- 1:08Speaker 1: Rashan McDonald. Each Money Making Conversation talk show is about
- 1:12Speaker 1: entrepreneurship and entertainment. I provide the consumer and business owner
- 1:16Speaker 1: access to interviews with celebrities seeos, famous people, entrepreneurs and
- 1:21Speaker 1: industry decision makers. It is important to understand that everybody
- 1:24Speaker 1: travels a different path to success. That's because your brand
- 1:27Speaker 1: is different. The challenge you face in your life for
- 1:30Speaker 1: a difference. So stop reading other people's success stories to
- 1:33Speaker 1: start writing your own. Now you can be motivated by
- 1:36Speaker 1: their success. I believe me. I understand that because that
- 1:38Speaker 1: stories can offer direction and help you reach your goals
- 1:41Speaker 1: through your planning and your committed effort. But the interviews
- 1:44Speaker 1: I bring to your Money Making Conversations are all relatable
- 1:46Speaker 1: information to you as a listener about career and financial planning, entrepreneurship, motivation, leadership,
- 1:53Speaker 1: overcoming the arts, and more importantly, how to live a
- 1:56Speaker 1: bane of life. Balance life, something that I failed to
- 1:59Speaker 1: do for a time, and I think I got a
- 2:01Speaker 1: grip on it now. But next guest, they're on the phone.
- 2:04Speaker 1: There are a dynamic duo. They're very talented in their
- 2:07Speaker 1: separate world, but they on this show as a dynamic duo.
- 2:11Speaker 1: One is an accomplished actress and talented producer. They are
- 2:14Speaker 1: the founders of sugar Berry. Ticka Sumter stars in the
- 2:17Speaker 1: top rated ABC comedy sitcom mixes and hit movie Sonic
- 2:23Speaker 1: the Hedgehog. Did my daughter watched? She drugged me to
- 2:25Speaker 1: go see it. She's a she's in game designs or
- 2:27Speaker 1: any animated movie that's really good. I go out and
- 2:29Speaker 1: see it with her. Tyrandolph is an award winning executive
- 2:33Speaker 1: and former member of Facebook's Global Marketing Solutions team. She
- 2:37Speaker 1: is currently the executive vice president general manager for Kevin
- 2:40Speaker 1: Harts That's My Boy, Laugh Out Loud Network. On the
- 2:44Speaker 1: show today, they will be sharing that podcast I've listened to,
- 2:48Speaker 1: sugar Please welcome to money Making Conversation. The owners of
- 2:51Speaker 1: sugar Berry, tick A Sumter and Tyrandolf thank you so much.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Later that we want to thank you everywhere. First of all,
- 3:07Speaker 1: you know, thank you for taking the time, because you
- 3:10Speaker 1: know my show. You know, you just start things with ideas.
- 3:13Speaker 1: And twenty seventeen, I just was interviewing friends that I know,
- 3:17Speaker 1: and they were celebrities and I didn't know why I
- 3:19Speaker 1: was interviewing them, and uh, then I shut it down.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I said, I asked my staff ago, why are they
- 3:24Speaker 1: calling me? Because I don't even know why I'm talking
- 3:27Speaker 1: to him? And so I had to get a point
- 3:29Speaker 1: of view. And so the reason I was excited about
- 3:31Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about sugar Bear, but I want to
- 3:33Speaker 1: first talk about your relationships that you two have and
- 3:36Speaker 1: then the podcast sugar because you guys have a point
- 3:39Speaker 1: of view. And I went like, wow, they upfront, they
- 3:43Speaker 1: started it with the idea of a concept of who
- 3:46Speaker 1: they're talking to. So let's talk about the whole how
- 3:49Speaker 1: that process of creating that podcast shoot got started. Yeah,
- 3:55Speaker 1: I mean, well it was kind of it's weird. I
- 3:58Speaker 1: think it was the first it was Sugarberry, and then
- 4:02Speaker 1: we decided, you know, okay, out of this we can
- 4:05Speaker 1: have real conversations. So kind I got together through a
- 4:08Speaker 1: mutual friend of ours who introduced us, and I kind
- 4:12Speaker 1: of hitched throughout some kind of ideas that had on
- 4:14Speaker 1: the wall about creating the space for black mothers um
- 4:19Speaker 1: where we can be free to speak on anything we
- 4:21Speaker 1: need to speak on or sometimes we're not included in
- 4:24Speaker 1: all conversations, including you know, our bodies and and and
- 4:29Speaker 1: even being hospitalized with pregnancy, but even I VS. We're
- 4:33Speaker 1: just just somewhere to laugh and indulge in every everything
- 4:38Speaker 1: across the spectrum of motherhood and sisterhood. So you know
- 4:41Speaker 1: it's I love this idea, and we we came together
- 4:45Speaker 1: to create what Sugarberry is now in the sugar on Stitcher,
- 4:49Speaker 1: which is our podcast. So we just wanted to laugh.
- 4:52Speaker 1: And and also I think it's very therapeutic for both
- 4:55Speaker 1: of us as well as being mothers, but not only mothers,
- 4:58Speaker 1: but just human beings. You know, who are who are
- 5:02Speaker 1: career women in this world who needed an outlet and
- 5:05Speaker 1: if we we know, if we needed it, there's so
- 5:07Speaker 1: many other women who who who who who needs it
- 5:11Speaker 1: as well? Well you know tie your thoughts as well. Yeah, absolutely,
- 5:17Speaker 1: I mean I think, um, you know, Montika came up
- 5:19Speaker 1: with the idea for launching a platform and a community
- 5:24Speaker 1: you know that catered to you know, women of color
- 5:28Speaker 1: and black moms in particular. When I first set to
- 5:31Speaker 1: hear out there, when when we first got together and
- 5:34Speaker 1: she told me about the idea. You know, I'm a
- 5:36Speaker 1: skeptic ten nature, so I'm always looking to you know,
- 5:39Speaker 1: poke holes and a business idea. But what captured me,
- 5:44Speaker 1: that's what you've got business with. Yeah, let me tell
- 5:50Speaker 1: you with somebody who is opposite of all the towns
- 5:55Speaker 1: that you have. Yeah, you need someone to poke a
- 5:59Speaker 1: whole through everything. I want you? Why why nobody else
- 6:08Speaker 1: asking me why you want meet? Well? Well we we
- 6:13Speaker 1: we both had respect for this mutual friend. And I
- 6:16Speaker 1: was a huge fan of Kika's work, but I was
- 6:18Speaker 1: I was very skeptical about, you know, sort of the
- 6:20Speaker 1: digital publishing space. You know. I know that you know,
- 6:23Speaker 1: we as black women are you know, the fastest growing
- 6:27Speaker 1: segment of entrepreneurs of this country, but we also faced
- 6:29Speaker 1: the most hurdles when it comes to things like access
- 6:31Speaker 1: to capital, and I wanted to make sure when you know,
- 6:34Speaker 1: we were even as I was listening to the idea
- 6:37Speaker 1: before she invited me to, you know, become her partner,
- 6:40Speaker 1: I was ready to to sort of like poke the hole.
- 6:43Speaker 1: But what if she was talking? I found myself taking
- 6:45Speaker 1: off my business hat, and as a consumer, it just
- 6:48Speaker 1: resonated with me. I saw as um, you know, a
- 6:51Speaker 1: woman of color, as a new mom, someone who's up
- 6:54Speaker 1: really mobile and thinking about where do I invest my money?
- 6:56Speaker 1: Where do I find the resources you know, what products
- 6:59Speaker 1: and brand and um should I support? There was just
- 7:03Speaker 1: this sort of deficit of resources and particularly resources that
- 7:07Speaker 1: we're speaking to people who look like me and to
- 7:10Speaker 1: shared my experience. So you know, I said, hey, not
- 7:13Speaker 1: only am I interested in this, I would be your
- 7:15Speaker 1: first customer. And I think what's really informed all of
- 7:18Speaker 1: our efforts, you know, whether it's you know, the content
- 7:21Speaker 1: that we program on our site or you know, um,
- 7:24Speaker 1: you know what we're doing with the sugar or the
- 7:26Speaker 1: brand partnership that we're forming, it's all deeply personal, right.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Let's we want to make sure that when we're rolling
- 7:32Speaker 1: out conversations or content that it's stuff that we can
- 7:36Speaker 1: identify with. And and that's what I feel like I
- 7:38Speaker 1: could really resonated so far with it with the audience,
- 7:41Speaker 1: I think, um, you know, our community feels like we're
- 7:43Speaker 1: speaking with them and not ask them. We know. It's
- 7:46Speaker 1: great And I'm just joking about the relationship because options
- 7:50Speaker 1: do attract. And then you know, in business, what what
- 7:53Speaker 1: you guys both bringted their tables, a huge amount of
- 7:56Speaker 1: success and a huge amount of work ethic from from
- 7:58Speaker 1: different lanes, and and the fact that I love about
- 8:01Speaker 1: it because I've been tracking Chick a little bit. You know,
- 8:03Speaker 1: she's she produces a lot of projects, she pictures a
- 8:06Speaker 1: lot of things, and she has a strong entrepreneurial base.
- 8:08Speaker 1: And then you're coming from that Facebook side, which is
- 8:11Speaker 1: the beast of social media. So that that's a knowledge
- 8:14Speaker 1: that when you guys come together, that's almost like a
- 8:17Speaker 1: I can see why somebody would say you two need
- 8:19Speaker 1: to talk because you're emerging digital social Uh. You know
- 8:24Speaker 1: it's from a celebrity stand because it tickers a celebrity.
- 8:27Speaker 1: She's a brand, she's a visual brand, and it allows
- 8:29Speaker 1: you to get news articles and get interviews and then
- 8:32Speaker 1: all of a sudden you get on the show and
- 8:33Speaker 1: you tell your story. But the thing I always tell
- 8:36Speaker 1: people about the most successful black magazine right now currently
- 8:39Speaker 1: is Essence Magazine, and that's because it talks about women
- 8:43Speaker 1: of color, black women. It's point of view, and that's
- 8:46Speaker 1: what I love. When I heard your podcast and I
- 8:49Speaker 1: had to go to it, I said, I'm not gonna
- 8:50Speaker 1: interview YouTube and not listen to your brand. And one
- 8:54Speaker 1: of the things that stood out when interview was like,
- 8:56Speaker 1: when you guys say I hate being pregnant, and you know,
- 9:03Speaker 1: and you know you know, you know when you'll explain that. Okay, Look,
- 9:07Speaker 1: I'm happy to know you because you know, people would
- 9:12Speaker 1: say stuff you go that makes sense. They have the
- 9:15Speaker 1: right to say. I love being pregnant, but I hate
- 9:18Speaker 1: being pregnant. Okay, get this. I don't like the process.
- 9:21Speaker 1: I don't like the weight getting. I don't like the ankles,
- 9:24Speaker 1: I don't like I don't like you taking me that months.
- 9:26Speaker 1: If this could be done in a couple of hours,
- 9:28Speaker 1: we're good. So yeah, I mean, I think it's giving
- 9:36Speaker 1: you know, exactly what you said. It's giving um people
- 9:40Speaker 1: the place to be able to say things that they
- 9:43Speaker 1: normally couldn't say in public or just the face where
- 9:47Speaker 1: you know that's the truth, you know what I mean,
- 9:50Speaker 1: And we are able to say the truth, especially around
- 9:52Speaker 1: each other, because we're not gonna look at each other
- 9:54Speaker 1: inside I and and give judgment for what people have
- 9:57Speaker 1: been saying for years on the other end already. Mean,
- 10:00Speaker 1: like if people say my kid is a terrorist, it's like,
- 10:03Speaker 1: oh wow, that's funny, you know, And then sometimes when
- 10:07Speaker 1: when when we say it, it's like, oh my god,
- 10:09Speaker 1: you're a terrible mom. So we wanted to give you know,
- 10:12Speaker 1: my mother's a space where they can be super honest.
- 10:15Speaker 1: And I was like so in love with that. I
- 10:17Speaker 1: was like, I'm a fan. I'm a fan because because
- 10:20Speaker 1: anytime I always tell people is that I'm always always
- 10:23Speaker 1: tell people wake up stupid, so I can accept information
- 10:26Speaker 1: if you wake up smart all the time. You know,
- 10:28Speaker 1: you know, who are you gonna listen to if you
- 10:30Speaker 1: think you're the smartest guy in the room all the time.
- 10:32Speaker 1: But I was making going to an environment and gain information.
- 10:37Speaker 1: And so when I was listening and first of all,
- 10:39Speaker 1: you know on the podcast, I listened to you when
- 10:41Speaker 1: you Gave Love to Megan the Stallion because sugar album
- 10:45Speaker 1: I c d O by the same name. So like,
- 10:49Speaker 1: so when I was listening to it, I was like,
- 10:52Speaker 1: because I got first of all, I have six sisters. Okay,
- 10:55Speaker 1: so no, you're talking about a guy who has been
- 10:57Speaker 1: around women all his life. Okay, four of them are
- 10:59Speaker 1: older than me. And so so here I am going,
- 11:02Speaker 1: you know something, this is so dead on because African
- 11:06Speaker 1: American women and women of color have always had to
- 11:09Speaker 1: accept information, had to accept clothing, clothes, style, this except
- 11:13Speaker 1: hair styles had to except uh. And then when we
- 11:16Speaker 1: when we pioneered and said, you know, stop. I want
- 11:20Speaker 1: to talk about our needs you hit home runs. I
- 11:23Speaker 1: really do believe you two are hitting the home run
- 11:27Speaker 1: with what you're doing with your podcast. That's just something
- 11:30Speaker 1: just telling you that I've done a lot of great
- 11:33Speaker 1: things in our life. I produced a lot of great
- 11:34Speaker 1: things in the life. You guys are onto something very
- 11:37Speaker 1: very special, And I just wanted to say that we're
- 11:38Speaker 1: gonna continue this interview, but I want to let you
- 11:40Speaker 1: know that I was laughing. I was like, are you
- 11:45Speaker 1: guys are natural? First of all, articulate, everything was very clear. Okay,
- 11:54Speaker 1: you know, you know, because you know exactly we don't
- 11:57Speaker 1: even talked about the fact that both of you guys
- 11:59Speaker 1: are malls. You know, y'all start talking about that, you know.
- 12:01Speaker 1: It was like, you know, I said, how do you
- 12:04Speaker 1: know in life we're always caught up in looks? Were
- 12:07Speaker 1: caught up in and um and because you know when
- 12:11Speaker 1: i'm when I look at it, because you know, she's
- 12:12Speaker 1: a star, you know, she's beautiful. I wouldn't even think
- 12:15Speaker 1: she had a child. So I listened to the pocket.
- 12:19Speaker 1: When when did she dropped this time? So something like
- 12:25Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm heavily in form very well, you know,
- 12:33Speaker 1: So I'm just I'm just having a good time laughing
- 12:35Speaker 1: at both of you guys going sty're crazy. I said,
- 12:38Speaker 1: they're crazy, they're crazy and so and so yeah, yeah,
- 12:43Speaker 1: thank you, thank you for that. Well that's crazy in
- 12:45Speaker 1: a good way because now me as a man, I
- 12:49Speaker 1: can have a good time and I can get a window.
- 12:52Speaker 1: You know. The beautiful thing about it when you know,
- 12:54Speaker 1: Steve Harvey and I produced this book I collectively to
- 12:57Speaker 1: think like a man. The reason it was successful be us.
- 13:00Speaker 1: We opened up information lane about what men really think
- 13:04Speaker 1: about women and dating. Okay, that's why the book sold
- 13:07Speaker 1: three million comics. And so because you two are going
- 13:11Speaker 1: to open up that when all opening up, let me
- 13:13Speaker 1: just let me say it. Now you're opening up this lane.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Don't stop. Don't stop. You can't stay Tico tie T
- 13:24Speaker 1: and T. You gotta keep going, girl, gotta keep calling.
- 13:33Speaker 1: You know, you know, optimism and suspect, ostimism and suspect.
- 13:36Speaker 1: I don't know. I love it. Why you love it?
- 13:40Speaker 1: I'm not sure why you sure we're gonna be back
- 13:47Speaker 1: with more money. Can't make a conversational. I'm enjoying my
- 13:50Speaker 1: conversation with ticking. They have a fantastic podcast. Called sugar
- 13:57Speaker 1: and then we come back we talk about sugar barries.
- 13:58Speaker 1: They are wonderful. They are a brilliant in their own
- 14:01Speaker 1: career lanes, but they are amazing on this podcast. We'll
- 14:04Speaker 1: be right back. Women of color, don't go nowhere. It's

- 16:09Speaker 1: my ladies here Uh one, I didn't even know she
- 16:12Speaker 1: was praying the child. You know, so I listen to
- 16:14Speaker 1: our podcast, all this information to be downloaded on me. Um,
- 16:19Speaker 1: that's t n T. That's Tika and ticket something. Tyrandall
- 16:23Speaker 1: brilliant on fields. You know her for mixing and a sonic.
- 16:27Speaker 1: The Hedge Hard Hit movie made over three hundred million
- 16:29Speaker 1: dollars worldwide hundred and thirty six million dollars locally. Um.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Tie of the fact that she's even tied to Facebook
- 16:37Speaker 1: makes you are amazing. But she's also tied to another
- 16:40Speaker 1: amazing guy, Kevin Hard laugh out Loud Network. She's a
- 16:43Speaker 1: general manager and executive vice president. Please welcome back to
- 16:46Speaker 1: the show. Let's talk about uh, further expanding into the lifestyle,
- 16:51Speaker 1: the culture of women of colors sugar berries talk about that.
- 16:57Speaker 1: You take that one? Sure? Um so you know so so,
- 17:01Speaker 1: Like I said, Fantica came with the idea and we
- 17:04Speaker 1: first started talking about it. What was interesting is we
- 17:07Speaker 1: had seen similar efforts really scale and grain traction with
- 17:12Speaker 1: you know, non black women. So you have the Groops
- 17:15Speaker 1: of the World with Sinnis Paltrow. Um, you know Jessica album,
- 17:19Speaker 1: who are a great you know fan of his his
- 17:22Speaker 1: launch and scale honest company in a really interesting way,
- 17:25Speaker 1: Corney Kardashian launch, and we said, where is ours right?
- 17:29Speaker 1: And to your point about UM, you know, sort of
- 17:31Speaker 1: Tika being a huge celebrity but also just so well
- 17:35Speaker 1: loved by the community and very respected, it was who
- 17:38Speaker 1: better to helm this and she's been so open and
- 17:40Speaker 1: honest about, you know, her own experiences, and then we
- 17:43Speaker 1: wanted to make sure those that sort of you know,
- 17:45Speaker 1: the one thing you wanted to separate, Yes, you wanted
- 17:48Speaker 1: to be aspirational but very inclusive UM. And so on
- 17:52Speaker 1: one side of this sugar Bearer, you really feel when
- 17:55Speaker 1: we launch UM. There's a video on the site where
- 17:58Speaker 1: we talk about the reason for being in and we
- 18:00Speaker 1: say this is a love letter to black mom. And
- 18:03Speaker 1: so this really is a passion project UM, with us
- 18:06Speaker 1: wanting to provide the resources that we were looking for
- 18:09Speaker 1: that we didn't have. On the flip side of that, however, though,
- 18:12Speaker 1: there was this grounding and this being really really good business.
- 18:16Speaker 1: You know, Black African American women build a tremendous amount
- 18:19Speaker 1: of purchasing power. UM. You know, if African Americans alone
- 18:23Speaker 1: work country, they would be the fifteenth largest economy in
- 18:25Speaker 1: the world, and African American women control the lion share
- 18:29Speaker 1: of that purchasing power, and so the impact that we
- 18:32Speaker 1: can have on consumer goods, on media consumption. You talk
- 18:36Speaker 1: about face both look at how Red Table Talk literally
- 18:39Speaker 1: resides the watch platform, or when you look at you know,
- 18:43Speaker 1: network television and the success of the likes of This
- 18:46Speaker 1: Is Us and Blackish and now Mixed Ish, you see
- 18:49Speaker 1: that it's not just that we influence our own purchasing behavior,
- 18:53Speaker 1: but we have a tremendous amount of general market um
- 18:56Speaker 1: purchase influence. And so in founding Sugar Barrier, we wanted
- 18:59Speaker 1: to really develop and embraced um, you know, black moms
- 19:03Speaker 1: and tell a different story about black motherhood or a
- 19:05Speaker 1: myriad of different stories. But we also wanted to connect
- 19:08Speaker 1: with brands and advertisers and media companies in a real
- 19:12Speaker 1: way and say, here's our community. Let's communicate to them
- 19:15Speaker 1: with care and nuance. Right. You know, it's really interesting.
- 19:19Speaker 1: One of my other favorite shows, romantic shows is a
- 19:22Speaker 1: Cherish Today. I don't know if you've seen that series.
- 19:24Speaker 1: That's one of the most ability that beautiful, beautiful, I'll
- 19:31Speaker 1: just laid down there. I'm feeling your ladies I'm feeling
- 19:33Speaker 1: you your boart feeling both of you guys. Is the
- 19:38Speaker 1: is the only thing about it is that when we're
- 19:40Speaker 1: talking about you know, you're welcoming and love and environment
- 19:43Speaker 1: for moms of color by providing content surrounding health, which
- 19:46Speaker 1: is important, wellness, finances, self care, travel, and so much more.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Now let's go back to let's talk about the health first,
- 19:54Speaker 1: because you know right now during this pandemic, you know,
- 19:57Speaker 1: immediately more African Americans affect are dying because of the pandemic.
- 20:02Speaker 1: What do you talk about when when your what is
- 20:04Speaker 1: your platform for health when it comes to women of color. Well,
- 20:09Speaker 1: you know, some of our articles have been about real
- 20:13Speaker 1: immediate financial health, like the financial literacy of it all
- 20:16Speaker 1: with the stimulus check or just COVID nineteen, how do
- 20:20Speaker 1: you apply for unemployment or or things like that. So
- 20:24Speaker 1: we've been really trying to drive articles like that out.
- 20:28Speaker 1: We've been trying to talk about the disparities. I mean,
- 20:31Speaker 1: that's what we do anyway, we talk about the disparity.
- 20:34Speaker 1: But that's one way we've been trying to get information
- 20:37Speaker 1: out to the people who need it most. We know
- 20:40Speaker 1: it's really because in the business as we live that
- 20:43Speaker 1: you know, it's a male dominated business. You know, where
- 20:45Speaker 1: there's a producing executives, and but women are becoming you know,
- 20:51Speaker 1: they are as far as entrepreneur women of color. What what,
- 20:56Speaker 1: I'm not putting you on the spot to say, you
- 20:57Speaker 1: guys are the experts. But you all my sugar team. Okay.
- 21:00Speaker 1: So I'm gonna come to you, Okay. And so I
- 21:04Speaker 1: got I got, I got megastar over here, I got
- 21:06Speaker 1: Mega Mega produced over here, I got Mega executive over here,
- 21:09Speaker 1: Megastar Mega executive. Okay, y'all dynamic team. So with that
- 21:14Speaker 1: being said, why why is it? Why? Why how African
- 21:17Speaker 1: American women feel they can do it? Then they don't
- 21:20Speaker 1: have to work for anybody anymore. When they've been portrayed
- 21:23Speaker 1: you know as as and you know Fams Maids or
- 21:26Speaker 1: overweight on television a lot or the or the lovable
- 21:29Speaker 1: character that's always funny. Other than they have been very
- 21:33Speaker 1: few times on TV that African women have been traded
- 21:36Speaker 1: as professionals. So why do you feel that now African
- 21:41Speaker 1: women say, no, we can do this, we can go
- 21:43Speaker 1: out there and we can be business people. Well, I
- 21:47Speaker 1: think black women have been carrying the load of all
- 21:49Speaker 1: businesses from the time he came to this country. Every
- 21:53Speaker 1: So I think Michelle Obama talker, that's that the young
- 21:57Speaker 1: Michelle Obama. We've just been we've just been pushed down
- 22:02Speaker 1: all the way to the bottom of the totem pole,
- 22:05Speaker 1: have not gotten anything back for all the work we've done.
- 22:08Speaker 1: But I think now, obviously the time has changed, and
- 22:12Speaker 1: you know, people are starting to create things for themselves.
- 22:14Speaker 1: They're like, listen, I can you know all the streaming platforms,
- 22:17Speaker 1: all the platforms online that people are posting their stuff
- 22:20Speaker 1: and not waiting for people anymore or the powers that be.
- 22:23Speaker 1: And I think we're Our culture is the culture that pushes,
- 22:27Speaker 1: you know, pushes forth the conversations. We we pushed forward
- 22:33Speaker 1: what's cool, you know, and we've been doing that for
- 22:36Speaker 1: so long. And I think we've been doing it and
- 22:38Speaker 1: everybody else has been taking it and capitalizing all of it.
- 22:40Speaker 1: And now we're like, wait a second, we're always left behind.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Let's do stuff for ourselves. Let's collaborate, and let's let's
- 22:47Speaker 1: show who we are. We're very dynamic, well rounded people
- 22:51Speaker 1: and every aspect, you know. And so I think it's
- 22:54Speaker 1: not that we couldn't do it before. It's just the not.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Not only was the opportunity not there, but the tools
- 23:00Speaker 1: weren't all there, and people weren't leaving doors open for us,
- 23:04Speaker 1: you know, or acting like they knew our stories better
- 23:07Speaker 1: than we knew ourselves. So I think just the time,
- 23:10Speaker 1: timing has changed, and people are, probably especially people of color,
- 23:14Speaker 1: Black people are we're sick and tired of being sick
- 23:17Speaker 1: and tired of people constantly taking control of our narratives.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Then I thank you, and I think we have we're
- 23:24Speaker 1: living in the residual reality of a couple of generations
- 23:27Speaker 1: of really strong black you know, of generations of strong
- 23:31Speaker 1: Black women who really prepare this generation of women, right
- 23:35Speaker 1: like I think if you look at the pasture that
- 23:37Speaker 1: our mom's had. What's interesting is if you look at
- 23:39Speaker 1: the research and not just the number of um new
- 23:43Speaker 1: entrepreneurs who are asking American women, but if you look
- 23:46Speaker 1: at how many of those are first generation college students,
- 23:49Speaker 1: it's pretty daggerant. So you have to think about the
- 23:52Speaker 1: seeds that we're sing, you know, just you know tonys ago,
- 23:55Speaker 1: yours or shirty years ago that said, Okay, I'm gonna
- 23:58Speaker 1: make sure my daughter goes to school and the school
- 24:00Speaker 1: that he has this you know sort of pastors independent
- 24:04Speaker 1: and so you know, I said, I really think that
- 24:06Speaker 1: this is like the fruit of many of our mother's
- 24:09Speaker 1: labors to them yeay um. And then I think you
- 24:12Speaker 1: see this solidarity forming where they're almost seemed to be
- 24:17Speaker 1: this resistance for so long there could only be one
- 24:19Speaker 1: of us. And whether it's seeming or the number of
- 24:23Speaker 1: you know, um women's groups and sororities and um, you
- 24:29Speaker 1: know sort of consortions that you're seeing where you know,
- 24:31Speaker 1: we're pooling our resources, um in our efforts to really
- 24:35Speaker 1: amplify and support each other. It's a really beautiful movement
- 24:38Speaker 1: that's going on amongst women of color. I can't tell
- 24:40Speaker 1: you on the sugar how many amazing entrepreneurs we have
- 24:45Speaker 1: had in one fast or another, from interior designers and
- 24:50Speaker 1: furniture store owners to um, you know, people in the
- 24:53Speaker 1: wellness fields or trans you know, like Debbie Brown and
- 24:56Speaker 1: the wellness field who's really transforming things. But the one
- 24:59Speaker 1: through line is that everyone has been so supportive of
- 25:02Speaker 1: other women of color. So I think movement or undercurrent
- 25:06Speaker 1: there too. You know, it's really Uh. The thing about
- 25:11Speaker 1: it is that in hearing both of your articulate the
- 25:13Speaker 1: play and the mission and I'm talking to take us
- 25:15Speaker 1: something in Tyrande Off their the host of The Sugar,
- 25:19Speaker 1: one of their many and devors as a podcast which
- 25:21Speaker 1: airs every week and the listeners can laugh, learn love
- 25:25Speaker 1: and as they spill the sugar instead of the tea,
- 25:28Speaker 1: they shared infibrary celebrating sisterhood and motherhood. And you know
- 25:31Speaker 1: the thing about it is that when I when you
- 25:34Speaker 1: when you mentioned you know, Jessica album, you're missening to
- 25:36Speaker 1: some other people you know right now as a podcast,
- 25:42Speaker 1: and then you mentioned red Table. Now what you guys
- 25:45Speaker 1: are doing is not red Table. It's something totally different.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Does this does will this become visual? Will we'll be
- 25:52Speaker 1: able to see this in a streaming platform maybe or
- 25:56Speaker 1: a syndicated player maybe, Because I'm telling Sean McDonald's a fan,
- 26:02Speaker 1: Because first of all, I love talking to you guys.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Y'all really, are you know kids been muddon? Jeff? You
- 26:07Speaker 1: know Lauren Hardy, y'all really are y'all opted? And yeah,
- 26:11Speaker 1: y'all sounded like you know you know that I need
- 26:13Speaker 1: to see y'all on TV because I go is that
- 26:14Speaker 1: Tika Tuck? You know, I got put that old ear
- 26:18Speaker 1: to the to the phone, you know what he's talking about. Yeah, Yeah,
- 26:23Speaker 1: we're absolutely excited to once we get out. Obviously, once
- 26:27Speaker 1: we're all able to leave the house again, we have
- 26:29Speaker 1: a lot of plans. You got to you got to, yeah,
- 26:32Speaker 1: a bunch of series on our on our platform sugarberry
- 26:35Speaker 1: dot Com. But also, um yeah, see the visual of
- 26:39Speaker 1: the actual podcast on streaming, because it's just a wonderful Um.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Like I said, I've always been a fan of Falward
- 26:48Speaker 1: Essence Magazine, the Essence Festivals all those years and just
- 26:51Speaker 1: going down there and seeing five hundred thousand you know,
- 26:55Speaker 1: Black people and to walk around and at least eight
- 26:58Speaker 1: of them or African American women walking around, you know,
- 27:01Speaker 1: examining their culture, building their culture, and throughout this country.
- 27:05Speaker 1: You know, your uh Circle of Sisters in New York
- 27:08Speaker 1: that's a giant festival. Charlotte, that's a giant female festival.
- 27:11Speaker 1: So they're always festivals for women, geared towards women. But
- 27:16Speaker 1: I like the fact that you guys are becoming a
- 27:19Speaker 1: varce an entrepreneurial vorce and saying women are beyond let's
- 27:23Speaker 1: let's sen to beyond the kitchen, beyond being just cute,
- 27:25Speaker 1: being just being being a person. A face of attractiveness,
- 27:29Speaker 1: your business people, your people who you know, your your
- 27:32Speaker 1: your your wives, you're raising kids. But guess what you're
- 27:35Speaker 1: more than that is that is that basically the story
- 27:38Speaker 1: in a in a version of what you guys are
- 27:40Speaker 1: trying to accomplish and tell on a daily basis, not
- 27:42Speaker 1: only with your platforms Sugar, but with your brand Sugarberry.
- 27:48Speaker 1: I mean, you know, motherhood should be enjoyed not in
- 27:53Speaker 1: doors to all these stories. But I also think you know,
- 27:58Speaker 1: to your point about you know, knocking being a pretty
- 28:00Speaker 1: face and not just being what's what's so interesting is
- 28:03Speaker 1: from a business partnership perspective in Tatica's earlier point about
- 28:06Speaker 1: finding someone who you know is sort of who balances
- 28:09Speaker 1: your strength and weaknesses, but also who has the same
- 28:11Speaker 1: work ethic. Think that it's so hands on, not just
- 28:15Speaker 1: in sort of the program she's hands on in the
- 28:17Speaker 1: creative direction and the programming and the editorial in do
- 28:21Speaker 1: deal structures, and so I think that you know, it's
- 28:25Speaker 1: it's really really hope to lay up a blueprint for
- 28:29Speaker 1: you know, women and just entrepreneurs in general. Um, it's
- 28:32Speaker 1: a it's a lot of hardware, but but also um,
- 28:37Speaker 1: you know there's their space for everyone at the table,
- 28:40Speaker 1: and so so much of what we talked about, even
- 28:41Speaker 1: on the sugar is what this journey has been like
- 28:45Speaker 1: for us, like watching during the COVID crisis and you know,
- 28:49Speaker 1: our own you know, sort of hurdles with you know,
- 28:52Speaker 1: raising capital. So um, So yeah, I do think it's
- 28:55Speaker 1: a it's a point of inspiration, Chica. What would you say? Yeah,
- 28:59Speaker 1: I think it's a point of inspiration. And I think
- 29:01Speaker 1: it's just I mean, I don't think I think having
- 29:04Speaker 1: a pretty face is just not enough, and I don't
- 29:07Speaker 1: think anybody just I don't think anybody wants to just
- 29:10Speaker 1: be a pretty face. I think they just have to
- 29:12Speaker 1: find their passion and what they're really good at and
- 29:15Speaker 1: then go from there, you know, and try to seek
- 29:18Speaker 1: the opportunities where they are, and start from where you are.
- 29:21Speaker 1: So yeah, we know, you know, I'm talking to very
- 29:25Speaker 1: two very smart, smart ladies. And I would say, you know,
- 29:28Speaker 1: I saw Tica. I saw in one of these movies.
- 29:30Speaker 1: I think you start with Jamie Lee Curtis and um,
- 29:34Speaker 1: and you are and yeah right right right and you
- 29:37Speaker 1: um and you were rattling off these terrorist names and
- 29:42Speaker 1: I went, I went ain't no way I could say
- 29:47Speaker 1: two of those names correctly. You just articulate them so smooth,
- 29:50Speaker 1: and so it's just it's just, you know, there's nothings
- 29:53Speaker 1: like that impressed me. I'm just sorry. Yeah, I'm just
- 29:55Speaker 1: a simple guy. Tica T A T. I'm just simple
- 29:57Speaker 1: like that. That. But the more because I was like,
- 30:02Speaker 1: I don't know how I'm gonna do that. You did it.
- 30:04Speaker 1: You did it. I believe you. I believe you even
- 30:06Speaker 1: if you said it ain't wrong, you said it clear well.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Talking to the Stars of the Sugar is an incredible podcast.
- 30:16Speaker 1: I would do me this favorite send me some banners
- 30:18Speaker 1: so I can promote I got, you know, I got
- 30:20Speaker 1: my little social media following of almost a million on uh,
- 30:25Speaker 1: I got my fan club all with ainty thousand. I
- 30:27Speaker 1: got several platforms. I'm a fan and not just a
- 30:30Speaker 1: fan of you too. I'm a fan of what you
