- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. Tragedy strikes swiftly and
- 0:46suddenly in the connected world in which we find ourselves.
- 0:49We do not have to look far to see calamity.
- 0:53What should our response be when we observe the next family
- 0:55ripped apart by an untimely death?
- 0:58The next city ravaged by a storm.
- 1:01The next nation laid to waste by a cruel leader.
- 1:03Or a famine. Or a virus.
- 1:06I remember when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans.
- 1:09In the aftermath, it was not uncommon to hear a fellow church
- 1:11member comment on God's judgement of the evil that took
- 1:14place in that city, or to hear that the hurricane represented
- 1:17God's wrath on a nation in moral decline.
- 1:21In either case, God was judging evil, and the evil ones were
- 1:24being destroyed. But in Luke 13, one through 5,
- 1:28that's not quite the explanation Jesus gives for tragedy.
- 1:32Listen to this passage. Now on that very occasion there
- 1:35were some present who reported to him about the Galileans whose
- 1:38blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
- 1:41And Jesus responded and said to them, Do you think that these
- 1:44Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans
- 1:47just because they have suffered this fate?
- 1:50No, I tell you, but unless you repent, you will all likewise
- 1:53perish. Or do you think that those 18 on
- 1:56whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them were worse
- 1:59offenders than all the other people who live in Jerusalem?
- 2:02No, I tell you, but unless you repent, you will all likewise
- 2:05perish. We see here people coming to
- 2:08Jesus, wondering how he would interpret the sudden death of a
- 2:12group of Galileans. In Jesus reply you can hear what
- 2:16they expected him to say. They were awaiting a good
- 2:18riddance, or these were evil men who had it coming.
- 2:22Jesus doesn't go there. In fact, the only comment he
- 2:26makes about the slain Galileans is that they were no worse than
- 2:29any other Galileans. They were no more separated from
- 2:32God than any other Sinner. Jesus goes on.
- 2:35No, I tell you, but unless you repent, you will all likewise
- 2:39perish. Jesus makes the same point in
- 2:41reminding the group of another tragedy with which they were
- 2:44familiar, a tower falling and killing eighteen people.
- 2:48He uses the tragedy to remind his listeners that time is short
- 2:52and judgement is coming, so they should repent.
- 2:56Listen, the next tragedy, local, national, global is coming.
- 3:02We live in a broken world where calamity is inevitable.
- 3:05We must respond not with worldly wisdom or with Pharisaical, I
- 3:10told you so. Respond as Christ exhorts us to
- 3:14repent. Allow these terrible events to
- 3:16move us to repentance, to remind us that life is short and
- 3:20eternity is long. And in the same way, call others
- 3:23to repentance. Preach the gospel boldly and
- 3:26without fear. God has numbered the days of
- 3:29each of our lives. It wasn't your life that was
- 3:32snuffed out in the most recent catastrophe.
- 3:34Praise God. But there is coming a day when
- 3:36each one of us will be called to account for our lives.
- 3:39Do not wait until it's too late to repent.
- 3:43Do not waste your fleeting life on what's passing away.
- 3:46Live for the eternal. Allow the brokenness of this
- 3:49world to draw you nearer to the perfect Savior.
