- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome to Connecting the Dots. I'm Alex.
- 0:18And I'm Morgan. It is Thursday, November 20,
- 0:212025, and we are ready to connect the dots on
- 0:24some of the biggest shifts happening in tech
- 0:26right now. We really are. We're tracking a huge
- 0:29migration of power today from old school media
- 0:32to individual creators and from closed off tech
- 0:36to open systems that finally work together. But
- 0:40first, let's get a quick snapshot of what's happening
- 0:42out there. Here in Sacramento, it looks like
- 0:44we've got showers likely with a high around 55
- 0:46degrees. And on the national front, a heads up
- 0:49for anyone in the southern plains. There's some
- 0:51severe thunderstorms brewing with the risk of
- 0:53flash flooding down in south central Texas. So
- 0:56please be safe out there. Now for a look at the
- 0:58markets. After Wednesday's close, things were,
- 1:01well, pretty calm, actually. Yeah, very stable.
- 1:03The Dow Jones was essentially flat up just 0
- 1:06.09. Barely a blip. The S &P 500 did a little
- 1:09better. It managed to gain about a quarter of
- 1:11a percent. And Bitcoin is still just kind of
- 1:13moving sideways. It's still just a bit over $91
- 1:16,000. All right. Before we jump into our main
- 1:18stories, we want to kick things off by thanking
- 1:20our sponsor, Old Glory. Old Glory is an iconic
- 1:24music and sports fan merch store. And, you know,
- 1:27if you're looking for something for your techie
- 1:29friend for the holidays, this is a great place
- 1:31to look. Absolutely. They've got unique gear
- 1:33that goes way beyond just a basic t -shirt. Right
- 1:36now, you can get 15 % off your entire purchase
- 1:38with the promo code SNARFL. That's S -N -A -R
- 1:41-F -U -L. Just visit oldglory .com to check it
- 1:44all out. OK, let's get into it. We've pulled
- 1:46the top three stories from our SNARFL Tech article
- 1:49report. Our morning star. And this first one
- 1:52is all about where the money is going. And it's
- 1:57not going where it used to. Not at all. The data
- 1:59is pretty staggering. Story number one. The creator
- 2:01economy is officially eating traditional media's
- 2:04ad budgets. I mean, just look at the numbers.
- 2:06Ad spend in the creator ecosystem is on track
- 2:08to hit thirty seven billion dollars in twenty
- 2:11twenty five. Thirty seven billion. Let that sink
- 2:13in. But it's the growth rate that's really the
- 2:15story here, isn't it? It is. That's a 26 percent
- 2:18year over year rise. Now compare that to total
- 2:22media ad spending which is only growing at about
- 2:25five point seven percent So the creator space
- 2:27is growing more than four times faster than the
- 2:29entire rest of the market exactly and this isn't
- 2:32new The spending in this sector has more than
- 2:35doubled since just 2021 This isn't an experiment
- 2:38anymore for brands. No, it's a core strategy.
- 2:41In fact, nearly half of ad spenders, 48%, now
- 2:44call creators a must -buy. A must -buy. That
- 2:47puts them in the same category as paid search
- 2:50and social media advertising. It's a fundamental
- 2:53part of the plan. And we can see where those
- 2:55ad dollars are coming from. They're being pulled
- 2:57directly from legacy formats. Linear TV ad spend
- 3:00is projected to fall by almost 15%. Brands are
- 3:04realizing that creators give them two things
- 3:06they can't get from a TV commercial. Built -in
- 3:09distribution and cultural relevance. Especially
- 3:11with, you know, out of order Gen Z consumers.
- 3:13They just aren't watching cable. Right. So the
- 3:15top campaign goals make sense. It's less about
- 3:18direct sales and more about association. 43 %
- 3:22of brands said their goal was brand awareness.
- 3:25And 41 % said it was about reaching new audiences.
- 3:28Audiences that legacy media, frankly, just can't
- 3:32touch anymore. But here's what I found most fascinating.
- 3:35That $37 billion, it's not all going to the biggest
- 3:39celebrity influencers. No, and that's the key
- 3:42takeaway. It's the rise of the mid -tier creator.
- 3:44The ones with, what, 50 ,000 to half a million
- 3:47followers? Exactly. That group was hired by 61
- 3:50% of brands. They were the most popular segment
- 3:53by far. And the VIPs, the giant celebrities.
- 3:56They were the least popular, only hired by 30
- 3:58% of brands. So why is that? It feels like we're
- 4:00getting back to the original promise of influencer
- 4:03marketing. I think so. The mid -tier creator
- 4:05has that perfect balance. They have enough scale
- 4:08to actually move the needle for a brand. A few
- 4:11hundred thousand followers is a real audience.
- 4:13For sure. But they still have that authentic,
- 4:16close relationship with their followers. They
- 4:18feel genuine. And that's what brands are paying
- 4:21for. It's about audience alignment over just
- 4:23raw numbers. The big challenge, though, is still
- 4:25measurement, right? How do you prove that a campaign
- 4:28actually worked? That is still the big question.
- 4:32Public view counts are one thing, but brands
- 4:34are demanding better tools to measure actual
- 4:36business outcomes. Did we sell more product?
- 4:39And I saw that AI is starting to play a role
- 4:42here, but maybe not in the way people expect.
- 4:44Right. It's not about synthetic AI -generated
- 4:47creators. Not yet, anyway. So it's more of an
- 4:51optimization tool for now. Precisely. Three in
- 4:53four brands are using AI for things like editing
- 4:56content faster, writing creator partnership briefs,
- 5:00or A -B testing different ad copies. It's about
- 5:02making the human -led campaigns more efficient.
- 5:04Speaking of making things more efficient, let's
- 5:06move from the creator economy to the smart home.
- 5:09Yes. Our second story is about fixing what has
- 5:12been, for years, the biggest headache in smart
- 5:14home tech. Anyone who's tried to get a security
- 5:16camera from one brand to work with a smart hub
- 5:19from another brand knows this pain all too well.
- 5:22Oh yeah. Your Google Hub doesn't want to talk
- 5:24to your Apple HomeKit camera? Yeah. It's a mess.
- 5:28Matter was supposed to fix this, but cameras
- 5:30were always the one big exception. Until now.
- 5:34Matter 1 .5 is here, and it finally brings security
- 5:37camera support into the fold. This is a huge
- 5:40deal for user freedom. A matter -certified camera
- 5:42will just work. It'll work with Apple Home, Google
- 5:45Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, all
- 5:49of them. So you can finally mix and match. You're
- 5:51not locked into one brand's ecosystem anymore.
- 5:54Exactly. And these aren't just basic cameras.
- 5:57The standard supports live video, two -way talk,
- 5:59pan -tilt zoom controls, motion detection, all
- 6:02the features you'd actually want. And because
- 6:04Matter runs on your local network, the connection
- 6:06should be faster and more reliable, which is
- 6:08critical for a security feed. Right. And it's
- 6:10not just cameras. Matter 1 .5 is also unifying
- 6:13a bunch of other devices under a new category
- 6:15they're calling closures. Closures. So things
- 6:18that open and close. You got it. Window shades,
- 6:21drapes, garage doors, gates. Before they all
- 6:24used... different clunky standards. Now they're
- 6:27all unified. Which means you can create much
- 6:29smarter automations like getting a notification
- 6:32if you accidentally left the garage door open
- 6:35for more than 10 minutes. Exactly that. It's
- 6:37a real quality of life improvement and for those
- 6:41of us with a shall we say less than green thumb.
- 6:44You're looking at me. They've added support for
- 6:46soil sensors. Okay now I'm listening. It can
- 6:49measure moisture and temperature in your garden
- 6:51or potted plants and then automatically trigger
- 6:54a matter -based water valve, so no more overwatering.
- 6:58That might actually save my houseplants, but
- 7:00the biggest impact here might be in energy management,
- 7:02right? This could actually save people money.
- 7:05A ton of money. This update allows smart devices
- 7:07to pull real -time energy pricing data from your
- 7:10utility. So your smart home knows when electricity
- 7:12is cheapest. Yep, and it can automatically schedule
- 7:15your dishwasher or EV charger to run during those
- 7:18off -peak hours when it costs less. That's how
- 7:21a smart home starts paying for itself. Lower
- 7:23utility bills is definitely a promise everyone
- 7:25can get behind. Which brings us to our final
- 7:29story. We're moving from the smart home to the
- 7:32carrier giants. Specifically Verizon. And this
- 7:36is a really interesting complex situation. Because
- 7:39on the surface, their Q3 results looked pretty
- 7:41good, Rick. Revenue was up to nearly $34 billion.
- 7:44Their broadband business is also booming. They
- 7:47added over 300 ,000 new subscribers, mostly from
- 7:50their fixed wireless service. So if the numbers
- 7:52look Why are we talking about a company in crisis?
- 7:55Because of the core business. Their consumer
- 7:57wireless phone division, the most important part,
- 8:00actually lost 7 ,000 subscribers. Ouch! At the
- 8:03same time T -Mobile is closing in on them. Right.
- 8:06And that pressure led the board to make a huge
- 8:08change. They replaced CEO Hans Vestberg with
- 8:11Dan Schulman, the former CEO of PayPal. But the
- 8:14market reaction was not great. The stock actually
- 8:16fell 5 % on the news. Yeah, a lot of investors'
- 8:19skepticism. Schulman has inherited what is basically
- 8:22a customer loyalty crisis. And to his credit,
- 8:25he didn't sugarcoat it. He came right out and
- 8:27said Verizon, quote, rely too heavily on price
- 8:30increases without adding enough value. That's
- 8:33a huge admission. He's promised a full reboot
- 8:36of the company's culture and cost structure with
- 8:39a new focus on being customer first. But here's
- 8:42the really tricky part. He also said they will
- 8:44not get into a price war. No copycat promotions,
- 8:48no deep discounts to win people back. It's a
- 8:50massive gamble, isn't it? He's betting that Verizon
- 8:53can win by being a premium service, not the cheapest
- 8:56one. It's a tightrope walk. How do you become
- 8:58leaner and scrappier? Which usually means cutting
- 9:01costs like stores and call centers while also
- 9:04delighting your customers. That's the billion
- 9:06dollar question. If you cut support staff, wait
- 9:09times get longer and customers get angry. That's
- 9:11the opposite of delighting them. So they'll almost
- 9:13certainly lean on AI and automation to try and
- 9:16fill that gap. They have to, but that's its own
- 9:18risk. A bad chatbot experience can be even more
- 9:21frustrating than a long wait time. True. So maybe
- 9:24the path forward is to invest in the few flagship
- 9:27stores they keep with better trained staff or
- 9:29maybe bring back a free streaming perk to restore
- 9:32that feeling of premium value. Something to make
- 9:35people feel like, OK, it's a bit more expensive,
- 9:37but it's actually worth it. It is a high stakes
- 9:39pivot. And whether he can pull it off without
- 9:41just cutting prices is going to define Verizon's
- 9:44future. It's going to be a fascinating story
- 9:46to watch. It really is. Now before we wrap up,
- 9:49we want to thank our other sponsor for today,
- 9:51Skony. That's S -K -O -N -I, Skony. They make
- 9:55premium golf shoes and if you're a golfer, you
- 9:58really need to check them out. They are engineered
- 10:00for incredible comfort and stability on the course.

- 10:06entire purchase. Just use the promo code SNARFL
- 10:08at checkout. Visit skony .com and use that code
- 10:12SNARFL. All right, so let's quickly recap the
- 10:14three biggest stories we connected for you today.
- 10:17First, the creator economy is now a $37 billion
- 10:20market and brands are smartly investing in authentic
- 10:24mid -tier creators instead of just giant celebrities.
- 10:28Then we saw Matter 1 .5 finally solve the smart
- 10:32homes camera problem, creating true interoperability
- 10:35while also adding smarts to gardening and energy
- 10:38management. And finally, we broke down the high
- 10:40-risk full reboot at Verizon as its new CEO tries
- 10:43to restore customer value without getting into
- 10:46a price war with competitors. Three huge stories
- 10:49impacting how we consume our media, manage our
- 10:51homes, and connect to the world. So think about
- 10:54this as you go about your day. Which of these
- 10:56shifts, the rise of the creator, the truly unified
- 11:00smart home, or the carrier reboot, do you think
- 11:02will change your daily life the fastest in the
- 11:05coming year? We're here to help at Snarful, so
- 11:07reach out on our website if you have any more
- 11:08questions. That's a wrap on today's top stories.
