- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome to Connecting the Dots. It is
- 0:17Tuesday, May 13th, 2025. And we're your hosts
- 0:21from Snarful Solutions Group, coming to you from
- 0:23Sacramento, California. Yep. Hello, everyone.
- 0:25It's lovely here today, really bright and sunny,
- 0:27about 74 degrees Fahrenheit. Nice day here. Nationally,
- 0:31though, it's a bit more varied. Looks like heavy
- 0:33rain over in the mid -Atlantic. Oh, yeah. And
- 0:36unfortunately, still seeing critical fire weather
- 0:37warnings across the northern plains, upper Midwest,
- 0:40down into Arizona, New Mexico, and West Texas,
- 0:43too. So stay safe out there, folks. Definitely
- 0:46and just a quick look back at the markets from
- 0:49yesterday's close Tuesday the 13th the Dow Jones
- 0:52ended the day at four two two forty eight point
- 0:54eight six right so today We're gonna do a deep
- 0:57dive into well three of the biggest tech stories
- 1:00happening right now Yeah, and kind of explore
- 1:02how they might actually you know impact your
- 1:04daily life exactly first up Samsung's just launched
- 1:07the new Galaxy s25 edge Ah, yes the edge and
- 1:11the big buzz seems to be all about the design,
- 1:13right? Super thin incredibly thin we're typing
- 1:16just five point eight millimeters thick Wow,
- 1:19and it weighs only 163 grams. It's Quite a contrast
- 1:24to some of the well heftier flagships out there
- 1:26definitely feels like they're prioritizing that
- 1:28slim profile But what about the actual tech inside
- 1:31did they have to compromise? Well, it seems like
- 1:33they've still packed quite a bit and you get
- 1:35a nice six point seven inch Dynamic AMOLED screen.
- 1:38Okay. It's got that adaptive refresh rate 1 to
- 1:41120 Hertz and peak brightness is 2600 nits Pretty
- 1:47bright. Yeah, that sounds good for outdoors and
- 1:49the build is premium to titanium frame IP68 water
- 1:52and dust resistant standard stuff there, right
- 1:55and it's got the latest Gorilla Glass Ceramic
- 1:582 on the screen and Vicus 2 on the back comes
- 2:01a jet black icy blue and titanium silver nice
- 2:03color choices. What's powering it? Under the
- 2:05hood, it's the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processor.
- 2:08Elite, okay, top tier. Yeah. Paired with 12 gigs
- 2:11of RAM, and you can choose between 256 or 512
- 2:14gigs of storage. Pretty generous specs. And does
- 2:16it have all the Samsung software features? Yep.
- 2:18The full Galaxy AI suite is included, and it
- 2:21runs one UI 7, which is based on Android 15.
- 2:24And the updates. Samsung's been pretty good lately.
- 2:26They're making a big promise here. Seven years
- 2:28of software updates. Seven years, wow. Okay,
- 2:32that's... That's really significant. It really
- 2:34is. That kind of longevity is becoming a key
- 2:36factor for people. Battery is 3 ,900 millina
- 2:40with 25W wired charging. Hmm, 3 ,900. A bit smaller
- 2:45than some, maybe, to fit that thin design. That's
- 2:48likely the trade -off, yeah. And the camera setup
- 2:50is also, well, interesting because of that thinness.
- 2:53It's a vertical module. Okay. You get a huge...
- 2:55200 megapixel main camera. 200 megapixels, wow.
- 2:59Although reports say the sensor itself is about
- 3:0018 % smaller than the one in the S25 Ultra. Oh,
- 3:04okay. Another compromise for the thinness, perhaps?
- 3:06Probably. It also has a 12 megapixel wide angle
- 3:09and a 12 megapixel selfie camera. But here's
- 3:12the thing, no dedicated telephoto lens. Really?
- 3:15No optical zoom lens? How do they handle zoom
- 3:17then? They're saying the main 200MP sensor can
- 3:21provide a 2x optical quality zoom. So basically
- 3:23a high resolution crop. Hmm. Okay. We'll have
- 3:26to see how that actually performs in real life.
- 3:28It's clear they really, really wanted that thin
- 3:30design above all else. It seems like it. Pre
- 3:33-orders actually start today, May 13th. Oh, right
- 3:35now. Yep. And the phone will be available on
- 3:38May 30th. Pricing is set at $199 US or when they're
- 3:42in 99 UK for the 256 GB model. Okay. And $1199
- 3:47or $1199 for the 512 GB one. And interestingly,
- 3:52in the UK, they're offering a Galaxy Club financing
- 3:56option. Financing, huh? Okay. You know, it's
- 3:58funny you mentioned the focus on thinness because
- 4:00we saw this piece on Tom's Guide that kind of
- 4:02pushes back on that. Oh, yeah. What's their take?
- 4:04They were actually arguing for smaller phones,
- 4:06not just thinner ones, like bringing back something
- 4:08compact and easy to hold. Smaller, like a...
- 4:11They specifically mentioned the Samsung Galaxy
- 4:13Alpha. Remember that one from like 10 years ago?
- 4:16Vaguely, yeah. You had that metal trim, right?
- 4:18Kind of a departure for Samsung back then. Exactly.
- 4:20It had a 4 .7 -inch screen, which they point
- 4:23out, without a home button and with smaller bezels,
- 4:25could easily be a 5 -inch screen today. Right.
- 4:27Screen real estate has changed. And it was praised
- 4:30for being easy to hold, only 0 .26 inches thick
- 4:33and super light, just over 4 ounces. OK, so how
- 4:36does that compare to this new S25 Edge? Well,
- 4:39the S25 Edge is thinner. at 0 .23 inches, but,
- 4:43and this is the key point Tom's guide made, it's
- 4:45significantly heavier at 5 .75 ounces. Ah, heavier.
- 4:49So maybe thinness isn't the only factor for,
- 4:51like, pocketability or handling. Exactly. Their
- 4:54argument is that Alpha's overall size made it
- 4:56much better for one -handed use, which is something
- 4:58a lot of people miss with today's bigger phones.
- 5:01Yeah, I can see that. trying to reach the top
- 5:02corner of these massive screens. Right, and Tom's
- 5:05guide kind of imagines a modern alpha, give it
- 5:07tough glass, like Victus 2, maybe that same dual
- 5:10camera setup as the S25 Edge, like the 200MP
- 5:13main, and a 12MP ultra -wide. And what about
- 5:16the battery? The original Alpha's was tiny, wasn't
- 5:19it? It was, yeah, only 1 ,860 mAh, but they figure
- 5:24with modern chip efficiency, you could maybe
- 5:26fit, I don't know, around a 3 ,000 mAh battery
- 5:28in a similar sized phone today, plus fast charging,
- 5:31obviously. Hmm, 3 ,000 mAh. Might still be a
- 5:34bit tight for some users, but definitely better.
- 5:37It really makes you think, though. It does. So
- 5:39for you listening, what's more appealing? Is
- 5:41it that super sleek, ultra thin profile of the
- 5:45S25 edge? Or is it the idea of a more compact,
- 5:49maybe slightly thicker, but easier to handle
- 5:51phone? Yeah, it's a fundamental choice in phone
- 5:53design right now. Interesting stuff. OK, let's
- 5:57shift gears a bit. There's some significant news
- 5:59on the international trade front. Oh, yeah. What's
- 6:01happening? It seems the US and China have reached
- 6:03an agreement, a temporary one. Mind you, to lower
- 6:06some tariffs. Really? Lowering tariffs? That
- 6:09feels like a shift in direction. It does. The
- 6:11reports say it's for a 90 -day period. Kind of
- 6:13a sign of maybe easing tensions a little. Specifically,
- 6:17the plan is for the U .S. to cut tariff on certain
- 6:19Chinese goods pretty dramatically. That's dramatic.
- 6:22From 145 % down to 30%. Whoa! Okay, 145 down
- 6:26to 30. That's a huge drop. On which goods, though?
- 6:29The details on specific goods aren't fully clear
- 6:32yet, but it's a significant move. However, there's
- 6:35a catch. Oh, always a catch. This deal apparently
- 6:37doesn't apply to those low -value e -commerce
- 6:39packages, the de minimis shipments from China
- 6:41to the US. Ah, so things you buy directly from,
- 6:45like AliExpress or Tmoo. Exactly. Those tariffs
- 6:47are reportedly staying put at 120%. Okay, so
- 6:50that's important for online shoppers, 120%. Wow.
- 6:53Yeah. And Treasury Secretary Scott Besson commented
- 6:56on this. He said basically both countries want
- 6:59to avoid a full economic split, you know, that
- 7:02decoupling people talk about. Right. But he also
- 7:05stressed that the U .S. will still keep tariffs
- 7:07on specific things tied to national security.
- 7:11Think semiconductors, certain medicines, steel.
- 7:15So it's not a blanket reduction, more targeted
- 7:17easing perhaps. For 90 days anyway seems that
- 7:20way and the market seemed to like the news at
- 7:22least initially the S &P 500 was up about two
- 7:24point six percent yesterday Okay, and the Nasdaq
- 7:27Q composite climbed around three point five percent
- 7:29decent bumps still below the record highs though
- 7:31Yeah, still got some ground to make up to reach
- 7:33those peaks, but you know positive movement We
- 7:36saw a quote from Ziwei Zhang an economist over
- 7:39at pinpoint asset management in Hong Kong. What
- 7:41did he say? He viewed this 90 -day deal as quote
- 7:44better than expected He thinks it's good for
- 7:47both the US and Chinese economies, and importantly,
- 7:50for global supply chains. Might calm some nerves
- 7:53there. That makes sense. I mean, wasn't it just
- 7:55last month in April that the US actually raised
- 7:57tariffs on China while pausing hikes elsewhere?
- 8:00That's right. And the US also just finalized
- 8:03that trade deal with the UK recently. So yeah,
- 8:06the whole global trade picture is constantly
- 8:08shifting. So what is this temporary truce, if
- 8:11you can call it that, mean for, you know, regular
- 8:14people and businesses? Could we actually see
- 8:16lower prices on some things? That's the big question,
- 8:19isn't it? A 90 -day window is pretty short in
- 8:21the grand scheme of supply chains and pricing.
- 8:24It might take time for any reductions to filter
- 8:26down if they do it all. True. But it certainly
- 8:29raises questions about the longer -term direction
- 8:31of this trade relationship. Is this a temporary
- 8:34blip or the start of a more stable phase? We'll
- 8:37have to wait and see. Definitely one to watch.
- 8:40Okay, for our third story, let's talk about something
- 8:42a bit lighter music streaming. Spotify's made
- 8:44some changes. That's right. They've updated their
- 8:47AI DJ feature. This is for the premium subscribers.
- 8:50The AI DJ. I remember when that launched, the
- 8:52AI voice that picks music for you. Exactly. The
- 8:56big update now is that you can use English voice
- 8:59commands to customize what it plays. Oh, interesting.
- 9:02So you can talk to it, like ask for specific
- 9:04artists or genres? Yeah. Or even ask for a certain
- 9:07mood, apparently, like play some upbeat pop or
- 9:11find chill electronic music. Huh. That makes
- 9:14it much more interactive than just letting the
- 9:17algorithm guess. Definitely more user control.
- 9:19And they've rolled out a few other things for
- 9:21premium users, too. The cue feature has been
- 9:23revamped. The cue? What's new there? Easier access
- 9:26to controls like shuffle, smart shuffle, repeat,
- 9:28the sleep timer. And it now suggests songs to
- 9:32play after your cue runs out. if you want. OK,
- 9:34some quality of life improvements. Yeah, and
- 9:36there's a more powerful hide button now. If you
- 9:38hide a song, it gets removed across all your
- 9:40devices and playlists, not just in that one spot.
- 9:43Oh, that's actually useful. Sometimes songs just
- 9:45follow you around. Tell me about it. And they're
- 9:48testing something called a 30 -day snooze feature,
- 9:51which would just temporarily hide a song from
- 9:53your recommendations for a month. Hmm. Interesting.
- 9:56Like you're tired of it now but might want it
- 9:58back later. Exactly. But it's not just premium
- 10:01users getting updates. Oh. What about for everyone
- 10:04else? All users should see new tools at the top
- 10:07of their playlists, buttons for add, sort, and
- 10:10edit, making it easier to manage them. That sounds
- 10:13handy. Playlist management can be a bit fiddly
- 10:15sometimes. Totally. And in some countries, including
- 10:18the U .S., you can now turn your... liked songs
- 10:21collection directly into its own playlist. Oh,
- 10:23finally. People have wanted that for ages. Right.
- 10:26Plus, on mobile, there's a new create button,
- 10:29like a plus sign, for quickly starting playlists,
- 10:32doing collaborative blends, or for premium users,
- 10:35jumping into a jam session or using the AI playlist
- 10:38generator. So lots of little tweaks focused on
- 10:40usability and control. But going back to that
- 10:43AI DJ voice command update, it's interesting
- 10:46how they keep pushing that feature. Yeah, they
- 10:48initially pitched it as this personalized AI
- 10:51guide that really knows your taste, almost like
- 10:54a personal radio host. Which sounds cool in theory,
- 10:57but you know, we also saw that article on T3
- 10:59where the writer really did not like the AI DJ.
- 11:03Oh, right. What was their main issue? They just
- 11:05found the voice and the whole delivery kind of
- 11:07grating, I think, compared it unfavorably to
- 11:11actual human radio DJs. Ah, the uncanny valley
- 11:15of AI voices, perhaps. Maybe. And they even mentioned
- 11:18being a bit worried about how it might influence
- 11:21their kids' music tastes or something. It was
- 11:23a pretty strong reaction against it. It just
- 11:25shows, doesn't it? People have very different
- 11:27reactions to AI stepping into these creative
- 11:30or curated roles. Some love the personalization.
- 11:32And others really miss the human element or just
- 11:34find the AI version kind of, well, annoying.
- 11:37Exactly. So it poses a good question for you
- 11:39listening. Yeah. Have you actually tried the
- 11:41Spotify AI DJ? What do you think? Yeah. Are you
- 11:43using these AI music recommendation tools? And
- 11:46how do you feel about AI voices in general for
- 11:48this kind of thing? Is it better or worse than
- 11:50traditional radio or just different? It's definitely
- 11:53part of that bigger conversation about AI's place.
- 11:55in our entertainment and daily lives. For sure.
- 11:58Well, that wraps up our main stories for this
- 12:01deep dive. Yeah. So just to quickly recap, we
- 12:03talked about the new Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge,
- 12:06focusing on that super thin design and the counter
- 12:09argument for smaller, more hand -friendly phones.
- 12:12Right. Then we looked at that surprising temporary
- 12:15deal between the US and China to lower some tariffs
- 12:17and what that might signal for trade and potentially
- 12:20for prices Mm -hmm. Mm -hmm. And finally the
- 12:23updates to Spotify Especially giving the AI DJ
- 12:26voice commands and the mixed feelings people
- 12:29seem to have about AI music curation And you
- 12:31can see how all these things the phones we carry
- 12:33global economics how we listen to music They
- 12:35all connect and potentially change how we experience
- 12:38technology day to day. Absolutely Which leads
- 12:41us to maybe a final thought for you to chew on.
- 12:43As phones keep getting thinner, like the S25
- 12:46Edge, are we okay with the potential trade -offs?
- 12:49Like maybe slightly smaller batteries or different
- 12:51camera systems? And on the trade front, how might
- 12:53these ongoing shifts and temporary agreements
- 12:56between major players like the US and China ultimately
- 13:00impact the cost and availability of the tech
- 13:03products you use every single day? Lots to think
- 13:05about. Indeed. Well, thanks for joining us. We
