- 0:00Acts chapter 14. At Iconium they entered the
- 0:03synagogue of the Jews together, and spoke in such a manner that
- 0:06a large number of people believed both of Jews and of
- 0:08Greeks. But the Jews who disbelieved
- 0:10stirred up the minds of the Gentiles, and embittered them
- 0:13against the brethren. Therefore they spent a long time
- 0:15there, speaking boldly, with reliance upon the Lord, who was
- 0:19testifying to the word of His grace, granting that signs and
- 0:22wonders be done by their hands. But the people of the city were
- 0:25divided, and some sided with the Jews and some of the apostles.
- 0:29And when an attempt was made by both the Gentiles and the Jews
- 0:31with their rulers to mistreat and to stone them, they became
- 0:34aware of it and fled to the cities of Laconia, Lystra and
- 0:37Derby, and the surrounding region.
- 0:39And there they continued to preach the gospel.
- 0:41At Lystra a man was sitting who had no strength in his feet,
- 0:44lame from his mother's womb, who had never walked.
- 0:47This man was listening to Paul as he spoke, who, when he had
- 0:50fixed his gaze on him and had seen that he had faith to be
- 0:52made well, said with a loud voice.
- 0:55Stand upright on your feet. And he leaped up and began to
- 0:58walk. When the crowd saw what Paul had
- 1:00done, they raised their voice, saying in the Laconian language,
- 1:04The gods have become like men and have come down to us.
- 1:06They began calling Barnabas, Zeus and Paul Hermes because he
- 1:10was the chief speaker. The priest of Zeus, whose temple
- 1:13was just outside the city, brought oxen and garlands to the
- 1:16gates and wanted to offer sacrifice with the crowds.
- 1:18But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore
- 1:22their robes and rushed out into the crowd, crying out and
- 1:24saying, Men, why are you doing these things?
- 1:27We are also men of the same nature as you, and preach the
- 1:29gospel to you, that you should turn from these vain things to a
- 1:32living God who made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and
- 1:35all that is in them. In the generations gone by He
- 1:38permitted all the nations to go their own ways, and yet He did
- 1:41not leave himself without witness in that He did good, and
- 1:44gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying
- 1:47your hearts with food and gladness.
- 1:49Even saying these things with difficulty, they restrained the
- 1:51crowds from offering sacrifice to them.
- 1:53But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having won over the
- 1:57crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city,
- 1:59supposing him to be dead. But while the disciples stood
- 2:02around him, he got up and entered the city.
- 2:04The next day he went away with Barnabas to Derby.
- 2:07After they had preached the gospel to that city and had made
- 2:09many disciples, they returned to Lystra, to Iconium, and to
- 2:12Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging
- 2:16them to continue in the faith, and saying through many
- 2:19tribulations, we must enter the Kingdom of God.
- 2:21When they had appointed elders for them in every church, having
- 2:24prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in
- 2:26whom they had believed. They passed through Pasidia and
- 2:29came into Pamphylia. When they had spoken the word in
- 2:32Purga, they went down to Italia. From there they sailed to
- 2:35Antioch, from which they had been commended to the grace of
- 2:37God for the work that they had accomplished.
- 2:40When they had arrived and gathered the church together,
- 2:42they began to report all the things that God had done with
- 2:45them. Now He had opened a door of
- 2:47faith to the Gentiles, and they spent a long time with the
- 2:49disciples.
