- 0:00Mark chapter 6. Jesus went out from there and
- 0:03came into his hometown, and his disciples followed him.
- 0:07When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and
- 0:10the many listeners were astonished, saying, Where did
- 0:13this man get these things? And what is this wisdom given to
- 0:16him, and such miracles as these performed by his hands?
- 0:21Is not this the Carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of
- 0:24James and Josephs, and Judas and Simon?
- 0:27Are not his sisters here with us?
- 0:29And they took offence at him. Jesus said to them, A prophet is
- 0:33not without honor except in his hometown and among his own
- 0:37relatives and in his own household.
- 0:39And he could do no miracle there, except that he laid his
- 0:42hands on a few sick people and healed them, and he wondered at
- 0:45their unbelief. And he was going around the
- 0:48villages teaching. And he summoned the 12 and began
- 0:52to send them out in pairs, and gave them authority over the
- 0:55unclean spirits. And he instructed them that they
- 0:58should take nothing for their journey except a mere staff, no
- 1:01bread, no bag, no money in their belt but to wear sandals.
- 1:06And he added, do not put on 2 tunics.
- 1:09And he said to them, wherever you enter a house, stay there
- 1:11until you leave town. Any place that does not receive
- 1:14you or listen to you as you go out from there, shake the dust
- 1:17off the soles of your feet for a testimony against them.
- 1:21They went out and preached that men should repent, and they were
- 1:24casting out many demons, and were anointing with oil many
- 1:27sick people and healing them. And King Herod heard of it, for
- 1:31his name had become well known. And people were saying John the
- 1:35Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous
- 1:38powers are at work in him. But others were saying he is
- 1:41Elijah, and others were saying he is a prophet, like one of the
- 1:45prophets of old. But when Herod heard of it, he
- 1:48kept saying, John whom I beheaded has risen.
- 1:52For Herod himself had sent and had John arrested and bound in
- 1:55prison on account of Herodias the wife of his brother Philip,
- 1:59because he had married her. For John had been saying to
- 2:02Herod, It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.
- 2:06Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to
- 2:08death, and could not do so. For Herod was afraid of John,
- 2:12knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him
- 2:15safe. And when he heard him, he was
- 2:17very perplexed, but he used to enjoy listening to him.
- 2:21A strategic day came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet
- 2:24for his Lords and military commanders and the leading men
- 2:27of Galilee. And when the daughter of
- 2:29Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and
- 2:32his dinner guest. And the king said to the girl,
- 2:35Ask me for whatever you want, and I will give it to you.
- 2:39And he swore to her, Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to
- 2:42you, up to half of my Kingdom. And she went out and said to her
- 2:45mother, What shall I ask for? And she said, The head of John
- 2:49the Baptist, immediately she came in a hurry to the king and
- 2:53asked, saying, I want you to give me at once the head of John
- 2:56the Baptist on a platter. And although the king was very
- 2:59sorry, yet because of his oaths and because of his dinner guest,
- 3:03he was unwilling to refuse her. Immediately the king sent an
- 3:06executioner and commanded him to bring back his head.
- 3:10And he went and had him beheaded in the prison, and brought his
- 3:14head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it
- 3:17to her mother. When his disciples heard about
- 3:20this, they came and took away his body and laid it in a tomb.
- 3:23The apostles gathered together with Jesus, and they reported to
- 3:26him all that they had done and taught.
- 3:28And he said to them, Come away by yourselves to a secluded
- 3:30place and rest awhile. For there were many people
- 3:34coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.
- 3:37They went away in the boat to a secluded place by themselves.
- 3:41The people saw them going, and many recognized them and ran
- 3:44there together on foot from all the cities, and got there ahead
- 3:47of them. When Jesus went ashore, he saw a
- 3:50large crowd, and he felt compassion for them, because
- 3:53they were like sheep without a shepherd.
- 3:55And he began to teach them many things.
- 3:58When it was already quite late, his disciples came to him and
- 4:00said, This place is desolate and it is already quite late.
- 4:04Send them away so that they may go into the surrounding
- 4:06countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.
- 4:10But he answered them, You give them something to eat.
- 4:14And they said to him, Shall we go and spend 200 denarii on
- 4:17bread and give them something to eat?
- 4:20And he said to them, How many loaves do you have?
- 4:22Go look. And when they found out, they
- 4:25said five and two fish. And he commanded them all to sit
- 4:28down by groups on the green grass.
- 4:31They sat down in groups of hundreds and of 50s.
- 4:34And he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up
- 4:37toward heaven, he blessed the food and broke the loaves.
- 4:40And He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them,
- 4:43and He divided up the 2 fish among them all.
- 4:46They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up 12 full
- 4:50baskets of the broken pieces and also of the fish.
- 4:53There were 5000 men who ate the loaves.
- 4:57Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and
- 4:59go ahead of Him to the other side of Bethsaida, while He
- 5:02Himself was sending the crowd away.
- 5:04After bidding them farewell, He left for the mountain to pray.
- 5:07When it was evening the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He
- 5:10was alone on the land, seeing them straining at the oars, for
- 5:14the wind was against them. At about the fourth watch of the
- 5:17night he came to them walking on the sea, and he intended to pass
- 5:21by them. But when they saw him walking on
- 5:23the sea they supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out, for
- 5:27they all saw him and were terrified.
- 5:29But immediately he spoke with him and said to them, Take
- 5:32courage it is I do not be afraid.
- 5:36Then he got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped, and
- 5:39they were utterly astonished, for they had not gained any
- 5:43insight from the incident of the loaves, but their heart was
- 5:46hardened when they had crossed over.
- 5:48They came to land at Geneseret and moored to the shore.
- 5:52When they got out of the boat, immediately the people
- 5:54recognized him and ran about the whole country, and began to
- 5:57carry here and there on their pallets those who were sick to
- 6:00the place they heard he was. Wherever he entered, villages or
- 6:03cities or countryside, they were laying the sick in the
- 6:06marketplaces and imploring him that they might just touch the
- 6:09fringe of his cloak, and as many as touched it were being cured.
