- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word. Together
- 0:43in Mark chapter 10 we come to another account of Jesus
- 0:46interactions with the rich young ruler.
- 0:49We covered this when we were talking through Matthew chapter
- 0:5119, so we won't fully re plow that ground.
- 0:55However, I want to take a minute to zoom in on Jesus conversation
- 0:58with his disciples after the rich young ruler walks away sad
- 1:02after Jesus tells him to sell all he has and follow him.
- 1:06Here's what happened next. Listen to verse 23 and Jesus
- 1:10looking around said to his disciples how hard it will be
- 1:13for those who are wealthy to enter the Kingdom of God.
- 1:17This amazed the disciples that wealth and prosperity could
- 1:21actually be a hindrance to a person's relationship with God.
- 1:25Jesus isn't finished, he goes on children, how hard it is to
- 1:29enter the Kingdom of God. It is easier for a camel to go
- 1:33through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the
- 1:36Kingdom of God. Entering heaven is difficult.
- 1:40This aligns with Jesus language all through the gospels.
- 1:42The path to heaven requires death.
- 1:45It requires surrender of 1's whole self and handing it over
- 1:48to God. And yet we know that the path to
- 1:51heaven is also simple. We know that whoever calls on
- 1:54the name of the Lord will be saved.
- 1:56We know that if we would simply repent and believe the gospel,
- 1:59we will be saved. So how can we align these
- 2:02realities? What hope do we have to enter
- 2:05heaven? What hope does the rich man
- 2:07have? Jesus tells us that it is easier
- 2:10for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich
- 2:13man to enter the Kingdom at. This hyperbole or extreme
- 2:16exaggeration is intended to shock us.
- 2:19It's intended to jolt us into realizing that it's extremely
- 2:23difficult for the rich to enter heaven.
- 2:25Indeed, it's extremely difficult for any of us to enter heaven.
- 2:29But Jesus isn't finished. Who is able to overpower the
- 2:33allure and magnetism of riches? Who is able to deliver us from
- 2:37the Kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of light?
- 2:39Who is able to grant a helpless Sinner entrance into the Kingdom
- 2:43of heaven? Listen to verse 27.
- 2:47Looking at them, Jesus said with people it is impossible, but not
- 2:52with God. For all things are possible with
- 2:55God. God is able to do it.
- 2:59God is able to satisfy that rich young ruler in a way that his
- 3:03wealth never could. God is able to redeem a Sinner
- 3:06and fill him with his love and power and peace.
- 3:10God is able to do what man never could.
- 3:13God is able to rescue sinners and give them eternal life with
- 3:18Him.
