- 0:56stitches and the lingering scent of guilt. That's
- 0:59what I learned the night I met Demonia. It was
- 1:02in the ruins of Hollow Vale courthouse, deep
- 1:07in the Redfin district, a place where the walls
- 1:10still echo with unfinished verdicts and screams
- 1:13that never made it to justice. I was tracking
- 1:18strange energy spikes that pulsed like a heartbeat
- 1:21underground, or a beak could barely stay calm,
- 1:24and my compass spun like it was trapped in a
- 1:26lie. Then the air went still, too still. That's
- 1:30when the mist bled and thick, red and slow like
- 1:35spilled wine. It coiled between broken benches
- 1:38and scorched flags, and from the center of it
- 1:41all he rose. Demonia. A tall pale glyph with
- 1:47two black horns curling from his skull, one of
- 1:50them broken at the tip, as if snapped off in
- 1:53a fight. His face bore a huge stitch across his
- 1:56forehead, and another smaller one on his cheek,
- 2:00like he had been sewn back together after a brutal
- 2:02death. His neck, wrist, collarbone, waist, and
- 2:06ankles were all wrapped in tight black stitches,
- 2:10like a patchwork memory. His eyes glowed. with
- 2:14crimson fury and two long vampire fangs gleamed
- 2:17beneath a solemn bloodstained grin. His cloth
- 2:21-simple black shirt and pants were soaked at
- 2:25the edges as if they'd never dried. He didn't
- 2:28speak, he just appeared and judged. A whisper
- 2:32filled my head, not from him, but from the glyph
- 2:35light itself. Born from justice, formed an innocent
- 2:39blood until truth is found, ammonia hunts. He
- 2:43wasn't hurting me, he wasn't hunting me, or hunting
- 2:48a lie. And yet, he attacked. Not out of rage,
- 2:54out of instinct. I was an intruder in the court,
- 2:58where his creator was wrongly condemned. He moved
- 3:01like a revenant, dodging the unnatural speed.
- 3:07His claws dragged symbols into the floor. They
- 3:11weren't runes, they were names. Names of the
- 3:13guilty. Names of the corrupt. Names of those
- 3:16who framed the man whose blood gave birth to
- 3:18pneumonia. I realized then, this wasn't a monster.
- 3:24This was vengeance made flesh. But vengeance
- 3:27left unchecked becomes its own kind of curse.
- 3:30I had to stop him, not to destroy him, but to
- 3:33redirect him. I opened my field journal mid -battle.
- 3:37Blood on my glove from a scratch he'd given me.
- 3:40I dripped my finger on it and wrote one name,
- 3:44Stella Ferris, witness to the truth. He stopped,
- 3:47looked at the name. His stitched chest rose and
- 3:52fell like something long, buried and ad -stirred.
- 3:55He approached. I didn't move. He reached out
- 3:57a clawed hand and placed it on my journal. That
- 4:00was all it took. He let me bind him, not in chains,
- 4:04but in promise. Now Dermonia walks with me, beside
- 4:09me, a glyph of blood and memory not tamed but
- 4:12respected. He only speaks when a lie is nearby,
- 4:16and sometimes I catch him whispering old court
- 4:18records in his sleep. He's not a villain. He's
- 4:22a verdict that never got to land. After the courthouse,
- 4:27I needed answers, or at least someone who might
- 4:29have a guess that didn't come wrapped in riddles
- 4:31and bleeding mist. So I went to the only person
- 4:35who could give me that, Professor Orian. I didn't
- 4:38expect a warm welcome. I definitely didn't expect
- 4:40him to open the door before I even knocked. Coat
- 4:43half -buttoned, chalk dust on his sleeves, and
- 4:46the permanent scowl already forming beneath his
- 4:50star -scattered eyebrows. You've brought another
- 4:54one, he barked before I could speak. Behind me,
- 4:57Zemonia lingered at the tree line, crimson eyes
- 5:00glowing faintly. In the dark, he didn't growl.
- 5:03He didn't move. But that didn't stop Orion from
- 5:06huffing like I'd brought home a ticking bomb
- 5:08wrapped in things and tragedy. I told you, Orion,
- 5:12snapped Rip, voice rising. We don't collect cursed
- 5:15artifacts like stray pets. You're supposed to
- 5:17study them, not bond with them. He's not cursed,
- 5:20I said. He had blood on his teeth. He's not eating
- 5:25people. Oh, fantastic. Then let me just lower
- 5:28the wand and invite him in for a tea. I had to
- 5:31physically block the doorway when Orion tried
- 5:33to slam it in my face. Professor, listen. He's
- 5:37not attacking, he's mourning. His creator was
- 5:41framed and executed, in Hollow Vale. This glyph
- 5:45formed out of the blood left behind. I saw the
- 5:48names he carved into the floor, every single
- 5:50one of them corrupt. He's not hunting people,
- 5:53he's hunting lies. That made Orion freeze just
- 5:57for a moment. He speaks. Only when there's a
- 6:00lie nearby." I said, casting a glance back at
- 6:03Demonia. Orion scowled even deeper, so I suppose
- 6:06he'll be screaming when he walks into this house.
- 6:10I didn't laugh, but Orabique let out a wheezing
- 6:13chuckle from my shoulder. Finally, after a very
- 6:17long sigh, Orion let me in, on the condition
- 6:20that Demonia stayed outside in the outer glyph
- 6:25circle. Orion spent the whole time pacing like
- 6:31he was deciding between yelling at me or writing
- 6:34a dissertation about why everything I do is a
- 6:38cosmic hazard. Still, after I explained the courthouse,
- 6:47the compass spinning, the whispers from the glyph
- 6:49light, and the battle, we got what we needed.
- 6:53Orion adjusted his glasses fuming, muttering
- 6:55to himself, and then slamming a thick rune. burned
- 6:59book onto the table. This, he said, stabbing
- 7:03a finger at the page, is a category almost no
- 7:06one talks about. Mimic glyphs, born from trauma,
- 7:10fueled by moral imbalance. They don't serve order
- 7:13or chaos. They serve a single memory, a memory
- 7:16too wrong to fade. He looked up at me, eyes burning
- 7:21like twin eclipses. You realize what you've done,
- 7:25Stella Ferris. You didn't... just meet a glyph.
- 7:30You've activated a branch of the archive I thought
- 7:33we've sealed." I frowned. That's bad? Oh, cataclysmically
- 7:38bad, he said, then paused, and academically thrilling.
- 7:43He turned toward the window, where Demonia still
- 7:46stood motionless in the rain. They used to call
- 7:49these judgment glyphs during the Fractured Wars,
- 7:52he muttered, and they only ever appeared. when
- 7:55the world was about to confess something terrible.
- 7:58I didn't know what that meant, not fully. But
- 8:03the way Orion's hands tightened on the edge of
- 8:05the table made my stomach twist. Keep him close,
- 8:08he said at last. But for the Vels' sake, Stella
- 8:10Ferris, don't bring him near the sanctuary, not
- 8:13yet. I nodded, but in my gut I already knew Daemonia
- 8:17had more work to do, and so did I. I left Orion's
- 8:23observatory. with a half -burn map, a warning
- 8:27I didn't intend to follow, and a glyph who walked
- 8:30like every step pulled at old stitches in time.
- 8:36Demonia didn't ask where we were going next.
- 8:38He just followed quietly, like vengeance waiting
- 8:41for permission. I didn't bring him to my sanctuary,
- 8:44not directly, but I also didn't leave him out
- 8:48in the cold. There's a place I go when I need
- 8:50to think, a half -collapsed train car on the
- 8:53edge of the verdant expanse, rusted on the outside
- 8:57full of salvaged cushions and memory moss on
- 9:01the inside. It smells like iron and lavender,
- 9:05safe enough for a monster that doesn't sleep.
- 9:07He didn't sit. He stood at the door all night,
- 9:11eye scanning the horizon, claws switching whenever
- 9:14the wind carried a scent he didn't trust. I watched
- 9:17from inside. Filled journal in hand, ink pulling
- 9:21into every line I hadn't figured out yet. It
- 9:25wasn't until the third hour of silence that he
- 9:28spoke one word, a name. Tasselgrave. I sat up
- 9:34straight. That name was buried deep. One of the
- 9:37corrupted magistrates from Hollow Vale. Official
- 9:41records said he'd vanished after the courthouse
- 9:43burned. No body, no trial, no justice. I flipped
- 9:49through the records I stole. Slash borrowed from
- 9:53Orion's archive. There it was. Tasselgrave. Guilty
- 9:57of stealing false confessions of destroying lives
- 9:59to protect one man's lie. Hmm. Demonia didn't
- 10:03need to say anything more. He'd found the next
- 10:05thread. We tracked the name to the southern wetlands.
- 10:11Ditchmire Hollow. A sunken village that only
- 10:14surfaces during low tides and ghost festivals.
- 10:17Most believe it's cursed. Locals won't even say
- 10:20the name, but if Tasselgrave had gone to ground,
- 10:26that's where he would have wrought it. We arrived
- 10:30just as the fog curled in, white this time, not
- 10:34red, silent waiting. Orabique refused to go further
- 10:38than the tree line. Timonia didn't hesitate,
- 10:40neither did I. The walk through Ditchmire felt
- 10:44like stepping into someone's forgotten confession.
- 10:47Every wall leaned the wrong way, doors opened
- 10:49into swamps, lanterns flickered even when unlit.
- 10:54And at the heart of it all, we found a shack,
- 10:57bones hanging from the rafters like chimes. That's
- 11:01where the truth uncoiled, but not in the way
- 11:03I expected. The glyph light in my journal flared,
- 11:07red as we crossed the threshold, and then flickered
- 11:11violet. True truths, one twist it. Inside we
- 11:16found Tasselgrave, or what was left of him, strung
- 11:20from the rafters by living ink. His eyes hollow,
- 11:24his mouth sewn shut with red thread that pulsed
- 11:27like it had a heartbeat. And painted across the
- 11:32back wall, written in clawed letters I recognized
- 11:35too well. I lied to escape. I lied to survive.
- 11:39Demonia didn't attack. He fell to his knees,
- 11:41not in grief. In fury, he had been Forged to
- 11:46hunt lies, but this was something worse. A guilty
- 11:51man who regretted nothing. And for the first
- 11:53time since the courthouse, I saw demonia change.
- 11:57His stitched body tensed, and new glyphs formed
- 12:03beneath his skin. Names I hadn't seen before,
- 12:06names I didn't recognize. The list was growing,
- 12:09the web was bigger, and someone... Someone was
- 12:13still pulling strings from the dark. I should
- 12:18have turned back. I should have dragged ammonia
- 12:20out of that shack and burned the place to ash.
- 12:25But something in that ink, something in that
- 12:28air held me in place. The glyph light was flickering
- 12:30wildly now. Not just red or violet, but a shifting
- 12:34spectrum I'd never seen before. Like it could
- 12:37decide what truth it was reading, or what kind
- 12:40of monster it was sensing. Timonia stayed motionless,
- 12:44claws sunk deep into the rotting floorboard's
- 12:47chest, rising like he was trying to breathe through
- 12:52stitched lungs. Then I heard it, a voice, not
- 12:56his, not mine. It whispered from behind the walls,
- 12:59wet and slow, like ink dripping from a cracked
- 13:02quill. It was only the vessel, not the verdict.
- 13:10The ink on the wall began to crawl. It slithered,
- 13:12coiled, shaped itself into eyes, dozens of them,
- 13:15each one blinking in slow, unnatural unison.
- 13:19The ink came from the rafter's pulse, tightening
- 13:21around the tasselgrave's corpse, as if reacting
- 13:25to the presence of judgment. That's when I realized
- 13:28tasselgrave hadn't hidden here. He'd been kept.
- 13:33Damonia stood, his jaw tightening. I could see
- 13:35the inner war behind his— glowing eyes, the urge
- 13:38to rip this place apart, fighting against something
- 13:40deeper, something older. I stepped forward, voice
- 13:45low. Demonia, what is this? He didn't answer
- 13:47me. He answered it. Name it, he growled, each
- 13:50syllable shaking the shack, or burn, or burn.
- 13:55The voice came out again, this time clearer.
- 13:59It didn't echo in the room, it echoed in me.
- 14:02The lie keeper does not burn, it stains. Suddenly
- 14:07ink burst from the cracks in the walls like a
- 14:09tidal wave. I barely raised a barrier in time
- 14:13or or a beak cried out From outside the tree
- 14:21line exploding with movement the ink didn't just
- 14:23It didn't just attack the ink you know it tried
- 14:28to rewrite us my vision blurred my limbs felt
- 14:31heavy Like they didn't remember being mine, the
- 14:36glyph light flared white hot on my chest, and
- 14:40Demonia stepped in front of me, absorbed the
- 14:43brunt of the corruption. That's when I saw the
- 14:45ink trying to rewrite his name, trying to unmake
- 14:48him. Demonia roared, not with anger, but defiance,
- 14:52and drove his claws into the floor again, covering
- 14:55one word that made the entire shack tremble,
- 14:57truth. The ink reeled, the eyes blinked out,
- 15:01and the whisper went still. The entire swamp
- 15:04excelled, then silence. Tasselgrave's body slumped,
- 15:09and the thread snapping. The ink drained into
- 15:12the soil. It had never been there, but we both
- 15:15knew better. Something ancient had taken root
- 15:19in Ditchmire. Something that feeds on injustice.
- 15:24Yes, but more than that. It reshapes it. I helped
- 15:28Jemonia to his feet. His stitches glowed dimly
- 15:31now, scarlet fading into faint violet. The names
- 15:34etched across his arm had stopped growing for
- 15:37now, but I knew what I saw. The Lie Keeper, a
- 15:41being that alters memory, warps history, and
- 15:44reshapes truth to fit a darker narrative. And
- 15:47worse, it knows we're hunting it now. But that
- 15:51doesn't matter, because we'll be fine in our
- 15:54sanctuary. I can now take... Demonia back to
- 15:58my sanctuary, and that's exactly what I did that
- 16:01day. I told Professor Orion I wouldn't bring
- 16:06him back to the sanctuary in a minute at the
- 16:08time. But after Ditchmire, after the Lie Keeper,
- 16:12I couldn't leave Demonia out in the wild, not
- 16:15when the thing we were chasing could erase truth
- 16:18like they were lies on a chalkboard, not when
- 16:21his very existence made him a target. So I brought
- 16:25him home, not through the front gate, not through
- 16:28the sky bridge or the storm mirror. I led him
- 16:35in through the river glass cavern, the old tunnel
- 16:38beneath the east cliffs. The one no one uses
- 16:43anymore, mossy, cracked, still laced with my
- 16:46sigil, a path that only answers to my blood.
- 16:50As soon as we stepped inside the sanctuary responded.
- 16:58Glyphlight trembled along the walls, vines shifted
- 17:01and the air grew heavy with old whispers. The
- 17:04wards didn't recognize him, not fully, neither
- 17:06did the others. Xena was the first to notice.
- 17:10She met me at the base of the stairs, arms crossed,
- 17:12Ignisora prowling behind her in a sapphire silence.
- 17:15That thing is stitched together with curses,
- 17:18she snapped, eyes narrowing. And you brought
- 17:21him here? He's not a curse, I said, he's a judgment.
- 17:25And judgment has claws. Before I could answer,
- 17:30Demonia stepped forward, not aggressively, but
- 17:32deliberately, his crimson eyes locked with hers.
- 17:35He spoke just one sentence. I protect what she
- 17:39believes in. Xena didn't flinch, but I saw her
- 17:44expression shift just a flicker. Maybe it was
- 17:47the way he said it. Maybe it was because in that
- 17:50moment she realized the thing at my side wasn't
- 17:53just another glyph. He was part of my path now.
- 17:56Luna was quieter about it. She waited in the
- 17:59garden near the moon lilies eyes on Mirno who
- 18:03had already sent something off I didn't try to
- 18:06explain myself. I just sat beside her and let
- 18:09the silence stretch. She finally broke with a
- 18:12sigh You're not just collecting strays anymore
- 18:16stelle you're building something I didn't answer
- 18:19because I know didn't know what what I was building
- 18:22only that I had to I gave Damonia a room, not
- 18:29a cell, not a chamber with chains or runes, a
- 18:32room, with a view of the northern sky and a shelf
- 18:35for my extra -filled journals. I left a black
- 18:38candle burning in the corner. He stood there
- 18:40for a long time, just watching the candle flicker,
- 18:43as if he wasn't used to stillness, as if peace
- 18:46made him suspicious. He hadn't spoke much since,
- 18:50but I've seen him walk the halls after midnight,
- 18:53silent searching for not - Danger, not lies,
- 19:00but something more. He brushed his claws along
- 19:03the walls sometimes, almost gently, and more
- 19:07than once I caught him whispering the names carved
- 19:10into his skin softly like a prayer. And just
- 19:13last night I woke up to find him sitting outside
- 19:16my door, watching, guarding. Judgment, I've learned,
- 19:20doesn't sleep, but sometimes it learns to rest.
- 19:24And that's all we really need. Sometimes. I mean,
- 19:30come on. One night I even woke up to the rustle
- 19:36of stitches in the soft creek of my bed sheets.
- 19:39Damonia didn't say a word. He just crawled in
- 19:41beside me, slow and careful, like someone who'd
- 19:44never been allowed warmth. His body was cold,
- 19:47stitched, and still, but he didn't need heat.
- 19:50Just presence. I didn't move. Didn't speak. I
- 19:54just let him rest for once. Judgment wasn't hunting.
- 19:57It was healing. And that, my friends, is the
- 20:02episode for this week of the Monster Catchers
- 20:06Journal podcast. And I will see you next time.
- 20:10May the stars of Nimburu shine their beautiful
- 20:13light down onto you. See you next time.
