- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to Money Making Conversations Masterclass. I am your host
- 0:03Speaker 1: with Sean McDonald. I recognized that we all have different
- 0:06Speaker 1: definitions of success. For you, it may be the size
- 0:08Speaker 1: of your paycheck. Mine is basically inspiring people to accomplish
- 0:12Speaker 1: their goals and live their very best life. I always
- 0:15Speaker 1: tell people on this show and every episode, it's time
- 0:17Speaker 1: to stop reading other people's success stories and really start
- 0:19Speaker 1: writing your own. People always talk about their purpose or
- 0:22Speaker 1: their gift. If you have a gift, lead with your gift,
- 0:25Speaker 1: and remember this, don't let your friends, family, a coworkers
- 0:28Speaker 1: stop you from planning or living your dreams. My guests,
- 0:31Speaker 1: so Money Making Conversations Masterclass today is Anthony. Anthony Fleming,
- 0:35Speaker 1: the third Anthony as an actor has known for his
- 0:38Speaker 1: role in Fox. Some of these are just some of
- 0:40Speaker 1: the role. Man has a tremendous resume Foxes Television, Serious,
- 0:44Speaker 1: prison Break. He's also appealed on Divergent, NBC's Chicago Fire.
- 0:48Speaker 1: But currently he's starting in the shows that I watched
- 0:50Speaker 1: every Sunday. Pole Book for Force, A tendant, a tend
- 0:55Speaker 1: of episode Drama said in Chicago, one of my favorite
- 0:57Speaker 1: cities is the third stamer to Pole or you know,
- 1:01Speaker 1: you know Power University. You've got the MC universe, you
- 1:03Speaker 1: got DC Universe, Now you got Power University. It's the
- 1:06Speaker 1: fourth book. Paula breaks apart and comes together. All different
- 1:10Speaker 1: types of family are. Everybody is surrounded by Tommy. But
- 1:13Speaker 1: he has a character that JP did. He plays on
- 1:15Speaker 1: the show Gifted jazz musician. Uh, let him know. I played,
- 1:19Speaker 1: you know, b flash saxophone and tenor saxophone. But I
- 1:22Speaker 1: know I have no skill beyond that, who owns and
- 1:24Speaker 1: operates at blues club with his ailing father that has
- 1:27Speaker 1: been the target of several attacks by local gang members.
- 1:30Speaker 1: As Richard JP's life feels he still cares the pain
- 1:32Speaker 1: and never having a mother in his life and having
- 1:35Speaker 1: a son he has no relationship with. JP's world is
- 1:38Speaker 1: thrown off his axis when he crosses path with the
- 1:41Speaker 1: one and only Tommy. Please. Welcome to Money Making Conversations, Masterclass,
- 1:45Speaker 1: Anthony Flaming the third. How you doing, sir? I'm doing great?
- 1:49Speaker 1: How you doing? Oh? Pretty good? I try to say
- 1:51Speaker 1: everything up. Man. Let everybody know who I'm talking to. Anthony.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Tell us a little bit more about you. Where you
- 1:55Speaker 1: based at right now? Anthony born and raised in Chicago.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I currently live in Chicago, where I was in Chicago
- 2:02Speaker 1: with Steve Hardy that was up to doing this talk
- 2:04Speaker 1: show from twenties twelve the twenty seventeen. So Chicago quickly
- 2:09Speaker 1: became one of my favorite cities. Man. Now now that
- 2:13Speaker 1: I do, I will tell you this, and you could
- 2:15Speaker 1: probably agree with me on this. I have clothes that
- 2:17Speaker 1: I had to buy because of the winter. I can't
- 2:19Speaker 1: wear nowhere else. And what you got, you got to
- 2:23Speaker 1: dress in Chicago, you know how it is. You got
- 2:26Speaker 1: to lay your up, you know, right, I got, I
- 2:29Speaker 1: got hats, I got I got facial uh, I got everything.
- 2:35Speaker 1: But the beauty of Chicago. Talk to us a little
- 2:37Speaker 1: bit about that. That That that that the culture of Chicago,
- 2:40Speaker 1: the black cultures Chicago, the scenes because the food's outstanding,
- 2:45Speaker 1: the black cultures outstanding. And that little summer it gives
- 2:48Speaker 1: you is amazing. The little summer it gives you really
- 2:51Speaker 1: makes you appreciate it doesn't come up the winter. Yes, um, yes, Chicago.
- 2:56Speaker 1: You know, I'm born and raised here, so I'm a
- 2:58Speaker 1: little biased, but I think it's you know, it's a
- 3:01Speaker 1: fantastic city. It's a great place to grow up. I've
- 3:04Speaker 1: heard it said that Chicago is a city that can
- 3:05Speaker 1: both break your heart and feel your heart at the
- 3:08Speaker 1: same time. There's a there is a duality to my
- 3:13Speaker 1: city that I think resonates with a lot of people.
- 3:16Speaker 1: So I'm sure it is that way in a lot
- 3:17Speaker 1: of cities, but Chicago. I really feel it here, and
- 3:19Speaker 1: Tommy is definitely feeling it um as she comes here
- 3:23Speaker 1: and try to set up camp. Well, you know, the
- 3:25Speaker 1: interesting part about it is that being the fact that
- 3:28Speaker 1: I lived in New York for years, I'm originally used
- 3:31Speaker 1: in Texas. I live in New York for years, so
- 3:33Speaker 1: I know that whole Apple, the whole Borough atmosphere. How
- 3:36Speaker 1: and you know how you really you know, the transportation
- 3:39Speaker 1: is different. When he came to Chicago, I knew it
- 3:43Speaker 1: would be a different field because you know, you really
- 3:45Speaker 1: do have to drive everywhere in New York. You really don't.
- 3:48Speaker 1: They have transit systems in Chicago, but new York, you
- 3:51Speaker 1: really can be a guy who don't need a driver.
- 3:54Speaker 1: It's license in New York. And when you get to Chicago, well,
- 3:58Speaker 1: what your relationship was introduced? How I'm just letting everybody
- 4:01Speaker 1: know I watched this series of regulation, but I'd like
- 4:03Speaker 1: for you to just tell the audience your relationship with Tommy,
- 4:06Speaker 1: so we can build off of that our storytelling. Uh,
- 4:09Speaker 1: you're talking about JP's relationship. Yeah, Well, JP and Tommy
- 4:14Speaker 1: meet at a time when, as you had mentioned, JP
- 4:17Speaker 1: is sort of in a desperate situation. His father is sick.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Him and his father owned this jazz club together. His
- 4:22Speaker 1: father is also a musician, and this jazz club is
- 4:26Speaker 1: sort of a dream for both of them. So his
- 4:28Speaker 1: father is stick, which is putting JP in a financial crisis.
- 4:33Speaker 1: So he's the club is in foreclosure and also it's
- 4:37Speaker 1: getting shot up by local gang members and he doesn't
- 4:39Speaker 1: understand why. So he is a brother who is losing
- 4:44Speaker 1: pieces of himself, his father, his club, He's estranged from
- 4:47Speaker 1: his son. Um. He has that residual pain and uh
- 4:52Speaker 1: memory of not growing up with his mother. So he's
- 4:55Speaker 1: he's losing pieces of himself, as is Tommy. Tommy is
- 4:58Speaker 1: rolling into town having left everything in New York behind.
- 5:02Speaker 1: You know, he leaves town with just such tragic loss
- 5:06Speaker 1: that he's experienced. Everyone who's ever been close to him
- 5:10Speaker 1: is gone or has pushed him away. Some boy his
- 5:12Speaker 1: own hand, you know. So he's got his car is
- 5:15Speaker 1: a beautiful mustang. He drives a bag full of cash
- 5:18Speaker 1: and a couple of burning phones, and uh, he's coming
- 5:21Speaker 1: to Chicago to start over, to reimagine what he can be.
- 5:26Speaker 1: But there's a whole new city to learn, the whole
- 5:27Speaker 1: new grid. As you know, Chicago is not New York.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Both big cities, but they're both different cities. So he's
- 5:33Speaker 1: got to learn a whole new situation here. But also
- 5:36Speaker 1: he got to learned that you and him are walking
- 5:38Speaker 1: shoo super sizes of the streets. When he had power,
- 5:40Speaker 1: he was running with his brought ghosts and both were
- 5:42Speaker 1: drug dealers. You're not remotely in the drug game drug business.
- 5:47Speaker 1: I want to get into the drug business. How do
- 5:49Speaker 1: you deal with that characterization of of of eventually learning
- 5:53Speaker 1: about who he really is, but also the fact that
- 5:55Speaker 1: he comes into your character's life and he is your
- 5:59Speaker 1: I guess you can say half brother Tommy is he
- 6:02Speaker 1: is my heaven brother. Yeah, And that's something that is
- 6:04Speaker 1: very real, and that you're black and he's white and
- 6:07Speaker 1: technically you know what I'm saying from a visual exactly,
- 6:12Speaker 1: but still, you know, none of that really matters when
- 6:14Speaker 1: it comes to family, because that's real. I mean there's
- 6:17Speaker 1: there's no family that is all just one thing. I
- 6:18Speaker 1: think you'll find that mixing and interracial mixing and a
- 6:22Speaker 1: lot of families. You know, I myself and interation. My
- 6:24Speaker 1: father is black, my mother is Filipino. H So you
- 6:28Speaker 1: know that we are trying to find our shared past.
- 6:32Speaker 1: We both have this shared past that we don't remember.
- 6:35Speaker 1: So when Tommy comes into town, you know, the grandmother
- 6:38Speaker 1: is the connection and the show. He is going to
- 6:41Speaker 1: visit his grandmother once he finds out his grandmother is alive,
- 6:45Speaker 1: and that's where him and I meet. So it's about
- 6:47Speaker 1: finding out who we were once upon it's time. It
- 6:52Speaker 1: was funny because he you know, he would like you know,
- 6:54Speaker 1: his character because were shocked and surprised. But you know
- 6:57Speaker 1: what I think I love about that the Joseph lays
- 7:00Speaker 1: the character lead character of the series who came over
- 7:02Speaker 1: from power, is that you know, Tommy is a guy
- 7:05Speaker 1: who just shakes it off. His character. You know, you
- 7:08Speaker 1: give him information, he just shakes it off. You know,
- 7:10Speaker 1: he shoot somebody, he shakes it off. He finds it,
- 7:13Speaker 1: he finds out you his brother, he thinks about it.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Go okay, okay, whatever, let's let's let's let's let's roll.
- 7:18Speaker 1: You might, you might, you might getting I'm good with it,
- 7:20Speaker 1: and so let's let's go back to you know, I'll
- 7:23Speaker 1: be honest with you, you know, all the way to
- 7:26Speaker 1: Power series with the very first episode and and then
- 7:29Speaker 1: I remember when I read the reports about fifty Cents
- 7:33Speaker 1: doing a series on Stars about the drug dealer who
- 7:37Speaker 1: owned a nightclub. To me, I couldn't even wrap my
- 7:40Speaker 1: head around that is something I would watch. I really
- 7:43Speaker 1: did the first but but they've developed talking about Courtney
- 7:46Speaker 1: Kemp and him have developed such a series. It's really
- 7:50Speaker 1: family driven. It's face about family. So tell us about
- 7:54Speaker 1: your journey before you became cast on this series with
- 7:58Speaker 1: the original series and what what what what? What attracted
- 8:01Speaker 1: you to the Power original series? And then what motivates
- 8:04Speaker 1: you to continue in the successful role that your plan
- 8:07Speaker 1: is JP well, you know, to keep it honest. I
- 8:11Speaker 1: was into the original series while it was out, but
- 8:13Speaker 1: I wasn't, you know, dying hard. I knew it because
- 8:16Speaker 1: I know Joseph personally. Uh you know, Joseph is from
- 8:19Speaker 1: Chicago and him and I have worked together on stage before,
- 8:22Speaker 1: so we've you know, we've been on stage before and
- 8:25Speaker 1: we've remained friends over the years, so my connection to
- 8:27Speaker 1: the show was through him, and uh, but once I
- 8:31Speaker 1: was cast in the show, of course, Marathon the whole first,
- 8:36Speaker 1: the whole for a season I'm talking about. Man, it
- 8:37Speaker 1: was like sixty five episodes in a very short amount
- 8:40Speaker 1: of time. But you get pulled in that way. The
- 8:44Speaker 1: characters are so well written, they're so dynamic, they're so complex,
- 8:48Speaker 1: they're so flawed in a lot of ways, you know,
- 8:51Speaker 1: and incomplete, and everybody is searching for something. Power is
- 8:55Speaker 1: always shifting, and everybody's always trying to grab that power
- 8:57Speaker 1: and in whatever form that they are, that they are
- 9:01Speaker 1: chasing it, you know. And like you say, it's also
- 9:03Speaker 1: about family. Tommy comes into town, and it's about how
- 9:07Speaker 1: his effect is on other families, houses, effect on the
- 9:11Speaker 1: CBI brothers. You know, what is Tommy doing to that family?
- 9:14Speaker 1: What is his what is his presence doing to the
- 9:17Speaker 1: Flynn flamming you know, the Flynn family. That's hard to
- 9:20Speaker 1: say real quickly, but you know, the family that's been
- 9:23Speaker 1: established here in Chicago and our story, Um, you know,
- 9:26Speaker 1: he's coming in and disrupting things. You know, the daughter
- 9:29Speaker 1: and the son both kind of want to do their
- 9:30Speaker 1: own thing with Tommy. So we'll be right back with
- 9:33Speaker 1: more Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald. Now, let's
- 9:39Speaker 1: return to Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald. Those
- 9:44Speaker 1: layers are what makes it interesting, correct, definitely. And then
- 9:48Speaker 1: you know in the scene there's a scene where Tommy
- 9:52Speaker 1: and j P and JP's father are sitting around talking
- 9:56Speaker 1: and you know, JP's father is just like, you know,
- 9:57Speaker 1: who is this white boy? W what are your intentions
- 10:01Speaker 1: uh breathing back in the town. You know, what are
- 10:04Speaker 1: you trying to get out of JP? So yeah, all
- 10:06Speaker 1: of that family dynamic is just lay it throughout the show,
- 10:09Speaker 1: and I think it pulls everybody in because I mean,
- 10:12Speaker 1: maybe not to this heightened level for everybody, but it's
- 10:14Speaker 1: definitely something that resonates with our power fan base. Well,
- 10:18Speaker 1: the thing about it, I always tell people because I'm
- 10:21Speaker 1: looking at the Fast and Furious nine, you know, if
- 10:23Speaker 1: you look through that whole storyline, that's all they talk
- 10:26Speaker 1: about his family. You know, every episode always ends there
- 10:29Speaker 1: there's some dinner table where they unite, so you know,
- 10:31Speaker 1: the whole concept is family. They can raise cars and
- 10:35Speaker 1: blow it up and all that stuff, but it always
- 10:37Speaker 1: goes back to family. Same thing with power, same thing
- 10:40Speaker 1: with ghosts. It's about family. And so in this story
- 10:43Speaker 1: they really introducing the rather unique relationship because no one
- 10:48Speaker 1: would have seen this coming. You know, Tommy going to Chicago,
- 10:52Speaker 1: who has a half brother who's black, whose mom had
- 10:55Speaker 1: a relationship with a black man. So Tommy has to
- 10:58Speaker 1: deal with that relationship. But also, like say, introduced to
- 11:01Speaker 1: all these other families where he's just like flipping switches.
- 11:04Speaker 1: He plus he's carrying that baggage from New York into Chicago.
- 11:09Speaker 1: So when you when you look at all this, this world,
- 11:12Speaker 1: this this I would say confusion, but I say drama happening.
- 11:17Speaker 1: How does your character layer itself into this show? Well,
- 11:21Speaker 1: Tommy is in JP. You know they're trying, they're vetting
- 11:25Speaker 1: each other out. Tommy is trying to see can he
- 11:28Speaker 1: trust JP? You know, can can we can I pull
- 11:31Speaker 1: JP in? And that's another thing Tommy has to decide
- 11:34Speaker 1: once he finds out that he does have family here
- 11:37Speaker 1: in Chicago with JP. How do you protect him? Do
- 11:39Speaker 1: you pull them closer to you or do you push
- 11:41Speaker 1: them away from you? Do I want to bring him
- 11:44Speaker 1: into this fold? Or you know, now I'm gonna just
- 11:46Speaker 1: keep it moving past them. But I think the more
- 11:48Speaker 1: that they uncover, the more that they discover about their
- 11:51Speaker 1: shared past and JP and Tommy sees JP's intentions, Um,
- 11:56Speaker 1: I think we'll see JP definitely playing a bigger role
- 11:58Speaker 1: in Tommy's world. They had to. And I'm just give
- 12:01Speaker 1: you some backstory on you know, PowerBook for Force. When
- 12:05Speaker 1: it premiered, if premier to the highest numbers in Stars history,
- 12:09Speaker 1: and I was one of those people who generated that
- 12:11Speaker 1: premiere and it comes on every Sunday on Stars. I'm
- 12:15Speaker 1: on the on the East coast, so it's on eight o'clock,
- 12:17Speaker 1: so I'm two at seven o'clock Central, eight o'clock on
- 12:20Speaker 1: the West coast, and I just find the characters. You know,
- 12:23Speaker 1: the episode can anywhere be from forty five to an
- 12:26Speaker 1: hour and five minutes long, because they make very each week.
- 12:29Speaker 1: But when I when I look at your characters, because
- 12:31Speaker 1: I want to die, dive deeper into that because of
- 12:33Speaker 1: the fact that we kind of talked about it. You know,
- 12:35Speaker 1: you've been You've had a pain for life. You know,
- 12:38Speaker 1: you grew up without a mom, your father's ailing, and
- 12:41Speaker 1: then you have a son. So and I think that's
- 12:43Speaker 1: really important because we're talking about a black man who
- 12:46Speaker 1: who in the culture that we live in, not that
- 12:49Speaker 1: not to have a son in his life. So give
- 12:51Speaker 1: everybody the back stories. Why isn't that, Why isn't your
- 12:54Speaker 1: son in your life? And uh, JP's son is not
- 12:57Speaker 1: in his life, and he was until he was about
- 12:59Speaker 1: three maybe four years old. JP loved becoming a father
- 13:03Speaker 1: and he loves his son very much. That's also, you know,
- 13:06Speaker 1: feeds into the tragedy of it. This is a brother
- 13:08Speaker 1: who wants a relationship with his son, you know. Um.
- 13:12Speaker 1: JP came out to his wife at the time that
- 13:15Speaker 1: he was gay and when that happened, when he decided
- 13:19Speaker 1: to live his life that way, um, his wife at
- 13:24Speaker 1: the time took their son away from him. And JP
- 13:28Speaker 1: has tried to find him after all this time, in
- 13:30Speaker 1: many years as far as the backstory is concerned, but
- 13:33Speaker 1: he can't find them. So essentially he has no connection
- 13:37Speaker 1: to a child of his who was out here in
- 13:38Speaker 1: the world. And that is just a big void, a
- 13:41Speaker 1: big hole in JP's life, you know. Um. So that's
- 13:45Speaker 1: why when he's uncovering more and more about his past
- 13:48Speaker 1: and how his mother Kate Tommy and JP's mother Kate
- 13:52Speaker 1: left JP to raise to raise Tommy. You know, he
- 13:56Speaker 1: is repeating that pattern and that cycle, and it's just
- 14:00Speaker 1: weighing very heavily on JP. He wants nothing more than
- 14:03Speaker 1: to be a father to his son. Um. But when
- 14:06Speaker 1: he did come out, which takes a lot of bravery
- 14:09Speaker 1: to to to do that, to be able to say,
- 14:11Speaker 1: I'm gonna stop living my life as a lie and
- 14:13Speaker 1: I'm going to live it honestly. But he did that
- 14:15Speaker 1: and it cost him dearly. It costs him a relationship
- 14:19Speaker 1: with his son, you know, and the tragedy of that
- 14:24Speaker 1: is uh is something that you know, was was really
- 14:28Speaker 1: really great to work with as an actor, to really
- 14:31Speaker 1: dive into that and to see how it shapes and
- 14:33Speaker 1: forms JP's world. Cool. Now I'm talking to h Anthony
- 14:38Speaker 1: Fleming the third. He played the role JP on this
- 14:41Speaker 1: very on the very popular power book for Force. He
- 14:44Speaker 1: plays Tommy's half brother. Um. You know, I have a
- 14:47Speaker 1: daughter and uh, because when I when I look at
- 14:50Speaker 1: your character, you know, I think about I'm kind of
- 14:53Speaker 1: mad when I say that. But this just let me
- 14:56Speaker 1: finish it, because this is a good thing. Because if
- 14:59Speaker 1: if my daughter, you know, if I left me at
- 15:03Speaker 1: three for some reason I couldn't control, and then I
- 15:07Speaker 1: saw again at sixteen or eighteen and eighteen, I would
- 15:10Speaker 1: be so hurt because I know there were so many
- 15:13Speaker 1: things that I would have taught her, I would have
- 15:17Speaker 1: poured into her, that would have made her. I feel
- 15:19Speaker 1: a better person that I get from your kid. That's
- 15:23Speaker 1: am I reading the same type of hurt that you're
- 15:25Speaker 1: delivering on screen in your character. It feels like when
- 15:28Speaker 1: you look at that photo, it's a lot of pain
- 15:31Speaker 1: in that photo because you know what could have been
- 15:34Speaker 1: if you would have been allowed to live a life
- 15:37Speaker 1: as a father for this young man. Oh, there's definitely pain.
- 15:40Speaker 1: There's there is so much pain associated with having a
- 15:45Speaker 1: child of yours, something that came from your body that
- 15:49Speaker 1: is out here in the world and you have no
- 15:51Speaker 1: connection to it. You don't know if that child is
- 15:55Speaker 1: one alive. If it is the child is alive, is
- 15:58Speaker 1: it's safe, it's my child taking care of you know,
- 16:02Speaker 1: basic needs and you know what is the relationship? Um,
- 16:06Speaker 1: how is this child seeing the world? What is his
- 16:08Speaker 1: child experience? So not to have any connection is um
- 16:13Speaker 1: it's heartbreaking, you know, it's it's his biggest regret and
- 16:17Speaker 1: it's his biggest um, the biggest pain in his life. Definitely,
- 16:22Speaker 1: we'll be right back with more Money Making Conversations Masterclass
- 16:25Speaker 1: with Rushan McDonald. Now, let's return to Money Making Conversations
- 16:32Speaker 1: Masterclass with Rashan McDonald. Where's your character going? As far
- 16:36Speaker 1: as the evolution of the character in these overall ten episodes,
- 16:40Speaker 1: because that's all they've shot for this and it looks
- 16:42Speaker 1: like those ratings are where I think they are. We're
- 16:44Speaker 1: all gonna be seeing more episodes in the future. That
- 16:47Speaker 1: has not been announced yet as we are interviewed on
- 16:50Speaker 1: this particular episode, but probably for forced by Man. I
- 16:53Speaker 1: enjoy your character, Anthony. I enjoy the show. You know, uh,
- 16:58Speaker 1: sometimes it's over the top, but they I'm watching television,
- 17:01Speaker 1: I ride with it. I ride with it because it's
- 17:04Speaker 1: and you know, we actually did get picked up for
- 17:06Speaker 1: season two. Congratulations, man, Congratulations. Let's say they get loud man,
- 17:11Speaker 1: because because I read the article, you know, I think
- 17:14Speaker 1: I've read the article the just that I mean last
- 17:16Speaker 1: week or something like that where everybody kept asking them Joseph,
- 17:19Speaker 1: was he picked up? Was he picked up? He said?
- 17:21Speaker 1: And heard yet and normally the show was picked up
- 17:23Speaker 1: around this time. Congratulations. How you feel, brother, Man excited.
- 17:28Speaker 1: So you know, we got picked up a season to
- 17:30Speaker 1: the news just dropped yesterday. So this fresh man, I'm
- 17:37Speaker 1: so happy because they can delve into your character, man,
- 17:39Speaker 1: because I want to see you know, because it's it's
- 17:42Speaker 1: a lot because you know the fact that you know
- 17:44Speaker 1: that you're gonna have to introduce your character to your son,
- 17:47Speaker 1: and first of all, I appreciately have to find out
- 17:48Speaker 1: who you are and they have to realize that you
- 17:50Speaker 1: know you're you're gay, and your dad. Those are a
- 17:53Speaker 1: lot of dynamics that has to be worked out. So
- 17:55Speaker 1: I think that, man, it's gonna be fun watching you man,
- 17:58Speaker 1: and in the future episodes and also in the next
- 18:01Speaker 1: season because that character that you're playing, Anthony, resonates with
- 18:06Speaker 1: me because of the fact that I am a father,
- 18:09Speaker 1: and it resonates with me because I know that I
- 18:12Speaker 1: don't want to experience your pain, but I can relate
- 18:15Speaker 1: to your pain if I was denied an opportunity because
- 18:17Speaker 1: I'm one of those passionate people that you know, I
- 18:19Speaker 1: want to be a dad, I want to be a parent,
- 18:21Speaker 1: and that's what that role is being played out on
- 18:23Speaker 1: your character. Now, did you do any research or this
- 18:26Speaker 1: is something that's naturally within you. This is the when
- 18:29Speaker 1: when you're giving directions by the director or casting what
- 18:33Speaker 1: what what? What tips or steps did they give you
- 18:35Speaker 1: to play this out? Or you say, hey man, this
- 18:37Speaker 1: is I'm gonna deal with it. Uh I see this
- 18:40Speaker 1: character going in this direction. Tell my audience how does
- 18:42Speaker 1: that play itself out? When you're building out a character
- 18:45Speaker 1: like this that's so unique, well, you know, of course,
- 18:48Speaker 1: the writers, Courtney Kemp and her amazing writing team have
- 18:52Speaker 1: developed the story in each individual character to be you know,
- 18:56Speaker 1: so so multifaceted and so so layered. But then as
- 19:01Speaker 1: an actor, you know, you're hired to do a job.
- 19:04Speaker 1: You're hired to bring your skill set and you know,
- 19:08Speaker 1: some of your interpretations and perspective to the role. So
- 19:12Speaker 1: we've been been a blessing. It has been such a
- 19:15Speaker 1: blessing to be able to do that with this particular character.
- 19:17Speaker 1: You know, I feel this cat in my bones. You know,
- 19:20Speaker 1: I'm a parent myself, and you know I know the joy,
- 19:23Speaker 1: so you know I'm coming from. I know where you're
- 19:25Speaker 1: coming from. You know I know where you're coming from. Um,
- 19:29Speaker 1: So I know that joy and that feeling and the
- 19:31Speaker 1: things that you try to teach your children and how
- 19:33Speaker 1: you want your children to be out here in the world.
- 19:36Speaker 1: And so, you know, I drew on a lot of
- 19:40Speaker 1: personal experiences, uh, for this role for sure, when it
- 19:43Speaker 1: comes to being a parent, when it comes to you know,
- 19:46Speaker 1: JP loves his father, it's his hero. You know, my
- 19:49Speaker 1: father was my hero and someone who I was very
- 19:51Speaker 1: close to, and he's he's someone who introduced me to jazz.
- 19:55Speaker 1: I would have loved for me and my dad to
- 19:57Speaker 1: open up a jazz club because you know, he he
- 20:00Speaker 1: grew up and he put that love of jazz in me,
- 20:02Speaker 1: and you know, to this day, it's my favorite music.
- 20:04Speaker 1: So it's been great to connect on that level as well.
- 20:07Speaker 1: I'm letting right now, I'm talking to Anthony Fleming the Third.
- 20:11Speaker 1: He plays the incredible character J. P. Gibbs newly renewed force. Uh.
- 20:19Speaker 1: You know, I I want to thank you man for
- 20:21Speaker 1: coming on the show Man because of the fact that
- 20:23Speaker 1: I just try to tell stories. I try to tell
- 20:25Speaker 1: stories of people who I feel like I have an
- 20:27Speaker 1: interesting story to tell. I know that you are. Are
- 20:29Speaker 1: you working on any other projects outside of Power right there? Are?
- 20:33Speaker 1: I know COVID lift is dropping. I know you're based
- 20:35Speaker 1: out of Chicago. What does the future look like for
- 20:37Speaker 1: Anthony Fleming outside of power? You know, I'm just keep grinding, baby,
- 20:42Speaker 1: keep hustling. You know, some auditioning for stuff I'm getting
- 20:45Speaker 1: told no, you know, because that's that's another thing storytelling.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Just so you know, the actors, the grind never stops.
- 20:50Speaker 1: You get told no way more than you get told yes.
- 20:53Speaker 1: So you know, you got to keep hustling. You gotta
- 20:55Speaker 1: stay hungry. That's one thing I would always stress and
- 20:58Speaker 1: tell people who come into this in the street and
- 21:00Speaker 1: keep sharpening your skills, keep honing your craft. So I'm
- 21:03Speaker 1: steady doing that. I got a couple of things projects
- 21:06Speaker 1: that I'm working on. You know. I also do voiceover work.
- 21:09Speaker 1: I can hear it. I can hear it like it's
- 21:13Speaker 1: just still two five PC. And did I be a
- 21:16Speaker 1: happy can happy cam here? Brother? No? But really, you know,
- 21:19Speaker 1: because like I said, uh, my background just a little
- 21:22Speaker 1: bit before wrap. You know, started out as a stand
- 21:24Speaker 1: up comedian, left the career as IBM, where I was
- 21:28Speaker 1: at a math degree, so I was at the grinding,
- 21:30Speaker 1: So I know exactly. You know, as you have to
- 21:33Speaker 1: put the work in, you have to have faith in yourself.
- 21:36Speaker 1: You know, you have to believe that you have to
- 21:38Speaker 1: create relationships. That's important as well, because you're not gonna
- 21:42Speaker 1: make it in this business by yourself. You gotta be
- 21:45Speaker 1: half people you can count on. Like you said, you
- 21:47Speaker 1: have the relationship with Joseph even before you really became
- 21:50Speaker 1: a fan of the series Power, and I'm sure that
- 21:53Speaker 1: helped you out as well. But again, Man, again, congratulations
- 21:56Speaker 1: serious being renewed, Anthony, and thank you for coming on
- 21:58Speaker 1: Money Making Conversation mastical. You're a fantastic brother. Hey, thanks man,
- 22:02Speaker 1: I appreciate it. Thank you. If you want to hear
- 22:04Speaker 1: any interviews or seeing interviews or Money Making Conversations master Class,
