- 1:07Speaker 1: talk with Richard McDonald on Moneymaking Conversation. All this show
- 1:11Speaker 1: is getting specially is taken off. And um, so I
- 1:14Speaker 1: just used the word blessed because I've surrounded myself with
- 1:16Speaker 1: people who believe in me and it was just a dream.
- 1:19Speaker 1: And the dream is taking off and be recognized as
- 1:21Speaker 1: a very popular show, not on rad not only on radio,
- 1:24Speaker 1: but in podcast and uh and um, I'm just uh,
- 1:28Speaker 1: I'm blessed my next guest. Over the course of a
- 1:31Speaker 1: career spanning more than thirty years, he has solidified his
- 1:35Speaker 1: status as one of the world's premier performers. He's an
- 1:38Speaker 1: award winning actor and comedian, writer, producer, director, and philanthropists
- 1:43Speaker 1: whose career spans television, live performances and film. He's currently
- 1:48Speaker 1: started on the hit CBS sitcom The Neighborhood, which is
- 1:51Speaker 1: TV's number one new comedy and airs on Monday nights.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Please welcome back back back to Money Making Conversations. Cedric
- 1:59Speaker 1: the entertained need all the noise. We're like, we're the
- 2:09Speaker 1: club smoke to come down. You said, New Year's Eve.
- 2:21Speaker 1: I'm in the hardest shows to do. Brother's a comedian
- 2:23Speaker 1: the New Year's Eve show? Who know it? Man? People
- 2:27Speaker 1: be up, you know, people be drunk already, and then
- 2:31Speaker 1: they loud and everybody got a loud outfit, so they
- 2:36Speaker 1: and the outfits loud, and so people don't understand this
- 2:38Speaker 1: that as a comedian, you know, we operate on response.
- 2:41Speaker 1: If you could see, you can see him through New
- 2:43Speaker 1: Year's Eve. But as a comedian, you need people to
- 2:46Speaker 1: laugh back at you. And about fifteen minutes before as midnight,
- 2:49Speaker 1: they start looking at they watch it, they start planning
- 2:52Speaker 1: on you, and you need them to keep listening to you.
- 2:55Speaker 1: So your biggest check you ever gets a performer, right,
- 2:58Speaker 1: centric is New Year's Eve? Boy, Right, that's a big
- 3:02Speaker 1: check of the year. But then like you know, then
- 3:05Speaker 1: you got three fo people in the clock just wrong.
- 3:08Speaker 1: You know this is a level thirty five, all this
- 3:15Speaker 1: loud counting. It ain't twill thirty years. I was just listening.
- 3:20Speaker 1: I was just looking back man, and um, you know,
- 3:23Speaker 1: because I had a comedy club in Houston, Texas in
- 3:26Speaker 1: two It's called Hip Hop Comedy Stops. And this young
- 3:29Speaker 1: man out of St. Louis, Uh, you know, I was
- 3:31Speaker 1: going I didn't know anything. I just started the comedy
- 3:33Speaker 1: Club because Death Comedy Jam was hot, and they told
- 3:37Speaker 1: me the guys St. Louis is funny and I and
- 3:41Speaker 1: that's when he was the first out of town act
- 3:43Speaker 1: that I booked. And Cedric, you know, you come from
- 3:47Speaker 1: the corporate world. A lot of people don't know that
- 3:48Speaker 1: Cedric has a college degree or corporate world. And he
- 3:51Speaker 1: kind of like me. I left IBM, I would kind
- 3:53Speaker 1: of a college degree in mathematics, and a lot of
- 3:55Speaker 1: people don't know that. They just see the funny side
- 3:57Speaker 1: of him and they don't see a serious side of Central.
- 4:00Speaker 1: And so just like people don't understand the serious side
- 4:02Speaker 1: of me. But they brought into because I managed town
- 4:04Speaker 1: like Steve so go okay, he's smart, you know. And
- 4:07Speaker 1: so and when I look when I look at your
- 4:09Speaker 1: brand and you had to tell people that you're gonna
- 4:12Speaker 1: lead a corporate space to tell jokes, how what was
- 4:15Speaker 1: that reaction? I mean it was hard. I had worked
- 4:20Speaker 1: for a Rico Corporation in the early areas of Facts Machine,
- 4:24Speaker 1: so it was a big company. Thanks was new, it
- 4:27Speaker 1: was hot. You can sell Facts Machine to anybody because
- 4:31Speaker 1: it was like selling somebody a matchic trick. They was like,
- 4:33Speaker 1: oh yeah, I won't wanted them. I get I get,
- 4:36Speaker 1: I get the letter right now. I ain't okay, but
- 4:39Speaker 1: you can send my animos right now, yo. So people
- 4:42Speaker 1: like to start loving them. So then I started working
- 4:44Speaker 1: for State Farm uh as a claim of adjustion, and
- 4:48Speaker 1: you know, and at that time, you know, you can
- 4:51Speaker 1: see yourself being trapped. I started doing new comedy at
- 4:54Speaker 1: the same time I was doing State Farm, and I
- 4:57Speaker 1: saw myself getting more up in the corporate ladder, manly
- 5:02Speaker 1: because of my personality resha And it wasn't really like
- 5:05Speaker 1: I was good, but people like working with me, and
- 5:08Speaker 1: you realize that that's kind of it. Gon't like that,
- 5:10Speaker 1: it's who you know. Like, people go who you know? Well,
- 5:12Speaker 1: people go, well, if I'm gonna be you know, a supervisue,
- 5:16Speaker 1: we take four troops a year. I'd rather go with
- 5:19Speaker 1: Cedric then with Bob. So I'm gonna move set up.
- 5:22Speaker 1: And I'm like, so, you cat, you were a young man.
- 5:25Speaker 1: You're about to start getting trapped making sixty seveny thousands
- 5:28Speaker 1: a year. You're like, if I started making this money,
- 5:30Speaker 1: I'll never go for my dreams. So I had to
- 5:34Speaker 1: make that. I had to make that decision right around
- 5:37Speaker 1: that early in my life, like y'all, I could take
- 5:39Speaker 1: this money and kind of you know, live the safe
- 5:42Speaker 1: life and you know, get the you know, get the
- 5:45Speaker 1: house with you, pick your fence and cool little you
- 5:47Speaker 1: know Christ with three hunting and that's gonna be my life,
- 5:50Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I can go for this dream.
- 5:53Speaker 1: So I did now and I and that ain't hate
- 5:56Speaker 1: no Christ for three hundreds that just want just because
- 6:00Speaker 1: I was the same space. I was like, okay, because
- 6:02Speaker 1: you know you you nobody tells you can be a comedian.
- 6:05Speaker 1: And if you're in a black community, you know that's
- 6:07Speaker 1: not an option. That's not an option because Richard Pride
- 6:09Speaker 1: is the comedian and the Murford the comedian. Who are you?
- 6:13Speaker 1: Who are you? That's when people tell you that yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 6:19Speaker 1: you know black people said, black people will kill your
- 6:23Speaker 1: dreams sometimes, boy, shut up and going there and do
- 6:26Speaker 1: what you're gonna do. You ain't rich and Proude, You
- 6:27Speaker 1: ain't there a Murphy and and and it's really important
- 6:30Speaker 1: that you understand that that you can't do that. That's
- 6:33Speaker 1: why I do the show that people you can understand
- 6:35Speaker 1: that you can be there because sometimes we as a
- 6:37Speaker 1: people who will slow down the opportunity to be be
- 6:40Speaker 1: be successful, like because they did we did, they didn't
- 6:43Speaker 1: do it, and they see the difficulties of being accomplished,
- 6:47Speaker 1: and then they tell you what you can't do. And
- 6:49Speaker 1: that's why I always tell kids. I tell parents, don't
- 6:52Speaker 1: tell your kids what they can't do. Try to help
- 6:54Speaker 1: them do what they want to do, and we all win.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Because that's that's your philosophy. Man, that's always loved about you.
- 7:00Speaker 1: That's a good shot, that's a that's a good shooters book. Man.
- 7:02Speaker 1: You ever write that, well, you know, I'm gonna tell
- 7:05Speaker 1: you something saying, you know, when I see you, when
- 7:07Speaker 1: I'm go when the ride broke out up there in St. Louis,
- 7:10Speaker 1: you know, you said inside the jokes, you said inside
- 7:13Speaker 1: the jokes and went on TV. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 7:18Speaker 1: you know. And still still really involved in that kind
- 7:20Speaker 1: of advocacy right now because you know, policing, not to
- 7:24Speaker 1: jump the subject, but policing and the way that we
- 7:27Speaker 1: live in the world is that people can't power, sources,
- 7:30Speaker 1: can't be belonged to just somebody with the badge or
- 7:34Speaker 1: the power right now because they're still a human being
- 7:36Speaker 1: and so they if they if they feel protected you know,
- 7:39Speaker 1: by status, by you know, um, you know, being a
- 7:44Speaker 1: part of one organization. Then the rest of the world
- 7:47Speaker 1: is outside of that. And that's where you gotta be
- 7:50Speaker 1: careful about allowing you know, police to you know, to
- 7:54Speaker 1: be able to through their job. But King, they don't
- 7:57Speaker 1: have the freedom to say I was scared of my
- 7:59Speaker 1: life and therefore I took I had the whole right
- 8:02Speaker 1: to take somebody else in side. That's a thing, that's
- 8:04Speaker 1: a big responsibility. Right there, man on the phone, is
- 8:08Speaker 1: my man, Cedric the entertainer here? Like I said, he's
- 8:11Speaker 1: still Cedric. You're still on the Last O g right
- 8:13Speaker 1: with Tracy Morgan on still on the Last as well.
- 8:17Speaker 1: That new season will be coming on start next month.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Uh second season of The Last O Funny Show. Definitely
- 8:23Speaker 1: y'all wanted to tune into that, but no doubt but
- 8:25Speaker 1: Monday night now when CBS the number one show, Yeah,
- 8:30Speaker 1: teen was beautiful to you. You know what, And you've
- 8:35Speaker 1: done man, You've done some stuff. Boy, I tell you
- 8:37Speaker 1: you may not have a top that super Bowl commercial
- 8:40Speaker 1: Barca boy, that Supermove Merger that that puts you on
- 8:43Speaker 1: the spot right there at elevation. You be our Kings
- 8:46Speaker 1: to comedy right there. But man, what you're doing now,
- 8:50Speaker 1: what's that it really did? It's interesting because it's still
- 8:55Speaker 1: to this year. It was in the top five, like
- 8:58Speaker 1: they do evaluation best super Go commercially and that commercial
- 9:02Speaker 1: still to a strong So that's that's one of the
- 9:05Speaker 1: new kind of things. That's a blessing. Man. Oh yeah,
- 9:07Speaker 1: because I read that. I read that article. I went, wow, Man,
- 9:10Speaker 1: that's that's powerful. That you know, because because like I said,
- 9:13Speaker 1: you're the guy you know that in life that that
- 9:16Speaker 1: you know, like I said, you stay far people saying
- 9:18Speaker 1: why are you gonna go? You need to stay man,
- 9:20Speaker 1: that there's no guarantees, are you co jothing? I believe
- 9:23Speaker 1: in me. I believe I can do this, and that's
- 9:25Speaker 1: important to people to hear you say that. Man, Yeah, exactly,
- 9:30Speaker 1: and it's it's it's but I did it, you know,
- 9:33Speaker 1: like I said, also tell people this. I didn't do
- 9:35Speaker 1: it like frivolously. Like I I had created a strategy.
- 9:39Speaker 1: I started local, I performed and got my name up
- 9:44Speaker 1: locally so that I had like, uh, you know a
- 9:47Speaker 1: little bit of a cash flow that I could do
- 9:49Speaker 1: around Louis. Then I then I spread it out a
- 9:51Speaker 1: little bit Chicago, you know, Memphis, places I can run
- 9:55Speaker 1: down and make a little money, make sure I can
- 9:57Speaker 1: always pay my bills. And then I created a national platform.
- 10:01Speaker 1: But I didn't leave my job or none of those
- 10:04Speaker 1: things because my job hadn't showed us. Man, come on,
- 10:07Speaker 1: get little and I go to the doctor. I wasn't
- 10:10Speaker 1: given that up coming about I'm gonna comed you like, now,
- 10:13Speaker 1: I know you get the molas fixed, you're on the
- 10:15Speaker 1: last o. G You're not to start that. But you're successful, man,
- 10:19Speaker 1: you rolling, and then you get this opportunity now your
- 10:21Speaker 1: TV or another network CBS, you know, yeah, not that
- 10:27Speaker 1: that that's a crossover network, know what I'm saying, CBS. Yeah,
- 10:32Speaker 1: so tell us about that whole process, man, the development
- 10:35Speaker 1: of the show. I mean, you know, well that's the
- 10:38Speaker 1: thing to always try to tell people that longevity. You know,
- 10:41Speaker 1: that reminds me of Mons King with Long Chef, and
- 10:44Speaker 1: it has this place is the idea of believing in
- 10:48Speaker 1: the long run, man, Like, you can't necessarily here if
- 10:51Speaker 1: you get hits now and you know, somebody have a
- 10:54Speaker 1: big hit younger in their career. You go, but who's
- 10:57Speaker 1: what's the best thing about having a long career. So
- 11:01Speaker 1: you know, you know, from the Steve Harvey Show that
- 11:03Speaker 1: was on the w B to having my show to
- 11:06Speaker 1: soul Man that was on TV Land. I had never
- 11:10Speaker 1: had you know, I did, as said, changing presents on Fox,
- 11:14Speaker 1: but I've never had anything on one of the big networks.
- 11:17Speaker 1: I've had deals, but never and so to you know,
- 11:21Speaker 1: to this point in my life, to have a show
- 11:23Speaker 1: on the number one network with a number one new
- 11:26Speaker 1: comedy and to have that that that the resources of
- 11:29Speaker 1: that of that network behind you, uh, you see a difference.
- 11:32Speaker 1: There is a there is a vitalization that happens. As says,
- 11:37Speaker 1: I'm validated one people like people understand who I am
- 11:41Speaker 1: now they get my brand. I didn't really have to
- 11:44Speaker 1: change to do it. I tell the story that's about
- 11:47Speaker 1: something that we all live, gentrification, how neighborhoods are being
- 11:51Speaker 1: you know, you know, uh moved into things that we've
- 11:55Speaker 1: grown grown up with and now we had to deal
- 11:58Speaker 1: with the world moving forward and now you you gotta
- 12:02Speaker 1: deal with the old foods where your where your hairdresser
- 12:05Speaker 1: used to be, like so right, you know these kind
- 12:11Speaker 1: of things is you know, and I thought it was
- 12:14Speaker 1: just a great place for the show and so today
- 12:17Speaker 1: and so we just ain't up making a great partnership.
- 12:19Speaker 1: And I'm glad that people they ain't showing the show
- 12:21Speaker 1: and we're having a good time with him. Man, it's
- 12:23Speaker 1: just so true. It's truly, it's so true. It was
- 12:26Speaker 1: so funny because I used to text something from fifth Ward.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Fifth Ward is a black community, and so it was
- 12:32Speaker 1: my mom still lives there. Winning then built out of house.
- 12:34Speaker 1: She want to move, said she will. Hey, they ain't
- 12:36Speaker 1: gonna right, So I just built a house around her house.
- 12:39Speaker 1: You know what I'm going like. You know, if I
- 12:41Speaker 1: just would tell that Dow that okay, okay, we're gonna
- 12:43Speaker 1: build a house around your house. Now, I gotta put
- 12:47Speaker 1: security along because everybody looking at the house, everybody looking
- 12:51Speaker 1: at her. But she refused to move. So they got
- 12:53Speaker 1: a big freeway they put into the neighborhood. And my
- 12:57Speaker 1: wife said, what's what's going on? I said, well, well,
- 13:00Speaker 1: my mom's value about to go up because all because
- 13:05Speaker 1: that's what happened, They all put a freeway in the
- 13:06Speaker 1: black neighborhood because they like black neighborhoods. They know that.
- 13:12Speaker 1: And that's why you're showing so time. That's why you
- 13:14Speaker 1: show it so timely man, That's why I love it. Yeah, no,
- 13:17Speaker 1: and it's and it's those kinds of things. And in
- 13:20Speaker 1: the process is that you know, we do you know,
- 13:23Speaker 1: like of course, you know, like guys like us, we've
- 13:26Speaker 1: had opportunities to live in a big world and operate
- 13:28Speaker 1: with a number of different people and everything doesn't break
- 13:30Speaker 1: down the black and white. So you do realize there's
- 13:33Speaker 1: groups of people out there that if you get to
- 13:36Speaker 1: know them as human beings, you actually enjoy them. And
- 13:40Speaker 1: I think the idea that we separate each other along
- 13:43Speaker 1: color lines, along uh, sexual preference, and you don't realize that,
- 13:48Speaker 1: you know, if I got to notice individual I would
- 13:51Speaker 1: enjoy them as a person. I would be like, oh,
- 13:53Speaker 1: I don't have to judge you because you look different
- 13:56Speaker 1: than me, or you come from somewhere else. And so
- 13:59Speaker 1: that's where we try to also really encouraging this show.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Even though you know, everybody gotta have tribal kind of pride,
- 14:06Speaker 1: you know, pride and being a black man and and
- 14:10Speaker 1: you know, loving black women and all these kind of
- 14:12Speaker 1: things that that makes us feel prideful, but you don't
- 14:16Speaker 1: judge the other. You don't judge the other because you
- 14:19Speaker 1: don't understand it, try to understand it and then recognize
- 14:23Speaker 1: that you can grow from those things. So that's what
- 14:25Speaker 1: you know this show is all about. And so, uh,
- 14:28Speaker 1: my character is pretty hardcore. At first, you know, I'm
- 14:31Speaker 1: the Archie Bunker, I'm the dude that's stuck in my
- 14:33Speaker 1: ways and don't won't you no change? And then I eventually,
- 14:37Speaker 1: you know, come to get to notice family and this
- 14:40Speaker 1: guy as a as an individual, and then you see
- 14:43Speaker 1: the growth of my character. That's the neighborhood on CBS
- 14:47Speaker 1: starring my good friends such entertainer his characters Calvin Butler
- 14:51Speaker 1: and he currently adds Curley Curleys every Monday night at
- 14:57Speaker 1: a pm, seven Central. Man, I appreciate your love so
- 15:02Speaker 1: many years man, watching each other, especially watching you, because
- 15:05Speaker 1: you know you're the face of America. We didn't even
- 15:07Speaker 1: talk about barber shop when you talk about a lot
- 15:09Speaker 1: of things. You are iconic, man, and you absolutely deserve
- 15:14Speaker 1: that star on the Hollywood Walker Fame. Okay, appreciate alright.
- 15:20Speaker 1: We talked soon how many of us have looked at

- 17:10Speaker 1: big TV star. Three years I think three years ago,
- 17:14Speaker 1: I'm watching TV late night TV. I think pack ten basketball,
- 17:19Speaker 1: and I see this young lady and I go while
- 17:22Speaker 1: I was with my wife the right my wife was,
- 17:25Speaker 1: I said, young leader right there? As talented, she said,
- 17:28Speaker 1: But I said something, she's she's gifted. She's Her ability
- 17:30Speaker 1: to articulate on the spot was something that fascinated me.
- 17:35Speaker 1: She's in her sixth season as an analyst, hosted reporter
- 17:38Speaker 1: for ESPN and served as a commentator for the college
- 17:42Speaker 1: football Playoff same in final and national championships games. In seen,
- 17:47Speaker 1: she became the first African American woman to co host
- 17:50Speaker 1: college game. They built by the Home Depot. That's the
- 17:53Speaker 1: largest UH college fans show on television. Previously, she served
- 17:59Speaker 1: as the first female the host of the SEC Network
- 18:01Speaker 1: traveling college football show The SEC Nation, alongside my Man,
- 18:05Speaker 1: Tim Tebow, Marcus Spills and Paul five Bomb. That show
- 18:10Speaker 1: right there, when she hosted that show, that was the
- 18:12Speaker 1: best sports show television. I told her that to her face.
- 18:15Speaker 1: You can see her on ESPN. Get up. I'd like
- 18:18Speaker 1: to say, change the culture of that TV show when
- 18:21Speaker 1: she when they started putting on there. Please, I'm gonna
- 18:24Speaker 1: just stop bragging on it. Please welcome the money making conversation.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Maria Taylor. Thank you so much for having me. I'm
- 18:31Speaker 1: literally over here blessing, like have I done all those things?
- 18:33Speaker 1: Are you sure you're talking about the right person? Yes,
- 18:35Speaker 1: I am. Um Maria, you just tell me the journey
- 18:39Speaker 1: to get here. You know I know that, Uh you
- 18:41Speaker 1: know your your local because the show broadcast in Atlanta
- 18:45Speaker 1: and you're from Afria. What did Georgia Volleyball basketball. How
- 18:49Speaker 1: did they hold of was? What? What was your degree?
- 18:52Speaker 1: Playing in? Well? I really started out when I got
- 18:55Speaker 1: to Georgia thinking that I was going to be some
- 18:57Speaker 1: kind of team doctor one day, and then I took
- 18:59Speaker 1: biology and life. That's not a good idea because that's
- 19:01Speaker 1: not my strength at all. So um, you know, a
- 19:05Speaker 1: couple of majors later, went through the business cycle and
- 19:07Speaker 1: to the accounting class. I got to broadcast journalism and
- 19:10Speaker 1: thought to myself, like, this is really what I want
- 19:12Speaker 1: to do. I love talking to people, I love interviewing people,
- 19:15Speaker 1: just asking a bunch of questions and that would be
- 19:17Speaker 1: the perfect sist for me. And luckily the University of
- 19:19Speaker 1: Georgia has a great journalism school and Grady Yeah, so
- 19:22Speaker 1: I was able to my senior year, We're putting on
- 19:24Speaker 1: whole newscast. So I have a resume tape by the
- 19:27Speaker 1: time I graduate. And then at the time, you know,
- 19:29Speaker 1: Damon Evans was the athletics director at Georgia, and you
- 19:32Speaker 1: knew my plans, my goals, my dreams were eventually working
- 19:34Speaker 1: for ESPN, and he helped me get my first job
- 19:37Speaker 1: out of the gates at Georgia, working for Georgia Dogs
- 19:39Speaker 1: Dot com so I was just like the reporter of
- 19:41Speaker 1: our website and I also did radio for volleyball and
- 19:44Speaker 1: women's basketball. So so if that's why I always tell
- 19:48Speaker 1: people to import of relationship. That's a relationship. They gave
- 19:51Speaker 1: you a really first option. But also when I see
- 19:54Speaker 1: you on television, what is what? What do you what
- 19:57Speaker 1: do you consider your number one skills saying? Is it preparation? Oh?
- 20:00Speaker 1: Is it the ability to think on the spot, Because
- 20:03Speaker 1: when you're walking up the two coaches, sometimes they're happy.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Sometimes I'm talking about you know, she she's on the
- 20:08Speaker 1: sideline with some of the biggest coaches in the game,
- 20:11Speaker 1: and so not all of them. They they're just doing
- 20:14Speaker 1: it because it's pretty much mandatory. They got to do
- 20:16Speaker 1: the interview. So getting that information out and being articulated
- 20:20Speaker 1: after a loss, after a victory, sometimes people are pulling
- 20:24Speaker 1: on you, knocking you out the way. They don't care
- 20:26Speaker 1: you Maria Jaylke and close to So how do you
- 20:29Speaker 1: manage all how do you manage all that? Um? I
- 20:32Speaker 1: think it's one of the keys that I actually learned
- 20:34Speaker 1: in volleyball. It's called reading and reacting. So um, you
- 20:37Speaker 1: almost have to read what's going on in the game.
- 20:39Speaker 1: You have to read the coaches space when he comes over.
- 20:42Speaker 1: You have to read the tone that he's taking with you.
- 20:44Speaker 1: You kind of have to know if you don't be
- 20:45Speaker 1: going to give you one question, or if he's gonna
- 20:47Speaker 1: give you too, and then you react to him if
- 20:50Speaker 1: he says something that's completely crazy that you didn't think
- 20:52Speaker 1: that he was gonna say by having a follow up question,
- 20:55Speaker 1: you know what I mean, if you ask, if you
- 20:58Speaker 1: have two questions package, then you gonna look a little
- 21:00Speaker 1: bit like you don't listen to him at all on camera,
- 21:03Speaker 1: if you don't respond to what he just said. So
- 21:05Speaker 1: you have to be able to react. I think those
- 21:07Speaker 1: are two of the biggest criteria to becoming a sideline
- 21:10Speaker 1: reporter or you know, just getting really good at your craft.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Is that ability to kind of go with the flow,
- 21:15Speaker 1: to listen, to change lanes quickly, um and adjust to
- 21:19Speaker 1: what's going on around you in the circumstances that you
- 21:21Speaker 1: can place that you know. The really thing about I'm
- 21:23Speaker 1: talking to Maria Taylor. She's a host, reporter and analyst
- 21:26Speaker 1: for ESPN covering college basketball, college football, and more. The
- 21:30Speaker 1: thing I like about your career so far is that
- 21:33Speaker 1: I I you know, I McGall discovered you on ESPN
- 21:36Speaker 1: doing college basketball. Now you over here college football, you know,
- 21:40Speaker 1: which means that you you know, you're diversifying your platform,
- 21:43Speaker 1: multiple streets of income and so yeah, you know that's
- 21:46Speaker 1: important because people can pigeonhold you and say, no, she's
- 21:49Speaker 1: over there, she's basketball alone it. How are you able
- 21:52Speaker 1: to make that transition? How? What what? What? What depth
- 21:55Speaker 1: moved it? Were you able to pull off to be
- 21:57Speaker 1: able to do that? Well? One of my biggest goals
- 22:00Speaker 1: when I started my career was to make sure that
- 22:02Speaker 1: that word pigeonhole never applied to me. So whether that
- 22:05Speaker 1: was I wanted to grow skill sets as a host um,
- 22:09Speaker 1: that was something that I would I would really go after.
- 22:11Speaker 1: I wanted to everyone to feel like if they needed
- 22:13Speaker 1: someone to be an analyst for basketball and volleyball, I
- 22:16Speaker 1: could do that, or if you need a reporter, I
- 22:18Speaker 1: could do that. And of course, in order to do
- 22:20Speaker 1: all those things, you have to be able to work
- 22:22Speaker 1: in multiple sports. Otherwise you'll only work for say, four
- 22:25Speaker 1: months out of the year, and I didn't want that.
- 22:27Speaker 1: I wanted a full time and everyone wants that. Somebody
- 22:32Speaker 1: was great coming out of school because Comcast Sports South,
- 22:35Speaker 1: you know Atlanta, they used to be around CSS, they
- 22:37Speaker 1: were the high school sports. I was able to do
- 22:40Speaker 1: some football games for them, and it kind of translated
- 22:42Speaker 1: into doing the SEC game of the week for CSS
- 22:45Speaker 1: as well, and so that's how I got into the
- 22:47Speaker 1: football lane. But it all started with being just good
- 22:50Speaker 1: at basketball and volleyball for them first. That's really awesome.
- 22:53Speaker 1: And so now you're sitting and I see a regular
- 22:56Speaker 1: on Get Up, which is even even another stratosphere, and
- 23:01Speaker 1: you you get the report, you get to have your opinion,
- 23:04Speaker 1: you get to how has that that that transition to
- 23:07Speaker 1: that platform changed your perspective. Yeah, I think it's changed
- 23:13Speaker 1: the game in a lot of ways for me because
- 23:15Speaker 1: you kind of get seen in the same lane after
- 23:17Speaker 1: a while. So you know, being the reporter or on
- 23:21Speaker 1: college game that you have a certain role. Being on
- 23:24Speaker 1: the sidelines, you know, you have a very particular role
- 23:26Speaker 1: and it's reporting and a lot of your hits are
- 23:28Speaker 1: only for a thirty second. Meanwhile, when you do get up,
- 23:31Speaker 1: you know, you might do the highlight read with Jalen
- 23:33Speaker 1: and then you have to have a conversation about the
- 23:35Speaker 1: Lakers and then you need to go over and help
- 23:37Speaker 1: them with Dan or Laski doing a touch screen and
- 23:39Speaker 1: now all of a sudden, you know you're talking about
- 23:41Speaker 1: what the Jets need next. And so I think it's
- 23:43Speaker 1: not only does it helping me. I mean every day
- 23:45Speaker 1: I seriously learned something to do and feel like I'm
- 23:47Speaker 1: getting better at my craft, but it also position positions
- 23:50Speaker 1: you from a broader scheme, whether that's the higher ups
- 23:53Speaker 1: realizing oh it's like a real host to like she
- 23:56Speaker 1: could sit in that chair um and lead a conversation
- 23:59Speaker 1: and be the conduct through on a show. I think
- 24:01Speaker 1: for my career it's been an awesome opportunity to just
- 24:04Speaker 1: kind of flex some different muscles. I'm getting really just
- 24:06Speaker 1: like you get really strong with your close or whatever.
- 24:08Speaker 1: But if you're not working on your cats, your legs
- 24:09Speaker 1: don't look crazy. And so I have been working a
- 24:11Speaker 1: really hard just one internet. You don't want the crazy legs. Yeah,
- 24:15Speaker 1: you know you don't want to be looking You're looking
- 24:17Speaker 1: at you like she, I mean she looks strong on
- 24:18Speaker 1: top of she's the legs they're like little too thick.
- 24:20Speaker 1: You know, I'm getting balanced now as a broadcaster. Well,
- 24:24Speaker 1: you know that's why I love about you, know how
- 24:26Speaker 1: you you know, I'm just a fan of watching you
- 24:30Speaker 1: be you because you know the college basketball to college
- 24:34Speaker 1: football and get up allows you to talk about everything
- 24:38Speaker 1: not baseball is about the camp, you know, and then
- 24:41Speaker 1: professional football and so you because you're your your your
- 24:45Speaker 1: voice allows you to to but you. But I hope
- 24:49Speaker 1: you understand what I'm saying is that you are really cultivating.
- 24:53Speaker 1: At three sixty, I think that you've dreamed about in
- 24:55Speaker 1: your career. Well it's funny because when I set out,
- 24:58Speaker 1: you know, I used to always say, you just I
- 25:00Speaker 1: want to be a reporter on ESPN. And then there
- 25:02Speaker 1: was a point I think it was twelve, and I
- 25:04Speaker 1: got the job and said, okay, it's time to adjust
- 25:05Speaker 1: these goals, like what do you really want to do?
- 25:07Speaker 1: Like what is the highest dream that you could possibly have?
- 25:10Speaker 1: And I remember rob and Roberts says, and I've read
- 25:12Speaker 1: her books like nine times. So there's a kid listening
- 25:15Speaker 1: read from the heart eight Rules to live By. She
- 25:17Speaker 1: has two of them. The Seven Rules to Live By
- 25:19Speaker 1: was before she got cancers. Then she wrote eight Rules
- 25:21Speaker 1: to Live By. But she always said dream big, but
- 25:23Speaker 1: focus really small. But my big dream is being on
- 25:26Speaker 1: Good Morning America. Then like what are the skill sets
- 25:28Speaker 1: that I need to get there? And who needs to
- 25:30Speaker 1: believe in me? And who do I need to impress?
- 25:32Speaker 1: And you know what, do I need to have entertainment
- 25:34Speaker 1: in my background? Do I need to have a little
- 25:36Speaker 1: bit of news? So all of that stuff is what
- 25:38Speaker 1: I'm kind of trying to line up if my ultimate
- 25:40Speaker 1: goal is maybe doing a big morning show or something
- 25:42Speaker 1: like that, which is what my goal kind of changed
- 25:45Speaker 1: to once I got to ESPN again. Ladies and gentlemen,
- 25:48Speaker 1: you can catch her, she tells you. Those schedules incredible.
- 25:50Speaker 1: You can catch her when she's not on the road.
- 25:52Speaker 1: She's gonna be on Get Up As every morning on ESPN.
- 25:56Speaker 1: The new show UM Million Dollar Mile a prem Yors
- 26:00Speaker 1: March twenty seven. That's a Wednesday on CBS. It's ten episodes,
- 26:04Speaker 1: high stakes, high competition. And remember this, ladies and gentlemen,
- 26:08Speaker 1: Maria do not change. Okay, stop telling the girl and
- 26:17Speaker 1: just wonder you. I'm never going past when you walk off.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you. I appreciate you, and thank you
- 26:25Speaker 1: for calling me from you from the arena. Thank you,
- 26:28Speaker 1: and I appreciate your time and everything that you've done
- 26:30Speaker 1: for me and the way that you're just speaking life
- 26:32Speaker 1: in me. It means a lot. I know that you're
- 26:34Speaker 1: great at what you do. Your eye is great, you
- 26:36Speaker 1: strategized for people, and you've been in the industry for

- 28:18Speaker 1: businesses with information to succeed. Now, my guest who's on
- 28:37Speaker 1: the phone correct is a cornerback in the National Football League.
- 28:44Speaker 1: He played collegue football for the Townsend Tigers that's in Maryland,
- 28:49Speaker 1: and was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks, one of my
- 28:51Speaker 1: favorite teams, in the fifth round of NFL Draft. He
- 28:55Speaker 1: now plays for the Tennessee Titans. Tennessee Titan used to
- 28:57Speaker 1: be in Houston, used to be used arts. So you know,
- 29:01Speaker 1: I got like I got kind of like a feeling
- 29:03Speaker 1: for tennis type, kind of like I'm balanced between I
- 29:07Speaker 1: love hate them. They kind of owe Ailers, but data Texans.
- 29:11Speaker 1: So so I got a love hate relationship with him already.
- 29:16Speaker 1: And uh he's on the show to talk about staying
- 29:18Speaker 1: focused and overcoming the oars and professional football is program.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Simple Greatness is a youth outreach company that focuses on
- 29:26Speaker 1: the uplifting of the youth in our communities. Please welcome
- 29:29Speaker 1: to money Making Conversation, Ty Smith. Hey, how are you doing? Wait?
- 29:35Speaker 1: Are what city are you calling me from? Right now?
- 29:38Speaker 1: I'm in Santa Cruz, California. I'm I'm out your training
- 29:43Speaker 1: to your training? What's that? Uh? Getting ready for? What's
- 29:46Speaker 1: What's okay? I was. I had to get them. I
- 29:51Speaker 1: had to get those three letters right because I messed
- 29:53Speaker 1: him up. The other day when I was interviewing a
- 29:55Speaker 1: another young man from the National Football League, I said, PTO,
- 29:58Speaker 1: so you started laughing at he's I can use those days,
- 30:05Speaker 1: but uh so does it ever stop? Does the training
- 30:07Speaker 1: ever stop? His year round? Huh? Here's yeah, it's really
- 30:10Speaker 1: it's really year around that You just gotta you gotta
- 30:13Speaker 1: know when let rest your body, how to build it
- 30:16Speaker 1: back up to to get it ready for the season
- 30:18Speaker 1: and all that. So it's it's definitely a year around.
- 30:21Speaker 1: So the O T A S that really is I
- 30:23Speaker 1: thought the OT is you supposed to go to O
- 30:25Speaker 1: T S to get did shape and training, But you're
- 30:28Speaker 1: saying that you have to train for the O T
- 30:30Speaker 1: S and then O T S to prepare you for
- 30:32Speaker 1: preseason and preceded to prepare you for the football season. Yeah,
- 30:37Speaker 1: exactly when do you rest, sir? When do you rest?
- 30:44Speaker 1: You might you might rest uh of a year, a
- 30:47Speaker 1: total of year. You might rest for like a month.
- 30:51Speaker 1: You might rest for a total of a month. Because
- 30:53Speaker 1: right after the season, most guys take like, you know,
- 30:56Speaker 1: a couple of weeks off and to completely nothing that
- 30:58Speaker 1: they started back doing little foundation stuff that building foundation
- 31:02Speaker 1: back up, right, So, so what's the what's the what's
- 31:05Speaker 1: the off season like for you? We're going to talk
- 31:07Speaker 1: about the many programs you're involved, but I would like
- 31:10Speaker 1: the people who know about you as an individual, and
- 31:12Speaker 1: also the fact that you know you weren't you were
- 31:15Speaker 1: not a high first round draft pick, you were not
- 31:18Speaker 1: from one of those major UH power five schools, and
- 31:22Speaker 1: you've been successful in life. Towns and tigers and towns
- 31:26Speaker 1: in Maryland. How does a young man from that school
- 31:29Speaker 1: make it in the National Football League? Um? Really just
- 31:34Speaker 1: not not giving up, not uh not quitting, Um, just
- 31:39Speaker 1: just pushing and understanding and believing that, you know, greater
- 31:42Speaker 1: things are coming, especially to those who worked and put
- 31:46Speaker 1: in the work, and for me especially you know, praying
- 31:49Speaker 1: and stand in the word and just just ultimately just
- 31:52Speaker 1: believing that the greatest teams are coming. Now, you were
- 31:56Speaker 1: drafted in the fifth round. So that's that's pretty that's
- 31:58Speaker 1: a pretty nice check round. It's filth frown And then
- 32:02Speaker 1: you know you went for a poler school. Today. Invite
- 32:04Speaker 1: you to the combine. Yeah, I got invited to combine.
- 32:07Speaker 1: That was key right there, getting inviteds to combine because
- 32:10Speaker 1: you got to show off your speed, your agility and
- 32:12Speaker 1: all that stuff that helped you. Right yeah, yeah, I
- 32:15Speaker 1: believe it helped. And then so so to get there
- 32:19Speaker 1: and now you now you with Seattle and now you
- 32:23Speaker 1: went to Titans. So when you with Seattle, how was
- 32:26Speaker 1: that first experience when you came into the camp? You
- 32:29Speaker 1: your fearth frowned draft pick you way up and you know,
- 32:32Speaker 1: you went from the East to the very west. It's
- 32:36Speaker 1: a total, total culture change. You have to mine it's
- 32:39Speaker 1: a culture change. So how did you deal with that?
- 32:42Speaker 1: You know, because your friends, you know, you need support,
- 32:44Speaker 1: You need support your new teammates and you how did
- 32:47Speaker 1: that work for you? Um? They endn know working out
- 32:51Speaker 1: pretty well because of the team I went to. We
- 32:53Speaker 1: had a lot of better leadership, especially that we've been
- 32:57Speaker 1: a GB I had veteran leaders like Earl Thomas, Richard Sherman,
- 33:02Speaker 1: Cam Chanfer and um. Yeah, so also a clearer development
- 33:09Speaker 1: guy Mo Kelly out in Seattle. He is a big
- 33:12Speaker 1: help and helping like the rookies and the other guys
- 33:16Speaker 1: get adjusted to the to the new you know, the
- 33:19Speaker 1: new community and just the new Uh. The business of
- 33:22Speaker 1: the NFL, not just you know, college and NFL is
- 33:26Speaker 1: different because you know it's a business when he comes
- 33:29Speaker 1: to the NFL. We's the great thing about you going
- 33:33Speaker 1: to Seattle. You got to see and be around some
- 33:36Speaker 1: real personalities, people who speak their mind. You know Bennett
- 33:40Speaker 1: deefensive Lineman. You know he real personality, you said, Richard Simmons,
- 33:44Speaker 1: Stanford Grad real personality. Earl Thomas eb had don't forget
- 33:50Speaker 1: the man, the quarterback, real Russell Russell Wilson, a lot
- 33:54Speaker 1: of personality. Why receiver Dougall All this guy did that?
- 34:01Speaker 1: Did that help you to understand that you could have
- 34:03Speaker 1: a because you came into into the National Football League
- 34:07Speaker 1: right at the right at the Colin Kapernack moment, and
- 34:10Speaker 1: it kind of changed the whole perception of the quote
- 34:13Speaker 1: unquote black athlete in the National Football League. And I
- 34:16Speaker 1: am I saying that right or my my misstating something.
- 34:20Speaker 1: Can you explain that a little more, meaning that you know,
- 34:23Speaker 1: we became outspoken. You know, they were the protests, And
- 34:26Speaker 1: I'm not trying to put you on the spot. I'm
- 34:28Speaker 1: just saying I'm just in my perception of that. You know,
- 34:31Speaker 1: before before that period, just play football, play nobody. No,
- 34:36Speaker 1: you went out there, got that check, you got hurt,
- 34:38Speaker 1: you complained, you know you you would complain. But this
- 34:41Speaker 1: time politics, I guess socialism or social so so the
- 34:45Speaker 1: social climate that was happening, industries came inside the stadium.
- 34:49Speaker 1: Did that have an effect on you? And not saying, uh,
- 34:52Speaker 1: not trying to put your spot, just saying that it
- 34:54Speaker 1: did create a culture change in the in the league.
- 34:57Speaker 1: Did it Uh, yeah, I feel like it is. It's
- 35:01Speaker 1: just um, I feel like that help athletes speak out
- 35:05Speaker 1: on political issues and social issues and knowing that we
- 35:10Speaker 1: can use our platform to bring awareness and change to
- 35:14Speaker 1: what we believe in and what we see out there.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Because you gotta think about a lot of athletes come
- 35:19Speaker 1: from those communities that they are being affected in the
- 35:23Speaker 1: negative way and they just want to bring life to
- 35:26Speaker 1: They just want to bring life to the situation. I like,
- 35:30Speaker 1: can you explain that a little bit more so? Tide's
- 35:33Speaker 1: not gonna just throw out a response on something. What
- 35:35Speaker 1: you just say, brother, think I got a career. You
- 35:37Speaker 1: ain't messing me up with this interview. What you say
- 35:40Speaker 1: something wrong? The reason the reason I brought that up
- 35:42Speaker 1: because you're involved with the Habitats for Humanity and then
- 35:45Speaker 1: your other program, and these are really socially conscious programs,
- 35:49Speaker 1: Like well, first of all, habits Habitat for your manity,
- 35:53Speaker 1: you have to work. That's not something you used to
- 35:56Speaker 1: go around just just just grin and take pictures. They're
- 35:58Speaker 1: they're actually building home. It's correct. Yeah, That's why I'm
- 36:05Speaker 1: I love how to touch me many because it's more
- 36:07Speaker 1: like you really put you getting your hands dirty, like
- 36:09Speaker 1: you were there building a foundation, putting your hands on
- 36:12Speaker 1: the house, and like you're you're there with the family
- 36:15Speaker 1: who's going to live in the house. So you know
- 36:16Speaker 1: what I'm saying, you're doing the handles them building the house, uh,
- 36:20Speaker 1: cutting wood, putting the doors up now, and nobody stuff
- 36:24Speaker 1: on the roof. That's why I really like them because,
- 36:27Speaker 1: like like I said, it's more of a hands on think.
- 36:29Speaker 1: It's not just she's just throwing money to a to
- 36:32Speaker 1: a thing, like you're actually helping volunteer, you know that.
- 36:35Speaker 1: I feel like that goes along way. Now, A lot
- 36:37Speaker 1: of athletes do foundations. What is your foundation structures? You friend,
- 36:44Speaker 1: mother or father or sister, brother are a relative? Who
- 36:49Speaker 1: who runs your foundation? Uh? Me? Really me and uh family,
- 36:56Speaker 1: family and friends? But I say namely me, but it
- 37:00Speaker 1: just like I I can't, I can't describe it no
- 37:03Speaker 1: better than me and how I go about life and
- 37:05Speaker 1: how I go to things. Well, you're kind of doing
- 37:08Speaker 1: it anyway when you're talking about the habitats for humanity,
- 37:12Speaker 1: there are similarities, correct, Yeah. I try to uh connect
- 37:18Speaker 1: with companies that I believe has the same value system
- 37:21Speaker 1: as myself and and and that value the system is
- 37:26Speaker 1: what Uh that value system, I would say, is a
- 37:32Speaker 1: genuine care for people. It's not about it's about it's
- 37:38Speaker 1: not about money. I know. You know in this world
- 37:41Speaker 1: a lot of people get lost in the money aspect,
- 37:43Speaker 1: thinking that money and power, you know, saying it will
- 37:47Speaker 1: lead you long way if I believe or like some
- 37:50Speaker 1: value things like you no compassion forgiveness. Uh, the thing
- 37:55Speaker 1: that intangible you know that that we can't we can't
- 37:58Speaker 1: really measure the degree that some people you know, stuff
- 38:02Speaker 1: like that. You know when when I look at the well,
- 38:05Speaker 1: I'm on the phone with Ty Smith, he's uh pointerback
- 38:08Speaker 1: for the Tennessee Titans. Was drafted in the fifth round
- 38:12Speaker 1: by the cels Seahawks. Like he just stated, you know,
- 38:15Speaker 1: there was no guarantees. He got cut by Seattle. Then
- 38:17Speaker 1: he was on the practice squad for the Redskins. Then
- 38:20Speaker 1: he got picked up by the Tennessee Titan. When you're
- 38:22Speaker 1: going through those trials and tribulations, what was your You're
- 38:25Speaker 1: an athlete, you know you have a short window. You
- 38:27Speaker 1: compete against other athletes and like I said, you know
- 38:30Speaker 1: at towns and you're the fastest person on the team
- 38:32Speaker 1: or maybe the stronger person on the team. Then you
- 38:34Speaker 1: come to the NFL and you're like you First you
- 38:36Speaker 1: go to the combine, you go wow. Then you go
- 38:38Speaker 1: to the NFL, you go wow wow. So what keeps
- 38:42Speaker 1: you mentally motivated that you can win in that environment? Um,
- 38:49Speaker 1: I wouldn't say how motivated because that's I feel like
- 38:52Speaker 1: that's motivation is just the motion that comes and goes.
- 38:55Speaker 1: I'm just I'm dedicated. I'm dedicated to be that I
- 39:01Speaker 1: know I can be and I can said I believe that, uh,
- 39:04Speaker 1: I can be one of the best to ever play
- 39:06Speaker 1: this game. And that's where that's why I put in
- 39:09Speaker 1: day in and day out. Um. I cherished the small
- 39:14Speaker 1: things like the training, the moments and training, and I
- 39:17Speaker 1: feel like that those those small things add up to
- 39:20Speaker 1: bigger things down the line. Like when when things do
- 39:23Speaker 1: it acually turn my way and people see the player
- 39:27Speaker 1: that I am being, that I can be and will be,
- 39:30Speaker 1: it will be accumulation of all the things that I've
- 39:33Speaker 1: worked worked for for in term of years back. It
- 39:35Speaker 1: won't just be from the stuff I did you know
- 39:39Speaker 1: up um right now, it would be from the things
- 39:41Speaker 1: I did years ago that people need to see. That's important. So, um,
- 39:46Speaker 1: You're the spokesperson or habitats for humanity. Uh, your fantastic
- 39:51Speaker 1: organizations Simple greatness like it's as simple as you great.
- 39:54Speaker 1: This is what you can achieve no matter what standards are.
- 39:57Speaker 1: More roadblocks are U thoughts that people might have about
- 40:01Speaker 1: what you can and can I do? Um, do you
- 40:03Speaker 1: have any software, I mean some social media handles you
- 40:06Speaker 1: want to throw up right quick time so we can
- 40:08Speaker 1: get you building your brand? Yeah? My my Instagram is

- 42:12Speaker 1: I gotta have important people coming with us, like a
- 42:14Speaker 1: sound important. My next guest are a power couple for
- 42:19Speaker 1: my They live in my favorite city or New York City.
- 42:21Speaker 1: I love New York City. I was like there last week,
- 42:23Speaker 1: So next time I go up there, I gotta contact
- 42:25Speaker 1: them so we can. I'm sure they've got some places
- 42:27Speaker 1: where I can go eat, because everybody knows I am
- 42:30Speaker 1: a king foodie. Okay. He's the first African American owner
- 42:34Speaker 1: of a pro sports team in New York City, New
- 42:37Speaker 1: York history, and first African American owner or a pro
- 42:40Speaker 1: football team. He is the CEO and she serves as
- 42:43Speaker 1: Chief Revenue Officer of the New York Streets. Their firm,
- 42:47Speaker 1: Legacy Growth Partners, owns the team. LGB is a private
- 42:51Speaker 1: investment firm with investments and entertainment, manufacturing, and real estate.
- 42:55Speaker 1: Please welcome to Money Making Conversations. Founder and chairman see
- 43:00Speaker 1: old at the firm, Corey and Tamearra Galloway. Hello, Oh
- 43:07Speaker 1: you know I was there. They just knew I was
- 43:11Speaker 1: gonna mess up your name, they can say, you know,
- 43:15Speaker 1: but everything. First, First of all they tell me is
- 43:16Speaker 1: your Birthdayay, okay, alright, birthday. You're doing my show on
- 43:21Speaker 1: the birthday. So with Corey, what you're gonna do? Brother,
- 43:23Speaker 1: Come on now, Wenna, we're gonna we're gonna make this
- 43:25Speaker 1: personal air. Oh we're gonna do that. Oh my god,
- 43:31Speaker 1: but I have not done. Brother. We celebrate no. We
- 43:34Speaker 1: celebrate no on your show. That's unique. That's unique. That's
- 43:40Speaker 1: the first. That's what you you used to doing first,
- 43:42Speaker 1: my friend, you used to doing first. And I read
- 43:45Speaker 1: your bio on both of you and it's very rather unique.
- 43:48Speaker 1: And when I when I started talking about trend setters, groundbreakers, visionaries,
- 43:54Speaker 1: I'm sure those names I have been used to describe
- 43:58Speaker 1: both of you as a couple as well as individuals.
- 44:01Speaker 1: So how do you get into football business? So we
- 44:04Speaker 1: um I started by he's a consult with pro athletes,
- 44:09Speaker 1: mainly NFL NBA players for about ten years. And Marcus
- 44:15Speaker 1: Colston who played for the Saints, and I uh, he
- 44:19Speaker 1: launched the team in Harburg called the Hansburg and I
- 44:23Speaker 1: worked with him on that for four years. And that's
- 44:26Speaker 1: when I was introduced to the arena sports industry and
- 44:31Speaker 1: got to know all the owners and different leagues from
- 44:34Speaker 1: a FL to i f L to n a L.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Such a fragmented business, but got the meet and understand
- 44:42Speaker 1: a lot of the players in the industry. And when
- 44:45Speaker 1: I I'm a native New Yorker. So we end up
- 44:51Speaker 1: getting out of that team and market's end up investing
- 44:55Speaker 1: in the Philadelphia Soul, which is an arena football team,
- 44:57Speaker 1: and got to know the owners there. And and as
- 45:00Speaker 1: we're getting to know the owners and they say, hey,
- 45:01Speaker 1: you know, New York doesn't have a market have a team,
- 45:04Speaker 1: but it has a big market. And that began the journey.
- 45:07Speaker 1: And I was three years ago just to um find
- 45:12Speaker 1: a location so we can actually launch a team. And
- 45:15Speaker 1: that was a three year journey. So how we how
- 45:17Speaker 1: I got into the arena space was through my consulting
- 45:21Speaker 1: with pro athletes with Marcus Colston and working on the
- 45:24Speaker 1: Harrisburg's campaigne let Us all the way to the seven
- 45:28Speaker 1: years later launching the New York Streets. Explain to my
- 45:32Speaker 1: listeners what exactly is arena football. So arena football is
- 45:39Speaker 1: played inside hence the word arena. It's basically playing on
- 45:45Speaker 1: the same city yards field similar to a hockey rink.
- 45:50Speaker 1: And basically it's eight on eight. About ten percent of
- 45:55Speaker 1: arena football players, Arena football leagu players go onto the NFL.
- 46:01Speaker 1: So it is a place where, um, the NFL pays
- 46:04Speaker 1: attention to if you for anyone that's really in the
- 46:08Speaker 1: sports and really into the NFL from a geek, this
- 46:11Speaker 1: point of view in the collective bargaining agreement with the
- 46:14Speaker 1: NFL Players Association and the NFL, Arena football is actually
- 46:18Speaker 1: spelled out in that collective bargaining agreement because it's such
- 46:21Speaker 1: a source of talent for the NFL. Well, one of
- 46:26Speaker 1: one of the famous alumnus from there is Kurt Warner
- 46:30Speaker 1: is now Hall of Fame for the back Kurt Warner,
- 46:34Speaker 1: and uh, he came for arena football. And it's all
- 46:36Speaker 1: about I'm a fan of arena football. I watch it
- 46:39Speaker 1: high scoring. Um, you you as a fan, you just
- 46:43Speaker 1: like hockey because you know you can run right up
- 46:45Speaker 1: into those pads and so so that you you you
- 46:49Speaker 1: you mastermind. You filed in the chairman and then got
- 46:52Speaker 1: the chief revenue. This is all about money now. It's
- 46:56Speaker 1: all about why through the females, the women, then our lives.
- 47:00Speaker 1: The ladies control the first tree. That's what he said.
- 47:04Speaker 1: They say it when it comes to the money. The
- 47:06Speaker 1: purse trings is controlled by the ladies. So Chief Revenue Officer,
- 47:12Speaker 1: please come to the front of the room. Thank you.
- 47:16Speaker 1: He's pitching this idea to you about he's been working
- 47:20Speaker 1: on it. Professional football player down New Orleans. Why receiver
- 47:26Speaker 1: four years? Why does this seem like a good idea
- 47:29Speaker 1: to the chief revenue officer the New York streets. Well,
- 47:34Speaker 1: you know, I gotta tell you, to be honest, I
- 47:36Speaker 1: wasn't really sure to begin with. How you know that
- 47:43Speaker 1: was my first reaction, But I have to say that
- 47:44Speaker 1: I love it. I'm with him all the way. We have.
- 47:47Speaker 1: All we do is strategize and figure out what it
- 47:49Speaker 1: is that we're going to be able to accomplish together.
- 47:52Speaker 1: And you know, this is my background. Sponsorship has been
- 47:55Speaker 1: my life for the last twenty years. So being able
- 47:59Speaker 1: to leverage the football market and being involved on this
- 48:02Speaker 1: level with my husband has been a dream. Contrue. Now,
- 48:04Speaker 1: this is really interesting because when I go through resumes,
- 48:06Speaker 1: I try to pull out a lot of bios and
- 48:08Speaker 1: trying to pull out little nuggets and like one of
- 48:10Speaker 1: the gems was a mother of four being able to
- 48:15Speaker 1: balance being a mother of four. Let's talk about that,
- 48:19Speaker 1: because I always tell people or publicly on my show
- 48:22Speaker 1: that despite all my success, I did not understand how
- 48:26Speaker 1: to balance my life. I would just all in on work.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Were you like that, Corey of Were you able to
- 48:32Speaker 1: balance your life? Yeah? I think, Um, what I've been
- 48:36Speaker 1: able to do. The reason I set out to work
- 48:39Speaker 1: on my own is to actually have ultimate balance. So
- 48:43Speaker 1: you know the thing about an entrepreneurs you can schedule
- 48:45Speaker 1: your meetings according to your schedule, and unless it's a
- 48:50Speaker 1: revenue meeting, right which I'll move having and earth to
- 48:52Speaker 1: take those meetings with all the other meetings working around
- 48:55Speaker 1: our kids schedule definitely comes from Now I'm gonna come
- 48:58Speaker 1: back to the mother of four. Now, you know I
- 49:00Speaker 1: was talking to then I just lead over the court.
- 49:02Speaker 1: I think everybody went, are you talking to Timer the mother?
- 49:05Speaker 1: Now he's talking to Corey the mother. He's just he's
- 49:08Speaker 1: just the day. So talk about that. You know, the
- 49:12Speaker 1: whole responsibility of being a mom, and sometimes that can
- 49:15Speaker 1: be guilt when you're when you're working mom when it
- 49:18Speaker 1: comes to parenting and and being being responsible and wanting
- 49:22Speaker 1: your child to have all the time and realize that
- 49:25Speaker 1: they you were there for them, how they How are
- 49:27Speaker 1: you able to balance it being a mother for you know,
- 49:30Speaker 1: balance is such a hard word. You know, I worked
- 49:32Speaker 1: really really hard to make sure that we're balancing. But
- 49:34Speaker 1: at the end of the day, I'm something something's not
- 49:37Speaker 1: a you know that we're never really fully satisfied. But
- 49:42Speaker 1: at the end of the day, our values are very
- 49:43Speaker 1: much aligned Corey and I with you know, God, first,
- 49:46Speaker 1: family and just making sure that you know, everything else
- 49:49Speaker 1: will fall into place once we have those those those
- 49:53Speaker 1: those are you know, our stars. But at the end
- 49:55Speaker 1: of the day, you know, my kids literally right now
- 49:58Speaker 1: we're trying to get two oldest into college. So there's
- 50:01Speaker 1: a lot of time that's being spent on you know,
- 50:03Speaker 1: college applications and everybody being anxious and where are they going?
- 50:09Speaker 1: And I am available, like the no matter what, you know,
- 50:11Speaker 1: I'm definitely available no matter what we're doing. Like obviously,
- 50:14Speaker 1: revenue is definitely our number one priority. Like just like
- 50:17Speaker 1: Corey said, so when we're when we have different meetings,
- 50:19Speaker 1: but we have we're blessed to be able to kind
- 50:21Speaker 1: of schedule around it to make sure that there is
- 50:24Speaker 1: a balance. Now I have to stay when you're doing
- 50:28Speaker 1: when you're doing a venture like this, let me just
- 50:31Speaker 1: tell people about her background. You know, she's work for
- 50:36Speaker 1: Time Incorporated and was very instrumental in the growth of
- 50:39Speaker 1: iconic brands as Real Simple and people say People Magazine. Correct, Yes, okay,
- 50:46Speaker 1: so these aren't like you know, these are brands. Did
- 50:50Speaker 1: you walk into a store? You see them on the
- 50:52Speaker 1: share recognizable. So the idea of taking the New York
- 50:56Speaker 1: Streets and being able to brand it and market it,
- 50:59Speaker 1: what is the land when you have this tremendous background,
- 51:02Speaker 1: which also means you probably have tremendous connections and tremendous relationships,
- 51:06Speaker 1: how do you do you go into You know, you're
- 51:09Speaker 1: proclaimed as the chief revenue officer in the bio, but
- 51:12Speaker 1: I'm sure you're involved in the marketing and the branding
- 51:15Speaker 1: and the publicity of the New York Streets. Correct. Correct, Yes,
- 51:20Speaker 1: I've got my hand a little bit of everything. Absolutely.
- 51:23Speaker 1: I just didn't let them just throw that one title
- 51:25Speaker 1: on you. I know you got five five? Um over there,
- 51:27Speaker 1: Come on, Corey, Come on that, Corey, you got to
- 51:30Speaker 1: You got two in the resume here the founder and chairman,
- 51:33Speaker 1: she just has one. You got three? You got founder
- 51:38Speaker 1: chairman and see, oh you got a budget of going
- 51:44Speaker 1: she just got one type revenue. So so I'm going
- 51:48Speaker 1: through the bio. I'm just going, okay, but she she's

- 53:07Speaker 1: reputation I should say when my expectations are and what
- 53:12Speaker 1: we're delivering. And I'm really I'm really impressed that you
- 53:15Speaker 1: that you noted that well. I had to because of
- 53:18Speaker 1: the fact that, um my whole I'm I like to blame.
- 53:23Speaker 1: I'm a brand expert, and I'm really into marketing and
- 53:26Speaker 1: when I when I love to bring power couples on
- 53:29Speaker 1: the show because that's a that's a that's a different combination,
- 53:32Speaker 1: you know, because of the fact that you have to
- 53:34Speaker 1: be able to work and then you be able to
- 53:36Speaker 1: work together that would be able to turn it off.
- 53:38Speaker 1: We able to say, look, we're good, we're good. Now
- 53:41Speaker 1: we're gonna go home and be with the family. That's
- 53:43Speaker 1: an interesting dynamics and a lot of people don't understand.
- 53:45Speaker 1: And so like when when I'm going through your resume
