- 0:00Welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio, a program for teens and almost
- 0:05teens to better understand that the gospel of Jesus Christ is relevant in their
- 0:09lives, and it's a place where your questions about faith and religion can be answered.
- 0:14And now, here's your host, Deacon Al.
- 0:18Good evening, and welcome to Good News. I am Deacon Al Lundy,
- 0:22a permanent deacon of the Peoria Diocese, here with you on Catholic Spirit Radio
- 0:27Saturday and Sunday evenings from 8 to 8.30.
- 0:31And gosh, I was just thinking, we've been doing this for almost three years?
- 0:37Four years? Really? Wow, it doesn't seem like that. But I think it's four.
- 0:43Four years. Wow, that's great. I enjoy that.
- 0:48So I must be coming up to my 3,000 shows or something. No, but I've got at least 100 of these.
- 0:55Oh, it's got to be more than 100. And you can listen to every one of them back
- 0:59to back by going to catholicspiritradio.org, go to our podcast section,
- 1:04and you can find our previous programs.
- 1:07My mother-in-law has started to listen.
- 1:10So hello, Margaret. Hope you're having a great day. And thank you for tuning again to Good News.
- 1:16So in a little bit, we'll be looking at the readings for the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
- 1:22In the meantime, I talked to you about preparation. Last week,
- 1:27I talked about preparing my garden now for how it's going to look in the spring.
- 1:33Well, my wife and I are also preparing for our vacation, which isn't going to
- 1:39happen for several months.
- 1:40But we take a year to plan our vacations. As soon as we get back from,
- 1:46we only take really one vacation a year.
- 1:49We get back from that vacation, and within a week, we have started planning the next one, right?
- 1:57So we're about, right now, we're about, gosh, 10 months out.
- 2:02Nine, 10 months out from our vacation. We already have our airline tickets.
- 2:07We have our hotel reservations.
- 2:09We've got a couple of tours planned out. We plan way ahead of time because we
- 2:14want to know where we're going, right?
- 2:18And we want to know that we're going to get there.
- 2:20Well, you should be doing that
- 2:22with your faith life. You should be making plans. Where do you want to go?
- 2:27And what are you doing to get there?
- 2:30And there are some people who look at that as being work.
- 2:37It's too much work. I'm going on vacation to relax. I don't want to do all this
- 2:41work. Well, it's the work that makes the vacation possible.
- 2:44People say, well, salvation is a gift.
- 2:48Well, that's true. It is a gift. It's a gift from God.
- 2:53Salvation comes only through the grace of God, but grace requires cooperation.
- 2:59It's not just grace is laid at your plate and you're done. It's like when someone
- 3:03gives you a gift, and if you want to use the gift analogy for grace,
- 3:07and I think that works really well, someone gives you a gift, if you don't open it,
- 3:12if you don't make use of it, what good is that gift?
- 3:17So, God's gift of grace isn't meant to just be laid in front of you.
- 3:23It's meant for you to open and work with,
- 3:27Work with it. There's nothing wrong with the word work. It just means it's a cooperative effort.
- 3:33You put in an effort to blend with God's gift.
- 3:39So what's some of the effort that goes with grace? Well, one thing is obedience.
- 3:44If God gives you the grace to do something, you have to do it in the way God has instructed us to.
- 3:50That includes forgiveness, and charity, and love.
- 3:56If you just say, well, God has saved me, so I'm saved, I don't have to do anything.
- 4:01That's not what Scripture says. It says you have to persevere in obedience to
- 4:08God's commands. That's work.
- 4:11That's not just, oh, well, I'm saved. I've said it once, I'm done.
- 4:17Nothing in Scripture supports that. And nothing in Scripture supports that all
- 4:24you have to do is know Scripture.
- 4:26I mean, if you actually know Scripture, then you know Jesus says you have to
- 4:32eat of His body and blood.
- 4:34That's what it says. John 6 says, you must eat of my body and blood.
- 4:39Jesus also says, you must be baptized. Well, that just doesn't happen.
- 4:45You have to make that happen.
- 4:47That takes effort. That's work.
- 4:50It says you have to love your neighbor. Well, what does that mean?
- 4:53Well, he gives the example of the Samaritan, of the good Samaritan.
- 4:57That was an effort made to care for the man who was beaten up on the roadside.
- 5:05So, Scripture is filled with examples of you have to endure,
- 5:10you have to persevere, you have to respond to God's grace.
- 5:16You can't just say, oh, well, God's graced me, I'm done.
- 5:19So, our readings this weekend talk about that. It talks about the need for perseverance
- 5:24in kind of the first story, kind of a strange way,
- 5:28but still it shows that it took effort on Moses' part for God's grace to be
- 5:36enacted for the tribes of Israel.
- 5:39So, this fundamentalism that some Christians get caught up in, where work is a bad word.
- 5:49In fact, they say, only through faith in Christ are we saved.
- 5:54Nowhere in Scripture does it say that. It says, through the grace of God,
- 6:00we are saved. And that's true.
- 6:02If we didn't have God's grace, nothing, nothing could get us to heaven.
- 6:07But with God's grace, we have to cooperate with it in order to complete that story of salvation.
- 6:16So we're preparing for this trip because, as I said, we want to know where we're
- 6:22going to end up and when we're going to end up there.
- 6:24And so that requires some planning, some work.
- 6:27And it's becoming, it's quite detailed. For just a two-week vacation,
- 6:33there's a lot to consider.
- 6:36Well, in our life, in our faith life, there's a lot to consider.
- 6:40What are we doing to be truly charitable? What have we done to forgive someone,
- 6:45not in our lifetime, but today?
- 6:48What did we do today to show our forgiveness?
- 6:52What did we do today to show our
- 6:54reverence to God? What did we do today to conform to God's commandments?
- 7:00So we're looking ahead and saying day to day, what are we doing to get to where we want to go?
- 7:06Are we ready? Are we prepared? And I think that's a great question to ask yourself each day.
- 7:12I think at the end of the day, sit together with your spouse or with a good friend and say,
- 7:18you know, looking back on my day, reflecting on the last 24 hours,
- 7:23here's what I did to conform myself to Christ.
- 7:28And was it, was it.
- 7:31Was it sufficient for my growth? Was it sufficient for my relationship with Christ?
- 7:37It's a good question. And I think it's one that not enough people take the time to ask.
- 7:43So I'm just putting it in your mind and hopefully in your heart to sit down
- 7:47and ask yourself that this week.
- 7:50We're going to take a break for just a couple moments. When we come back,
- 7:54we're going to look at the readings from the Mass for the 29th Sunday in Ordinary

- 11:44We're about to start our fall carathon in a week, and we would love to have
- 11:49your support to keep this ministry on the air. And you can do that in a couple of ways.
- 11:54One is through your financial support, which is very, very important to us.
- 11:59We operate many, many towers in order to complete our network.
- 12:05And reach the various dioceses of the state of Illinois that we reach.
- 12:09We could also use your prayers.
- 12:11Prayers are very, very important, very powerful.
- 12:14And we rely on your prayers almost as much as we rely on your financial support.
- 12:20So, as I think it was Mother Teresa would like to say, God has all the money
- 12:26we need to keep our ministry going.
- 12:30He keeps it in your pockets.
- 12:33So please show your charity by helping to support Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 12:39So for our readings, this program, we're going to be looking at the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
- 12:45Our first reading is from the book of Exodus.
- 12:47Our second reading is continuing our letter from Paul to Timothy,
- 12:53and then the gospel from the gospel of Luke.
- 12:56And as I say, what you'll see here is a theme about persistence.
- 13:02In our first reading from Exodus, it says, In those days Amalek came and waged war against Israel.
- 13:09Moses, therefore, said to Joshua, Pick out certain men, and tomorrow go out
- 13:14and engage Amalek in battle.
- 13:16I will be standing on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.
- 13:22So Joshua did as Moses told him. He engaged Amalek in battle.
- 13:26After Moses had climbed to the top of the hill with Aaron and Hur,
- 13:29However, as long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the better of the fight.
- 13:35But when he let his hands rest, Amalek had the better of the fight.
- 13:41Moses' hands, however, grew tired, so they put a rock in place for him to sit on.
- 13:47And meanwhile, Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side,
- 13:52one on the other, so that his hands remained steady till sunset.
- 13:57And Joshua mowed down Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. Word of the Lord.
- 14:04Persistence, perseverance. It required Moses to be present during the battle.
- 14:13It required him to work. It required effort for Moses.
- 14:17He had to keep his hands raised toward God, raising the prayers of the Israelite people to God.
- 14:24And as long as he stayed in that mode of worship, the Israeli people were winning in the battle.
- 14:31But when he grew tired and lowered his hands, the enemy began to win.
- 14:37And so, with assistance, with support, Moses was able to continue his worship
- 14:44and the Israeli people won the war. Perseverance.
- 14:51Sometimes we need to persevere through a problem. Sometimes it's just so overwhelming
- 14:57we can't do it ourselves, and we need help to continue in our effort.
- 15:02With Moses, that help came from Aaron and from her.
- 15:06With our help, with us, with our problems, we might find that help with family
- 15:13members, with friends, but also through Christ, through prayers.
- 15:18It's our prayers who can help us to persevere.
- 15:22It's God's active participation in our life that helps us to persevere through our problems.
- 15:29In a letter from Paul, second letter of Paul to Timothy, Paul writes,
- 15:35Beloved, remain faithful to what you have learned and believed.
- 15:39In other words, persevere.
- 15:41Because you know from whom you learned it, and that from infancy you have known
- 15:46the sacred scriptures, which are capable of giving you wisdom for salvation
- 15:50through faith in Christ Jesus.
- 15:52All scripture is inspired by God, and it's useful for teaching,
- 15:57for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
- 16:01so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
- 16:07I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead.
- 16:13And by His appearing and His kingly power, proclaim the word,
- 16:19be persistent, whether it is convenient or inconvenient.
- 16:24Convince, reprimand, encourage through all practice and teaching,
- 16:28all patience and teaching. The word of the Lord.
- 16:32So again, a theme of perseverance, of being faithful to what you know about
- 16:37your faith, what you've learned.
- 16:40Persevere in sharing that with others. Persevere in your knowledge and faith in the Scriptures.
- 16:46And I think something we have to remember at this point, when Paul talks about
- 16:52all Scripture, he's talking about the Old Testament.
- 16:55The New Testament doesn't even exist yet. He has no idea that this letter to
- 16:59Timothy is going to end up as a piece of Scripture.
- 17:02He's talking about the Old Testament. The Old Testament is so important.
- 17:06Yes, we are a New Testament people.
- 17:08Our faith is rooted in Christ, but the promise of Christ is rooted in the Old Testament.
- 17:16And so, you need to know that as well as the New.
- 17:20You need to know where this promise came from and why, and the importance of
- 17:26the struggles of the Jewish people and how that relates to all of us today,
- 17:32not just to the Jewish people, but to all of us.
- 17:35We all have that same struggle with faith that they had.
- 17:40And so Paul reminds Timothy to stay true to these scriptures,
- 17:44to learn from them, to share them, and to bring others to Christ through perseverance,
- 17:51whether it's convenient or not,
- 17:54whether it's through encouragement or through reprimand, have it all based on your faith in Christ.
- 18:01And that's still a good lesson for us today.
- 18:04In our gospel reading from Luke, Jesus told his disciples a parable.
- 18:09And let me back up a minute. In Luke right now, what we're going through in
- 18:14the 18th chapter is a lot of parables.
- 18:18It's almost like Luke is saying, oh, did you hear this one?
- 18:21He goes through this whole string of parables because he wasn't present during Christ's ministry.
- 18:29So he's gone back and he's talked to witnesses.
- 18:32He says, when you heard Christ speak, what did he talk about?
- 18:35And so, he's built this gospel around the personal report that he's gathered
- 18:45from people who were present during Christ's ministry.
- 18:49And so, in this chapter, he's relating this whole series of parables.
- 18:55So, they didn't necessarily all happen on the same day at the same time,
- 18:59but they carry this theme of Jesus taught this—.
- 19:04Jesus told his disciples a parable about the necessity for them to pray always
- 19:09without becoming weary.
- 19:11He said, there was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor respected any human being.
- 19:18And a widow in that town used to come to him and say, render a just decision
- 19:24for me against my adversary.
- 19:26For a long time, the judge was unwilling.
- 19:29But eventually he thought, while it's true that I neither fear God nor respect
- 19:33any human being, because this widow keeps bothering me, I shall deliver a just
- 19:39decision for her, lest she finally come and strike me.
- 19:43Lord said, pay attention to what the dishonest judge says.
- 19:48Will not God then secure the rights of His chosen ones who call out to Him day and night?
- 19:55Will He be slow to answer them? I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily.
- 20:02But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth? The Gospel of the Lord.
- 20:10Persevere. Persistence. Not only in your faith, but in your conversations with God.
- 20:17Whatever you need, not whatever you want.
- 20:21Big difference between needs and wants. Whatever you need, God wants to bring
- 20:27to you. He wants you to have.
- 20:30But He also wants you to understand the source of that gift.
- 20:35And He wants you to ask. He wants a relationship with you. Yes,
- 20:40he knows what you need. He knows what you're thinking.
- 20:42He knows even before you ask. But he wants you to ask because he wants that relationship.
- 20:49A parent knows what the child needs, but he still wants the child to talk to him, right?
- 20:56To share in conversation, in relationship with the parent.
- 21:01It's not about already knowing.
- 21:04It's about building this relationship.
- 21:07Talk to God. Talk to God about what you need.
- 21:11Talk to Him about your problems. Talk to Him about the gifts and the graces He's given you.
- 21:18But persevere in that faith. Persevere in prayer, no matter what it is, good or bad.
- 21:25Persevere in your talk with God. And like the just judge, He will give you what you need.
- 21:31It's a great lesson. It's very simply told, but it's a great lesson,
- 21:37and it's one that so often we forget about.
- 21:42We almost put God aside in a corner and bring Him out on Sundays,
- 21:47where we should be walking with Him every day.
- 21:51He walks with us every day, we just don't always see Him. We don't always pay attention.
- 21:57We kind of ignore him except for one day a week, one hour a week for some people.
- 22:02And what Jesus is calling us to is a perseverance, is a constant communication with God.
- 22:10Knock and the door will open, right? Seek and you will find.
- 22:15Scripture is filled with examples of persevering. We see it in the first reading today with Moses.
- 22:22We hear about it from Paul to Timothy, and now we hear about it from Jesus.
- 22:32Perseverance. Let that be the word of the day for us each day this week.
- 22:38How are you persevering in your faith with Jesus Christ?
- 22:43This is Deacon Al Lundy for Catholic Spirit Radio. May Almighty God bless you,
- 22:48protect you from all evil, and bring you to everlasting life.
