- 0:00Welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio, a program for teens and almost.
- 0:04Teens to better understand that the gospel of Jesus Christ is relevant in their
- 0:09lives, and it's a place where your questions about faith and religion can be answered.
- 0:14And now, here's your host, Deacon Al.
- 0:17Thank you, John, and welcome to Good News. This is Deacon Al again.
- 0:21I'm an ordained deacon of the Peoria Diocese, and I come to you live kind of
- 0:27on Memorex here on Catholic Spirit Radio every Saturday and Sunday evening at
- 0:338 o'clock. We share the gospel.
- 0:35We talk about how the Word of Christ affects us in our lives,
- 0:40especially how it affects the lives of teenagers.
- 0:42And I love talking to teenagers as a scout leader for almost 40 years.
- 0:48I worked with teenagers almost every day of the week and love their energy,
- 0:54love their company, love their wit.
- 0:56And it's wonderful now in my ministry that I still get to talk to teenagers
- 1:01and now share the joys of Christ as before we were sharing the joys of sailing
- 1:06and camping and hiking and the views of the nature that God created for us.
- 1:11And now I get to talk about the son that he shared with us.
- 1:15And I just love that about my deaconate ministries.
- 1:18So, we're heading into Palm Sunday this weekend, which means we're just a week
- 1:24away from Feast of the Resurrection, from Easter, from the highlight of our liturgical year,
- 1:30from really the whole history of the Church unfolds during this next week.
- 1:35This is where Christ establishes all kinds of things from the Mass,
- 1:41communion, service to others through the washing of feet, the fact that.
- 1:48To lead, you have to serve. And I think that's such an important lesson for us to learn.
- 1:54I think if our government officials would learn that, we'd be in much better shape.
- 2:00That leadership isn't about power and authority.
- 2:03Leadership is about genuine service and self-sacrifice to others.
- 2:07And we just don't see enough of that nowadays from any political party.
- 2:12No matter what side of the fence you stand on, we're not doing the job for others that we need to do.
- 2:18We especially aren't taking care of the poor and the hungry and the immigrant,
- 2:24the imprisoned, the elderly.
- 2:26All the things that Christ spoke of, we do very, very badly in our government.
- 2:32And thank goodness we have so many Christian faiths who have ministries reaching
- 2:37out into the communities to make up for what our government doesn't want to do or doesn't find...
- 2:45The time or the monetary benefit of doing, but is so important to our life here on earth.
- 2:52We're also going to, in today's program, we have a little special presentation.
- 2:56I recruited a couple of my parishioners, Denise and Bill, to come in and help
- 3:01us with our gospel reading, which is The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, According to Mark.
- 3:08And so, in just a few minutes, we'll be going to a reading of the Passion and
- 3:14working with my eighth grade confirmation class in our last class.
- 3:19I asked, okay, we've been together now for months. You're weeks away from your confirmation.
- 3:24Tell me something that you've learned about your faith that you didn't know
- 3:28before or didn't fully understand.
- 3:31And the conversation quickly turned to two things.
- 3:36A lot of people, and these young people especially, these eighth graders,
- 3:41had no idea how truly horrific a crucifixion is.
- 3:48We spent a lot of time just going through the Passion and explaining what's
- 3:53actually involved in scourging and in the crucifixion itself,
- 3:58and through the Stations of the Cross, studying what actually happened in those
- 4:04short hours between Christ's arrest and His resurrection.
- 4:08And it really became evident to them that this truly was a huge sacrifice for
- 4:16Christ to make in his humanity.
- 4:18What he suffered through this is just.
- 4:22It brings tears to my eyes every time I hear the Passion, it brings tears to
- 4:26my eyes, thinking that we could take another person, let alone the Son of God,
- 4:32but take anybody and subject them to this kind of torture here.
- 4:38Through no guilt of their own, Jesus was not found guilty of any crime.
- 4:43Instead, he hung on the cross in place of another criminal.
- 4:48And that criminal is us. He died for our sins.
- 4:52And now on Palm Sunday, we have this joyous moment as Christ enters into Jerusalem
- 4:57and is given the reception of royalty.
- 5:01And in just a week from now, we're going to hang him on a cross to die.
- 5:07And that is such a tragic story.
- 5:11And I'm glad that the eighth graders, one of the things they've gotten out of
- 5:15this year is to understand just the incredible depth of Christ's love,
- 5:21that he would subject himself to the pain and the agony he did just so that
- 5:27he could show to us that there is nothing to fear in death and that on the other
- 5:33side of that is a new life.
- 5:36So, I look forward to sharing today's Gospel reading to you of the Passion.
- 5:41We're going to pause for just a couple of moments, and we will return to the
- 5:47Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ.

- 6:25The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to Mark The Passover and the
- 6:31Feast of Unleavened Bread were to take place in two days' time.
- 6:35So the chief priests and the scribes
- 6:38were seeking a way to arrest him by treachery and to put him to death.
- 6:44They said, Not during the festival, for fear that there may be a riot among the people.
- 6:51When he was in Bethany, reclining at table, In the house of Simon the leper,
- 6:57a woman came with an alabaster jar of perfumed oil, costly genuine spagnard.
- 7:05She broke the alabaster jar and poured it on his head. There were some who were indignant.
- 7:12Why has there been this waste of perfume oil?
- 7:15It could have been sold for more than 300 days' wages and the money given to the poor.
- 7:22They were infuriated with her.
- 7:24Jesus said, Let her alone. Why do you make trouble for her? She has done a good thing for me.
- 7:32The poor you will always have with you, and whenever you wish, you can do good to them.
- 7:37But you will not always have me. She has done what she could.
- 7:41She has anticipated anointing my body for burial.
- 7:45Amen, I say to you. Whenever the gospel is proclaimed to the whole world,
- 7:50what she has done will be told in memory of her.
- 7:54Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went off to the chief priests to hand him over to them.
- 8:02When they heard him, they were pleased and promised to pay him money.
- 8:08Then he looked for an opportunity to hand him over.
- 8:12On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the
- 8:17Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, Where do you want us to go and prepare
- 8:23for you to eat the Passover?
- 8:26He sent two of his disciples and said to them, Go into the city,
- 8:31and a man will meet you carrying a jar of water.
- 8:34Follow him. Wherever he enters, say to the master of the house,
- 8:39The teacher says, where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?
- 8:45Then he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready.
- 8:49Make the preparations for us there.
- 8:51The disciples then went off entering the city, and found it just as he had told
- 8:57them, and they prepared the Passover.
- 9:00When it was evening, he came with the twelve, and as they reclined at table
- 9:06and were eating, Jesus said, Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me,
- 9:13one who is eating with me.
- 9:16They began to be distressed, and to say to him one by one, Surely it is not I.
- 9:23He said to them, One of the twelve, the one who dips with me into the dish.
- 9:29For the Son of Man indeed goes as it is written of him.
- 9:32But woe to the man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed.
- 9:36It would be better for that man if he had never been born.
- 9:40While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it,
- 9:46and gave it to them, and said, Take it, this is my body.
- 9:51Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
- 9:58He said to them, This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many.
- 10:04Amen, I say to you, I shall not drink again the fruit of the vine until the
- 10:09day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.
- 10:12Then after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
- 10:17Then Jesus said to them, All of you will have your faith shaken,
- 10:22for it is written, I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be dispersed.
- 10:26But after I have been raised up, I shall go before you to Galilee.
- 10:31Peter said to him, Even though all should have their faith shaken,
- 10:36mine will not be. Thank you.
- 10:39Then Jesus said to him, Amen, I say to you, this very night,
- 10:44before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.
- 10:48But he vehemently replied, Even though I should have to die with you, I will not deny you.
- 10:56And they all spoke similarly.
- 10:59Then they came to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples,
- 11:04Sit here while I pray. He took with him Peter, James, and John,
- 11:10and began to be troubled and distressed.
- 11:14Then he said to them, My soul is sorrowful even to death.
- 11:18Remain here and keep watch.
- 11:21He advanced a little and fell to the ground and prayed that if it were possible,
- 11:28the hour might pass by him.
- 11:30He said, Abba, Father, all things are possible to you.
- 11:36Take this cup away from me, but not what I will, but what you will.
- 11:42When he returned, he found them asleep.
- 11:45He said to Peter, Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour?
- 11:52Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
- 11:59Withdrawing again, he prayed, saying the same thing.
- 12:04Then he turned once more and found them asleep, for they could not keep their
- 12:10eyes open and did not know what to answer him.
- 12:14He returned a third time and said to them, Are you still sleeping and taking your rest?
- 12:21It is enough. The hour has come.
- 12:24Behold, the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners. Get up, let us go.
- 12:31See, my betrayer is at hand. Then, while he was still speaking,
- 12:36Judas, one of the twelve, arrived, accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs,
- 12:43who had come from the chief priests, the scribes and the elders.
- 12:47His betrayer had arranged a signal with them, saying, The man I shall kiss is the one.
- 12:54Arrest him and lead him away securely.
- 12:58He came and immediately went over to him and said, Rabbi. And he kissed him.
- 13:06At this they laid hands on him and arrested him. One of the bystanders drew
- 13:11his sword, struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his ear.
- 13:16Jesus said to them in reply, Have you come out as against a robber,
- 13:21with swords and clubs to seize me?
- 13:24Day after day I was with you teaching in the temple area, yet you did not arrest
- 13:29me, but that the scriptures may be fulfilled.
- 13:32And they all left him and fled.
- 13:36Now a young man followed him, wearing nothing but a linen cloth about his body.
- 13:41They seized him, but he left the cloth behind and ran off naked.
- 13:47They led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests and the elders
- 13:53and the scribes came together.
- 13:55Peter followed him at a distance into the high priest's courtyard and was seated
- 14:02with the guards, warming himself by the fire.
- 14:06The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin.
- 14:10Trying to obtain testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death, but they found none.
- 14:18Many gave false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree.
- 14:24Some took the stand and testified falsely against him,
- 14:29alleging, We heard him say, I will destroy this temple made with hands,
- 14:35and within three days I will build another not made with hands.
- 14:41Even so, their testimony did not agree.
- 14:44The high priest rose before the assembly and questioned Jesus,
- 14:49saying, Have you no answer?
- 14:52Why are these men testifying against you?
- 14:56But he was silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him and
- 15:01said to him, Are you the Christ, the Son, or the Blessed One?
- 15:05Then Jesus answered, I am. And you will see the Son of Man seated at the right
- 15:12hand of the power and coming with the clouds of heaven.
- 15:15At that the high priest tore his garments and said, What further need have we of witnesses?
- 15:23You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?
- 15:27They all condemned him as deserving to die.
- 15:31Some began to spit on him. They blindfolded him and struck him and said to him, Prophesy.
- 15:40And the guards greeted him with blows.
- 15:43While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the high priest's maids came along.
- 15:50Seeing Peter warming himself, she looked intently at him and said,
- 15:56You too were with the Nazarene Jesus. But he denied it, saying...
- 16:03I neither know nor understand what you are talking about.
- 16:07So he went out into the outer court. Then the cock crowed.
- 16:12The maid saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, This man is one of them.
- 16:20Once again, he denied it.
- 16:23A little later, the bystanders said to Peter once more, Surely you are one of
- 16:30them, for you too are a Galilean.
- 16:33He began to curse and to swear, I do not know this man about whom you are talking.
- 16:40And immediately a cock crowed a second time.
- 16:45Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had said to him, Before the cock crows
- 16:52twice, you will deny me three times.
- 16:57He broke down and wept.
- 17:00As soon as morning came, the chief priests with the elders and the scribes,
- 17:06that is, the whole Sanhedrin, held a council.
- 17:10They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.
- 17:17Pilate questioned him. Are you the king of the Jews?
- 17:21He said to them in reply. You say so.
- 17:25The chief priests accused him of many things.
- 17:30Again, Pilate questioned him. Have you no answer? See how many things they accuse you of.
- 17:38Jesus gave him no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.
- 17:43Now on the occasion of the feast, he used to release to them one prisoner whom they requested.
- 17:51A man called Barabbas was then
- 17:54in prison, along with the rebels who had committed murder in a rebellion.
- 18:00The crowd came forward and began to ask him to do for them as he was accustomed.
- 18:08Pilate answered, Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?
- 18:13For he knew that it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed him over.
- 18:19But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead.
- 18:27Pilate again said to them in reply, Then what do you want me to do with the
- 18:33man you call the king of the Jews?
- 18:35They shouted again, Crucify him.
- 18:40Pilate said to them, Why? What evil has he done?
- 18:44Then they all shouted the louder, Crucify him.
- 18:49So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them.
- 18:56And after he had Jesus scourged, handed him over to be crucified.
- 19:02The soldiers led him away inside the palace, that is, the praetorium,
- 19:08and assembled the whole cohort.
- 19:11They clothed him in purple, and weaving a crown of thorns, placed it on him.
- 19:18They began to salute him with, Hail, King of the Jews!
- 19:22And kept striking his head with a reed, and spitting upon him.
- 19:28They knelt before him in homage, and when they had mocked him,
- 19:33they stripped him of the purple cloak, dressed him in his own clothes,
- 19:39and led him out to be crucified.
- 19:42They pressed into service a passer-by, Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in
- 19:49from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.
- 19:55They brought him to the place of Golgotha, which is translated place of the skull.
- 20:02They gave him wine, rubbed with myrrh, but he did not take it.
- 20:08Then they crucified him and divided his garments by casting lots for them to
- 20:14see what each should take.
- 20:17It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him.
- 20:21The inscription of the charge against him read, The King of the Jews.
- 20:28With him they crucified two revolutionaries, one on his right and one on his
- 20:34left those passing by reviled him shaking their heads and saying Thank you.
- 20:42You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
- 20:47save yourself by coming down from the cross.
- 20:51Likewise, the chief priests with the scribes mocked him among themselves and
- 20:59said, He saved others, he cannot save himself.
- 21:03Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross,
- 21:09that we may see and believe. Those who were crucified with him also kept abusing him.
- 21:17At noon, darkness came over the whole land, until three in the afternoon.
- 21:26And at three o'clock, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi,
- 21:34lima sabachthani, which is translated, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
- 21:42Some of the bystanders who heard it said, Look, he is calling Elijah.
- 21:49One of them ran, soaked a sponge with wine, put it on a reed,
- 21:55and gave it to him to drink, saying, Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to take him down.
- 22:02Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.
- 22:07Let us pause in our reading for a few moments of personal prayer.
- 24:03Of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.
- 24:08Then the centurion, who stood facing him, saw how he breathed his last,
- 24:14and said, Truly this man was the Son of God.
- 24:20There were also women looking on from a distance.
- 24:23Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of the younger James,
- 24:30and of Joseph and Salome.
- 24:32These women had followed him when he was in Galilee and ministered to him.
- 24:39There were also many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem.
- 24:44When it was already evening, since it was the day of preparation,
- 24:49the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, a distinguished member of the
- 24:56council, who was himself awaiting the kingdom of God,
- 25:01came and courageously went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
- 25:07Pilate was amazed that he was already dead.
- 25:11He summoned the centurion and asked him if Jesus had already died,
- 25:16and when he learned of it from the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.
- 25:22Having brought a linen cloth
- 25:25he took him down wrapped him
- 25:28in the linen cloth and laid him in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock
- 25:34then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb Mary Magdalene and Mary
- 25:41the mother of Joseph watched where he was laid.
