- 0:00Acts chapter 16. Paul came also to Derby and to
- 0:03Lystra, and a disciple was there named Timothy, the son of a
- 0:06Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek, and
- 0:09he was well spoken of by the brethren who were in Lystra and
- 0:11Iconium. Paul wanted this man to go with
- 0:14him, and he took him and circumcised him, because of the
- 0:16Jews who were in those parts, but they all knew that his
- 0:19father was a Greek. Now while they were passing
- 0:21through the cities, they were delivering the decrees which had
- 0:23been decided upon by the apostles and elders who were in
- 0:26Jerusalem for them to observe. So the churches were being
- 0:29strengthened in the faith and were increasing in number daily.
- 0:33They passed through the Phrygian and Galatian region, having been
- 0:35forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the Word in Asia.
- 0:38And after they came to migia they were trying to go into
- 0:41Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them, and
- 0:44passing by Migia they came down to Troas.
- 0:46A vision appeared to Paul in the night.
- 0:48A man of Macedonia was standing and appealing to him and saying,
- 0:51Come over to Macedonia and help us.
- 0:54When he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go into
- 0:56Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the
- 0:59gospel to them. So putting out to sea from Troas
- 1:03we ran a straight course to Samothrace, and on the day
- 1:07following to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is a
- 1:10leading city of the district of Macedonia, a Roman colony.
- 1:14And we were staying in the city for some days.
- 1:16And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to a Riverside,
- 1:20where we were supposing that there would be a place of
- 1:22prayer. And we sat down and began
- 1:24speaking to the women who had assembled, a woman named Lydia
- 1:27from the city of Thyatira, a cellar of purple fabrics.
- 1:31A worshipper of God was listening, and the Lord opened
- 1:34her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul.
- 1:37And when she and her household had been baptized, she urged us,
- 1:40saying, If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come
- 1:43into my house and stay. And she prevailed upon us.
- 1:46It happened that as we were going to the place of prayer, a
- 1:48slave girl having a spirit of divination met us who was
- 1:52bringing her master's much profit by fortune telling
- 1:55following after Paul and us. She kept crying out saying,
- 1:58These men are bond servants of the Most High God, who are
- 2:00proclaiming to you the way of salvation.
- 2:03She continued doing this for many days, but Paul was greatly
- 2:06annoyed and turned and said to the Spirit, I command you in the
- 2:09name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.
- 2:11And it came out at that very moment.
- 2:14But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone,
- 2:17they seized Paul and Silas, and dragged them into the
- 2:19marketplace before the authorities.
- 2:21When they had brought them to the chief magistrates, they
- 2:23said, These men are throwing our city into confusion, being Jews,
- 2:27and are proclaiming customs which it is not lawful for us to
- 2:30accept or to observe, being Romans.
- 2:33The crowd rose up together against them, and the chief
- 2:35magistrates tore their robes off them, and proceeded to order
- 2:38them to be beaten with rods. When they had struck them with
- 2:41many blows, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to
- 2:44guard them securely, and he, having received such a command,
- 2:47threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the
- 2:50stocks. But at about midnight Paul and
- 2:53Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the
- 2:56prisoners were listening to them, and suddenly there came a
- 2:59great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison house
- 3:02were shaken, and immediately all the doors were opened and
- 3:05everyone's chains were unfastened.
- 3:07When the jailer awoke and saw the prison doors opened, he drew
- 3:10his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the
- 3:13prisoners had escaped. But Paul cried out with a loud
- 3:16voice, saying, Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.
- 3:19And he called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with
- 3:21fear he fell down before Paul and Silas.
- 3:24And after he brought them out, he said, Sirs, what must I do to
- 3:27be saved? They said, Believe in the Lord
- 3:30Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.
- 3:33And they spoke the word of the Lord to him, together with all
- 3:36who were in his house. And he took them that very hour
- 3:38of night and washed their wounds.
- 3:40And immediately he was baptized, he and all his household, and he
- 3:44brought them into his house and set food before them, and
- 3:47rejoiced greatly, having believed in God with his whole
- 3:49household. Now when day came, the chief
- 3:53magistrates sent their policemen saying, release those men.
- 3:56And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, The chief
- 3:59magistrates have sent to release you therefore come out now and
- 4:02go in peace. But Paul said to them, They have
- 4:05beaten us in public without trial men who are Romans and
- 4:08have thrown us into prison, and now they are sending us away
- 4:11secretly. No, indeed, but let them come
- 4:14themselves and bring us out. The policemen reported these
- 4:17words to the chief magistrates. They were afraid when they heard
- 4:20that they were Romans, and they came and appealed to them.
- 4:22When they had brought them out, they kept begging them to leave
- 4:24the city. They went out of the prison and
- 4:27entered the House of Lydia, and when they saw the brethren, they
- 4:30encouraged them and departed.
