- 0:23Speaker 1: get this show started.
- 0:25Speaker 2: My guest is the CEO and co founder of Path.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Path provides tests, preparation tools for unlimited practice questions, full
- 0:33Speaker 1: length exams, and personalized study plans for professional certification and IT, cybersecurity,
- 0:40Speaker 1: and healthcare and many more. And it also supports students
- 0:43Speaker 1: preparing for college mission exams such as SAT ACT, ged
- 0:49Speaker 1: L SAT and gm AT and many more. We got
- 0:53Speaker 1: a lot to talk about. Please welcome to Money Making
- 0:55Speaker 1: Conversation Masterclass. Christopher Gray. How you doing Christopher?
- 1:00Speaker 3: And good Man? Thanks for having me.
- 1:01Speaker 1: First of all, Man, I've done a lot of interviews
- 1:05Speaker 1: with people. They talk about S A T, they talk
- 1:07Speaker 1: about a C T. Man, you stepped over to the
- 1:10Speaker 1: mountaintop with your your program. When I hear certification and
- 1:14Speaker 1: I T certification healthcare certification in the UH in cybersecurity
- 1:20Speaker 1: plus G ed L S A T.
- 1:23Speaker 2: G M A T man. That's a lot going on.
- 1:26Speaker 1: How did you in a in a in a short
- 1:29Speaker 1: short conversation, tell us how did you envision this particular app.
- 1:34Speaker 4: Right, So, the way the way I kind of see
- 1:37Speaker 4: path is that what we're trying to do is historically
- 1:42Speaker 4: they think like the A C T S, A T G,
- 1:44Speaker 4: MATT LSAD come to you and collects all these exams
- 1:48Speaker 4: like really are make or break kind of make or
- 1:50Speaker 4: break students and the ability to get into the college
- 1:52Speaker 4: they want to, but also scholarships. Right, you have a
- 1:55Speaker 4: new administration actually which is pushing for the reinstatement of
- 1:58Speaker 4: these different of these exams and reliance on these exams,
- 2:02Speaker 4: you know, for the excuse of a merit based rhetography.
- 2:05Speaker 3: But the problem is all with differentiates the.
- 2:10Speaker 4: Wealthy students and middle and lower midlitized students from being
- 2:14Speaker 4: a due wellness test of preparation.
- 2:15Speaker 3: You can go to capital in and.
- 2:16Speaker 4: Pay two three thousand dollars just to prepare for one
- 2:20Speaker 4: of these tests. Most low income people of color cannot
- 2:22Speaker 4: afford that, so they tend to not do well. Right,
- 2:25Speaker 4: so we thought with AI being at the forefront of
- 2:27Speaker 4: everything right now, we were able to kind of tackle
- 2:30Speaker 4: this problem. Use AI to generate the same quality content
- 2:34Speaker 4: that you would get at any of these other other platforms,
- 2:36Speaker 4: and able to do it for extremely cheap and put
- 2:39Speaker 4: all of the exams on the one roof so you
- 2:41Speaker 4: don't have to go and pay for all these different things.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Right, So, our goal is really about education accessible.
- 2:46Speaker 4: And affordability, but in reality is the highest impact is
- 2:50Speaker 4: that these tests have been historically been massive, various kids
- 2:54Speaker 4: getting into selective schools or getting scholarships that they want
- 2:57Speaker 4: simply because students can't practice enough and be able to
- 3:00Speaker 4: do that. And then with entry level jobs like comp
- 3:03Speaker 4: tier certifications, again same thing super expensive and it's a
- 3:06Speaker 4: huge barrier for a lot of people.
- 3:08Speaker 3: And that's what we're trying to address.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Well, thank you for explaining that to me, because of
- 3:12Speaker 1: the fact that my show Money Making Conversation Massacres is
- 3:15Speaker 1: trying to bring down those barriers with information and you're
- 3:19Speaker 1: the type of person that I try to connect the
- 3:21Speaker 1: dots with. Now, when you talk about you know, the
- 3:25Speaker 1: traditional online and traditional app.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Base, they usually just do sat act.
- 3:32Speaker 1: How were you able to go beyond that because that's
- 3:37Speaker 1: the game change and for me, that's the reason I
- 3:39Speaker 1: have on this show. And let's start with the certification
- 3:43Speaker 1: part of your app, which is the IT, cyber and
- 3:47Speaker 1: healthcare just to name a few.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Yeah, so the reason why we're able to do everything
- 3:53Speaker 4: is to use generative AI. Right, we don't have to
- 3:55Speaker 4: go in automatic, we don't have to go in custom
- 3:59Speaker 4: create all these different exam. AI allows us to give
- 4:02Speaker 4: out we get weird to give our use unlimited practice exams,
- 4:06Speaker 4: unlimited practice questions, in depth, step by self solutions, and
- 4:09Speaker 4: we can predict what you're gonna make for you take
- 4:11Speaker 4: the test, which is the big thing. Right, So you
- 4:13Speaker 4: don't even need to go and take the acat LSADG
- 4:15Speaker 4: MAT or cybersecurity exam if you don't know if you're
- 4:18Speaker 4: going to pass it. It's like come Tia security plus
- 4:22Speaker 4: it's four hundred dollars just to take the exam. So
- 4:24Speaker 4: if you don't pass your first track, you got to
- 4:26Speaker 4: pay another four hundred dollars. And then that's just for
- 4:28Speaker 4: one of them. They're like fourteen different COMPTI asserts. Right,
- 4:31Speaker 4: so if you and to do their prep, it's like
- 4:33Speaker 4: five hundred dollars. You look at nine hundred dollars just
- 4:35Speaker 4: to pass this test, right, so if you don't pass
- 4:38Speaker 4: the first time, you have to do it again. And
- 4:40Speaker 4: you know with cybersecurity jobs being really key, So the
- 4:43Speaker 4: reason why we focus a lot on our professional certification
- 4:46Speaker 4: side on it and healthcare because those are two of
- 4:49Speaker 4: the most in demand fields that are always gone. So
- 4:51Speaker 4: we do in collects so our ns, we do CNA
- 4:53Speaker 4: exams you want to be a nurse. We also have
- 4:55Speaker 4: practice so for people that want to become teachers, because
- 4:58Speaker 4: I don't know, if you know, only four twenty four percent.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Of teachers actually passed to practical the first.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Try, and a lot of students of color who become
- 5:06Speaker 4: teachers don't actually takes them three to five times to
- 5:09Speaker 4: pass it. Sometimes they just stop, you know. So we
- 5:12Speaker 4: are literally have the inability to prepare for the practice
- 5:14Speaker 4: exam has caused a teacher shortage in our economy. Come
- 5:18Speaker 4: TIA is I mean you can go and get jobs
- 5:21Speaker 4: in the federal workforce or entry level jobs who's out
- 5:23Speaker 4: a degree? You have to come TIA certification. So when
- 5:25Speaker 4: you look at people earning more money, so imagine someone
- 5:28Speaker 4: who doesn't have a degree just went to high school,
- 5:30Speaker 4: had the ged. All they need to do is, you know,
- 5:32Speaker 4: pass this exam and they can go out make an
- 5:34Speaker 4: eighty starting salary eighty to one hundred K a year, right,
- 5:37Speaker 4: So that's what we're trying to do. That's why it's
- 5:39Speaker 4: so important to do that. But because we're able to
- 5:41Speaker 4: use Generator that we are able to be able to
- 5:43Speaker 4: compass all these different exams, be able to help as
- 5:46Speaker 4: many people as possible, give them as much practice as
- 5:48Speaker 4: they need. And the biggest thing that people like about
- 5:50Speaker 4: PATH is that we're letting them know they're going to
- 5:52Speaker 4: pass where they take the test, So they're like, hey,
- 5:53Speaker 4: I'm about to go and take the test about knowing
- 5:55Speaker 4: they're going to pass. So we're so being able to
- 5:57Speaker 4: do that by default we save them money when more
- 6:00Speaker 4: most people don't pass come Field the first time, so
- 6:01Speaker 4: it's like they're likely spending almost eight hundred to one
- 6:04Speaker 4: thousand dollars, so we're cutting We're saving all of these
- 6:07Speaker 4: people thousands of dollars and ensuring they pass the exams,
- 6:11Speaker 4: which which makes especially low income people of color be
- 6:15Speaker 4: able to pass these exams, being able to get these
- 6:17Speaker 4: certifications and get the jobs they need without having to wait,
- 6:20Speaker 4: you know, to make extra money just to keep taking
- 6:22Speaker 4: these exams over and over and over again.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Open their path.
- 6:25Speaker 1: As you speak, Christopher, I get more and more excited
- 6:28Speaker 1: about what you're talking about.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I'm talking to Christopher Gray.
- 6:30Speaker 1: He's the CEO and co founder of Path and AI
- 6:34Speaker 1: power platform transforming away students and professional prefare for critical exams. Now,
- 6:40Speaker 1: let's talk about where can we find path or is
- 6:43Speaker 1: there an app for a path?
- 6:46Speaker 4: So Path, you can go to our website yourpath dot
- 6:49Speaker 4: ai again.
- 6:51Speaker 2: So your path while you while your path.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Yes and yep, your path dot ai or just google
- 6:58Speaker 4: path test prep and we'll come right up. So go
- 7:01Speaker 4: on Google Google Path test prep will come up. Google
- 7:04Speaker 4: Path AI test Prep will come up right away, and
- 7:06Speaker 4: then you'll you'll be direct to our platform so and
- 7:09Speaker 4: so and just for just for example, like you go
- 7:12Speaker 4: to kaplan to stay for the act and act and
- 7:14Speaker 4: you have to pay for different ones. It's like twelve
- 7:16Speaker 4: hundred dollars, sixty dollars or you can pay ten dollars
- 7:20Speaker 4: a month, so we are.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Usually sixty dollars. Did you say sixty dollars?
- 7:25Speaker 4: Yeah exactly, So yeah, I don cost then and then
- 7:29Speaker 4: when I look at and through comp to you have
- 7:31Speaker 4: about twelve different certifications to prepare for each of them,
- 7:34Speaker 4: five hundred dollars for each preparation surgery, and then sixty
- 7:38Speaker 4: dollars you get a prep for all of them.
- 7:40Speaker 3: So you're saving literally.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Thousands, let's say just put it out there, thousands of
- 7:46Speaker 1: dollars preparing for jobs that can change your lifestyle and
- 7:50Speaker 1: your future.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Within that, what's the preparation time?
- 7:54Speaker 1: When you go and walk us through the steps of
- 7:56Speaker 1: somebody who's interested in certification for SAT but let's go
- 8:01Speaker 1: to I T I T certification, what's the what's the process?
- 8:05Speaker 4: So a lot of people you want to you want
- 8:07Speaker 4: to prepare for the course. So the BEAUTI A certificse
- 8:09Speaker 4: you get the certification. That's a step that you know
- 8:11Speaker 4: this mas heire and that can just get you the job. Right,
- 8:13Speaker 4: So that's why it's really really important. So the step
- 8:15Speaker 4: is that you want to prepare for the prepare do
- 8:18Speaker 4: like cybersecurity courses. Either you can do it in college,
- 8:21Speaker 4: community you can do a poor universities community college, you
- 8:23Speaker 4: can stand on your own.
- 8:24Speaker 3: That's the beau the of it. Right.
- 8:25Speaker 4: A lot of times you don't actually need to go
- 8:27Speaker 4: to college to get certified in these exams, Like it's
- 8:30Speaker 4: like the college courses actually teaching get certified because you
- 8:32Speaker 4: can go and get the degree. But you have a certification,
- 8:34Speaker 4: it doesn't matter, right. So so you so you want
- 8:37Speaker 4: to take a course on cybersecurity. Then you want to
- 8:40Speaker 4: take enough to where you are able to be prepared
- 8:42Speaker 4: to take to come tea exam. You know the different
- 8:45Speaker 4: and you and now they have Microsoft for jeer because
- 8:47Speaker 4: I just come teas Microsoft for a Zure AWS, that's all.
- 8:50Speaker 4: And we have a Zure and AWS and are on
- 8:52Speaker 4: our platform too. We have all of them. So you
- 8:55Speaker 4: want to be able to take the exam. So what
- 8:56Speaker 4: you do is you take the course, then you go
- 8:59Speaker 4: and try to certification the goals that you passing your
- 9:01Speaker 4: first stry right, you're able to get the certification. Then
- 9:04Speaker 4: when you're then in your job search, you're able to
- 9:07Speaker 4: like just go to any search or any job that
- 9:09Speaker 4: require comes to you and you're able to pofit. Those jobs. Again,
- 9:12Speaker 4: you don't even need a degree. So if you're able
- 9:14Speaker 4: to get those certifications, you're able to do that. And
- 9:16Speaker 4: what's happening with it specifically is that AI is making
- 9:20Speaker 4: cybersecurity and IT jobs go way up, right because now
- 9:24Speaker 4: we need that AI is running around with AI agents
- 9:26Speaker 4: doing this, AII just taking your credit card like all
- 9:29Speaker 4: this impersonating people. There's going to be more of a
- 9:31Speaker 4: need of cybersecurity certification. So that's one reason why come
- 9:35Speaker 4: to you said we're going to come, you know, get
- 9:37Speaker 4: the come to your certification. Brother used to be one
- 9:39Speaker 4: fifty dollars. This year they made a four hundred. They said, look,
- 9:42Speaker 4: we know y'all need this, so we go, we go
- 9:44Speaker 4: make more money. Right, so we're seeing like that search.
- 9:47Speaker 4: So that's the process. You find a way to educate
- 9:50Speaker 4: yourself on cybersecurity, prepare to take the exam, and then
- 9:53Speaker 4: get the certification. Paths in the middle where we're helping
- 9:56Speaker 4: you prepare for the exam so you can get the
- 9:58Speaker 4: certification and as many and may ensure that you pass
- 10:01Speaker 4: on here first try saving you money and just make
- 10:03Speaker 4: sure you get the job. And then we're also going
- 10:04Speaker 4: to evolve into other things as well, because a lot
- 10:06Speaker 4: of so because you could take one IT exam, but
- 10:09Speaker 4: you have to take others, like sometimes you need three
- 10:12Speaker 4: certificase the more you have, the better we have. So
- 10:14Speaker 4: we put all that on one platform and make sure
- 10:16Speaker 4: that if your job said, oh this is great, but
- 10:18Speaker 4: to get this.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Promotion, you need Azure. You need a that we had
- 10:21Speaker 3: people want to get better.
- 10:23Speaker 5: Please don't go anywhere. We'll be right back with more
- 10:27Speaker 5: Money Making Conversations Masterclass. Welcome back to the Money Making
- 10:38Speaker 5: Conversations Masterclass, hosted by Rashaan McDonald.
- 10:51Speaker 2: I'm talking to Christopher Grave.
- 10:53Speaker 1: If you're hearing this information and you're like, wow, I
- 10:55Speaker 1: gotta find out where this is a go to your
- 10:58Speaker 1: path dot ai that's your why. Oh you arepath dot
- 11:03Speaker 1: ai and you get more information. Hey, Christopher, when I
- 11:05Speaker 1: when I talk about this process because AI just popped
- 11:09Speaker 1: on the scene recently, it's been around, but everybody's talking
- 11:12Speaker 1: about it, like just by the last couple of years.
- 11:15Speaker 1: When did you launch this company and when did you
- 11:17Speaker 1: introduce AI into the process.
- 11:20Speaker 4: So, actually just lost it last year, so August of
- 11:23Speaker 4: last year. So so, but I came off my other company,
- 11:27Speaker 4: Scholarly with health students find money for college. So I
- 11:29Speaker 4: sold that company a year and a half ago then
- 11:31Speaker 4: started this company. So it's just been around a year
- 11:34Speaker 4: so and we've had a lot of success. We had
- 11:36Speaker 4: thousands and thousands of people used the platform passing their
- 11:39Speaker 4: example on the first try. We have people getting increasing
- 11:41Speaker 4: their att score, increasing that school. We have schools using
- 11:44Speaker 4: the platform. We have like cybersecurity becomings in the platform,
- 11:48Speaker 4: have universities using the platform.
- 11:50Speaker 3: So and you can you could just go and get
- 11:52Speaker 3: it yourself too. You don't.
- 11:52Speaker 4: You don't need to be a part of an organization
- 11:55Speaker 4: to get it. But the idea is that we saw
- 11:58Speaker 4: this problem and we saw that nobody of using this problem,
- 12:01Speaker 4: using AI to solve this problem. We saw that everything
- 12:03Speaker 4: in the market is like charging students thousands of dollars.
- 12:06Speaker 4: And the reason they do it, they're like, we know
- 12:08Speaker 4: you're going to pay us because we know that you
- 12:10Speaker 4: are associating this purchase with like a higher income. Right,
- 12:13Speaker 4: so we know that if you pay us three thousand
- 12:15Speaker 4: dollars you're going to make you know you're going to
- 12:17Speaker 4: go and we're unlocking one hundred thousand dollars a year
- 12:19Speaker 4: for a year or something like that.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Right.
- 12:21Speaker 4: But the thing is, at the same time, of course,
- 12:24Speaker 4: when people of color are not you know, that's the
- 12:26Speaker 4: that's the So the thing about this AI race is
- 12:28Speaker 4: that at the end of the day, as trained on something.
- 12:31Speaker 4: And when you have people who think like that, they're thinking, oh,
- 12:35Speaker 4: they're thinking they're brothers. They're thinking of people that look
- 12:37Speaker 4: like them, that come from the same background they come from.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Who can afford to pay three thousand dollars, right, take
- 12:42Speaker 4: a a person of color, we from a little arge background.
- 12:45Speaker 4: I have another lens where Okay, I see how this
- 12:48Speaker 4: stuff is just as important as you are. But I
- 12:50Speaker 4: know that not only do I want to make this
- 12:52Speaker 4: more affordable, but actually, from a financial perspective, it's better
- 12:55Speaker 4: business to make this more affortable because I get to
- 12:57Speaker 4: take your market and I get a larger market people,
- 13:00Speaker 4: So I end up making more money and helping more
- 13:02Speaker 4: people that would not have been able for that's not able.
- 13:05Speaker 3: To afford that.
- 13:06Speaker 4: And for context, when I was in high school, I
- 13:08Speaker 4: have to go carry these little big att books around
- 13:11Speaker 4: and you got like one or two practice and then
- 13:13Speaker 4: once that you didn't there's nothing else and you have
- 13:16Speaker 4: to like go and buy another course. And then my mom,
- 13:18Speaker 4: you know, we can afford twove hundred dollars to pay
- 13:20Speaker 4: for a prins to review and all that stuff.
- 13:22Speaker 3: So that was a big barrier.
- 13:23Speaker 4: Right, So now if I have paths, I can just
- 13:25Speaker 4: do a study as many times I want predict when
- 13:27Speaker 4: I run to take the exam and then be able
- 13:29Speaker 4: to do better. So you're gonna, I think we're going
- 13:31Speaker 4: to see that. I you know, everyone's trying to figure
- 13:33Speaker 4: out how do we fight or go again, you know,
- 13:37Speaker 4: do what we need to do for this new administration.
- 13:39Speaker 4: And I think that if they bring up college, if
- 13:41Speaker 4: they reinstate college interest exams or become more certification, because
- 13:45Speaker 4: you know, they've already said they're going to try to
- 13:47Speaker 4: re allow pilgramts to be used for like boot camps
- 13:51Speaker 4: and other things.
- 13:51Speaker 3: So that's already got to happen.
- 13:53Speaker 4: So we want to make sure that we're at the
- 13:55Speaker 4: forefront when when they're coming back and saying you need
- 13:57Speaker 4: to make this score to get into college, to get
- 13:59Speaker 4: this college, you need to this certification. We want to
- 14:01Speaker 4: be on the forefront of that using AI to make
- 14:04Speaker 4: sure that our people can get these certifications, get into
- 14:08Speaker 4: college and still not have to pay thousands.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Of dollars, you know, and having that be a barrier.
- 14:14Speaker 1: First of all, Christopher, you're a good communicator that helps
- 14:17Speaker 1: and to convey this message. But let me give more
- 14:20Speaker 1: detail on this because of the fact that you said, Rishan,
- 14:23Speaker 1: why are you excited about PATH? Because I do a
- 14:25Speaker 1: lot of sat ACT interviews and those are about youth.
- 14:29Speaker 1: That's about teenagers and parents trying to encourage them for
- 14:32Speaker 1: a better.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Life, which is fantastic. It never really talks.
- 14:35Speaker 1: About adults because adults are moved on where the PATH
- 14:38Speaker 1: program gives you certification opportunities and what I call adult
- 14:43Speaker 1: jobs where they may not want to go to college.
- 14:46Speaker 1: They may have graduated from high school already and they
- 14:48Speaker 1: can go in get their GA d j ED.
- 14:51Speaker 2: If they didn't graduate, they can go in and.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Get it, certification of cyber certification, healthcare certification. All these
- 14:58Speaker 1: things are important. If you an adult listening to this now, they.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Still do the A set, they still do the ACT.
- 15:05Speaker 1: If you're a parent and you want to get your
- 15:08Speaker 1: child involved in academic training for these test scores, they
- 15:12Speaker 1: do that. I don't want to leave that part of
- 15:14Speaker 1: their program off because that's very important. But I also
- 15:17Speaker 1: know that this is a program that young adults, adults
- 15:21Speaker 1: in their thirties, people want to do career changes can
- 15:24Speaker 1: take advantage of what PATH is bringing to the table.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Am I correcting what I'm saying there.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Christopher, exactly. And also if you're going to grad school,
- 15:32Speaker 3: we cover g e G.
- 15:34Speaker 4: MATT, LSAT and MCAT too, So like if people are
- 15:37Speaker 4: going to grad school, that's the big thing, and that's
- 15:39Speaker 4: actually those tests are more expensive to study more than
- 15:42Speaker 4: any of them. Right, So if you want to be
- 15:44Speaker 4: a lawyer, if you want to go to grad school,
- 15:46Speaker 4: if you want to Jerry, if you want to go
- 15:49Speaker 4: to business school, if you want to go to med school,
- 15:51Speaker 4: we help that. We cover that too. And it's exactly
- 15:53Speaker 4: as you said, right, like we our goal is to
- 15:55Speaker 4: give the same quality content but reducing the price to
- 15:59Speaker 4: make that more for it, but also helping people out.
- 16:01Speaker 3: And I do believe that we're moving.
- 16:04Speaker 4: To a more skill certification based society where like a
- 16:08Speaker 4: certific being able to be certified and something is going
- 16:10Speaker 4: to mean more than a degree because we're seeing that
- 16:13Speaker 4: there are people with your degree so they went to
- 16:15Speaker 4: this X amount school and then come in and can't
- 16:17Speaker 4: really do anything. So like you know, versus their people
- 16:20Speaker 4: who didn't go to college, who actually spent four years
- 16:22Speaker 4: learning a skill, who are being certified as something, you know,
- 16:26Speaker 4: it end up being more valuable.
- 16:28Speaker 1: So let me ask you this question to your scholar right,
- 16:31Speaker 1: scholars scholarly right.
- 16:33Speaker 3: Yeah, schli was my company that I used to have.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, cool, Now that was successful for you and
- 16:39Speaker 1: there's the same academic So it gave you the basis
- 16:42Speaker 1: for path right, it gave you the foundation and the
- 16:45Speaker 1: credibility to achieve the levels of certification and approved certification
- 16:50Speaker 1: that you are using now on path.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Am I correct in saying.
- 16:53Speaker 3: That, yep, yep, okay cool.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Now you're on Shark Tank. Why did you go on
- 16:57Speaker 2: Shark Tank?
- 16:59Speaker 4: I went on at the college students and I was
- 17:02Speaker 4: graduating graduate in college my senior year and I went
- 17:05Speaker 4: on shark I mean it was the visibility I was
- 17:07Speaker 4: able to get Damon John and Logan here and investors
- 17:10Speaker 4: and I don't know if you know, but like we
- 17:12Speaker 4: you Sarty the biggest fight in Shark tank history, which.
- 17:14Speaker 3: Ended up going viral. You know, we just had tom
- 17:17Speaker 3: success from that.
- 17:18Speaker 4: But you know, shark Tank at the time, you know,
- 17:20Speaker 4: at that that was the peak when you got like
- 17:22Speaker 4: ten million views. That's like six seven million dollars that
- 17:27Speaker 4: you Yeah, so, and most founders would have to raise
- 17:30Speaker 4: capital to spend to get that. So, so Shark tank
- 17:33Speaker 4: was just great and put us on the map.
- 17:35Speaker 3: It gave like instant.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Grand brand credibility and you know, you know, you may
- 17:39Speaker 4: have heard it here first, but there's the chance I
- 17:41Speaker 4: may be doing it again.
- 17:42Speaker 1: So really, really, I've got to ask you, Christal, your
- 17:48Speaker 1: platform sounds fantastic.
- 17:49Speaker 2: They feel like they're generating the revenue.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Why would you want to go on a show and
- 17:54Speaker 1: give a part of your your equity for feet when
- 17:59Speaker 1: it seems like you can you can generate the revenue yourself.
- 18:04Speaker 4: I think it depends on how fast you want to grow.
- 18:06Speaker 4: I think it depends on I'm scaling and end up
- 18:09Speaker 4: being a little bit of teachers in terms of like
- 18:11Speaker 4: if I want to do it or not. But I think,
- 18:12Speaker 4: but I think you're right. But I think and I
- 18:14Speaker 4: think that that's another conversation that's happening in the age
- 18:17Speaker 4: of AI right now. You can build a strong business
- 18:21Speaker 4: and it can be extremely profitable with very with a
- 18:24Speaker 4: minimal head count, very little and very little money because
- 18:27Speaker 4: now a lot of marketing and brand stuff, Like I
- 18:30Speaker 4: have you how many ass I've seen that are like
- 18:32Speaker 4: AI actors that are like and I'm thinking they're real people, right,
- 18:35Speaker 4: you know, there's so much happening, so you can spend
- 18:37Speaker 4: so little to start a company. Now you're seeing all
- 18:40Speaker 4: over in the startup community their company making twenty thirty
- 18:43Speaker 4: million dollars with ten people like right, like, So, I
- 18:46Speaker 4: think you're right in the sense that you know, we're
- 18:48Speaker 4: moving into a world where you can build a big business.
- 18:51Speaker 4: It can make a lot of money. You don't need
- 18:54Speaker 4: to do because people don't get the downsides of raising
- 18:57Speaker 4: capital because people get, oh, I raised as much money.
- 18:59Speaker 4: I'm I'm not, but they don't know. Once you get to.
- 19:02Speaker 3: Looted to you, you get aboard you.
- 19:04Speaker 4: Then you are selling knowledge on your equity, but you're
- 19:06Speaker 4: selling the right to determine when you sell your company.
- 19:10Speaker 4: So somebody can say, oh, oh here, you got one
- 19:13Speaker 4: hundred million dollar offer to someone to buy your company.
- 19:15Speaker 4: You may make sixty million from that. But the VC
- 19:18Speaker 4: who you raised twenty million from, say, you know what,
- 19:22Speaker 4: I got a three hundred million dollar fund that doesn't
- 19:24Speaker 4: return my fund, So I'm going to block this deal
- 19:26Speaker 4: and make you work another five years, so that BC
- 19:28Speaker 4: just you just so it's like a fautistic bargaining with
- 19:31Speaker 4: a devil's contract, where you you got all this person's money, right,
- 19:34Speaker 4: and they gave you money. They gave you like a
- 19:36Speaker 4: lot of money, so you got to do it. To say,
- 19:38Speaker 4: but in exchange, you're also giving them the right to
- 19:40Speaker 4: determine when you generate well for yourself. And that's what
- 19:44Speaker 4: you're giving up, and that's not a good place to
- 19:46Speaker 4: be in. And I will tell you I have friends
- 19:48Speaker 4: who have had to turn down millions of dollars simply
- 19:51Speaker 4: because their investor said this is not enough. It would
- 19:54Speaker 4: have been life changing for them, but then that's like, well,
- 19:55Speaker 4: this doesn't return my fund. So so I think you're right,
- 19:58Speaker 4: you you it, you really need the exposure and the capital,
- 20:02Speaker 4: do it because some parts you need it. But just
- 20:05Speaker 4: but I think today you just got to make sure
- 20:06Speaker 4: because you're right, you are giving a lot of your
- 20:08Speaker 4: company and people don't get the the.
- 20:11Speaker 3: Detail, the legal details that go into those deals.
- 20:13Speaker 1: The next thing, they don't want to put a board
- 20:15Speaker 1: in place. Next thing, you know, they're gonna boot you out.
- 20:17Speaker 1: You be worried about that, man, they vot you out
- 20:19Speaker 1: of your own company, Okay.
- 20:20Speaker 3: Exactly, Yeah, I'm happy.
- 20:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm happy you tell people that because that's a
- 20:24Speaker 4: big thing that no one knows like you can get
- 20:26Speaker 4: booted out your own company, and.
- 20:27Speaker 2: They say the word board get nervous.
- 20:29Speaker 4: Yeah, so literally like I that that is if you
- 20:34Speaker 4: when you are negotiating any deal, you want to avoid
- 20:37Speaker 4: a board or as long as possible, like raise when
- 20:41Speaker 4: you have the leverage, because when you get a board,
- 20:43Speaker 4: it's not even when you're giving up the equity. When
- 20:45Speaker 4: you get a board, you are no longer in charge
- 20:47Speaker 4: of your own company. Like some BC who got like
- 20:50Speaker 4: an NBA who's never built anything in there in their life,
- 20:53Speaker 4: is going to tell you that if you don't do this,
- 20:56Speaker 4: if you don't make this decision, I'm gonna do this.
- 20:59Speaker 4: It becomes you have people like you can fall out
- 21:02Speaker 4: with the book like they can. Somebody can just not
- 21:04Speaker 4: like you. Someone can do the person who you raise
- 21:06Speaker 4: money profit can switch them out. They're people who just
- 21:09Speaker 4: like they could just block a decision of ego. They
- 21:10Speaker 4: could say, well, you know, I'll take this company, so
- 21:12Speaker 4: you can't do this.
- 21:13Speaker 3: You can't.
- 21:13Speaker 4: They can turn with you yourself. So if you got
- 21:16Speaker 4: two kids and you need a payers all day, right, no,
- 21:18Speaker 4: you can. It gets very and people don't talk about that.
- 21:21Speaker 3: People.
- 21:21Speaker 4: You know, there was the CEO Uber who got booted
- 21:23Speaker 4: out his company. Right, that was the big deal. You know,
- 21:25Speaker 4: you've seen it happen a lot. And you know, something
- 21:27Speaker 4: my zerker Berg did that nobody knew was that he
- 21:30Speaker 4: actually kept he kept a lot of his he had
- 21:34Speaker 4: he got a board, but he had a lot of
- 21:35Speaker 4: protections where he basically essentially had a board but no
- 21:38Speaker 4: one can outvote him.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Basically, it was like, okay, you have a board.
- 21:40Speaker 2: But you know, Christopher, a lot of people don't know that. Something.
- 21:43Speaker 1: When people invest in your company and they bring up
- 21:46Speaker 1: the word board, they try to put a majority seats
- 21:49Speaker 1: that they own. So if the board members are five,
- 21:52Speaker 1: they might say we want three seats exactly yep.
- 21:55Speaker 4: And because and they do that alongside the other investments.
- 21:58Speaker 4: When you're raising money, you're not like raiding from one firm.
- 22:01Speaker 4: So in their mind, hey, you're the found that's operating
- 22:03Speaker 4: the business, but we are collectively giving money to the business,
- 22:06Speaker 4: and we want more board teath because we and we're
- 22:10Speaker 4: giving you money, but we need the power to protect
- 22:12Speaker 4: our investments, right right.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Phys a great conversation, Chris, Christopher, I know that the
- 22:19Speaker 1: ability to talk to people at this level on my
- 22:22Speaker 1: show and communicate these values, you know, with DEI sitting
- 22:25Speaker 1: out there, which is which annoys me because DEI is
- 22:29Speaker 1: has become a political tool. But then what you fight
- 22:32Speaker 1: political tools is by programs like Path. With Path educates
- 22:38Speaker 1: you at a less financial risk, I should say, because
- 22:42Speaker 1: a lot of the courses that you would have to
- 22:44Speaker 1: pay to participate, you pay it a lesser, more accommodating
- 22:47Speaker 1: an available amount with Path.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Can you explain that to everybody one more time if
- 22:51Speaker 2: we close out the interview.
- 22:54Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that you know, Yeah, so d I
- 22:56Speaker 4: is under attacked. It's not an attacked, it's it's just
- 22:58Speaker 4: really it's under attack. But it's and you're just singing
- 23:01Speaker 4: it across the board. So I think it's really, really,
- 23:04Speaker 4: really important for us to figure out a way to
- 23:07Speaker 4: take charge and be focused in this chaos. And I
- 23:10Speaker 4: think that I really encourage. I mean, if you guys
- 23:12Speaker 4: see what's happening in DC, all these federal workers, it
- 23:15Speaker 4: used to be work for at least especially for people
- 23:17Speaker 4: of color, that you thought going to join the working
- 23:20Speaker 4: for the government was the most secure job you can
- 23:22Speaker 4: never have. Hell, you thought working for Facebook and Meta
- 23:25Speaker 4: and all these amazons. You thought those like you, you
- 23:27Speaker 4: were set for your career, you were set for life.
- 23:29Speaker 4: There are people that are the rugs being pulled up
- 23:31Speaker 4: on you. So I think that you know, I encourage
- 23:34Speaker 4: people to learn skills in AI, get certified because these
- 23:37Speaker 4: cybersecurity IT jobs are going to be the the jobs
- 23:41Speaker 4: where AI engineers are going to be, you know, are
- 23:43Speaker 4: going to be kind of the kings of this market.
- 23:45Speaker 4: But I think with this to be able to do that,
- 23:48Speaker 4: way we want to come in again is ultimately helping
- 23:51Speaker 4: you get certified, helping you be able to be prepared
- 23:53Speaker 4: for these jobs. And eventually we want to be able
- 23:55Speaker 4: to create our own certificates. We want to be able
- 23:57Speaker 4: to create certificate on path where you can get certified,
- 24:00Speaker 4: you know, on our platform to be to say you
- 24:02Speaker 4: know AI, say you know cloud competing and all that stuff. Right,
- 24:04Speaker 4: so I think that is going to be really important.
- 24:07Speaker 4: But like right now, there's not a lot every one
- 24:10Speaker 4: of against stuff the world, the nation has voted against
- 24:14Speaker 4: you know, our people, and I think it's important for
- 24:16Speaker 4: us to be able to do things support businesses that
- 24:19Speaker 4: are run by people that look like you hopefully or
- 24:23Speaker 4: just supporting people you know who are minorities. And also
- 24:26Speaker 4: being able to be more entrepreneurial because again I have
- 24:30Speaker 4: people who literally have had a job their entire career
- 24:33Speaker 4: as friends who are making like two hundred k plus
- 24:36Speaker 4: a year, who have not been able to find work
- 24:38Speaker 4: for six eight months and still looking for a job
- 24:41Speaker 4: because they're telling them that I don't need to pay
- 24:44Speaker 4: you two hundred fifty k a year because now because
- 24:46Speaker 4: of these AI tools, I can automate your job and
- 24:50Speaker 4: what you're doing. Now now that it was what was
- 24:52Speaker 4: taking cost on you forty hours, taking you forty hours
- 24:55Speaker 4: a week to do, I got ann AI agent that
- 24:58Speaker 4: can do it for five hours in a month. Right,
- 25:01Speaker 4: taking people Actually, what's happening is the more experienced people
- 25:04Speaker 4: are the people that are getting cut because they're the
- 25:06Speaker 4: higher state ones. Because you have this thing that's that
- 25:09Speaker 4: can take all your experience and say, I'm smarter than you,
- 25:11Speaker 4: so I don't need to pay. So the confidence say
- 25:13Speaker 4: I don't need to pay you know for that. Right,
- 25:15Speaker 4: So that's why I say, so get up skilled on AI,
- 25:18Speaker 4: get certified as much as you can.
- 25:20Speaker 3: Definitely use path at your path out AI.
- 25:23Speaker 4: And yeah, and we have to find a way to
- 25:25Speaker 4: make money, find a way to generate wealth and all
- 25:28Speaker 4: this chaos when.
- 25:28Speaker 1: You talk about lessons from building and scaling the business,
- 25:31Speaker 1: because we talked about that, why go on shock tank
- 25:35Speaker 1: and give away your business? Then we start talking about
- 25:37Speaker 1: the board and all that good stuff.
- 25:39Speaker 2: But the whole thing of scaling.
- 25:40Speaker 1: You know, because you have a popular app, you soul
- 25:43Speaker 1: that Sally May picked it up.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Now, what is the future of Path? Are you going
- 25:47Speaker 2: to do the same thing with Path? Are you going
- 25:49Speaker 2: to just scale it out and then sell it and
- 25:51Speaker 2: that next thing? I'll see you in Bermuda hanging out
- 25:53Speaker 2: looking good.
- 25:55Speaker 4: I think that you know my goal, right, I mean,
- 25:57Speaker 4: I think every founder builds a bitiness and I think
- 26:00Speaker 4: you should be focused on that.
- 26:01Speaker 3: Whether you want to go public.
- 26:02Speaker 4: I don't think you start a business with the idea
- 26:04Speaker 4: I'm started to sell it, right. I think every business
- 26:07Speaker 4: has to have an exit. I mean, I mean every
- 26:10Speaker 4: business is to go to create generational wealth for yourself,
- 26:13Speaker 4: whether you're passing that down to your kids, whether you
- 26:15Speaker 4: are an exit with your IPO. Because at some point
- 26:19Speaker 4: money will likely have to be raised and you have
- 26:21Speaker 4: to get people a turn of their investment. And that's
- 26:22Speaker 4: something I tell people. Another thing that you have to understand,
- 26:26Speaker 4: when you take money from people, you have to give
- 26:27Speaker 4: it back. So even the minute you raid any form
- 26:30Speaker 4: of capital from someone, they want exit. So you can't
- 26:33Speaker 4: in no world anybody I'm taking your money. I don't
- 26:35Speaker 4: want to say to company, I'm taking your money, okay, right,
- 26:38Speaker 4: So you just can't. Those things can't go hand in hand.
- 26:41Speaker 4: But I think but I think ultimately being able to
- 26:44Speaker 4: scale the business, being able to have as much grill
- 26:46Speaker 4: as you can is something that I think is really important.
- 26:49Speaker 4: But I think this era is different. I think you
- 26:52Speaker 4: are seeing big businesses generate a lot of revenue, be
- 26:55Speaker 4: really profitable with very little capital, very you know, not
- 26:59Speaker 4: as many people. And I think that is what I
- 27:01Speaker 4: want more founders to Harpong because I think that that
- 27:04Speaker 4: is going to be the future. And I think that
- 27:07Speaker 4: and I think that there's going to be a massive
- 27:09Speaker 4: goal where's and a lot.
- 27:10Speaker 3: Of money that's going to be made.
- 27:11Speaker 4: But I think that focus on building your company and
- 27:14Speaker 4: take and by the way Schollary was offered, we got there.
- 27:17Speaker 4: There were a bunch of companies that off the bands
- 27:19Speaker 4: of the ten years of me doing it. So you're
- 27:21Speaker 4: going to get exit, you gonna have a little opportunities.
- 27:23Speaker 4: But make sure you if you decide to sell your company,
- 27:25Speaker 4: which that's the path some people want to take, no
- 27:27Speaker 4: pun intended. You make sure that it's the opportunity for
- 27:31Speaker 4: you and think about and if you do want to
- 27:33Speaker 4: sell it, think about have a number in your mind,
- 27:35Speaker 4: because you may say sixty million, maybe enough, seventy million maybe,
- 27:39Speaker 4: et cetera. Because and then you may decide and let
- 27:41Speaker 4: that determine how much money you raise and what terms
- 27:43Speaker 4: you agree to you because you get to that point,
- 27:45Speaker 4: you get that board, you raise too much money, they're
- 27:47Speaker 4: not going to care about that. You get to walk
- 27:49Speaker 4: away with fifty million dollars and that gives you that
- 27:51Speaker 4: that generation well for you, your kids and their kids.
- 27:53Speaker 4: They're going to say that's not enough and they may
- 27:56Speaker 4: make And then also people don't know a board can
- 27:58Speaker 4: force you to sell for less than what you have
- 28:01Speaker 4: and actually get all that get all the money. Like
- 28:03Speaker 4: there's something called liquidation purposes that people don't talk about.
- 28:05Speaker 4: They can say, you know what, let's tell one hundred
- 28:08Speaker 4: and fifty million. But because of the terms, we get
- 28:10Speaker 4: all the money. You can get a million or a
- 28:12Speaker 4: salary or whatever, you get nothing. And that's another thing
- 28:15Speaker 4: to get us. So make sure that you scale your
- 28:17Speaker 4: business intelligently, make sure that you have gold in mind,
- 28:20Speaker 4: and make sure that you're strategic about how much you
- 28:23Speaker 4: weighs when you raise, and make sure that you are
- 28:25Speaker 4: you negotiate the best term cheat you can.
- 28:27Speaker 1: If you're just fantastic man as to tell everybody, have
- 28:30Speaker 1: we get in touch with you through your website?
- 28:33Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just you want to use path your paths
- 28:35Speaker 3: at AI.
- 28:36Speaker 4: If you want to follow me mostly active on LinkedIn
- 28:40Speaker 4: and Instagram.
- 28:40Speaker 2: Motor active What does that mean there? Christal multi active?
- 28:43Speaker 3: You know that'sund mostly active.
- 28:46Speaker 4: So my LinkedIn you just look at Christopher Gray path,
- 28:49Speaker 4: your outcome up and my ideas at CJ.
- 28:53Speaker 3: Gray nine to one.
- 28:56Speaker 2: You're awesome brother.
- 28:56Speaker 1: And if you if you sit back and you think
- 28:59Speaker 1: about your you know since you graduate from college, is
- 29:02Speaker 1: it's just the direction you saw yourself going, or you
- 29:06Speaker 1: were one of these people would go, I see an
- 29:08Speaker 1: opportunity and I build on it because a lot of
- 29:11Speaker 1: people are tied to fear, and fear creates a lack
- 29:16Speaker 1: of change, and you seem like you have a fearless personality.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Talk about your personality as we close out this show.
- 29:23Speaker 4: I think that for me when I went to college,
- 29:25Speaker 4: it was right the year with A Wall Street came out.
- 29:27Speaker 4: I want to go to Wall Street. I wanted I
- 29:29Speaker 4: wanted to make a lot of money. I liked finance.
- 29:32Speaker 4: I have an affinity for it. I studied, I did.
- 29:34Speaker 4: I did a lot of virtual like stock market trading
- 29:37Speaker 4: when I pole through, like the site that gave you
- 29:39Speaker 4: the virtual money and as seemingly the real market.
- 29:42Speaker 3: That was something and I was really good at it.
- 29:43Speaker 3: Made a lot of money.
- 29:44Speaker 4: I love it virtual money, but I'm okay, this is
- 29:46Speaker 4: And then ironically my first job, ironically I sold my
- 29:51Speaker 4: company to Salame and my first internship in college and
- 29:54Speaker 4: the only time I ever worked for someone before Salame
- 29:58Speaker 4: was actually Fanny Made.
- 30:00Speaker 3: In twenty ten.
- 30:01Speaker 4: And long story, sure, I learned that I didn't want
- 30:04Speaker 4: to work for some notework work for work for a
- 30:06Speaker 4: company anymore. I fell out with my boss and I
- 30:09Speaker 4: had I had an exit interview where I was probably
- 30:12Speaker 4: I was younger and I was more candid then I
- 30:15Speaker 4: am fresh out of Birmingham, but I think I didn't
- 30:18Speaker 4: have a plot of polish, and I was very honest
- 30:20Speaker 4: with her about how I felt about her. And then
- 30:23Speaker 4: I left and then yeah, and I didn't work for it,
- 30:27Speaker 4: so yeahs so and then also I became entrepreneur and
- 30:32Speaker 4: that worked out for me, and I realized in a
- 30:34Speaker 4: lot of the skills and self started being able to
- 30:37Speaker 4: It's something that I wanted to do, and entrepreneurship is
- 30:39Speaker 4: it for everyone.
- 30:40Speaker 3: It's a lot of risk.
- 30:42Speaker 4: But I tell people, I just posted the status today
- 30:44Speaker 4: showing telling people that if all these layoffs have been
- 30:48Speaker 4: taught to you, that at this point, getting a job
- 30:50Speaker 4: there's no I don't even know if there's a such
- 30:52Speaker 4: thing as a stable job anymore. So you might as
- 30:54Speaker 4: well take the risk and build something, take dreat generational
- 30:57Speaker 4: wealth for yourself and your kids, you know, because that
- 31:00Speaker 4: seem at this point that seems like the same level
- 31:02Speaker 4: of risk is going to work for somebody. And then
- 31:04Speaker 4: within a year you are displaced and then selling you
- 31:07Speaker 4: don't have you don't have a so out, you know,
- 31:08Speaker 4: you don't have, you know, any any way to take
- 31:11Speaker 4: care of your family. So so that's how I think
- 31:13Speaker 4: about it, and that's just kind of who I am.
- 31:16Speaker 4: I just I like to start a thing. I like
- 31:17Speaker 4: to build things. I don't think that I try to
- 31:19Speaker 4: build things to be rich. I think that wealth is
- 31:22Speaker 4: the byproduct of hard work and building something.
- 31:25Speaker 3: That adds value to the people you serve.
- 31:27Speaker 4: And I think that you know and that and you
- 31:29Speaker 4: should be rewarded for that with wealth. But like, I
- 31:32Speaker 4: don't just go I'll just trying away. That is just
- 31:33Speaker 4: getting money, right like, because I think that when the
- 31:35Speaker 4: people that have that mindset, I find they always fail
- 31:38Speaker 4: because if you don't, if you're not truly building something
- 31:41Speaker 4: to add value to others, you don't, you're likely not
- 31:44Speaker 4: or frankly don't deserve to be able to generate wealth
- 31:47Speaker 4: for yourself because those things have to be handed.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Wow, he's a secret agent.
- 31:52Speaker 1: Man who's no longer a secret my man, Christopher Gray Brother,
- 31:55Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you somebody, I've been doing this long time,
- 31:58Speaker 1: and you are in an interview date. Excit to me
- 32:00Speaker 1: because I do see what you're doing is changing the
- 32:02Speaker 1: world and your platform. I'm highly recommending people just go
- 32:07Speaker 1: and examine it and then see the value it can
- 32:11Speaker 1: bring to your life. You're probably your child's life, to
- 32:13Speaker 1: your person you might have in your life personally, emotionally,
- 32:17Speaker 1: and this is about seeing opportunities.
- 32:19Speaker 2: And I tell everybody.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Just because you're thirty, just because you're forty, just because
- 32:22Speaker 1: you're fifty, just because you're sixty. These type of opportunities
- 32:25Speaker 1: that Path is bringing to the table can impact your
- 32:28Speaker 1: life both professionally but also financially. Christopher, great, thank you
- 32:33Speaker 1: for coming on Money Making Conversation Masterclass.
