Latest / Direct From Hollywood with Ryan Seacrest / How Brett Goldstein Handles Writing for His Character Roy Kent on ‘Ted Lasso’
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Direct from Hollywood with Ryan Seacrest. It's uncommon on TV
- 0:04Speaker 1: shows for a star to also be a writer on
- 0:07Speaker 1: the show, unless to the face or creator of a sitcom,
- 0:09Speaker 1: but Ted Lasso is an exception, with Brett Goldstein playing
- 0:12Speaker 1: Roy Kent and serving as a key member of the
- 0:14Speaker 1: writing room, and the same goes with Brendan Hunt, who
- 0:16Speaker 1: plays Coach Beard. One reason shows often avoid it is
- 0:19Speaker 1: that it can create a dynamic where somebody writes for
- 0:22Speaker 1: their benefit or their character rather than the show as
- 0:25Speaker 1: a whole, and they make other writers suspicious that you're
- 0:27Speaker 1: doing that. So how Brett navigate that, he tells Variety.
- 0:30Speaker 1: For season one, none of the other writers knew I'd
- 0:32Speaker 1: be playing Roy. Season two, they obviously knew I'm Roy,
- 0:35Speaker 1: So I've tried not to pitch much Roy, because I
- 0:37Speaker 1: truly do love all the characters and I'm invested in them.
- 0:40Speaker 1: But one of the writers, Sasha Garon, always knew how
- 0:43Speaker 1: I felt about a Roy Kent story pitch, in the
- 0:45Speaker 1: same way if I pitched Coach Beard to Brendan almost subconsciously,
- 0:48Speaker 1: I look at him, Sasha says, she knows if I
- 0:51Speaker 1: like a pitch based on the angle of my eyebrows.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Season three of Ted Lasso stream on Apple tv Plus
- 0:56Speaker 1: that's direct from Hollywood.
