- 0:00Speaker 1: My next guest is the person I would never slammed
- 0:02Speaker 1: the door on. He's been in the donut making game
- 0:05Speaker 1: for over forty five years. He will gladly state if
- 0:09Speaker 1: you cut him, he will bleed glaze, as in glazed donuts.
- 0:14Speaker 1: He started Cousin Dozen, which is c D for short,
- 0:18Speaker 1: during its twenty four years ago and now has two
- 0:20Speaker 1: locations in Brooklyn, New York and Queens, New York. I've
- 0:24Speaker 1: been to the Brooklyn, New York location. I have pictures
- 0:27Speaker 1: of me eating those donuts, so I am a committed
- 0:31Speaker 1: fan of what he does. He'll be franchising in approximately
- 0:34Speaker 1: a hundred and twenty days. Please worcome the money making
- 0:37Speaker 1: conversation again. I've mad him on like two years. Please
- 0:39Speaker 1: welcome to the money making conversation. My man, Todd Jones. Hey, Sean,
- 0:45Speaker 1: how's it going pretty good? Uh? Oh yeah? Work where
- 0:48Speaker 1: you at? Man, because it's just just by work time
- 0:50Speaker 1: for you. Huh. It definitely is, man. But I got
- 0:54Speaker 1: a bunch of committed people, man that U can handle
- 0:57Speaker 1: the range of the business wide kind of relax of
- 1:00Speaker 1: little bit because you know, like you said, you gotta
- 1:02Speaker 1: have that balance, man. You definitely gotta have that balance.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Now when you say the word work, because you relax
- 1:07Speaker 1: because you're on the phone talking to me promoting your brand.
- 1:09Speaker 1: So that's not really technically relaxing, but in your world
- 1:12Speaker 1: of physically out there because your brand has changed, it
- 1:15Speaker 1: allows you to be able to, as I say, go
- 1:18Speaker 1: out there and seek God opportunities to grow your brand. Correct,
- 1:23Speaker 1: That's that's definitely correct. That's definitely correct. It's it's it's now.
- 1:27Speaker 1: You know, for all those years I've been working, you know,
- 1:30Speaker 1: in the business, now I'm working on the business. It's
- 1:33Speaker 1: a whole different philosophy, whole different perspectives. Um, that's how
- 1:37Speaker 1: you really get both by working on the business. Now,
- 1:40Speaker 1: let's talk about the business. Let's talk about your experience first, okay,
- 1:44Speaker 1: because you know nobody wakes up just making donuts. I
- 1:49Speaker 1: know I can't. Yeah, I would be honest with you.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Is that I am? You know I have Krispy Kream
- 1:55Speaker 1: app on my phone. I will tell you that, you know, so,
- 1:57Speaker 1: so I can just clicking in and I win the
- 2:00Speaker 1: lights on and to say the Atlantic or wherever I
- 2:03Speaker 1: and I will go there because I love blade donors,
- 2:06Speaker 1: I don't like to do I'm going to be honest
- 2:08Speaker 1: with I don't like the donors with all those little
- 2:09Speaker 1: food food with a little chocolate covering it, a little
- 2:12Speaker 1: be done in a little raising brands and no, no, no,
- 2:16Speaker 1: give me Blade donut. I love cake donors too, now,
- 2:21Speaker 1: but those Blades donuts at the wall, I'm winning. I'm winning. Well, well,
- 2:30Speaker 1: let me just shout out Kristy Cream Sublime Donuts out
- 2:33Speaker 1: there in the land, and all those mom and top
- 2:36Speaker 1: donor shops out there, I'm about donor kind of saw them.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I'm the ambassador donuts. I love all donors. You know,
- 2:42Speaker 1: we all can win such thing as competition. Could you
- 2:45Speaker 1: say competition that that means it's not enough. It's all
- 2:48Speaker 1: about cooperation. I'm in the donut business with all these
- 2:51Speaker 1: other big brands. Uh So, now with that being said,
- 2:57Speaker 1: how did it all start for you in the donor business?
- 3:01Speaker 1: So years ago? Uh my sister worked in the donut
- 3:05Speaker 1: shop called a company too, and it was owned by
- 3:09Speaker 1: three African American men. First time I ever saw African men.
- 3:19Speaker 1: First time I've ever seen three African American men owning something.
- 3:23Speaker 1: And I think that was my inspiration. You know, from there,
- 3:26Speaker 1: I saw them calling the shots, paying the bills, you know,
- 3:30Speaker 1: just being in charge, in charge of the destiny. So
- 3:33Speaker 1: that shop uh was in existence for about three or
- 3:37Speaker 1: four years. Then it closed. And then I started working
- 3:40Speaker 1: for Mom Pop donut shops. And from working from Mom
- 3:43Speaker 1: and Pop down the shops that I eventually landed a
- 3:46Speaker 1: job with the big brand Dunkin Donuts. Worked for them
- 3:51Speaker 1: for twenty years. It was the highest paid baker in
- 3:54Speaker 1: Dunk of Donuts history. I drove a BMW that said,
- 3:57Speaker 1: by Donuts, Rashaan, I was making done. I was gitting it.
- 4:04Speaker 1: So after about twenty years, I was working for one
- 4:08Speaker 1: of the largest Duck of Donor franchises and um, they
- 4:11Speaker 1: decided to sell it to another owner and he decided
- 4:15Speaker 1: I was making too much money. He fired me. Um
- 4:20Speaker 1: and UM give me one week seven's pay and that
- 4:22Speaker 1: was it. And I said, Rashaan, this is never gonna
- 4:26Speaker 1: happen again. Never gonna happen. Aga My daughter was supposed
- 4:29Speaker 1: to be born three months before that, and here I
- 4:31Speaker 1: has with no job. Because I like to read books.
- 4:36Speaker 1: The spirit says, go to bars and nobles, relaxed, going
- 4:40Speaker 1: to bars and nobles, walk past magaizine racks. Something told
- 4:43Speaker 1: me to stop. I stopped. I look up Entrepreneur magazine.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Can't make this up for Shane. I opened up Entrepreneur
- 4:51Speaker 1: magazine and right there was a donor machine. I said,
- 4:55Speaker 1: God to say no more. I never ever looked back.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Mh you open up the magazine. It is, yeah, the
- 5:04Speaker 1: donate machine, the exact donate machine that I'm using. State yep, wow, wow, yeah,
- 5:13Speaker 1: you know I when you look back on it, he
- 5:15Speaker 1: just gave you the push. Oh yeah, it was. It wasn't.
- 5:19Speaker 1: It wasn't a nice push, but it was as yeah,
- 5:24Speaker 1: has has I've not been fired? I probably have been.
- 5:29Speaker 1: I probably have been a dunk of doing a franchise
- 5:32Speaker 1: V probably probably. But that wasn't what God has for me.
- 5:38Speaker 1: He had for me to on my own franchise and
- 5:41Speaker 1: be the franchise ear who sells franchises to other people. Right,
- 5:46Speaker 1: So let's talk about let's talk about the name. How
- 5:49Speaker 1: did you come up with the name? And then we're
- 5:50Speaker 1: gonna talk about the product, and then we're gonna talk
- 5:53Speaker 1: about franchising. Let's talk about how how did you come
- 5:55Speaker 1: up with the name? So all idea is come from God.
- 6:00Speaker 1: H Right, I just happened to be open enough to
- 6:04Speaker 1: receive that that was my gift from God. The name
- 6:07Speaker 1: cousin doesn't anything I've ever come up with, any idea
- 6:09Speaker 1: of it ever come up with. I give all glory
- 6:11Speaker 1: to God because that's where it comes from. So you
- 6:16Speaker 1: know how it happens. You know, I go to sleep,
- 6:19Speaker 1: I wake up and it's like because it doesn't wow,
- 6:22Speaker 1: thank you God, I love that's how guess what and
- 6:28Speaker 1: you're accepting of it. That's that's that's the beauty. You know,
- 6:30Speaker 1: a lot of people, you know, a good thought to him,
- 6:32Speaker 1: come to him and they're on their third thought. You know, well,
- 6:35Speaker 1: it's not like that's you know, I always tell people
- 6:38Speaker 1: ride that first thought. That's the thought. You ride that
- 6:41Speaker 1: third thought of the first thought really is wasting of
- 6:45Speaker 1: your thoughts. Okay, so go back to the first thought.
- 6:48Speaker 1: So cousin doesn't came to you said, that's the name
- 6:51Speaker 1: of my business exactly. And it fits perfectly because of
- 6:56Speaker 1: the fact that when you have a cousin's don't experience
- 7:00Speaker 1: it's like family. You know, when you come to the shop, Hey, cousin,
- 7:03Speaker 1: how you doing it right? And what this experience to
- 7:05Speaker 1: be family oriented? Yes, sir, yes, sir, Because the donut
- 7:10Speaker 1: is a donut is a donut, but were a experience.
- 7:14Speaker 1: We do what we call either tainment, which means you
- 7:19Speaker 1: can see the donor being made. You could smell a
- 7:21Speaker 1: donor being made, you could taste the made. We need
- 7:24Speaker 1: all these senses. It's an experience. I love this guy.
- 7:29Speaker 1: I love it because he got me hungry. I'm hungry.
- 7:32Speaker 1: I'm waiting on a donor and you're in New York City.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Now here's the thing about it. This day you said,
- 7:36Speaker 1: you create an interactive experience, like you said, Peter tam
- 7:41Speaker 1: you can smell it and taste it and see it
- 7:44Speaker 1: and you create and what you also have a signature
- 7:46Speaker 1: dona is the final cake, which is another one of
- 7:49Speaker 1: my favorite carnival is desserts. Is the final cake. So
- 7:54Speaker 1: tell me exactly what it is a final donor because
- 7:57Speaker 1: it almnna feels like it's a ben kind of like okay.
- 8:01Speaker 1: So my partner Eric Santiago, who's affectively known as easy Glaze,
- 8:06Speaker 1: were always brain storm and stuff, and we said we
- 8:10Speaker 1: need to have a unique donut that can like signify
- 8:14Speaker 1: who we are. So I started thinking, Brooklyn, I'm like,
- 8:17Speaker 1: wait a minute, Cody Allen, So he looks at me
- 8:21Speaker 1: he goes, yeah, Cody Allen and at the same moment
- 8:24Speaker 1: we go, oh no, Kate, I can put it together.
- 8:27Speaker 1: We go funnel cake donut bingo. That was it. So
- 8:32Speaker 1: it's a combination, just like a cronut as a Croissan
- 8:35Speaker 1: donu together with a funnel cake donut as a funnel
- 8:38Speaker 1: cake and a donut together. You look your sinister with
- 8:47Speaker 1: your food did donut? I love it? Just if you
- 8:57Speaker 1: if you're ever in Brooklyn, you gotta go buy because
- 9:00Speaker 1: you you are are You're both locations. Now. You spend
- 9:02Speaker 1: most of your time at the Brooklyn location, by the way,
- 9:06Speaker 1: actually because we're building this franchise. I'm you know sometimes
- 9:11Speaker 1: that Brookelyn sometimes the Queen's you know, it depends on
- 9:13Speaker 1: you know, what I'm doing for the day. But um,
- 9:16Speaker 1: usually you can find me in Brooklyn. So what exactly
- 9:20Speaker 1: and tell everybody the exact location in Brooklyn. So the
- 9:24Speaker 1: exact location is at the City Point Mall. It used
- 9:26Speaker 1: to be the Albie Square Mall back in the days
- 9:29Speaker 1: at four five Alby Square West down in the food hall,
- 9:34Speaker 1: right next to Trader Joe's. And the Queen's location is
- 9:37Speaker 1: that the queens sent them all nine queens Boulevard right
- 9:45Speaker 1: there because because you come in you said, you're kind
- 9:46Speaker 1: of like in the back right because I remember when
- 9:48Speaker 1: that you come down escalator in Brooklyn, but right to
- 9:52Speaker 1: the left of the escalator and then queens come down
- 9:56Speaker 1: escalator and if you don't know, conno sue it like
- 9:58Speaker 1: I am just smell and I swear you go right
- 10:03Speaker 1: over there to this man and he I don't know
- 10:05Speaker 1: who's there now some hopefully somebody is just as enthusiastic
- 10:09Speaker 1: as he is, because he put everything he's said on
- 10:11Speaker 1: this interview. That's him. You know, it's a passion. It's
- 10:16Speaker 1: so funny when he gives you done, he watches you.
- 10:19Speaker 1: He wants to see are you gonna have the same
- 10:23Speaker 1: enthusiast him for eating it that he had making it?
- 10:27Speaker 1: And that I'll tell yourself as that's what I want. See.
- 10:31Speaker 1: I don't like anybody to just give me some food
- 10:33Speaker 1: walk away. Sometimes I like for them go yeah, this
- 10:36Speaker 1: is really really good because because sometimes that's the only
- 10:38Speaker 1: person you can share with when you buy yourself is
- 10:41Speaker 1: the person that gives you the food, and so you
- 10:43Speaker 1: have to worry about the talk talking those doughnuts. He
- 10:46Speaker 1: gonna go, Okay, what do you think now he rubs
- 10:48Speaker 1: his hands sometimes. Yeah, yeah, you know that this this
- 10:53Speaker 1: whole game plan is about you feeling good about the
- 10:55Speaker 1: food that he makes. When we come back on the
- 10:57Speaker 1: next break, we're gonna talk about these grown folks, don't ups,
- 11:00Speaker 1: donors for grown ups. See see see see he got
- 11:04Speaker 1: a little bit for everybody. He got donors for the kids,
- 11:06Speaker 1: donor for the kids are bigger than kids. Then he
- 11:10Speaker 1: got donors for the grown ups. Be back with more
- 11:12Speaker 1: money making conversations. Hi, just ru Sean McDonald, and you're
- 11:16Speaker 1: listening to money making conversation. As I've told many people
- 11:19Speaker 1: money making conversations to show where I'll bring CEOs, small entrepreneurs,
- 11:24Speaker 1: business owners CEOs as I said earlier, as well as
- 11:27Speaker 1: industry decision makers and celebrities, because celebrities are entrepreneurs. On
- 11:32Speaker 1: the phone is my man. He's uh, the owner of
- 11:35Speaker 1: a cousin dozen c D. Twenty four years just walking
- 11:39Speaker 1: in the bookstore, open the magazine donor machines sitting right there,
- 11:45Speaker 1: and he's been using that donor machine every since to
- 11:48Speaker 1: build his brand, to build his business. Now, see I
- 11:51Speaker 1: don't drink so so as soon as I went there,
- 11:54Speaker 1: he watching me eat these donors, right, And he know
- 11:56Speaker 1: I was putting on the show too, because he puts
- 11:58Speaker 1: in his little box that you can like fold the tops.
- 12:00Speaker 1: It's like a little box as you might see, like
- 12:02Speaker 1: a Chinese food type box, because they're a little they're
- 12:04Speaker 1: small donuts and so, which is really deceiving because you
- 12:08Speaker 1: you think you're not eating much and you wind up
- 12:10Speaker 1: eating like a dozen doughnuts. You know, It's like it's
- 12:12Speaker 1: like when you eat donuts holes, right, Todd, You know
- 12:14Speaker 1: you you really are really really don't realize that many
- 12:16Speaker 1: donuts you've eaten when you're eating these doughnuts holes. So
- 12:20Speaker 1: these little many doughnuts, which are fantastic. So then you're
- 12:23Speaker 1: telling means you gotta try my grown up donuts. That's
- 12:27Speaker 1: what you're talking about. To tell everybody talk about the
- 12:30Speaker 1: grown up donuts. Okay, So first of all, I want
- 12:34Speaker 1: to talk about as far as what the donuts being Many.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Our tagline is Many is a new skinny only thirty
- 12:40Speaker 1: one calories a donut. Yeah, I love it. I love
- 12:46Speaker 1: Many is the new skinny only thirty one calories per donut?
- 12:52Speaker 1: Correct as donors ten donuts right there, three teams. I'm
- 12:56Speaker 1: still doing good see again again. I love this man.
- 13:01Speaker 1: He's a marketing genius. He has the tag phrases, he
- 13:04Speaker 1: has the enthusiasm. Now he has the liquor donuts. Yes,
- 13:10Speaker 1: we have the donuts for grown us. The first time
- 13:12Speaker 1: I ever announced doing that was that I was doing
- 13:17Speaker 1: the Dream Project in Atlanta and they were doing a
- 13:20Speaker 1: pitch contest, and um, I just came up with that.
- 13:23Speaker 1: That was an idea that came up about donuts for
- 13:27Speaker 1: grown ups, alcohol infused donuts. And the first donor I
- 13:30Speaker 1: ever talked about was sar Rock Donus. Yes, I was
- 13:35Speaker 1: announced that I was doing rock Donuts, and everybody knows us,
- 13:38Speaker 1: what is that? What does that? Never I'll never forget
- 13:42Speaker 1: how this happened was Good Friday when I announced it
- 13:45Speaker 1: on stage. Rashaan, Do you know that Easter Sunday morning,
- 13:49Speaker 1: I get a call from Puffy's people Puff Daddy and said, hey,
- 13:54Speaker 1: we heard about these rock donuts. Bring him up to
- 13:57Speaker 1: my office. I was blown away, you like blown away,
- 14:01Speaker 1: blown away, So of course I go up to the office.
- 14:05Speaker 1: I was invited up there by one of Puffy's people,
- 14:08Speaker 1: Erica Pittman, and she took him upstairs. I hit up
- 14:12Speaker 1: hit her up and asked how did they like it?
- 14:14Speaker 1: They said they loved them. So I knew I was
- 14:16Speaker 1: onto something. And you know, I was doing all the
- 14:19Speaker 1: rock donors. Every time they came out with a flavor,
- 14:22Speaker 1: I was doing it. And then I started doing Hennessy donors.
- 14:26Speaker 1: And my tagline for that was Anything's Possible. Many is
- 14:35Speaker 1: the new Skinny Hennessey Possible. Come on, keep talking to yes, sir.
- 14:40Speaker 1: But we started doing We started doing Hennessy donuts, and
- 14:44Speaker 1: a production company came to us and and access to
- 14:47Speaker 1: you know, because they, you know, shoot us doing the
- 14:49Speaker 1: Hennessy donuts. That video they shoted it went viral, and
- 14:53Speaker 1: you know, I started to become known, you know, making
- 14:55Speaker 1: Hennessy donors. I started making pink mascotto donuts. We want
- 14:59Speaker 1: to pry that the Big and the Bad festival doing
- 15:02Speaker 1: Corona drizzled donuts. You know. You know this is me
- 15:08Speaker 1: and and and Easy Glades, my partner. We are thrown
- 15:10Speaker 1: as a dynamic donut like we get these donuts in.
- 15:18Speaker 1: This is this is crazy. I'm talking to Todd Jones.
- 15:20Speaker 1: He's the owner of the operator of Cousins. Cousins doesn't
- 15:25Speaker 1: he's a show. He's a show. Because of the fact
- 15:27Speaker 1: that he loves what he does. And if you ever
- 15:30Speaker 1: around anybody that loves what they what they do, whether
- 15:33Speaker 1: it's a person behind a barbecue grillers, it's like watching
- 15:36Speaker 1: your your uncle or your brother who can really barbecue
- 15:39Speaker 1: in your backyard, just talking no and just talking. Come
- 15:43Speaker 1: over and get this barbecue. Come on, get the donuts.
- 15:45Speaker 1: That's all he said. Come on, get do go. Yeah,
- 15:47Speaker 1: you don't know no about these donuts. You have one
- 15:49Speaker 1: of my donuts. I mean he's skinny, all that good stuff.
- 15:51Speaker 1: That's the beauty of what you do. So let's talk
- 15:53Speaker 1: about a couple of things that what is the overall
- 15:56Speaker 1: vision of c D So the world vision of Cousins
- 16:01Speaker 1: doesn't is this, This is a statement, This is a vision.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Cousins Doesn't. Is the fastest growing franchise in franchise history.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I stand by that. I declare that, and that's the
- 16:16Speaker 1: vision that was given to me by God. No matter
- 16:19Speaker 1: what's going on, that is the vision and we will
- 16:22Speaker 1: accomplish that. And what makes what will make your your
- 16:26Speaker 1: franchises are successful or what what's the because you know
- 16:30Speaker 1: you you you you're a marketeer, Okay, you have great products?
- 16:34Speaker 1: And then all of a sudden, you know, are you
- 16:37Speaker 1: are you gonna expand that menu to like some people
- 16:40Speaker 1: go they have shapes, they have milk, all the ice cream.
- 16:44Speaker 1: So what is the menu of of Cousins doesn't Cousins
- 16:50Speaker 1: doesn't gonna sell just two products. It's all about focus.
- 16:53Speaker 1: We're gonna sell drinks and our donuts. We have a
- 16:57Speaker 1: drink called Mama Made Lemonade. We also have a drink
- 17:02Speaker 1: called the Tiger Wool. And I'll explain what the tiger woods.
- 17:06Speaker 1: We don't tag tiger woo, tiger Woo, tiger woo, tagger wood,
- 17:11Speaker 1: tiger woo. You know, people come there and ask for
- 17:16Speaker 1: an o Palmer, which is you know, the lemonade and
- 17:20Speaker 1: iced tea. We got a special zeal Hawaiian nice teath.
- 17:23Speaker 1: So we said we don't do that. We do a
- 17:25Speaker 1: tiger wool. Now it's really tiger woods. But I can't
- 17:28Speaker 1: pay him right now. Yeah, So if you want to woooo,
- 17:37Speaker 1: come that Cousin does. This is beautiful. So let's talk
- 17:42Speaker 1: about the experience about the Viceland show Hustle that you
- 17:46Speaker 1: were on. Oh so um, we happen to be on
- 17:50Speaker 1: Vice Lamb because I did a job for Shade Woods
- 17:53Speaker 1: at five thousand and one. Absolutely yeah, absolutely, yeah, yeah.
- 17:58Speaker 1: I did a job for her in her backyard. She
- 18:00Speaker 1: was having an anniversary party and I'm back there making
- 18:04Speaker 1: you know, Hennessey donuts. You know, everybody's in the front,
- 18:06Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, here comes Marcus, Sammy said,
- 18:11Speaker 1: by himself, just me and him. So he coming over
- 18:14Speaker 1: to me. It's like, what are you doing? I said,
- 18:16Speaker 1: I'm making Hennessey donuts. He goes, Hennessey donuts. I said,
- 18:20Speaker 1: would you like a taste? One? Gave it to Marcus.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Marcus put the donut in his mouth. He goes, do
- 18:27Speaker 1: you have a card? I said, do I have a card?
- 18:29Speaker 1: I will write my name in blood? Are you kidding me?
- 18:36Speaker 1: I have a business call? Yeah, exactly exactly. So fast
- 18:42Speaker 1: forward a year and a half after that, there was
- 18:44Speaker 1: a casting that somebody told me about that was they
- 18:48Speaker 1: were looking for um businesses. I've been coming businesses. So
- 18:51Speaker 1: I did the casting call. The casting director you know,
- 18:55Speaker 1: submitted that she loved it, and um they asked me
- 18:58Speaker 1: to be on the show Vice Land and also and
- 19:00Speaker 1: a casting thing with my my partner, easy going, and
