- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfl Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now let's dive in with your hosts.
- 0:18Welcome everyone to connecting the dots the show
- 0:21where we make sense of all the crazy tech stuff
- 0:22happening and figure out how it affects you Yeah,
- 0:25exactly. It's like all these headlines and announcements.
- 0:27They can be kind of overwhelming, right? And
- 0:29that's where we come in today's March 24th 2025
- 0:33by the way Seriously, so what are we diving into
- 0:37today? Well, there's a cool update coming to
- 0:39some popular headphones. A lot of big companies
- 0:41are gobbling up startups, AIs making waves in
- 0:45the software world. Some folks might have lost
- 0:47a bit of their Google Maps history, and there's
- 0:49a new top dog in European business. Sounds like
- 0:51a packed show. Let's get started. OK, so first
- 0:54up, there's some big news for anyone who owns
- 0:57Apple's AirPods Max. Those fancy over -the -ear
- 1:00headphones. Yep, those. So Apple announced a
- 1:03software update coming next month in April. and
- 1:06it's all about sound quality, like way better
- 1:09sound quality. Yeah, we're talking. What exactly
- 1:11are they changing? Well, the big thing is they're
- 1:13adding something called lossless audio, specifically
- 1:1624 -bit, 48 kilohertz. I know, I know, those
- 1:19numbers probably mean nothing to most people.
- 1:21Yeah, it sounds pretty technical. But basically,
- 1:23lossless means that when the music is compressed
- 1:25to send wirelessly to your headphones, none of
- 1:29the original sound information is lost. It's
- 1:32like you're hearing all the nuances and details
- 1:34the artist intended. Ah, OK. So it's all about
- 1:37preserving that original sound quality, making
- 1:39it super crisp and clear. Exactly. It's a noticeable
- 1:43difference, especially if you listen to music
- 1:45a lot. You might rediscover your favorite songs
- 1:47with this update. That's pretty neat. And I heard
- 1:49there are other features too, right? Something
- 1:51about spatial audio. Oh, yeah. The update also
- 1:53includes personalized spatial audio. We've had
- 1:55regular spatial audio before, which creates that
- 1:583D sound effect. Yeah, where it feels like the
- 2:00music is all around you. Right. But this personalized
- 2:03version goes a step further. It actually uses
- 2:05information about your head and ears, like the
- 2:09shape, to tailor that 3D sound specifically to
- 2:12you. So it should be even more immersive and
- 2:14realistic. Wow. So it's like custom -made sound
- 2:17for your ears. Exactly. It's pretty wild. And
- 2:20then... There's one more improvement I gotta
- 2:22mention, which is ultra low latency. Yeah, it's
- 2:25basically the delay between, say, you pressing
- 2:27a button and hearing the sound effect. This update
- 2:30aims to make that delay super small, almost unnoticeable,
- 2:34especially when you're watching videos or playing
- 2:35games. So everything feels more synced and responsive.
- 2:39I can see how that'd be important for gaming.
- 2:41Totally. You don't want any lag ruining your
- 2:43game. So all in all, this update's looking pretty
- 2:46sweet for anyone with AirPods Max. Makes them
- 2:48even more worth the price tag. Definitely an
- 2:50upgrade worth having. It improves the things
- 2:52that matter, the audio quality, the immersiveness
- 2:55and that responsiveness, all stuff that people
- 2:57use these headphones for every day. All right.
- 2:59So let's move on to something a little different.
- 3:01Startup acquisitions. CB Insights, they're a
- 3:05research firm. They're saying there's been a
- 3:07huge jump in big companies buying up smaller
- 3:09ones, like billion dollar deals. Interesting.
- 3:12How big of a jump are we talking? Well, in the
- 3:14first three months of this year, 2025, there
- 3:17have already been 11 of these deals. worth a
- 3:20total of, get this, $54 .5 billion. That's a
- 3:26lot of money. How does that compare to last year?
- 3:28Like night and day. In the same period last year,
- 3:302024, there were only two deals worth a total
- 3:33of $3 .2 billion. So yeah, pretty massive increase.
- 3:38Wow. Any notable examples come to mind? Oh, absolutely.
- 3:42The biggest one by far is Google buying a company
- 3:45called Wiz. For like a mind -boggling 32 billion
- 3:50dollars. That's one expensive company So what
- 3:52does this mean for you know, the average person
- 3:55like why should they care about these big companies
- 3:57buying smaller ones? Yeah, it's not immediately
- 3:59obvious, right? But here's the thing these acquisitions
- 4:02They often lead to new features and better products
- 4:04down the line when a company like Google scoops
- 4:06up a startup like whiz They're basically getting
- 4:09their hands on some cutting -edge technology
- 4:11and a bunch of really talented people. I see
- 4:14so it's like an injection of innovation Exactly.
- 4:16Think about it like this. You know how Instagram
- 4:18is part of Facebook now. That acquisition back
- 4:21in the day, well, that had a huge impact on the
- 4:23whole social media landscape. So these deals,
- 4:25they can really shape the tech world in ways
- 4:27that we might not even realize right away. Right,
- 4:30right. So it's not just about the money. It's
- 4:31about the potential for new ideas and technologies
- 4:35to filter down into the stuff we use every day.
- 4:37Absolutely. And this surge in acquisitions, it
- 4:41also tells us what the big companies are focusing
- 4:43on. The fact that they're pouring so much money
- 4:45into areas like cybersecurity, like with that
- 4:47whiz deal, well, that suggests that security
- 4:51is becoming a top priority for them. Which ultimately
- 4:53is good news for everyone. Right. It means our
- 4:56online experiences are likely to become more
- 4:58secure in the future. So it's like these acquisitions.
- 5:01They're kind of like a window into the future
- 5:02of tech. Exactly. They're hints about what's
- 5:04coming down the pipeline. Speaking of the future
- 5:07of tech, let's talk about AI, artificial intelligence.
- 5:10Ah, yes. The big buzzword. It's more than just
- 5:14a buzzword these days. Wired, the magazine, they
- 5:17did a survey of 730 software developers, asking
- 5:20them about their use of AI. And the results were
- 5:22pretty interesting. Oh, how so? Well, a whopping
- 5:2675 % of those developers said they've at least
- 5:29tried using AI in their work. That's a pretty
- 5:31huge adoption rate. It really shows how fast
- 5:33AI is spreading. Right. It's becoming a standard
- 5:36tool for many developers. But here's the surprising
- 5:38part. The developers were pretty split on how
- 5:41they felt about AI. Like 35 .6 % were optimistic
- 5:45about its impact. But a slightly larger percentage,
- 5:4938 .4%, were actually pessimistic. That's interesting.
- 5:53I wonder what's driving that pessimism. Yeah,
- 5:55it's a good question. I mean, AI is supposed
- 5:57to make things easier, right? Well, yeah, in
- 5:59theory. But I imagine some developers might be
- 6:02worried about job security, if AI can automate
- 6:05a lot of their work. Yeah, that's definitely
- 6:07a valid concern. There are also concerns about
- 6:09the quality of AI -generated code, whether it's
- 6:12as good as human -written code. And there are
- 6:14ethical issues, too, about how AI is used in
- 6:18the development process. Makes sense. It's a
- 6:20complex topic for sure. It is. The survey also
- 6:23found that freelance developers are using AI
- 6:25more than those working for companies and that
- 6:27over half of employers are now paying for AI
- 6:30tools for their teams. So even though there's
- 6:32some hesitation, it seems like AIs are becoming
- 6:35increasingly integrated into the software world.
- 6:38Absolutely. And what this means for you is that
- 6:40the apps and software you use, they're likely
- 6:43being influenced and maybe even created with
- 6:46the help of AI. So whether we like it or not,
- 6:49AI is playing a bigger role in our digital lives.
- 6:52Right. OK, moving on to something that might
- 6:54hit a little closer to home for some folks, there's
- 6:57been an issue with Google Maps timeline. Apparently,
- 7:00some users have had their timeline data deleted
- 7:02because of a technical glitch. Uh -oh. Not good.
- 7:06No, not good at all. Google's confirmed the issue,
- 7:09and they're advising affected users to try restoring
- 7:12their data from a backup if they have one. I
- 7:14can imagine some people are pretty upset about
- 7:16this. That timeline data, it can be really valuable.
- 7:20Definitely. It's like a digital record of where
- 7:22you've been, you know, all your trips, your daily
- 7:24commutes, everything. Some people use it to track
- 7:26their travels, others just like having that personal
- 7:29history. Losing it can be a real bummer. No kidding.
- 7:32It's like losing a part of your digital memory.
- 7:33Yeah, kinda. And it's a good reminder that even
- 7:36though we store so much stuff online these days,
- 7:39things can go wrong. Backups are super important.
- 7:42Couldn't agree more. We should all have backups
- 7:44of our important data, whether it's photos, documents,
- 7:48or yeah, even our location history. Right. Hopefully
- 7:51Google can figure out a way to recover the lost
- 7:53data. But in the meantime, it's a wake -up call
- 7:56for all of us to be more proactive about protecting
- 7:58our digital stuff. Agreed. It really highlights
- 8:00how important it is to be mindful of where our
- 8:03data is stored and to make sure we have some
- 8:05control over it. All right. Last but not least,
- 8:08let's talk about some financial news that actually
- 8:09has real world implications. SAP, it's a German
- 8:14software company. Their stock has been doing
- 8:15really well. It recently went up by 1 .6%, which
- 8:19pushed their market value to a whopping 314 billion
- 8:22euros. 314 billion? That's huge. Yeah, it's a
- 8:26lot of money. And it means that SAP is now the
- 8:28most valuable public company in Europe, even
- 8:30bigger than Nova Nordisk, the previous leader.
- 8:32Yeah. And their stock, it's up 42 % this year
- 8:34alone. Pretty impressive, right? Definitely.
- 8:37But why should we care? Like, what does this
- 8:39have to do with our everyday lives? Well, SAP.
- 8:42They're a major player in the world of enterprise
- 8:44software. They make the software that a lot of
- 8:47businesses use to manage their operations, everything
- 8:49from supply chains to customer service to accounting.
- 8:53So in a way, SAP is kind of behind the scenes
- 8:57in a lot of the companies we interact with every
- 8:58day. I see. So if SAP is thriving, that means
- 9:02businesses are investing in tech to improve their
- 9:04processes. Right. And that, in the long run,
- 9:08can lead to better products and services for
- 9:10consumers. Like, imagine a company uses SAP software
- 9:13to manage its inventory better. Yeah. What would
- 9:15that do? Well, that could mean less stock shortages,
- 9:18faster shipping times, maybe even lower prices
- 9:20for us. So SAP success, it's actually a good
- 9:24sign for the tech industry as a whole. So it's
- 9:26not just about some company's stock price. It's
- 9:29a sign of a healthy and growing tech ecosystem,
- 9:32which ultimately benefits everyone. Absolutely.
- 9:34It's all connected, you know? It always is. So
- 9:36there you have it. Those are the big tech stories
- 9:39we wanted to break down for you today. Just to
- 9:41recap, we talked about the AirPods Max getting
- 9:44a sweet audio upgrade, a bunch of big companies
- 9:47snatching up startups left and right, AI becoming
- 9:50more and more common in the software world, that
- 9:53Google Maps timeline glitch that's got some people
- 9:56worried about their data, and SAP taking the
- 9:59ground as Europe's most valuable company. And
- 10:02how all of that stuff actually matters to us
- 10:04regular folks. Right, because tech news isn't
- 10:07just for techies. It affects all of us. And that's
- 10:10what we're here for, to connect the dots and
