fall out
- 22:24Speaker 1: on stage, you never want to fall out anywhere. Could
- 22:26Speaker 1: have been driving, could have been anywhere. That may have
- 22:29Speaker 1: been the best thing for him personally, because if it
- 22:33Speaker 1: had happened in the hotel room, he probably would have thought,
- 22:36Speaker 1: I'm fatigued, I didn't eat, I've been traveling and and
- 22:39Speaker 1: and look past the COVID until maybe it was further
- 22:44Speaker 1: along and now it was more serious. So he raises
- 22:48Speaker 1: the fact that he set out in Nashville a larger
- 22:52Speaker 1: issue is that maybe we shouldn't be rushing back to
- 22:55Speaker 1: the clubs as comedians and as an audience because this
- 22:59Speaker 1: is a real, real, real thing, and as hard as
- 23:02Speaker 1: it is to get by because a lot of us
- 23:04Speaker 1: don't have disposed income, you only have one life, and
- 23:07Speaker 1: that's the life that you need to protect. I was
- 23:09Speaker 1: right talking to George Lopez. Is comedy special examines race
- 23:13Speaker 1: ethnic relations, especially they have Mexican American culture. Anything different
- 23:17Speaker 1: than this special of this air and on Netflix up
- 23:19Speaker 1: on June, George Lopez, you know, just being incredibly funny.
- 23:23Speaker 1: You're being funny in that, dude, you and I want
- 23:25Speaker 1: to take you too special. You do one in English
- 23:27Speaker 1: and you do one in Spanish. You know that, right?
- 23:30Speaker 1: That's true? Yeah, So I think I think creating the
- 23:33Speaker 1: narrative of the uncle that was like going to the
- 23:36Speaker 1: doctor gangurine and Australia disease and our disease, creating a
- 23:40Speaker 1: also ego also, you know, using wanting to know where
- 23:45Speaker 1: all the flu comes from, uh, wanting to win other
- 23:50Speaker 1: people's business. All this whole thing about Karen's and all
- 23:53Speaker 1: these people, if they have one thing consistently is they're
- 23:57Speaker 1: all older white women. Because everybody else has found a
- 24:01Speaker 1: way to mind your own business. When I was married,
- 24:04Speaker 1: I was very to a woman that if she saw
- 24:06Speaker 1: a kid without a parent and the parent was sitting
- 24:10Speaker 1: down two feet away, She's like, you shouldn't let your
- 24:12Speaker 1: kid unattended, I said, and you're gonna get knocked out,
- 24:15Speaker 1: you know, in funding your own business. So we as
- 24:17Speaker 1: a culture mind our own business. But when someone thinks
- 24:21Speaker 1: they're superior to you, they don't have a problem walking
- 24:23Speaker 1: up to you in a restaurant when you're eating, asking
- 24:26Speaker 1: why you're not wearing a mask. But if someone sees me,
- 24:29Speaker 1: or sees anybody of color in a convenience store and
- 24:32Speaker 1: you're starting to throw uh and word around, you started
- 24:35Speaker 1: to throw some disrespect, you're gonna take. You're gonna take
- 24:38Speaker 1: a two piece combo right by the five hour energy
- 24:41Speaker 1: drinks and those vitamins that can stop your heart. You
- 24:48Speaker 1: too much, man, too much, You too much. Everyone, everyone
- 24:52Speaker 1: of those days has taken what they've deserved. They saw
- 24:55Speaker 1: that later, go back to your taking flop like a
- 25:00Speaker 1: like a heavy bag. Yes, yes, yes, well man, I
- 25:04Speaker 1: appreciate you, George Lopez. Man, uh, I just wanted to
- 25:07Speaker 1: talk to you man on this on my show, and
- 25:09Speaker 1: uh kind of come from a different and this is
- 25:13Speaker 1: the fastest whatever I think it's Yeah, it really is.
- 25:17Speaker 1: It's like twenty three minutes right now. But I just
- 25:19Speaker 1: want to let you know just a lot. When people
- 25:20Speaker 1: come on money, make a conversation. Man, I have no agenda,
- 25:23Speaker 1: but your greatness need to be discussed. I just want
- 25:25Speaker 1: to let people hear a little bit of you. You
- 25:28Speaker 1: because there's a man behind those jokes. Let me say that.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Let me say that, you know, the restaurants and the
- 25:34Speaker 1: beer and all that stuff came to me as an opportunity.
- 25:36Speaker 1: You know. If there's one thing that we have is
- 25:38Speaker 1: we have an imaginative mind. You can be an inventor
- 25:42Speaker 1: and come from no place. Everybody who was an inventor
- 25:44Speaker 1: has come from from not from wealth. They come from
- 25:47Speaker 1: their own idea. If you have an idea for an
- 25:49Speaker 1: invention or something you think is different, don't just live
- 25:53Speaker 1: with that idea. Look online, look for these places. Look
- 25:56Speaker 1: for a place, because listen, the strangest thing is gonna
- 26:00Speaker 1: happen to you. Nothing is impossible. And if you have
- 26:02Speaker 1: an idea that you think is relevant and it's rug,
- 26:07Speaker 1: somebody will find that idea. If you reach out and
- 26:10Speaker 1: say I have this great idea for something that's true,
- 26:13Speaker 1: that's very true, that's very few George Lopez, I don't
- 26:16Speaker 1: want to hold you, my man. Thank you for taking
- 26:18Speaker 1: the time to come on Money Making Conversation and speaking
