- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfl Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome to Connecting the Dots. I'm Alex.
- 0:18And I'm Morgan. It's great to be here at Connecting
- 0:19those Dots for you. It is Wednesday, September
- 0:2217th, 2025, and we're ready to break down today's
- 0:25tech news and really see how it connects to your
- 0:28world. Absolutely. We've got some really interesting
- 0:30stuff lined up today. But first, let's do a quick
- 0:32check on the world outside the tech bubble. Sounds
- 0:35good. OK, quick look at the national weather.
- 0:38There's a coastal storm hitting the Mid -Atlantic.
- 0:42Expect heavy rain, gusty winds there. And across
- 0:47the plains, also heavy rain, thunderstorms, maybe
- 0:50even some excessive rainfall, especially western
- 0:52South Dakota. And that tropical system? Right,
- 0:54Tropical Depression 7. It's out in the Central
- 0:56Atlantic. Could become a tropical storm later
- 0:58today. Something to watch. Definitely. And closer
- 1:01to home here in Sacramento, well, it's going
- 1:03to be hot. High of 97 degrees Fahrenheit expected.
- 1:06Oof, yeah, stay cool, stay hydrated, folks. All
- 1:09right, switching gears to markets, how did things
- 1:11look today? Well, the Dow Jones finished up,
- 1:14gained about 247 points, so just over a half
- 1:18a percent increase, pretty solid. OK, good day
- 1:20for the Dow. What about the S &P? S &P 500 was
- 1:23basically flat, down just a tiny bit, 1 .55 points,
- 1:29so 0 .02%. Barely moved. Huh, and Bitcoin. Bitcoin
- 1:34also saw a slate dip today, down about $640,
- 1:38which is around 0 .55%. So a bit of a mixed bag
- 1:42out there today. Some up, some down. Yeah, you
- 1:45know, that's off and out goes the market doing
- 1:47its thing. True. OK, now for some sports news
- 1:50close to our hearts. SF Giants fans, brace yourselves.
- 1:53Oh boy. I saw the score. Not great, was it? They
- 1:56lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks yesterday. Final
- 1:58score, 5 -6. Close game, but still a loss. Exactly.
- 2:03Andrew Salfran got the win for Arizona, and Corbin
- 2:06Carroll had a big night for them, went three
- 2:08for five. Just a tough one. Yeah, that stinks.
- 2:10Always does when they lose. But hey, there's
- 2:12always the next game, right? That's the spirit.
- 2:14Okay, before we dive into the big tech stories,
- 2:16we're really excited to welcome a new sponsor
- 2:18to Connecting the Dots, Pins and Aces. Oh yeah,
- 2:21Pins and Aces. If you're a golfer, you probably
- 2:23know them. Premium golf gear, apparel, accessories,
- 2:26really top -notch stuff. Absolutely. If you want
- 2:28to elevate your game, look sharp on the course,
- 2:31check them out. The website is pinsanddances
- 2:33.com. That's P -I -N -S -A -N -D -A -C -E -S
- 2:38.com. And they've got a great offer for our listeners
- 2:40too, right? They sure do. Use the promo code
- 2:43SNARFUL, S -N -A -R -F -U -L at checkout, and
- 2:47you'll get 21 % off your entire purchase. Wow,
- 2:5021%. That's fantastic. Definitely worth checking
- 2:52out if you play golf. For sure. Okay, let's transition
- 2:55now. We've been digging through the SnarfleTech
- 2:57article report, our Morningstar, and pulled out
- 3:00three stories that really caught our eye today.
- 3:02Yeah, there's this interesting theme emerging,
- 3:04isn't there? Technology becoming both more specialized
- 3:08for pros in some ways, but also more accessible
- 3:10for everyone else. Exactly. It's a fascinating
- 3:12contrast. So let's unpack these, starting with
- 3:14the first one. The iPhone 17 Pro review. The
- 3:17big question seems to be, is the Pro still the
- 3:20go -to for everyone? Right. Because for a long
- 3:23time, if you wanted the absolute best iPhone
- 3:25experience, you know, the top screen, best cameras,
- 3:28longest battery, you just bought the Pro. Simple
- 3:30decision. But that might be changing. It seems
- 3:32so. This review argues the 17 Pro is becoming
- 3:35much more focused. It's leaning heavily towards
- 3:38creators, I think, serious video shooters, photographers,
- 3:42people who really need that extreme battery and
- 3:44those super advanced cameras day in, day out.
- 3:47So less for the person who just wants like the
- 3:49nicest phone and more for someone using it as
- 3:51a professional tool. Precisely. And a huge reason
- 3:54for that shift. The standard iPhone 17, which
- 3:56starts at what? Seven hundred ninety nine dollars.
- 3:59It now has the exact same bright, smooth, always
- 4:02on display as the pro model, which is one thousand
- 4:05ninety nine dollars. Whoa. OK. That is a big
- 4:07deal. That screen was always a major pro selling
- 4:10point. Exactly. So that key differentiator is
- 4:12gone. Now the regular 17 looks incredibly appealing
- 4:15for. Well, probably most people. Interesting.
- 4:17And what about the design? I heard they went
- 4:19back to rounded edges. They did. First time since
- 4:21the iPhone 11 Pro, I think. Makes it feel a bit
- 4:25different. Maybe more comfortable to hold. Plus,
- 4:27there's this bold new orange color. And apparently
- 4:31the contrast between the orange ceramic shield
- 4:33back and the aluminum sides actually helps guide
- 4:37where you place MagSafe accessories. Kind of
- 4:39a neat little design trick. Ah, clever. And durable
- 4:42too, right? Ceramic shield back, tougher front
- 4:44glass. Supposedly. The reviewer mentioned dropping
- 4:48their Orange Pro face down on a rocky trail while
- 4:50camping. Ouch. And it survived. Plus the bright
- 4:54color made it easy to find. So maybe practical
- 4:56too. And speaking of the aluminum body, that
- 4:59switch plus a new vapor chamber inside is all
- 5:01about better cooling. Ah, tackling the hot phone
- 5:04problem when you're gaming or doing something
- 5:06intensive. You got it. Trying to stop that sizzly
- 5:10feeling and prevent the phone from slowing down
- 5:12under load. Better thermal performance means
- 5:15more consistent power. Makes sense. And the battery,
- 5:18I heard it's massive. It really is. They apparently
- 5:20hollowed out the aluminum block to cram in the
- 5:22biggest battery they possibly could. The claim
- 5:24is up to 39 hours of video playback on the Pro
- 5:27Max. 39 hours? Wow. That's up from, what, 33
- 5:31on the 16 Pro Max? Correct. A significant jump.
- 5:34The review mentioned real world use. Unplugging
- 5:37at 7 .30 a .m. Using it for five hours screen
- 5:39on time and still having 50 % left at nearly
- 5:429 p .m. That's amazing You could genuinely forget
- 5:45your charger for a day. Maybe even push two days
- 5:47with later use for those creators They're targeting
- 5:49that's huge shoot all day edit on the go. No
- 5:52battery anxiety. It really makes it a mobile
- 5:54workstation plus Faster 40 watt wire charging
- 5:58helps to 50 % in 20 minutes. Okay. Okay, so power
- 6:01battery thermals All checks for the pro user.
- 6:04What about the camera still the main draw? Definitely
- 6:06still a focus. Three rear cameras, all 48 megapixels
- 6:10now main, wide angle and telephoto. But there's
- 6:13a change. The telephoto is now 4x zoom, not 5x
- 6:16like before. That's a hundred millimeter equivalent.
- 6:18Why the change? 4x instead of 5x? The thinking
- 6:21is it's actually better for portraits. Makes
- 6:22them feel just right, according to the review.
- 6:25And because it's 48 megapixels, they added a
- 6:272x crop mode on that telephoto lens. Ah, so you
- 6:30still get more reach. Yeah, it gives you an effective
- 6:328x zoom, like a 200 millimeter lens. So photographing
- 6:35something far away, like, you know, Alcatraz
- 6:38from across the bay, it won't just be a tiny
- 6:40speck anymore. It'll actually be recognizable.
- 6:42That's a practical improvement for sure. And
- 6:45video calls. Anything new there? Yes. Center
- 6:47stage is now on all iPhone 17 models. It's that
- 6:51feature where the camera follows you if you move
- 6:53around during a video call. Oh, I like that feature.
- 6:55Yeah. And it can even automatically switch to
- 6:57a wider landscape view if someone else joins
- 7:00you in the frame. Pretty slick for FaceTime or
- 7:02Zoom calls. OK, so the hardware sounds incredibly
- 7:05capable, powerful, great battery, amazing cameras.
- 7:08But the review mentioned a catch, right? The
- 7:11AI. Ah, yes. The elephant in the room, or maybe
- 7:14the less intelligent assistant in the room, Siri.
- 7:18This is where it gets really interesting. Despite
- 7:20some updates, Siri still feels miles behind the
- 7:23competition in generative AI. So compared to
- 7:26what Google's doing with Gemini on the Pixel,
- 7:28for instance. Exactly. Think about the Pixel
- 7:3010 Pro. It has things like Magic Q, suggesting
- 7:34text messages based on your emails or pixel screenshots
- 7:37that can summarize info or remind you about things
- 7:39you screenshotted. It's deeply integrated, proactive
- 7:43AI. And Siri isn't quite there yet, even with
- 7:46Apple intelligence. It seems Apple's approach
- 7:48is more about specific features using AI rather
- 7:52than a truly conversational, anticipatory assistant
- 7:54like Gemini. The review basically says there's
- 7:57a big gap, a void, where a truly next -gen Siri
- 8:00should be. That feels like a potential weakness,
- 8:03especially with AI moving so fast everywhere
- 8:06else. It's like having this amazing hardware,
- 8:08but the software brain is lagging. That's a good
- 8:11way to put it. And while maybe people aren't
- 8:13buying phones just for AI today, that could change
- 8:15really fast. It could become a serious competitive
- 8:17disadvantage soon. Oh, and one other little detail
- 8:20the review noted. The number of terms and conditions
- 8:22you agree to just to use the phone. Two mandatory
- 8:25ones, seven more for Apple Cash, another for
- 8:28Apple Pay. Quite the list. Huh. The digital paperwork
- 8:32never ends. So wrapping up on the iPhone 17 Pro,
- 8:37it sounds like an incredible specialized tool,
- 8:40like maybe a high -end professional camera rig.
- 8:43That's a great analogy. fantastic if you're the
- 8:45pro who needs every single advanced feature and
- 8:48that massive battery. But if you're just taking
- 8:50everyday photos, browsing, maybe hanging a picture
- 8:53frame. Then the standard iPhone 17 or maybe even
- 8:56that new super thin air model gives you a lot
- 8:58of the same core experience, especially that
- 9:00great screen for a lot less money. The pro moniker
- 9:04really means something specific this year. Fascinating
- 9:07shift. Okay, let's move to the wrist. Story number
- 9:09two from the Morningstar. The Apple Watch refresh,
- 9:11we've got the Ultra 3, Series 11, and the SE
- 9:133. Lots happening here too. Yeah, a really strong
- 9:16lineup update. And the star, arguably in terms
- 9:19of like groundbreaking features, is the Apple
- 9:21Watch Ultra 3. The big news is satellite connectivity.
- 9:24Emergency SOS via satellite. On a watch. That's
- 9:27huge. That only came to the iPhone a few years
- 9:29ago. Right. It's a massive deal for anyone who
- 9:32spends time outdoors, away from cell signal.
- 9:34Hikers, climbers, backpackers. Imagine being
- 9:37able to contact emergency services directly from
- 9:39your watch if you're stranded. And it doesn't
- 9:42need a cellular plan for that SOS part, right?
- 9:44Correct. Free for two years. No cell plan needed
- 9:47for the emergency function itself. You do need
- 9:50a plan if you want to use satellite for non -emergency
- 9:53stuff like sharing location, but the SOS is standalone.
- 9:57Needs a clear sky, but the watch helps you find
- 9:59a satellite. Wow. That's not just a feature,
- 10:02that could literally be a lifesaver, a genuine
- 10:04last line of defense if your phone is dead or
- 10:06broken. Absolutely. Plus, the Ultra 3 gets 5G
- 10:09for better cellular performance when you do have
- 10:12signal, and the display bezel is smaller, 24
- 10:14% reduced they say. Looks more modern. And little
- 10:17details too, like the seconds hand ticking in
- 10:19always -on mode. Yep, they brought that over.
- 10:22And battery life gets a nice bump too. up to
- 10:2442 hours of normal use compared to 36 on the
- 10:27Ultra 2. 42 hours. So you could realistically
- 10:29do a weekend trip without packing the charger.
- 10:32Comfortably, yeah. Maybe even push into a third
- 10:34day. Really solidifies its position for multi
- 10:37-day adventures. Price stays the same, $799.
- 10:40Okay, so Ultra 3. The adventurer's ultimate watch.
- 10:45What about the everyday workhorse, the Series
- 10:4611? The Series 11 gets probably the most requested
- 10:49upgrade. Better battery life it jumps from 18
- 10:53hours on the series 10 to 24 hours of normal
- 10:55use finally So you can actually wear it all day
- 10:58track your sleep and not have it die before you
- 11:00wake up That's the goal real world tests mentioned
- 11:03in the review even pushed it to 27 32 hours sometimes
- 11:06It's thanks to a bigger battery inside about
- 11:089 11 percent larger capacity. That's a genuine
- 11:10quality of life improved definitely Any other
- 11:13Series 11 upgrades? The glass on the Aluminum
- 11:15models is apparently twice as scratch resistant,
- 11:18which is nice. It also gets 5G support, like
- 11:20the Ultra. And of course, all the new WatchOS
- 11:2226 software features like hypertension notifications,
- 11:25the sleep score, those come to compatible older
- 11:27models too. Series 11 starts at $399. Got it.
- 11:32So, if the Ultra 3 is the rugged SUV and the
- 11:35Series 11 is the reliable sedan, then the SE3
- 11:39sounds like the zippy, feature -packed compact
- 11:42car. The review called it the real winner. I
- 11:45think that's spot on. Apple seems to be positioning
- 11:48the SE3 to really drive adoption, especially
- 11:50since smartwatch sales overall have kind of plateaued.
- 11:53It got a massive glow up, as the review put it.
- 11:56Glow up how? What's new? Okay, get this. For
- 11:59the first time, the SE gets an always -on display.
- 12:02Big one. It also gets the double -tap gesture,
- 12:05wrist temperature sensing, sleep apnea detection
- 12:07capability, fast charging, optional 5G. Oh, wait.
- 12:10Always -on display and double -tap on the SE.
- 12:12That's huge. Isn't it? Plus... Four times more
- 12:15crack -resistant glass. It's bringing so many
- 12:17features down from the more expensive model.
- 12:18And the price, still kept it low, starts at just
- 12:21$249. It's an incredible value proposition. Seriously,
- 12:25for most people looking for an Apple Watch, the
- 12:26SE3 is probably the one to buy now. It makes
- 12:28the ecosystem way more accessible. That's amazing.
- 12:31Okay, great updates across the board for Apple
- 12:33Watch. Let's move to our third and final story
- 12:36from the Morningstar. Amazon and AI. They've
- 12:40launched something called an AI Creative Partner.
- 12:43Sounds intriguing. Yeah, this is really interesting.
- 12:45It's essentially a new chatbot style AI assistant
- 12:49specifically for advertisers on Amazon. They're
- 12:52framing it as a creative partner and strategist.
- 12:55It's in beta now free to use within Amazon's
- 12:58create a studio platform a creative partner.
- 13:00So what does it actually do? Is it just writing
- 13:02ad copy? Oh, it's way more than that It's designed
- 13:04to handle a whole range of tasks like product
- 13:08research audience research brainstorming taglines
- 13:11creating storyboards and then actually generating
- 13:13the ads splay ads video ads complete with custom
- 13:16images background music even AI voiceovers It
- 13:19can theoretically put together an entire marketing
- 13:21campaign Wow. Okay, that's comprehensive like
- 13:24having a mini agency in a chat window. But what
- 13:26makes it particularly Amazon? The data. That's
- 13:29the crucial part. It taps directly into Amazon's
- 13:33massive pool of retail data shopper behavior,
- 13:36purchase history, search trends, all those customer
- 13:39shopper signals that only Amazon has. Ah, so
- 13:42it's not just using generic AI models, it's leveraging
- 13:46Amazon's specific knowledge of what people buy
- 13:49and why. Exactly. It combines that unique retail
- 13:52data with powerful foundation models like Amazon
- 13:55Nova and Anthropix Claude to create ads that
- 13:58are potentially much more targeted and effective
- 14:00than what a generic tool could produce. So who
- 14:03is this for? Big brands. Well, big brands like
- 14:06Nestle Health Science are testing it and praising
- 14:08it. But Amazon says the main goal is actually
- 14:10to help small and medium sized businesses. You
- 14:13know, the ones that don't have huge marketing
- 14:14departments or budgets. Right. Giving them access
- 14:16to sophisticated tools they couldn't afford before.
- 14:19Democratizing advertising, essentially. That
- 14:21seems to be the pitch. Giving smaller sellers
- 14:23strategic, high quality, creative support. The
- 14:26example given was an outdoor gear retailer just
- 14:29feeding the AI some product info and brand guidelines.
- 14:32And it spits out taglines, concepts, maybe even
- 14:34a video ad. Pretty much. And Amazon is claiming
- 14:37that early users are seeing, on average, a 12
- 14:40% increase in sales from the campaigns created
- 14:43with this AI partner. 12%. That's significant.
- 14:46Huge potential for speed and efficiency gains
- 14:48for businesses. But doesn't this raise that familiar
- 14:51question? The sea of sameness question. Yeah.
- 14:54If everyone starts using the same AI tool, even
- 14:56if it's pulling from Amazon data, want all the
- 14:59ads start looking kind of similar? How do brands
- 15:02stand out? It's a valid concern. Amazon's response
- 15:05is that the personalization based on their specific
- 15:08data, plus the ability for brands to guide the
- 15:10AI, will actually lead to more experimentation
- 15:13and variation, not less. Because it's cheaper
- 15:16and faster to create stuff, brands can try more
- 15:18things. Maybe. It also brings up the other big
- 15:22AI debate, augmentation versus replacement, right?
- 15:24Especially for human creatives, copywriters,
- 15:27designers. Absolutely. Amazon frames it as augmentation,
- 15:29a tool to help marketers. But it definitely fuels
- 15:32the ongoing conversation about AI's role in creative
- 15:34fields and potential job impacts down the line.
- 15:37It's like giving someone a super powered assistant.
- 15:40How long before the assistant can just do the
- 15:42whole job? Fascinating, and maybe a little unnerving.
- 15:45It's a space we'll be watching very closely.
- 15:47The intersection of AI efficiency and human creativity
- 15:49is really heating up. Definitely. Okay, before
- 15:52we wrap things up, one more quick shout out to
- 15:55another fantastic new sponsor, Skony. Ah, yes,
- 15:59Skony. Premium golf shoes. If you need top performance
- 16:03and serious style on the course, Skony is definitely
- 16:06a brand to know. For sure. Check out their collection
- 16:08at scony .com. That's S -K -O -N -I dot dot com.
- 16:13And just for connecting the Dots listeners, use
- 16:15the promo code SNARFL, S -N -A -R -F -U -L, for
- 16:1915 % off your entire purchase. Another great
- 16:21deal for golfers. Excellent. Alright, so let's
- 16:23quickly recap the big takeaways from our Morning
- 16:25Star Report today. First, we looked at the iPhone
- 16:2717 Pro, seeing how it's becoming more of a specialized
- 16:30tool for creators, while the standard iPhone
- 16:3317 and the new Air are offering compelling value
- 16:35with similar core features, especially that great
- 16:38screen. Then we jumped to the Apple Watch. The
- 16:40Ultra 3 bringing potentially life -saving satellite
- 16:43SOS for adventurers. The Series 11 finally delivering
- 16:46solid all day and night battery life for everyday
- 16:49users. And the SE3 emerging as a real value champion,
- 16:53packing features like an always on display and
- 16:56double tap into that affordable $249 price point.
- 16:59A huge glow up there. And finally, Amazon's AI
- 17:03creative partner, aiming to shake up the advertising
- 17:05world by giving businesses, especially smaller
- 17:08ones, powerful AI tools fueled by unique retail
- 17:11data to create campaigns more easily and effectively.
- 17:14These stories really show how tech is evolving
- 17:17on multiple fronts, right? Highly specialized
- 17:19tools at the top end, but also bringing powerful
- 17:21features down to more accessible levels, and
- 17:24AI weaving itself deeper into business and creativity.
- 17:27It directly impacts the choices you make when
- 17:29buying tech, the tools you might use for your
- 17:30business, or just understanding the landscape
- 17:32that's changing around us so quickly. And that
- 17:34Amazon story in particular leaves us with a thought.
- 17:37As AI becomes this incredibly capable partner,
- 17:40helping us create everything from emails to ad
- 17:42campaigns. Yeah. unlock unprecedented levels
- 17:45of personalized creativity and efficiency? Or
- 17:48is there a risk that relying too much on these
- 17:51powerful algorithms might, over time, smooth
- 17:54out the unexpected, quirky, truly original edges
- 17:57that often define breakthrough human creativity?
- 18:01Efficiency versus originality. That's definitely
- 18:03something to keep thinking about as these tools
- 18:05become more integrated into everything we do.
