- 2:25Speaker 1: well some of the co stars or stars or Dr
- 2:28Speaker 1: Jaqueline of course of miss Dr Whitmore, Dr Heavily, who's
- 2:32Speaker 1: a danist uh Dr to Tessa who's an occupying in
- 2:36Speaker 1: occupational medicine, Tarya who's well Tarya and they're married to
- 2:40Speaker 1: a doctor. And friends of the cast like NSA and
- 2:42Speaker 1: the Cold Guard Web and Carrie Welles new cast member
- 2:46Speaker 1: this season, Anila a song on the pilot first year.
- 2:50Speaker 1: She's a fashion block up but she's married to doctor.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Dr Simone Whitmore is on my show to talk about
- 2:55Speaker 1: COVID eight team as civil unrest. That's an aeron on
- 2:58Speaker 1: the season that she's experience personally as well, and the
- 3:01Speaker 1: upcoming season of marriage, which is they d see the
- 3:04Speaker 1: marriage to medicine and the realities of being a real
- 3:07Speaker 1: doctor on a reality show. Please working money making conversation
- 3:10Speaker 1: for the very first time, and I'm happy to have
- 3:12Speaker 1: her on the show. Dr Simone with more. How are
- 3:14Speaker 1: you doing I'm doing excellent and thank you so much
- 3:19Speaker 1: for having me. First of all, thank you for coming
- 3:21Speaker 1: on the show. And uh, you know, the reality shows
- 3:24Speaker 1: at one time would consider I thought it would be
- 3:26Speaker 1: a fad. I thought they wouldn't last. And at one
- 3:29Speaker 1: time there was really out of control. They were physically
- 3:31Speaker 1: out of control and a lot of a lot of noise,
- 3:34Speaker 1: a lot of custom, a lot of fussing, a lot
- 3:35Speaker 1: of drink throwing. And you decided to a being a
- 3:39Speaker 1: certified doctor into this room. What what drove you or
- 3:43Speaker 1: what was the motivation behind being a part of marriage
- 3:46Speaker 1: to medicine. The reason I was willing to film reality
- 3:50Speaker 1: TV is because I felt that little black girls in
- 3:55Speaker 1: America needed to see somebody that didn't come from money.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I came from an alcoholic dad, a single mom, and
- 4:06Speaker 1: I know how to have a good time and live
- 4:09Speaker 1: my life without the white coat. And I wanted little
- 4:13Speaker 1: brown girls in America to see that if I did it,
- 4:17Speaker 1: she can do it too. Well. You know you are
- 4:19Speaker 1: doing that. It's in this an eighth season, and it's
- 4:22Speaker 1: all about branding too and always about what people think
- 4:25Speaker 1: of you, and that this is not a negative interview.
- 4:27Speaker 1: These are just basic questions and that I'm just probing
- 4:31Speaker 1: and just trying to get your story out because I
- 4:33Speaker 1: think it's a really great story. I've watched and I've
- 4:36Speaker 1: watched the show offered on over the years, and my
- 4:38Speaker 1: background is casting and producing, so I'm very familiar with
- 4:41Speaker 1: your talents and a lot of your cast member. Quard
- 4:43Speaker 1: where Up has been on my show several times. I'm
- 4:45Speaker 1: a big fan of hers and so. But when you're
- 4:48Speaker 1: when you're practicing doctor like you are, you're on the
- 4:51Speaker 1: reality show, does it and you have a practice, does
- 4:54Speaker 1: it ever become an issue with the people that you are?
- 4:58Speaker 1: That you are that are your patients. So most of
- 5:01Speaker 1: my patients who have been with me for years, they
- 5:05Speaker 1: know who I am. I may say a little mild
- 5:08Speaker 1: cuss word in the office trying to be funny, and
- 5:13Speaker 1: my patients understand me. When I came to reality TV,
- 5:18Speaker 1: I came as my authentic self, no more, no less,
- 5:23Speaker 1: just my authentic self. And what is your authentic self?
- 5:26Speaker 1: I'm just asking. I love medicine, I love O B
- 5:31Speaker 1: G Y N. But I also like to have a
- 5:33Speaker 1: good time, hang out shop, have a cocktail after hour,
- 5:39Speaker 1: and I love the lab. Well, you know, I think
- 5:42Speaker 1: you're I think and hear what you're saying. You want
- 5:44Speaker 1: to break the stereotype, or if there is a stereotype,
- 5:47Speaker 1: you want to say, this is me, and it's all
- 5:48Speaker 1: right to be me with no with no um. I
- 5:51Speaker 1: guess you know. Standards are because some people kind of
- 5:54Speaker 1: put people on pedestals, And I think that's what you're
- 5:57Speaker 1: saying that please look at me. I'm Dr Simone with more,
- 6:01Speaker 1: I am, I am board certified, I am successful, I'm
- 6:04Speaker 1: happily married. I have a son about to go to college.
- 6:07Speaker 1: He's living a good life, and I live in a
- 6:09Speaker 1: beautiful home. Why can't I be me? Why can't I
- 6:12Speaker 1: be Why can't I dress this way and this fashion
- 6:15Speaker 1: fashion savvy? Why can't I eat this way? Why can't
- 6:18Speaker 1: that laugh out lot in public? So in your says,
- 6:20Speaker 1: you're feeling that there are certain standards that people hold
- 6:23Speaker 1: doctors to that should be pulled down or accepted, that
- 6:26Speaker 1: it's all right to be a human being. Not to
- 6:30Speaker 1: say that any standard that we have or the way
- 6:34Speaker 1: we see our doctors should be cooled down, but they
- 6:38Speaker 1: should be humanized. Man, we are human first. And I
- 6:42Speaker 1: have that doctor before my name. Now I have that
- 6:45Speaker 1: m D. After my name, but it's not on my
- 6:48Speaker 1: birth certificate. It does not define who I am. I'm
- 6:53Speaker 1: a wife, I'm a mother, I'm a sister, I'm a girlfriend.
- 6:57Speaker 1: And again, life is a out being well rounded. My
- 7:03Speaker 1: dad always taught me that be well rounded. Well, you
- 7:06Speaker 1: know the thing I got that impression of you, uh
- 7:08Speaker 1: and the first episode of the eight season, which I
- 7:11Speaker 1: did get a chance to see because I want to
- 7:13Speaker 1: make sure I was caught up to speed, you know,
- 7:14Speaker 1: where the characters were being developed, and first of the
- 7:17Speaker 1: first basically the first episode is your episode. Like I said,
- 7:20Speaker 1: you joked off air and said, you know you start
- 7:21Speaker 1: why not? And so it ended with you and you
- 7:24Speaker 1: and you're Jackie. Still got issues, heavenly got issues. You know,
- 7:31Speaker 1: your son about to go off to college. But I
- 7:33Speaker 1: thought that was a real tender moment in there, your
- 7:35Speaker 1: conversation with your son about racism, you know, because that's
- 7:38Speaker 1: a reality that you know. I have a daughter, she's uh,
- 7:41Speaker 1: you know, she's in college, and but even having a
- 7:44Speaker 1: young African American male that has to be even more
- 7:47Speaker 1: stressful knowing he's going to an environment that may have
- 7:50Speaker 1: seeds of racism. Talk about that and we're just talking
- 7:53Speaker 1: about parenting. That's me or not. We're both parents. But
- 7:56Speaker 1: you had a conversation with your son, how do you
- 7:58Speaker 1: feel and you know, lights on on and light I
- 8:02Speaker 1: felt that was a real conversation, was happing with him.
- 8:04Speaker 1: But that still has to be some hesitation about him
- 8:07Speaker 1: walking out that door. And because you want him to
- 8:10Speaker 1: come home. You wanted to when you when you call
- 8:12Speaker 1: that phone, you wanted to answer. You wanted to be
- 8:13Speaker 1: there when he's happy. You want to be there when
- 8:15Speaker 1: he said. But you want to be there when somebody's
- 8:17Speaker 1: doing it wrong because you didn't put eighteen years of
- 8:20Speaker 1: your life into him or bring him into this world
- 8:22Speaker 1: for ignorance to step into, you know, shortening his life
- 8:26Speaker 1: or causing difficulty in his life. We've always taught our
- 8:31Speaker 1: sons to respect authority, to not run your mouth, not
- 8:36Speaker 1: to talk back when a police or a teacher or
- 8:41Speaker 1: any of those is talking to you. But one of
- 8:44Speaker 1: the most important things we try to teach our sons
- 8:49Speaker 1: do not have an encounter with the police. So it
- 8:52Speaker 1: means abiding by the law, not speeding when you're driving
- 8:57Speaker 1: down the highway. And we had always thought if we
- 9:01Speaker 1: taught our boys be respectful, follow the rules, that they
- 9:06Speaker 1: would always come home. And George Floyd that video last
- 9:12Speaker 1: year showed us that you don't have to be doing
- 9:16Speaker 1: anything illegal, you don't have to be running, you don't
- 9:20Speaker 1: have to be talking back, and you could still lose
- 9:24Speaker 1: your life based on someone else's perception of what they
- 9:30Speaker 1: think a black man is. And that's you know, being
- 9:33Speaker 1: a black man. And I think then you and and
- 9:36Speaker 1: at the end of the premium episode of the eighth season,
- 9:39Speaker 1: they do the fellows get around talking about, you know,
- 9:42Speaker 1: being pulled over being a black man in America. The
- 9:45Speaker 1: reality is that you are raising a young black man
- 9:48Speaker 1: in America and he's going to school. Tell us about
- 9:52Speaker 1: the school that he's going to, you know, not in
- 9:54Speaker 1: the environment, and how what makes you feel comfortable about
- 9:58Speaker 1: him going because he has to feel comfortable he's going, okay,
- 10:01Speaker 1: but what also is making you feel uncomfortable about the
- 10:03Speaker 1: environment that he's going to. So the school is Lee
- 10:07Speaker 1: University in Cleveland, Tennessee. Cleveland, Tennessee is a small town
- 10:13Speaker 1: in Tennessee that's near Chattanooga. But I just remember that
- 10:20Speaker 1: during the pandemic the school was closed. We drove up
- 10:23Speaker 1: to Cleveland, Tennessee just to drive around the campus to
- 10:27Speaker 1: see what it was like since he didn't get the
- 10:29Speaker 1: traditional tour with school open. And I just remember as
- 10:34Speaker 1: we're driving through this small town of Cleveland seeing all
- 10:39Speaker 1: of the Confederate flags. So when I saw those, of course,
- 10:45Speaker 1: I became concerned. Downtown Cleveland has a Confederate monument which
- 10:51Speaker 1: is walking This is from the school, and it's a
- 10:55Speaker 1: small school, majority white. It's a Christian school. And the
- 11:01Speaker 1: reason we were willing to take the chance for him
- 11:04Speaker 1: to go to the university. Number one, you just hope,
- 11:09Speaker 1: you really hope that people who are claiming to be
- 11:12Speaker 1: Christians are Christians somehow that God is touching their minds,
- 11:16Speaker 1: their souls, their bodies to really live a Christian life.
- 11:21Speaker 1: But you know, there were some other basketball players whom
- 11:24Speaker 1: he had spoken with over the summer who had not
- 11:28Speaker 1: had any racial encounters, and we're not having any difficult
- 11:31Speaker 1: time on campus. Is the reason we decided that it
- 11:35Speaker 1: would be okay for him to attend thee University. You know,
- 11:38Speaker 1: the interesting thing about it is that this is part
- 11:40Speaker 1: of Mary to Medicine. This is a part of the
- 11:43Speaker 1: lessons of life. Lessons are relatable to it because this
- 11:46Speaker 1: that that storyline was relatable to me. My daughter was,
- 11:49Speaker 1: you know, um a tennis phenomen at sixteen, and so
- 11:53Speaker 1: she was going out there playing that she blew out
- 11:55Speaker 1: a knee nineteen and now she's in college and very
- 11:57Speaker 1: happy for her. But the reality is that where can
- 12:01Speaker 1: you send your sonday he won't experience racism indirectly or
- 12:04Speaker 1: direct place you feel me. So so you're you're basically
- 12:08Speaker 1: and you're and your husband basically saying, yes, we're uncomfortable,
- 12:11Speaker 1: but this is life. You know, we hope we've raised them.
- 12:14Speaker 1: And I'm not putting any words in your mouth. I'm
- 12:16Speaker 1: just talking like a parent that hopefully we raised them
- 12:19Speaker 1: with the values like you told him. You know, if
- 12:21Speaker 1: it's a third or five drift, thirty or five son, okay,
- 12:24Speaker 1: you know a voi ignorant for cop pulls you over
- 12:26Speaker 1: tend to understanding world, say yes, sir, no, sir, tell
- 12:29Speaker 1: you get out the car, Get out the car. Don't
- 12:31Speaker 1: be playing loud music unnecessarily. So these are the rules
- 12:34Speaker 1: that we lived by because of the color of our skin.
- 12:36Speaker 1: And like you said, all America, all of America, because
- 12:39Speaker 1: it was involved and it was in the uproar, including
- 12:41Speaker 1: white people. When they finally saw, and that's I think
- 12:43Speaker 1: that we all were happy finally when you saw that
- 12:47Speaker 1: on top of COVID. Because you are a legitimate doctor,
- 12:50Speaker 1: how does that affect your practice and also your daily
- 12:53Speaker 1: life when COVID came on top of it reality, because
- 12:56Speaker 1: we all thought KOVID was gonna be a couple of months,
- 12:58Speaker 1: we were turned to normal. It's not right right. Working
- 13:03Speaker 1: in the medical field during a pandemic has been an
- 13:06Speaker 1: interesting thing, you know, continually, I don't work in fear
- 13:10Speaker 1: at all, but just trying to make sure that I
- 13:15Speaker 1: stayed up to date and educated on this virus because
- 13:20Speaker 1: it felt like it was changing. Things were changing in
- 13:23Speaker 1: the medical field week by week early on, and just
- 13:27Speaker 1: making sure that I updated my patients and encouraged them
- 13:30Speaker 1: to stay safe. You know, I have pregnant patients during
- 13:34Speaker 1: this time, and I don't want to see them sick.
- 13:38Speaker 1: And sometimes the young people are a little harder to
- 13:41Speaker 1: convince that the virus is real and deadly. It's finally
- 13:46Speaker 1: here the season of celebration, and no matter how you
- 13:50Speaker 1: celebrate with family and friends, whether you're preparing for reys
- 13:53Speaker 1: magos or karamu lighting, the manura are going to midnight
- 13:57Speaker 1: mass cools has just what you need to make those
- 14:00Speaker 1: traditions special. Plus you'll find gifts for all your loved ones.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Send warm wishes with cozy fleeces, sweaters, loungeware, blankets and throws.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Support minority owned or founded brands by giving gifts from
- 14:13Speaker 1: Human Nation and shame moisture, or treat them to everyone's
- 14:16Speaker 1: favorite active wear from top brands like Nike, Adidas, and
- 14:20Speaker 1: under Armour. And in the spirit of giving, Coals Cares
- 14:24Speaker 1: is donating eight million dollars to local nonprofits nationwide committed
- 14:28Speaker 1: to the health and well being of our communities. No
- 14:31Speaker 1: matter how you celebrate, when you shop at Coals, you're
- 14:34Speaker 1: right where you belong. So this season, give with all
- 14:37Speaker 1: your heart with great gifts from Coals or Coals dot com.
- 14:41Speaker 1: If I could be you and you could be me
- 14:44Speaker 1: for just one hour, if you could find a way
- 14:46Speaker 1: to get inside each other's mind, walcome mile in my shoes.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Wacome mile in my shoes Shoes. We've all felt left out,
- 14:56Speaker 1: and for some that feeling lasts more than a moment.
- 15:00Speaker 1: We can change that learn how it Belonging begins with
- 15:03Speaker 1: us dot Org. Brought to you by the AD Council
- 15:06Speaker 1: welcome out in the machines. Hi, everyone, Al Roker here
- 15:13Speaker 1: as a guy with his own catchphrase. I appreciate that
- 15:15Speaker 1: Smokey's only said only you can prevent wildfires, but I'm
- 15:20Speaker 1: filling in because there's a lot more to report, like
- 15:23Speaker 1: when they're parched or windy conditions out there. You gotta
- 15:26Speaker 1: be extra careful with things like burning yard waist. After all,
- 15:30Speaker 1: wildfires can start anywhere, even in your neck of the woods.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Go to Smokey Bear dot com to learn more about
- 15:36Speaker 1: wildfire prevention brought to you by the U. S. Forest Service,
- 15:39Speaker 1: your state Forrester, and the ad Council. We know, isn't
- 15:43Speaker 1: it when we all immortal? When we that age, you know,
- 15:46Speaker 1: we get safe and get up. You know, I should
- 15:48Speaker 1: tell fras you I a should get a flu I
- 15:50Speaker 1: go play a game of basketball and they say, sweat
- 15:52Speaker 1: it out of me, and so I trying to sweat
- 15:54Speaker 1: it out of me now because I'll be laying on
- 15:56Speaker 1: the court doc. You know. But the beauty of this
- 16:01Speaker 1: show is that you have friends. You know, one of
- 16:03Speaker 1: your friends, and this was one of the lead storylines
- 16:06Speaker 1: of the opening season, was your friendship with Jackie twenty
- 16:10Speaker 1: three years in and I'm just to let you know
- 16:13Speaker 1: that in the in the opening episode, Jackie was constantly
- 16:17Speaker 1: talking about getting back with you, talking about I just
- 16:21Speaker 1: want to reconcile, and then they showed you constantly, never
- 16:24Speaker 1: saying that they com Well, you know, I don't know
- 16:27Speaker 1: what it is what it is, and you know, and
- 16:30Speaker 1: as a producer and an editor, I know they could
- 16:32Speaker 1: play characters to develop storylines. And so this is a
- 16:36Speaker 1: person you've known be twenty three years. She's an original
- 16:38Speaker 1: member of the show along with yourself. Where do you
- 16:41Speaker 1: go when you see these storylines being developed? And we're
- 16:43Speaker 1: gonna get to Heavenly in a minute. But I want
- 16:45Speaker 1: to talk about the friendship of Jackie and Simone m
- 16:50Speaker 1: So I again, I come to reality TV as my
- 16:54Speaker 1: authentic self. I'm not going to fake a friendship. I
- 16:59Speaker 1: am going to pretend to make up unless my heart
- 17:03Speaker 1: is really in it. And Jackie and I have known
- 17:07Speaker 1: each other a very long time, and of all the
- 17:10Speaker 1: cast on this show, she knows me the best. I
- 17:16Speaker 1: know her the best, and I did not want to
- 17:21Speaker 1: make up for TV's sake. I just wasn't interested either.
- 17:27Speaker 1: We were gonna have a genuine sit down conversation or not.
- 17:31Speaker 1: But I didn't want to make up just for TV's sake.
- 17:35Speaker 1: I'm just asking now. I don't know that, I'm just asking,
- 17:37Speaker 1: So what is makeup for TV sake versus having a
- 17:40Speaker 1: genuine sit down? Would it be on camera or would
- 17:43Speaker 1: it be off camera between you and jack Um? It
- 17:47Speaker 1: could be either one quite frankly, because again, I'm going
- 17:51Speaker 1: to express my real thoughts and opinions. And it doesn't
- 17:55Speaker 1: matter whether a camera is rolling or not. When you
- 17:58Speaker 1: say true to who you are, it doesn't matter whether
- 18:01Speaker 1: a camera's present or not. Well, you're showing that. Now,
- 18:05Speaker 1: you've shown that. Now heavenly? How is heavenly? She was
- 18:09Speaker 1: a dentist, you know, y'all y'all joke about that a
- 18:11Speaker 1: lot throughout the seasons, though we just said Dr Danis.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Even Anila came in cracking jokes, gonna crack jokes. She's
- 18:18Speaker 1: a blogger, okay, gonna crack jokes on the dentist. Um,
- 18:23Speaker 1: So how does she get in between the two of you? Guys?
- 18:27Speaker 1: Did I miss that episode of some Well? So, in
- 18:32Speaker 1: actual in actuality, I don't think that Heavenly came between
- 18:37Speaker 1: me and Jackie. And that is how I felt last year,
- 18:41Speaker 1: but in the pandemic, I spent more time at home.
- 18:44Speaker 1: I was able to think about things and get my
- 18:49Speaker 1: feelings in check. If you will, and basically I mean,
- 18:54Speaker 1: Heaviley and I have gone back and forth, back and forth,
- 18:57Speaker 1: getting along not getting along over the year since she
- 19:00Speaker 1: started the show on season two. As a matter of fact,
- 19:05Speaker 1: she hated me and Jackie when she started, we hated her.
- 19:09Speaker 1: The feeling was mutual, but over the years we had
- 19:13Speaker 1: all grown to become close friends. But Heaviley and I
- 19:17Speaker 1: would get into it one time for a couple of
- 19:20Speaker 1: months on in our camera, and Jackie always gave me
- 19:26Speaker 1: her thoughts and opinions. She would tell me, I think
- 19:30Speaker 1: you shouldn't even be taking this stuff heavily saying too serious.
- 19:35Speaker 1: You shouldn't be doing this, or you should be doing that,
- 19:38Speaker 1: And she always talked to both of us. This time,
- 19:42Speaker 1: my friend of twenty three years decided she didn't have
- 19:47Speaker 1: any words on it because I guess she didn't want
- 19:50Speaker 1: to hurt my feelings. But she knows me. She had
- 19:53Speaker 1: never been her tongue before. And you know that expression,
- 19:58Speaker 1: cat got your tongue. I'll just leave you with the cash. Well,
- 20:03Speaker 1: you know what, y'all didn't have a sit down. When
- 20:05Speaker 1: she said that she was gonna be it was on
- 20:07Speaker 1: camera that she didn't want to make a decision, she
- 20:10Speaker 1: want to make it, and then you took that very
- 20:12Speaker 1: personal and so I see, now you know Dr Heavinly,
- 20:15Speaker 1: who is a dentist by the way, is uh is
- 20:19Speaker 1: reveling in this breakup. I think she's reveling and driving
- 20:22Speaker 1: a wedge between the relationship and personally, and I pertually,
- 20:26Speaker 1: I don't think Jackie sees that. Am I correcting assuming
- 20:29Speaker 1: that I think Jackie is not eve or she's or
- 20:32Speaker 1: she has developed a wall of stubbornness to say that
- 20:37Speaker 1: she's not gonna be bothered. So I don't think. I
- 20:40Speaker 1: definitely think Jackie is aware of what Heavenly is doing.
- 20:46Speaker 1: But Heavenly is also Jackie's bulldog, right, and so maybe
- 20:53Speaker 1: that is just a strategy that you would rather have
- 20:56Speaker 1: this bulldog who defends you. Even on of days you're wrong,
- 21:01Speaker 1: She's still defending you. Adoption of teams from foster care
- 21:06Speaker 1: is a topic not enough people know about, and we're

- 22:10Speaker 1: almost on time. This morning. Mom is coming out the
- 22:13Speaker 1: front door, strong with a double arm kid carry. Looks
- 22:16Speaker 1: like dad has the bags. Daughter is bringing up the rear.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Oh but the diaper bag wasn't closed. Diapers and toys
- 22:23Speaker 1: are everywhere. Oh but mom has just nailed the perfect
- 22:28Speaker 1: car seat buckle for the toddler. And now the eldest daughter,
- 22:31Speaker 1: who looks to be about nine or ten, has secured
- 22:34Speaker 1: herself in the booster seat. Dad SIPs the bag clothes
- 22:37Speaker 1: and they're off. Ah, but looks like Mom doesn't realize
- 22:41Speaker 1: her coffee cup is still on the roof of the
- 22:43Speaker 1: car and there it goes. Oh, that's a shame. That
- 22:47Speaker 1: mug was a fan favorite. Don't sweat the small stuff,

- 23:06Speaker 1: is called money Making Conversation. You are an entrepreneur, a
- 23:09Speaker 1: small business owner. Let's talk about that whole process of
- 23:12Speaker 1: dealing with because people want to hear the Boy show
- 23:15Speaker 1: about advice. What would you give and old starting to practice?
- 23:18Speaker 1: How would you hire people? I always tell people you
- 23:21Speaker 1: gotta have a great r HR person when you you
- 23:23Speaker 1: gotta have a great accountant. That's my early notes to
- 23:25Speaker 1: anybody's starting to start, especially accountant, don't be sitting over
- 23:28Speaker 1: there talking to trying to do books by yourself and
- 23:30Speaker 1: you've never done books before. So as a as a
- 23:34Speaker 1: as an entrepreneur who start up because you represent you know,
- 23:37Speaker 1: the fastest growing population and entrepreneurship or African American females.
- 23:41Speaker 1: And you are an African American female, you are star,
- 23:44Speaker 1: you are brand. Talk about being a small business owner
- 23:47Speaker 1: just when you started, but also now doing COVID nineteen.
- 23:51Speaker 1: What I would talk, what I would recommend for anybody
- 23:55Speaker 1: who is starting a business, doing as much research as
- 24:00Speaker 1: you possibly can before you start your business. Know the
- 24:05Speaker 1: industry you're going into. Know some of the pitfalls of
- 24:08Speaker 1: the industry you're going into. And for me, I was
- 24:12Speaker 1: already practicing medicine before I opened up a business. You
- 24:18Speaker 1: can't even imagine how hard it's going to be until
- 24:23Speaker 1: you actually open those doors. But I do agree with
- 24:26Speaker 1: you that you have to have an accountant who gives
- 24:30Speaker 1: you advice regularly. And what I like to say is
- 24:34Speaker 1: count all your pennies, look for your pennies, figure out
- 24:38Speaker 1: ways when you're buying supplies that you could save money
- 24:42Speaker 1: because you may be only buying from this supplier, but
- 24:47Speaker 1: then somebody over here has a cheaper learned how to
- 24:50Speaker 1: build relationships so that when you need help you can
- 24:54Speaker 1: get help. You need a banking relationship, that relationship with
- 24:59Speaker 1: an account mountain. You need relationships with people in the
- 25:03Speaker 1: industry who are doing the exact same thing you're doing,
- 25:07Speaker 1: just to get advice on the pitfalls when they actually happened,
- 25:12Speaker 1: how to get out of those pitfalls, and just know
- 25:16Speaker 1: that no matter what happens, you can always depend on
- 25:20Speaker 1: yourself in business for yourself. There you go. Now when
- 25:24Speaker 1: one going closing question is about you didn't plan on.
- 25:27Speaker 1: Of course we talked about budget. You said always count
- 25:29Speaker 1: your penis no where every penny is. We did not think,
- 25:32Speaker 1: and I'm saying, I'm a business owner. I did not
- 25:34Speaker 1: see masking my budget. I didn't see hand sanitizing my budget.
- 25:39Speaker 1: I didn't see working from home and my budget and
- 25:42Speaker 1: telling medicine. I'm sure we're picked up strongly in your business,
- 25:45Speaker 1: but like you said, you're dealing with with you know
- 25:47Speaker 1: O B. G. Ryan profession, So tell the medicine almost
- 25:50Speaker 1: like what is that? So? How did that affect your
- 25:53Speaker 1: business model and also your employees? How did you work
- 25:57Speaker 1: through that, Like I was able to do teleconference because
- 26:00Speaker 1: I'm just dealing with graphics and I'm a production company,
- 26:03Speaker 1: But you're in medicine. How did you deal with that
- 26:05Speaker 1: and how did your patients deal with that? So definitely
- 26:10Speaker 1: finding PPE to purchase and purchasing PPE was an additional expense.
- 26:16Speaker 1: But what I tell any anybody who's in business for themselves,
- 26:21Speaker 1: always save for a rainy day, because if you have savings,
- 26:25Speaker 1: when you run into these additional expenses, it just shouldn't
- 26:29Speaker 1: be that big of a deal. So you either have
- 26:32Speaker 1: the savings or you have a credit line with the
- 26:34Speaker 1: bank available to help you in a in a financial needs.
- 26:40Speaker 1: But with staff, I tried to stay calm and try
- 26:44Speaker 1: to reassure them. For me, with pregnant patients, I was
- 26:48Speaker 1: not able to do all of the visits using telemedicine.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Surely we did some, but not all. And what I
- 26:57Speaker 1: did was we continue in YouTube, come to the office,
- 27:02Speaker 1: We shortened the office hours, and I continue to make
- 27:05Speaker 1: payroll for the full forty hours a week. But again,
- 27:09Speaker 1: just looking for resources out there, there were a ton
- 27:13Speaker 1: of resources available to small businesses. I applied for the
- 27:18Speaker 1: P P P loan my big bank didn't give it
- 27:21Speaker 1: to me. So I went to my small bank. And
- 27:23Speaker 1: again I have two banks. I have the big bank,
- 27:28Speaker 1: I have the small bank. Nobody told me to do
- 27:31Speaker 1: it that way. That is just one of those life
- 27:34Speaker 1: lessons that I learned early on in practice. And I've
- 27:38Speaker 1: been in solo practice since two thousand four, So you
- 27:42Speaker 1: learn things, and there are always gonna be hiccups and
- 27:46Speaker 1: speed bumps. You just have to learn something from every
- 27:51Speaker 1: speed bump in the road. Well, you know, I gotta
- 27:54Speaker 1: close on that. Said was my last question, But I
- 27:56Speaker 1: had to bring this up because my wife is important
- 27:59Speaker 1: in my life. You know, when those speed bumps. As
- 28:01Speaker 1: you're talking about those speed bumps, you gotta turn to
- 28:03Speaker 1: somebody for some truth and sometimes for some advice. Sometimes
- 28:07Speaker 1: that truth is not what you want to hear, but
- 28:09Speaker 1: it also comes with good advice because you know that
- 28:12Speaker 1: person is gonna be honest with you. So I'm leaving
- 28:14Speaker 1: our question to your husband, who plays an amazing support
- 28:17Speaker 1: the role. I'm gonna just tell you, doctor, I'm I'm
- 28:19Speaker 1: a fan of yours. I've always been a fan of yours.
- 28:21Speaker 1: And when you had that conversation with your son when
- 28:24Speaker 1: he was shooting the basketball. I was over the roof
- 28:26Speaker 1: with you because that was pure. That was pure honestly
- 28:29Speaker 1: to me, you know, because it was relatable to me,
- 28:32Speaker 1: and uh and it and it and it, and it
- 28:34Speaker 1: was a seed that bore out of your husband being there.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Because African American young men need that male, that male.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Look how to treat women? Look how what you do
- 28:43Speaker 1: in all these different situations. To talk about your strong
- 28:46Speaker 1: support group. You know my man, talk about him right
- 28:49Speaker 1: quick before we close it out. So Cecone and I
- 28:53Speaker 1: have been married for twenty five years and he has
- 28:56Speaker 1: definitely been a great sounding board when I asked him
- 29:00Speaker 1: about business advice, and he loves to do research. But
- 29:05Speaker 1: as any marriage goals, we have certainly had our struggles.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Our marriage actually came to the brink of the brink
- 29:15Speaker 1: of a divorce, which I shared on reality TV, and
- 29:20Speaker 1: I was so thankful for this reality TV family who
- 29:24Speaker 1: helped us to realize that we were being stubborn. We
- 29:27Speaker 1: had stopped listening to one another, and we were able
- 29:31Speaker 1: not only to reconcile, but to make some differences in
- 29:36Speaker 1: our marriage so that we could keep on going in
- 29:39Speaker 1: and not just keep going, but keep going strong with
- 29:42Speaker 1: my friend. Thank you for coming on money Making Conversations.
- 29:45Speaker 1: I just want to really lay it on the line
- 29:47Speaker 1: because I know you do a lot of interviews and
- 29:49Speaker 1: and I try not to be fake when I bring people.
- 29:50Speaker 1: I try to do my research, I try to acknowledge
- 29:53Speaker 1: the fact, and I try to give good questions to
- 29:55Speaker 1: allow you to move the conversation forward. But more importantly,
- 29:58Speaker 1: I only want people in my shot. I want to
- 29:59Speaker 1: talk to so and I definitely wanted to. I want
