- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Good morning, good afternoon, or good
- 0:17evening, wherever you're tuning in. It's Thursday,
- 0:19May 15th, 2025. Welcome to Connecting the Dots,
- 0:23the show from your friends here at Snarful Solutions
- 0:25Group in Sacramento, where we... break down the
- 0:28day's tech stories, and figure out what they
- 0:29mean for you. I'm Alex. And I'm Morgan. Yeah,
- 0:32joining you from sunny Sacramento. Definitely
- 0:34warming up today, expecting about 85 degrees,
- 0:36I think. Nice. OK, before we jump in, just a
- 0:39quick look at the markets. The Dow closed yesterday.
- 0:42That was Wednesday the 14th at 42051 .06. And
- 0:47the S &P 500 finished up at 592 .58. All right.
- 0:51So today, we're tackling three pretty big stories
- 0:54making noise in the tech world. Yep. First up,
- 0:56YouTube and how they're using AI artificial intelligence
- 1:00to tweet the ads you see. Then we'll look at
- 1:02CoreWeave, that AI infrastructure giant, some
- 1:05surprising numbers in their latest financial
- 1:07report. And finally, the trading platform eToro.
- 1:10They just hit the NASDAQ. We'll see how that
- 1:11went. Let's connect these dots to what's happening
- 1:14in your world. OK, let's start with YouTube.
- 1:16They've announced something called peak points.
- 1:20Google's Gemini AI. What's the story here? Right.
- 1:23So the core idea, it's actually pretty interesting.
- 1:26They're using Gemini AI, which is Google's advanced
- 1:29AI model to analyze videos. It looks at things
- 1:32like specific frames, the transcript, basically
- 1:36trying to figure out the exact moments when viewers
- 1:38are most engaged, like really paying attention.
- 1:41OK. So it's watching the video almost like a
- 1:44person would to see what parts are the most captivating.
- 1:47Sort of, yeah. It identifies these peak points
- 1:50of attention. And the plan is for advertisers
- 1:52to then target their ads to play immediately
- 1:55after one of those moments. So the thinking is,
- 1:58if you're really into what you just saw, you
- 2:00might be more receptive to an ad right after.
- 2:03Exactly. That's the hope for advertisers. More
- 2:05engagement leads to, theoretically, more impressions,
- 2:08higher click -through rates, better results for
- 2:10their ad spend. Makes sense. What about for us
- 2:13watching YouTube? Does this actually change the
- 2:16experience? Could it be better? Well, that's
- 2:18the million dollar question, isn't it? YouTube's
- 2:21betting that if an ad follows content you are
- 2:23genuinely hooked on, it might feel less like
- 2:26an interruption. Maybe even more relevant. Less
- 2:29jarring, perhaps. Possibly. And... There's a
- 2:32creator angle, too. If those click -through rates
- 2:34do go up because of this better timing, then
- 2:37the creators could potentially earn more money
- 2:39from those ads on their videos. Precisely. It
- 2:42directly impacts their monetization. This feels
- 2:44like it fits into a bigger trend, though. It's
- 2:46not just YouTube tweaking ads, is it? Oh, absolutely
- 2:49not. This is part of a much larger strategy we're
- 2:52seeing from Alphabet, YouTube's parent company.
- 2:55They are integrating AI everywhere to, well,
- 2:58improve monetization. We saw that in their recent
- 3:00earnings, right? Yeah, they had a strong first
- 3:02quarter overall revenue up and YouTube ad revenue
- 3:05specifically climbed to like 8 .9 billion dollars.
- 3:09So finding new ways to make ads more effective
- 3:12is key. Especially with all the competition heating
- 3:14up, like with AI startups in search getting big
- 3:17valuations. Exactly. And Google's using Gemini
- 3:20elsewhere too, like that on -device AI Gemini
- 3:22Nano to fight fraudulent websites. So, peak points
- 3:25is just one more piece of their broader push
- 3:27to leverage AI across the board. Got it. Okay,
- 3:31let's shift over to CoreWeave. We've talked about
- 3:32them before. Big player in AI cloud infrastructure,
- 3:36backed by NVIDIA. They just had their first earnings
- 3:38report as a public company. How did that look?
- 3:40The top line number is pretty staggering, actually.
- 3:43In the first quarter of 2025, their revenue just
- 3:47exploded, up 420 % compared to last year. Wow,
- 3:51420%. Yeah, hit $981 .6 million. That was way
- 3:56above what analysts were predicting, which was
- 3:57closer to $853 million. It just shows the absolutely
- 4:02massive demand for AI computing power right now.
- 4:05Okay, huge growth. But again, there was another
- 4:07side to that report. It wasn't all smooth sailing.
- 4:09That's right. Despite the incredible revenue,
- 4:11they also reported a pretty significant net loss.
- 4:14Three hundred and fourteen point six million
- 4:15dollars is bigger than their loss last year.
- 4:18Significantly bigger. Yeah. Last year in the
- 4:20same period, it was about one hundred and twenty
- 4:22nine million dollars. Now, a big chunk of that
- 4:24increase, about one hundred seventy seven million
- 4:26dollars, was tied to stock based compensation
- 4:30costs from their IPO. OK, so. Costs associated
- 4:34with going public really inflated that loss number.
- 4:37How did the market reacted the huge revenue went
- 4:40out? Well, interestingly, no, even though they
- 4:43smashed the revenue expectations their stock
- 4:45price actually dipped About seven percent in
- 4:48after hours trading. Hmm So investors are maybe
- 4:51a bit wary about the spending or future profitability
- 4:54despite the growth? It seems that way. It suggests
- 4:57that, you know, while the growth is impressive,
- 4:59there are real concerns about the bottom line
- 5:01and the path to profitability. Investors are
- 5:03definitely scrutinizing the spending. What does
- 5:05this tell us about the whole AI infrastructure
- 5:07space then? Well, connecting the dots here, CoreWeave's
- 5:10story really highlights two things. One, the
- 5:13absolutely ferocious demand for AI infrastructure.
- 5:15They've got massive deals like with open AI,
- 5:19potentially billions of dollars involved. Right,
- 5:20that new five -year deal and another big one
- 5:22signed recently too. Exactly. But the second
- 5:25thing it highlights is the immense financial
- 5:28pressure and the level of scrutiny these high
- 5:30-growth companies face once they go public. The
- 5:33market wants to see not just growth, but a clear
- 5:36path to making money. And they're not slowing
- 5:38down on spending, are they? Are they planning
- 5:40to raise more money? No, they're doubling down,
- 5:42basically. They're looking to raise about $1
- 5:44.5 billion in debt. And that's to fuel some really
- 5:48ambitious expansion. We're talking capital expenditures
- 5:52estimated between $20 billion and $23 billion
- 5:55just for this year. $20 to $23 billion. Yeah.
- 5:58Mainly to seriously ramp up their data center
- 6:01power capacity. It's a huge bet on the AI wave
- 6:04continuing to build. Okay, one more story to
- 6:06connect today. Let's talk about eToro, the stock
- 6:09and crypto trading platform. They just debuted
- 6:11on the Nasdaq. How did that go? It went very
- 6:13well, actually. A strong debut. Their shares
- 6:15started trading Wednesday and they closed the
- 6:17day at $67. And the IPO price was? $52. So that's
- 6:21a jump of nearly 29 % on day one. Pretty impressive
- 6:25start. Gives them a market cap over $5 .4 billion.
- 6:27Solid. Was there a lot of investor interest leading
- 6:30up to it? seems like it. They, eToro and its
- 6:34backers sold almost 12 million shares raising
- 6:36about 310 million dollars and apparently the
- 6:40demand was high enough that they actually increased
- 6:42their fundraising target and priced the shares
- 6:45above the initial range they were looking at.
- 6:47Always a good sign. Now, eToro is pretty well
- 6:49known for crypto trading. Is that still a big
- 6:51part of their business? Oh, yeah. Definitely
- 6:53still significant. The numbers are interesting,
- 6:55though. The percentage of their trading commissions
- 6:57coming from crypto is expected to dip slightly,
- 7:00maybe to around 37 % this quarter, down from
- 7:0443 % last year. OK, so a smaller piece of the
- 7:06pie proportionally. Proportionally, yes. But,
- 7:09and this is the key thing, their actual revenue
- 7:12from crypto trading absolutely soared in 2024.
- 7:15Went from like $3 .4 billion in 2023 up to $12
- 7:19.1 billion. Wow. Okay. So even if it's a smaller
- 7:22percentage, the total amount is way up. Exactly.
- 7:26So crypto remains a very important engine for
- 7:27them, even as the overall business mix might
- 7:30be shifting a little. So what's the bigger picture
- 7:32here? What does this successful IPO mean? Well,
- 7:35if you're connecting the dots. Some analysts
- 7:37see this as a positive signal for the IPO market
- 7:39overall. You know, there's been some uncertainty,
- 7:42especially with trade stuff like tariffs recently.
- 7:45So a sign that maybe the market's still open
- 7:46for new tech listings? Could be. It also definitely
- 7:50highlights the continued interest in retail investing,
- 7:53you know, regular people trading stocks and crypto
- 7:56online. And it shows crypto is still a major
- 7:58factor, even if its role is maybe evolving a
- 8:01bit. And it wasn't their first attempt to go
- 8:03public, right? That's right. Good point. They
- 8:05tried to go public back in 2021 through a SPAC
- 8:07merger, but that deal eventually fell apart.
- 8:11So this successful NASDAQ listing is a pretty
- 8:13big achievement for them after that earlier hurdle.
- 8:16Right. So quite a range today. We've got YouTube
- 8:19using sophisticated AI to try and make ads, well,
- 8:23maybe less annoying and more effective. Uh -huh.
- 8:25Trying to nail that timing. Than CoreWeave. Showing
- 8:28just explosive growth in AI infrastructure, but
- 8:31also the heavy cost investor scrutiny that come
- 8:33with it Yeah that balance between growth and
- 8:36profitability and finally e toro making a strong
- 8:40entrance to the public market kind of underscoring
- 8:42the ongoing strength of retail trading and the
- 8:46significant if evolving role of crypto. Each
- 8:49story really gives you a snapshot of these huge
- 8:52forces shaping tech right now, AI advancement,
- 8:55the economics of rapid scaling and how we interact
- 8:57with finance online. We hope this deep dive helped
- 9:01you connect some of those dots. Obviously, these
- 9:02are complex topics and just scratching the surface
