- 1:38Speaker 1: it's just a beautiful, uh display of food, people in
- 1:41Speaker 1: their cross sectional people. Uh. Concession stand at the l
- 1:45Speaker 1: A f C Soccer Stadium, a location in Proud Bird
- 1:48Speaker 1: right there at l A been there many times, catering
- 1:50Speaker 1: and a sprawling restaurant and ball called sant Antone by
- 1:55Speaker 1: Blood so BBQ in the crowd Casino and Melbourne him meant,
- 1:59Speaker 1: y'all your born Australia. That's where the International Park comes
- 2:02Speaker 1: from the legend of Blood. So BBQ begins, of course
- 2:05Speaker 1: the counter of Texas. That's right south of Dallas, Texas.
- 2:08Speaker 1: The reason I know. I'm from Houston, Texas, so I

- 2:23Speaker 1: himself was born and raised in Compton, California. That's where
- 2:25Speaker 1: I met him. Now he is a television star. Like

- 2:50Speaker 1: on my show today, my man and Kevin Blood too.
- 2:53Speaker 1: How you doing, sir man? I am good. After that
- 2:56Speaker 1: in the duct interview over, I'm good smiling. Well, I
- 3:02Speaker 1: had to because I see you post let on the
- 3:05Speaker 1: on the on social media. You're gonna be talking to
- 3:06Speaker 1: the legend on Thursday. That's my Let me just let me.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Let me make it perfectly clear. I would not be
- 3:14Speaker 1: doing probably none of this extra stuff if it wasn't
- 3:18Speaker 1: for winning that first Hoodie award. Man, I would never
- 3:21Speaker 1: forget that. I remember talking to you backstage was so
- 3:24Speaker 1: cool and it was like I always knew you and
- 3:28Speaker 1: Steed too, but with me and you holler backstage and man,
- 3:31Speaker 1: you came and gave me the hug. I was like, damn,
- 3:33Speaker 1: have I manhill be false? Just say, man and I
- 3:36Speaker 1: have like and I mean, you told me something that
- 3:39Speaker 1: night and I don't know if you remember, but you
- 3:41Speaker 1: said you're gonna be all right. I always look out
- 3:43Speaker 1: for your folks. You remember you told me that absolutely
- 3:46Speaker 1: absolutely believe that that man. You know, And I just
- 3:50Speaker 1: want to say, Man, I appreciate you. I appreciate everything
- 3:53Speaker 1: you guys have done for me. Man, and I really
- 3:56Speaker 1: really missed the Hoodie Awards. I really do because win
- 3:59Speaker 1: a little it was so much fun. Man. How y'all
- 4:02Speaker 1: take normal folks from the neighborhood and made us feel
- 4:07Speaker 1: incredible every time for those three and Podas Man, I
- 4:10Speaker 1: just always wanted to thank you guys. Man. It was
- 4:12Speaker 1: an incredible time. It was an incredible ride. And even
- 4:15Speaker 1: because I think I went to like sixth straight or
- 4:17Speaker 1: absolutely remember we had those little those little meeting greets
- 4:20Speaker 1: and all that stuff. Remember, yeah, man, the little the
- 4:23Speaker 1: great room in there, because don't forget Kevin, get the
- 4:32Speaker 1: red carpet and to get my first one for what
- 4:35Speaker 1: was Sally Richard and uh Bernie mack and he was
- 4:40Speaker 1: not Bernie mack up George Wallace clowning for thirty minutes
- 4:43Speaker 1: and and my pants falling down and everything and memories, man,
- 4:47Speaker 1: I chaired the Shine real though. You know some I
- 4:51Speaker 1: have the video of of your winn I don't know
- 4:53Speaker 1: if you have that. I'm gonna send it to you.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Please don't show that, man, Please gona send it to you.
- 4:59Speaker 1: I got them all, my got that time history of
- 5:00Speaker 1: the hoodia Wars slash Neighborhood of Wars. I got it.
- 5:03Speaker 1: But but you know something Kevin is is is the
- 5:05Speaker 1: thing about it is that that's what it was all about.
- 5:08Speaker 1: It's always been about the people. It's always recognizing the
- 5:11Speaker 1: regular people, because you know, we get so we get
- 5:14Speaker 1: become like unknown we can we be get burdened, like
- 5:17Speaker 1: we're not even delivering a contributing And that's why I
- 5:20Speaker 1: was telling you about to take care of your people.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Because what we didn't know, you know, Steve Harry Now
- 5:24Speaker 1: didn't know at the time, was that well, you know,
- 5:27Speaker 1: I started this in Houston, Texas in nineteen eighties seven,
- 5:29Speaker 1: just as I was a sidekick on the radio show.
- 5:32Speaker 1: And then what happened when Steve came we got the
- 5:34Speaker 1: radio gig in l A. He said, Rill, Sean, did
- 5:36Speaker 1: you should do that goodie war thing? I think I
- 5:38Speaker 1: have told be big. You know, I would never as
- 5:41Speaker 1: a as an individual, I could never just go to
- 5:43Speaker 1: the radio stage. But Steve was big enough to say,
- 5:45Speaker 1: let's do this, let's do that. I gotta give credit
- 5:48Speaker 1: with credits do and they weren't know and they sold it,
- 5:51Speaker 1: and we sold the idea. We went to Vegas several
- 5:53Speaker 1: times with the Forum several times, and then we went
- 5:57Speaker 1: back to Vegas and so it was what was when
- 6:00Speaker 1: you when you talk about it, you know, because what
- 6:02Speaker 1: I didn't see coming was how it affected the business.
- 6:06Speaker 1: How enabled you can talk about how the Hood Awards
- 6:09Speaker 1: affected you guys with all that promotion, Steve holling it
- 6:12Speaker 1: out on them. Here's the nominees, here's the nominees. Here's
- 6:15Speaker 1: the top four. Here's the top four. Talk about that,
- 6:18Speaker 1: I mean, the pride that it. I mean, it's like
- 6:22Speaker 1: people still to this day just talking about when it
- 6:25Speaker 1: was time to vote, the first vote and the second vote,
- 6:28Speaker 1: and and and how genius it was the way y'all
- 6:30Speaker 1: put that together that had the first vote in the
- 6:33Speaker 1: second vote. But the pride of bringing people together and
- 6:36Speaker 1: people just wanted to be part of that, and then
- 6:39Speaker 1: when you win and and bringing home. Man, it's like
- 6:41Speaker 1: in the neighborhood, it's like, you know, winning the national championship.
- 6:45Speaker 1: You know, everybody want to come, and so many people
- 6:49Speaker 1: would wait to hear if you want. I mean, I mean,
- 6:52Speaker 1: we had customers cry when we lost, you know what
- 6:55Speaker 1: I mean? And uh, it's that I mean because like
- 6:58Speaker 1: I said, you don't have that much Like I said,
- 7:00Speaker 1: you you don't have that many shows that do that. Especially,
- 7:03Speaker 1: I mean, we barely got enough for real celebrities that
- 7:06Speaker 1: they give problems to, so to have you know, the
- 7:09Speaker 1: normal hard work and people trying to run their businesses
- 7:11Speaker 1: and all that doing their thing to getting a ward
- 7:14Speaker 1: and and and like I said, getting the award from
- 7:16Speaker 1: Sally Sally Richards and and and George Wallace and and
- 7:20Speaker 1: the people I met backstage and just the whole thing. Man,
- 7:23Speaker 1: It's incredible, man, I mean, it was a it was
- 7:25Speaker 1: a real beautiful time man. And it's just the pride
- 7:28Speaker 1: that it brings. And then the customers that you get.
- 7:31Speaker 1: If you notice everything that I do, every show that
- 7:34Speaker 1: I say that I do, they say about winning the
- 7:37Speaker 1: Hoodie Award, no matter what they always say in Canada,
- 7:40Speaker 1: Australia and whatever. Like the lady told the body, I said,
- 7:43Speaker 1: it's the hoodie you know all over always get a
- 7:47Speaker 1: problem man, Because like I said, that was just a
- 7:50Speaker 1: real exciting time, man. Was it was real fun, you know.
- 7:53Speaker 1: And and and I thank you, you know, because of
- 7:55Speaker 1: the fact that the whole idea man, was to celebrate
- 7:59Speaker 1: the real stars of the community. That was the basis
- 8:02Speaker 1: of the video Awards in the Neighborhood a Wars. Because
- 8:04Speaker 1: of the fact that and my whole thought was that, Okay,
- 8:06Speaker 1: instead of have the celebrities being recognized for un let's
- 8:10Speaker 1: use the celebrities as almost like props to get people there,
- 8:14Speaker 1: because you know, if we said that we were just
- 8:16Speaker 1: gonna be doing best bybecue best high school, would nobody
- 8:18Speaker 1: show up. But you got Steven Holt, you got the salary,
- 8:21Speaker 1: just just Sali Richardson's on stage, you got the George
- 8:24Speaker 1: Wallace stage, you got Scoop Dog Ice Q showed up
- 8:29Speaker 1: one year, Magic Jonawson showed up. When you get all
- 8:31Speaker 1: these people, people going whoa, whoa, what's going on here?
- 8:34Speaker 1: What's going on here? And then it allows us to
- 8:36Speaker 1: be back like like in the green like before the
- 8:38Speaker 1: Wars and in the green room with him, you know,
- 8:42Speaker 1: having cocktails, but just like and everybody interacting. Man, it
- 8:46Speaker 1: was incredible. And like I said to even the walker
- 8:49Speaker 1: to the not just the red carpet, when we walked
- 8:53Speaker 1: through the casino or whatever, going inside getting ready to
- 8:56Speaker 1: call in and walking inside that arena, man, that was like.
- 8:59Speaker 1: That was that was cool. That was that was a major.
- 9:02Speaker 1: That was that was majing because you know the thing
- 9:04Speaker 1: about it I would not share, No, I was people
- 9:07Speaker 1: come in and go, man, this is produced better than
- 9:08Speaker 1: the Emmies, Dude, this is better than it because I
- 9:12Speaker 1: because I had to do that the worst thing in
- 9:14Speaker 1: the world, man, is for us as black people, you know,
- 9:17Speaker 1: to say you're gonna do something good for us and
- 9:19Speaker 1: then do it half. I didn't do it, slopper, And
- 9:22Speaker 1: that's what that was my greatest love, man, because to
- 9:25Speaker 1: see the look on y'all faces because y'all didn't believe it. Okay,
- 9:28Speaker 1: this was always chipped me out, man. Was those acceptance species.
- 9:31Speaker 1: I wasn't ready for that, Kevin. So I wasn't ready
- 9:33Speaker 1: for because I I told Steve Irris, look, man, I
- 9:36Speaker 1: got the fact we're gonna nominate them. I got the
- 9:38Speaker 1: fact we're gonna vote. Vote. I said, I don't know
- 9:40Speaker 1: what they're gonna say when they get up there. Man.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Y'all got up there, man, and it was like if
- 9:46Speaker 1: they brought me to tears many times, man, because I
- 9:48Speaker 1: didn't realize the impact of a community award. That's what
- 9:53Speaker 1: it was. It was a community award and how it
- 9:56Speaker 1: affected and you know what I because I always like,
- 9:58Speaker 1: you know, because I was reading the guy Steve is
- 10:00Speaker 1: still the start, you know, way back there. But I
- 10:03Speaker 1: could go to a restaurant and I went by your
- 10:05Speaker 1: place one time back in the hood. And then when
- 10:08Speaker 1: and then and then I found out my girl Candy,
- 10:10Speaker 1: who should do my backstage celebrity streaming? She said, Kevin
- 10:17Speaker 1: is on Libraya. I said, he got a spot on Libra.
- 10:22Speaker 1: I didn't even know Kevin. I didn't even know you
- 10:23Speaker 1: had that. She was so candy, so cool after my
- 10:25Speaker 1: baby sister. Now, man, she is so cool, always so professional, man,
- 10:30Speaker 1: and just and incredible, you know. I mean, your whole
- 10:34Speaker 1: staff was just like you know, man, I mean, and
- 10:38Speaker 1: I mean when you guys came out and did the
- 10:40Speaker 1: video of me, uh, and I was still in compliment, man,
- 10:43Speaker 1: And I don't even know what you know. Candy, don't
- 10:46Speaker 1: give no information. You know. I used to find up
- 10:50Speaker 1: to see that. Boy. You think I'm losing my job
- 10:52Speaker 1: over you know that? So she said about the video.
- 10:56Speaker 1: When y'all did the video, she said, well, well, I
- 10:59Speaker 1: don't want to say she like, but she lies, like,
- 11:01Speaker 1: oh we do this with all the contestants. People don't
- 11:03Speaker 1: get on the video. And at the lunch and then
- 11:06Speaker 1: I was on the luncheon. I don't even know until
- 11:07Speaker 1: I got did you know. I mean, everything y'all did
- 11:11Speaker 1: was it was just it was it was for even
- 11:14Speaker 1: like the waiting like like like in that first time.
- 11:17Speaker 1: I mean, I'm I'm nervous. I'm sweating like a brother
- 11:20Speaker 1: of clan with the white woman. You know what. I'm
- 11:22Speaker 1: sweating that nervous. But I said, man, I ain't been
- 11:25Speaker 1: this nervous since football days. And it was just uh
- 11:28Speaker 1: and and I'm not even putting too much on it. Man.
- 11:30Speaker 1: It was other contestants that I met, and then the
- 11:33Speaker 1: friendships the people that I met from other businesses that
- 11:36Speaker 1: we are still good friends to this day. Man. That's
- 11:38Speaker 1: what that's what it's all about. Man. I mean, I
- 11:41Speaker 1: hear like the morning show sometimes and I get nervous
- 11:44Speaker 1: because I remember during the time when it's voting time,
- 11:47Speaker 1: because you know, we are burthen Coast got us about
- 11:50Speaker 1: a few obvious and they don't already started. But I
- 11:52Speaker 1: just remember that one year, it was six forty five,
- 11:55Speaker 1: they was about to go off the air and uh
- 11:58Speaker 1: and it was just correct. Tommy said he was doing
- 12:01Speaker 1: the top three or whatever, the top four, and we
- 12:03Speaker 1: was number three already in time. But Steve said, now
- 12:06Speaker 1: that's now, that don't make no sense. Bless those number
- 12:09Speaker 1: three and number brothers in l A. That's right. So listen,
- 12:12Speaker 1: let me explain to everybody. See what happened was from
- 12:14Speaker 1: two thousand one to two thousand five, we were l
- 12:17Speaker 1: A was l A based radio station. Steve Art name
- 12:20Speaker 1: two three and and Kevin and all everybody was in
- 12:23Speaker 1: other l A. So in two thousand and five were
- 12:25Speaker 1: left and went to New York. Were based in New
- 12:27Speaker 1: York for two years. So for one year we took
- 12:29Speaker 1: a year off. Two thousand and six, we didn't even
- 12:31Speaker 1: do it. We didn't even do it, and we're trying
- 12:33Speaker 1: to figure out what we had to do with our
- 12:35Speaker 1: own career. We were struggling and trying to come up
- 12:37Speaker 1: after that run. And then two thousand seven we brought
- 12:39Speaker 1: it back, and so we're freaking me and Steve I
- 12:42Speaker 1: was like, okay, they in l A and so you know,
- 12:46Speaker 1: you guys, and like you said, y'all were three hours difference,
- 12:50Speaker 1: and y'all were voting. Y'all were seriously voting Kevin. Yeah,
- 12:54Speaker 1: we had him. We had everybody, every old college people, everywhere,
- 12:58Speaker 1: everybody we knew, all over the uh United States. We
- 13:01Speaker 1: had them going. Man. But like I said, and you'd
- 13:03Speaker 1: be surprised. I mean, people still come and tell me
- 13:06Speaker 1: how much they missed that. And I missed those weeks
- 13:10Speaker 1: of the hoodie was and so many people when you win,
- 13:12Speaker 1: it would go and I remember being, you know, like
- 13:15Speaker 1: I said, it's it's starting in l A. You did,
- 13:18Speaker 1: you did, But I remember being and I member, you
- 13:21Speaker 1: know a couple of times bloss was the only one
- 13:23Speaker 1: in I mean one time we were the one. My
- 13:25Speaker 1: first year we wanted and crash shall High wanted and
- 13:28Speaker 1: after that it got so big it was people don't
- 13:31Speaker 1: know how hard it is. You know you're listening to
- 13:35Speaker 1: money making conversations with Rashan McDonald. We'll be right back.

- 14:43Speaker 1: it was like, you know, because you're absolutely right, because
- 14:46Speaker 1: two thousand and seven, two thousand and eight, that's when
- 14:49Speaker 1: you know it became really national because we started out
- 14:52Speaker 1: syndicating to all these walking with New York, Chicago, Philadelphia,
- 14:57Speaker 1: you know, a good Charlotte or Miami, all these different
- 15:01Speaker 1: market dollars and so it wasn't just l A anymore.
- 15:04Speaker 1: That's why I steer trip that you guys were able
- 15:06Speaker 1: to win before it really explode, And when it really explode,
- 15:09Speaker 1: it was like, wow, this is something that was just
- 15:12Speaker 1: a just a cool idea that's become worldwide. But that
- 15:16Speaker 1: but that kind of like prepared you for what you're
- 15:18Speaker 1: doing now. As as as as they said international brand,
- 15:22Speaker 1: talk about the stuff we were talking about. This is
- 15:25Speaker 1: we talked about coming out of Comptom. You know, open
- 15:28Speaker 1: up your shop. You got this beautiful restaurant. I'm gonna
- 15:30Speaker 1: just tell you about the food. Okay, and uh blood
- 15:34Speaker 1: so ball and cute ball and Q that's on Labraya.
- 15:38Speaker 1: I swear to you guys, every time I go to
- 15:40Speaker 1: l A. You know, the COVID has kept me out,
- 15:42Speaker 1: but I will go there. And you know, I'm tell
- 15:44Speaker 1: you I'm gon typing by Candy Candy Candy. She goes
- 15:48Speaker 1: by Kendy Marina because I represent her as an actress
- 15:50Speaker 1: and and uh talk and producer. She took me at
- 15:54Speaker 1: the first time, she said, and then she said, Kevin
- 15:56Speaker 1: said he got you on this with Shan. I said,
- 15:57Speaker 1: you know, I don't like that. I don't like that,
- 16:00Speaker 1: and said I don't like ahead and so and so. So.
- 16:04Speaker 1: You know, every time I go in there, I don't
- 16:05Speaker 1: tell nobody. I don't go I've taken the air Force
- 16:08Speaker 1: in there. Air force in there because I had a
- 16:10Speaker 1: big contract the Air Force. And then I was doing
- 16:12Speaker 1: a base like two hours away and uh and in
- 16:16Speaker 1: the month of March, two hours away, and I told him,
- 16:19Speaker 1: I said, I want you all to go to l
- 16:21Speaker 1: A and Or and get and pick up this barbecue run.
- 16:24Speaker 1: They said, Rushan really Asa yes, blood so or libreya.
- 16:29Speaker 1: I said, the Colin Green's gonna kill you. Then we
- 16:31Speaker 1: mess you up. Now, I said, Colin Queen's gonna mess
- 16:34Speaker 1: you up. And they said when they two hours down
- 16:37Speaker 1: two hours back, was nobody disappointed. They went, Wow, let's
- 16:42Speaker 1: see why you went. That's how powerful I believe in
- 16:45Speaker 1: your brand. That's how good your brand is. Tell everybody
- 16:48Speaker 1: about the menu that you have, the type of food
- 16:50Speaker 1: that you serve on your menu. Kevin, like I always
- 16:53Speaker 1: say that we do it right, low and slow, like
- 16:56Speaker 1: a six vote. You know what I'm saying. Take that
- 16:58Speaker 1: time to brisket is fifteen hours. The ribs it's four
- 17:01Speaker 1: to five hours. You know, we we You know, I'm
- 17:04Speaker 1: a firm believer. It's ain't broke, don't don't fix it.
- 17:06Speaker 1: You know, I still do it the way Willie May
- 17:08Speaker 1: feels you should do it. When I was coming up
- 17:10Speaker 1: spend my summers and of course in Canada, you know,
- 17:12Speaker 1: she would take her time and do it right, you know.
- 17:15Speaker 1: And I just try to I just try to keep
- 17:17Speaker 1: that going at every spot that we got, you know.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Um and like I said, just knowing incredible people like
- 17:24Speaker 1: you and and and and and it's so funny you
- 17:26Speaker 1: bring up because I had a discussion about that with
- 17:28Speaker 1: a younger guy who just opened up a spot, and
- 17:31Speaker 1: he was saying, you know, say, you know, uh, sometimes
- 17:34Speaker 1: celebrities come in and and uh this and that this
- 17:37Speaker 1: and that said, let me just tell you one thing.
- 17:39Speaker 1: I don't care who they are, whatever, whatever, you give
- 17:42Speaker 1: them that option, because celebrities are different. Some of them
- 17:47Speaker 1: are just like you, who's like I want to pay
- 17:49Speaker 1: Some of them don't, you know, but you being you
- 17:52Speaker 1: need you need them more than they need you. And
- 17:56Speaker 1: like on any field, you got cool people and you
- 17:59Speaker 1: got uh, you know, people who are tripping or whatever whatever.
- 18:02Speaker 1: But that's on you to understand that. But a celebrity
- 18:06Speaker 1: coming in there, it's gonna look out for your business.
- 18:09Speaker 1: But you have to respect just like they respect your
- 18:12Speaker 1: work as a chef and they come to your spot,
- 18:14Speaker 1: you have to respect they work. Like these people don't
- 18:16Speaker 1: want to deal with people sometimes, but they take the
- 18:19Speaker 1: time to come come to you and come to your spot,
- 18:21Speaker 1: and sometimes us as business owners have to really quick
- 18:24Speaker 1: speaking on people's pocket books and all that one tweet
- 18:27Speaker 1: or some of the like when you talk about free
- 18:29Speaker 1: advertisement or some of the stuff that you do. I
- 18:32Speaker 1: can never pay for that because I posted every time
- 18:35Speaker 1: I posted a couple of last months and I hadn't
- 18:40Speaker 1: even been there, and I act like I was there. Yeah,
- 18:43Speaker 1: And That's what I'm saying. But I can't. And how
- 18:45Speaker 1: I respect that, And I love that so much. And
- 18:47Speaker 1: I try to tell younger brothers and sisters who open up,
- 18:50Speaker 1: get that mentality. They at the time, they're gonna pay,
- 18:54Speaker 1: but make sure you give them the respect that they deserve,
- 18:58Speaker 1: you know. I mean, we got all huge celebrities coming
- 19:01Speaker 1: there and do the same thing with all of them,
- 19:03Speaker 1: all of them. You know, I'm not gonna drop no names,
- 19:06Speaker 1: but I'm coming about foods. You know. Some of the
- 19:09Speaker 1: best artists we ever had too, from the Titanic and
- 19:11Speaker 1: everything come in that spot and they all look out.
- 19:14Speaker 1: But you better give them, you know, take care of man,
- 19:16Speaker 1: because these people are gonna do. You need that. It
- 19:18Speaker 1: wasn't for that and the Hoodie Awards and getting to
- 19:22Speaker 1: know that. I mean, there was so many celebrities that
- 19:24Speaker 1: come to the Hoodie Awards that came to the restaurant
- 19:26Speaker 1: after word, I gotta come see what this is about.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely, and that's that's called community. But the thing
- 19:31Speaker 1: about it, let me just tell you, I'm telling some
- 19:33Speaker 1: real talk here. Every time I've been I've been there
- 19:36Speaker 1: over a dozen times. Okay, I brought people with me.
- 19:39Speaker 1: I went in there by myself and just got the
- 19:41Speaker 1: vegetable spread. Because when you get the vegetable spread and
- 19:44Speaker 1: the me, it's just too much. And I'm always traveling
- 19:46Speaker 1: and I don't really I'm in a hotel, so I
- 19:48Speaker 1: can't do it to go okay, And so so sometimes
- 19:51Speaker 1: I come in there and give me some corn bread
- 19:53Speaker 1: and then I give me the the you know, some
- 19:54Speaker 1: colar greens, some beans, and and so I just break
- 19:57Speaker 1: it up like that. Or sometimes you come in and
- 19:59Speaker 1: get me a sandwich. And but every time I go
- 20:01Speaker 1: in there, the service is always on point. Kevin. The
- 20:06Speaker 1: meal looks exactly the same of quality separation, I mean, picture,
- 20:12Speaker 1: I take pictures of your food, and then people do
- 20:16Speaker 1: people go okay, looking like that. I said all the time,
- 20:18Speaker 1: all the time. I remember when I brought the National
- 20:21Speaker 1: Guarden there. You know, we was we were standing way
- 20:24Speaker 1: in Long Beach for for conference. I said, they said,
- 20:28Speaker 1: it's what we're gonna eat. I said, we're going to
- 20:30Speaker 1: uh bloodsoe bar and Q it's where it's l A.
- 20:34Speaker 1: He said, all we on that. I said, yes, We're
- 20:36Speaker 1: gonna go over there, went up in there. Man, they
- 20:39Speaker 1: went wow after because because the beauty about the beat,
- 20:42Speaker 1: the thing about coming to this place, like when you
- 20:44Speaker 1: get your meal, you get that double meat, triple mea
- 20:46Speaker 1: the order. Because I'm a kind of guy man, people,
- 20:49Speaker 1: I was saying, man, you're small. You know that food. Hey,
- 20:52Speaker 1: stay off my plate, Stay off my plate. Stay we
- 20:59Speaker 1: need we need to. And so what happens when you
- 21:01Speaker 1: have by five people at the table okay, and all
- 21:05Speaker 1: that food come to the table. You get attention man,
- 21:08Speaker 1: because it looks so beautiful because every one of the
- 21:11Speaker 1: plates is look immaculate as far as we won'ta say
- 21:14Speaker 1: you work is immaculate. Everything's nothing running off the sides,
- 21:18Speaker 1: nothing too small. The portions are good. That's why I
- 21:21Speaker 1: just love what I what I eat. That's why when
- 21:24Speaker 1: I kind of sneak in because Chang. I'm gonna tell Kevin,
- 21:27Speaker 1: you know, you ain't what problem problem because it's about
- 21:31Speaker 1: of respect. That's why I started the Hoodie Awards, man,
- 21:33Speaker 1: because it's about showing love. Man. The fact that you guys,
- 21:36Speaker 1: you still believe in it just excites me even more. Man.
- 21:39Speaker 1: And and and the fact that the fact that you
- 21:42Speaker 1: you're doing so well and you your TV so talk
- 21:45Speaker 1: about how did the television stuff start for you? And
- 21:48Speaker 1: how would you how would you were you nervous? Did
- 21:50Speaker 1: you know? What? Did you? Did you play it off?
- 21:52Speaker 1: How did it all kick off for you? Kevin? What
- 21:55Speaker 1: my first one? And it's so funny, my niece, because
- 21:58Speaker 1: I'm I'm just like, shoot, this is maybe two thousand ten, Kevin.
- 22:02Speaker 1: I'm uh, I'm still knee deep in the compter location.
- 22:07Speaker 1: So uh uh. This producer called and said, hey, we
- 22:11Speaker 1: really want to get you know, Kevin Bluss. He happened
- 22:13Speaker 1: to be at the restaurant. I didn't know who he was,
- 22:15Speaker 1: you know, in the restaurant, in the kitchen, we clowned
- 22:17Speaker 1: in the back, We clowned and cracked jokes in bag.
- 22:20Speaker 1: So the dude heard me back there clowning. So I've
- 22:22Speaker 1: never even seen it, didn't know who he was, and uh,
- 22:26Speaker 1: he kept calling and he kept always he got my
- 22:28Speaker 1: niece itself on him met his calls and she's like, um,
- 22:30Speaker 1: this guy wants you for for a TV show. And
- 22:33Speaker 1: I was like what TV show? Bar Rescue? And I
- 22:35Speaker 1: never heard of it, you know, never heard of the show.
- 22:37Speaker 1: And that just and that he kept calling, and then
- 22:39Speaker 1: one day she said, look, this dude need a video.
- 22:41Speaker 1: We're gonna go to your house and do this video.
- 22:43Speaker 1: So we we went to the house and started the
- 22:45Speaker 1: video of just you know, me interviewing and whatever whatever.
- 22:48Speaker 1: But before the thing was even set up, it's me
- 22:51Speaker 1: cussing her out and like, God, I ain't got my time.
- 22:53Speaker 1: She's my name. Who he's throwing souls is and this man.
- 22:56Speaker 1: So when she sent it, she sent the whole thing
- 22:58Speaker 1: and John Taffery's seen anything. Now, I gotta have this dude,
- 23:02Speaker 1: I gotta have the bam bam bam. Uh and I
- 23:05Speaker 1: got into funny story. I'm gonna keep the shore. But
- 23:07Speaker 1: for my first episode was in Kansas City. Uh, I
- 23:11Speaker 1: think it was called Boondocks or whatever. The show never
- 23:15Speaker 1: was supposed to air because so we saved this boar.
- 23:19Speaker 1: I'm thinking this dude is. That's when I learned to
- 23:21Speaker 1: between like, oh southern racist are Southern rocker? This dude
- 23:25Speaker 1: was a Southern rocket. We we actually are good friends
- 23:27Speaker 1: now and you know Southern rocket they like rapp and
- 23:29Speaker 1: country and on thinking he was a racist. But anyway,
- 23:33Speaker 1: we get into it on the show. I'm like, you know,
- 23:35Speaker 1: I'm gonna put hands on this food and all on
- 23:38Speaker 1: the show. But he didn't have no reverse. He didn't
- 23:41Speaker 1: have no reverse, so he wasn't no pump you know
- 23:42Speaker 1: what I mean. I'm gonna get, I'm gonna get you
- 23:46Speaker 1: are you gonna get? But anyway, so it's so crazy,
- 23:48Speaker 1: So it takes about a couple of months for them
- 23:50Speaker 1: to do it. So the night before the show was
- 23:52Speaker 1: supposed to hear, which was Thanksgiving weekend that year, I
- 23:54Speaker 1: can't think of in that the exact year, he was
- 23:57Speaker 1: having a party at his bar and got I was
- 24:00Speaker 1: smoking a big time country singer at his bar and
- 24:02Speaker 1: they got into it, had a fight to do kind
- 24:04Speaker 1: of got the best and Chris Chris Shotton killed them
- 24:08Speaker 1: the night before the show was supposed to so they
- 24:11Speaker 1: had to pull up the show. But the show accidentally
- 24:14Speaker 1: aired on the replay later on that night. And it's
- 24:17Speaker 1: a big old thing and all that, but I'm saying,
- 24:19Speaker 1: I'm getting into this food. This food go to. He
- 24:21Speaker 1: could have went to the back and out of gun
- 24:22Speaker 1: on me, you know, but that was my first episode,
- 24:26Speaker 1: my first job. Then John Tapper is like huge in
- 24:31Speaker 1: my life, like you guys. So, I mean, this dude
- 24:33Speaker 1: is as far as business and bars and the things
- 24:37Speaker 1: that he knows. And like I said, the teen episodes later, Man,
- 24:41Speaker 1: he keeps me busy. In fact, he called me the
- 24:43Speaker 1: other day to congratulate me because the Netflix show is
- 24:45Speaker 1: doing so good. Number one after last week is the
- 24:48Speaker 1: number one unscripted show on Netflix and it's doing well. Man.
- 24:53Speaker 1: First of all, that we're talking about the American Barbecue showdown, okay,
- 24:57Speaker 1: and they got some characters on there. And your girl
- 25:00Speaker 1: up from Mississippi. She's the real deal who cooks the
- 25:04Speaker 1: whole hall. Did you know ever? Photo show are just
- 25:07Speaker 1: new off I knew ever. If I knew ever, that
- 25:10Speaker 1: was our first time meeting. And uh, she's incredible. I
- 25:13Speaker 1: mean she's a legend. She's a legend, and uh, and
- 25:16Speaker 1: you'd be surprised some of those Cooks to be first time.
- 25:18Speaker 1: I mean, they did such a good job of getting
- 25:21Speaker 1: that cast together. I mean, we're hoping for a season two,
- 25:24Speaker 1: but you've got some of the producers might not even
- 25:25Speaker 1: want to do a season two because he said, some
- 25:28Speaker 1: things just need to be left untouching. To get that
- 25:30Speaker 1: the cast of uh, the pit masses that they had,
- 25:33Speaker 1: and the attitudes and the personalities, it's hard to you
- 25:37Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, it's hard to strike gold twice,
- 25:39Speaker 1: you know, and you're part of well, you know you,
- 25:43Speaker 1: I know you'll be back because it's part of your brain,
- 25:45Speaker 1: it's part of you. It's just part of what you do.
- 25:47Speaker 1: That that like, you know, when I put the press
- 25:50Speaker 1: relead that police out, you know, they said, I said
- 25:52Speaker 1: with Kevin's name first, Kevin Bloss's name first on the
- 25:54Speaker 1: press release. That press release was reached a hundred million people. Wow.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Picked when you start talking about audience picked up our
- 26:04Speaker 1: different websites and they started putting that numbing together a
- 26:06Speaker 1: hundred million people. And that's what relationships do, Kevin. And
- 26:10Speaker 1: that's what you're talking about this whole conversation is that
- 26:13Speaker 1: you respect the process, you understand the process. Just drop
- 26:17Speaker 1: just drop some jewels on people about the value of relationships, Kevin.
- 26:22Speaker 1: I mean, it's like I said when you when you
- 26:23Speaker 1: say look at look out, I would not be here
- 26:26Speaker 1: if it wasn't for people looking out for me. And
- 26:28Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. I always say, uh, Russia's uh.
- 26:33Speaker 1: I don't give to be blessed. I'm blessed, so I
- 26:35Speaker 1: give you know, it's not no secret recipe that this
- 26:38Speaker 1: you know, it has to come from your heart. Like
- 26:41Speaker 1: I try to tell people, love to to talk about
- 26:43Speaker 1: all the funerals and stuff we paid for um, you
- 26:48Speaker 1: know with blood cells. Okay, let's also talk about the
- 26:51Speaker 1: scholarships and how many kids we put through college to
- 26:55Speaker 1: more of the good things that outweigh the bad things.
- 26:58Speaker 1: And God has put me in position to help like that.
- 27:01Speaker 1: And that's what I'm saying, and and it it it
- 27:03Speaker 1: comes that, That's what it's It's like, it's so weird,
- 27:06Speaker 1: it's just And I try to tell people it has
- 27:09Speaker 1: to come from your heart and it's natural. The blessing
- 27:11Speaker 1: is gonna keep ringing in if you do what you're
- 27:12Speaker 1: posted to do. And how was you raised? You was
- 27:15Speaker 1: raised to give you know me us as black posting.
- 27:18Speaker 1: I mean, you know, coming up, what we had, all
- 27:20Speaker 1: we had was food and and love and hugs and
- 27:23Speaker 1: all that, and like we gotta we gotta go back
- 27:25Speaker 1: to that, man, we gotta we gotta go back to that.
- 27:28Speaker 1: And you gotta want to put the work in. It's
- 27:29Speaker 1: hard work. Like people want to get a business. I know,
- 27:32Speaker 1: you know, a business is gonna be the hardest job
- 27:34Speaker 1: you ever had in your life. Right and if you
- 27:37Speaker 1: don't have that mint that's why everybody can't do with
- 27:39Speaker 1: a business is gonna be the hardest job in your
- 27:42Speaker 1: I mean, I said it due something. I want to
- 27:44Speaker 1: be like you. I want to you know, be able
- 27:45Speaker 1: to live in Texas and this and not this and that.
- 27:47Speaker 1: I said, okay, well you ready to go eight years
- 27:49Speaker 1: without off day? You know what I mean, I'm gonna
- 27:56Speaker 1: post that all the motivational card, Kevin, don't put that
- 27:58Speaker 1: on my way. Are you ready to give eight years
- 28:01Speaker 1: date when open up? Let me tell you when I
- 28:05Speaker 1: first opened up blood Shoes, I was still d Jane,
- 28:09Speaker 1: so I would have I would I would get to
- 28:11Speaker 1: blood Tows at uh four o'clock on a Saturday morning
- 28:15Speaker 1: and uh be there until seven o'clock. Home at night,
- 28:21Speaker 1: go home, take a shower, pack my gig up, and
- 28:23Speaker 1: go do a DJ gig. Get back about two three
- 28:27Speaker 1: in the morning, take a shower, and go up to
- 28:31Speaker 1: blood shows to take briskuts off and get ready for
- 28:32Speaker 1: the day. Two hours straight. And that went on for
- 28:36Speaker 1: the first almost year and a half of my business
- 28:38Speaker 1: because I was at one time, I was just DJ
- 28:40Speaker 1: and and catering. So I was bucked, you know, But
- 28:44Speaker 1: I had to do what I had to do. I mean,
- 28:45Speaker 1: my daughter wrote wanted to car wish I had it.
- 28:47Speaker 1: She said, my daddy, if you knew the work my daddy,
- 28:50Speaker 1: it was called my Daddy's not overnight success. My daddy
- 28:52Speaker 1: would come in at three in the morning. I would
- 28:54Speaker 1: just hope my father got at least one hour of sleep,
- 28:57Speaker 1: and I know he didn't. My Daddy's not an overnight success.
- 29:00Speaker 1: And they got to know everybody's path. It's not gonna
- 29:02Speaker 1: be that way, you know, but it's tough, especially when
- 29:04Speaker 1: you and I would and I know you know, when
- 29:06Speaker 1: you know money making conversations. I would tell anybody, if
- 29:09Speaker 1: you can, please have the money and the backing to start,
- 29:14Speaker 1: because when you start on a shoestring budget, that's why
- 29:16Speaker 1: a lot of them don't make it because you need that.
- 29:18Speaker 1: And us as a community, that's why we need our
- 29:21Speaker 1: own banks and we need because we can't these younger
- 29:23Speaker 1: they can't get the loans. You know. They want you
- 29:25Speaker 1: to to be experienced to get a small business man
- 29:28Speaker 1: a loan. But you you need the small business man
- 29:30Speaker 1: only get going, you know, and they and they and
- 29:33Speaker 1: they have to understand that. Then as you grow, get
- 29:36Speaker 1: get you know, get with a good team. I have
- 29:37Speaker 1: a good team behind me. There's no way I could
- 29:40Speaker 1: do what I'm doing if I didn't have the team
- 29:44Speaker 1: that uh I have working you know with with you know,
- 29:47Speaker 1: the blood shows, LLC. The people that we have, the
- 29:49Speaker 1: things that have been done, the doors that have opened,
- 29:52Speaker 1: to get tied straight, to get on the bread, to
- 29:55Speaker 1: get in those conversations that we need to be in
- 29:58Speaker 1: so we can have a voice, you know. And that's
- 30:01Speaker 1: the whole thing. You have to have a good team, man,
- 30:03Speaker 1: And then you got to trust the team. You might
- 30:04Speaker 1: be the quarterback, but you need some good receivers, line,
- 30:08Speaker 1: running backs, coaches, you know, on the sidelines, cheering your
- 30:12Speaker 1: own cheerleaders, all that stuff, man. And more importantly, you
- 30:16Speaker 1: need fans in the stands. That's called customers people and
- 30:20Speaker 1: how you keep them by putting out a good product. Absolutely, Kevin,
- 30:24Speaker 1: I just want to thank you, man, and uh look,
- 30:27Speaker 1: don't hang up, come and wrap up this show. I
- 30:28Speaker 1: want to get the number and so we can stay
- 30:30Speaker 1: in touch. But uh, I just love you, man, I
- 30:33Speaker 1: just love you, man. Man, I got so much love
- 30:36Speaker 1: and respect for you. Bro, it's like it's it's unwavery
- 30:39Speaker 1: man real talk. You know, because of the fact that
- 30:42Speaker 1: I know where you came from. I know, I know,
- 30:45Speaker 1: and I know that what I've been doing all my
- 30:47Speaker 1: life and two people, I've been doing this since all
- 30:49Speaker 1: the eighteen years old. For some reason, God just just
- 30:51Speaker 1: said this is what you do. You uplift people. You
- 30:54Speaker 1: you don't somebody's behind you. You don't run off and
- 30:56Speaker 1: leave them. You extend their own or our hand. And
- 30:59Speaker 1: that's where the Neighborhood Awards and that's what the Hoodie
- 31:01Speaker 1: Awards was. And to see you have such a reaction
- 31:04Speaker 1: in it, and there's a lot of people like that. Man.
- 31:06Speaker 1: I'll be in DC. People to come on that you
- 31:08Speaker 1: ain't gonna bring it back, Come on that stop. I'm
- 31:12Speaker 1: talking about barber shops I'm talking about high school churches, Detroit, Atlanta,
- 31:18Speaker 1: all over this country. Stopped me for real, man, for real,
- 31:22Speaker 1: I said, look, thinking about it. Well, we're thinking about it, man,
- 31:25Speaker 1: I got something else, Gona, we're gonna jump off. But
- 31:27Speaker 1: we're talking about her brother because I understand exactly what's
- 31:30Speaker 1: going off, what's going on in life, and I know
- 31:33Speaker 1: its need, especially during these times or the pandemic and
- 31:36Speaker 1: black unrest, because you know, somebody messed up with this
- 31:39Speaker 1: pregnantlated to date, had their knee on her, the police,
- 31:43Speaker 1: and that it's not gonna stop, man. And we gotta
- 31:45Speaker 1: go out there and vote. We gotta register the vote.
- 31:48Speaker 1: And I'm voting in person, my friend, I am voting
- 31:51Speaker 1: in person. I'm not messing around with no mail in ballot.
- 31:54Speaker 1: I'm not messing around with that. I wanted somebody to go,
- 31:56Speaker 1: here's your card. Sure you've officially voted, because I want
- 31:58Speaker 1: to people understand that if you want something to life,
- 32:01Speaker 1: no matter what it is, a business, you want to graduate,
- 32:03Speaker 1: you want to be in a relationship for a long time,
- 32:05Speaker 1: it's hard work. It's hard work, and voting it is hard.
- 32:09Speaker 1: If he got stand in that line, if it's raining,
- 32:11Speaker 1: if it's storming standing that line, because if I don't
- 32:14Speaker 1: make a change, it's gonna be uh four more years
- 32:18Speaker 1: of a life that would never be good, especially for
- 32:21Speaker 1: people you aren't making it. And I'm just talking about
- 32:23Speaker 1: you know, we we we've crossed a little line there, Kevin.
- 32:25Speaker 1: We could survive the ignorance. I'm not. But again, if
- 32:29Speaker 1: I'm making it and my people ain't making it, then
- 32:31Speaker 1: I'm not making That's right. You ain't making it, because
- 32:34Speaker 1: that's that's that's a burden, you know. And I always
- 32:36Speaker 1: take you too, And I know we're wrapping. But it
- 32:39Speaker 1: wasn't that long ago when we talk about standing the lines.
- 32:42Speaker 1: I meant my son was at a play football at
- 32:44Speaker 1: Utah and he called me one day and he was
- 32:47Speaker 1: just upset and he was like that he was wing
- 32:49Speaker 1: a sixty five. I said, yeah, Mark. He said, the
- 32:51Speaker 1: Voters Act was made uh June or whatever six, So yeah,
- 32:55Speaker 1: whatever was he said, So when you was born, black
- 32:58Speaker 1: people couldn't vote. So he said, my granting them couldn't vote?
- 33:01Speaker 1: I said no, And if if it hit home with him,
- 33:04Speaker 1: like he knows people, he couldn't believe that he knew
- 33:08Speaker 1: black people that couldn't vote at the time. And if
- 33:11Speaker 1: people don't think certain things can happen again. Like I
- 33:13Speaker 1: tell people all the time, I'm not a conspiracy theorist,
- 33:16Speaker 1: theory of sporist or whatever I said. But when they came,
- 33:19Speaker 1: when got the brothers from Africa for slavery, said they
- 33:23Speaker 1: were living normal life, normal life. I said, please look
- 33:27Speaker 1: at the big picture on everything. Please look at people
- 33:31Speaker 1: trying to line up with with Russia and things like that.
- 33:35Speaker 1: Just always look at the big picture, man, and get
- 33:37Speaker 1: out there and vote. Man, it's just this. I never
- 33:39Speaker 1: thought we would be to this time again, and we are.
- 33:42Speaker 1: And if this don't bring us all together, and like
- 33:44Speaker 1: I said, you can't say certain things aren't different, because
- 33:48Speaker 1: I mean, I was in l A for the ninety
- 33:49Speaker 1: two rides. You know what I mean. You brothers and
- 33:52Speaker 1: Hispanics out there, But now look at who's out there now.
- 33:55Speaker 1: It's white, black, Hispanic together. And like I said, maybe
- 33:59Speaker 1: not in a lifetime, but I feel like once you
- 34:02Speaker 1: have kids, ain't it's about maybe in a lifetime and
- 34:04Speaker 1: a lifetime after that, racism might not exist no more,
- 34:07Speaker 1: you know what I mean. And that's what I try
- 34:09Speaker 1: to work towards. Man. But we gotta do it. You know, Yes, Kevin,
- 34:14Speaker 1: I would appreciate you coming on money making conversations with
- 34:17Speaker 1: a two time I said two times Steve Harvey Hoody

- 35:00Speaker 1: check in with Dr Denay Simpson, Assistant Professor of Surgery
- 35:03Speaker 1: at Northwestern Medicine. Tell us about the African American Transplant
- 35:07Speaker 1: Access Program. So this is my baby. This is a
- 35:10Speaker 1: program that I have dreamt about creating since I became
- 35:14Speaker 1: interested in transplant as a trainee, and it's a program
- 35:17Speaker 1: designed to address the significant disparities that are African American
- 35:24Speaker 1: Patients Space. The program is designed to educate patients about transplant,
- 35:30Speaker 1: let them know what transplant can provide to them, and
- 35:33Speaker 1: to help them access the resources that they find so
- 35:38Speaker 1: scarce and so challenging to access in order to get
- 35:41Speaker 1: them on the transplant path and back to you know,
- 35:45Speaker 1: some type of meaningful life. For more information, visit n

- 36:08Speaker 1: rights attorney Ben Crump. The police for justice is simply
- 36:11Speaker 1: this Crump said. Dr Martin Luther King said, he who
- 36:15Speaker 1: passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as
- 36:19Speaker 1: he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil
- 36:22Speaker 1: what our protesting is really like cooperating with it? It
- 36:26Speaker 1: truly is an epidemic of how they are destroying the
- 36:30Speaker 1: lives of so many young people of color, whether they're
- 36:34Speaker 1: killing us for bullets or whether they're killing us with
- 36:37Speaker 1: the laws. We're trying to make be an education for
- 36:40Speaker 1: young people, but also for white people who want them
- 36:44Speaker 1: to understand. Look at what you're doing to our future.
- 36:47Speaker 1: I don't want you to speculate and say, oh, we
- 36:50Speaker 1: never knew. You can't say we didn't know. The question
- 36:53Speaker 1: is what are you gonna do about it after you
- 36:55Speaker 1: have the knowledge. The Cafe Morka Swag Award represents men

- 37:28Speaker 1: names comes from an intersection that was formerly the center
- 37:31Speaker 1: of a notorious crime ready neighborhood in Virginia and reason.
- 37:35Speaker 1: In recent years, the neighborhood has been completely revitalized and
- 37:38Speaker 1: those same families now have the opportunity to own a
- 37:41Speaker 1: place where the dark past now has a bright future.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Talian Twine represents the future. It's not about how you start,
- 37:48Speaker 1: is about how you finish. Please welcome to money making Conversations.
- 37:51Speaker 1: The Owner, Founder, CEO, all the titles to go with
- 37:55Speaker 1: the leader of the pack, my man, Randy Williams, thank
- 37:59Speaker 1: you so much for having me great intro. Well you
- 38:03Speaker 1: submit that that you got Stephen A. Smith doing your intro.
- 38:06Speaker 1: That's legendary. Man. I love that. Hey man, the first
- 38:09Speaker 1: of all, I love when people recognize his voice. That's
- 38:14Speaker 1: my man, man, and he lays it as only Stephen A.
- 38:17Speaker 1: Smith concern I'm not broke, that's true. Well, this is
- 38:22Speaker 1: just what this show is about, talking to people who
- 38:24Speaker 1: are trying to gain their footh haul and in the
- 38:27Speaker 1: financial community, especially people of color. They have kind of
- 38:30Speaker 1: like been left out over the years. We haven't been
- 38:32Speaker 1: giving a blueprint or had the necessary means to figure
- 38:36Speaker 1: out figured out. You know, they tell us to go
- 38:37Speaker 1: to school, we get an education, but that that'sn't a
- 38:40Speaker 1: blueprint for success. That's to tell you how to become
- 38:42Speaker 1: an entrepreneur. Tell us how I got started for you, Randy,
- 38:47Speaker 1: a lot of trial and error and you know, like
- 38:50Speaker 1: you said, there isn't a blueprint. But if you want
- 38:52Speaker 1: to become an entrepreneur, you gotta go out and try
- 38:54Speaker 1: a few different things and kind of learned along the way.
- 38:58Speaker 1: So you know, fail feel that business a lot, and
- 39:01Speaker 1: all you need to be right is one time, right now,
- 39:05Speaker 1: be right now. You're an HBCU. Grat Okay, Why why
- 39:09Speaker 1: an HBCU for your education? Yeah, well it's not a
- 39:14Speaker 1: deep answer for me. They're the ones who accepted me.
- 39:16Speaker 1: You know, it was close to the whole. It was affordable.
- 39:21Speaker 1: You know, as a as a young man being raised
- 39:23Speaker 1: by my grandmother, we can't have a whole lot of
- 39:26Speaker 1: money saved up for me to attend college. So I
- 39:29Speaker 1: was less enough to have a decent g p A.
- 39:31Speaker 1: And you get in the Albany State University man, so
- 39:33Speaker 1: I had to. Um. I was thankful for that opportunity.
- 39:36Speaker 1: It gave me a great cultural experience, you know. Um
- 39:40Speaker 1: I actually didn't recognize the value of hbc US until
- 39:42Speaker 1: I attended one man. But it was a great experience.
- 39:45Speaker 1: When you said the value, what does that mean when
- 39:47Speaker 1: it's the value of an HBCU until you attended it.
- 39:50Speaker 1: So basically, like I said, they let you in, you
- 39:54Speaker 1: were thankful, you can continue education, but you usually understand
- 39:58Speaker 1: the other things that it brought to the table able
- 40:00Speaker 1: that now you see as a benefit. Yeah, it was
- 40:03Speaker 1: a huge cultural experience. You know, it's a celebration of blackness,
- 40:08Speaker 1: and it's an environment where instructors and professors make you
- 40:12Speaker 1: feel seen, and that's something that's missing in corporate America.
- 40:15Speaker 1: It's they're kind of like UM an incubator, Like they
- 40:18Speaker 1: have business incubators for businesses that kind of give you
- 40:21Speaker 1: a great push to start. That's what it does for
- 40:24Speaker 1: Black American man HBCU as an incubator to prepare you
- 40:28Speaker 1: for the corporate environment that you're gonna face after graduation.
- 40:31Speaker 1: And now that's called life after college, which we were
- 40:33Speaker 1: talking about now now and one of your questions that said,
- 40:36Speaker 1: you had previous businesses that have failed. Can you talk
- 40:39Speaker 1: about those before we got into the success story of
- 40:41Speaker 1: Italian Twine? Yeah? Sure, Um. The biggest failure I had,
- 40:47Speaker 1: I guess in terms of money was you know, trying
- 40:50Speaker 1: to get into real estate and right at two thousand
- 40:52Speaker 1: seven and two thousand eight, UM and right where you
- 40:56Speaker 1: are in Atlanta and losing my shirt. You know. So
- 41:00Speaker 1: that was one of the biggest lessons, is you know,
- 41:02Speaker 1: hopping into stuff without taking the time to properly educate
- 41:05Speaker 1: yourself on how to do it. So basically you saw
- 41:08Speaker 1: an opportunity, didn't do your research like you said, and
- 41:13Speaker 1: that that that famous year two thousand and eight, and
- 41:16Speaker 1: when everything went from success to horror, I mean from
- 41:19Speaker 1: a nightmare was find Nobody could explain it because they
- 41:23Speaker 1: had already the system had already had kind of like
- 41:26Speaker 1: pushed this limit on loans, pushed this limit on corporations
- 41:30Speaker 1: and needed bailout, and the stock market was the bubble burst,
- 41:33Speaker 1: and you part of that. I was part of America,
- 41:37Speaker 1: was part of that. Nobody was left, you know, you
- 41:39Speaker 1: were by Oprah. However, value just dropped and all these
- 41:43Speaker 1: major players in the tech game started suffering, and all
- 41:47Speaker 1: that those those levels of income that they thought were
- 41:50Speaker 1: gonna be there forever went away went away. Tally Entwine, Now,
- 41:54Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you this, We're not not trying to
- 41:56Speaker 1: be negative or anything. I just I and Wining watches
- 42:00Speaker 1: it all I had in my mind. Um, I just
- 42:05Speaker 1: didn't wear I watched. I stopped warting to watch, probably
- 42:08Speaker 1: about inighties six, I stopped wearing to watch and uh,
- 42:13Speaker 1: and then um because somebodw I can always find the time.
- 42:16Speaker 1: You know, you have a phones, you have I'm very
- 42:18Speaker 1: good at knowing my time where I'm at, And so
- 42:21Speaker 1: that's where I would perceived watches to be time. Now.
- 42:24Speaker 1: I look at watches now as accessories, as as part
- 42:28Speaker 1: of the as part of your style, part of my
- 42:31Speaker 1: culture now. And so a friend of mine, uh, she
- 42:34Speaker 1: executive producer a family few, as a birthday president, president,
- 42:41Speaker 1: she Christmas friends. He brought me a watch and I
- 42:44Speaker 1: let it sat there that I was determined just to
- 42:46Speaker 1: hold true to Rushan. I'm not gonna wear watching I
- 42:49Speaker 1: bought all these years watching I wear watching that, and
- 42:51Speaker 1: I and I and I realized that sometimes you have
- 42:54Speaker 1: you have to change goals to be successful, you have
- 42:56Speaker 1: to change your the way you do business. And putting
- 43:00Speaker 1: on that watch really changed the way I I did
- 43:03Speaker 1: business and how I approached myself became more flexible. And
- 43:07Speaker 1: so I I used that as a as a lead
- 43:09Speaker 1: into the conversation that sometimes people who might say, what
- 43:13Speaker 1: does the watch bringing to the why I did the
- 43:14Speaker 1: where I watched where a watch changed the way I
- 43:16Speaker 1: approach life, Randy, and and if it allowed me to
- 43:22Speaker 1: be flexible, it allowed me to be fashionable because I
- 43:26Speaker 1: got like three different ones, you know, and I've just
- 43:28Speaker 1: found about your brand. So I'm out to perch me
- 43:29Speaker 1: a couple of your brand. That's how I've gotten that.
- 43:31Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. And uh and so so
- 43:35Speaker 1: let's talk about you. You've heard my story and how
- 43:37Speaker 1: the impact of who the watch can have. It made me. Uh,
- 43:42Speaker 1: I felt it made me made me because I wear
- 43:44Speaker 1: suits all the times. Tailor made suits, so it made
- 43:47Speaker 1: my my my my clothing balanced. I felt because I
- 43:50Speaker 1: didn't have anything, because if you don't have anything on
- 43:52Speaker 1: your wrist, it's just naked there. It's just it's just
- 43:55Speaker 1: it's just skin. Now I have this watch, and I
- 43:58Speaker 1: can't tell you. Sometimes your people see me as I
- 44:00Speaker 1: I like your watch, and I don't even know because
- 44:02Speaker 1: I because I'm a guy who pointed out them. Very
- 44:04Speaker 1: active with my hands and then on my other I'm
- 44:08Speaker 1: a cancer survivor. So I have this little chain on
- 44:10Speaker 1: my right hand, on my right hand where reminds me
- 44:13Speaker 1: and asked me about it. I always tell them about surviving.
- 44:16Speaker 1: And so I have a watch that is on my
- 44:19Speaker 1: left which talks about my culture, my balance, and my
- 44:22Speaker 1: watching them all right, I got a risk chain that
- 44:25Speaker 1: talks about survival. And so when I when I, when I,
- 44:28Speaker 1: when the opportunity came about to interview you, I just
- 44:31Speaker 1: really wanted to know what was the driving legacy of
- 44:35Speaker 1: watches for you and the unpacking can have them a
- 44:38Speaker 1: person like me. Yeah, most of our customers have that
- 44:43Speaker 1: same story as you have. Somebody got it for him
- 44:45Speaker 1: gifts as a gift and they weren't really into him,
- 44:48Speaker 1: but once they started wearing, it's kind of one of
- 44:49Speaker 1: those things where you feel like, man, I don't want
- 44:52Speaker 1: to go out without one now. And my personal story
- 44:54Speaker 1: is during our senior trip in high school when on
- 44:58Speaker 1: the cruise went to the Bahamas, I went in to
- 45:01Speaker 1: one of these little local shops and they had a
- 45:05Speaker 1: fifty dollar guests watching there and I had never won
- 45:08Speaker 1: a watch before, but buying that, I spent my last
- 45:12Speaker 1: little money that I had. I bought that watch and
- 45:15Speaker 1: to bring it back home. That was the first time
- 45:16Speaker 1: I felt like a grown man, you know. I felt
- 45:19Speaker 1: like I have become a man and now I can
- 45:22Speaker 1: go on to college and face the world. And that
- 45:25Speaker 1: kind of was coinciding with me going to college. At
- 45:28Speaker 1: the same time I got my first watch, and so
- 45:31Speaker 1: that it became important to me for that reason, you know.
- 45:34Speaker 1: So again, just like you, I was a business major
- 45:37Speaker 1: and we wore a lot of suits, and I felt
- 45:40Speaker 1: like that watch really in hand that and gave me
- 45:42Speaker 1: that professional polish that I was looking for. And um,
- 45:48Speaker 1: how did you get in the watch business? You know,
- 45:50Speaker 1: like I said, you know people couldn't You know that
- 45:52Speaker 1: doesn't the first African American? Okay, and you you're getting
- 45:56Speaker 1: into the watch business and talk about that step because
- 46:00Speaker 1: of course, you know, it's this natural conversation to you.
- 46:02Speaker 1: We're all money making conversations. So I'm trying to walk
- 46:06Speaker 1: people through the steps of how you can get to
- 46:08Speaker 1: your dream. And it's not normal because you just can't
- 46:12Speaker 1: go to the next door and just talk to somebody.
- 46:13Speaker 1: I want to store. I want to get in to
- 46:15Speaker 1: watch it. They look at you like, Okay, now you
- 46:17Speaker 1: talk about the Bahama trip. Okay, that's a long ways
- 46:20Speaker 1: from what We're a long ways from Bahamas. Because of
- 46:22Speaker 1: the fact that you know Italian and Twine we talked
- 46:25Speaker 1: about how that is from from a street name in
- 46:28Speaker 1: the neighborhood, Like my business is thirty and fifteen media,
- 46:31Speaker 1: thirty and fifteen media. The number thirty fifteen is from
- 46:34Speaker 1: the home that I was born in that was in
- 46:37Speaker 1: the hood and uh and it was six bed room.
- 46:40Speaker 1: It was will six bear was six, six sisters and
- 46:43Speaker 1: two brothers. My both my parents who lived in a
- 46:45Speaker 1: two bedrooms shotgun house. So when I read that, Tali
- 46:48Speaker 1: and Trying, it's a lot of thing that you're doing
- 46:51Speaker 1: in your life that's very relatable to what I do
- 46:53Speaker 1: and what I what I stand for. And that's why
- 46:55Speaker 1: I feel that I always want to keep you in
- 46:57Speaker 1: my life because I feel that we have a certain kinship.
- 47:01Speaker 1: But again, you young man, wanted to do go into
- 47:04Speaker 1: the watch business. How does one get into the watch business? Yeah?
- 47:08Speaker 1: Through um so, through a lot of trial and error
- 47:11Speaker 1: and other businesses. You realize that in order for a
- 47:14Speaker 1: business to be successful, you have to fulfill a need,
- 47:17Speaker 1: fulfill a gap. So there's something missing or there's a
- 47:20Speaker 1: market that's not being served that could benefit from what
- 47:23Speaker 1: you have to offer. And so, as a consumer of watches,
- 47:26Speaker 1: and I think a lot of our people should really
- 47:28Speaker 1: take note of that is a lot of things that
- 47:30Speaker 1: you consume um represent an opportunity for you. And so
- 47:35Speaker 1: I was collecting a lot of watches, but I figured
- 47:37Speaker 1: out something. Most of the brands that were affordable, meaning
- 47:41Speaker 1: under a thousand dollars, they were just mimicking the more
- 47:45Speaker 1: expensive brand. So it was a lot of repetition in
- 47:49Speaker 1: the market. And I wanted to wear something different, you know,
- 47:53Speaker 1: I said, if I had a watch, I would change this,
- 47:55Speaker 1: I would change that, my band would look like this.
- 47:57Speaker 1: And after while, I realized that that represented a huge,
- 48:00Speaker 1: huge opportunity for me to get into business and designed
- 48:04Speaker 1: my own watch. Now how I was gonna do that,
- 48:05Speaker 1: I had no idea, and so that's when I went
- 48:08Speaker 1: to YouTube and Google university and kind of figure out
- 48:11Speaker 1: the steps to step by step. I started with a
- 48:13Speaker 1: sketch and then I eventually contacted the manufacturer. UH. They
- 48:18Speaker 1: helped me bring that to life, order some samples, and
- 48:21Speaker 1: once I got the samples the way that I wanted them,
- 48:24Speaker 1: you know, over the course of about a year year
- 48:26Speaker 1: and a half, that's when I decided to launch, and
- 48:29Speaker 1: we launched via the crowdfunding site kickstarter to raise money
- 48:33Speaker 1: for our first shipment. So you went out there. I've
- 48:37Speaker 1: heard people say Kickstarted, what what engaged people want to
- 48:41Speaker 1: contribute to your brain? What did you do? What was it?
- 48:44Speaker 1: What was your platform? What was your what made them
- 48:47Speaker 1: want to go, wow, I want to I want to
- 48:48Speaker 1: contribute to this. And how does kick started work when
- 48:51Speaker 1: someone contributes to it? Do they are they part owners?
- 48:54Speaker 1: They have a little percentage of your brand? How does
- 48:55Speaker 1: that work? M um? Well, my platform was just what
- 49:00Speaker 1: I told you, So here's something new for the market.
- 49:03Speaker 1: Here's something that is not going to be a replica
- 49:07Speaker 1: of all the other watches that are out. So that
- 49:09Speaker 1: was my main platform. And then also I started with
- 49:12Speaker 1: the interchangeable band, so I have these canvas bands that
- 49:17Speaker 1: we can change. You can give your watching completely different looks.
- 49:20Speaker 1: So those are my two platforms. And then the way
- 49:23Speaker 1: kicks Started works is it's basically a pre order system.
- 49:28Speaker 1: So in order to get your products early, people will
- 49:33Speaker 1: pay um ahead of time and they will get a
- 49:36Speaker 1: discount off of the retail price. Right, So let's say
- 49:40Speaker 1: my goal was to raise and so I knew I
- 49:44Speaker 1: needed I think maybe a hundred and hundred and fifty
- 49:47Speaker 1: backers to pre order the Watch, who believe in what
- 49:50Speaker 1: we were doing, who believed that we would be able
- 49:52Speaker 1: to get the main manufacturing process done to go ahead
- 49:55Speaker 1: and pre order and an exchange. They were able to
- 49:57Speaker 1: get a steep discount off of the initial watch. But no,
- 50:00Speaker 1: they are not part owners, so they just they basically
- 50:03Speaker 1: we just ordered their product at a discount. Yes, sir,
- 50:07Speaker 1: Some crowd fund the platforms at work like that where
- 50:10Speaker 1: you do get ownership. But I didn't do that. Absolutely,
- 50:12Speaker 1: you didn't thankful for it, aren't you? You know, because
- 50:21Speaker 1: we all have dreams. The thing about when the dream
- 50:24Speaker 1: that comes successful and then people look around tapping you
- 50:27Speaker 1: on the show talking about what my chick it's about
- 50:30Speaker 1: a hundred and fifty of them? Ready, that that gets
- 50:32Speaker 1: pretty hugly real fast man, Well hundred, I'm talking about
- 50:35Speaker 1: where my check at. You know. Look, man, look, let
- 50:38Speaker 1: me give you back your two dollars. Okay, you can
- 50:42Speaker 1: go about your business all right? Sorry, no, no, no,
- 50:45Speaker 1: that's not what my contracts say. My contracts saying I
- 50:48Speaker 1: owned some of this and I want my share. Man.
- 50:51Speaker 1: You be here for screaming up and down now when
- 50:53Speaker 1: I'm looking at these bands. Man, you know, because on
- 50:56Speaker 1: your site right, and the different look it's what you know,
- 51:01Speaker 1: the large face is, they're very clean. Your you're watches,
- 51:06Speaker 1: uh don't have numbers on them? Was what that was?
- 51:10Speaker 1: That the look that you were seeking. Yeah, that's the
- 51:13Speaker 1: look that I was seeking, because again, I wanted to
- 51:15Speaker 1: do something that wasn't traditional. And you said it earlier.
- 51:18Speaker 1: We don't really use our watches for telling time now.
- 51:21Speaker 1: It's more of a fast accessor, and so I wanted
- 51:23Speaker 1: to give it a unique look. So we only have
- 51:26Speaker 1: the number seven on all of our watching and why
- 51:30Speaker 1: is that? Well, the number seven represents completion. So I
- 51:34Speaker 1: told myself when I started talenting Twine, I was gonna
- 51:37Speaker 1: finish what I started. You know, you know a lot
- 51:39Speaker 1: of times as entrepreneurs we started stuff and thinking of stuff.
- 51:44Speaker 1: Don't I love you boy? I number seven? You know,
- 51:47Speaker 1: you know seven days in the week. You know what
- 51:49Speaker 1: I'm saying, You gotta complete your prod. That's right. And
- 51:53Speaker 1: then there's also something very recognizable. Man. I imagine people
- 51:56Speaker 1: being out in the store looking over at somebody's wrists
- 51:59Speaker 1: and seeing that up and say, hey, is that a
- 52:01Speaker 1: talious one? You're listening to money making conversations with Rashan

- 53:07Speaker 1: money making conversations. I'm your host, Sean McDonald, so you know,
- 53:12Speaker 1: or they go why just or creature conversation, you know,
- 53:17Speaker 1: or as a conversation exactly what type of watching? Because
- 53:20Speaker 1: that in the end, man, that's really all you're trying
- 53:22Speaker 1: to create. Like I said, you know, people try to
- 53:25Speaker 1: create ice breakers. And first of all, it's a beautiful watch,
- 53:28Speaker 1: and then that number seven on it. You know, if
- 53:31Speaker 1: somebody is is just or seven, then you explain it.
- 53:33Speaker 1: Then you get to a conversation with somebody and now
- 53:35Speaker 1: all of a sudden there's a great ice breaker. But
- 53:37Speaker 1: the but the look in the fashion is really so
- 53:41Speaker 1: this is really I think a very timely watch. So
- 53:45Speaker 1: what with the official launch date for this watch, Randy,
- 53:49Speaker 1: We launched in November two thousand, November, right before Christmas,
- 53:54Speaker 1: smart move, right before christ Okay, so everything's online, correct, Yes, sir?
- 54:01Speaker 1: We sell directed consumer. Um, we don't do any retail
- 54:06Speaker 1: right now. Okay. So COVID hit, the pandemic hits, the
- 54:11Speaker 1: country shuts down. What does that do for your brain?
- 54:16Speaker 1: We saw increase in sales, you know, because people were
- 54:18Speaker 1: at home. Um, and unfortunately the social unrest also added
- 54:23Speaker 1: a boost to our business. You know, as people begin
- 54:25Speaker 1: to seek out black owned businesses, you know, so you know,
- 54:28Speaker 1: it kind of validated my thinking from the beginning was that,
- 54:31Speaker 1: you know, eventually traditional retails gonna continue to continue to
- 54:35Speaker 1: slow down and people are gonna want to owner their
- 54:36Speaker 1: products online. They're not gonna want to put up with
- 54:39Speaker 1: the higher prices at retail, They're not gonna put up
- 54:42Speaker 1: with the bad customer service. They get a retail um
- 54:45Speaker 1: and so I kind of pushed all my chip to
- 54:48Speaker 1: the table to be saying that we're gonna do directly
- 54:50Speaker 1: consumer and sell online only. We actually turned out so
- 54:53Speaker 1: some major contracts from some traditional retailers to keep our
- 54:57Speaker 1: brand intact. When you say that, what do you mean
- 54:59Speaker 1: you you to keep your brand intact? What does that mean? Yeah? Meaning, um,
- 55:05Speaker 1: let's say we we got a um A purchase order
- 55:09Speaker 1: from from North from Fly and we chose not to
- 55:12Speaker 1: do it. Because when you shop at North from your
- 55:16Speaker 1: northroom's customer, they control the social they control the customer service.
- 55:20Speaker 1: They can talk to you how they want to, they
- 55:22Speaker 1: can ship in whatever time frame they want to, and
- 55:25Speaker 1: ultimately you become their customer. As a direct and consumer business,
- 55:29Speaker 1: you maintain the connection with all of your customers. So
- 55:33Speaker 1: I can say, hey, Mr Williams, thank you for your
- 55:35Speaker 1: purchase last month. You want to know if you'll be
- 55:37Speaker 1: interested in one of our leather bands to accompany the
- 55:41Speaker 1: watch that you purchase, or I can send you a
- 55:43Speaker 1: card on your birthday, or I can send you a
- 55:45Speaker 1: free gift in the mail prior to the holidays. And ultimately,
- 55:50Speaker 1: the value in today's market is having that customer base.
- 55:54Speaker 1: There's no need to give it away to somebody just
- 55:56Speaker 1: because you know their name and they've been around for
- 55:59Speaker 1: a while, because you're ultimately providing the value. Wow, I'm
- 56:02Speaker 1: talking to Randy Williams. He's the president of Italian Twine, accompaniate,
- 56:06Speaker 1: the designs and manufacturer luxury watches and accessories. He started
- 56:10Speaker 1: November fourteen. And you're really good at getting UM media
- 56:15Speaker 1: to look at your brand. How you're accomplishing that task,
- 56:18Speaker 1: because that's the number one talk that people talk a
- 56:20Speaker 1: he man, I I can I get promotion I can
- 56:22Speaker 1: get from I can get all the cole written on
- 56:24Speaker 1: my product. First of all, out to have a good
- 56:26Speaker 1: looking product. But you're you when I look when I
- 56:29Speaker 1: when I'm doing this interview, you have a very interesting
- 56:32Speaker 1: personality with interesting meaning is good because you have a plan,
- 56:36Speaker 1: you have a conversation. You know, you're you have all
- 56:39Speaker 1: the right things to say about who you are and
- 56:42Speaker 1: why you're doing this. You know, like that number seven
- 56:45Speaker 1: is really slick. You know, interchangeable watches, you know. I
- 56:48Speaker 1: know when I was marketing Steve Harvey's first book, they
- 56:51Speaker 1: always put out a little phrases out of the book
- 56:54Speaker 1: so you can when you go to an interview. These
- 56:57Speaker 1: are buzzwords and people jump on them. So what is
- 57:00Speaker 1: your degree in randy market My degree is that marketing.
- 57:04Speaker 1: So all listen, this is all part of the big plan. Really,
- 57:08Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. Part of the big plan
- 57:10Speaker 1: it because everything you do is like not I won't
- 57:14Speaker 1: say marketing one on one, but guess what. You have
- 57:16Speaker 1: all the right little layers and buzzes and statements to
- 57:20Speaker 1: be able to say, I'm an interesting guy. You can
- 57:22Speaker 1: put me on TV, I can talk if you write
- 57:25Speaker 1: about me. Guess where I got stuff to put in print?
- 57:27Speaker 1: And it all comes back to a product that looks outstanding. Man,
- 57:32Speaker 1: Thank you man. I'll tell you what, Sean, it's like this, Um,
- 57:35Speaker 1: I think I like it to I attributed to self awareness.
- 57:40Speaker 1: So it's just like when you go from being a
- 57:42Speaker 1: young man to an older man, you understand who you
- 57:44Speaker 1: are more and you understand why you're doing what you're doing.
- 57:47Speaker 1: You're not just doing something to make money or you're
- 57:49Speaker 1: not just doing something for attention. And I wanted Italians
- 57:53Speaker 1: wanting to be a brand like that that understood it,
- 57:55Speaker 1: so that had these principles and these values that were
- 57:58Speaker 1: built into the brand, and we weren't kind of following
- 58:01Speaker 1: the trends and following was popular. And so that's how
- 58:04Speaker 1: I think about it. And to answer your question about
- 58:06Speaker 1: how we got the media, I have no idea. We
- 58:10Speaker 1: have never had a pr agency. We don't reach out
- 58:12Speaker 1: to media outlets. Somehow we get UH coverage and I
- 58:16Speaker 1: just consider it a blessing. I just say that that's
- 58:19Speaker 1: God's grace. And I really don't have a strategy for
- 58:22Speaker 1: that one. But I go to the website. I see everybody,
- 58:26Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. I see I see the strategy.
- 58:30Speaker 1: You know, from the marketing standpoint, I see Men's Health,
- 58:33Speaker 1: Black Enterprise, he poses Plavity, Mashable. They not New York
- 58:38Speaker 1: cost Bottom Ebony. That right there. Let everybody know, we'll
- 58:42Speaker 1: brand is being recognized by all the top media outlets.
- 58:46Speaker 1: That means that you are you're very much aware of
- 58:48Speaker 1: who you are and the story you're trying to tell.
- 58:50Speaker 1: Now you have a men's line and you have a
- 58:52Speaker 1: women's line. Okay, I'm assuming you started with the men's
- 58:55Speaker 1: line first. Correct, Yes, sir? When did you get smart?
- 59:00Speaker 1: Got to bring it on the women because they're the
- 59:01Speaker 1: one they're they're the ones who really they're the ones
- 59:04Speaker 1: who buy two or three things. You know, they got
- 59:06Speaker 1: a dress for this, they got a dressed for that.
- 59:08Speaker 1: You know when when when did that pop up? Realize
- 59:11Speaker 1: that the women? I'm assuming that the women are the
- 59:12Speaker 1: biggest buyers. Correct, it's about yeah, so, which which I
- 59:19Speaker 1: like because that means that you have a pretty much established,
- 59:22Speaker 1: especially on the men's side, a certain dollar value customer. Yeah, yeah,
- 59:28Speaker 1: I would say so. I think two years in I started,
- 59:33Speaker 1: I couldn't resist it anymore because I wanted tally trying
- 59:35Speaker 1: to be men's brand, because that's who I knew how
- 59:39Speaker 1: to market too. I was so afraid of trying to
- 59:41Speaker 1: market the women. I didn't want to mess up in
- 59:44Speaker 1: the way that I was communicating with them. But after
- 59:47Speaker 1: a while, man, after get email and email and call
- 59:50Speaker 1: and call, it was women buying gifts for men as
- 59:54Speaker 1: much as there were men shopping on our site, and
- 59:57Speaker 1: so it just represented a no brain I mean, the
- 59:59Speaker 1: people actor and they wanted, uh, a watch that match
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: their husbands. They wanted to give set and so I
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: just kind of took that feedback and you know, I
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: had to slap myself against the head. It's like, what
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: are you doing? You know, why aren't you selling women's
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: watching or so we rolled that out and you know,
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: it instantly wasn't hit. And what I love about having
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: female customers is when they love a product, they are
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: going to talk about it, They're going to discuss it,
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: they're going to share it. And that's really one of
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: the things that has allowed us to grow. You know.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: The thing that I really like about what I'm seeing
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: here in on your line is that, man, these watches
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: look sexy. Man, you know, because you know, I I
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: here's a guy like I said, what intoen I put
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: a watch back on my body, okay, And so I'm
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: watching these watches. Man. You who's ever taking these photos? Man?
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: They really know how to make these watches look man,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: I want that to watch with my risk. Man, I
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: mean these are I mean, these are some attractive looking
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: photos that look so are you involved in the selection,
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: you know, like when looking for Let's go back when
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: you have had this Playball magazine? You know he went
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: through all the pictures, He's made all final selection on
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: the photos that went on into the magazine. How involved
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: in you? Because I'm just telling you, man, this is
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: the These these photos with the watch, it almost like, Man,
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: I can put that watch on my all right there
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: with that shirt. I put that watch with my blue suit.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: This is what you're selling. You're selling is not. I
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: don't need to see the full body. I just need
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: to see high looks on my wrist. And that's what
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: you're doing. Somewhere along the line, Randy, You've tapped into something, man,
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: And uh and I'm just trying to m and this.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: I know it's I know over time I figured out.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: But his interview. You're special, dude, You're special and understanding
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: what excites people. What what You're making a watch value
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: to me? You're making me want to buy your watch
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: when I go through this website. You're making me want
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: to like, not just one watch, I want to try
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: a couple of them, you know, two or three, because
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: you know black goes are black or gray, brown goes blue.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: You know browns can go with great. So you can't
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: just put a watch on with everything. I've learned that
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: you know you when you have a value customer, Like
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: I said, you go in my house. I got like
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: four or five watches because I got my silver, my platinum,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: because different suits I put on, I have to look
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: a certain way. Now. My two favorite colors are my
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: black and my brown wrist bands. But one of the
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: big sellers for your watches that you can interchange bands, correct, yes, sir, yes, sir.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: So let's go back to the selection of these photos
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: and start. I forgot about that. No, I didn't forget
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: about that. How did these pictures get on your website?
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: Because they are they're like making me want to like
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: put out my American Express to start dying. And right now,
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: I mean, you're making me sick right now, Randy, I'm
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: telling you, man, brother, I got I will be buying
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: a couple of these watches. Brother. Well, it's a it's
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: an important part of the process. So like you know,
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: you're like custom suits and you go in and you
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: get greeted by someone. They measure you, they ask you questions,
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: they find out about just a really personal experience. And
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: so as an online business, we don't have that person
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: to person touchpoint. So we have to try to make
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: the website as attractive as possible so that people can
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: understand the real value of the watch that they're going
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: to be getting. So we try to photograph it from
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: all angles. We try to photograph have photographs of people
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: wearing it in their element so that we can really
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: tell that story without having that one on one contact.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: So that's one of the hurdles that we have to
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: get open. So that means our website has got to
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: be ten times better and more attractive than it would
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: be if you had that in story experience. So yeah,
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: I'm really involved there today with the marketing and the
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: photography and video selection, and I really enjoyed that part
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: of my busines the business. It is actually my favorite part,
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: absolutely absolutely. So what is the warranty I buy to watch?
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: You know a couple of watches that I really like,
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: the sold sold out, the ALREADYO top of so what
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: just just what do you select to watch? What's the
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: window and what's the warranty on your watches. We have
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: a two year warranty on our watches to the big
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: thing happens, get it, get replaced, which is unprecedented in
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: our pride. That's incredible. Two years year warranted. And also
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: you can return a product and definitely you know, if
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: you got it and you haven't used it, as long
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: as something used, will always be able to refund you
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: or exchange it for you. So we have a very
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: generous return policy because we really believe in our product.
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: Now this this this black metal band, the one that
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: sold out, you know, of course it will be you know,
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: you know I would pick the one that sold out,
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: you know, crazy like that that that charcoal band on it.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: That's cold right there, man. I just love the women,
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: the women lines, man, I love that that that that
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: pink band, that blue band. Man, you know you you're
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: just making a killing of that pink watch right here. Man,
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: the pink leather band. That's outstanding. There's a pre order
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: shipping by octob wards. That mean pre order shipping by
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: October fifteen. The roles go, what does that mean? When
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: I see that? Well, um, we were expecting to be
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: a hundred percent improvement over what we did last year
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: in terms of sale. But somewhere in the first three
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: months of the year, we that catapulted over year and
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: uh we sold out everything man, so um, we had
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: to start making them available for pre order. UM. So
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: we'll be shipping those pre orders are actually within the
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: next couple of weeks, UM, and then after that hopefully
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: we can have them stopped and we'll be shipping directly
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: from the site. We know on this shipping two to
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: three business days. But you know, the man has been
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: so strong this year that we've had to switch over
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: the pre orders. Well, Randy, all I gotta say, man,
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: all right, if you don't mind, I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: put you in my news letter goes out there thousand subscribers. Okay,
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: I'm gonna put you on my shopping thank You uh,
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: which is on my Money Making Conversation and also on
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: my um Money Making Conversation as well as on my
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: um my HBCU Awards UH website that just launched this month.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: And my whole thing is that you have a great business.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: I am a customer and you my name will pop
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: up on your site as a as a buyer because
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: of the fact that, uh, you're special, man, not just
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: a just special from a standpoint of the product. But
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: if you have unique qualities and a unique understanding of
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: how you want to be viewed, It's not about to check.
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: It's about the brand. I always tell people, always tell
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: people this. You know, I don't really chase money. I
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: changed relationships and I changed and I control my brand.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: And if you do all those things, then you will
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: make money and you'll be able to control your destiny
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: and your future. But if you start giving away your
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: brand for a check, then gets what you have to
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: cater to them. And you're absolutely right. It's like it's
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: like I always always go back to what I's to
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: do with uh with with Krispy Kreme. Krispy Kreme, man,
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: when that little sign came home, you stopped and you
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: had best hot Donna in the world. Then they start
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: going in the grocery stores, they start going to stops,
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: and you crat that doing up Cole was hard. And
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: that's what you're saying about Norstrom. I don't want anybody
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: to market my brand along with a lot of other
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: watches and make it competitive and telling you this is
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: this and this does this come to me. I'm gonna
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: give you two years. I'm give you loyalty, I'm gonna respect,
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: and I'm gonna tell you the truth about my product.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: And that's what you're doing on Italian Twine. I respect
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: that and I love you for a brother. Thank you,
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: thank you man, Thank you for the kind words. I
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: appreciate you. No, no, we were looking at kind words.
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: I gotta start marketing. I gotta jump up there. I
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: want my little money making conversation go up there with
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: a huff Post and uh ebond and you know what
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: I gotta do that. I gotta I gotta get up there.
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: Man talent, come on. But thank you for taking the
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: time to come on this show. And I appreciate you
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: man and uh mad respect and I will always and
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: like I said, everything I do on money making conversations,
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: there's no check attached to it. It's about promoting positive
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: individuals who are trying to make are different. Because you
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: you create taxes, you create employment, you can an opportunity
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: to make this country a lot better. That's what entrepreneurs do.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: And I just want to recognize you for your efforts. Man,
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: Thank you, and I love what you're doing. Man, keep
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: up the work. I know it's hard working it into
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: your schedule, man, but we really need to continue. So thanks.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: I appreciate all Right. There. You want to hear more

- 1:08:37Speaker 1: nonprofit organization for women empowerment, and co owner of Get
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: Well Urgent Care medical Facility. Come from a poverty, strict
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: and neighborhood and have an escaped the statistics, Howardton has
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: found her purpose and passion, which is encouraging others and
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: helping tom to reach their fullest potential and cheering them
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: on to the finish line. Please walk on to Money
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: Making Conversation. Rhodisha Howardton's good morning, good morning, thank you,
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: thank you, thank you so much. Well. First of all,
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: you know when I when I hear the word thank
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: you for coming on the show Money Making Conversation. Uh.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: I appreciate all guests who will take the time to
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: deliver nuggets or inspirational information or define information that you
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: can use to make themselves successful. Because I have women
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: dominate my listenership by sixty percent of my audience women. Uh,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: eight percent of my audience is under the age of
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: forty four, and so that means that they have an
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: entrepreneurial mindset and they want to they want to be
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: information that will help them win. Why did you look?
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: I mentioned three organizations in your credit Let's start out
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: with credit Medics in the in the middle of pandemic
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: and financial Uh, the average person financial sitter rich, is
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: in disarray. Does credit Medics help them or can be
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: a role to play? They try to get them through this?
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: Uh these difficult times. Well, absolutely, before the pandemic we
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: have we have really changed thousands and thousands of our
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: clients lives by just educating them or financial literacy. You'll
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: be surprised. You know, I come from you know, an
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: urban community, and you'd be surprised how many of us
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: are never taught about credit. America has ran on credit
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: and at these times, you you literally can use credit
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: to survive, you know, if you got laid off, if
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: you know they cut back when your hours. There are
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: lines of credit that you would have access to if
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: you were able to qualify for these lines of credit.
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: You could use these lines of credit to survive until
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: your income picks stack up and the bates have given
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: me personally, on my on my personal line, I have
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: twenty five thousand dollars um as the next on my
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: line personally, and I have a few of those. So
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: if I was to fall on hard times, that could
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: carry me until I can figure it out, until I
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: create could create another strain line and income or just
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: to be able to survive. So credit is super duper
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: important to be able to leverage, to be able to leverage,
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: not just even during these times, you know, to be
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: able to leverage to create generational wealth for you and
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: your children. So it's very important and credit metics has
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: assisted thousands and thousands of clients. I'm talking about home ownership,
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: I'm talking about personal credit. I'm talking about business credit.
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: I'm talking about establishing new businesses. I'm talking about expansion.
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: All of that we know. Thank you for the energy
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: and thank you for the points um about credit and
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: about your credit score. When need credit? When did that?
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: When I in your bio. Can you when when I
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: when I read the statement poverty stricten neighborhood, what is that?
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: What is that type of environment? And how long did
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: you live in that? And how did that motivate you
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: to who you are today? That coming in and being
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: raised in that type of environment. So honestly, when I
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: say poverty stritching, I was raising what we were called
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: the hood. You know, a lot of inner city urban
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: can n of these are you know, cause the hood
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: we're living in poverty, very low income, you know, lack
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: of education, A lot of the things that I have
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: seen I should not have seen as a child. But
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: I never used that as a crutch. I never used
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: that as um a source of discouragement for me. I
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: used that as encouragement for me. I used that as
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: an example of I did not want to be like that,
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: and I knew as a child. UM. The fortunate part
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: of my childhood was I was able to travel a
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: lot and my my dad who raised me because I
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: was raising a single parent household and usually you hear
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: you know the mother was a single mind, but it
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: was my dad and we didn't have a lot of money.
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: But my dad saw the importance of connecting us with
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: people who could offer resources that he could not. So
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: we traveled a lot, and me being able to travel
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: outside of that environment, I was able to see that, Hey,
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: life is bigger than this. Life is bigger than living
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: in poverty and being content with being poor and not
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: being able to have access the resources and not being
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: able to live a great life growing up. Excuse my friend,
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: I saw a lot of rich white people on TV.
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: But when I begin to travel, I saw that white
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: people weren't the only people that were able to be successful.
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: Black people could be too. So that for me was
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: the eye opener, and that for me challenged me to
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: think bigger. You know, um, first of all, what you're
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: sending is absolutely correct, is about getting out and seeing
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: a bigger world because when you re reports and I
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: I've been able to do a lot of social work
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: and a lot of environmental My minor is in sociology
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: and uh a lot of black people within the intern city.
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: I grew up in inter city fifth Ward if it's
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: just used in Texas, so I know exactly when you
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: say the hood. I was born and raised in the
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: hood fearth Ward and so and so the average black
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: person who lives in the environment, don't really get out
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: of that environment. In fact, they live, they and they
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: work or if they want to call it work, and
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: they can die, and that can munity and never know
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: there's a downtown. Never know there are other layers of
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: life outside their movie theaters. They can go to their restaurants,
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: they can they can participate in a fine dining and
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: all these things because of the fact they've never been
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: exposed to that. And I really, I really like when
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: you said that because a lot of people they take
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: that for granted, who have been exposed. They think that's normal,
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: and it's not normal in the Inn city. It's not
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: normally at all. Right, That exposure is so important, you know,
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: because you're only going to go as far as you
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: think you can go, or see yourself going. So when
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: you see other people. That's why a lot of people,
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: you know, speak down about social media. But one of
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: the things I like about it is it gives us,
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: gives us a lot of access to see a lot
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: of young black people, right, believable, and it's believable. So
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: it's you look like me and I and I looked
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: like you, and you're saying, hey, I came from the hood,
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: and I see you doing really well. You're running your
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: successful break own business, and you're you're living a beautiful
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: home and your children, you're raising your children. You know
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: more with more world I use, and you know to
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: be good, upstanding citizens. And I see driving nice cards
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: and you're traveling the world. That will be inspiring to me,
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: and most importantly, it would make me realize that I
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: can obtain that too. And that is so true. I
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: always tell people I love to having an individual like
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: you who talk about credit. And I tell people that
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: when I was eighteen years old, Ms. Howardton, for some reason,
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: I understood I had to have good credit. I was
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: I wanted to protect my credit. I wanted credit. When
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: somebody told me the credit establishes you a better life
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: for you, I knew that, Okay, I'm gonna get good credit.
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: I got and I got my my They're closed and
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: I had my Montgomery Wards card back then, my Serious
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: card back then. Then I finally upgrade and got my
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: my American Exprest Green card. A big deal. I would this.
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: I would dank this. That Serious card back in the
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: day was bigger than the American Express back in the
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: day because you got your serious car, you were you
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: were the bar right there. So when I got that
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: serious card, I knew my credit was hit in the
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: right direction. What age were you when you realized the
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: importance of credit? You you want to hear something funny,
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: So I told you. I was raised by my dad.
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: My dad was horrible with bills, horrible. I remember coming home,
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: let me cut off. I'm like, Dad, wait a minute,
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: I flicked the sweats. Now we ain't got an electric
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: over here. But it was because he just wasn't um.
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: He wasn't conscious of just making payments on time, and
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: it was sometimes we didn't have it, and you know,
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: he did what he had to do to make it work.
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: But then it was times when he did have it,
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: and he just would forget. So I didn't learn that
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: from my dad. I remember when I turned eight, team
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: and a lot of we were graduating high school and
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: a lot of my friends were going to get store
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: cards because they were so easy to get. So they
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: were getting like structure and Dad and m expressing all
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: these cards, and I remember us going shopping and them
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: just you melt max the part out and I would
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: be very very very conscious, like, oh no, I don't
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: want to get too much because I don't want to.
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: I don't want to not be able to afford the payments.
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: So I was already thinking like that. I don't know
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: where it came from, but I was already responsible was
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: my finances at eight team. So now when my friends
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: those accounts want into collection status. I continued to build
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: and I continued to build, and at the age of
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: twenty one, my dad gifted me a duplex. So I
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: had a duplex at twenty one where I lived in
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: one unit and then I've rented the other unit out,
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: and then when I moved from there, both units were
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: rented out and it became a source of income for me.
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: But I always looked at finances and money and credit differently,
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: and it wasn't even I guess it just was self taught.
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: It was just natural for me. But it was so
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: important to get that at that age, it really was.
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: I'm talking to Rhodesia Howarton. She's the owner and founder
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: of Credit Medics LLC, which is a leading national credit
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: and business counsel consulting firm located in Philip off your
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: p A. This is one of two comp three companies.
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna talk to her about but I wanted to
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: expand on this because we, like she said, she was
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: doing this before the pandemic, and it wasn't something that
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: she just started last week. And she's been changing lives
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: and improving credit scores and making people understand the value
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: of credit and why credit is so important to you.
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: But we are in the middle of the pandemic and
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: people's credit scores are being damaged, and like you said,
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: your dad he didn't understand the value what that meant
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: to his credit score, but it didn't stop him from
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: being successful. It made me just a little bit more harder.
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: How serious should you take your credit scores? You should
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: take your credit score is very serious. Any um credit
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: or any line of credit that you are trying to
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: apply for to get an approval, they are going to
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: review your credit scores. They're going to inquire about you,
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: which is what we call an inquiry. So anytime you
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: apply for a line of credit, whatever that whoever that
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: creditor is, they are going to inquire about you. What
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: you need to understand, and it's simplest form is your
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: credit scores and your credit report is your financial portfolio.
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: So that is even gonna tell a credit creditor one
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: that you are credit worthy and trustworthy enough for me
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: to go ahead and lend you this credit based off
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: of your existing payment history. So if you already have debt,
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: and what do we call debt your card now, okay,
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: if you have a cardinal, you have student loan debt,
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: if you have a mortgage, um, if you have personal loans,
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: whatever the case may be. If you have credit cards,
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: if you are currently late on your existing debt, and
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: a creditor goes to pull your credit and they see that,
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: why would they want to lend you new debt? They
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: will not. So it's so important because that's going to
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: determine if you get approved in that based off of
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: your existing payment history. And the other thing would be
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: your credit utilization, which pertains to revolving credit. So you
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: know you mentioned early SAAR Serious card, so serious card.
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: What would be considered as a revolving credit card. It's
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: a retail card on dells may seez wal Mart Target.
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: Those are considered as revolving retail store cards. And then
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: you have your major credit cards in American Expressed master Card,
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: Visa Discover, which is another form of revolving credit You
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: don't want to have large balances on these credit cards.
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: You should only be using thirty percent at max of
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: your credit list. When you see that, you're going to
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: see a drastic decline in your scores. So that's another
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: thing that lenders look at to determine if they feel
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: like they can trust you. So just imagine if you
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: have a friend, Okay, well, let's say Rasshan, I said
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: the correctly, Rushian Shane Rashan, Rashan. If you lent me money, right,
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: you say, okay, I come to you, say, Rashan, can
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: I borrow you know, a hundred dollars until next month
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: and I'm gonna pay you back? And you say, you
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: know what runs You're sure I'm gonna give it to you.
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: So then I borrow the money from you. Next month comes,
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: you don't hear from me, right, So then another month go,
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: you don't have from me. So now you start to
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: get word. You say, listen out of game. Wright needs
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: your money off a good face, and he's supposed to
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: She's supposed to give me my money back. So now
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: our friends Sean, who is also you know, a mutual friend.
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: I go to him and I say, Sean, can I
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: want a hundred dollars til next month? And Sean is like,
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: you know what, I remember Rashan telling me that I
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: need your brow money. Let me go ask him. And
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: Sean comes to ask you, Hey, RO needs you to
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: tell you many. You say, man, don't you learn RO
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: needs you no money? I don't wait three months. I
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: ain't gotta dime yet. So that's the same way that
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: a lender looks at your payment habit and your utilization
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: habit to determine if they're more likely to get paid
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: back or less likely. You're listening to money making conversations
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: with Rashan McDonald. We'll be right back. Cars today are

- 1:22:45Speaker 1: Welcome back to money making conversations. I'm your host, Sean
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: McDonald ll. You know I love it because that is
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: a straight street talk right there, that street talk one
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: on one, street talk one on one right there. You know,
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: you know, man, and don't and don't show up and
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: don't show up. She got some new shoes on. Don't
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: show off. Some seafood, eat some seafood that come. Yeah.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: You know you got some strip on your plate, you know,
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: a pile of strip, and you owe me a hundred dollars.
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: Don't do that to me because I love that you
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: would I wouldn't love that you were natural. That's what
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: you're so successful because sometimes you got to talk to
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: people in the natural form so they can understand what
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: And that's what I do. I speak the language of
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: my people, yes, and break it down as simple as
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: I can. Well, okay, now, no, not right now. Our
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: people they're struggling and during this pandemic, and then you know,
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: the credit scores are being damaged. And we all know
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: when you hear that word thirty percent. And sometimes I
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: suggest people take a cash advance and you part of
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: that canshervance to make your minialment monthly payment so your
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: cred school don't go messed up. You put yourself on
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: automatic payment on the minimum of my mouth, okay, and
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: that way you you part of that advantage that you took,
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: said it aside, so you make those minimum one payments
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: doing this pandemic run that were your credit scores like you,
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: you agree with you, you cannot allow your credit score
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: to get damaged. It get damaged. You just you just
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: defaulted into a worse situation for yourself. But how can
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: these people survive? And when I say this, people of color,
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: minorities you know people who are already struggling. And you know,
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: the first of all, they gave us the twel hunt
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: and all stimulus check, and then they gave us a
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: six weekly check that they did July thirty one. And
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: now that they told us that the CDC can suspend evictions.
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: But then at the end of the year, you owe
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: that money for the rent you didn't pay. How can
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: we get around? You know, amagine getting caught up after
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: you already behind right and you don't have no income.
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: Now how crazy is that? You know how? I agree
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: with what you said, you know that cash advance. But
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: once again that goes back to see, here's the thing
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: I tell people to already be prepared. One of the
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: things that I have been blessed and fortunate to do
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: is to always stay prepared financially, because even when things
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: are good, I still don't go crazy. I have I
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: have very great discipline with my finances. So although I
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: would be you know what you would call I'm successful
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: and I have money, I still don't spend like I
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: have money. I don't. And I'm realizing that as I
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: begin to hang around people who are who have their finances,
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: their finances are stable. I'm realizing that a lot of
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: them don't make unnecessary purchases, so you have to be prepared.
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: But now we're in a situation so a lot of people,
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: and I know some of my associates, they have taken
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: that twelve hundred dollars and just blew it. They have
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: taken the unemployment checks and I've known, I know people
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: who have gotten ten thousand dollars and twenty thousand dollars
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: and I'm like, you got that money, I'm like, what
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: are you going to do with it? And it's scoring already,
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: but that could have helped them over just by making
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: the minimum payment. It will hold you over so that
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: you won't ask any late payments reporting That will decline
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: your score. Your scores will drop anywhere between thirty to
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: seventy points from one late payment. Wow, And can you
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: tell them how those how those those scores are reported? Uh,
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: not trying to complicate the conversation, but people need to
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: know that, you know, electronically in that world, then people
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: track you. They track you, and they track your main rabbit. Always.
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: It always amazes me, Rhodesia when I put my credit
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: card in and I mean, like seconds, I needs seconds
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: later it say has approved that that even today that
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: boggles me God that the model of computer forces tied
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: to that is incredible that because i know, at the
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: same same time, obtenously, I'm sure hundreds of thousand people
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: are pushing their card in that same type of machine
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: or card card reader and time obtainionsly and it's hitting
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: the word approved immediately. All rejection depended on where you are.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: Is data. All of it is is data, and it's
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: and it's like you said, it's tracking. Their tracking your payments,
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: they're tracking your utilization. They're tracking even down to where
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: you live at. You know, anytime you put on an application.
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: I don't know if people are aware of when you
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: pull your credit every address that you have lived at
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: that you used to apply for something shows up on
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: your credit report. So it's definitely attracting system. But the
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: credit bureaus are nothing but data companies, a billion dollar industry.
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: They get paid to collect data, to report your behalf
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: to then sell to the bigger banks and financial institutions.
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: That's all it is. Now one of your favorite are
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: I could say nonprofits that you are tied to are
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: associated with our creators called go Get crowned, tell us
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: about why you start that work not. I have my
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: points about actually, actually it's queening now. I changed it
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: to queening um and I do. I do a mentorship
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: program for young girls between the q r Q you
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: E E N I N G yes. And I also
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: wrote a book called Queening on Amazon. So so Queening
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: is a non practic organization for young black women okay
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: from the ages of fourteen to twenty one. And it's
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: basically me giving them all of the life skills that
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: I have acquired over the years. I'm talking about, you know,
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: teaching them how to see money as a tool and
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: not as just this tangible thing to just spend spend
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: since since spend teaching them how to invest. I'm also
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: a real estate investor, and I have several female friends
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: that are real estate investors. I bring them in to
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: talk to my girl so that they can see other
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: young black success for women or minority women who because
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: we have some Latinos also who looked like them and
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: curse from communities where they come from, so they can
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: see the example. I also bring in my other entrepreneur
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: friends from different industries. So some of my girls and
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: the start of the program will ask them, you know,
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: what interests you do you have an idea of where
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: you want your life to go or where you seeing yourself,
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: where you see yourself in the next five to fifteen years.
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: So whatever that industry is that they choose, I try
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: to get somebody to come in from that industry to
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: UM talk about their experience, the ups and the downs,
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: the highs and the lows, and then also ask them
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: if they with my mentoring my girls based off of
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: the industry that they choose, because I feel that that's
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: super important to to have a mentor UM. A lot
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: of things could be prevented a lot of trial and
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: error if you have a mentor who can help you
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: and assist you that you have access to along your journey.
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: I feel like that's very important. So we teach you
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: home ownership, We talk about, you know, self esteem. We
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: talk about African culture and the beauty of being Africans
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: and celebrating our feature is and celebrating our culture. We
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: talk about money management, we talk about it. That's when
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: we talk about all different types of life things that
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: could actually enriching you know, their lives. I'm tell you, Nicia,
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: you're one of my favorite people. You know, we you know,
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: you know we we we we we. We didn't connect
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: originally on our original set time. I would maybe she
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: don't want to talk to maybe maybe maybe you don't
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: want to talk to Rachelle McDonald the money maker. No, no, no,
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: you got it going on, queen, Come on that you
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: know I'm talking about Nisha Howardtons. Okay, we've already talked about.
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: You know, one of the businesses which is a CEO.
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: She's a CEO found up Credit Medics now the nonprofit
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: which is mentoring. The reason I said you're one of
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: my favorite people because that's why I established Money Making
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: Conversation for mentoring, because I can't mentor a lot of people.
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: People always approaching me. So I just said, I mentor
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: you by providing you with free information. Because that's what happens.
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: You can upload. I upload these interviews on my YouTube
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: channel for free, upload on my website for free. All
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: people have to do is just search and you can
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: you can hear an incredible person like you telling them
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: why they have to protect their credit, tell them how
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: they can protect themselves. And also the other side of
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: the table, they can find out about you and go
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: to you and take advantage of your services, take advantage
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: of what you're trying, how you're trying to change lives
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: with this mentorship program and letting people know the empowerment
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: of looking in the mirror, recognizing that the face that
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: they see, the color that they see, can be successful,
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: is beautiful, is worth standing strong, don't let the negative
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: pull you down. And that's what you're saying with the
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: Queenan program correctly, absolutely, absolutely, And I love the interaction
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: with these the young women. And then so it's so
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: it's so crazy because the mentorship that I did um
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: three years ago. My girls in that class, two of
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: them I have hired and they work for me. And
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: just to see the progress in the confidence and the
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: self esteem, by itself touches my heart. It touches my part.
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: And just to have them up under me. One of
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: my one of my men took min tees Um came
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: to me. She said, miss meech, I'm ready to buy
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: a duplex. I said, whatever I gotta do to make
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: it happy for you, Let's do it. You know. She
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: could say, hey, missie, I want to go buy a
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: channel back. But this time, miss me, I want to
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: get to but you know what I'm saying. So that's
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: touching to me. Putting that, putting that crown on your head.
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: You know what, you got your black I'll checking you
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: know miss credit Man, you know good that girl the
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: queen and I like that Thilano queen e. But before
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: we wrap up, a queen and I wanted to talk
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: about to get well urgent care, which is like a
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: medical facility. Is that it's that part of the franchises
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: or this an individual location that you are Actually that
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: was just that was just an investment that came um
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: that came up. Somebody asked me, did would I'd be
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: interested in investing in the urgent care clinic? And at
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: the time I didn't know anything about it, right, I
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: honestly did not. I started to do my own research,
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: and of course, with any of the investment, it's risky.
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: You know. I always tell people, don't you know, invest
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: money that you're expecting to get back, it's really a risk.
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: Rather I mean real estate is the risk is you
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: know less less, But in any investment is going to
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: be risky. So I didn't know anything about it at
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: the time, and I just felt like, hey, let me
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: just shoot my shot. And I did it, and it
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: was one of my friends. Her husband was actually a doctor,
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: and he was even as a doctor, you're still an employee.
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: And he was working for UM I think it was
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: Pimont Medical Facility facility and what he was. He decided that,
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: you know, he didn't want to be an employee anymore.
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: He said, you know, I'm overseeing five of these urgent
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: care clinics and I'm seeing these invoices. I'm seeing these
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: invoices that I'm like, no, people, you're looking at his
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: check n check look at that, and it's breaking down.
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: Youre he's looking at the white folks running around here. Okay, okay,
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: making all this good money. Okay. He said, oh, they're
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: making this, making this women, and I'm making this. So
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: he started, you know, started women. So he decided that
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: he wanted to do his own urgent care and he
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: was looking for investors. And his wife was a friend
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: of mine, and she you know, brought the opportunity to me.
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: She said, you know, would you be willing to invest? UM.
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: I did my research, and I just went ahead and
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: just you know, and some of his own faiths too,
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: you know, because you can do all the research, you want,
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: but some of it, you know, like I said, you
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: have to you have to sit down and go toothless
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: tools for now. What I'm talking about this is when
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: you say, let's let's talk about get well urgent care.
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: First of all, it's medical and we all know, okay,
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: people gonna die. People don't get sick. Okay, that's that's
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: the fact of life, okay. Now, And so with that,
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: and so the investment part of ability possibilities like ore,
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: where are they putting it at? That's all you have
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: to worry about. Who's running it and where are they
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: gonna put it at? Because I've seen these urgent cares
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: and they and they always got cars park out in
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: front of them, okay, And that means that people need
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: that service. And so so from a standpoint of your research, you,
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: like you said, you're riding on the statement that I
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: just said, people are gonna die and people are going
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: to get sick. Okay. So with that being said, how
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: do you participate? Are you do you go buy your facility?
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: You're an investor? Do you check on it? Do you
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: have board meetings or what? How do you do? I
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: sit on the board and I'm really just a silent investor.
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: So of course I get you know, quarterly checks based
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: off of my sacility of equity in the company. Right
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: now that is here. Or do we see more franchises
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: that you will be associated with or you said rou Sean,
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: we're gonna see how this plays out for the next
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: one or to actual league. Um, I'm probably not going
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: to do any more business with them right there, right there?
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: See did I tell you? Did I she's one of
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: my top people now because seem you cannot win being fake,
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: you can win right there right But what I am
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: working on, it's free times in my million dollar business,
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: Credit Medics. Cool. Cool, that's what I'm doing. Cool. And
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: in the process of doing that right now, trying to
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: um create a software to make it very very very
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: um manageable and um very easy to navigate through and
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff. So that's the only piece
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: that's missing to Credit Medics, and then I will franchise
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: my business. Well, my friend, I want to let you know, uh,
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: I got a newsletter that goes out to my fans
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: named some thousand, ninety plus thousand fans every two weeks.
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: I want to put you all Credit Medics in there,
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: because like I said, you move to the top of
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: the food chain with me because you keep read, keep
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: on because see the thing, the reason the reason I
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: say that is that we have a lot of relatable
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: values that I come from the inner city and and
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: I realized that, you know, when I was exposed to
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: information outside of the inner city, I am the person
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: I am today. So I'm always a proponent. And also
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: I give back. I give back in so many different ways.
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: And like said, money, money and conversations. Just wanted the format,
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: but I work with HBCU platforms should information to exposure
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: at such a high level. And so all I know
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: is that you have a friend in Rashaan McDonald. I'm
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: so glad we was able to pull off this interview
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: and portaling porting your nonprofit organization is beautiful. I'm gonna

- 1:37:45Speaker 1: all black old with the crown on, putting it tilting

- 1:37:54Speaker 1: Tell us, Mr Niche show. So you can actually go

- 1:38:14Speaker 1: My office is beautiful and there's enough space for me
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: to actually have it's like a conference area, a seminar.
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: We can have seminars. So I'm gonna be offering monthly
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: free workshops to existing business owners black small business owners
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: because I feel like that's a piece that's missing. You

- 1:39:40Speaker 1: that's important in the today and pandemic, when we're being
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: overtly affected by the virus, being overtly affected by the

- 1:40:54Speaker 1: they find so scarce and so challenging to access in
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: order to get them on the fans plant tack and

- 1:42:14Speaker 1: I'm your host, Sean McDonald. My next guest, Glenn Robinson.
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: The third is an NBA basketball player. That's what you
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: know when you see somebody, But that's all you think.
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: But life is more than just being an NBA basketball player.
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: His A r I Foundation, which stands for Angels Are
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: Really Indeed, as a nonprofit organization aimed at empowering fathers
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: and helping create deeper bonds between fathers and their children.
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: They're also they also provide resources to help elevate fatherless
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: children and families. Glenn was inspired to launch his initiative
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: after the birth of his daughter Ariana Arianna help him
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: super saying it correctly, and wanted to shine a light
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: on the importance of the relationship between children and their fathers.
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: Glenn highlights fathers and their stories on his Instagram page
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: and wants to shine and light on someday amazing work
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: they're doing. Please work with the money making conversation, my man,
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: Glenn Robinson, the third are you doing today? I had
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: to get a lot out there live before I spoke
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: to you, man, A lot, a lot, because you know
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: the thing about it. First of all, Uh, what are you?
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: What are you calling it from right now? I'm calling
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: it from Indiana, Indiana, Indiana, Indiana. So I'm based in Atlanta, Georgia.
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: Syndicate nationally on podcasts and all that good this series XM.
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: The beauty of bringing an individual or what I wanted
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: to talk to you about first of all was why
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: they why was their need for you to do a
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: foundation like this. I think that is uh a need
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: you know in our community, especially our Black communities, to
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: feel that that that for us fathers you know, first off,
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: and to feel that fatherhood role if the father is
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: not around, you know what, meaning just stepping up and
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: empowering other parents, other fathers, UM doing what you can
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: to help um. You know, our young kids grow up
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: in today's society, I think they need all a mentorship
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: and all the help that they need. And having a
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: daughter myself and going through this process, you know, I
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: just know how much my daughter means to me, and
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: as she grows every day is important, you know. So
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: if I'm able to help other people and just have
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: that same type of impact in their lives and spread
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: that that that knowledge you know, around, I think that
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: we can we can start to have more successful communities
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: and more successful children in our communities. That's really important
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: that you say that. Really, I I have a daughter,
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: uh she's only child, and just having a child in general,
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: giving life really changed my perspective because in a way,
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: you know, we all live a selfish life. We just
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: want to do what's what's best for us, what's what
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: we gotta do to get what we want. And when
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: you have a child, that changes your value system. Talk
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: about how to change your value system, Glenn. Yeah, it
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: hangs a lot, you know. I think being a professional athlete,
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: you know, I just finished my six season. Uh, I
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: finished with the Philadelphia has haventy six is this year, um,
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: and I'm now a free agent. But looking at how
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: I was as a rookie and then now after six years,
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: and you know, I have a daughter who's to um,
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: you know, my time management changed, you know, my responsibilities
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: obviously change, you know. UM obviously my finances and what
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: I'm doing with my money, UM changed a lot. You know.
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: So it matures you, and it makes you grow up,
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: um in several different ways, you know. And I think
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: that if it wasn't for my daughter, UM, you know,
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: I just see how far you know back that you
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: tend to be and you think that you know everything,
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: but you really don't, you know, And and and you
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: know it's funny how how that how that comes out.
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: It really is amazing. I know that. Uh, I would
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: tell people the the best time I have with my daughter,
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: wouldn't she when you know, when she was about gets
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: up to about eight months, that's when she wasn't able
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: to push off. Then they started pushing off. Then also
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: they think they ruled the world. But when she was
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: just falling asleep on my chests and you know, laying
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: next to me and just just barely you know you
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: use proper upland and then they leaned on one side
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: because they didn't I mean also control to me, man,
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: those those memories stick with me. Man, that all the
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: memories stick with me, but that memory of it just
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: being able to fall asleep on my chest and and
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: lay next to me, and just realizing that how much
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: power I have, and shaping a mind, how much power
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: I have, and delivering a good person to this world.
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: I'm sure when I read your intro and I read
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: the research on you, it really almost messed you up
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: a little in a good way. The responsibility. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: yeah it did. Uh. You know, first off, I thought
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: I was, you know, obviously being a basketball player. You know,
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: I thought my first kid was gonna be a boy.
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: You know, we were gonna play basketball. You know, I
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: thought that it was gonna be all my way, you know,
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: and and and and God and life got a funny
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: sense of humor and you know how you really expected
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: and you know, and and my biggest blessing in my life,
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: that's been my daughter, I think, just because of the
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: alleys that I've been able to create, you know, surrounding her.
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: And that's the reason why I started the foundation is um,
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: you know, I didn't have a boy, you know, my
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: last name in a sense, you know, a lot of
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: men tend to worry about that, you know, And I
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: think that I just wanted to show her my genuine
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: love and create something that she'll see and look back
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: one day and she'll pick up this foundation because it's
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: named after her already, and she'll she'll realize, you know,
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: what we've created, and how many people that we've helped,
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: you know, and growing up and and as she grows, Um,
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: I do have that influence on her life. And I think,
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: like you said, that's the biggest thing that we can
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: control as parents, is you know, we we do have
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: a lot of influence in their lives. As they tend
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: to get older, you know, so that, um, they're going
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: in the right path, you know, whether that's racism, whether
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: that's schooling and education, whether that's you know, career paths,
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: whatever that is. I think that they contend to kind
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: of put put themselves on a decent past if they
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: have that influence around me. We know, we're talking about
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: changing people's lives. We're talking about controlling destiny. And you
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: know this season you played for the Philadelphia seventy sixers
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: and you got to experience the bubble down in Orlando, Florida,
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: and basically you didn't have control of your life anymore
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: at that point, I believe. Can you tell everybody I
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: had cg Color alone that last week and he had
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: me laughing just talking about how I was from your perspective,
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: and tell us that this walk us through the steps
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: of how controlled the testing process of living life in
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: the bubble. If there was some good thing, tell us
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: about it, the annoying things you can tell about, tell
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: us about it, because you had no control of your
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: life at that point. Glenn. Yeah, you know, I think
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: the hardest decision was, you know, they gave us a choice,
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: do we want to go or not? You know, do
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: you want to receive your paycheck and go to this bubble.
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: And we didn't know anything much about the virus at
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: that point, and we didn't know anything what this bubble
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: was gonna be like. So I had to make the
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: decision to lead my two year old daughter, which was hard,
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: but you know, I didn't want to leave my teammates down. Um.
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: I wanted to go do my job. I want to
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: go try to win a championship. And then my main
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: concern concern was just staying. Say, you know, so if
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: we had to test every day, that's what we had
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: to do, even though, like you said, it wasn'tnoying, but um,
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: we test literally every day for the coronavirus um. And
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: they would stick the Q tip up your nose, um,
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: and they would swab us mouth and and nose every
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: single day. Um. You know, the first two days there
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: we were in quarantine. You couldn't leave your rooms, and
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: they would bang on your door and just drop your food,
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: you know, at your door, and you will open it.
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: Nobody would be there. You grab your door and close it.
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: You grab your food and close the door and then
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: open you up your box lunch or boxes dinner, you know.
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: And that was the first two days they sprinting down
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: the hall you COVID natine not even on the hallway
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: no more. If it was there, That's that's funny, man,
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: you know. But my overall experience, I think it was
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: a lot better than I thought it was gonna be. Um.
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: You know, the food got better. They started opening up
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: things for us such, you know, such with Gough, Um
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: we could go. You know, they had a pool for us,
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: you know, allowance for us, um, a bar for us.
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: It was. It was a lot of different things, a barbershop. Um,
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: so there was. Life started to get a little bit
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: better after day probably thirty year around there. But I
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: was I was trapped in there for forty five days
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: before we lost and and and we exited out and
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: came home. M But that was an experience that I'm
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: gonna tell my daughter about my grandkids about. Um. You know,
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: a lot a lot of people won't be able to
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: experience that. And I'm just thankful that I came out
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: of it healthy and and and still you know, remain
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: the same and so so and so far, no one's
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: tested positive for COVID eighteen at the NBA bubble. They haven't,
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: you know, And I think that that's the only way
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: that you can do is if you're gonna have sports,
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: you have to do it in the forum that they did,
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: and it was hard to do. It was strict, and
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: they spent a lot of money, I think a hundred
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: and fifty million to keep us safe. But I think
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: if you're gonna do it, you have to do it
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: like that. If you want to keep people safe, well,
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: the more important thing is that just like me, Glenn,
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: I'm speaking to Glenn Robinson, the third UH. He's plays
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: currently for the Philadelphia seventy sixers. The name sounds familiar.
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: He has a father father, University of Mixican shop shooting dad.
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: I remember their run. I remember that run. Man, oh boy,
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: I tell when they run and then it came to NBA. Man,
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: I just hate that shot, man, I hate it. And
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: it's like Steph Curry shot, you know when it goes
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: up and like how could he miss? Type shot? And
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: that was your father's gift and you followed your father
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: was It wasn't an option that Glenn to not play basketball.
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: Can you play tennis? Can you play for my wide receiver?
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: Been the next Julius Joe Julian June well, I can
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: think of his name right there, being a wide receiver.
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: What were your options there? Brother? He he just looked
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: at you put a ball in your hand when you
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: can basketball in your hand. That was it, what was apting.
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: It's funny I tell people story of the time I
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: was born premature. So I was born three months early,
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: and I was months in the incubator, and my dad
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: and mom put a little produced you know, they put
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: a little mini basketball and my incubator when I was young.
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: So I like to tell everybody, I've been playing ball
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: since I was since I was an incubator six months.
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: But no, you know, that was one of the things
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: I was always grateful for my mom and dad, especially
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: my dad being a number one pick um, you know,
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: in ninety four and really being a man that in
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: that air. Um. He never forced it on me. You know,
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: I played football growing up. I played other sports growing up,
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: but I fell in love with basketball, and I followed
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: his footsteps in that sense. But you know, um, I
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: think that I've always tried to remain you know, a
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: different person, you know, and not just follow his footsteps,
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: but create different paths, you know, throughout my career to
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: kind of separate me. And you know, he never had
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: a foundation, Um, but he did give back to the
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: kids again Indiana where we're from, and what holds a
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: free basketball camp every year. Um. So I continue to
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: do that, that same thing, and on top of that,
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: I'm doing my foundation. Angels are real indeed who were
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: helping empower other father So I try to take what
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: he's done and model his example, but also continue to
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: make it better and elevate it even more and reach
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: even more people, because, um, the more people we can reach,
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: even if it's just a few kids, who knows how
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: their lives will change. You know, I'm glad. Uh, I'm
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: enjoying this interview with you. Your your very unique voice,
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: and and you just happen to be able to dribble
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: a little basketball, okay, and and I respect. And I'm
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: gonna tell you I'm one of the little You know,
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: everybody thinks they can play bad, but I can really
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: play ball. But I was one of them hard headed people.
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: I thought the coach is gonna eventually come to a
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: neighborhood park see me and tell me I can start.
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: I didn't want to go out there practice they were
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: I was that arrogant you know, I was as I was,
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: as the neighbor would say, I was all Park gLing,
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: I was all Park. I was a bad boy and
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: uh and so. But you know, when I look at
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: the NBA and I look at the ability to play
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: an NBA, man, that's special man. You know, that's that's
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: a unique talent. What does it take to be uh
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: uh NBA player? Because I from a mindset standpoint, from
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: a physical standpoint, I knew what I could do. But
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: I know I didn't have the ability because first of all,
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: I didn't have the discipline to be an NBA player
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: because I wouldn't even I wouldn't even audition or going
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: for the basketball practice because I thought I was better
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: than everybody else. So what does it take to be
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: an NBA player? Yeah, I think the biggest things that
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: I've noticed, and like we talked about, I just finished
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: my sixth season in the NBA. So you know, for
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: whatever it's worth, you know, I've been able to stick
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: in this league after seeing a lot of people come
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: in and out the league. I was drafted second I
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: was drafted second round, and it's only a small percentage
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: of players that I'm gonna tell you something when you
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: went pro. I was mad at you. I was mad
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: at you. I was like, what is he doing? What
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: is't he was a good busio team too? What do
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: you continue with? I just want to get that out years.
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: I was young, you know, I had just turned twenties,
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: you know, but and I had no idea about the
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: whole business. But um, you know, I think after being
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: around now for a few years, Um, what really separates
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: you know, NBA players and a lot of players that
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: I've seen, and um, discipline and all those things that
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: you've said. But just to break it down to simple terms,
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: is whatever you got going on in your life, whether
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: as women, whether that's finance issues, its family issues, kids,
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: whatever that's going on in your life, you have to
- 1:55:37Speaker 1: find some way. When you were able to come onto
- 1:55:40Speaker 1: the court everything that happens in those lines, you're able
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: to take your discipline and your hard work and you're
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: able to turn it into success by focusing and locking in.
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: You know, when when when this distractions out there and
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: you're not able to focus your mind, um, it can
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: really mess you up. You know. And NBA players and
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: athletes in general, we already got a lot going on
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: the money that's thrown at us people. That's thrown at us. Um.
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: And and that discipline is what you have to have. Well,
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: you know I've been uh, but I participate in the
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: high level, as we say, in the entertainment game. So
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: I know discipline is important because it does come to you.
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: It always amazes me how I'm financially able to do
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: a lot of things, but I get free meals, I
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: can get discount on my clothes, and my wife just
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: looks at me to go, really, really, this is gonna
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: be fu and uh. And because I always make a
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: point of now I got you, I gotta I paid
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: when I go in because it's because I'm an entrepreneur.
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: So I know being an entrepreneur, you know you have
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: to be with respect people and and tell them that
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: their brain has value. And so when I look at
- 1:56:44Speaker 1: you and and and this conversation the first time we
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: ever talked. But I as a as a person who
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: talks to a lot of people, Glenn, Um, I'm a
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: fan just just this conversation, and I want to maintain
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: a relationship with you because your your your your success
- 1:56:59Speaker 1: and your your your brand is beyond the court. It's
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: beyond the court. Man. I don't know if anybody told
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: you that, but just hearing how you talk, you know
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: you God just gave you the gift, your gift at
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: someplace else, brother, and you just need to find it
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: and hold on to it and get the right people
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: around you. And I'm not telling you to quick the NBA.
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: I'm just telling you this. This foundation, you know, uh
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: that you started. The mission is to empower fathers with
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: their central resources that will allow them to be the
- 1:57:29Speaker 1: best dads they can be. We will also provide assistance
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: to fatherless children and families. Tell us about that part,
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: providing assistance to fatherless children and families. How does that work?
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: Glenn Robinson the third Yeah, when I first, you know,
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: started my foundation, Uh, I was playing for the Warriors
- 1:57:46Speaker 1: at the beginning of this year, and uh, there was
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: a there was a family in my building who had
- 1:57:50Speaker 1: just one day they placed off a lottery. Uh. They
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: didn't have, you know, very much money. Uh they they
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: they you know, income wasn't very high. What paint for
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: rent was very low because they wanted to do a lottery. Um,
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: but she couldn't get in the door. I was just
- 1:58:06Speaker 1: moving in as well, and myself and my brother here
- 1:58:09Speaker 1: you're younger than me three hundred pounds, big dude. You
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: know he he actually played football, I hope. So, so
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: we helped this lady out. Her name was miss c
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: C and um, she broke down to the front desk, Um,
- 1:58:24Speaker 1: you know, thank you to Glenn and Jelyn for for
- 1:58:27Speaker 1: the help, and would love to cook for them one day. Um.
- 1:58:30Speaker 1: So we ended up going in and to her spot
- 1:58:33Speaker 1: and she cooked us food, fried chicken mac and cheese.
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: I hadn't had a home, couldn't meal in a while,
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: you know, I wrote a lot. That's a meal, you
- 1:58:42Speaker 1: fried chicken mac and you're already starting at the at
- 1:58:44Speaker 1: the at the they said that the at the core
- 1:58:47Speaker 1: of good home cook meal right there, brother exactly. So
- 1:58:51Speaker 1: so we were getting ready to eat, and my brother
- 1:58:53Speaker 1: and I we sit down and she just had two chairs. Um,
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: you know, to to just patio picnic chairs. Um, and
- 1:59:01Speaker 1: you know we ate. And after that, my brother lived
- 1:59:03Speaker 1: at me and he was like, you know, you've been
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: talking about this foundation. I think the first family. I
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: think the perfect opportunity would be to help them. Um,
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: you gotta get them a table at least. And I
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: was like, you know what, you're right, and we went.
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: A couple of weeks later. I surprised her, told her
- 1:59:18Speaker 1: that we were gonna help get lunch. I was gonna
- 1:59:20Speaker 1: take her out. Um. She does her husband, she's actually
- 1:59:24Speaker 1: been involved in you know, domestic violence. She has two children, UM,
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: no father involved in the house. And she's worked two
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: or three jobs her you know, their whole lives. Um.
- 1:59:34Speaker 1: And spend her last thirty dollars to prepare that meal
- 1:59:36Speaker 1: for my brother. Not because we watched her hitting the house. UM,
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: and I told her we were gonna go get some lunch. UM.
- 1:59:43Speaker 1: I furnished her whole apartment twenty six pieces of furniture.
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: And they were sleeping on the ground, all three of them.
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: And they now got bed to sleep on that night. UM.
- 1:59:53Speaker 1: And she she just called me the other day. And
- 1:59:55Speaker 1: her son just became a father, and she's now a grandmother.
- 1:59:57Speaker 1: And I still maintain that relationship. And UM, those are
- 2:00:01Speaker 1: the type of families, UM, that we that we help
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: when we talk about fatherless children, and and and and
- 2:00:07Speaker 1: her son. UM actually told me that I'm the reason
- 2:00:10Speaker 1: why he wanted to get a job. He went and
- 2:00:12Speaker 1: got h He just started as an electrician. Um. He's
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: on a path of success and as a father. So
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: those those stories and those type of things that we
- 2:00:19Speaker 1: do that mean a lot more than, like you said,
- 2:00:22Speaker 1: anything that I can do on the basketball court. I'm
- 2:00:24Speaker 1: able to help that family take them basically from off
- 2:00:27Speaker 1: the streets. And now that because I spent a couple
- 2:00:29Speaker 1: of thousand dollars, you know, on them, not even a
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: lot of money, but to get them in a decent
- 2:00:34Speaker 1: bed at night. That's what it's about. You're listening to

- 2:01:40Speaker 1: back to money making conversations. I'm your host, Sean McDonald. Well,
- 2:01:44Speaker 1: you know it's really interesting, man, because I've been fortunate
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: to change people's lives, you know, with with emotional assistance,
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: physical assistance, financial assistance. And people just want to let
- 2:01:56Speaker 1: you know that they're human, that's all. And once you
- 2:01:59Speaker 1: can remove, uh, you know, a layer of embarrassment, and
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: that's sleeping on the floor of the lawyer embarrassment. Uh
- 2:02:05Speaker 1: old gona close that you got to wear the school,
- 2:02:08Speaker 1: the wear of the work or a lawyer of embarrassment.
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: It allows you to focus on who you really are
- 2:02:14Speaker 1: and can be. And that's what you did for them.
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: But you know, you allow them to walk into that
- 2:02:19Speaker 1: apartment not stressed, to walk out feeling good because they
- 2:02:24Speaker 1: felt like humans again. And and that that's why, that's
- 2:02:28Speaker 1: why I was just when I when I when this
- 2:02:29Speaker 1: interview with scheduled. You know, they they you know, we
- 2:02:31Speaker 1: have a meeting all the time, Glenn, who who are
- 2:02:33Speaker 1: gonna bring? What? What did he do? Because I'm not
- 2:02:36Speaker 1: just gonna bring black basketball players on my show. And
- 2:02:38Speaker 1: they that did my research and I went wow wow,
- 2:02:42Speaker 1: But what what is impressing me more is you? Though?
- 2:02:45Speaker 1: Is you? What? What's what's what's the driving force of you?
- 2:02:50Speaker 1: Because a foundation is what it is. But the success
- 2:02:54Speaker 1: of the foundation is the the is the leader, the founder,
- 2:02:58Speaker 1: the person who wakes up thing. Anybody go to sleep
- 2:03:00Speaker 1: thinking about trying to make it big or try to
- 2:03:02Speaker 1: try to try to save more people than sometimes you
- 2:03:06Speaker 1: umtually you know, you can only put your arms around
- 2:03:08Speaker 1: so many people at one time. Sometimes we try to
- 2:03:10Speaker 1: trying to try to expand and hurt your back. So
- 2:03:13Speaker 1: before you hurt your back, man, tell us about you. Man,
- 2:03:16Speaker 1: tell us about you. Man. Yeah, I mean, I uh,
- 2:03:20Speaker 1: you know everything that I got, you know, I've seen, Um,
- 2:03:24Speaker 1: you know, my dad was successful. He had you know,
- 2:03:28Speaker 1: money and cars and things like that, But that never
- 2:03:30Speaker 1: was my purpose or what drove me because I've seen
- 2:03:33Speaker 1: that and I was fortunate enough to see that with him.
- 2:03:36Speaker 1: But I grew up in the house with my mom
- 2:03:37Speaker 1: and my grandma. My grandma's from Mississippi, you know, my
- 2:03:41Speaker 1: mama and grandma. Currently they still live, uh, you know,
- 2:03:44Speaker 1: close to Gary, Indiana. So we met West people and
- 2:03:46Speaker 1: at the end of the day, they care about who
- 2:03:48Speaker 1: are you as a person rather than whatever else that's
- 2:03:51Speaker 1: going on. Is at the end of the day, when
- 2:03:53Speaker 1: I look at myself in the mirror, what have I done?
- 2:03:56Speaker 1: Who am I as a person? And I feel and
- 2:03:58Speaker 1: as I walked through just finding my purpose, I know
- 2:04:01Speaker 1: that I don't know my I don't I feel like
- 2:04:03Speaker 1: I don't know my exact purpose or mission yet, but
- 2:04:06Speaker 1: it's coming and through this foundation, like you said, Um,
- 2:04:10Speaker 1: I've realized that, you know, it's about helping the masses
- 2:04:13Speaker 1: of amount of people. From what I do as a
- 2:04:16Speaker 1: professional athlete. You know, I'm able to take you know,
- 2:04:19Speaker 1: my six years experience as an athlete and able to
- 2:04:22Speaker 1: talk to kids, able to help fathers, you know, different
- 2:04:25Speaker 1: alleys of people that I can reach. Um, and affecting
- 2:04:28Speaker 1: people's lives. That's just who I am in and since
- 2:04:31Speaker 1: I was first in the league, you know, I would
- 2:04:33Speaker 1: find kids to kind of help out here and there,
- 2:04:35Speaker 1: or go to the hospital and visit the sick kids
- 2:04:37Speaker 1: and play video games with them. It's just been who
- 2:04:40Speaker 1: I am. And I found a way to create a
- 2:04:43Speaker 1: team around my foundation and we meet weekly on different
- 2:04:46Speaker 1: ideas that I have a different you know, suggestions that
- 2:04:48Speaker 1: they might have a families to help. So I put
- 2:04:51Speaker 1: a real structure around this because I know that I
- 2:04:53Speaker 1: take from being a father and having my daughter and
- 2:04:57Speaker 1: um me just being in her life as a blessing.
- 2:04:59Speaker 1: So you know, I want to be able to take
- 2:05:01Speaker 1: that and help others to just be that role and
- 2:05:03Speaker 1: kind of model figure for them, because you know, they
- 2:05:06Speaker 1: look at professional athletes and a lot of people do
- 2:05:09Speaker 1: at superheroes and this and that. But like you said,
- 2:05:11Speaker 1: at the end of the day, we're the same as you.
- 2:05:13Speaker 1: We put our pants on, the same thing as everybody else.
- 2:05:16Speaker 1: And if they're able to understand that in some type
- 2:05:19Speaker 1: of way and you're able to come to terms and
- 2:05:21Speaker 1: them to look at you as a as a human
- 2:05:22Speaker 1: being and a decent human being, because we already know
- 2:05:25Speaker 1: how people think about athletes, then they're able to connect
- 2:05:28Speaker 1: with you. And I've noticed that. Well you know, I'm
- 2:05:30Speaker 1: connecting with you right now. Okay, and so, uh, I
- 2:05:33Speaker 1: know you just got some swag down here that you're
- 2:05:35Speaker 1: selling on your website. You know, got you know, some
- 2:05:38Speaker 1: selection when you're sold out on the on the black
- 2:05:40Speaker 1: T shirt, they're sold out. You got the hoop, got
- 2:05:44Speaker 1: the jersey, got that the dad had, got to pull
- 2:05:48Speaker 1: over hoodie. You know. So I'm telling what I got.
- 2:05:51Speaker 1: I got a newsletter goes out to an eighty thousand
- 2:05:54Speaker 1: people and uh and I'm it goes out by monthly
- 2:05:58Speaker 1: until next week. I'm gonna drop your store, your your
- 2:06:02Speaker 1: store into my newsletter and then recommend people browse your
- 2:06:07Speaker 1: your you and then and then ilso on my website,
- 2:06:09Speaker 1: I have a store, and I'm if you don't mind,
- 2:06:12Speaker 1: I'm gonna drop your your swag gear on there for
- 2:06:15Speaker 1: potential purchase as well, because that's what I do with
- 2:06:17Speaker 1: money making conversation. This because you know, this is amazing.
- 2:06:21Speaker 1: This is a free format. Man. You know, my my
- 2:06:24Speaker 1: blessing is coming aware, my blessing talking to you because
- 2:06:26Speaker 1: I get to beat you man, I'm going like this
- 2:06:28Speaker 1: brother here, man, if this brother like because I'm trying
- 2:06:31Speaker 1: to this is how this is how I think. Man,
- 2:06:33Speaker 1: I'm trying to figure out how I can help this
- 2:06:35Speaker 1: brother raise money because see what I don't like here, man,
- 2:06:39Speaker 1: When I was managing Steve Harvey, uh never you know,
- 2:06:41Speaker 1: and uh you know he's to spend his money. He
- 2:06:44Speaker 1: he's a brag about it. I spend my money on
- 2:06:46Speaker 1: my foundation. I go do Now, you really need to
- 2:06:49Speaker 1: be spending somebody else's money that keep your money in
- 2:06:54Speaker 1: your foundation, build your brand so other people have value
- 2:06:58Speaker 1: in what you were saying, and then they give you
- 2:07:01Speaker 1: money and you can do more. And so that's my
- 2:07:04Speaker 1: that's my thoughts is running through my mind with you,
- 2:07:07Speaker 1: is like how can we get together and you know,
- 2:07:11Speaker 1: put together your e p K and start putting together
- 2:07:14Speaker 1: sissor real so we can get you some get you
- 2:07:17Speaker 1: some forwards and some some some Truish banks and some
- 2:07:20Speaker 1: Bank of Americas on your website, dude, because you know
- 2:07:26Speaker 1: it's it's people out that d there Michigan need to
- 2:07:28Speaker 1: be on here making some donations. You know what I'm saying.
- 2:07:31Speaker 1: You know all at I'm just telling you how I
- 2:07:35Speaker 1: think because you go to university. You know, I'm excited. Hey, brother,
- 2:07:40Speaker 1: you know like I'm gonna give you after this call
- 2:07:42Speaker 1: if you want to give myself number. Anytime you have
- 2:07:45Speaker 1: a good or bad thought, you called me. Okay, this
- 2:07:47Speaker 1: is what I do for a liver. Girl. You if
- 2:07:49Speaker 1: you don't even know who I am, google me. Brother.
- 2:07:51Speaker 1: All I do is make people famous. All I do
- 2:07:54Speaker 1: is make corporations a lot of money. Because I think
- 2:07:56Speaker 1: that's my skill. That's you know, when I was eighteen
- 2:07:58Speaker 1: years old, I realized that was my gift. I just
- 2:08:00Speaker 1: didn't then't understand it until I was in my authorities.
- 2:08:03Speaker 1: I just always used word like I'm just at the
- 2:08:05Speaker 1: right place at the right time. I'm just lucky like that.
- 2:08:07Speaker 1: And then I realized, you know, that's what you do.
- 2:08:10Speaker 1: You know, that's what you that's your gift. You're able
- 2:08:12Speaker 1: to look at things and evaluate people and really push
- 2:08:15Speaker 1: them to lenings and give a clear understanding of what
- 2:08:18Speaker 1: they can do with their lives because so many people don't,
- 2:08:21Speaker 1: you know, because you know, they've been told what they're
- 2:08:23Speaker 1: supposed to do. Like and I was, I was told
- 2:08:25Speaker 1: to go to college. I got to college, which was
- 2:08:28Speaker 1: truly a blessing for me. But I realized that wasn't
- 2:08:31Speaker 1: what and my degree is in mathematics, and I went
- 2:08:34Speaker 1: to work like I was told. I went to work
- 2:08:36Speaker 1: for IBM. Then I realized, this ain't what I want
- 2:08:38Speaker 1: to do. This ain't what I want to do. And
- 2:08:41Speaker 1: so so I'm listening to you. You're successful as NBA player.
- 2:08:44Speaker 1: I'm just telling you right now. I don't during how
- 2:08:46Speaker 1: many teams you've been on because you're in the n
- 2:08:48Speaker 1: b A. You played in the n b A. I
- 2:08:50Speaker 1: know how hard it is. The D league is full
- 2:08:52Speaker 1: of people want to be you, you know, and so
- 2:08:58Speaker 1: and so so. But then what is bigger than that?
- 2:09:00Speaker 1: You know. Look, as great as Lebron is what he
- 2:09:04Speaker 1: does away for the league, I respect way more, way
- 2:09:07Speaker 1: more because I know God gave him the ability to dribble,
- 2:09:12Speaker 1: to dunk, the i Q, to be able to be
- 2:09:14Speaker 1: the best basketball player in the world. But everything else,
- 2:09:17Speaker 1: he's thinking about everything else you're thinking about, Glenn, that
- 2:09:21Speaker 1: wasn't part of the equation when people were telling you
- 2:09:24Speaker 1: what you were supposed to do, telling you what you
- 2:09:26Speaker 1: were capable of doing. This is something that you have
- 2:09:29Speaker 1: matriculated through life and said this is who I want
- 2:09:32Speaker 1: to be, This is what I want to represent this
- 2:09:34Speaker 1: and and it was borne out by the birth of
- 2:09:36Speaker 1: your daughter. Man, I'm telling him, I'm inspired talking to you, brother,
- 2:09:40Speaker 1: and believe me, I've done a lot for you to
- 2:09:42Speaker 1: be inspiring me. Appreciate that's here and I appreciate you
- 2:09:49Speaker 1: having me here today. Well, the thing is is that
- 2:09:51Speaker 1: man to be successful, Glenn, And that's what money making
- 2:09:53Speaker 1: conversations all about. His creating relationships people here this and
- 2:09:57Speaker 1: and then hear our conversation and your fan bras who
- 2:10:00Speaker 1: hopefully great some more followers. But more importantly, it's creating
- 2:10:03Speaker 1: relationships and creating a brain awareness of who is exactly
- 2:10:07Speaker 1: is Glenn Robinson the third beyond basketball and beyond basketball,
- 2:10:10Speaker 1: you're a person who cares about making other people's lives
- 2:10:13Speaker 1: better that are not directly tied to you. They're not
- 2:10:16Speaker 1: your cousins, ain't your aunt, nature sustain your brother, ain't
- 2:10:18Speaker 1: your child or your girlfriend or your wife. They're just
- 2:10:21Speaker 1: people that you know need a helping hand. And we
- 2:10:27Speaker 1: were at the University of Michigan, my brother, there are
- 2:10:30Speaker 1: a lot of people over there with that can help
- 2:10:33Speaker 1: you with this because it's it's phenomenal and you are
- 2:10:36Speaker 1: very articulate man. And you can talk. Brother. I don't
- 2:10:40Speaker 1: know if anybody told you, but you can talk. Man.
- 2:10:42Speaker 1: You know you just need to go and realize what
- 2:10:45Speaker 1: I just told you and just keep talking. Glynn, Just
- 2:10:49Speaker 1: keep talking, brother, I'm keep talking. Brother. I'm telling you, Man,
- 2:10:54Speaker 1: I'm way impressed with you. Brother, I do so if
- 2:10:57Speaker 1: you don't have to drill another basketball, if you keep talking,
- 2:11:00Speaker 1: you're gonna be making way more money just because your
- 2:11:03Speaker 1: ability to talk than your ability to drible. I'm just
- 2:11:06Speaker 1: gonna tell you that, believe that bleed up the passion
- 2:11:09Speaker 1: that I hear and the ability to articulate who you
- 2:11:13Speaker 1: could be in life. You are impressive. Man. I I
- 2:11:17Speaker 1: can I can only say that to you verbally because
- 2:11:21Speaker 1: of the fact that you have to believe that yourself.
- 2:11:23Speaker 1: You have to wow man. Man, I tell you I
- 2:11:27Speaker 1: love this show. I love I love I love reading
- 2:11:30Speaker 1: what they said A diamond and the rough. You see
- 2:11:32Speaker 1: your diamond and the rough? Brother. I just look. No,
- 2:11:36Speaker 1: You'll be walking around and you see something just sparkle
- 2:11:38Speaker 1: on the ground and go, what's that? You know? I
- 2:11:41Speaker 1: looked down there, what's that? That's the third picked them
- 2:11:44Speaker 1: up do something. We're gonna do something. Love you, man,
- 2:11:51Speaker 1: I love you, Man, I love your brother. Angels are real, indeed,
- 2:11:57Speaker 1: man helping fathers become barrel in fatherhood and helping families
- 2:12:02Speaker 1: without one. Founded by Glenn Robinson the Third Glenn, my man,
- 2:12:06Speaker 1: I'm telling your brother, as God is my witness, You're
- 2:12:11Speaker 1: gonna make way more money talking than drippling in your
- 2:12:14Speaker 1: life because you care about people and you want to
- 2:12:18Speaker 1: make a difference in people's lives. And it all starts
- 2:12:21Speaker 1: with your ability to think and articulate. And you do
- 2:12:24Speaker 1: it very well. You just haven't accepted it yet. Accepted. Man,
- 2:12:29Speaker 1: Gonna go for it, brother, gonna go for it. You
- 2:12:32Speaker 1: walk on that damn University music camping with a with

- 2:12:58Speaker 1: you for coming on this show, Glenn, and we were
- 2:13:00Speaker 1: will be in touch man, because like I tell you, man,
- 2:13:02Speaker 1: to hear somebody like you talk and you're young because
- 2:13:06Speaker 1: I didn't. I didn't figure out, because I didn't figure
- 2:13:07Speaker 1: out my my success path until I was in my forties.
- 2:13:10Speaker 1: And believe me, I had a lot of Mercedes bends
- 2:13:13Speaker 1: and a lot of big houses along the way, a
- 2:13:15Speaker 1: lot of good times and a lot of times I
- 2:13:17Speaker 1: wish I wouldn't have participated in. But they were all
