- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfle Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome to Connecting the Dots. It's great
- 0:17to have you with us on this Thursday, August
- 0:1928th, 2025. Absolutely. Thanks for tuning in.
- 0:22We're here to help you make sense of the tech
- 0:24world. All right. Let's quickly check in on what's
- 0:26happening outside the tech bubble. Nationally,
- 0:29there's some rough weather, heavy rain, and flash
- 0:31flooding threats across the central US and down
- 0:33into the lower Mississippi Valley. Yeah, and
- 0:35up north, quite the opposite wintry weather,
- 0:37even some ice potential in northern Alaska. Looks
- 0:40like south central Alaska is also in for some
- 0:42long duration rain and strong winds through Friday.
- 0:45Meanwhile, here in Sacramento, it's looking like
- 0:47a classic late summer day. Sunny skies, high,
- 0:51getting up to about 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Nice.
- 0:54Definitely warm. Okay. Quick look at the markets
- 0:56before we dive into tech. Yesterday's close.
- 0:58The Dow Jones finished at 45 ,565 .23. That was
- 1:03up about 147 points, or 0 .33%. And the S &P
- 1:06500 also closed in the green at 6 ,481 .40, up
- 1:11just over 19 points, about 0 .30%. Bitcoin's
- 1:14having a strong day, too. Opened around 111 ,261,
- 1:17closed near 113 ,352. That's a jump of over $2
- 1:22,000, almost 1 .9%. up pretty active definitely
- 1:25and some good news closer to home for baseball
- 1:27fans the San Francisco Giants took on the Chicago
- 1:30Cubs yesterday August 27th and they won nice
- 1:34decisive victory 12 to 3 yes great to see Carson
- 1:38wisdom hunt got the win on the mound and Rafael
- 1:40Devers had a monster game for the Giants went
- 1:424 for 4 with two home runs just fantastic love
- 1:45to see that kind of performance Okay, so shifting
- 1:49gears now into our main focus, the Morningstar
- 1:52Tech Report, we're connecting the dots on some
- 1:54major moves in the tech industry today. Right.
- 1:57And our focus today is really on Nvidia, a company
- 1:59that's just central to, well, pretty much everything
- 2:01happening in AI right now. We've got three key
- 2:04stories pulled from our internal SNARFL report
- 2:07that paint a really interesting picture. OK,
- 2:09let's kick off with the first one. This involves
- 2:10Nvidia and the massive Chinese market. Earlier
- 2:14this year, they got hit with a ban preventing
- 2:15them from selling their specialized H20 AI chips
- 2:18in China. And that wasn't a small hit, right?
- 2:20We're talking serious money. It cost them an
- 2:22estimated $2 .5 billion in sales just in the
- 2:25first quarter. Yeah, and projected losses for
- 2:27Q2 were even bigger, maybe around $8 billion,
- 2:30a huge chunk of revenue. Exactly. So the big
- 2:33news now is that Nvidia seems to be on the verge
- 2:36of resuming those sales. Reports suggest the
- 2:39U .S. government has given assurances that export
- 2:41licenses will be granted for these H20 chips.
- 2:45It's kind of a quick turnaround, isn't it? From
- 2:47a ban costing billions to getting the green light.
- 2:51Seemingly. Well, what's interesting is these
- 2:53h20 chips were specifically designed around the
- 2:56US restrictions that were already in place So
- 2:58it's not a total policy reversal more like an
- 3:01approval for a chip tailored for this specific
- 3:04restricted environment Okay, so they engineered
- 3:07a solution specifically to meet the rules and
- 3:10now it looks like that solution might be approved
- 3:12precisely It suggests maybe more calibrated approach
- 3:14from the US government now So what does this
- 3:16mean for Nvidia beyond just getting back some
- 3:18of that lost revenue? How significant? is this
- 3:21potential return? Oh, it's massive for them.
- 3:23Analysts are talking about potentially recouping
- 3:25somewhere between $10 billion and $15 billion
- 3:29just from China in the second half of this year
- 3:31alone. Yeah, and that could push their total
- 3:33revenue for fiscal 2026 towards maybe $19 .5
- 3:37billion to $20 .5 billion. It's absolutely crucial
- 3:40for sustaining the incredible growth rate they've
- 3:42been on. And it's not just any market, right?
- 3:44China is huge in computing and AI research. It's
- 3:47the second largest computing market globally.
- 3:50And get this, it's home to roughly half of the
- 3:52world's AI researchers. So for Nvidia, access
- 3:55isn't just about sales figures, it's about being
- 3:57part of that innovation ecosystem. Right. So
- 3:59losing access wasn't just a financial hit. It
- 4:02potentially slowed things down, cut them off
- 4:04from talent and ideas. Exactly. And for the wider
- 4:07tech industry, this might signal, you know, a
- 4:09subtle shift in U .S.-China tech trade dynamics.
- 4:13It also gives Chinese companies, who frankly
- 4:15often prefer Nvidia's chips, a bit of breathing
- 4:17room while their own domestic tech develops.
- 4:19It really underlines how much these big geopolitical
- 4:22decisions ripple through the economy and affect
- 4:25these major tech players. Policy changes and
- 4:28suddenly billions are back on the table. It shows
- 4:31how fast things can move, but it's not quite
- 4:34a done deal yet. There's a pretty significant
- 4:36complication which brings us to our second story.
- 4:39Ah, okay. There's always a catch, isn't there?
- 4:42What's the wrinkle here? The wrinkle is this.
- 4:45The US government has apparently expressed an
- 4:48expectation that's the word being used, that
- 4:51it should receive 15 % of the revenue from these
- 4:53licensed H20 chip sales to China. Wait, 15 %?
- 4:57The government expects a 15 % cut of the revenue.
- 5:00Yeah. Just expects it. Is that even like a formal
- 5:03rule? Well, that's the crux of the issue. According
- 5:05to NVIDIA's CFO Colette Kress, There's no actual
- 5:09regulation written down anywhere that requires
- 5:11this. It's just an expectation. And crucially,
- 5:15Nvidia hasn't actually shipped any H20s under
- 5:17licenses that include this condition. They've
- 5:19basically said, hold on a minute. I bet they
- 5:21have. What are their specific concerns? Besides
- 5:24the obvious hit to their profits. They're worried
- 5:27about potential lawsuits, naturally. Increased
- 5:29costs obviously and they feel it could really
- 5:32hurt their competitive position Plus they pointed
- 5:35out that the US Constitution actually bans export
- 5:38taxes, which this arguably resembles So it sounds
- 5:42legally questionable potentially unconstitutional
- 5:45and there's no actual regulation backing it up
- 5:47yet pretty much It's a very unusual situation.
- 5:50It's like you said before agreeing to buy a car,
- 5:52but the dealership says Oh, by the way, we expect
- 5:54a 15 % cut of your earnings for the next year
- 5:58Details TBD. You wouldn't sign that. Exactly.
- 6:01It creates huge uncertainty. That 15 % would
- 6:04obviously bite into their margins significantly.
- 6:06But it also makes investors nervous, and Chinese
- 6:09customers might hesitate to place big orders
- 6:11until they know the final terms. Which is probably
- 6:13why Nvidia left these potential H20 sales completely
- 6:17out of their financial forecast for the next
- 6:19quarter, right? They just can't bank on it yet.
- 6:21Correct. They flagged these geopolitical issues
- 6:23as the reason. This whole 15 % expectation is
- 6:26the geopolitical issue holding things up right
- 6:28now. It feels like a new kind of government -corporate
- 6:31negotiation, almost. Setting a potentially tricky
- 6:34precedent for other tech exports in sensitive
- 6:36areas. It really could. If this stands, does
- 6:39it apply to other companies? Other technologies?
- 6:42It's a big question mark. It just shows that
- 6:44even when you think you have a green light, these
- 6:46regulatory and political layers can add significant
- 6:49risk and delay. Fascinating stuff. Okay, so that's
- 6:51the complex situation with the H20 chips. But
- 6:54there's another quite different financial story
- 6:57about NVIDIA that also caught our eye in the
- 6:59Morningstar report. Yes, and this one is purely
- 7:02about shrewd financial strategy, it seems. In
- 7:04their second quarter results, NVIDIA reported
- 7:07something called net other income. And the number
- 7:09was, well, Staggering. How staggering are we
- 7:12talking about? $2 .2 billion. Billion. With a
- 7:15B from other income, not from selling chips.
- 7:18Exactly. $2 .2 billion. And the report stated
- 7:21this gain was primarily driven by gains in a
- 7:24publicly held equity security. Okay. Decoding
- 7:27the finance speak. They made a ton of money on
- 7:30a stock investment. Which one? CoreWeave. Remember
- 7:33them. The AI cloud provider. One of the big players
- 7:37offering access to guess what? Nvidia's GPUs.
- 7:41Ah, CoreWeave, right. The ones provided the infrastructure
- 7:44that uses Nvidia's hardware. So, Nvidia invested
- 7:47in them? They did. And during Nvidia's fiscal
- 7:49second quarter, CoreWeave's valuation apparently
- 7:52exploded, went up by 175%. So, Nvidia's investment
- 7:55just ballooned in value. Wow. So, they're not
- 7:59just selling the gear, they're investing directly
- 8:00in the companies that are successfully using
- 8:02that gear. That's... pretty smart. It's incredibly
- 8:05smart. It shows they're not just a hardware company,
- 8:07they're building an entire ecosystem and they're
- 8:09investing strategically within it. It's like
- 8:11selling the picks and shovels during a gold rush
- 8:13and also taking a stake in the most successful
- 8:15mining operations. That's a great analogy. And
- 8:18that $2 .2 billion, that's significantly boosted
- 8:21their overall profit for the quarter, didn't
- 8:23it? Hugely. It was a major contributor to their
- 8:25overall net income, which was a mind -blowing
- 8:27$26 billion for Q2. This core weave game provides
- 8:32a really nice cushion against uncertainties like,
- 8:34you know, the whole China H20 situation we were
- 8:36just talking about. It shows remarkable financial
- 8:39diversification. and resilience. You could almost
- 8:43say their investment arm alone is performing
- 8:45like a top -tier company. You really could. Someone
- 8:47pointed out their asset management function,
- 8:49just based on this, would rank among the most
- 8:51profitable companies in the S &P 500 on its own.
- 8:54That's wild. What does this tell us about the
- 8:56broader AI landscape? It highlights the absolutely
- 9:00explosive growth happening in AI infrastructure.
- 9:03Companies like CoreWeave that provide the computing
- 9:05power are scaling incredibly fast because the
- 9:09demand for GPUs is just insatiable right now.
- 9:12And Nvidia is perfectly positioned to benefit
- 9:14both by selling them the chips and by investing
- 9:17in their success. It really paints a picture
- 9:19of Nvidia playing the game on multiple levels.
- 9:22Hardware dominance, strategic ecosystem investment,
- 9:26and navigating these complex global trade issues.
- 9:29all at the same time. It's a master class really.
- 9:31It shows how companies in these cutting edge
- 9:33fields need to be thinking way beyond just their
- 9:36core product. Partnerships, investments, policy,
- 9:39it's all interconnected. Absolutely. So let's
- 9:42quickly recap the dots we connected today for
- 9:44you. First we looked at Nvidia's potential big
- 9:47return to the Chinese market with their H20 chips.
- 9:50A move that could bring in billions, but hinges
- 9:52on final US approval. Then we dug into the major
- 9:55sticking point. That proposed, and frankly unprecedented,
- 9:5915 % revenue commission the U .S. government
- 10:02apparently expects, creating significant uncertainty
- 10:05and potential legal hurdles. And finally, we
- 10:08saw Nvidia's other financial engine making a
- 10:11massive $2 .2 billion gain simply from their
- 10:15investment in CoreWeave, showcasing their strategic
- 10:17position not just as a seller, but as a key investor
- 10:20within the AI ecosystem. Right. These stories
- 10:23together really show that dynamic mix of technology,
- 10:26global politics, and sharp business strategy
- 10:29that's shaping the future of AI and, really,
- 10:31the global economy. Understanding these pieces
- 10:33helps make sense of the bigger picture. It reminds
- 10:36us that tech progress isn't just about the inventions
- 10:38themselves, but also about these intricate webs
- 10:40of finance, policy, and strategic maneuvering
- 10:43happening behind the scenes. Definitely. And
- 10:45it leaves you thinking, you know, as AI and other
- 10:47critical texts advance, how much tighter will
- 10:50that knot between government policy, national
- 10:53interest, and corporate strategy become? What
- 10:56kind of playbook is being written right now?
- 10:58Definitely some food for thought there. We hope
